The Four
Horsemen of the Apocalypse

Well, The Four
Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

This has had a
lot of discussion -

the seals have - over the years.
00:12:45.00\00:12:46.72
But I think the scripture
lays it out quite clearly
00:12:46.92\00:12:50.20
and we're going to start out by
reading the text here that says:

Now Christ - or the Lamb -
00:13:03.41\00:13:06.86
has... is opening the seals.
00:13:07.16\00:13:10.23
This is what He's doing.
00:13:10.53\00:13:11.67
Uh, these seals -
how should I explain? -
00:13:11.97\00:13:15.61
they have some very
important things that you and I
00:13:15.81\00:13:18.54
need to know about them.
00:13:18.74\00:13:20.06
One: you find the
first four are four horsemen.
00:13:20.36\00:13:24.34
And those four horsemen tell
about conditions on the earth.
00:13:24.65\00:13:29.59
But the last
three are not horsemen,
00:13:29.89\00:13:32.65
and there is a decided change
after the fourth horseman.
00:13:32.75\00:13:38.07
Then you have three
seals that deal with
00:13:38.27\00:13:42.32
God's judgment upon the wicked.
00:13:42.53\00:13:45.85
And that's what we'll
be looking at tonight.

But the reason I mention that is

there are four
horsemen and then three seals

and there's a
separation and difference.

You'll find that
same scenario carried on

with the seven trumpets.

And you'll find the
same scenario carried on

with the seven last plagues.

So as we get into
those, watch for that because

you're going to find the Lord
divides them: the first four

and then the last three.

Does that, and
you'll see that taking place

as we study
those different ones.

one of the living creatures

first one, the lion -

"Come and see. "

Now evidently with
Christ opening these seals

the living creature has invited
John to come and take a look

in there and John sees
what is revealed in that seal.

That's what happens here.

So let's see what
he sees in this seal.

It says:

So here he sees this
man on a white horse.

Has on his head
a crown and a bow,

and he's going out to
conquer and to conquer.

Now let me start out by saying

that white is used in the
scripture over and over and over
00:15:27.24\00:15:32.20
and over again.
00:15:32.40\00:15:33.67
Not only does it
talk about a white horse
00:15:33.97\00:15:36.43
but it talks about all
kinds of things being white.
00:15:36.73\00:15:39.17
It talks about
having white robes.
00:15:39.37\00:15:40.79
It talks about white garments.
00:15:40.99\00:15:42.33
Talks about a white
throne; talks about white hair.
00:15:42.54\00:15:45.09
Talks about a white stone;
talks about a white cloud.
00:15:45.29\00:15:48.33
All those. White
represents purity.
00:15:48.63\00:15:51.50
Represents righteousness.
00:15:51.80\00:15:53.46
Put it down,
friends... there is no place,

no place anywhere in
God's Word without exception...

never is there a
place where God uses white

to apply to the antichrist.

Did you follow me?

And those people
that take this white horse

and try to apply
it to the antichrist

are totally out of place
00:16:15.62\00:16:17.46
because He never applies
white to an antichrist...

just does not do that.
00:16:21.95\00:16:23.58
It represents purity;
represents righteousness.

And so this rider is
coming forth on a white horse

to conquer and to conquer.

He's going forth.
This represents the gospel.

The gospel is pure - it's
righteousness - and God has
00:16:39.56\00:16:43.89
given it to be
preached to the world.

And Paul gives a little
indication of what's happening

here because he
talks about this. Listen:

And by the way, the crown that's
on his head is a laurel wreath

which represents victory.
This is what is happening there.

This is what Paul said:

Paul is saying that in his day
00:17:26.99\00:17:30.23
the gospel had been preached
to everyone at that time.

