among these churches...

They are under His
care, under His guidance,

read about this church

the Lord is doing

you, these are personal letters

That's what they are.

They were letters that
Christ gave to His angel.

and gave them to John,

to the seven churches.

So they're
personal letters from Jesus.

something, wouldn't it?

churches and saying:

And so tonight He addresses us

to listen and to follow.

Brotherly love. This church
or this city - Philadelphia -

was named after
Adelus Philadelphus.

And he... his brother
was the king of Lydia,

and there was a very,
very strong bond of loyalty
00:13:24.99\00:13:30.81
and love between
those two brothers.

And that's the reason
this was called Philadelphia.

It was named after this man
because there was brotherly love

between him and his brother.

And so it has carried that name.

This is the other church -

Smyrna was the other one -

this is the other one
that there is no reproof.

God doesn't say anything
that they were doing wrong.

He talks about and
commends them and all.

And this is basically,
folks, what has to happen -

to the church of Laodicea.

traced where these churches are

Aegean Sea, until we got to
Pergamos... and then we moved

east to Thyatira and then
to Sardis. If you go 28 miles

further southeast or
almost direct east from Sardis
00:14:53.77\00:14:58.24
you come to Philadelphia.

Church - city - of Philadelphia:

city of brotherly love.

This city
00:15:07.99\00:15:11.51
was
strategically located, folks,
00:15:11.81\00:15:14.91
because it actually controlled
00:15:15.21\00:15:19.53
a very narrow pass
that opened between the
00:15:19.83\00:15:23.97
Hermus and the Maender Valleys.
00:15:24.17\00:15:27.38
Maender Valley. And
in order to get to this
00:15:27.58\00:15:31.28
you had to go through this pass.
00:15:31.48\00:15:33.13
And this was the
way that the mail came,
00:15:33.33\00:15:37.79
the trade came, commerce came.
00:15:38.09\00:15:40.48
And the officials that
lived here in Philadelphia

controlled who
went through that pass.

They had the key that
opened into that... into

the rest of Asia Minor.

And so they held
a very secure place.

But Mount Tmolus...

they still are
connected somewhat with that.

And of all the
cities that we've looked at

this is the one that constantly
has a problem with earthquakes.

I mean, this place has
been destroyed time and time
00:16:17.29\00:16:21.84
and time again by earthquakes.
00:16:22.04\00:16:24.25
In fact, history
reads where these people
00:16:24.35\00:16:28.94
would go out and live in
tents because they were afraid
00:16:29.24\00:16:32.93
of the aftershocks and all
that were taking place here.

And very, very important to
find something that was stable,

something that didn't move
00:16:41.66\00:16:43.59
because of the
earthquakes that took place.

And that's the reason it
speaks of pellers in here.

And here are some pellers
right there in Philadelphia.

And they looked upon them as
something that couldn't be moved

that was solid and
stood. And therefore

a peller to them had
great, great significance

as far as they were concerned.

And they understood
what Christ was talking about

when He spoke of the church
and talked about the people

see how He identifies Himself

You see this was the pass. They
controlled who went through it.

And He is the One who
has the key that opens

church of Philadelphia:

have set before you an open door

little strength. "

There's a reason for that.

"You've kept My Word and
have not denied My name. "

I need to give you some infor-
mation about the church age

because there's
a lot here, folks.

And as I have told you on
one presentation after another,

don't let the dates
tie you in too much.

Those dates just give
you an idea of when it was

because these
overlap from one to another.

I've got to give you some
background so you understand

what is happening here
with this particular church

at this particular
time in church history.

As we talked
about the Reformation...

Sardis how the Reformation

had been there,
what had happened.

And we talked about how the
counter-Reformation had come in

and had actually brought
the Reformation to a stop

and the influence that it
had upon the world at that time.

Not only was the counter-
Reformation taking place

and people had lost their
fervor, they had lost their

witness, they had lost what they
had gotten in the Reformation

and they now as a
body... as a movement...

was dead. They had
lost their witness.

