interesting ideas out there

stories in the Bible

to understand what the
theology and the teachings are.

The story we're
going to consider,

you find in the Book of Daniel.

And some of you remember

when we studied
Daniel Chapter 2,

and Daniel was interpreting
00:06:08.10\00:06:09.96
the dream for
King Nebuchadnezzar
00:06:10.00\00:06:11.90
of this tall image
00:06:11.93\00:06:13.27
that outlined the
major empires of the world
00:06:13.30\00:06:16.14
from the time of Daniel
00:06:16.17\00:06:17.61
until the Lord returns
and sets up His kingdom.
00:06:17.64\00:06:20.84
And he said
that the head of gold
00:06:20.88\00:06:22.64
represented King Nebuchadnezzar,
00:06:22.68\00:06:24.91
but then the king
didn't like so much
00:06:24.95\00:06:26.51
when Daniel continued
with the interpretation
00:06:26.55\00:06:29.78
and he spoke about
the arms of silver.
00:06:29.82\00:06:31.52
And he said, "After thee
shall arise another kingdom."
00:06:31.55\00:06:35.96
And Nebuchadnezzar
liked being the head of gold.
00:06:35.99\00:06:38.09
He did not like the idea
00:06:38.13\00:06:39.46
that his kingdom would not last.
00:06:39.49\00:06:41.46
So he began to think,
00:06:41.50\00:06:43.03
if Babylon is
symbolized by the head of gold,
00:06:43.06\00:06:46.53
what if I make an image,
00:06:46.57\00:06:47.90
something like the
one I saw in my dream,
00:06:47.94\00:06:49.47
but make it all gold.
00:06:49.50\00:06:51.01
Maybe I can overthrow
or confound the vision
00:06:51.04\00:06:53.61
so that Babylon
will last forever.
00:06:53.64\00:06:56.64
And I don't know,
maybe some of his wise men
00:06:56.68\00:06:58.58
or astrologers or
sorcerers gave him this idea,
00:06:58.61\00:07:02.62
but that's what he did.
00:07:02.65\00:07:04.15
He made a massive
statue on the Plains of Dura
00:07:04.19\00:07:07.79
there in Babylon.
00:07:07.82\00:07:09.16
And he hoped to bring
his whole empire together
00:07:09.19\00:07:12.39
through common worship,
00:07:12.43\00:07:14.66
because he had all
these different cultures
00:07:14.70\00:07:16.23
and religions and nations.
00:07:16.26\00:07:18.13
So he set up this
tall image of gold
00:07:18.17\00:07:21.80
and the Bible tells
us that this image is
00:07:21.84\00:07:24.51
60 cubits by 6 cubits.
00:07:24.54\00:07:28.54
And a number of
Hebrew scholars say that
00:07:28.58\00:07:30.41
if in Hebrew dimensions,
00:07:30.45\00:07:31.78
if they give you the width
00:07:31.81\00:07:33.25
and they don't
give you the depth,
00:07:33.28\00:07:34.78
the depth will be
the same as the width.
00:07:34.82\00:07:37.29
Which means it was 60 by 6 by 6,
00:07:37.32\00:07:40.82
which I think is
very interesting.
00:07:40.86\00:07:42.92
Then he gave a command.
00:07:42.96\00:07:44.29
He said, when you hear
the sound of the music,

they were going to
unveil this majestic image.

And there would be
glinting in the rising sun.

Everybody was to
fall down and worship it.

But that created a
problem for three of the Hebrews

that were in the king's cabinet,

because there is a commandment
that specifically says,

do not bow down
to graven images.

It's called idolatry.

Well, the king knew
that some might resist.

He said,

"Whoever does not fall
down and worship the same hour

he will be cast into the midst
of a burning fiery furnace."

And the furnace they had
used to smelt the golden image

was not far away and
probably still smoldering.

So they played the music

and those three brave Hebrews

Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah

sometimes known as

The same
individuals would not bow down.

When the king
heard some advisors said,

there's some people

that don't observe your law.

And they're not bowing down

to the image that you've set up.

"Bring them here.
There are done for."

When he saw it was these

three bright
good-looking Hebrew young men

that he had said in Chapter 1

were 10 times
wiser than his wise men.

He didn't want to execute them.

He thought I'll
give him another chance.

So maybe you
didn't hear the command.

See the devil wants nothing

play the music again

and we're not bowing down."

"Be it known unto thee, O King,"

one of the young men answered

it doesn't say which one,

"that we will not serve thy gods

or worship the golden
image that you have set up.'

Well, when the king heard this,
he just about blew a gasket.

He commanded the soldiers.

They heat up the furnace,
but not just heat it up,

to heat it up seven times hotter

than it had ever
been heated before.

