It's time for us to travel, you fasten your seatbelts now. 00:01:00.61\00:01:03.32 This evening, we're going to go to Pompeii. 00:01:03.82\00:01:07.39 We're going to ride the train from the city of Rome 00:01:07.93\00:01:12.68 to the south, down to the Bay of Naples. 00:01:12.71\00:01:17.37 And there, we're going to disembark 00:01:17.40\00:01:19.97 and walk among the ruins of the ancient city of Pompeii. 00:01:20.00\00:01:24.72 It's only barely an outline now, barely to be seen. 00:01:24.75\00:01:28.50 There about 12 miles north, it is. 00:01:28.53\00:01:31.26 The shadow of what's left of Mount Vesuvius. 00:01:31.29\00:01:35.80 In 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius, after giving several warning blasts, 00:01:35.83\00:01:43.28 exploded with a terrific explosion that almost 00:01:43.31\00:01:48.16 instantly darkened the sun. 00:01:48.19\00:01:50.55 Now, there had been sufficient warning. 00:01:50.58\00:01:52.78 For days and days, it had been puffing and blowing, 00:01:52.81\00:01:56.37 and threatening. 00:01:56.40\00:01:58.70 It had, on one occasion prior, sent out such a plume that 00:01:58.73\00:02:03.23 folks decided it was time to "get out of Dodge," 00:02:03.26\00:02:06.85 as the saying goes. 00:02:06.88\00:02:08.22 So, many of them went down to the Bay of Naples, 00:02:08.25\00:02:12.01 got in their boats and pushed off with sufficient supplies 00:02:12.21\00:02:17.09 to last a day or two or more. 00:02:17.12\00:02:20.71 And then the majority of them decided to come back. 00:02:20.74\00:02:24.80 And they paid the price too great. 00:02:24.83\00:02:28.26 In 79 AD, the mountain exploded suddenly, instantly. 00:02:28.29\00:02:32.85 And it buried this city, which we believe to have been about 00:02:32.88\00:02:36.25 25,000-30,000 in population, 00:02:36.28\00:02:39.60 and also the sister city of Herculaneum, 00:02:39.63\00:02:42.67 between 18-22 feet of ash, lapilli, which is a little 00:02:42.70\00:02:49.59 BB like substance, and just dirt and junk. 00:02:49.62\00:02:54.04 The city then, became much like a time capsule. 00:02:55.87\00:02:59.37 It was as if someone had put several things 00:02:59.77\00:03:03.26 inside a container and then put a seal upon 00:03:03.29\00:03:07.73 the lid of the container, and buried it, 00:03:07.76\00:03:10.12 and left it there for hundreds of years. 00:03:10.15\00:03:13.81 Hundreds of years did go by. 00:03:13.84\00:03:16.13 In 1745, a man by the name of Charles of Bourbon 00:03:16.16\00:03:21.12 was digging a canal, from the snow melt of Mount Vesuvius 00:03:21.15\00:03:25.67 to the north, down to the Bay of Naples 00:03:25.70\00:03:28.95 in order that folks could live there on those pure white sand 00:03:28.98\00:03:32.86 beaches and there overlooking the beautiful blue water. 00:03:32.89\00:03:36.71 So they could live there and have fresh water to drink. 00:03:36.74\00:03:40.32 And as he dug, he came to a well. 00:03:40.42\00:03:44.55 And he looked down with a light inside the well. 00:03:45.99\00:03:48.67 And he saw down there, a street and a sidewalk. 00:03:48.70\00:03:54.00 What had obviously happened was that sometime prior, 00:03:54.03\00:03:57.35 who knows how long before, someone had decided 00:03:57.38\00:04:00.23 to look for fresh water by the digging of a well 00:04:00.26\00:04:02.86 and broke through into the burial ground 00:04:02.89\00:04:06.59 of the city of Pompeii. 00:04:06.62\00:04:08.74 But they didn't seem to pay much attention to it. 00:04:08.77\00:04:11.31 Charles of Bourbon, however, put men with torches down inside. 00:04:11.34\00:04:16.20 And then the announcement was made around the world, 00:04:16.23\00:04:18.72 "We have found a buried city. " 00:04:18.75\00:04:21.04 Excavations then began that continue to this very day. 00:04:21.07\00:04:26.16 And it is so fascinating, in that, here we have a whole 00:04:26.19\00:04:29.81 society that was encapsulated almost instantly. 00:04:30.01\00:04:34.06 We're able now, to know how they lived, 00:04:34.09\00:04:37.23 in what style they lived, how their homes were furnished. 00:04:37.26\00:04:40.72 In many cases, what their morals were or were not. 00:04:40.75\00:04:44.26 And did they have pets and what all happened. 00:04:44.29\00:04:47.21 What kind of things did they eat. 00:04:47.24\00:04:48.78 It was all to be discovered when they lifted the lid 00:04:48.81\00:04:53.10 on the city of Pompeii. 00:04:53.13\00:04:54.81 So let's begin to lift the lid tonight, you and I, shall we. 00:04:54.84\00:04:58.16 We're going to walk down some of these streets. 00:04:59.12\00:05:01.02 By the way, I think you can notice here, 00:05:01.05\00:05:02.96 and maybe even better here, yes. 00:05:02.99\00:05:05.10 Here are the pillars. 00:05:05.13\00:05:07.62 And on each of those pillars, there is a number. 00:05:07.65\00:05:11.11 This one happens to be 16. 00:05:11.14\00:05:12.66 And 17 and 18 over on the opposite side. 00:05:12.69\00:05:15.60 In the museum, there is a big book with a number 00:05:16.27\00:05:20.57 that coordinates to this. 00:05:20.60\00:05:22.07 And it tells what kinds of businesses were operated 00:05:22.10\00:05:25.39 on the insides of these buildings. 00:05:25.42\00:05:27.47 And in many cases, it tells what kinds, the names rather, 00:05:27.50\00:05:31.92 of the folks who owned and operated the business. 00:05:31.95\00:05:34.23 And we're going to see the evidence of all of that 00:05:34.26\00:05:36.46 in just a little bit. 00:05:36.49\00:05:37.86 For your interest sake, this is akin to going to 00:05:37.89\00:05:43.03 the Columbia Center Mall. 00:05:43.06\00:05:45.09 There's a good illustration. 00:05:45.12\00:05:46.58 This is the mall of the ancient city of Pompeii. 00:05:46.61\00:05:50.65 I want you to notice this street. 00:05:51.54\00:05:53.97 This is main street. 00:05:54.00\00:05:55.89 And the other street that we just looked at, 00:05:55.92\00:05:57.83 well maybe we'll back up one. 00:05:57.86\00:05:59.75 Here you see that we have my buddy standing with one foot 00:05:59.78\00:06:03.64 on one side of the sidewalk and then his other 00:06:03.67\00:06:06.26 foot is on the rock. 00:06:06.29\00:06:07.70 And from here, I'll have you notice two or three 00:06:07.73\00:06:09.67 other things, if I may. 00:06:09.70\00:06:11.38 Firstly, I want you to notice again over and around 00:06:11.41\00:06:14.04 these pillars, look over here to the extreme left. 00:06:14.07\00:06:16.59 Here's the best way to see it. Right there. 00:06:16.62\00:06:19.35 Between the two pillars, there is a niche. 00:06:19.38\00:06:21.89 There is a groove carved in the stone. 00:06:21.92\00:06:24.92 That, ladies and gentlemen, is where the doors, 00:06:24.95\00:06:28.83 the sliding doors slid in the groove. 00:06:28.86\00:06:31.59 They were opened in the morning and slid shut at night. 00:06:31.62\00:06:35.01 And so, in our patio's still today, we have sliding doors. 00:06:35.04\00:06:39.77 They let us outside of our master bedrooms. 00:06:39.80\00:06:42.26 Sliding doors originated here in and around Pompeii. 00:06:42.29\00:06:46.13 And certainly from the Roman world. 00:06:46.16\00:06:47.88 And then you'll notice another thing or two. 00:06:47.91\00:06:50.49 You see the street that is lower than the sidewalk. 00:06:50.52\00:06:55.59 And there's a curb that separate it. 00:06:55.62\00:06:57.83 And that was for the purpose of safety and cleanliness. 00:06:57.86\00:07:01.74 You didn't want the folks walking down in the streets 00:07:01.77\00:07:04.42 where there were horses and oxen and wagons, 00:07:04.45\00:07:08.42 and that sort of thing. 00:07:08.45\00:07:09.55 And not only that, you didn't want them walking down there 00:07:09.58\00:07:13.01 where the horses and donkeys had been. 00:07:14.53\00:07:16.91 You get the idea, don't ya. 00:07:16.94\00:07:18.45 For reasons of sanitation, and for reasons of safety, 00:07:19.14\00:07:22.28 the street separated from the sidewalk. 00:07:22.31\00:07:25.19 Well, that leaves us then wondering about that stone. 00:07:25.22\00:07:29.31 This is the reason for the stone. 00:07:29.34\00:07:31.49 In every street, the narrower ones need only one, 00:07:31.52\00:07:34.89 but main street, as we noted and shall again, required three. 00:07:34.92\00:07:39.56 It gets, in the summer time here, very hot. 00:07:40.78\00:07:44.11 But quite unusually, the heat here is not like that 00:07:44.52\00:07:52.28 which you would find in Florida where there's a lot of humidity. 00:07:52.48\00:07:57.96 Or down on the Gulf Coast. 00:07:57.99\00:08:00.24 There's, in fact, very little humidity here. 00:08:00.27\00:08:02.79 High temperatures, but very little humidity. 00:08:02.82\00:08:05.72 Sort of like a desert, an arid sort of a feeling, to the air. 00:08:05.75\00:08:09.98 Therefore then, in the summer time, they would, 00:08:10.01\00:08:13.59 from the aqueducts, open the gates and bring in fresh water, 00:08:13.62\00:08:17.96 and fill the streets with water up to near the top of the curb. 00:08:17.99\00:08:22.28 And when the afternoon and evening breezes blew, 00:08:22.31\00:08:25.54 it would blow across the water in the streets. 