Thank you and good evening ladies and gentlemen, 00:00:59.76\00:01:02.61 to each and every. 00:01:02.65\00:01:04.95 A special welcome to my friends. 00:01:05.48\00:01:08.43 The Blue Mountain boys and girls are here. 00:01:08.46\00:01:11.77 Remember that story I made up about playing and 00:01:13.05\00:01:15.03 singing in the band? 00:01:15.06\00:01:17.02 Here's the proof right here tonight. 00:01:17.05\00:01:19.40 It's good to see all of you. 00:01:19.43\00:01:21.21 Are you ready to travel? 00:01:22.57\00:01:23.85 A few evenings back, I had a little quiz if you'll recall. 00:01:25.81\00:01:30.76 I said we're going to go to the city that's said to be 00:01:30.79\00:01:34.65 the most romantic in all the world. 00:01:34.68\00:01:36.82 And several of you said Paris. You remember that? 00:01:37.38\00:01:40.10 And I said, "No, not Paris but rather Venice. " 00:01:40.81\00:01:43.51 Well tonight, we're going to go to Paris. 00:01:44.04\00:01:46.97 The Kingston Trio sang it, I suppose, for all of us and best, 00:01:47.00\00:01:51.79 when they sang, "A young man goes to Paris, 00:01:51.82\00:01:55.30 as every young man should. 00:01:55.33\00:01:57.13 For something in the Paris air does a young man good. " 00:01:57.16\00:02:01.36 This city, like the major cities of the world, is born on 00:02:03.33\00:02:07.04 the banks of a river. 00:02:07.07\00:02:08.22 Here, of course, it's the river Seine. 00:02:08.25\00:02:11.37 And we, oft times, would pronounce it "sane". 00:02:11.40\00:02:14.78 No matter how you say it, it means, "the fisherman's net". 00:02:14.81\00:02:18.85 That which he catches fish in. 00:02:18.88\00:02:21.11 On the banks of the Seine is the chief identifying 00:02:21.80\00:02:25.67 feature of this city. 00:02:25.70\00:02:26.77 That is the Eiffel Tower. 00:02:26.80\00:02:28.78 The Eiffel Tower was built for the World Exposition 00:02:28.81\00:02:34.32 that was held here at the turn of the prior century. 00:02:34.35\00:02:37.46 About 1898 or 1900, right in then, 00:02:37.49\00:02:41.73 this the Eiffel Tower was built. 00:02:41.76\00:02:44.50 And when the thing was built, the folks just 00:02:44.53\00:02:47.40 had a fit about it. 00:02:47.43\00:02:48.76 The locals denigrated it, they put it down. 00:02:48.79\00:02:52.18 And they protested regarding the thing. 00:02:52.59\00:02:55.29 They said, "Our city is a city of wide streets and 00:02:55.32\00:02:59.34 lovely boulevards, beautiful statues. 00:02:59.37\00:03:03.70 And here you build this iron skeleton in the 00:03:03.73\00:03:07.24 midst of all of it. 00:03:07.27\00:03:08.45 Tear it down. " 00:03:08.48\00:03:10.28 And now they're more proud of it than any other 00:03:10.31\00:03:12.64 single feature, I think, in the whole city. 00:03:12.67\00:03:15.18 For those of you with an engineering background and 00:03:15.21\00:03:17.36 interest, it is what is known as a perpendicular cantilever. 00:03:17.39\00:03:21.48 Now that, to me, sounds like a contradiction of terms. 00:03:21.51\00:03:23.85 But in any event, that's what it is. 00:03:23.88\00:03:26.12 And at the top of it... 00:03:26.15\00:03:28.33 And by the way, when you go to the top, you're up 00:03:28.36\00:03:30.13 nearly a thousand feet high. 00:03:30.16\00:03:31.54 I was up there once. I'm never going again. 00:03:31.57\00:03:33.71 The breeze was blowing and that thing was going 00:03:34.44\00:03:36.81 back and forth like this. 00:03:36.84\00:03:38.45 And I didn't have my sea legs and besides that, 00:03:38.48\00:03:41.88 I'm afraid of heights. 00:03:41.91\00:03:43.36 I sometimes fear I shall fall from here. 00:03:43.39\00:03:46.79 Atop that, there's a restaurant at the very top of it, 00:03:47.27\00:03:51.00 at about the 800 or 850 foot level. 00:03:51.03\00:03:54.03 And then there are towers that go up another 200 feet. 00:03:54.06\00:03:57.38 And atop those towers are the lights of warning. 00:03:57.41\00:04:01.03 And there are television antennas and radio things 00:04:01.06\00:04:04.19 and all like that. 00:04:04.22\00:04:05.19 And some poor guy has to go up there every other day 00:04:05.20\00:04:08.32 to check the bulbs and polish the lenses. 00:04:08.35\00:04:11.54 I'm glad that's not my job. 00:04:11.57\00:04:14.43 Couldn't do it. 00:04:14.98\00:04:16.18 I just couldn't do it. 00:04:16.74\00:04:18.58 Well, there are many other things to see. 00:04:18.61\00:04:21.13 I want you now to take a look at this city from an 00:04:21.16\00:04:24.68 aerial vantage point. 00:04:24.71\00:04:26.04 The city was born on an island in the middle 00:04:26.07\00:04:28.24 of the river Seine, a natural island. 00:04:28.27\00:04:30.01 And this city today is divided by that. 00:04:30.04\00:04:33.05 When you look upstream of the island, it is then divided 00:04:33.08\00:04:36.12 right bank and left bank. 00:04:36.15\00:04:37.65 And you've heard them talk about the city of Paris that way. 00:04:37.68\00:04:40.38 The artists, you know, the sculptures and the painters. 00:04:40.41\00:04:43.50 They're left bank people. 00:04:43.53\00:04:45.98 And the folks from Idaho, they put over on the right bank. 00:04:46.01\00:04:49.09 Well, there is one thing here that folks come to see 00:04:51.49\00:04:56.35 on the island, largely, and that is this lovely, 00:04:56.38\00:04:59.85 lovely gothic cathedral. 00:04:59.88\00:05:02.59 Many say, and I think I would agree, that it's the most 00:05:03.48\00:05:06.13 lovely gothic cathedral in the world. 00:05:06.16\00:05:08.50 Notre-Dame de Paris. 00:05:10.40\00:05:12.31 We simply say Notre Dame. The Cathedral of Notre Dame. 00:05:12.34\00:05:15.68 Our Lady of Paris. 00:05:15.71\00:05:17.53 And every time I see this picture, my mind goes back 00:05:17.56\00:05:21.28 to that movie that I saw when I was a bit younger. 00:05:21.31\00:05:24.48 "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" Do you remember him? 00:05:24.51\00:05:27.74 Old Quasimodo lived up in there amongst the bells. 00:05:27.77\00:05:30.95 And he wasn't very pretty but he was kind and sweet and good. 00:05:32.43\00:05:36.86 And he saved that street girl, you know. 00:05:36.89\00:05:39.73 Hid her up there from the revolutionary mobs and all. 00:05:39.76\00:05:43.00 And then, finally, he fell from a gargoyle 00:05:43.03\00:05:45.66 at the end of the story. 00:05:45.69\00:05:46.66 That movie has been made on at least four separate occasions. 00:05:46.67\00:05:49.96 And from time to time someone will ask me, 00:05:49.99\00:05:51.67 "Which is your favorite?" 00:05:51.70\00:05:54.09 And I still like the Lon Chaney one best. 00:05:54.12\00:05:56.97 I think it's nearer to the facts and nearer to history. 00:05:57.60\00:06:00.20 And so that's my favorite of all. 00:06:00.23\00:06:02.14 We're going to talk more about the gargoyles 00:06:03.02\00:06:05.04 in just a little bit. 00:06:05.07\00:06:06.14 But before we do that, let me just tell you this. 00:06:06.17\00:06:09.25 When I was here, there was a man that was arrested 00:06:09.28\00:06:12.84 when he came down from the top of those towers. 00:06:12.87\00:06:15.74 You can go up the stairway and go in and amongst the bells. 00:06:15.77\00:06:18.79 You don't want to be there when the bells strike the hour 00:06:18.82\00:06:21.37 because your ears are going to ring. 00:06:21.40\00:06:22.73 But this guy had a knack for walking a tight rope or a wire. 00:06:22.76\00:06:28.63 And he had sneaked up there somehow. 00:06:29.38\00:06:31.39 Under the cover of darkness, I don't know. 00:06:31.42\00:06:33.04 But he got his cable with him and somehow he stretched 00:06:33.07\00:06:36.78 it between those towers and tied it off. 00:06:36.81\00:06:39.13 And then when the crowd was gathered by the hundreds 00:06:39.16\00:06:42.69 down here in front of the cathedral, he walked 00:06:42.72\00:06:45.64 between those two towers. 00:06:45.67\00:06:47.44 Up there about 300 feet high, I think, or something like that. 00:06:47.47\00:06:50.41 Well, he paid his fine but he had his 15 minutes of fame. 00:06:50.44\00:06:54.94 Now I want you, from across the banks of the Seine River, 00:06:56.07\00:06:58.97 to have a look at this cathedral because this is said to be the 00:06:59.00\00:07:02.30 finest example of the flying buttress style of architecture. 00:07:02.33\00:07:06.62 A flying buttress is nothing more or less than an arm 00:07:06.65\00:07:11.03 that has a foundation several feet out and away from 00:07:11.13\00:07:14.19 the wall of the church. 00:07:14.22\00:07:15.23 And that arm reaches up and supports the wall just below 00:07:15.26\00:07:19.10 where the roof sits atop. 00:07:19.13\00:07:21.00 And when you support the roof in that way, you can leave 00:07:21.03\00:07:24.91 vast openings in the wall and fill those openings 00:07:24.94\00:07:28.43 with stained glass. 00:07:28.46\00:07:29.61 And that they have done here. 00:07:29.64\00:07:31.11 Oh and by the way, if ever you go to Paris in the summer time 00:07:31.14\00:07:35.27 or when the weather's really nice, take a boat ride at sunset 00:07:35.30\00:07:38.47 down the river Seine and they have a program. 00:07:38.50\00:07:43.21 Lights flash on the buildings and the loud speakers tell you 00:07:43.24\00:07:46.82 the story and give the history behind it all. 00:07:46.85\00:07:49.04 And I found it very relaxing as well as informative. 00:07:49.07\00:07:52.73 The flying buttresses of the Cathedral of Notre Dame. 00:07:52.76\00:07:56.26 This, for your interest sake by the way, was completed in 1193. 00:07:56.29\00:08:01.36 That's been a while back, huh. 00:08:01.39\00:08:04.37 Still standing strong. 