Then he got the
strongest soldiers

in his empire

and he had them tie up.

Didn't even strip
off their clothes,

just had them wrapped them up

in a cocoon of rope and said,

"Toss them into the
middle of this raging inferno."

Now the Bible tells us

that the furnace
really was heated

seven times hotter than
it should have been heated

because as the soldiers
ran forward to throw them in,

you got two soldiers
they grab hold of the arms
00:10:19.21\00:10:21.78
and legs of
Shadrach and they run up.
00:10:21.82\00:10:23.95
They even meant
the fire was so hot
00:10:23.99\00:10:25.39
it killed the
soldiers that threw them in.
00:10:25.42\00:10:28.29
Can you imagine being
the second group of soldiers?
00:10:28.32\00:10:31.06
Nebuchadnezzar says next one.
00:10:31.09\00:10:34.46
This is a tough job,
but they obeyed the king.
00:10:34.50\00:10:38.17
They ran up to throw him in
00:10:38.20\00:10:40.37
and they landed in
the middle of the furnace.
00:10:40.40\00:10:42.10
But the soldiers
died in the process.
00:10:42.14\00:10:44.67
I would have
been very discouraged
00:10:44.71\00:10:46.04
if I was the
third pair of soldiers
00:10:46.07\00:10:47.41
that had to throw
in Mishael or Azariah,
00:10:47.44\00:10:50.61
but they obeyed the king.
00:10:50.65\00:10:52.31
They went and they threw Azariah
00:10:52.35\00:10:56.25
into the middle and they died.
00:10:56.28\00:11:00.06
Now, it's interesting,
the Egyptians had followed
00:11:00.09\00:11:02.46
the children of
Israel across the Red Sea.
00:11:02.49\00:11:04.89
God performed a
miracle to deliver them,
00:11:04.93\00:11:07.46
but that same
miracle destroyed the enemy.
00:11:07.50\00:11:10.70
The Bible says that the
lions that did not eat Daniel
00:11:10.73\00:11:14.54
did eat the accusers of Daniel.
00:11:14.57\00:11:17.54
It's interesting
how God sometimes

even things out
00:11:19.21\00:11:20.54
during these stories
of miracles and judgment.

But then the king looked,
00:11:24.05\00:11:26.05
says the men were cast
00:11:26.08\00:11:27.42
into the midst of the
burning fiery furnace.

They didn't fall near the edge.

And if you wonder
if it was really hot,

it's not like these fires
00:11:33.79\00:11:35.19
that some magicians
walk over to do a trick.

This fire was so hot,
it killed the soldiers

that threw them in.

But then the king
looked and he said,

"Did we not cast three men bound
00:11:44.17\00:11:47.07
into the midst of the fire?"

His advisor said,
"That's true, O king."
00:11:49.10\00:11:51.77
He said, "What's going on?
00:11:51.81\00:11:53.14
I see four men loose walking
00:11:53.17\00:11:55.78
in the midst of the fire
00:11:55.81\00:11:57.81
and the form of the
fourth is like the Son of God."

Now, friends, you may
go through fiery trials
00:12:00.98\00:12:03.55
for not worshiping the beast
and the image in the last days.

But God promises
in those fiery trials,

Jesus will be with us.

I think that Hananiah, Mishael,
and Azariah read the promise

in Isaiah, when God said,

"When you go through the
fire, I will be with you."

And Jesus really did
go into the fire with them
00:12:20.07\00:12:22.70
and He protected them.

And the only thing burned
was the ropes that bound them.

And King Nebuchadnezzar said,

"Come forth Hananiah,
Mishael, and Azariah."

He said, "There's
no God like this."
00:12:33.01\00:12:35.52
And the king issued a decree

that no one should
speak against Jehovah.

See the Lord accomplished

through Shadrach,
Meshach and Abednego

on the Plains of Dura that day,

what He had been wanting to
do through the Hebrew nation

for about 1800 years.

He got them to finally stand up

and be a witness
to the other nations

of the power of Jehovah.

And He's going to want a people
that will do the same thing

in the last days that we
will stand for the law of God

might lose their job

They could have
said, well, let's just tie

our shoes right
now, adjust our sandals

and we won't
really pray to the image,

but let's not make a spectacle.

They stood tall when
everyone else bowed down,

they would not even look
like they were compromising.

calling them churches

And they were outraged by that.

He had battles with people,

you know, some of
the great Puritan leaders

like Cotton Mather,

and they told everybody,

you had to be in
church every Sunday.

Now America is one
of the first countries

to have religious persecution

and, you know,
we had witch trials

and there were people
that were being persecuted.

If they weren't in church,
if you committed adultery,

you had a scarlet letter.

That's why that
book was written.

And so, Roger Williams said, no.