00:08:25.57\00:08:28.94 And air condition the city in the same way that a 00:08:28.97\00:08:32.05 swamp cooler works here in our areas. 00:08:32.08\00:08:34.89 Fascinating. 00:08:34.92\00:08:36.12 And so on main street, it took three of those steps 00:08:36.15\00:08:38.82 to get across from one side to the other. 00:08:38.85\00:08:41.65 Notice something else too. 00:08:41.68\00:08:42.90 You see the deep ruts here that have been carved over the 00:08:42.93\00:08:46.40 centuries as the result of the turnings of the wagon wheels. 00:08:46.43\00:08:50.98 Most remarkable. 00:08:51.01\00:08:52.36 There's much more to see. 00:08:52.39\00:08:54.03 We're going back now, down the streets in the shopping area 00:08:54.91\00:08:58.31 and the areas of government, and we're going to spend some time. 00:08:58.34\00:09:01.42 And notice what kind of businesses were conducted here. 00:09:01.45\00:09:04.98 And in some cases, even the family members 00:09:05.01\00:09:07.78 who conducted the business. 00:09:07.81\00:09:09.69 National Geographic magazine, only just a few months ago, 00:09:11.55\00:09:15.51 did a special on these two cities, Pompeii and Herculaneum. 00:09:15.54\00:09:21.45 And, as I mentioned at the outset, the excavations 00:09:21.48\00:09:24.44 continue to this very day. 00:09:24.47\00:09:26.26 And they made some discoveries that were unknown since, 00:09:26.29\00:09:31.44 you know, the 18th century when the excavations began. 00:09:31.47\00:09:36.03 And among those discoveries, it was learned that is was 00:09:36.06\00:09:41.05 the position, often, of the man who was running for Mayor, 00:09:41.08\00:09:44.99 or maybe for Governor of the county, that's the way we'd 00:09:45.02\00:09:48.12 say it in our comparisons today, he would make this promise, 00:09:48.15\00:09:51.95 "If you vote for me this November, I promise to put 00:09:51.98\00:09:55.70 on your street corner, a fountain. 00:09:55.73\00:09:58.62 So that you don't have to walk a long ways to the canal 00:09:58.65\00:10:01.67 to get your water to bring home. " 00:10:01.70\00:10:03.40 And so now, on nearly every street corner, 00:10:03.43\00:10:06.88 there is the remains, or in this case, 00:10:06.91\00:10:10.46 the completeness of a fountain. 00:10:10.49\00:10:12.80 And you'll notice something interesting about this one. 00:10:12.83\00:10:15.12 The figure has a mouth. 00:10:15.15\00:10:18.22 It's the figure, by the way, of an Italian boy. 00:10:18.25\00:10:20.91 And the water comes out of his mouth and fills this cistern. 00:10:20.94\00:10:24.56 And if you lived even in the poor section of town, 00:10:24.59\00:10:28.21 or the middle class section, you need not go far. 00:10:28.24\00:10:31.38 Nearly every corner had one of these. 00:10:31.41\00:10:33.20 In this case, when it filled the cistern to overflowing, 00:10:33.23\00:10:37.00 the overflow would run out this little niche, 00:10:37.03\00:10:39.75 back down into the streets that were filled with water. 00:10:39.78\00:10:43.78 The wealthy folks had indoor plumbing, as we're going to see 00:10:44.28\00:10:48.91 just a little bit from now. 00:10:48.94\00:10:51.08 And so, we're going to stop, first of all you and I, 00:10:51.11\00:10:54.16 at the Curia. 00:10:54.19\00:10:55.53 The sign says "Curia". 00:10:55.56\00:10:57.03 That is the Latin word for the Senate. 00:10:57.06\00:10:59.87 During the bad weather in Rome, the Caesar would come down 00:11:01.03\00:11:05.40 to the Bay area to spend a few weeks, or perhaps 00:11:05.43\00:11:08.23 even months here in the warmth of the beautiful sun 00:11:08.26\00:11:12.91 and enjoying the blue waters off of the Bay of Naples. 00:11:12.94\00:11:16.84 When he would come down here, he would bring with him 00:11:16.87\00:11:19.25 many of his law makers. 00:11:19.28\00:11:20.80 Today we call them the Cabinet, and some of the 00:11:20.83\00:11:23.60 main Senators, you see. 00:11:23.63\00:11:25.16 And here in this Curia, the Senate, they would make laws, 00:11:25.19\00:11:29.69 pass laws, vote laws, that would have an effect throughout the 00:11:29.72\00:11:32.57 whole of the known world. 00:11:32.60\00:11:34.51 Because, as we studied our first night together here, 00:11:34.54\00:11:37.60 Rome for many, many, many years was in charge 00:11:37.63\00:11:40.88 of much of the civilized world. 00:11:40.91\00:11:44.02 Certainly the west. Alright. 00:11:44.05\00:11:46.21 Now as we move on down the street, 00:11:46.24\00:11:48.41 we come to a little shop. 00:11:48.44\00:11:50.28 It says, "Bottega del frutti venditore Felix. " 00:11:50.31\00:11:54.19 This was a fruit and vegetable stand. 00:11:54.22\00:11:57.29 A farmers market. 00:11:57.32\00:11:58.72 That would be the nearest thing that we know 00:11:58.75\00:12:01.18 to the reality here. 00:12:01.39\00:12:03.10 And furthermore, we know the name of the man 00:12:03.13\00:12:06.84 who operated the place. 00:12:06.87\00:12:07.97 His name was Felix. 00:12:08.00\00:12:09.96 Now how did they know? 00:12:09.99\00:12:11.21 How did they make these discoveries? 00:12:11.24\00:12:12.57 How could they be sure? 00:12:12.60\00:12:13.88 Two ways. 00:12:14.86\00:12:16.38 There were clay records, records that became in stone. 00:12:17.68\00:12:24.47 Written upon clay, clay tablets. 00:12:24.50\00:12:26.81 And then over the centuries, it turned hard as stone. 00:12:26.84\00:12:29.81 And records of purchases and sales, 00:12:29.84\00:12:33.06 and records of the family names were to be found 00:12:33.09\00:12:36.31 in and on those clay tablets. 00:12:36.34\00:12:38.80 But perhaps even more importantly, 00:12:38.83\00:12:40.98 in the excavations, they would often come to a cavity. 00:12:41.01\00:12:45.93 And at the outset, they were just breaking in 00:12:46.78\00:12:48.64 and paying little attention. 00:12:48.67\00:12:49.85 But some scientists said, "We're making a mistake here. 00:12:49.88\00:12:52.74 When we come to these cavities, these hollows, 00:12:52.77\00:12:55.91 instead of just smashing in, we're going to carefully, 00:12:55.94\00:12:59.08 into this bubble, make a little hole. 00:12:59.11\00:13:01.01 About the size of a pencil. 00:13:01.04\00:13:02.65 And then through that hole, we're going to slip 00:13:02.68\00:13:05.66 a rubber tube. 00:13:05.69\00:13:06.94 And through the rubber tube, we're going to pump 00:13:06.97\00:13:09.53 a very liquid plaster of paris like substance. 00:13:09.56\00:13:13.19 Wait until it hardens and solidifies, and then chip away 00:13:13.22\00:13:16.40 the ash and the lapilli, and see what we find. " 00:13:16.43\00:13:19.42 So, in cases as in this shop, they found melons. 00:13:20.30\00:13:25.50 They found tomatoes, and they found bell peppers. 00:13:25.53\00:13:29.56 And that's how we know then, by the records on clay tablets 00:13:29.59\00:13:33.61 and by the evidence of the excavations 00:13:33.64\00:13:36.16 of those little hollows, what kind of business 00:13:36.19\00:13:38.91 was operated here. 00:13:38.94\00:13:40.74 The fruit vendor by the name of Felix. 00:13:40.77\00:13:44.11 Now just down the street a little ways, 00:13:44.14\00:13:46.49 we come to another place. 00:13:46.52\00:13:47.98 And this place tells us what happened here. 00:13:48.01\00:13:51.08 And it also tells us the name of the man. 00:13:51.11\00:13:53.59 It says, this is the tavern of a guy by the name of Antonio. 00:13:53.62\00:13:57.93 And I wouldn't be too surprised if they didn't 00:13:57.96\00:14:00.46 refer to it as "Tony's place". 00:14:00.49\00:14:02.91 Huh? 00:14:02.94\00:14:04.13 Let's have a look around, shall we. 00:14:04.59\00:14:06.50 I stood here to shoot this picture 00:14:06.53\00:14:08.87 and I saw this marble colored bar. 00:14:10.13\00:14:12.80 And then I went over to the left and I saw this oven. 00:14:13.82\00:14:17.83 It had originally been completely covered with marble, 00:14:17.86\00:14:19.89 but some of the marble has fallen away 00:14:19.92\00:14:22.12 to expose the bricks. 00:14:22.15\00:14:23.51 And by the way, any time you see that long narrow brick, 00:14:23.54\00:14:26.87 you can be quite sure that it is from the Roman era. 00:14:26.90\00:14:30.18 Because that's the way they made bricks, 00:14:30.21\00:14:32.25 the style and the size of the Roman brick. 00:14:32.28\00:14:35.12 And so I stood here and thought and shot a picture or two, 00:14:35.15\00:14:38.40 and then it came to me. 00:14:38.43\00:14:40.30 This had to have been a pizza parlor. 00:14:41.25\00:14:43.33 What do you think, huh? 00:14:43.36\00:14:44.46 If that isn't a pizza oven, I've never seen one. 00:14:44.86\00:14:47.45 And the bar over there is where you'd choose 00:14:47.48\00:14:49.97 your root beer or 7-Up. 00:14:50.00\00:14:51.88 Don't you suppose? 00:14:51.91\00:14:53.12 Someone said, and I think rightly so, 00:14:53.15\00:14:55.69 pizza was born in Italy but grew up in the United States. 