00:08:04.40\00:08:05.66 Well from the top, we look upstream and we see 00:08:05.69\00:08:09.10 where the river forks, right bank and left bank, and 00:08:09.13\00:08:12.41 we see the tour boats coming down and it's a good ride. 00:08:12.44\00:08:16.30 Now in front of the cathedral itself, there are folks 00:08:16.33\00:08:20.24 by the dozens, sometimes by the hundreds. 00:08:20.27\00:08:22.50 And of course everyone has a camera or two. 00:08:22.53\00:08:25.37 But many have easel's with drawing pads. 00:08:25.40\00:08:30.14 Maybe they're doing chalk work, maybe it's pencil drawing. 00:08:30.17\00:08:32.81 Or maybe it is watercolor or oil or something else. 00:08:32.84\00:08:36.66 But they're painting the facade, the front of the church 00:08:36.69\00:08:40.83 because it is such a beautiful, beautiful thing to see. 00:08:40.86\00:08:44.57 And we're going to begin to look at it right now. 00:08:44.60\00:08:46.68 Above the doors of entry, there is kings row. 00:08:46.71\00:08:50.70 There they are. 00:08:50.73\00:08:51.70 They stand about 18 feet high. 00:08:51.71\00:08:53.86 Each has a crown on his head and a scepter in his hand. 00:08:53.89\00:08:58.38 And during the French Revolution, an angry mob 00:08:59.18\00:09:03.54 scaled the wall. 00:09:03.57\00:09:04.95 And men vented their anger by putting ropes around the 00:09:05.33\00:09:08.66 necks of those statues and pulling them down and 00:09:08.69\00:09:10.83 smashing them to pieces. 00:09:10.86\00:09:12.62 And when they were asked, "Why did you do that?" 00:09:12.66\00:09:15.48 they said, "Because we want to show our anger and our 00:09:15.51\00:09:19.07 disrespect for the kings of France who've sold us out. " 00:09:19.10\00:09:22.36 And then it was explained to the mob that these statues never 00:09:22.39\00:09:26.65 symbolized the kings of France, but the Bible kings 00:09:26.68\00:09:30.06 from the time of Saul and David, right down to the time of Jesus. 00:09:30.09\00:09:33.28 Well fortunately, they've been beautifully 00:09:33.31\00:09:35.14 replaced and restored. 00:09:35.17\00:09:37.14 But it is indeed one of the most beautifully carved 00:09:37.17\00:09:41.35 facades that I have ever seen. 00:09:41.38\00:09:43.53 Now to give you a little bit of a feel for the size, 00:09:43.56\00:09:45.59 way up at the top of the screen there is kings row. 00:09:45.62\00:09:49.42 Right up there. 00:09:49.45\00:09:50.56 And down here, the entry doors. 00:09:50.59\00:09:54.03 And then way at the bottom of the screen, there are the 00:09:54.06\00:09:56.06 heads of the people. 00:09:56.09\00:09:57.15 Now between the doors of entry, there is a carving 00:09:57.95\00:10:01.30 of Jesus done in marble. 00:10:01.33\00:10:02.84 And on either side then, six of His disciple apostles. 00:10:02.87\00:10:07.73 I want to take you inside but first a close up, if you'd like, 00:10:09.67\00:10:13.63 of those beautiful marble carvings. 00:10:13.66\00:10:15.97 And again, you just have to sort of pinch yourself 00:10:16.00\00:10:19.26 to be reminded that this is done hundreds of years ago 00:10:19.29\00:10:23.04 by men with crude tools, by our measurements today. 00:10:23.07\00:10:26.88 Hammers and chisels in their hands. 00:10:26.91\00:10:28.94 I think they did a good job. 00:10:28.97\00:10:31.05 Well, here they are on either side of Jesus 00:10:31.59\00:10:33.87 there in the very middle, and all kinds of other Bible stories 00:10:33.90\00:10:36.84 carved beneath them. 00:10:36.87\00:10:37.84 You recall that we have said on more than one occasion 00:10:37.85\00:10:40.05 that these great cathedrals were built during the dark ages 00:10:40.08\00:10:44.07 when folks were largely illiterate. 00:10:44.10\00:10:47.15 But if they were able to read or write, they couldn't read the 00:10:47.18\00:10:50.20 Bible, for Bibles were literally chained to monastery desks. 00:10:50.23\00:10:53.44 And so, in order to teach them the Bible stories 00:10:53.47\00:10:56.29 that they were permitted to hear and know, 00:10:56.32\00:10:58.51 they would decorate the churches with a statue, 00:10:58.54\00:11:02.40 with a monument, with a painting, 00:11:02.43\00:11:04.60 with a stained glass window, or some other illustrative device, 00:11:04.63\00:11:08.79 and then take the folks on tours throughout the cathedrals 00:11:08.82\00:11:12.31 or around the exterior as in this case and tell them 00:11:12.34\00:11:15.30 the Bible stories that go along with it. 00:11:15.33\00:11:17.81 Now, we're ready then to step inside. 00:11:17.84\00:11:21.63 Through the entry door, you're greeted by the Madonna. 00:11:22.46\00:11:26.21 She, after whom the cathedral is named, 00:11:26.24\00:11:28.63 Our Lady of Paris, with the baby Jesus in her arms. 00:11:28.66\00:11:33.16 Now, we have also on prior occasions said that a 00:11:33.19\00:11:37.39 true cathedral must be built in the shape of a cross. 00:11:37.42\00:11:40.47 Were the folks are seated for worship, that is the main nave. 00:11:40.50\00:11:44.93 And then at the high altar, there is a wing that goes out 00:11:44.96\00:11:48.37 on either side and that's the transept. 00:11:48.40\00:11:51.10 And then behind that, a little alcove called the apse. 00:11:51.13\00:11:54.26 And so, we're ready then to look down the main nave. 00:11:54.29\00:11:58.16 I've forgotten how many folks they say they can 00:12:00.90\00:12:03.65 comfortably seat in here, but hundreds and hundreds, 00:12:03.68\00:12:06.65 if not a few thousand as I recall now. 00:12:06.68\00:12:09.81 And in the apse, there you see some stained glass windows. 00:12:10.80\00:12:14.06 But the windows that most folk come to see are in the transept 00:12:14.09\00:12:18.76 and we're going to look at those. 00:12:18.79\00:12:19.76 But before we do that, let me remind you again 00:12:19.77\00:12:22.65 of the style of the gothic. 00:12:22.68\00:12:24.34 It is slender and delicate and spaghetti like as opposed 00:12:24.37\00:12:30.02 to the Romanesque which has broad columns and 00:12:30.05\00:12:33.01 big arches and all of that. 00:12:33.04\00:12:35.00 The basic difference between the two styles. 00:12:35.03\00:12:37.87 Alright. 00:12:37.90\00:12:39.26 Now, there is a story here in this painting that I 00:12:39.29\00:12:43.04 want to share with you tonight. 00:12:43.07\00:12:44.25 For hundreds and hundreds of years, when a king or queen 00:12:44.86\00:12:49.02 of Europe was coronated, the Pope would come from Rome 00:12:49.05\00:12:54.32 and he would be given the crown of coronation. 00:12:54.35\00:12:59.19 And at exactly the right moment after the bands had played 00:12:59.22\00:13:03.35 and all of the rest, he would walk down the center aisle 00:13:03.38\00:13:06.12 of the nave carrying in his hands the crown, 00:13:06.15\00:13:09.71 he would step up to the high altar, and then he would 00:13:09.74\00:13:13.89 reach out and place it upon the head of the king or the queen. 00:13:13.92\00:13:18.01 And that was to show the king, the world or whomever, 00:13:18.04\00:13:23.17 that the church, the leader of the church, was above the king. 00:13:23.20\00:13:29.51 And it was like that, ladies and gentlemen, for 1260 years. 00:13:30.23\00:13:33.34 From about 538 to 1798 when Napoleon put an end to it all 00:13:33.37\00:13:38.94 as we're going to talk right now. 00:13:38.97\00:13:40.47 So it's time for the coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte. 00:13:41.50\00:13:44.79 He was small in stature but he was a giant in his own mind. 00:13:45.68\00:13:50.41 Or someone said, a legend in his own mind. 00:13:51.37\00:13:53.76 He stood only about, let's see, about 4 feet and 11.5 inches 00:13:53.79\00:14:00.55 in his high healed boots. 00:14:00.58\00:14:02.43 And here's something else you're going to enjoy about Napoleon. 00:14:02.46\00:14:05.68 When his picture was painted, when his portrait was made, 00:14:06.72\00:14:11.60 he always, always wore a three piece suit, 00:14:11.63\00:14:16.31 he always wore a vest. 00:14:16.34\00:14:19.77 And he tucked his hand inside his vest like this. 00:14:20.45\00:14:23.72 And you've seen pictures like that, haven't you now. 00:14:23.75\00:14:26.56 Well, I've done a little bit of research and I can tell you 00:14:27.09\00:14:30.19 why he always wore the vest. 00:14:30.22\00:14:33.34 He had a little pot belly and he thought that the vest 00:14:34.91\00:14:39.81 would help hide it. 00:14:39.84\00:14:41.74 Cruel, Ron. 00:14:49.94\00:14:51.38 These people are cruel. 00:14:51.41\00:14:52.99 Alright then. 00:14:55.17\00:14:56.73 So let me finish this story now. 00:14:57.49\00:14:59.66 Let's get back to reality. 00:14:59.69\00:15:01.46 Here comes the Pope down the aisle, 00:15:01.49\00:15:03.79 he's carrying the crown, he comes up the high altar, 00:15:03.82\00:15:06.47 steps up and reaches out to place the crown on the head 00:15:06.50\00:15:09.02 of Napoleon, and at that instant Napoleon snatched the crown 00:15:09.05\00:15:12.12 from the hand of the Pope and put it upon his own head 00:15:12.15\00:15:15.83 to say to the church and to France and to the world, 00:15:15.86\00:15:20.49 "No one is worthy to crown Napoleon except Napoleon. " 00:15:20.52\00:15:25.49 And shortly afterward, he would make the Pope a captive. 00:15:25.99\00:15:29.20 And we're going to go out to the Palace of Fontainebleau 00:15:29.23\00:15:31.41 tomorrow night, by the way, in our travel. 00:15:31.44\00:15:33.79 We're going to go to Fontainebleau and we're 00:15:33.82\00:15:35.56 going to walk through the suite of rooms where the Pope 00:15:35.59\00:15:38.22 was made a captive. 00:15:38.25\00:15:39.60 So be sure to be here on time to travel with me. 00:15:39.63\00:15:41.64 And so history has been made here in so many different ways. 00:15:41.67\00:15:45.03 But none, I think, more fascinating than at the time 00:15:45.06\00:15:47.69 of the coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte. 00:15:47.72\00:15:50.74 Now we're going to begin to walk around the high altar. 