Folks, the gospel went out
with such tremendous victory -
00:17:35.15\00:17:41.12
and was accepted - that
by the end of the 1st century
00:17:41.33\00:17:45.01
there were 5,000,000 Christians.
00:17:45.31\00:17:48.23
Now you stop and
think that in 70 years
00:17:49.73\00:17:52.89
it has gone from
twelve to 5,000,000.
00:17:53.19\00:17:59.11
That's how many
people have accepted... So
00:17:59.41\00:18:01.66
when it talks about Him going
out to conquer and to conquer
00:18:01.86\00:18:04.60
indeed it has done that.
It's gone forth with great power
00:18:04.81\00:18:08.52
and many many people
have accepted it and believed.

That's why this horse is white.
00:18:12.75\00:18:14.83
That's why he goes out
to conquer and to conquer.

This covers the date
from about 31 AD to 100 AD.

caution you about this.

The Bible gives
periods of time here.

But don't tie those dates down

in stone because
they overlap one another,

and that's talking
about a section of time...

All right, the second one:

This horse is red,

and he's gone out and
he's going to do what?

He's going to take peace
from the earth and kill people.

Has a great sword. Let me
just say a word about the sword.

Back in those days there
were two types of swords.

There was one sword that
they used that was a short sword
00:19:42.24\00:19:46.94
and that was used for
hand-to-hand fighting close up.
00:19:47.24\00:19:51.18
But they also had a long
sword that was about 4' long
00:19:51.48\00:19:55.16
that was used by
those that rode on horses.
00:19:55.46\00:19:58.72
And when it
speaks of a sword here
00:19:59.02\00:20:02.03
that's the kind of
sword that it's talking about.

And he went out here to
take peace from the earth;

should kill many...
and he had a great sword.

Folks, any time in history

that the gospel has moved with
great rapidity across the earth

and there has been a revival
and people have reached out
00:20:20.76\00:20:23.48
and accepted the Lord and
there's been a tremendous influx
00:20:23.68\00:20:27.01
in Christianity there
has always been persecution.
00:20:27.22\00:20:31.30
I mean the devil - every
time it's ever happened -
00:20:32.67\00:20:35.80
the devil has been
there to persecute the church.
00:20:36.00\00:20:39.15
And here as the church
grew with such rapidity
00:20:39.35\00:20:42.66
in the first
century, all of a sudden Rome
00:20:42.86\00:20:46.80
turned her hatred upon the
church because it looked like
00:20:47.00\00:20:50.58
Christianity was
going to take over
00:20:50.78\00:20:53.15
because it had
moved with such rapidity.
00:20:53.46\00:20:55.55
And so they turned
their wrath upon the church
00:20:55.85\00:20:58.55
and they began to
persecute the people.
00:20:58.75\00:21:00.64
If you were a Christian,
you could be hauled in
00:21:00.94\00:21:05.48
before the
magistrate. If you did not
00:21:05.78\00:21:10.41
offer as a sign of worship your
allegiance to the Roman Empire,

then you were
taken... taken to the arena.
00:21:17.14\00:21:21.25
And there in the arena were
those people who had stood firm
00:21:21.55\00:21:27.28
for their belief in the Lord
Jesus Christ and Christianity.

And lions that hadn't
eaten in days were turned loose

upon those people...
they became food for lions.

It talks about it
as a terrible time.

This was the period of time
from about 100 AD to 313 AD.

There was a period of time
in there under Diocletian...

talks about ten years in which

he fiercely
persecuted the church.

From about 310 AD...

or excuse me, 300
AD to about 310 AD,

this is the time that
Diocletian persecuted the church
00:22:22.22\00:22:25.79
with such great,
great hated and literally
00:22:25.99\00:22:30.83
thousands gave their
life for what they believed.
00:22:31.03\00:22:35.12
And by the way, if you
notice that text in Revelation
00:22:35.32\00:22:37.96
the 2nd chapter, the time -
as we studied the 7 churches -
00:22:38.16\00:22:41.39
the time of Smyrna parallels
this same period of time.
00:22:41.49\00:22:45.38
That's what it's talking about.
00:22:45.58\00:22:47.66
OK, this was a
time of persecution.
00:22:47.96\00:22:50.69
Then we come to
this next horse. It says:
00:22:50.99\00:22:54.85
Now,
00:23:24.29\00:23:27.36
you'll find almost invariably
00:23:28.66\00:23:31.60
not only when
Christianity advances
00:23:31.90\00:23:35.22
and many many people
reach out and accept the Lord
00:23:35.52\00:23:39.12
and it grows, that the
devil has persecuted it.
00:23:39.33\00:23:42.32
But if he cannot
accomplish his means
00:23:42.62\00:23:46.85
by persecution he uses something
that, as far as I know,
00:23:47.05\00:23:52.48
has never failed...
00:23:52.68\00:23:54.66
and that is by
compromise, flattery,
00:23:54.86\00:24:00.41
enticement, he has been
able to lead people away.
00:24:00.71\00:24:05.94
That's why the Lord Jesus
Christ says to each one of you:

"Be careful, watch out,
for the cares of this life. "
00:24:10.44\00:24:16.38
If he can just get
you... you... you remember when
00:24:16.68\00:24:19.38
the children of Israel were on
their way to the Promised Land
00:24:19.68\00:24:24.02
and you remember
the king there - Moab -
00:24:24.32\00:24:28.37
was afraid of them. And he
went and hired this prophet
00:24:28.67\00:24:32.07
by the name of
Baal... Balaam, excuse me,
00:24:32.17\00:24:35.67
Balaam and ask him
to come and to curse
00:24:35.70\00:24:39.25
the children of Israel.
00:24:39.45\00:24:41.00
And you remember he
went up there on the mountain
00:24:41.30\00:24:43.67
and got everything ready
and tried to curse them...
00:24:43.77\00:24:46.38
but instead of cursing
them he wound up blessing them.
00:24:46.58\00:24:49.41
Three times tried...
00:24:49.72\00:24:51.97
three times
wound up blessing them.
00:24:52.27\00:24:54.30
And finally the king
was so distraught with him

he said: "Get out of here.
You're not doing... helping me

at all. You're
making it worse! "

But Balaam wasn't dumb, folks.

Balaam knew what
he couldn't accomplish

by blessing them -
or by cursing them -

he could accomplish another way.
00:25:14.29\00:25:17.01
And listen to what happened:

Uh, he got these Moabite women
00:25:37.37\00:25:39.87
to go down and to
lead these people astray.
00:25:40.18\00:25:45.08
Sexual immorality...
worship of their god.
00:25:45.38\00:25:49.56
Anything he could do to
get them to turn from their God
00:25:49.86\00:25:53.25
he was able to accomplish.
00:25:53.45\00:25:55.03
And so that's the reason
you have this third horse
00:25:55.33\00:25:58.95
that's black.

See? Black representing
just the opposite of white.

Where white was purity, black
was just the opposite of that.

And so he's riding
on this black horse,

and this is what he's
accomplishing through it.

Woodhouse in his
book on the Apocalypse

had this to say:

Let me just stop right there.

That's a danger,
folks, that we face so much.

That the
forefathers were believers...

staunch in their belief.
And they believed it and they

held to it and they
gave their life for it

and they preached it
with everything they had.

But as it gets farther and
farther from its foundation

we lose the sense of urgency.

It became more and more corrupt.

This is what happened
to the church: it moved.

Lost all the thing
that it had, and so he said:

Well, let me start out
by talking about a denarius.

A denarius was a day's wage.
00:27:57.74\00:28:00.91
That was a
coin... that's a denarius
00:28:01.21\00:28:04.17
and it was a day's
wage. And so a day's wage

you could buy a quart of wheat.
00:28:09.49\00:28:12.53
But drought, folks,
00:28:14.87\00:28:17.79
drought definitely
affects strongly grain.

And so what they couldn't buy...

and if they couldn't they could
buy something that was not as
00:28:26.04\00:28:30.26
nourishing and not as
good... and that was barley.
00:28:30.46\00:28:34.13
They could buy three
quarts of barley for it.
00:28:34.43\00:28:37.38
What does that mean spiritually?
00:28:37.58\00:28:38.97
It means these people
were being served spiritually
00:28:39.17\00:28:42.18
not very good food.
