Well, step by step

the different churches.

Started out with Ephesus

church that had a problem...

it had left its first love.

And then we
looked at Smyrna which

went through a great
amount of suffering...

and yet no rebuke.

Christ talked
about what she had done.

Told her to be faithful.

But there was no
rebuke to that church.

And then we looked at Pergamos,

this church that
finds itself elevated.

And we find the inroads
of the world and the state

coming into the church.

Then we took a look at Thyatira

and we found out that as
the world moved into the church

much of what she held she lost.

What she faced at the
beginning of the Reformation.

And now we're taking a look
at Sardis here... the 5th one.

And He addresses
the church and says:

To this particular church...
writing and giving them counsel

as to what is happening.

This word Sardis
means that which remains.

And that's very, very important

because of the situation
of that church at that time:

that which remains.

As you can see on the
map, we've come from Ephesus

up to Smyrna,
Pergamos... all along the coast

of the Aegean Sea.

Then we moved to the east
and a little south to Thyatira

and now we're moving
a little farther east

and a little farther
down to that of Sardis.

But when you come down
here and you start over to

Sardis, all of a sudden
you come to a large mountain.

Mount Tmolus rises 6,700 ft.

from the plain there. And as you
get over close to the mountain

and approach it, up on
the edge of the mountain

partly up on the side of
the mountain about 1,500 ft.

you find the city of Sardis.

That's where it was built.

Behind there you can
see... these are the ruins

and behind of it you
can see the fog there...

but there's Mount
Tmolus back behind it.

This is where Sardis was built.

This was a Lydian city

built about 1100 BC was
when it started and all.

And it was... it became the
capital of the Lydian Empire

and was an
extremely wealthy city

and really governed
the whole part of the world

at that time from Lydia.

And it was a very,
very important part.

Went there... and there
they carried on their activites

and operated the
government and all from that.

Since it was built here on this

side of the mountain

the embankment that came up
there was almost perpendicular.

I mean, and the only
way you could get to Sardis

was through a
narrow passage up that.

And it was easily guarded and
was considered impregnable...

that you couldn't
possibly get into it.

The only problem with that is

is when you have
something like that

and you think something can't
change or can't be overtaken

or it's impregnable or whatever,

you have a tendency
to be over-confident.

You know. And
when Cyrus of the Medes

came down to where that
city was there in the valley

they saw him there but
they didn't pay any attention.

They figured it was impregnable;

that nobody could get to
them; that they were all right.

And one of Cyrus's soldiers

went over that night to
the edge of the mountain

and was just studying
it... trying to figure out

how they might
could get into the city.

And while he was there,
he noticed some soldiers -

Lydian soldiers up
there in the city -

talking and laughing. And
while they were, one of them

dropped his helmet, and his
helmet fell over the embankment

down quite a little ways.

And he watched this
soldier come down the embankment

through a pathway that
they didn't know about...

came down and got his
helmet and went back up.

And he went and got the soldiers
and followed that same thing

And they overthrew the city

Over-confident, see?

So often we can
be over-confident.

I hear - and I'll say a
little more about this -

but I hear church members say:

"Oh, we've got the truth. "

Be careful. You know,
there's a great, great danger

in being so confident
that I don't give study,

I don't give care of
the truth that I should.

Very, very important.

Also, this was where
most historians will tell you

that money was invented -
coin money - was invented.

And you're looking at a coin
that was minted at that time.

And this was
where it came into use

and exchange was
in this city of Sardis

where they began
to use coin money.

So Sardis had a lot of things
that was very interesting,

very helpful, and gave impetus

to the world's
wealth and direction.

Now He comes to
His identification.

Christ is identifying
Himself to them, and He says:

You see, it's the Holy Spirit -

the seven Spirits,
the Spirit of God -

and that word star,
folks, refers to messenger -

it refers to
minister. And I can tell you

it's only when the Spirit of God
00:16:22.09\00:16:25.27
fills a person that he shines.

Put it down. It
doesn't work any other way.

Without the
Spirit of God it's dead.

It's the Spirit
of God that comes in

and makes the difference,
lights up the person's life.

That's what it does.
He - Christ - is the One

Spirits and the seven stars.

And so what is the condition
of the church at Sardis?

What do we find?

All of the churches...

all four of the churches
that we have looked at...

when we come to this
part here where He talks about

the condition of the
church He has commended them,

but this one He condemns.

He says: "You have a
name that you are alive

but you are dead. "

Something very, very
drastically has happened.

They have lost their
spiritual experience.

They have lost their
experience with Christ.

They are
spiritually no longer alive.

Now... church age.
Uh, again I must emphasize

this is talking about an age.

Really when we say
beginning about 1700 AD

that really laps
back into the other age

because there's several
things that happened back then

that brought about the
condition of the church here.

And there's some
things in 1800 that take place

that lap into the next
one. So don't try to tie it down

to an exact date...
but it represents an age.

are just to kind of give you

an idea of the time
slot that it fits in.

But this was the period of time
that several things happened -

that take place - that
typify the church of Sardis

and what happened as far as
the church age is concerned,

You see, as you read

about the church of Sardis

God doesn't say a word
about there being a Jezebel.

He doesn't say anything
about there being a Balaam.

He doesn't say anything about
there being the Nicolatians.

You don't read any of that
about that in the church of

Sardis. Why not?

I mean, this church is existing.

Why... why doesn't He
talk about this and say

"these are
problems with this church? "

He doesn't. And the
reason He doesn't, folks,

as far as the
church age is concerned

the Reformation has
cleared all that out.

I mean, those men have
got up and they have preached

and they've cleared
all that kind of stuff out.

And so through the
preaching of Luther

got up and told the
people that they found faith

in Jesus Christ and it
was in their commitment to Him

their acceptance of

the gospel to those people
and he cleared out all those

teachings of Gnosticism and
all that... got rid of them.

Along came
Calvin, along came Knox

and Zwingli and all that

and they cleared that
out in the Reformation.

These people had the
truth; they knew what it was.

It was clear,

and that had all been done.

So this is... this is why
you don't read anything about

Jezebel or
Balaam or Nicolatians.

Those are all things
that they had taken care of;

the Reformation had cleared
all that out of the churches.

But the Reformation

was tremendously hard

on the Catholic church.

The reason it was is, of course,

Luther and Knox and Zwingli

and all those men
preached righteousness by faith.

They taught the people that
Jesus Christ was their Redeemer.

That He was the Mediator.

That He was their Savior.

That the church
did not save them.

And they taught
them all those truths.

And secondly they
did something else:

they preached the
prophecies of God's Word.

They stood up and
preached about the prophecies.

They preached Revelation!

And Luther got up and he said:

"That beast there
in Revelation 13...

that's the papal power. "

And preached it
and talked about it.

And those...
preaching of those things

pulled the people
out of Catholicism

and they came out of
Catholicism by the thousands.

Folks, just through the
preaching of John Calvin

500,000 Frenchmen
accepted the Reformation.

So to give you an
idea of what was happening,

these people were
leaving and these were...

many, many of these people were
the intelligenci of the country.

They were teachers and
professor and businessmen.

This is what was coming
out and accepting Christ

and the Reformation
and taking their stand.

And so what had happened
had shaken the Catholic church

clear to the very foundation.

And because of that, they
called what was known as the

Council of Trent.

The Council of Trent
was to get the church back

on a solid foundation

and to meet the
problem of the Reformation.

This was what the
purpose of it was.

And there was a
whole group of cardinals

and archbishops

these people that were
leaders in the Catholic church -

This is where it must stand.

group of cardinals