00:15:51.28\00:15:54.26 And it's covered, up at about the 15 foot level, with carvings 00:15:54.29\00:16:00.00 that have been painted with oil paints and then much of it 00:16:00.03\00:16:03.10 encrusted with gold leaf. 00:16:03.13\00:16:04.52 And here, Bible stories are told. 00:16:04.55\00:16:06.58 We'll begin over at the extreme left because this is where 00:16:06.61\00:16:09.58 the story begins. 00:16:09.61\00:16:10.58 Here, we see Herod the Great. 00:16:10.59\00:16:12.51 He has a scepter and he has a crown. 00:16:12.54\00:16:14.30 And he's giving an order to his armies of the Roman legions. 00:16:14.33\00:16:18.34 They're to go to Bethlehem and destroy the little baby boys 00:16:18.37\00:16:22.12 two years of age and younger. 00:16:22.15\00:16:23.69 But the holy family has been warned and there go 00:16:23.72\00:16:27.33 Joseph and Mary. 00:16:27.36\00:16:28.79 Joseph's leading the little burro and there's Mary 00:16:28.82\00:16:31.19 and the baby Jesus in her arms. 00:16:31.22\00:16:33.10 They're going to go down to Egypt for a couple of years. 00:16:33.13\00:16:35.84 We move on around to the opposite side and we 00:16:35.87\00:16:37.89 come to the end of the ministry of Jesus. 00:16:37.92\00:16:40.06 And we see His triumphal entry into the city of Jerusalem. 00:16:40.09\00:16:44.22 And the folks are throwing their coats before Him and laying 00:16:44.25\00:16:47.75 palm fronds in front of His little animal there. 00:16:47.78\00:16:51.00 And then finally, we find Him in the upper room 00:16:51.03\00:16:54.19 washing the feet of His disciples and then sharing 00:16:54.22\00:16:58.47 with them the Lord's supper. 00:16:58.50\00:17:00.29 A spiritual washing before the eating of that spiritual meal. 00:17:00.32\00:17:05.40 And so again, further evidence of the way folks were taught 00:17:05.99\00:17:08.86 the Bible stories from the decorations 00:17:08.89\00:17:11.55 in and around the cathedrals. 00:17:11.58\00:17:14.06 Now, I told you we were going to enjoy the beauty 00:17:14.66\00:17:17.50 of the rose windows. 00:17:17.53\00:17:19.36 Here they are. 00:17:19.39\00:17:20.36 Those frames, ladies and gentlemen, are about 00:17:20.37\00:17:22.98 28 feet in diameter. 00:17:23.01\00:17:24.72 And every single frame tells a different Bible story. 00:17:25.53\00:17:29.03 This one and this one and this one, 00:17:29.06\00:17:30.72 and these down beneath them. 00:17:30.75\00:17:33.21 And now we can easily see the advantage of that 00:17:33.24\00:17:37.30 flying buttress so they can leave the wall empty 00:17:37.33\00:17:39.77 and fill it with beautiful stain glass. 00:17:39.80\00:17:41.61 This is the west rose window and the one on the opposite side 00:17:41.64\00:17:46.89 is like it, only different in that it tells 00:17:46.92\00:17:49.72 different Bible stories. 00:17:49.75\00:17:51.22 You can imagine the folks being brought here, can't you now. 00:17:51.25\00:17:54.25 And the pastors pointing out this frame and telling them 00:17:54.28\00:17:58.13 the Bible story and explaining the next and the next, 00:17:58.16\00:18:01.51 and right on down the line. 00:18:01.54\00:18:03.10 I was privileged to go inside the treasury. 00:18:03.97\00:18:08.33 You cannot go without armed guards accompanying you 00:18:09.89\00:18:13.83 at any time and rarely can a person go. 00:18:13.86\00:18:16.79 But with special permission and asking in advance 00:18:16.82\00:18:19.51 we were granted the ability, four of us, to go 00:18:19.54\00:18:23.20 inside the treasury. 00:18:23.23\00:18:24.80 And I think there were 4 or 5 armed guards for each of us. 00:18:25.83\00:18:29.53 And so we made quite a group. 00:18:29.56\00:18:31.23 But inside the treasury there are scores, 00:18:31.26\00:18:34.82 ladies and gentlemen, of crucifixes and little 00:18:34.85\00:18:39.77 altars of incense, and other relics that are pure gold. 00:18:39.80\00:18:46.48 Pure solid gold. 00:18:46.51\00:18:49.33 The wealth of the church of Rome is inestimable. 00:18:49.36\00:18:53.27 Really it is. 00:18:53.30\00:18:54.63 The bank of Rome, the Vatican Bank, is I suppose, 00:18:54.66\00:18:58.97 if not the most wealthy bank in all of the world... 00:18:59.00\00:19:01.23 We're going to go again to Rome in a few evenings 00:19:01.26\00:19:03.49 and I may forget so I'll tell you now. 00:19:03.59\00:19:05.37 But, the Vatican owns all of the utilities in the whole 00:19:05.40\00:19:09.90 of the city of Rome. 00:19:09.93\00:19:10.90 All of the lights, all of the water, all of the sewer system, 00:19:10.91\00:19:15.66 all of the gas, and that sort of thing is owned by the church. 00:19:15.69\00:19:20.20 And so it's quite obvious that they have a nice income. 00:19:20.23\00:19:23.95 And we see just a little bit of the evidence of it here. 00:19:23.98\00:19:27.04 Now, we're up atop the cathedral and we're standing beside 00:19:27.07\00:19:32.49 the gargoyle from which Quasimodo fell in the movie. 00:19:32.52\00:19:36.68 My son Troy was with me. He's our youngest. 00:19:38.50\00:19:41.55 And Peggy stayed down at the ground level. 00:19:41.58\00:19:45.66 She was still admiring some of the marble carvings and all. 00:19:45.69\00:19:49.46 But we climbed the staircase and went up and in and 00:19:49.49\00:19:52.32 amongst and through the bells. 00:19:52.35\00:19:53.75 And then we came over beside this gargoyle. 00:19:53.78\00:19:57.13 And we each had a camera with us. 00:19:59.34\00:20:02.07 And I stood up against this gargoyle and I said to my son, 00:20:03.16\00:20:06.74 "Troy, if you don't mind, take my picture. " 00:20:06.77\00:20:10.21 And he picked up his camera and focused and had his 00:20:11.84\00:20:16.74 hand on the trigger. 00:20:16.77\00:20:18.06 And then he put it down. 00:20:19.43\00:20:21.56 And he said, "Dad, what do you plan to do with this picture?" 00:20:23.61\00:20:26.93 And I said, "Well, I don't know for sure. " 00:20:28.49\00:20:31.28 I said, "I suppose it depends a little bit on how it 00:20:31.88\00:20:34.56 turns out and all. " 00:20:34.59\00:20:35.98 Troy said, "You weren't thinking about putting it in your 00:20:36.85\00:20:39.38 travel log, where you?" 00:20:39.41\00:20:40.59 And I said, "Well to be honest, the thought had come 00:20:42.40\00:20:44.86 across my mind alright. " 00:20:44.89\00:20:46.52 "No way," he said. "No picture. " 00:20:47.13\00:20:49.14 "Why," I asked him. 00:20:50.95\00:20:52.19 He said, "Because you're going to confuse the folks. 00:20:53.82\00:20:55.71 That's why. " 00:20:55.74\00:20:56.86 I want to thank you for traveling with me. 00:20:59.01\00:21:01.29 And now to our subject of the evening. 00:21:06.21\00:21:08.24 The Hour of God's Judgment. 00:21:08.27\00:21:09.91 Please open your Bibles to Revelation chapter 14. 00:21:09.94\00:21:13.63 We've alluded to this passage on several prior occasions 00:21:13.66\00:21:16.85 and must begin with it tonight. 00:21:16.88\00:21:18.86 Revelation chapter 14 carries within it those three very 00:21:18.89\00:21:23.52 special messages to the terminal generation 00:21:23.55\00:21:25.80 by the three angels, those three messengers 00:21:25.83\00:21:29.01 sent from God's throne. 00:21:29.04\00:21:30.54 And I'm going to begin to read now at verse 6 00:21:30.57\00:21:33.38 and ask you to follow carefully. 00:21:33.41\00:21:35.09 We'll read verses 6 and 7. 00:21:35.12\00:21:37.23 Revelation chapter 14, beginning with verse 6. 00:21:37.26\00:21:41.17 "I saw then another angel flying in the midst of heaven and he 00:21:41.20\00:21:43.98 had the everlasting gospel to preach to those 00:21:44.01\00:21:46.41 that dwell upon the earth; to every nation and kindred 00:21:46.44\00:21:49.75 and tongue and people. " 00:21:49.78\00:21:51.82 That takes our minds back, doesn't it, to our 00:21:51.85\00:21:54.34 study last night. 00:21:54.37\00:21:55.43 The final command of Jesus from Matthew chapter 28 00:21:55.46\00:21:58.62 where He said to His disciples to go to the whole world 00:21:58.65\00:22:00.87 and take the gospel. 00:22:00.90\00:22:02.79 "And he that believes and is baptized, the same 00:22:02.82\00:22:05.00 shall be saved. " 00:22:05.03\00:22:06.00 And so we see a connection here again tonight. 00:22:06.15\00:22:08.40 This is a message that's to go to the whole world. 00:22:08.43\00:22:11.46 This is the good news about Jesus and about the 00:22:11.49\00:22:13.92 righteousness of God. 00:22:13.95\00:22:15.31 This must be preached to the whole world, 00:22:16.38\00:22:18.59 to every man that dwells upon the earth; 00:22:18.62\00:22:20.16 every nation and kindred and tongue and people. 00:22:20.19\00:22:22.28 And then verse 7, "And He said with a loud voice, 'Fear God. '" 00:22:22.31\00:22:28.08 Now, if you have a newer translation, something different 00:22:28.11\00:22:31.47 from the King James, it very likely says, "Reverence God" 00:22:31.50\00:22:35.26 or "Honor God. " 00:22:35.29\00:22:36.56 It doesn't mean to be afraid God at all, 00:22:36.59\00:22:38.95 but rather to reverence God. 00:22:38.98\00:22:40.96 "Reverence God and give Him glory, for the hour of 00:22:40.99\00:22:45.94 His judgment is come. 00:22:45.97\00:22:48.64 And worship He who made the heaven and the earth 00:22:48.67\00:22:51.09 and the sea and the fountains of water. " 00:22:51.12\00:22:52.85 Now I want you to know that there are two things here 00:22:52.88\00:22:55.35 that go together hand in glove. 