00:14:55.72\00:15:00.18 We eat far, far more pizza than they do over in Italy. 00:15:00.21\00:15:03.59 And ours is quite different, matter of fact. 00:15:03.62\00:15:05.92 Well, I don't know if it was Dominos or Pizza Hut, but 00:15:05.95\00:15:09.89 Charlie's tavern looks to me like a pizza parlor. 00:15:09.92\00:15:13.49 Let's look around further. 00:15:13.52\00:15:15.13 Out at the entry, out at the street level, 00:15:15.16\00:15:17.94 there is another bar. 00:15:17.97\00:15:20.19 And this one is curious in that it has big holes. 00:15:20.22\00:15:24.26 The bar was made to be water tight. 00:15:24.29\00:15:27.44 And then the inside was filled with water. 00:15:28.51\00:15:30.87 And the beverages, whether they be hard or fresh juice, 00:15:30.90\00:15:35.57 I don't know. 00:15:35.60\00:15:36.72 But they were put in earthen jugs, big earthen bottles, 00:15:36.75\00:15:41.02 and then sat down inside this water, and that would 00:15:41.05\00:15:45.20 keep the beverage cool throughout the day. 00:15:45.23\00:15:47.79 Not ice cold, but much cooler than it 00:15:47.82\00:15:49.95 might have been otherwise. 00:15:49.98\00:15:51.48 My three buddies are putting on a little bit of a 00:15:51.51\00:15:53.43 performance for you there. 00:15:53.46\00:15:54.82 They're pretending as if they're stopping to have a beverage. 00:15:54.85\00:15:58.90 I can imagine some guy on his way from the job, work place, 00:15:58.93\00:16:05.88 to his home, coming home a little late. 00:16:05.91\00:16:07.93 And his wife asks him, "What happened dear. 00:16:07.96\00:16:10.13 Did you have a flat tire?" 00:16:10.16\00:16:11.91 And he says, "No, I stopped off at 00:16:11.94\00:16:13.93 Tony's place for a cold one. " 00:16:13.96\00:16:15.95 Look, you didn't even have to step out of the street 00:16:15.98\00:16:19.55 in order to enjoy the beverage. 00:16:19.58\00:16:21.39 You could stand right out in the street. 00:16:21.42\00:16:23.75 And in the heat of summer, you would be ankle deep 00:16:23.78\00:16:27.22 in cool water, huh. 00:16:27.25\00:16:28.75 Refreshment on both ends. 00:16:28.78\00:16:30.96 How unique. 00:16:30.99\00:16:31.96 We look around in the back side, we see another of the bars. 00:16:31.97\00:16:34.28 And it has two of those openings as you can see there, rather. 00:16:34.48\00:16:38.68 And the earthen jugs are still in them. 00:16:38.71\00:16:41.01 And then over in the corners, we see others of those 00:16:41.04\00:16:43.71 great big bottles, and still more back in the back room. 00:16:43.74\00:16:47.26 Our next stop is at the bakery. 00:16:48.28\00:16:50.45 And my buddy is leaning up against a big grind stone. 00:16:50.48\00:16:54.90 Here, the farmers would bring their grain, 00:16:54.93\00:16:58.23 sell it for a cash crop, trade it for baked goods. 00:16:58.26\00:17:03.21 Or have it milled and then take the flour home 00:17:03.24\00:17:07.19 so the ladies could make their favorite desserts, 00:17:07.22\00:17:11.05 or their favorite breads, I suppose. 00:17:11.08\00:17:13.81 We're going to move on back now into the inside, 00:17:13.84\00:17:16.56 and there is the oven. 00:17:16.59\00:17:17.97 Ladies and gentlemen, back in there is a shelf. 00:17:18.00\00:17:20.90 And that shelf has a big pit beneath it 00:17:20.93\00:17:23.92 in which the fire burned. 00:17:23.95\00:17:25.50 The shelf is made of stone. 00:17:25.53\00:17:27.22 And the fire that burned would heat the rocks, 00:17:27.25\00:17:29.73 and the bread atop those, in the pans, stone pans, would bake. 00:17:29.76\00:17:34.93 Now, in the museum, there they have loaves of bread 00:17:34.96\00:17:41.48 that were found here at the time of the excavations, 00:17:41.51\00:17:44.93 now in the early part of the 19th century, 1815-1816. 00:17:44.96\00:17:49.43 They have the loaves of bread, that were discovered here 00:17:49.46\00:17:51.61 in this bakery, on display in the museum. 00:17:51.64\00:17:54.77 They're a little more than a day old. 00:17:54.80\00:17:56.89 Pretty crusty now. 00:17:56.92\00:17:58.86 But it's a fascinating thing. 00:17:58.89\00:18:01.41 Again, it just points out how the time capsule was lifted 00:18:01.44\00:18:05.65 and we make discoveries about folks that we didn't know 00:18:05.68\00:18:08.79 very much about before. 00:18:08.82\00:18:10.48 Wherever the Romans went in number, they would build 00:18:10.51\00:18:13.38 for themselves, a coliseum. 00:18:13.41\00:18:15.76 Here we have the coliseum of the city of Pompeii. 00:18:15.79\00:18:20.64 And this, by the way, is in the area of the 00:18:20.67\00:18:22.59 more recent excavations. 00:18:22.62\00:18:25.09 I happened to be in Phoenix, when a few weeks ago, 00:18:26.38\00:18:29.05 the super bowl was played. 00:18:29.09\00:18:30.49 I was in an RV parked only just a stone's throw 00:18:30.52\00:18:35.19 from the great Phoenix University coliseum. 00:18:35.22\00:18:37.92 And I noted that the Phoenix coliseum was built 00:18:37.95\00:18:42.35 after the style of the Roman coliseum. 00:18:42.38\00:18:44.99 I have noted further that where the Portland Trail Blazers play, 00:18:45.02\00:18:49.59 and where the Seattle Seahawks play, 00:18:49.62\00:18:51.77 or wherever your favorite team plays, 00:18:51.80\00:18:53.78 they play in a coliseum that was based after 00:18:53.81\00:18:57.53 that of the Roman era. 00:18:57.56\00:18:59.34 Somebody said, "What goes around comes around. " 00:18:59.37\00:19:02.28 And others have said, "Hang on to your old neckties. " 00:19:02.31\00:19:07.50 I don't know. 00:19:07.53\00:19:09.38 We're going to climb up the steps there, 00:19:10.14\00:19:13.38 ladies and gentlemen. 00:19:13.41\00:19:14.46 And we're going to go through one of those arches. 00:19:14.49\00:19:16.80 And then, we shall filter down into the seating area. 00:19:16.83\00:19:21.77 There was a parapet wall that was about 12 feet high 00:19:21.80\00:19:25.44 to separate the players from the spectators, 00:19:25.47\00:19:29.67 and the players from the animals. 00:19:29.70\00:19:31.82 Because there were African animals that were kept here. 00:19:31.85\00:19:34.70 I have been asked, "Did Christians die here? 00:19:35.70\00:19:38.24 Were Christians thrown to starved animals?" 00:19:38.27\00:19:40.63 And the historical answer is, yes. 00:19:40.66\00:19:42.92 Not in near the number as what happened over in Rome 00:19:42.95\00:19:47.03 at the great coliseum, where we may visit on another evening. 00:19:47.06\00:19:49.57 But Christians did die at the coliseum of Pompeii as well. 00:19:49.60\00:19:54.62 It was a pagan world into which our Lord Jesus was born. 00:19:54.65\00:19:58.85 And they worshipped a host of pagan gods, 00:19:58.88\00:20:01.72 gods of the sun and the moon and the stars. 00:20:01.75\00:20:05.85 These are the remains of the Temple of Fortuna Augusta. 00:20:05.88\00:20:10.25 And we're not going to go into that tonight, but 00:20:10.28\00:20:12.43 when we're finished this evening, you may want to go 00:20:12.46\00:20:14.98 home and pull it up on your your computer, or read it 00:20:15.01\00:20:17.78 out of your encyclopedia. 00:20:17.81\00:20:19.87 It was a fascinating theory behind Fortuna Augusta. 00:20:19.90\00:20:24.22 But the main temple was the Temple of Apollo. 00:20:24.25\00:20:28.20 Now Apollo was one of the names of the sun god, 00:20:28.23\00:20:30.84 the Greek name of the sun god. 00:20:30.87\00:20:33.28 And when the Caesar was in residence here, 00:20:33.31\00:20:36.20 this is where he came to worship. 00:20:36.23\00:20:37.91 Originally, this temple was covered over with 00:20:37.94\00:20:41.92 beautiful white Italian marble. 00:20:41.95\00:20:45.03 And it was said that on a clear day, 00:20:45.06\00:20:47.52 when the sun was brightly shining, 00:20:47.55\00:20:49.90 and the white caps were glistening, 00:20:49.93\00:20:51.99 this temple could be seen for miles and miles off shore. 00:20:52.02\00:20:57.34 And it glistened like a diamond in the sunlight. 00:20:57.37\00:21:01.43 So we can just imagine, the Emperor of the world 00:21:01.46\00:21:04.45 and leader of much of the known world, 00:21:04.48\00:21:06.88 coming right here to pray to the many gods; 00:21:06.91\00:21:10.43 sun, the moon, and the stars. 00:21:10.46\00:21:12.86 Now I mentioned to you folks, that the poorer folks, 00:21:13.78\00:21:17.75 those who lived in the town houses and the condominiums 00:21:17.78\00:21:23.58 and the cold water walkups, didn't have far 00:21:23.61\00:21:26.28 to go for fresh water because nearly 00:21:26.31\00:21:28.60 every corner had a cistern. 00:21:28.63\00:21:31.58 But the wealthy folks had indoor plumbing. 00:21:31.61\00:21:34.74 And we're going to begin now to see 00:21:34.77\00:21:36.85 the evidence of some of that. 00:21:36.88\00:21:38.71 If you'll look very carefully there, 00:21:39.63\00:21:41.11 you'll see in the picture, the piping that brought fresh water 00:21:41.14\00:21:45.11 off the aqueduct. 