They were no longer
going out and standing up

for what they
believed and preaching

and living the life
that they were to live.

All that had come to an end.

Their churches now...
they had become stagnant

and there wasn't
much happening in them.

The people had
forgotten what it was all about.

Godliness was
something they had forgotten,

no longer followed.

At the same time
this is going on,

something is happening
because many of these people

through the Dark
Ages were suppressed.

They had a very rough time.

They had been slaughtered.

They had been actually killed
by the hundreds and thousands

of them that had
lost their lives.

And many of these people
had forsaken religion and all.

At this time you have a
rise in Europe of what is called
00:20:50.51\00:20:55.99
intellectualism,
00:20:56.19\00:20:57.59
and this began to
come to the forefront.

And you find a man by
the name of Thomas Paine
00:21:01.52\00:21:06.47
has written a
book. And in this book
00:21:06.67\00:21:11.49
he talks about God
because at that time
00:21:11.52\00:21:17.47
people believed in God. But
he took the scripture to task,
00:21:17.67\00:21:23.51
and he wrote a book
called The Age of Reason.
00:21:23.82\00:21:28.38
And he attacked the scripture
and what it had to say.
00:21:28.58\00:21:33.25
And that book
began to gain ascendency
00:21:33.55\00:21:36.90
across all of Europe and
people gave up their belief.
00:21:37.10\00:21:43.06
And France was the
country that led out in this.
00:21:44.29\00:21:48.85
In fact, because of his book
00:21:49.15\00:21:52.85
France decided to
forsake religion all together
00:21:53.15\00:21:56.96
and became a godless country.
00:21:57.26\00:21:59.36
They took the
Bible... threw it out.
00:21:59.56\00:22:01.04
Threw it in the streets
00:22:01.34\00:22:02.65
and said: "We will no longer
believe in the Word of God. "
00:22:02.85\00:22:05.76
And they
established in the place of it
00:22:06.06\00:22:08.56
the Age of Reason.
00:22:08.76\00:22:11.00
They said: "We
will think it through.
00:22:11.30\00:22:13.56
The Age of Reason...
this is how we will live. "

And as they
threw out the scripture

they threw out a
lot of other things...

because with the
scripture went morality.
00:22:23.43\00:22:26.50
And they tossed it out.

And all the things
that they warred against...

If you were a believer
in God you were in danger.

In fact, they went
out and gathered up

people who believed in God

and they took them downtown
Paris and they guillotined them.

And they killed so many of them

that blood ran down the
gutters of the streets of Paris.

It was a horrible time.

And this was what was going on

1796 AD and in that
period of time and all.

It became so bad because
the people that believed in God

they fled the country.

They... they put to
death thousands and thousands

of people... and so
they fled the country.

And with them they took
the intelligenci and all that

of the country. And
all of a sudden France

realized that she
had to do something.

And so she voted back in
religion into the country

because they had wrecked
the whole... whole country.

This is the end of the 1700s,

so you have religion
isn't doing anything.

It's basically dead.

The intelligenci of
the world has decided

the church of Philadelphia.

But this is the condition,

as we move in because
we will find certain things

that are
happening. All of a sudden

Lord and His moving,

uh, things begin to take place.

When France
voted back in religion

then all of a sudden in
different places of the world

the religion begins to
come back. And you'll find

in 1804 AD the British
Bible Society was established.

And for the first time now
the people begin to have access

They've been able to...
were able to get hold of it

something they could do.

begin to stand up and preach.

an effect upon the people.

that foreign missions

becomes available.

You have individuals like
Livingston going to Africa.

men that began to stand up

and preach the Word of God.

You take it in the
time of John Wesley

the churches
were basically dead.

I mean, that's...
they just were dead,

and they wouldn't even accept
what John Wesley preached.

In fact, when he went back
to the hometown where his father

they wouldn't let him
preach in his father's church.

In fact, he went out
to the cemetery and stood

on his father's
grave and preached.

Because the
thing had died so much,

there wasn't anything there.

But these men began to