00:22:55.38\00:22:57.71 One of them is this special message about the 00:22:57.74\00:23:00.48 judgment hour of God. 00:23:00.51\00:23:01.97 And together with that, really, locked tightly to it is this 00:23:02.00\00:23:06.44 idea of returning to the Creator, 00:23:06.47\00:23:10.63 the worship of the Creator, He who made the heavens 00:23:10.66\00:23:12.84 and the earth and all of the rest. 00:23:12.87\00:23:14.48 You remember when about 3 evenings ago we talked about 00:23:14.51\00:23:17.29 the origin of the Saturday Sabbath and how it was a 00:23:17.32\00:23:21.01 memorial to the creative power of God? 00:23:21.04\00:23:23.13 It was a monument made out of time where a family could 00:23:23.51\00:23:27.02 come together and be reminded down through the ages 00:23:27.05\00:23:29.87 that we're not the result of an accident, from a 00:23:29.90\00:23:32.15 primeval pool, but rather we have come from the 00:23:32.19\00:23:34.41 creative hand of God almighty. 00:23:34.44\00:23:36.53 And so, here then is this special messenger with this 00:23:36.56\00:23:39.33 special message announcing the judgment hour of God 00:23:39.36\00:23:42.38 is begun and turn your minds back toward the 00:23:42.41\00:23:46.33 creatorship of Jesus. 00:23:46.36\00:23:47.78 Remember His day of creation. 00:23:47.98\00:23:49.58 That's implicit within it as well. 00:23:49.61\00:23:51.77 Our message tonight, ladies and gentlemen, 00:23:51.80\00:23:53.74 has been designed really by God to answer a number of questions. 00:23:53.77\00:23:57.88 Questions that I'm asked nearly every week in my ministry. 00:23:57.91\00:24:01.25 Questions like these. 00:24:01.28\00:24:02.78 "Lyle, where did this Saturday business originate? 00:24:03.56\00:24:08.68 I mean, I've been in church all my life and my great granddaddy 00:24:08.71\00:24:12.53 was a preacher and I've never heard much about it 00:24:12.56\00:24:15.64 until fairly lately. 00:24:15.67\00:24:16.99 Why? Why was that? 00:24:17.02\00:24:18.17 Why didn't Martin Luther shout it from the rooftop 00:24:18.20\00:24:20.82 and begin to keep the Saturday Sabbath? 00:24:20.85\00:24:23.19 Why? 00:24:23.22\00:24:24.45 Why is it such a Johnny come lately sort of a notion?" 00:24:24.48\00:24:27.52 And then this second question. 00:24:27.55\00:24:29.40 Where and when and how did the Seventh-day Adventist 00:24:29.43\00:24:33.13 church originate? 00:24:33.16\00:24:34.91 And I'm asked that question more and more often recently 00:24:34.94\00:24:38.25 because the Seventh-day Adventist church today, 00:24:38.28\00:24:40.37 ladies and gentlemen, is the fastest growing 00:24:40.40\00:24:42.41 Protestant church in all of the world. 00:24:42.44\00:24:44.55 And if time allows, we shall say more about that 00:24:44.58\00:24:46.68 before we conclude. 00:24:46.71\00:24:48.45 And so we going to, in our Bibles tonight, find the 00:24:49.63\00:24:52.52 answers to these questions. 00:24:52.55\00:24:53.86 But before we read more from the Revelation, 00:24:53.89\00:24:56.61 let's go back to the Psalms. 00:24:56.64\00:24:57.81 Leave a book mark here at Revelation. 00:24:57.84\00:25:00.24 Turn back to chapter 10 and 11, leave your mark there. 00:25:00.27\00:25:04.48 And then we shall go together to the Psalms. 00:25:04.51\00:25:07.68 I want to read to you a verse from Psalm number 20 00:25:07.71\00:25:10.98 that's very fitting. 00:25:11.01\00:25:11.98 At least in my mind tonight and I think it shall be 00:25:12.00\00:25:14.07 to yours as well. 00:25:14.10\00:25:15.07 Just before the Proverb. 00:25:15.08\00:25:17.82 Job and Psalms and then the Proverbs. 00:25:17.85\00:25:20.27 Chapter 20 verses 1 and 2. 00:25:20.30\00:25:23.53 Psalm number 20 verses 1 and 2. 00:25:24.60\00:25:28.52 Psalm 20 verse 1. 00:25:30.73\00:25:32.19 "May the Lord hear you in the day of trouble, 00:25:34.89\00:25:37.75 and may the name of the Lord God of Jacob defend you. " 00:25:39.11\00:25:42.53 And then this next verse. Listen carefully. 00:25:42.56\00:25:45.70 "And send you help from... " 00:25:45.73\00:25:47.94 Now you tell me what it says in your Bible. 00:25:47.97\00:25:49.79 Send us help from where now? 00:25:49.82\00:25:51.18 There it is, "... send us help from the sanctuary 00:25:51.56\00:25:55.33 and strengthen you out of Zion. " 00:25:55.36\00:25:57.70 Send us help, Lord, from the sanctuary. 00:25:57.73\00:26:00.35 Tonight we're going to study the sanctuary and we're going to 00:26:00.38\00:26:03.81 share together the beauty of its teaching. 00:26:03.84\00:26:06.28 And we're going to see in it the love of God and the great love 00:26:06.31\00:26:10.00 of our Father as well. 00:26:10.03\00:26:11.91 I want you now then to go with me to Revelation chapter 10. 00:26:11.94\00:26:15.81 I'm going to read the entirety of that chapter, and then 00:26:16.82\00:26:18.78 as time allows, several verses from the 11th chapter as well. 00:26:18.81\00:26:22.02 And while we're turning back to Revelation chapter 10, 00:26:22.05\00:26:25.22 let's be reminded, as we have on prior evenings, 00:26:25.25\00:26:28.26 that much of the book of Revelation is symbolic. 00:26:28.29\00:26:30.54 In fact, I think it's safe to say that most of the book 00:26:30.57\00:26:33.60 of Revelation is written in terms of symbols. 00:26:33.63\00:26:37.17 And there was a reason for that, of course. 00:26:37.20\00:26:39.05 The Bible was protected from its enemies who couldn't 00:26:39.08\00:26:42.46 understand the symbolisms, you see. 00:26:42.49\00:26:44.95 So God saved the information, couched the information 00:26:45.46\00:26:48.71 in symbols so that we who live in the last day, 00:26:48.74\00:26:52.21 the terminal generation, could be blessed by the information 00:26:52.24\00:26:55.64 and the Revelation not be destroyed by those who are 00:26:55.67\00:26:59.01 described symbolically in it. 00:26:59.04\00:27:01.49 Alright, chapter 10. Symbolic indeed. 00:27:01.52\00:27:05.14 And we're going to begin with the first verse. 00:27:05.17\00:27:06.84 John in this vision says, "I saw a might angel 00:27:07.30\00:27:09.96 come down from heaven. 00:27:09.99\00:27:11.26 He was clothed with a cloud and he had a rainbow upon his head. 00:27:11.29\00:27:15.21 His face was like the sun and his feet were like 00:27:15.24\00:27:18.72 pillars of fire. 00:27:18.75\00:27:19.99 And he had in his hand a little book that was... " 00:27:20.02\00:27:23.29 Now you tell me what it says. 00:27:23.32\00:27:24.84 What does it tell us about this little book? 00:27:24.87\00:27:26.36 It was open. 00:27:26.94\00:27:27.91 We're going to notice that again and again in this passage. 00:27:27.92\00:27:30.37 And because of the emphasis upon the little book being open, 00:27:30.40\00:27:33.78 we can know that at one time, or some time or another, 00:27:33.81\00:27:36.91 the little book was closed. 00:27:36.94\00:27:38.84 But this angel now has in his hand, 00:27:38.87\00:27:41.04 a little book that is open. 00:27:41.07\00:27:42.78 "The angel put his right foot upon the sea and his 00:27:43.77\00:27:45.60 left upon the earth and he cried with a loud voice 00:27:45.63\00:27:47.57 like when a lion roars. 00:27:47.60\00:27:48.62 And when he cried, the seven thunders began 00:27:48.65\00:27:50.84 to utter their voices. 00:27:50.87\00:27:51.84 And when the seven thunders uttered their voices, 00:27:51.85\00:27:54.23 I was about to write. 00:27:54.26\00:27:56.48 And then I heard a voice from heaven that said, 00:27:59.25\00:28:00.76 'Seal up the things which the seven thunders have uttered 00:28:00.79\00:28:03.32 and do not write them. 00:28:03.35\00:28:04.72 Don't write it John, not yet. ' 00:28:05.70\00:28:07.40 And then the angel that I saw standing upon the sea 00:28:07.43\00:28:11.41 and upon the earth lifted up his hand toward heaven 00:28:11.44\00:28:13.59 and swore by Him who lives forever and ever, 00:28:13.62\00:28:15.37 who created the heavens and the things there in, 00:28:15.40\00:28:17.08 the earth and the things that are there in, 00:28:17.11\00:28:18.14 the sea and the things that are there in, 00:28:18.17\00:28:19.93 that time should be no longer, no more time. 00:28:19.96\00:28:24.56 But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, 00:28:26.96\00:28:29.07 when he begins to sound, the mystery of God would be finished 00:28:29.10\00:28:31.97 as He's declared to His servants the prophets. 00:28:32.00\00:28:34.01 Then the voice that I heard from heaven spoke to me again 00:28:34.40\00:28:37.71 and said, 'Go and take the little book that is now open 00:28:37.74\00:28:40.82 in the hand of the angel, the one that stands 00:28:40.85\00:28:42.68 upon the sea and upon the earth. ' 00:28:42.71\00:28:43.79 And I went to that angel and I said to him, 00:28:43.82\00:28:45.38 'Give me that little book. ' 00:28:45.41\00:28:47.29 And he said, 'Take it and eat it up. 00:28:47.32\00:28:50.97 And it'll be, in your mouth, as sweet as honey 00:28:51.00\00:28:53.91 but it will make your belly bitter. ' 00:28:53.94\00:28:56.19 And so I took the little book from the hand of the angel 00:28:56.22\00:28:58.41 and I did eat it up. 00:28:58.44\00:28:59.49 And it was, in my mouth, as sweet as honey. 00:28:59.52\00:29:02.00 But as soon as I had eaten, my belly was bitter. 00:29:02.03\00:29:06.46 And then he said to me, 'You must prophesy again 00:29:07.55\00:29:12.73 before many nations and tongues and peoples and kings. '" 00:29:12.76\00:29:19.34 Alright, now let's make some basic review here. 00:29:19.37\00:29:22.10 It's fascinating, this symbolic information. 00:29:22.13\00:29:25.09 The whole experience revolves itself, gathers itself 00:29:25.84\00:29:29.18 around this little book. 00:29:29.21\00:29:30.19 And every time we see the angel, we see the book. 00:29:30.22\00:29:32.95 And four time we're told that it is indeed a little book. 00:29:32.98\00:29:35.74 And twice we're told that the book is open. 00:29:35.77\00:29:38.30 And once we're told the nature of the book. 00:29:38.33\00:29:40.42 It is the book of prophesy. 