00:21:45.14\00:21:46.57 Twisted and turned and joints of stone pipe that were 00:21:47.62\00:21:52.54 hollowed out somehow and then made together. 00:21:52.57\00:21:54.64 Turned and turned, and then went back inside. 00:21:54.67\00:21:58.74 Uh-huh, that's exactly what it is. 00:22:08.20\00:22:12.24 That's a public restroom. 00:22:13.24\00:22:15.12 But in defense of my friend, I quickly need to say to you, 00:22:17.80\00:22:20.12 he's only sitting there to change the film in his camera. 00:22:20.15\00:22:22.77 Here's how it worked. 00:22:25.25\00:22:26.48 Fresh water came from off the aqueducts, 00:22:26.88\00:22:29.74 out of the canal, if you please. 00:22:29.78\00:22:31.84 On a gravity flow, it ran beneath these stone stools 00:22:31.87\00:22:36.89 and carried all the sewer away to the treatment plant. 00:22:36.92\00:22:42.68 Most remarkable. 00:22:42.71\00:22:44.16 Five hundred years before the birth of Jesus, 00:22:44.19\00:22:48.23 indoor plumbing. 00:22:48.26\00:22:49.51 Now, we have seen where the poorer folks lived 00:22:51.65\00:22:55.27 and where the everyday man shopped. 00:22:55.30\00:22:57.93 We're going to transition now and go into, what over in Idaho 00:22:57.96\00:23:02.72 we would call, the mucky muck neighborhood, alright. 00:23:02.75\00:23:06.68 This is where the rich folks lived. 00:23:06.71\00:23:08.99 And when I travel around through the cities 00:23:09.02\00:23:11.62 and villages of the U.S., I will often come to a home 00:23:11.65\00:23:15.58 or a property that has a sign up on a tree or up on a gate 00:23:15.61\00:23:20.05 that says, "Beware of the dog. " 00:23:20.08\00:23:24.82 Oh, and by the way, I must tell you. 00:23:26.12\00:23:29.94 You know, we live in a day and age where we can learn 00:23:29.97\00:23:33.74 so very much if we'll just be quiet and listen a little bit. 00:23:33.77\00:23:38.12 And that's not easy for me, but this is what I learned 00:23:40.07\00:23:43.09 from Judge Judy. 00:23:43.12\00:23:44.80 Now listen, if you put a sign on your door, on your fence, 00:23:45.88\00:23:51.33 or on your gate that says, "Beware of the dog," 00:23:51.36\00:23:54.08 you're only admitting that you knew in advance 00:23:54.11\00:23:57.72 that you had a dangerous situation. 00:23:57.75\00:24:00.48 So if you have one of those pit bulls that likes to take a bite 00:24:01.51\00:24:05.13 out of everybody, don't put up a sign. 00:24:05.16\00:24:08.57 Just let him be a surprise, I guess. 00:24:08.60\00:24:11.01 Did you, by the way, hear about that little guy 00:24:12.50\00:24:14.54 that came running in the house screaming, 00:24:14.57\00:24:16.61 crying, just screaming, "Mama, mama. " 00:24:16.64\00:24:19.33 He was just scared to death. 00:24:19.36\00:24:20.85 And his mom asked, "What was the matter, honey? 00:24:20.88\00:24:22.94 What's the matter?" 00:24:22.97\00:24:23.94 He said, "The neighbor's dog, that great big dog. " 00:24:23.95\00:24:26.49 And the mother said, she inspected him, 00:24:26.52\00:24:28.71 "Did he bite you son, did he bite you?" 00:24:28.74\00:24:31.29 "No, but tasted me. " 00:24:31.32\00:24:33.76 Well over here, instead of putting a sign on the gate 00:24:39.57\00:24:43.19 or on the door, or something, they simply, 00:24:43.22\00:24:46.08 in the mosaic of the sidewalk, put a picture of this dog. 00:24:46.11\00:24:50.87 He's in the attack mode, you see. 00:24:50.90\00:24:52.67 He's crouching, he's tethered, and his fangs are bared. 00:24:52.70\00:24:56.78 He's giving the warning, "Enter at your own risk. " 00:24:56.81\00:25:00.03 "Beware of the dog. " 00:25:00.06\00:25:02.34 We, by the way, have a 10 pound attack poodle. 00:25:03.53\00:25:09.23 And he'll taste ya. 00:25:11.04\00:25:12.83 We step inside the home and the first thing we notice is 00:25:14.87\00:25:18.73 the hole in the roof. 00:25:18.76\00:25:20.08 What's going on? Was there a strong wind? 00:25:20.68\00:25:22.83 No, this is the atrium, ladies and gentlemen. 00:25:22.86\00:25:25.71 And that hole is there winter, summer, spring, and fall. 00:25:25.74\00:25:29.50 And if you're wondering what happens when it rains, 00:25:29.53\00:25:31.73 the answer is very simple. 00:25:31.76\00:25:33.14 The rain water comes right in. 00:25:33.17\00:25:35.49 But beneath that opening, there is a fountain in the floor. 00:25:35.52\00:25:39.96 And it's just a bit larger than the opening in the ceiling. 00:25:39.99\00:25:44.01 And it serves two purposes. 00:25:44.04\00:25:45.95 One is aesthetic. 00:25:45.98\00:25:47.56 Every eye that came to this home would look at the fountain. 00:25:47.59\00:25:54.12 Often times, they'd have a little statue or something, 00:25:54.15\00:25:56.76 we're told, in the center of that fountain. 00:25:56.79\00:25:59.31 And so it was pretty, potted plants around it. 00:25:59.34\00:26:03.03 But it had a practical side as well. 00:26:03.06\00:26:05.53 Every person that came in the house, whether guest 00:26:05.56\00:26:08.63 or family member, went over beside the fountain, 00:26:08.66\00:26:12.20 removed their shoes, and bathed their feet. 00:26:12.23\00:26:15.96 And that saved on the vacuum cleaning, you see. 00:26:15.99\00:26:18.82 Not a bad idea. 00:26:18.85\00:26:21.33 Every major room in this home looked out on to the garden. 00:26:21.36\00:26:26.15 The dining room, the family room, the formal sitting room, 00:26:26.18\00:26:32.26 and the major bedroom, master bedroom. 00:26:32.29\00:26:34.77 They all opened out on to the garden. 00:26:34.80\00:26:38.47 Now, the plants here, of course, don't date back 00:26:38.50\00:26:41.58 to the time of the explosion, before Jesus. 00:26:41.61\00:26:45.04 But the statuary, on the other hand, does. 00:26:45.07\00:26:47.69 And that which isn't that old, has been recopied 00:26:47.72\00:26:51.03 from some of the ruins that were found here. 00:26:51.06\00:26:53.36 Well, we mentioned a bit ago that during the time of 00:26:54.85\00:26:58.08 the excavations, they would find these bubbles. 00:26:58.11\00:27:00.95 Instead of just smashing into them, they finally came 00:27:00.98\00:27:03.65 to the idea of filling them full of a material that would harden 00:27:03.68\00:27:08.21 and then carefully chip away. 00:27:08.24\00:27:10.07 And as they did that, they found not only the evidence of melons 00:27:10.10\00:27:13.43 and tomatoes and eggplant, but also of other living things 00:27:13.46\00:27:17.85 like this dog. 00:27:17.88\00:27:19.95 Is this a dog's body? 00:27:19.98\00:27:21.60 No. That had long, long ago returned to dust. 00:27:21.63\00:27:26.61 And ash to ash. 00:27:26.64\00:27:27.67 But this is what the dog looked like when they chipped away 00:27:27.70\00:27:31.17 the stone that had once been molten rock. 00:27:31.20\00:27:34.50 The evidence obviously is that the dog died 00:27:35.31\00:27:39.11 as a result of asphyxiation. 00:27:39.14\00:27:41.41 Breathing that poisonous gas. 00:27:41.44\00:27:43.03 Died for want of pure air and oxygen. 00:27:43.06\00:27:46.88 He died in a twisted and contorted form. 00:27:46.91\00:27:50.20 And not only did the animals die in that way, 00:27:50.23\00:27:53.07 but so also is the evidence, did the people as well. 00:27:53.10\00:27:56.73 Here was a person that was found in the corner of the basement. 00:27:56.76\00:28:01.51 And you notice the attempt to cover the nose and the mouth 00:28:01.54\00:28:05.26 from the poisonous gas. 00:28:05.29\00:28:06.81 Trying to hold the hands over the nose and the mouth. 00:28:06.84\00:28:10.06 But it didn't work. 00:28:10.09\00:28:11.25 Many of these figures were found with their gems and their jewels 00:28:11.28\00:28:17.01 and their gold coins in their hands. 00:28:17.04\00:28:19.77 The evidence from National Geographic magazine, 00:28:19.80\00:28:22.84 as I alluded before, is that many of them had 00:28:22.87\00:28:25.22 been out on the bay. 00:28:25.25\00:28:27.82 They had been, maybe a mile or two off shore. 00:28:27.86\00:28:30.07 They were out where they were safe from the explosion, 00:28:30.10\00:28:33.01 safe from the fire that would follow. 00:28:33.04\00:28:36.27 But they went back. 00:28:36.30\00:28:38.18 They went back to claim their treasures. 00:28:38.21\00:28:41.44 They went back to get their gold, to get coins, 00:28:41.47\00:28:44.25 to get their jewelry. 00:28:44.28\00:28:45.63 They went back, many of them, simply because they did not 00:28:45.66\00:28:50.05 want to leave their beautiful homes. 00:28:50.08\00:28:52.60 And they paid a price too high, 00:28:52.63\00:28:54.61 as you can see here. 00:28:54.64\00:28:56.09 And again, a prostrate form, again with that vain attempt 00:28:56.12\00:29:01.80 to shield the nose and the mouth. 00:29:01.83\00:29:04.51 There are so many parallels, ladies and gentlemen, 00:29:06.04\00:29:08.76 between their day and time, and our own. 00:29:08.79\00:29:12.13 So very many. 00:29:12.16\00:29:13.57 If you today, this day and age, give folks the choice 00:29:16.02\00:29:19.66 of coming to meetings, similar to these perhaps, 00:29:19.69\00:29:23.27 to learn the truths of Jesus, 00:29:24.23\00:29:26.43 to see where we are in the stream of time, 00:29:27.31\00:29:30.19 and to get ready to meet Him in peace, get to know him better, 00:29:30.22\00:29:33.46 memorize His promises. 