00:29:40.45\00:29:42.25 "Thou must prophesy again. " 00:29:42.28\00:29:45.67 Now this question comes to us, naturally really. 00:29:47.43\00:29:50.88 Where in the stream of time would this prophesy 00:29:51.48\00:29:54.33 regarding the little book find a fulfillment? 00:29:54.36\00:29:57.11 Our very first night together, we said that prophesy 00:29:57.14\00:30:00.57 is history written in advance. 00:30:00.60\00:30:02.21 It's God pulling aside the veil that hides the future 00:30:02.24\00:30:05.31 and giving us a glimpse into what's out there 00:30:05.34\00:30:07.61 so we can make preparation. 00:30:07.64\00:30:09.22 And on the other hand, history is the mirror 00:30:09.25\00:30:11.96 reflection of prophesy. 00:30:11.99\00:30:13.33 It is prophesy fulfilled. 00:30:13.36\00:30:14.75 And prophesy and history go together like identical twins. 00:30:14.78\00:30:19.56 Thus then the question, where in the stream of time 00:30:19.59\00:30:23.82 would this prophesy become history? 00:30:23.85\00:30:26.67 Now we have several clues and we're going to begin 00:30:27.10\00:30:29.86 to look at them right now. 00:30:29.89\00:30:31.98 Clue number 1, for those of you who take notes. 00:30:32.01\00:30:34.51 Clue number 1, as we look at where this prophesy 00:30:34.54\00:30:37.59 finds its fulfillment. 00:30:37.62\00:30:38.89 In the days of the voice of the... 00:30:39.68\00:30:41.95 Which angel? The third? 00:30:41.98\00:30:43.98 The seventh angel, exactly right. 00:30:45.19\00:30:47.36 The seventh angel. 00:30:47.39\00:30:48.77 In all of the Bible, both Old and New Testaments, 00:30:48.80\00:30:50.90 but particularly in the book of Revelation, the number 7 00:30:50.93\00:30:54.35 is a special number. 00:30:54.38\00:30:55.89 It's unique. 00:30:55.92\00:30:57.10 The Sabbath is unique, it's the seventh day of the week. 00:30:57.13\00:30:59.82 And we've said that again and again. 00:30:59.85\00:31:01.51 But here we have the seventh angel. 00:31:01.81\00:31:03.60 Now when, in the Revelation, you come to number 7, 00:31:03.63\00:31:07.71 whether it's the trumpets or the plagues or the churches 00:31:07.74\00:31:10.54 or whatever else, that's the end of it. 00:31:10.57\00:31:12.57 It's over, that's it. That's the finality. 00:31:12.60\00:31:15.38 This, then, is the seventh angel and he's just 00:31:15.41\00:31:19.05 beginning his sounding. 00:31:19.08\00:31:21.02 Moreover, it tells us then that at this time the mystery of God 00:31:21.05\00:31:25.30 should be finished. 00:31:25.33\00:31:26.54 We could ask, what is the mystery of God? 00:31:26.57\00:31:29.04 And we ought to. 00:31:29.07\00:31:30.04 If we had 2 or 3 weeks to put the theology together, 00:31:31.14\00:31:33.61 I'm sure you'd agree with me that the mystery of God 00:31:33.64\00:31:36.88 is the power of the gospel. 00:31:36.91\00:31:39.60 We can't explain it. 00:31:39.63\00:31:40.60 I see it in every meeting and it's miraculous. 00:31:40.62\00:31:43.79 I see it often demonstrated in men, it seems. 00:31:44.30\00:31:47.21 Men who've never had any interest in the things 00:31:47.24\00:31:49.82 of God or Christ. 00:31:49.85\00:31:50.96 Maybe you've never been to church before. 00:31:50.99\00:31:52.87 And they'll come maybe to just one meeting or one 00:31:52.90\00:31:55.08 worship service and they sort of get hooked. 00:31:55.11\00:31:57.37 And they continue to come and the Holy Spirit begins to 00:31:57.40\00:32:00.50 fill their hearts and their minds and their lives. 00:32:00.53\00:32:03.21 And habits that have held them in a vice grip, maybe for years 00:32:03.24\00:32:07.65 and decades, suddenly fall off. 00:32:07.68\00:32:09.91 Tobacco or alcohol or cocaine or whatever else. 00:32:09.94\00:32:13.02 And you can't explain that changed life. 00:32:13.05\00:32:15.02 I've told you how I saw it in my own dad and I'll tell the story 00:32:15.05\00:32:18.37 in detail on another evening. 00:32:18.40\00:32:20.10 It is a mystery. 00:32:20.13\00:32:21.86 The power of the gospel is a mystery. 00:32:21.89\00:32:24.98 Just before Jesus ascended, we must allude again, 00:32:25.69\00:32:28.89 He said to His disciples, "Go into the whole world 00:32:28.92\00:32:31.73 and share this good news, take this power out to the 00:32:31.76\00:32:35.28 ends of the earth. 00:32:35.31\00:32:36.37 And when the job is done, then I will come again. " 00:32:36.40\00:32:40.77 Now this tells us that the gospel has gone 00:32:40.80\00:32:44.17 to nearly the whole earth. 00:32:44.20\00:32:45.83 The mystery of God, the power of the gospel 00:32:45.86\00:32:48.13 is in its final stages of fulfillment. 00:32:48.16\00:32:51.15 The mystery of God is near its finishing touches. 00:32:51.18\00:32:54.78 Now this angel, the seventh, the last, which carries the message 00:32:54.81\00:33:03.16 that the mystery of God is in the final stages of fulfillment, 00:33:03.19\00:33:06.85 also makes a bold statement that time shall be no more. 00:33:06.88\00:33:15.94 We're now ready to step across from time into eternity 00:33:17.44\00:33:20.38 where there are no more alarm clocks. 00:33:20.41\00:33:22.09 How about that? 00:33:22.12\00:33:23.23 And so this is the seventh angel, he's the last one. 00:33:26.03\00:33:28.74 His message is that the gospel has nearly gone to the 00:33:28.77\00:33:31.74 whole world with its miraculous life changing power 00:33:31.77\00:33:35.21 and time shall be no longer. 00:33:35.24\00:33:36.99 It becomes, with these clues, quite obvious I think 00:33:37.02\00:33:40.39 to even the casual observer that the fulfillment of this prophesy 00:33:40.42\00:33:44.11 has to do with the end times, with the last days. 00:33:44.14\00:33:47.62 Now we have alluded, on several evenings prior, to the time 00:33:48.06\00:33:52.96 of the falling of the stars predicted by Joel in chapter 2, 00:33:52.99\00:33:56.42 predicted by Jesus in Matthew chapter 24 and Luke 17 and 21, 00:33:56.45\00:34:02.76 that there would be signs in the sun and the moon and the stars. 00:34:02.79\00:34:05.02 And we talked about how at the turn of the 16th or 17th 00:34:05.05\00:34:10.25 century, right in there, there was the dark day that had been 00:34:10.28\00:34:13.89 been predicted by Joel and then by Jesus. 00:34:13.92\00:34:15.81 Do you remember? 00:34:15.84\00:34:16.81 And the moon was turned to blood, 00:34:16.82\00:34:18.65 and then there was the meteoric shower, 00:34:18.68\00:34:21.44 and then that great earthquake. 00:34:21.47\00:34:23.51 And so we said we believe with good reason, 00:34:23.54\00:34:26.36 with Bible background and historical knowledge, 00:34:26.39\00:34:29.42 that the last days, plural, began about 1780, 00:34:29.45\00:34:34.46 right around in there. 00:34:34.49\00:34:36.38 Now someone might easily say, "Well, boy that's been 00:34:36.41\00:34:38.60 a long time ago. 00:34:38.63\00:34:40.10 I mean here we are, you known, in 2000 plus. 00:34:40.85\00:34:46.17 That's surely been a long time ago. " 00:34:46.20\00:34:47.74 But you know folks, if I were to stretch across this auditorium 00:34:47.77\00:34:51.52 a tape that symbolizes the history of the world 00:34:51.55\00:34:54.91 since the beginning until today, and then I cut off from 00:34:54.94\00:35:00.29 that tape the amount that would represent from 1780 to today. 00:35:00.32\00:35:06.94 You know how much it would be? 00:35:06.97\00:35:08.36 Just about like that. 00:35:08.87\00:35:11.61 And so when you look at the big picture, in the big 00:35:11.64\00:35:14.13 scheme of things, suggesting that the last days began 00:35:14.16\00:35:17.34 about 1780, it's not a stretch at all. 00:35:17.37\00:35:20.98 Now, we're going to summarize once again. 00:35:21.50\00:35:23.75 We're talking about a little book tonight. 00:35:23.78\00:35:25.54 We're talking about a book of prophesy. 00:35:25.57\00:35:27.30 We're about a book that was once closed but is now open. 00:35:27.33\00:35:29.97 It was to be opened at the end of time, at the time of the 00:35:30.00\00:35:32.83 beginning of the sounding of the seventh angel. 00:35:32.86\00:35:34.78 Now my suggestion is that we could begin in Genesis 00:35:34.81\00:35:41.06 and go to Revelation. 00:35:41.09\00:35:42.18 We could do it in the opposite direction, study from 00:35:42.21\00:35:44.90 Revelation to Genesis. 00:35:44.93\00:35:45.90 We could begin right in the middle of our Bibles 00:35:45.91\00:35:49.11 and go both directions. 00:35:49.14\00:35:50.43 And we'll only find one book of all of the 66 that 00:35:50.46\00:35:53.21 make up our Bible that fits the demands of 00:35:53.24\00:35:57.58 Revelation chapter 10. 00:35:57.61\00:35:59.93 Only one book. 00:35:59.96\00:36:01.44 And I think you'll agree with me that it is the little 00:36:01.47\00:36:04.74 Old Testament book of Daniel, of course. 00:36:04.77\00:36:08.94 Many folks refer to Daniel as the Old Testament apocalypse 00:36:08.97\00:36:12.62 or the Old Testament revelation. 00:36:12.65\00:36:14.49 And much of the symbolism, much of the language 00:36:14.52\00:36:17.18 of the New Testament Revelation is borrowed from, 00:36:17.21\00:36:20.29 directly from the Old Testament book of Daniel. 00:36:20.32\00:36:24.07 I'm going to suggest that we turn to Daniel chapter 12, 00:36:24.10\00:36:28.23 you and I together, and we'll notice a verse or two. 00:36:28.26\00:36:33.77 Daniel is writing, ladies and gentlemen, about 560 years 00:36:34.93\00:36:39.37 before the birth of Jesus. 00:36:39.40\00:36:41.25 And he's in Babylonian captivity and he ends every day by 00:36:41.28\00:36:46.22 looking out, on his knees, over toward Jerusalem 00:36:46.25\00:36:49.20 and the Holy Land and praying, "Lord, how long 00:36:49.23\00:36:51.56 until You let us return? 