00:29:33.49\00:29:35.14 You give folks a choice between doing something like that 00:29:35.17\00:29:38.43 or going to the super bowl, going to the high school 00:29:38.46\00:29:42.36 basketball game, or going to the dance, 00:29:42.39\00:29:44.98 where will the majority go? 00:29:45.01\00:29:47.28 Yea. 00:29:48.03\00:29:49.23 Elsewhere. 00:29:49.26\00:29:50.88 They have their priorities 00:29:50.91\00:29:52.89 in an improper place. 00:29:54.06\00:29:55.69 The very fact that you folks are here tonight proves 00:29:55.72\00:29:58.82 that you have your priorities in order. 00:29:58.85\00:30:01.23 And I thank you so very much for traveling with me. 00:30:01.26\00:30:03.96 And now we will continue with our program. 00:30:03.99\00:30:06.65 The lead story on the World News tonight was the bad news. 00:30:09.65\00:30:13.35 The price of crude oil broke an all time high. 00:30:13.38\00:30:16.57 They're rather sure that in the next week or two, 00:30:16.60\00:30:19.65 it's going to break another record or two. 00:30:19.68\00:30:23.02 I've noticed since I've been in the area that the 00:30:23.05\00:30:25.03 price of gasoline, and even worse the price of diesel, 00:30:25.06\00:30:29.06 has jumped about 25 cents in ten days. 00:30:29.09\00:30:32.28 And we're paying the price and we're suffering the hurt. 00:30:32.31\00:30:35.01 Peggy tried to make an order for some video equipment 00:30:36.16\00:30:41.64 a couple of days ago. 00:30:41.67\00:30:43.03 And she was going to pay for that with our 00:30:43.06\00:30:45.18 American Express card. 00:30:45.21\00:30:47.00 And the folks at the place of business down in Phoenix said, 00:30:47.03\00:30:50.36 "Well, there's something wrong with American Express 00:30:50.39\00:30:53.38 and maybe if you made a phone call down there. " 00:30:53.41\00:30:56.19 And so Peggy made a phone call and they said, 00:30:56.22\00:30:57.92 "Well, our computers are down. " 00:30:57.95\00:31:00.24 They said, "Really what we're doing is just kind of 00:31:00.27\00:31:03.00 updating our computers. 00:31:03.03\00:31:04.82 And maybe before the day is over, 00:31:04.85\00:31:06.67 we'll have it all fixed up. " 00:31:06.70\00:31:08.01 So Peggy, just before the end of business 00:31:08.04\00:31:10.43 back there, called again. 00:31:10.46\00:31:11.43 Now they said, "Our computers are still down. " 00:31:11.44\00:31:13.84 And then, a day later, we learned the truth. 00:31:13.87\00:31:17.75 The power went out in Tampa, Florida near the headquarter 00:31:17.78\00:31:20.96 of American Express cards and the financial cards. 00:31:21.26\00:31:26.98 And do you know what they first blamed it on? 00:31:27.01\00:31:29.30 We're not sure, they're doing some research. 00:31:29.33\00:31:30.87 They're saying today, that this may not have been the case. 00:31:30.90\00:31:33.16 That it may have been a man who just opened the wrong box 00:31:33.19\00:31:35.69 and pushed the wrong button. 00:31:35.72\00:31:37.02 But yesterday, there was the very strong suggestion 00:31:37.05\00:31:40.34 that what had happened was, some high school kid 00:31:40.37\00:31:43.10 had somehow, with his computer, hacked in to the 00:31:43.13\00:31:47.33 nuclear power supply and shut down the power. 00:31:47.36\00:31:50.72 An interesting day that we've come to. 00:31:50.75\00:31:53.55 Power outages that could shutdown Wall Street 00:31:54.57\00:31:57.75 and shutdown the financial institutions of the world. 00:31:57.78\00:32:00.16 Tonight, we're going to talk about our trip-trap 00:32:00.19\00:32:02.64 troubled planet in its context with a final economic crisis. 00:32:02.67\00:32:06.88 And before we go further, I want to say to all of you folks, 00:32:06.91\00:32:09.66 Lyle is a loyal American. 00:32:09.69\00:32:11.86 And I hope that comes across. 00:32:11.89\00:32:13.46 I have been to 62 other countries of the world 00:32:13.49\00:32:16.47 and one of the things that my world travel has done is 00:32:16.50\00:32:18.99 make me love these United States of America. 00:32:19.02\00:32:21.97 There's not another place like it on the face of God's earth. 00:32:22.00\00:32:25.22 We ought to put in a thank offering every day 00:32:25.25\00:32:27.50 for the privilege of living here. 00:32:27.53\00:32:29.34 This is the great country. 00:32:29.37\00:32:32.25 God's United States of America. 00:32:32.28\00:32:34.85 But while I'm a loyal American, I'm at the same time, 00:32:34.88\00:32:37.80 a concerned American. 00:32:37.83\00:32:39.48 And I discovered that I'm not alone in my concerns. 00:32:39.51\00:32:42.00 As I travel from north to south and east to west, 00:32:42.03\00:32:44.52 I discovered that there are thousands, 00:32:44.55\00:32:46.74 yea, tens of thousands of Americans who, 00:32:46.77\00:32:49.20 like myself, are concerned. 00:32:49.23\00:32:50.93 And one of our grave concerns is the loss of freedom 00:32:50.96\00:32:54.88 that we have known since, basically 9/11. 00:32:54.91\00:32:58.07 We have lost, ladies and gentlemen, more freedoms 00:32:58.10\00:33:00.55 since the Twin Towers came crashing down, 00:33:00.58\00:33:02.72 than in all of the prior history of the United States 00:33:02.75\00:33:05.44 together combined. 00:33:05.47\00:33:07.28 I read not very long ago, again from a news magazine, 00:33:07.31\00:33:12.08 that if you're the average person in the average 00:33:12.11\00:33:14.45 American city, and yours probably wouldn't qualify 00:33:14.48\00:33:17.83 but it's getting close. 00:33:17.86\00:33:18.94 If you're an average person who makes average trips to town 00:33:18.97\00:33:22.42 in the average city, your picture is going to be taken 00:33:22.45\00:33:26.64 about 270 times per day. 00:33:26.67\00:33:30.50 You're going to be watched by a camera 270 times per day. 00:33:30.53\00:33:34.34 Well, that'll happen to me about 75 times just over in Wal-Mart. 00:33:34.37\00:33:39.58 I'm always looking up and kind of, 00:33:39.61\00:33:42.19 I didn't put it in my pocket, you know. 00:33:42.22\00:33:45.42 Oh, but I did make a mistake. 00:33:45.45\00:33:48.71 George, you won't tell anybody? 00:33:48.74\00:33:51.13 I'm afraid I went through a red light. 00:33:52.07\00:33:54.37 Or it was certainly turning pink. 00:33:54.40\00:33:56.49 And then someone told me, "Didn't you see the sign 00:33:56.52\00:33:59.91 up there that said they're watching you on camera?" 00:33:59.94\00:34:02.56 George, would you tell them I didn't mean to? 00:34:02.59\00:34:04.92 Alright, thank you. 00:34:04.95\00:34:06.93 You'll fix it for me? Alright. 00:34:08.71\00:34:11.57 I thank you kindly. 00:34:12.24\00:34:13.68 Look, yesterday I picked up the Tri-City Herald newspaper. 00:34:13.71\00:34:21.20 And here's the headline, "Toxic Economy Looms. " 00:34:21.23\00:34:23.92 And it goes on to say, "It's a worrisome time. 00:34:24.22\00:34:26.80 The soaring economic ills are causing serious problems. " 00:34:28.21\00:34:34.83 And then it goes on to talk about the high cost of gasoline. 00:34:34.86\00:34:38.43 And it moves further than that to talk about the serious crisis 00:34:38.46\00:34:42.32 in the housing market. 00:34:42.35\00:34:43.50 And they say, together this has the possibility 00:34:43.53\00:34:46.71 to take us into a deep recession and perhaps even stagflation. 00:34:46.74\00:34:53.28 We're not going to go into what stagflation is. 00:34:53.31\00:34:55.23 But you economists, of course, already know all about that. 00:34:55.26\00:34:58.37 I want you now, if you will please to open with me, your 00:34:58.40\00:35:00.69 Bibles, to the last book for those who live in the last days, 00:35:00.72\00:35:05.29 and one of the last chapters, Revelation. 00:35:05.32\00:35:07.37 Revelation, not the last book by accident, 00:35:07.40\00:35:09.63 we need to say over and over again, 00:35:09.83\00:35:11.24 but it's for those who are living in the end times. 00:35:11.27\00:35:13.98 The time is at hand. 00:35:14.01\00:35:15.81 And we've said again and again that prophecy 00:35:15.84\00:35:18.33 is history written in advance. 00:35:18.36\00:35:20.08 And history is the mirror reflection of prophecy. 00:35:20.11\00:35:23.63 And they go together, prophecy and history, like... 00:35:23.66\00:35:25.84 What? You've memorized it. 00:35:25.87\00:35:27.48 ...identical twins. Sure. 00:35:27.51\00:35:29.30 Prophecy and history; identical twins. 00:35:29.33\00:35:31.78 And so right now, we're going to read together 00:35:31.81\00:35:34.50 a little bit of prophecy. 00:35:34.53\00:35:35.86 Revelation chapter 13 contains the most awesome warning 00:35:35.89\00:35:39.18 to be found anywhere in God's word. 00:35:39.21\00:35:40.96 And I'm going to take up the reading at verse 15. 00:35:40.99\00:35:44.71 Revelation chapter 13, beginning with the 15th verse. 