00:36:51.59\00:36:53.05 How long, how long?" 00:36:53.08\00:36:54.95 When he comes to conclude his book, God tells him 00:36:58.16\00:37:02.49 exactly how to sign off. 00:37:02.52\00:37:04.75 And we're going to read that together right now. 00:37:04.78\00:37:08.14 Right now. 00:37:10.13\00:37:11.24 Daniel chapter 12 and verse 4. 00:37:12.63\00:37:15.99 "But thou, Daniel, shut up the words and seal your book... " 00:37:16.97\00:37:22.50 Until when? 00:37:22.53\00:37:24.04 Oh, there it is. 00:37:24.88\00:37:26.36 "Close your book, let it remain closed, let it remain sealed 00:37:26.39\00:37:29.34 until the time of the end. " 00:37:29.37\00:37:30.76 And then it says, "Many shall run to and fro, 00:37:30.79\00:37:32.47 and knowledge shall be increased. " 00:37:32.50\00:37:35.85 Now, ladies and gentlemen, I can't begin to explain to you 00:37:36.37\00:37:40.68 the effect that this verse had upon my mind when first 00:37:40.71\00:37:44.89 it was explained to me. 00:37:44.92\00:37:46.19 I was a young man but the impression was 00:37:47.60\00:37:50.25 deep and is lasting. 00:37:50.28\00:37:51.62 I guarantee you. 00:37:51.69\00:37:52.78 "Let your book remain closed, Daniel. 00:37:53.89\00:37:56.23 But in the end times, there will be an explosion of knowledge 00:37:56.26\00:37:59.83 in technology, and men will be running to and fro. " 00:37:59.86\00:38:02.68 And the explanation was continued by my Bible teacher. 00:38:03.71\00:38:08.03 Imagine in the lifetime of folks who have gone from traveling 00:38:08.06\00:38:15.03 on the back of an animal to seeing jets 00:38:15.06\00:38:17.52 streak across the sky. 00:38:17.55\00:38:19.12 Imagine this explosion of technology. 00:38:19.60\00:38:23.26 I remember so very well in college reading about 00:38:23.29\00:38:27.38 the first computer, the first real working computer. 00:38:27.41\00:38:31.25 And it was somewhere in New York City, they said. 00:38:31.28\00:38:33.91 And I've forgotten how many floors of one big building, 00:38:33.94\00:38:36.37 but they told how much information. 00:38:36.40\00:38:38.23 They said that you could put enough information in that 00:38:38.26\00:38:40.76 computer, it would take nearly all of the books in all the 00:38:40.79\00:38:43.88 libraries of all of the cities and universities 00:38:43.91\00:38:47.01 in the United States. 00:38:47.04\00:38:48.17 Now all that much is in that computer. 00:38:48.20\00:38:50.04 Well, that hasn't been so terribly long ago, folks. 00:38:50.07\00:38:52.59 This isn't the history of civilization I'm sharing 00:38:52.62\00:38:54.49 with you now. 00:38:54.59\00:38:55.56 I mean, it wasn't back in the dark ages when 00:38:55.57\00:38:57.06 Lyle was in college. 00:38:57.09\00:38:58.52 But in one lifetime, you know, we've gone from buggies to 00:39:00.41\00:39:04.95 soft landings on the moon. 00:39:04.98\00:39:06.36 And now, all of that information that took all of those 00:39:06.39\00:39:09.79 floors in that great big building in New York City 00:39:09.82\00:39:12.50 can be compressed into that little computer you put inside 00:39:12.53\00:39:16.00 your watch pocket. 00:39:16.03\00:39:17.15 It is quite remarkable. 00:39:17.18\00:39:18.87 And so when this verse was explained to me, 00:39:18.90\00:39:21.10 the explanation had to do with people leaving vapor trails 00:39:21.13\00:39:25.33 across the sky, you know. 00:39:25.36\00:39:26.90 Jet airplanes here and there. 00:39:26.93\00:39:28.70 Amazing. 00:39:28.73\00:39:30.22 Yea, this explosion of technology. 00:39:30.25\00:39:32.79 So it really locked in, it made a lot of sense. 00:39:32.82\00:39:34.98 Men running to and fro, knowledge is increased. 00:39:35.01\00:39:37.12 I want to say to you all tonight that this is a good application 00:39:37.15\00:39:40.79 of Daniel chapter 12 and verse 4. 00:39:40.82\00:39:43.25 A proper application, but it is a secondary application. 00:39:43.28\00:39:46.55 And many, many Bible prophesies have primary 00:39:46.58\00:39:49.73 and secondary applications. 00:39:49.76\00:39:51.48 Folks then ask, "Well, what is the primary application?" 00:39:51.51\00:39:55.69 Well to answer that, we look for the subject of the verse. 00:39:55.72\00:39:59.89 Daniel chapter 12 verse 4. What is the subject? 00:40:00.39\00:40:03.03 Close the doors on the ship. 00:40:03.06\00:40:05.92 Lock the door on the jet airplane. 00:40:05.95\00:40:09.30 No, close your book Daniel. 00:40:09.33\00:40:14.15 Let your book remain closed until the time of the end. 00:40:14.18\00:40:17.70 And in the time of the end, knowledge will be increased. 00:40:17.73\00:40:20.63 Knowledge about your book. 00:40:20.66\00:40:24.24 Now folks ask rightfully, "How then does it plug in, 00:40:24.89\00:40:28.11 the running to and fro? 00:40:28.14\00:40:29.11 If primarily that isn't men leaving vapor trails 00:40:29.12\00:40:31.58 across the sky, what then does it mean?" 00:40:31.61\00:40:34.71 In the time of Daniel, and for a long time prior and 00:40:35.21\00:40:38.10 a good while afterward, books were not as we have them 00:40:38.13\00:40:42.04 with backs and pages and so forth, but rather they were 00:40:42.07\00:40:45.88 scrolls rolled upon sticks. 00:40:45.91\00:40:48.45 And if we're looking for a passage, say we're looking 00:40:48.90\00:40:51.46 for Daniel chapter 12 verse 4 and we unroll with this hand 00:40:51.49\00:40:55.13 and roll up with this hand. 00:40:55.16\00:40:56.13 Nope, we went by it. And so we do just the reverse. 00:40:56.14\00:40:57.98 It took a real manual dexterity, by the way. 00:40:58.01\00:41:01.41 And when they were doing that, they called it 00:41:01.44\00:41:04.11 running to and fro through their scrolls. 00:41:04.14\00:41:07.85 "Close your book, Daniel. 00:41:08.52\00:41:10.73 Let it remain closed until the end time, the last days. 00:41:10.76\00:41:15.31 And knowledge about your book shall be increased 00:41:15.34\00:41:17.32 as men run to and fro studying through your book. " 00:41:17.35\00:41:22.14 Now it's time for a history lesson. 00:41:22.17\00:41:24.29 About 1780, there came a simultaneous international 00:41:24.32\00:41:27.24 interdenominational and independent revival 00:41:27.27\00:41:29.61 of the study of the book of Daniel. 00:41:29.64\00:41:31.30 And there was one chapter, and one verse within that chapter, 00:41:31.33\00:41:35.74 that grabbed the minds of these scholars and 00:41:35.77\00:41:39.17 would not let them go. 00:41:39.20\00:41:40.74 And so we're going to go now, you and I, back to 00:41:40.77\00:41:43.65 chapter 8 of Daniel. 00:41:43.68\00:41:45.07 And we're going to notice in a moment verse 14. 00:41:45.10\00:41:48.87 Daniel chapter 8. 00:41:48.90\00:41:50.57 And while you're turning, just let me give you again 00:41:50.60\00:41:53.28 this idea because it is very important. 00:41:53.31\00:41:55.31 These men were arriving at the same conclusions 00:41:55.34\00:41:59.14 without collaboration. 00:41:59.17\00:42:00.59 There was no internet hookup. There was no email. 00:42:00.62\00:42:04.33 There were no cell phones. 00:42:04.36\00:42:05.94 It was impossible even to get a letter from 00:42:05.97\00:42:09.13 this continent to that in less than months. 00:42:09.16\00:42:11.88 And so, here are these men; one in South America, 00:42:12.34\00:42:15.34 one for sure we know about, several here on this 00:42:15.37\00:42:18.71 North American continent, many over on the continent of Europe, 00:42:18.74\00:42:23.68 and one out in the Middle East. 00:42:23.71\00:42:25.11 And they were studying Daniel and arrived at the very same 00:42:25.14\00:42:28.09 conclusions regarding this passage we're now going to read. 00:42:28.12\00:42:31.30 Chapter 8 and verse 14. 00:42:31.33\00:42:33.47 Here is the verse that really grabbed them 00:42:33.50\00:42:35.96 and wouldn't let them go. 00:42:35.99\00:42:37.09 "He said unto me, 'Unto two thousand and three hundred days, 00:42:37.12\00:42:40.09 then shall the sanctuary be cleansed. '" 00:42:40.12\00:42:43.44 And perhaps your Bible says, "Then shall the sanctuary 00:42:43.47\00:42:45.78 be restored to its rightful place. " 00:42:45.81\00:42:47.68 Now these men universally jumped to the conclusion that 00:42:48.79\00:42:54.34 the sanctuary here spoken of was planet earth. 00:42:54.37\00:42:57.53 And that the cleansing here spoken of was the final fire. 00:42:57.56\00:43:00.90 And so they said, "If we could only discover when this 2300 day 00:43:00.93\00:43:06.48 period begins, then we'll know when Jesus will come back. " 00:43:06.51\00:43:09.05 And they intensified their search and the answer 00:43:09.08\00:43:12.37 to their question as to when this prophesy began 00:43:12.40\00:43:14.86 was to be found in the study of chapter 9. 00:43:14.89\00:43:17.89 So we'll go there and we shall read only just verse 25 00:43:17.92\00:43:21.39 for want of time. 00:43:21.42\00:43:22.40 Daniel chapter 9 verse 25. 00:43:22.43\00:43:24.64 "Know therefore and understand, that from the time of the 00:43:25.52\00:43:27.54 going forth of the command to restore and rebuild Jerusalem. " 00:43:27.57\00:43:29.89 There it was, ladies and gentlemen. 00:43:29.92\00:43:31.48 There was the event that triggered, initiated, 00:43:31.51\00:43:35.80 this 2300 day prophesy. 00:43:35.83\00:43:40.10 The longest of all of the time prophesies in the Bible. 00:43:40.13\00:43:42.60 Now, these Bible scholars, moreover, knew that 00:43:42.63\00:43:46.32 when you're studying a passage that is clearly prophetic 00:43:46.35\00:43:49.51 and it mentions a day, you interpret that to mean 00:43:49.54\00:43:53.77 a literal year. 00:43:53.80\00:43:56.01 A day for a year. 00:43:56.04\00:43:57.37 Numbers chapter 14, Ezekiel chapter 4 and verse 6. 