00:35:44.74\00:35:49.61 And it says about a certain power, which we'll say more 00:35:50.60\00:35:53.13 on another evening, "He had power to give life 00:35:53.16\00:35:56.67 to the image of the beast, that this image of the beast 00:35:56.70\00:36:00.07 should both speak and cause as many as would not 00:36:00.10\00:36:02.45 worship the image that they should be killed. " 00:36:02.48\00:36:05.00 And he causes a few folks, some of the wealthy and 00:36:05.03\00:36:08.72 some of the poor and some of the... 00:36:08.75\00:36:10.43 Is that the way your Bible reads? 00:36:10.46\00:36:11.90 Come on now, I have to check you out from time to time. 00:36:11.93\00:36:14.20 He causes how many? 00:36:14.23\00:36:15.65 I perhaps, have said it before. 00:36:15.68\00:36:17.64 It needs to be said, however, again. 00:36:17.67\00:36:19.45 When you're studying communication, 00:36:19.48\00:36:25.69 as I did at the graduate level, your professor will often say, 00:36:25.72\00:36:30.42 and even in high school speech classes, I remember, 00:36:30.45\00:36:33.35 in your speech making, in your preaching, 00:36:33.38\00:36:35.46 don't make allness statements. 00:36:35.49\00:36:37.26 Don't say, it's always like this or everybody is like that. 00:36:37.29\00:36:40.42 For there are exceptions to every rule. 00:36:40.45\00:36:43.24 And so, don't make allness statements. 00:36:43.27\00:36:44.98 But here, God is making the allness statements. 00:36:45.01\00:36:48.69 And He doesn't do it just once, He does it again and again. 00:36:48.72\00:36:51.75 He doesn't say, "He causes some, or a few, or many. " 00:36:51.78\00:36:55.09 "He causes all, small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, 00:36:55.12\00:36:58.91 to receive a mark either in their right hand 00:36:58.94\00:37:01.13 or in their foreheads. " 00:37:01.16\00:37:03.28 And then, in the following verse 17, 00:37:03.31\00:37:05.79 "And that nobody, no man could buy or sell unless he have 00:37:05.83\00:37:12.23 the mark, or the name of the beast, 00:37:12.26\00:37:14.44 or the number of his name. " 00:37:14.47\00:37:15.97 Now what God is trying to get across to us here is this. 00:37:16.00\00:37:19.85 When these things come down, it won't matter who you are 00:37:20.63\00:37:23.98 or where you live. 00:37:24.01\00:37:25.39 When all of this falls into place, it'll make no difference 00:37:26.90\00:37:30.32 if you're the man who does the surgery beneath 00:37:30.35\00:37:33.20 the great lights, the attorney at the bar, or the guy 00:37:33.23\00:37:37.25 that throws the garbage in the back of the truck, 00:37:37.28\00:37:39.92 or sweeps the street. 00:37:39.95\00:37:42.16 He causes all, small and great, rich and poor. 00:37:42.19\00:37:44.96 Everybody is in the same kind of situation. 00:37:44.99\00:37:48.94 Now this is another statement that needs to be made. 00:37:48.97\00:37:51.62 We've done it before but must, of necessity, do it again. 00:37:51.65\00:37:54.52 The Bible is not just for we who live in the 00:37:56.09\00:37:58.11 United States of America. 00:37:58.14\00:37:59.57 We believe this is a special country, 00:37:59.60\00:38:01.96 a God blessed country certainly. 00:38:01.99\00:38:04.08 But God's word is not only just for those of us who live here 00:38:04.11\00:38:08.61 in the United States. 00:38:08.64\00:38:09.99 It is also for those who live in Japan, 00:38:10.02\00:38:13.28 and for those who live in Germany, 00:38:13.31\00:38:15.03 and those who are down in the Philippines, 00:38:15.06\00:38:17.12 and those in Philadelphia. 00:38:17.15\00:38:18.98 God's word is for all of God's people all around God's earth. 00:38:19.01\00:38:22.85 Therefore then, ladies and gentlemen, 00:38:22.88\00:38:24.84 the warnings found in God's word are not only just for Americans, 00:38:24.87\00:38:29.18 but they're for all people all around the earth. 00:38:29.21\00:38:32.28 Now, having made that point, I move to this one. 00:38:32.31\00:38:35.46 For a long, long while I wondered, 00:38:35.49\00:38:38.47 "How Lord, could this be?" 00:38:38.50\00:38:40.14 How this economic dictatorship to have an affect 00:38:40.17\00:38:44.24 all around the world. 00:38:44.27\00:38:45.64 Over in Japan, and at the same time, out in India 00:38:45.67\00:38:48.70 and other places. 00:38:48.73\00:38:49.70 How could it possibly be? 00:38:49.71\00:38:51.14 We are so diverse, we are so unique. 00:38:51.17\00:38:54.16 We are so very, very individual. 00:38:54.19\00:38:57.26 But in the last few years, ladies and gentlemen, 00:38:57.76\00:39:00.16 this picture, in many, many ways, particularly financial, 00:39:00.19\00:39:04.56 has drastically changed. 00:39:04.59\00:39:06.64 We're all now, interconnected by computer money, together. 00:39:06.67\00:39:12.45 And what one country does, the other country does. 00:39:12.48\00:39:15.93 You probably know that about 70% of the banking of the world 00:39:15.96\00:39:19.91 happens out at Wall Street in New York City. 00:39:19.94\00:39:22.93 And money is not sent in envelopes or safe pouches, 00:39:22.96\00:39:26.73 but rather, it is sent electronically. 00:39:26.76\00:39:29.47 And consequently, now there's a whole new fraud. 00:39:29.50\00:39:32.29 A guy who really knows how to use his computer 00:39:32.32\00:39:35.22 can have transferred from the big city bank 00:39:35.25\00:39:38.09 out to his personal account somewhere in the Bahamas 00:39:38.12\00:39:40.89 or over in Switzerland. 00:39:40.92\00:39:42.61 And perhaps, for months and months and months, 00:39:42.64\00:39:44.63 or perhaps never, does anyone know the difference. 00:39:44.66\00:39:47.42 How many of you folks have heard of Dr. Ben Carson? 00:39:48.59\00:39:51.98 "Gifted Hands," the surgeon from John Hopkins University? 00:39:52.01\00:39:54.70 Have you read his latest book? 00:39:54.73\00:39:56.11 It is fascinating. 00:39:56.14\00:39:57.82 And he concludes with some interesting ideas. 00:39:57.85\00:40:00.73 He said, "I believe that it is time that instead of having 00:40:00.76\00:40:04.10 checkbooks, and instead of doing computer work 00:40:04.13\00:40:07.72 and paying our bills by the computer, 00:40:07.75\00:40:10.22 that we now go to the eye picture. " 00:40:10.25\00:40:14.19 You put your eye, either in your home at your home computer 00:40:14.22\00:40:17.18 or at the bank, and it reads your eye. 00:40:17.21\00:40:20.54 And your eye is more individual than your fingertip. 00:40:20.57\00:40:23.87 And instantly, the transfers are made, either into your account 00:40:23.90\00:40:27.68 or out of your account. 00:40:27.71\00:40:28.81 And he said if we were to do this, we would instantly 00:40:28.84\00:40:32.51 solve 90% of the major crime. 00:40:32.54\00:40:35.53 Now you think about it. 00:40:35.56\00:40:36.80 The guy that sneaks around and stops at the brothel 00:40:38.93\00:40:43.09 there just outside of Las Vegas, and pays with $100 bills, 00:40:43.12\00:40:48.06 is not going to be able to do that. 00:40:48.09\00:40:50.30 And the Mafioso type who gives some guy $50,000 00:40:50.33\00:40:54.35 to knock off his business partner, is not going to be 00:40:54.38\00:40:57.72 able to do that. 00:40:57.75\00:40:59.41 When you look at it from that vantage point, 00:40:59.44\00:41:01.56 it makes a lot of sense. 00:41:01.59\00:41:04.10 We could suddenly reduce crime maybe 50-70%. 00:41:04.13\00:41:08.63 But we would be sacrificing our freedoms. 00:41:09.38\00:41:13.54 Exactly so. 00:41:13.57\00:41:15.12 And so, the devils last attempt to take total control 00:41:15.67\00:41:18.15 of the world is going to be through the economy, 00:41:18.25\00:41:21.31 through money. 00:41:21.34\00:41:22.71 The love of money. 00:41:22.74\00:41:24.01 You remember our Lord Jesus that said, 00:41:24.04\00:41:26.03 "You can't server both God and mammon. " 00:41:26.06\00:41:29.53 That's the reading from the Kind James. 00:41:29.56\00:41:31.35 But the translation in the new language, 00:41:31.38\00:41:34.03 the modern languages, is very simple. 00:41:34.06\00:41:35.74 "You can't put Me first and also have great love for money. " 00:41:35.77\00:41:38.86 It's not going to work. 00:41:38.89\00:41:39.86 The devil doesn't yet understand that. 00:41:39.87\00:41:42.53 And so he's going to use money, and the economy 00:41:43.23\00:41:45.69 and the control of it, to try to force men and women into 00:41:45.72\00:41:49.78 a mold that they otherwise would not choose to be in. 00:41:49.81\00:41:53.80 He can't believe that there can be some with characters so 00:41:53.83\00:41:58.31 sterling that they can't be bought or sold. 00:41:58.34\00:42:00.36 My favorite writer outside the Bible put it in these words, 00:42:00.39\00:42:03.56 "The greatest want of the world is the want of men. 00:42:03.59\00:42:07.43 Men who's conscience is as true to duty as is the 00:42:07.46\00:42:10.44 needle to the pole. 00:42:10.47\00:42:11.51 Men who will not be bought or sold though the heavens fall. " 00:42:11.54\00:42:16.53 Worldwide implications. 00:42:19.47\00:42:21.41 I recently made a trip again to Europe. 