00:43:57.40\00:44:00.71 We've mentioned that before. 00:44:00.74\00:44:01.99 Numbers 14, Ezekiel 4:6. 00:44:02.02\00:44:03.55 "I have given you a day for a year. " 00:44:03.58\00:44:05.33 And so these men said, "Look, we're not talking about 00:44:05.36\00:44:08.55 2300 literal days but 2300 literal years. 00:44:08.58\00:44:11.76 And it tells us that this 2300 year period will begin 00:44:11.79\00:44:16.06 at the time of the command that allows Jews to go back and 00:44:16.09\00:44:19.05 restore and rebuild Jerusalem. " 00:44:19.08\00:44:20.31 And so they did what we do here every night. 00:44:20.34\00:44:23.78 They put together, with the prophesy, history. 00:44:23.81\00:44:26.30 And they discovered that 457 years before the birth of Jesus 00:44:26.33\00:44:33.02 there was a command given by a guy by the name of Artaxerxes 00:44:33.05\00:44:36.31 that allowed the children of God to go back from captivity, 00:44:36.34\00:44:41.30 back to Jerusalem, and not only patch up the potholes but 00:44:41.33\00:44:44.04 to restore and rebuild the temple and the whole place. 00:44:44.07\00:44:47.17 Now, without the aid of calculators or modern math, 00:44:47.20\00:44:51.41 these men added 2300 years to 457 before Christ, 00:44:51.44\00:44:56.59 and they came to the startling notion that Jesus would 00:44:56.62\00:45:00.38 come back to cleanse the earth about 1843 or 1844, 00:45:00.41\00:45:05.35 some time right in there. 00:45:05.38\00:45:07.46 And this idea, folk, lit the fuse to the greatest 00:45:07.49\00:45:11.52 religious revival the world had known, I think, since the 00:45:11.55\00:45:13.63 time of Luther and Calvin. 00:45:13.66\00:45:15.20 I mean it really changed the Christian world and 00:45:15.23\00:45:18.93 caused a lot of non-Christians to become Christian 00:45:18.96\00:45:21.38 as far as that goes. 00:45:21.41\00:45:22.96 Now your question ought be, and I'm sure it is in many minds, 00:45:24.52\00:45:31.73 "Who, in the United States, were these preachers 00:45:31.76\00:45:35.02 who believed that Jesus would be back about 1843 or 1844?" 00:45:35.05\00:45:39.27 Well, there were several. 00:45:39.30\00:45:41.41 Chief among them in the United States was a man by the 00:45:42.23\00:45:45.25 name of William Miller. 00:45:45.28\00:45:46.66 William Miller, like his grandfather before him, 00:45:47.22\00:45:49.87 was a Baptist pastor. 00:45:49.90\00:45:51.75 He'd, by the way, been decorated as a very brave and loyal 00:45:51.78\00:45:56.49 soldier at the war of 1812, the Battle of Lake Champlain. 00:45:56.52\00:46:01.11 And it was after that experience that he went back and began 00:46:01.14\00:46:05.06 to carefully study the Bible. 00:46:05.09\00:46:06.17 He'd seen so many horrors in war and he wanted to 00:46:06.20\00:46:08.65 get nearer to God. 00:46:08.68\00:46:09.80 And so William Miller, this Baptist preacher, 00:46:09.83\00:46:12.61 came to this idea that Jesus was going to be back 00:46:12.64\00:46:15.18 about 1843 or 1844. 00:46:15.21\00:46:18.53 Now by early 1843, by late 1842, 00:46:20.87\00:46:29.90 these Bible scholars here in the United States, 00:46:29.93\00:46:33.19 and elsewhere for that matter, had arrived at a precise date. 00:46:33.23\00:46:37.31 Not only just a generality of somewhere between 00:46:37.34\00:46:39.97 1843 or 1844, but a precise date. 00:46:40.00\00:46:43.37 "The sanctuary shall be cleansed. " 00:46:44.00\00:46:46.50 Type will follow antitype. 00:46:46.53\00:46:48.55 And so they began to study this sanctuary system. 00:46:49.25\00:46:51.66 You remember, God took Moses up into a mountain 00:46:51.69\00:46:54.31 and gave him a vision of the sanctuary in heaven. 00:46:54.34\00:46:57.29 And then He said, "Go back down and build one just like that. " 00:46:57.32\00:47:00.27 And He told him of the services that went along with it. 00:47:00.30\00:47:03.59 He said, "Every evening, bring a little animal and 00:47:03.62\00:47:05.78 take that little animals life and spill the blood there 00:47:05.81\00:47:08.46 on the altar of sacrifice. " 00:47:08.49\00:47:10.39 And now, symbolically, the sins of the people are collecting 00:47:10.42\00:47:13.45 inside the Most Holy Place. 00:47:13.48\00:47:15.22 But once a year, a special animal is sacrificed, 00:47:15.25\00:47:18.21 special blood is spilled. 00:47:18.24\00:47:19.27 And this blood is taken inside the Most Holy Place, 00:47:19.30\00:47:23.66 and there it is sprinkled upon the altar of the 00:47:23.69\00:47:27.76 ten commandment law, the Ark of the Covenant. 00:47:27.80\00:47:30.84 And when that happened, then the sanctuary was cleansed 00:47:32.61\00:47:35.75 of the sins of the people for the past year. 00:47:35.78\00:47:39.05 And that became known as the day of atonement, at-one-ment, 00:47:39.08\00:47:44.01 when the people were brought back into oneness with God. 00:47:44.04\00:47:47.36 Now in our calendar, that day of atonement happens 00:47:47.39\00:47:52.31 on October 22. 00:47:52.34\00:47:53.80 And so, these Bible scholars and students said, 00:47:53.83\00:47:57.10 "Hey, Jesus is coming back not, generally between 1843 and 1844, 00:47:57.13\00:48:01.44 but on October 22nd of 1844. 00:48:01.47\00:48:05.59 That's when He'll be back with the cleansing fire. " 00:48:05.62\00:48:08.61 The preaching of this idea, ladies and gentlemen, 00:48:10.73\00:48:12.66 had the result of dividing every congregation right 00:48:12.69\00:48:16.41 down the center aisle. 00:48:16.44\00:48:17.66 Let's suppose that the year is 1843 and this is a 00:48:18.59\00:48:22.67 Methodist congregation. 00:48:22.70\00:48:24.15 And a brother over here asks one over here, "Tell me sir, 00:48:24.18\00:48:26.68 are you and Adventist or are you not?" 00:48:26.71\00:48:28.82 Now what is he asking? 00:48:30.23\00:48:31.34 He's asking simply, "Do you believe that Jesus is going to 00:48:31.37\00:48:34.27 be back on October 22nd of next year, or do you disbelieve it?" 00:48:34.30\00:48:37.75 The point I want to make now is that there were 00:48:37.78\00:48:41.00 Adventist Baptist, there were Adventist Methodists, 00:48:41.03\00:48:44.15 there were Adventist Episcopalians, 00:48:44.18\00:48:45.52 Adventist Catholics, Adventist Presbyterians, 00:48:45.55\00:48:47.54 Adventist Quakers, Adventist everybody. 00:48:47.57\00:48:50.31 Time to time, when I'm introduced as a 00:48:51.74\00:48:53.30 Seventh-day Adventist minister, someone will kind of smile 00:48:53.33\00:48:55.83 and say, "Oh I read about you on the internet. 00:48:55.86\00:48:58.11 You're the ones who said Jesus was coming back in 1844. 00:48:58.14\00:49:03.19 I read all about you. " 00:49:03.22\00:49:04.98 And when they say that to me, sometimes I respond like this. 00:49:07.37\00:49:12.55 "What kind of limousine did Abraham Lincoln 00:49:12.58\00:49:16.15 prefer to ride in? 00:49:16.18\00:49:17.35 What was his choice? 00:49:17.38\00:49:18.36 Lincoln town car or Cadillac, huh? 00:49:18.39\00:49:21.30 Which did he prefer?" 00:49:21.33\00:49:22.69 "Oh that's a silly question. 00:49:22.72\00:49:24.75 He had no preference for there were no automobiles. " 00:49:24.78\00:49:27.92 Seventh-Day Adventists never said Jesus was 00:49:28.82\00:49:31.09 coming back in 1844. 00:49:31.12\00:49:33.54 For there were no Seventh-Day Adventists until 1863. 00:49:33.57\00:49:37.22 But there were lots of wonderfully dedicated 00:49:37.69\00:49:40.29 Christian folks who believed it and were teaching it 00:49:40.32\00:49:43.88 and sharing it; 00:49:43.91\00:49:45.11 that the hour of God's judgment was soon to come. 00:49:46.80\00:49:51.05 Now if you know anything at all about Seventh-Day Adventists, 00:49:52.25\00:49:54.37 you know that we lay a great deal of importance upon 00:49:54.40\00:49:59.02 the heavenly sanctuary. 00:49:59.05\00:50:01.51 And it's not because, "I think it's a good idea," 00:50:04.55\00:50:06.96 or "some little lady said that it was important. " 00:50:06.99\00:50:09.06 It's because God said it. 00:50:09.09\00:50:11.69 I want you to go with me now to chapter 11. 00:50:11.72\00:50:15.78 And while you're turning to chapter 11 of 00:50:16.44\00:50:18.11 Revelation, by the way, not Daniel. 00:50:18.14\00:50:19.83 Revelation again. 00:50:19.86\00:50:21.26 While you're turning there with me, let me just give you 00:50:21.29\00:50:25.26 a little bit of the background now. 00:50:25.29\00:50:26.92 These followers of William Miller and a score of others, 00:50:31.27\00:50:36.48 by early 1844 began to liquidate. 00:50:38.75\00:50:43.29 I mean, the farmers sold out. 00:50:43.32\00:50:44.84 And the business folks liquidated their stock. 00:50:46.10\00:50:49.05 And as it got nearer and nearer to October 22nd, 00:50:49.08\00:50:51.73 they gave their things away. 00:50:51.76\00:50:54.32 And they encouraged everyone to do the same, do likewise. 00:50:55.37\00:50:58.25 Give away your food, cash in, bring your money. 00:50:58.28\00:51:02.00 Help us to print a little tract so the we can encourage 00:51:02.03\00:51:04.44 everybody in town to do likewise. 00:51:04.47\00:51:06.38 And there were camp meetings that required in New York state, 00:51:07.42\00:51:10.69 a special train to take the folks out to hear 00:51:10.72\00:51:13.10 that Jesus was coming back on October 22nd of 1844. 00:51:13.13\00:51:16.44 This wasn't something done in some dark corner 00:51:16.47\00:51:19.22 by a bunch of lunatics. 00:51:19.25\00:51:20.71 This happened on a very broad base. 00:51:20.74\00:51:23.25 1844 was the year of the General Election. 00:51:23.28\00:51:25.72 By the way, aren't you about tired of the politics? 