00:42:24.84\00:42:28.17 And I discovered that over in Europe, even though their 00:42:29.26\00:42:32.15 euro dollar is now very strong in comparison to ours, 00:42:32.18\00:42:35.14 worth about 40% more than our dollar. 00:42:35.17\00:42:38.09 Oh, and by the way, that brings to my mind another thought. 00:42:38.12\00:42:41.17 Did you know that many, many of the major companies that 00:42:41.20\00:42:44.58 do business with us, whether they sell us oil 00:42:44.61\00:42:48.30 or they sell us some other commodity, refrigerators 00:42:48.33\00:42:50.59 or Toyota's, they're not wanting payment in American dollars? 00:42:50.62\00:42:55.22 Because as soon as they take the American dollars, 00:42:55.25\00:42:57.38 they are taking a 40% discount. 00:42:57.41\00:42:59.98 And so they want us to trade our money with the euro dollar 00:43:00.01\00:43:03.63 or with the Japanese yen. 00:43:03.66\00:43:05.43 And some of them are even willing to take the Mexican peso 00:43:05.46\00:43:09.44 in exchange for, rather than, the U.S. dollar. 00:43:09.47\00:43:15.02 Strange situation we've come to, but one that God said 00:43:15.05\00:43:18.14 would happen just before Jesus comes back again. 00:43:18.17\00:43:21.26 And so I've noticed that the problems that we're facing here 00:43:21.91\00:43:25.16 in terms of the economy, the housing market just one example, 00:43:25.19\00:43:29.50 is much greater over in England. 00:43:29.53\00:43:32.48 Much greater than here. 00:43:32.51\00:43:34.41 Here in the United States, we send out to our kids, 00:43:34.44\00:43:38.56 college kids, and oh, even in the last few months, 00:43:38.59\00:43:41.87 they've been sending credit cards, unsolicited, unasked for, 00:43:41.90\00:43:45.65 to eight graders. 00:43:45.68\00:43:46.65 Did you know that? 00:43:46.68\00:43:47.67 Yea, eight grader opens his mail and there's a credit card. 00:43:47.70\00:43:51.28 And so he runs down and buys him a $100 worth of gum. 00:43:51.31\00:43:55.04 So strange, really it is. 00:43:56.67\00:43:59.67 But we have made credit available. 00:43:59.70\00:44:02.72 We have said, "Here, use it, enjoy it, live it up. " 00:44:02.75\00:44:06.10 "Oh, and if you'll take the credit that you have on 00:44:07.41\00:44:10.11 your other card," says this big company, "if you'll transfer 00:44:10.14\00:44:13.54 that credit over to our card, we will give to you 00:44:13.57\00:44:17.28 no interest for 3 months. 00:44:17.31\00:44:18.62 And after the 3 months, we will only charge you 00:44:18.65\00:44:21.33 for the next 6 months, 4% or 5%." 00:44:21.36\00:44:24.65 And we fail to read the small print, ladies and gentlemen. 00:44:24.68\00:44:28.44 And now we're discovering that when you read the small print, 00:44:28.47\00:44:31.65 they have an ability that if your payment is late 00:44:31.68\00:44:35.33 by 1/2 hour, oh and if it says that your payment is due 00:44:35.36\00:44:40.83 on the 30th of the month, and you mail your letter 00:44:40.86\00:44:44.81 and it gets there by the 30th of the month, 00:44:44.84\00:44:47.48 it is still considered to be late. 00:44:47.51\00:44:49.48 And now the interest rate goes from 5% or 4% up to 28%. 00:44:49.51\00:44:56.57 And then they add late fees that can bring the interest rate up 00:44:56.60\00:45:00.07 to as high as 40%. 00:45:00.10\00:45:02.85 And then they begin to add the interest to it, 00:45:02.88\00:45:06.29 it begins to compound daily, and before very long 00:45:06.32\00:45:10.10 you're in debt up beyond your eyeballs, 00:45:10.13\00:45:12.75 and they're going to take away your home. 00:45:12.78\00:45:14.59 And so, the housing market has been collapsing. 00:45:14.62\00:45:17.15 Have you noticed that in your area? 00:45:17.18\00:45:18.65 My home town is Boise, Idaho. 00:45:18.68\00:45:20.54 My daughter happens to have a home in Boise, Idaho 00:45:20.57\00:45:23.68 that she's been attempting to sell for about the last 2 years. 00:45:23.71\00:45:28.28 They began, and because it's a lovely home, 00:45:28.31\00:45:30.54 and I've seen some very lovely homes around here, 00:45:30.57\00:45:33.59 it was a home that was appraised at around $400,000. 00:45:33.62\00:45:37.74 And so they thought they would start maybe just a little bit 00:45:37.77\00:45:39.87 above the appraisal. 00:45:39.90\00:45:41.09 And nothing happened, no one even came to look. 00:45:41.12\00:45:43.74 And so they dropped the price about $25,000. 00:45:43.77\00:45:46.29 And nobody came to look. 00:45:46.32\00:45:47.86 And so they dropped the price again another $25,000. 00:45:47.89\00:45:51.03 And one person came to look. 00:45:51.06\00:45:53.02 And they dropped the price again and nobody has been to look 00:45:53.05\00:45:57.17 in the last 3 months. 00:45:57.20\00:45:58.77 They had changed realtors on three different occasions. 00:45:58.80\00:46:02.83 And finally, my daughter confronted the last one 00:46:02.86\00:46:05.43 and asked him, "Sir, why aren't you doing anything?" 00:46:05.46\00:46:08.75 And he said to my daughter, "Lady, it's obvious that you 00:46:08.78\00:46:11.66 don't understand. " 00:46:11.69\00:46:13.11 Here in this little community of Eagle, Idaho, 00:46:13.14\00:46:16.18 which has a population smaller still than your city, 00:46:16.23\00:46:19.98 here in Eagle, this suburb of Boise, there are 1200 homes 00:46:20.01\00:46:28.13 on the market. 00:46:28.16\00:46:29.48 1200 homes that are for sale. 00:46:29.51\00:46:32.12 And in greater Boise, the number is up near 100,000. 00:46:32.15\00:46:37.19 And the banks are wondering what to do, what are we going to do? 00:46:37.92\00:46:42.56 And so the Federal Reserve... 00:46:42.59\00:46:44.88 And this, let's see if I can't find it here. 00:46:44.91\00:46:48.46 The Federal Reserve Chairman spoke yesterday. 00:46:48.49\00:46:51.20 Well, it doesn't matter. 00:46:52.15\00:46:54.20 But Neil Cavuto asked him, "What are you going to do?" 00:46:54.60\00:46:56.94 He said, "We're going to lower the interest rate. " 00:46:56.97\00:46:58.86 Neil Cavuto asked, "How do you do that?" 00:46:58.89\00:47:00.68 He said, "We're going to print more money. " 00:47:00.71\00:47:02.76 And Neil said, "I thought that's exactly your answer. " 00:47:02.79\00:47:05.31 Now he said, "Who is going to stand behind the money?" 00:47:05.34\00:47:08.65 Because it's practically hot air. 00:47:08.68\00:47:10.89 Who's going to stand behind the money? 00:47:10.92\00:47:12.53 And the Chairman of the Federal Reserve said, "Probably China. " 00:47:12.56\00:47:18.73 Ladies and gentlemen, Japan and China own 00:47:18.76\00:47:21.66 much of the United States. 00:47:21.69\00:47:23.28 In 10 years, the United States has moved from a position of 00:47:24.17\00:47:27.23 being the largest creditor to being the largest debtor nation 00:47:27.26\00:47:31.80 in all this world. 00:47:31.83\00:47:34.26 In other words, 10 years ago, more countries owed us money 00:47:34.29\00:47:37.93 than was owed to any one other single country. 00:47:37.96\00:47:41.48 We indeed, were the wealthy Americans. 00:47:41.51\00:47:43.86 And now, my dears, we owe more money to more countries 00:47:43.89\00:47:48.02 than does any other single nation, including those 00:47:48.05\00:47:51.91 impoverished third nations of the world 00:47:51.94\00:47:55.00 that are so deeply, deeply in debt. 00:47:55.03\00:47:57.04 And the amount is mushrooming. 00:47:57.44\00:47:59.44 You know what happens to interest that is compounded, 00:47:59.47\00:48:01.85 then super compounded? 00:48:01.88\00:48:03.30 And it was the former Chairman of the Chrysler Motor Company, 00:48:03.33\00:48:07.16 Lee Iacocca, who was quoted very recently as saying, 00:48:07.19\00:48:10.02 "We need now to face the facts, it is a reality. 00:48:10.05\00:48:13.15 We will never, never be able to pay the interest 00:48:13.18\00:48:17.39 on the national debt. " 00:48:17.42\00:48:19.51 And then he went on to conclude, "It is a bitter legacy 00:48:20.11\00:48:23.37 that we have left to our children 00:48:23.40\00:48:25.47 and to our grandchildren. " 00:48:25.50\00:48:27.58 Here's something that came from the news magazine 00:48:27.61\00:48:29.59 just about 4 days ago. 00:48:29.62\00:48:31.32 The stock market, as you're probably aware, has dropped 00:48:32.29\00:48:34.65 again today, about 300 points. 00:48:34.68\00:48:36.68 We've gone, in about a month and a half, from somewhere around 00:48:37.20\00:48:40.10 14,000 to 12, and sometimes a little less than that. 00:48:40.13\00:48:44.59 Then it asks, "Are we living in a '9/10' economy? 00:48:44.62\00:48:48.78 Global financial markets were rocked last month, following 00:48:49.54\00:48:53.26 rising defaults affecting mortgage-backed securities. 00:48:53.29\00:48:57.92 What does this mean for the world's money supply 00:48:57.95\00:49:00.48 and for confidence in the Western financial institutions? 00:49:00.51\00:49:03.76 Are we on the verge of a major upheaval and a collapse 00:49:03.79\00:49:07.79 of the world economy?" 