00:51:25.92\00:51:27.96 I mean, months and months yet to go. 00:51:28.67\00:51:31.42 I've had it, you know. 00:51:31.45\00:51:33.43 It's almost to a point where I don't care. 00:51:34.13\00:51:36.27 Well, equal space was given in the city newspaper 00:51:38.31\00:51:43.15 to the idea that Jesus would be back on October 22nd of '44 00:51:43.18\00:51:47.07 as was given to the General Election. 00:51:47.10\00:51:49.22 And the two men who ran for the high office that year 00:51:49.25\00:51:51.87 were Mr. Clay, a gentleman from Kentucky, and James Polk 00:51:51.90\00:51:55.16 who became the President of the United States, of course. 00:51:55.19\00:51:57.66 Now, Jesus did not come on October 22nd. 00:51:58.18\00:52:01.28 And they were bitterly terribly disappointed. 00:52:01.31\00:52:03.66 But the prophesy from Revelation 10 said it would be like that. 00:52:03.69\00:52:07.63 "In your mouth it will be sweet as honey. " 00:52:07.66\00:52:09.19 You know, my dears, there is nothing in the world, I think, 00:52:09.22\00:52:11.31 sweeter to the born again than the thought that 00:52:11.34\00:52:13.75 Jesus is coming back. 00:52:13.78\00:52:15.41 Now, the key to the understanding of the 00:52:16.17\00:52:18.23 disappointment was to be found in the studying of chapter 11. 00:52:18.26\00:52:22.68 And so we go there to read the very first verse. 00:52:22.71\00:52:25.29 John is in this vision now and he's seen about this book 00:52:25.69\00:52:30.26 and the angel and all. 00:52:30.29\00:52:31.68 Now chapter 11 verse 1. 00:52:31.71\00:52:33.25 "There was given unto me, a reed like unto a rod. 00:52:33.28\00:52:35.54 And the angel said, 'Get up and measure the temple of God 00:52:35.57\00:52:38.46 and the altar and those that worship inside. '" 00:52:38.49\00:52:40.92 Now this thing was so real to John that he was on his back, 00:52:41.52\00:52:44.72 he was prostrate. 00:52:44.75\00:52:45.93 He was down on his back. 00:52:46.56\00:52:49.01 And the angel said, "Get up John, now get up. 00:52:50.02\00:52:51.93 Rise and measure. " 00:52:53.71\00:52:55.87 And if we were to put this into modern language, we would say, 00:52:56.25\00:52:58.63 here's an angel who comes to John the Revelator and says, 00:52:58.66\00:53:01.41 "Here John, take this Stanley Steel tape measure 00:53:01.44\00:53:04.45 and measure the temple of God. " 00:53:04.48\00:53:06.25 Now if I were to take a tape measure and measure this 00:53:06.28\00:53:08.57 lectern, it's this wide and it's this high. 00:53:08.60\00:53:10.93 Will it hold my Bible and my notes and a book or two? 00:53:11.03\00:53:14.02 Will it? Will it suffice? 00:53:14.05\00:53:15.21 I'm studying, I'm measuring. 00:53:15.24\00:53:16.84 You see? 00:53:17.50\00:53:18.47 "Get up John, measure the temple. 00:53:18.49\00:53:20.56 Study the temple of God and the altar and all that goes on. " 00:53:20.59\00:53:24.33 I'm going to ask you, ladies and gentlemen, in your minds now 00:53:27.32\00:53:29.64 as we move toward a conclusion, to go with me 00:53:29.67\00:53:32.62 to the temple of God. 00:53:32.65\00:53:34.26 It was divided, as Moses carefully noted, 00:53:38.80\00:53:42.05 into two compartments; Holy and Most Holy. 00:53:42.08\00:53:45.07 Sanctum and Sanctum Sanctorum. 00:53:45.10\00:53:47.46 And you step into the Holy Place and the only light 00:53:48.40\00:53:51.81 is that which comes from a candelabrum over here. 00:53:51.84\00:53:53.87 It has a central stem with three branches on either side. 00:53:53.90\00:53:56.47 For a total of how many? 00:53:56.50\00:53:57.87 There it is again. 00:53:57.90\00:53:59.40 Seven, that perfect number. 00:53:59.43\00:54:01.12 Now everything in here has to teach us something about 00:54:02.18\00:54:05.43 the life, the atonement, the death, the ministry, 00:54:05.46\00:54:08.18 the resurrection of our Lord Jesus. 00:54:08.21\00:54:09.89 We're measuring and we're studying. 00:54:09.92\00:54:11.43 And when we see the candelabrum, we remember that when Jesus 00:54:11.46\00:54:14.41 came, he said, "I am the light of the world. " 00:54:14.44\00:54:18.54 We're measuring and studying. 00:54:18.94\00:54:20.28 Now over against this wall, there is a long and low table 00:54:20.31\00:54:22.88 atop which there are two stacks of bread. 00:54:22.91\00:54:25.04 Six in each stack for a total of twelve. 00:54:25.07\00:54:27.39 And remember that when Jesus came, he said, 00:54:27.42\00:54:28.93 "I am bread of life. " 00:54:28.96\00:54:31.07 We're measuring and studying. 00:54:31.10\00:54:32.14 And now there's only one object left in this Holy Place. 00:54:32.17\00:54:35.15 And that is the altar of incense. 00:54:35.18\00:54:36.90 Incense continuously burns there and wafts over 00:54:37.62\00:54:40.39 into the Most Holy Place. 00:54:40.42\00:54:41.96 And the incense that burns there, says the apostle Paul, 00:54:43.01\00:54:45.94 symbolizes the life of Jesus. 00:54:45.97\00:54:48.45 Paul said His life is a sweet smelling savor. 00:54:48.48\00:54:53.01 And that, by the way, is why we always end our prayer 00:54:53.04\00:54:55.92 in who's name? 00:54:55.95\00:54:56.92 In Jesus' name. 00:54:56.93\00:54:58.55 Amen. 00:54:58.58\00:54:59.62 And that makes them acceptable into the throne room of God. 00:54:59.65\00:55:02.49 So we're measuring and we're studying. 00:55:02.52\00:55:04.40 Now we part the curtain and step into the Holy of Holies 00:55:04.43\00:55:07.54 and there's only one article of furniture. 00:55:07.57\00:55:09.03 And that's a great golden chest. 00:55:09.06\00:55:11.22 And no ark is important in it's own right, but rather becomes 00:55:11.25\00:55:14.05 important for what it contains. 00:55:14.08\00:55:15.61 And so we lift the lid and roll it back. 00:55:15.64\00:55:17.59 And inside we see the 10 commandment law of God. 00:55:17.62\00:55:21.59 There it is. 00:55:22.33\00:55:23.30 And we read down through, "I'm the Lord thy God 00:55:23.31\00:55:24.93 that has taken thee by the hand to lead thee out of Egypt. 00:55:24.96\00:55:26.56 Therefore, thou shall have no other gods before me. 00:55:26.59\00:55:28.96 Thou shall not make unto thee any graven images 00:55:28.99\00:55:30.73 the likes of anything in the heaven, the earth, the water 00:55:30.76\00:55:33.29 beneath the earth. 00:55:33.32\00:55:34.54 Thou shall not bow down before them. 00:55:34.57\00:55:35.87 Thou shall not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. 00:55:35.90\00:55:38.32 Remember the... " 00:55:38.35\00:55:40.10 What? 00:55:40.13\00:55:41.25 Which day? 00:55:41.85\00:55:42.94 "Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. 00:55:43.86\00:55:46.55 Six days to labor, but the seventh day is the Sabbath 00:55:46.58\00:55:49.31 of the Lord thy God. " 00:55:49.34\00:55:50.68 What happened on October the 22nd of 1844? 00:55:50.71\00:55:53.72 Instead of Jesus coming back, I believe, and many theologians 00:55:53.75\00:55:57.87 with minds far brighter than mine also believe 00:55:57.90\00:56:00.55 that Jesus, according to the type, stepped inside the 00:56:00.58\00:56:04.68 Holy of Holies and began His great High Priestly ministry 00:56:04.71\00:56:07.84 for His children. 00:56:07.87\00:56:08.84 The hour of God's judgment began on that day. 00:56:08.85\00:56:12.87 And it has nothing to do with being condemned 00:56:12.90\00:56:16.51 or being put down. 00:56:16.54\00:56:18.84 This is to vindicate the character of God, you see. 00:56:18.87\00:56:22.07 God is on trial. 00:56:22.89\00:56:24.49 We don't know when our names come up, but all who claim Jesus 00:56:24.89\00:56:27.59 have their name come up in this trial, in this 00:56:27.62\00:56:30.16 great courtroom scene. 00:56:30.19\00:56:31.95 The question of the universe is, "Is Lyle safe to save? 00:56:33.15\00:56:36.52 God, you surely don't want to take him into Your 00:56:37.45\00:56:39.17 eternal kingdom and run the risk that sin's infection is 00:56:39.20\00:56:42.04 going to break out again. 00:56:42.07\00:56:43.54 Surely You have better sense than that. 00:56:44.62\00:56:46.38 God, are You going to save him?" 00:56:46.96\00:56:48.26 And now God is on trial. 00:56:48.29\00:56:50.68 Revelation chapter 12 speaks about our enemy and calls him 00:56:50.71\00:56:53.43 the accuser of the brethren. 00:56:53.46\00:56:56.26 Now in this courtroom, all the Christians have an Attorney. 00:56:58.01\00:57:02.71 He's not only their Attorney, He is their Judge. 00:57:03.21\00:57:06.22 His name is Jesus Christ, the Righteous. 00:57:06.25\00:57:08.54 And when the devil, though he's not there in person, 00:57:08.57\00:57:10.59 he shouts across the universe, "God, you can't save 00:57:10.62\00:57:13.81 Lyle and destroy me. 00:57:13.84\00:57:14.96 He's a sinner, surely. " 00:57:14.99\00:57:15.96 And now I'm in big trouble. 00:57:15.97\00:57:17.57 And now my Attorney... I don't even have to be there. 00:57:17.60\00:57:20.65 My Attorney is there for me. 00:57:20.68\00:57:22.82 The final judgment has been rigged in my favor. 00:57:24.23\00:57:27.49 Praise Jesus. 00:57:29.24\00:57:30.77 And my Attorney stands up. 00:57:36.60\00:57:38.10 And He says, "Father, Lyle is safe to save. 00:57:39.39\00:57:41.90 He has claimed My blood, 00:57:42.67\00:57:44.43 My righteousness. " 00:57:44.90\00:57:46.25 And now, God is vindicated. 00:57:48.96\00:57:52.75 Ah, thank You Jesus. 00:57:54.35\00:57:55.83 You're our High Priest, 00:57:59.41\00:58:00.74 You're our Attorney, 00:58:02.80\00:58:04.28 our Lawyer and our Judge. 00:58:05.77\00:58:07.84 And we don't even have to go to the city hall, 00:58:09.33\00:58:11.16 we don't even have to go to the courtroom. 00:58:11.19\00:58:13.56 For You fixed it all in our favor. 00:58:15.24\00:58:17.44 We don't deserve it. 00:58:18.42\00:58:19.76 But we, tonight, again thank You in Jesus' name. Amen. 00:58:22.16\00:58:26.66