00:49:07.82\00:49:09.24 Well my dears, the Bible says the answer 00:49:09.27\00:49:11.90 to that question is, "Yes. " 00:49:11.93\00:49:14.10 Yes, indeed. 00:49:14.13\00:49:15.13 By the way, if you folks want some information 00:49:15.16\00:49:18.58 that is brand new and updated and trustworthy, 00:49:18.61\00:49:21.92 you'll find it here in this issue of "In These Times". 00:49:21.95\00:49:25.38 "Killer Credit" 00:49:25.41\00:49:26.60 It'll just, it'll shock you. 00:49:26.63\00:49:28.97 I'm rather sure that it will. 00:49:29.00\00:49:31.16 What is the national debt? 00:49:34.35\00:49:35.76 When you and I had meetings like these here 8 years ago, was it? 00:49:35.79\00:49:40.86 Eight years ago, the national debt was around 00:49:40.89\00:49:46.51 5 trillion dollars. 00:49:46.54\00:49:48.37 But yesterday, I spent most all of the afternoon at the library 00:49:49.42\00:49:53.19 doing some research. 00:49:53.22\00:49:54.79 And I found a quotation. 00:49:55.52\00:49:57.29 I want to read it to you, and then you'll be able probably to 00:49:57.32\00:49:59.93 tell me who said it, who made it, and when. 00:49:59.96\00:50:02.20 Listen now. 00:50:02.23\00:50:03.41 "The budget should be balanced. 00:50:03.54\00:50:06.18 The treasury should be refilled. 00:50:07.41\00:50:10.36 The public debt should be reduced. 00:50:11.41\00:50:14.39 And the arrogance of public officials 00:50:15.10\00:50:17.24 should be controlled. " 00:52:42.90\00:52:46.11 Federal deposit insurance. 00:52:46.91\00:52:48.54 You know, we have the mistaken idea, somehow, that the 00:52:48.57\00:52:50.76 FDIC is a government outfit. 00:52:50.79\00:52:53.27 That we vote someone in there and they take charge. 00:52:53.30\00:52:56.20 No, not at all. 00:52:56.23\00:52:57.47 Not anywhere near it. 00:52:57.50\00:52:58.62 The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation... 00:52:58.65\00:53:00.77 I'm sorry, I misspoke. The Federal Reserve. 00:53:00.80\00:53:03.21 The Federal Reserve is not owned and operated by the government. 00:53:03.24\00:53:07.43 We don't vote anyone into office. 00:53:07.46\00:53:09.54 But rather, it is made up of about a dozen of the 00:53:09.57\00:53:12.28 wealthiest men in the world. 00:53:12.31\00:53:13.98 And they're the ones that are loaning the money. 00:53:14.01\00:53:15.83 And they're the ones that are getting the big returns. 00:53:15.86\00:53:17.99 And they're the ones that are getting into our back pockets 00:53:18.02\00:53:20.27 and stealing from us. 00:53:20.30\00:53:21.61 Printing more money and passing on the debt to other countries. 00:53:22.31\00:53:25.20 You buy it from us, some day we'll pay you back. 00:53:25.23\00:53:27.71 And now we're going to, as we conclude, see that these things 00:53:29.25\00:53:31.63 are all related to the end time events. 00:53:31.66\00:53:34.83 That God knew what was going to happen and He knew what would 00:53:35.13\00:53:38.30 bring about this economic dictatorship. 00:53:38.33\00:53:40.61 I'm going to share with very quickly now, as we move 00:53:42.76\00:53:44.53 toward a conclusion, what has put us 00:53:44.56\00:53:46.83 in this financial difficulty. 00:53:46.86\00:53:49.59 The cost of illegal's coming across our borders, 00:53:51.37\00:53:54.01 both North and South, are costing us multiplied 00:53:54.04\00:53:58.18 millions of dollars every single day. 00:53:58.21\00:54:02.25 Now please understand, Lyle is not a racist of any kind. 00:54:02.28\00:54:05.41 If I know my own heart, I know better than that. 00:54:05.44\00:54:07.99 And then, we have these natural disasters. 00:54:08.02\00:54:10.84 We've had Katrina, and right on top of it, Rita. 00:54:10.87\00:54:13.86 And it has cost our government billions and billions 00:54:13.89\00:54:16.45 and billions of dollars. 00:54:16.48\00:54:17.58 And then we have the welfare roles. 00:54:17.61\00:54:19.83 We have the folks that are being paid not to work. 00:54:19.86\00:54:23.89 And some of them would work, and perhaps, ought to work. 00:54:23.92\00:54:27.82 Down in the Southland not too long ago, a guy said to me, 00:54:27.85\00:54:30.19 "You know, they're lots of folks down here in the South 00:54:30.22\00:54:32.11 that wouldn't work if you gave them a job 00:54:32.14\00:54:34.33 in a doughnut factory. " 00:54:34.53\00:54:36.17 Now I guess that's a pretty good job, I don't know. 00:54:36.20\00:54:39.05 Then we have also a war raging out in the Middle East. 00:54:39.08\00:54:41.98 And that war in the Middle East, it's costing you peoples 00:54:42.01\00:54:45.43 of the United States $10 billion every single month. 00:54:45.47\00:54:48.94 And then we have earthquakes. 00:54:48.97\00:54:50.42 And we dip into our pockets, and all we Americans are fine 00:54:50.45\00:54:54.02 to help the folk who are in the earthquake. 00:54:54.05\00:54:56.12 And then we have the fires that burn down the most expensive 00:54:56.15\00:54:59.28 neighborhoods in Malibu and elsewhere. 00:54:59.31\00:55:01.63 And they give them loans that are backed by the government. 00:55:01.66\00:55:05.14 And free money besides that. 00:55:05.17\00:55:07.03 And we poor folks who live out here in Middle America, 00:55:07.06\00:55:09.44 we're paying the bill. 00:55:09.47\00:55:10.84 And then, we have medical care. 00:55:10.87\00:55:12.88 It is considered that within 5 years, 25% of the 00:55:12.91\00:55:16.36 national budget is going to go to medical costs. 00:55:16.39\00:55:19.89 Then we have the Homeland Security problem 00:55:21.13\00:55:24.49 with surveillance, and we have border fences and border police, 00:55:24.52\00:55:29.19 that are costing us increasingly. 00:55:29.22\00:55:31.00 And we then have these horrors of the annual income 00:55:31.03\00:55:38.66 that drops and drops in comparison to inflation 00:55:38.69\00:55:41.16 and deflation and stagflation. 00:55:41.19\00:55:43.13 And some have said to me, "Well really, we're better off 00:55:43.16\00:55:45.51 than we were than when I was a kid. " 00:55:45.54\00:55:46.83 Well, I've looked into that and I found that it's not true. 00:55:46.86\00:55:49.75 In 1942, and that by the way, was the year that some 00:55:49.78\00:55:53.18 really, really fine people were born. 00:55:53.21\00:55:56.08 Now again, this isn't the history of civilization, folks. 00:55:59.74\00:56:02.61 In 1942, the annual income was $1800 per year 00:56:03.09\00:56:06.70 and a new home cost $3000. 00:56:06.73\00:56:10.25 You earn in 2 years, enough money to pay off your home. 00:56:11.18\00:56:14.13 In 1960, gasoline cost 25 cents a gallon. 00:56:14.16\00:56:18.17 It meant, if you worked for one hour at the minimum wage 00:56:19.47\00:56:23.06 of $2 per hour, you could buy 8 gallons of gas today. 00:56:23.16\00:56:25.45 Can you buy 8 gallons of gas today with an hour's wage? 00:56:25.48\00:56:27.82 Huh? I don't think so. 00:56:27.85\00:56:29.54 I don't think so. 00:56:29.94\00:56:30.91 Our Lord has to come, folks. 00:56:31.21\00:56:33.20 Our Lord has to come. 00:56:33.90\00:56:35.51 There's going to soon come a collapse. 00:56:35.54\00:56:37.32 It might be the Twin Tower picture all over again. 00:56:37.35\00:56:40.79 It might be something in Los Angeles. 00:56:40.82\00:56:43.13 It might be a natural disaster. 00:56:43.16\00:56:45.89 But it is going to demand somebody to come along 00:56:45.92\00:56:48.06 to take the reins in hand. 00:56:48.09\00:56:49.53 You know, the American people traditionally have been 00:56:49.56\00:56:51.79 taught to say, "Dictatorship horrors, never. 00:56:51.82\00:56:54.48 Not here in the land of the free. " 00:56:54.51\00:56:56.24 But one day soon they're going to say, 00:56:56.27\00:56:58.56 "Thank God, finally someone has come along with enough guts 00:56:58.59\00:57:01.99 to put on the brakes. Thank God. " 00:57:02.02\00:57:05.00 "And no man could buy or sell. " 00:57:08.05\00:57:10.21 Now is the time to make the spiritual preparation. 00:57:10.97\00:57:13.64 Now is the time. 00:57:13.67\00:57:15.42 Lay not up for yourselves treasures on earth. 00:57:15.45\00:57:17.77 Rather, put your treasure in the bank of heaven. 00:57:17.80\00:57:22.07 Let's pray. 00:57:22.10\00:57:23.17 We thank You Lord, for the promise of Your word, 00:57:23.20\00:57:25.71 "I'll be with you to the end. 00:57:25.74\00:57:27.72 I'll never allow My children to go hungry or 00:57:29.22\00:57:31.43 see their seed begging bread. 00:57:31.46\00:57:33.10 Your bread and your water will be sure. 00:57:33.13\00:57:35.51 My grace is sufficient. " 00:57:35.54\00:57:37.63 Dear God help us, like Abraham, to set our sights 00:57:37.66\00:57:40.89 on things that are eternal. 00:57:40.92\00:57:42.47 And not to worry at all about having the 00:57:42.87\00:57:44.92 finest things here and now. 00:57:44.95\00:57:46.78 But to be very concerned about the hereafter. 00:57:48.02\00:57:52.42 May we long anxiously for the coming of Jesus. 00:57:52.82\00:57:56.07 Oh, to look in His face. 00:57:56.10\00:57:57.67 That'll be glory. In Jesus' name, amen. 00:57:58.93\00:58:03.58
