Welcome again to our program, 00:00:23.87\00:00:27.46 "Revelation of the Coming King." 00:00:27.49\00:00:32.80 I'm glad to be with you here again 00:00:32.83\00:00:35.04 and my name is Ranko Stefanovic. 00:00:35.07\00:00:38.34 I'm Professor of New Testament in the Seventh-day Adventist 00:00:38.37\00:00:42.55 Theological Seminary, Andrews University. 00:00:42.58\00:00:45.96 The courses that I teach there 00:00:45.99\00:00:47.37 at Andrews are New Testament courses 00:00:47.40\00:00:50.45 even though my cognate is the Old Testament. 00:00:50.48\00:00:53.77 So I believe that we should be student of the Bible, 00:00:53.80\00:00:56.10 not just a part of the Bible. 00:00:56.13\00:01:00.06 As you know that this series is about the Book of Revelation. 00:01:00.09\00:01:05.48 We are trying to cover the entire book 00:01:05.51\00:01:07.86 from Chapter 1 to Chapter 22. 00:01:07.89\00:01:12.15 In our last presentation, 00:01:12.18\00:01:13.55 we tried to understand who are those-- 00:01:13.58\00:01:16.59 about those who will be able to stand on that day, 00:01:16.62\00:01:21.56 a great day of the wrath of God. 00:01:21.59\00:01:24.96 And the answer is 144,000. 00:01:24.99\00:01:27.70 I hope that you found the topic very enjoying. 00:01:27.73\00:01:30.80 But now we're coming, probably, 00:01:30.83\00:01:32.89 to the most difficult portion of the Book of Revelation. 00:01:32.92\00:01:38.95 And the Christians have been fighting 00:01:38.98\00:01:41.16 to find the meaning, the different opinions. 00:01:41.19\00:01:44.49 And once again we will try to go to the biblical principle, 00:01:44.52\00:01:48.19 let the Bible tell us 00:01:48.22\00:01:50.74 what that vision of seven trumpets is all about. 00:01:50.77\00:01:57.48 But in dealing with that subject, 00:01:57.51\00:01:58.96 we need the divine wisdom 00:01:58.99\00:02:01.54 and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. 00:02:01.57\00:02:03.28 So I would like to ask you that we bow our heads 00:02:03.31\00:02:06.39 and ask God for His favor and His presence. 00:02:06.42\00:02:10.37 Our Heavenly Father, once again we are here 00:02:10.40\00:02:14.97 coming before you as we want to go and try to understand 00:02:15.00\00:02:21.47 these two chapters of the Book of Revelation 00:02:21.50\00:02:24.80 about seven trumpets, please be with us. 00:02:24.83\00:02:29.52 Give us that clear understanding 00:02:29.55\00:02:33.50 but that's why we need your Holy Spirit. 00:02:33.53\00:02:36.18 Let Him teach us in all the truth. 00:02:36.21\00:02:39.97 And, Father, we're grateful to You for everything, 00:02:40.00\00:02:43.57 what You're doing for us. 00:02:43.60\00:02:44.97 And we pray all of this in the precious name 00:02:45.00\00:02:47.86 of our Savior, Jesus Christ, amen. 00:02:47.89\00:02:53.76 As we do it normally before we go to the text, 00:02:53.79\00:02:59.65 I'd like to encourage you again that 00:02:59.68\00:03:01.56 once this presentation is over 00:03:01.59\00:03:04.43 that you take different tools. 00:03:04.46\00:03:07.38 Of course, the Bible is our primary tool. 00:03:07.41\00:03:10.77 And you'll see when you follow, okay, 00:03:10.80\00:03:13.02 the instructions here, and you use these tools, 00:03:13.05\00:03:15.55 you cannot be far away from understanding of the text. 00:03:15.58\00:03:19.12 But we need also some other tools. 00:03:19.15\00:03:22.28 That literally-- really point 00:03:22.31\00:03:24.96 to those different Old Testament backgrounds. 00:03:24.99\00:03:28.61 So I would like to suggest to you 00:03:28.64\00:03:30.90 this book titled "Revelation of Jesus Christ." 00:03:30.93\00:03:34.77 It's verse by verse commentary on the Book of Revelation. 00:03:34.80\00:03:39.65 But the main purpose of this book 00:03:39.68\00:03:41.87 really to give you those Old Testament 00:03:41.90\00:03:45.21 and New Testament background texts 00:03:45.24\00:03:47.48 for the understanding of the Book of Revelation. 00:03:47.51\00:03:49.91 And the subject that we are covering today, 00:03:49.94\00:03:53.69 it's Revelation 8 and 9 in next two presentations, 00:03:53.72\00:03:57.70 this presentation, next presentation. 00:03:57.73\00:03:59.77 Actually, the subject is covered here 00:03:59.80\00:04:01.55 in this commentary from page 281--281. 00:04:01.58\00:04:07.98 And you go on until we finish chapter 9, okay? 00:04:08.01\00:04:12.49 Let us now turn to Revelation Chapter 8. 00:04:12.52\00:04:16.88 And I would like us to read verse 2 of this chapter. 00:04:16.91\00:04:23.20 We read before verse 1, about the silence in heaven. 00:04:23.23\00:04:27.91 We saw what that silence was about. 00:04:27.94\00:04:30.50 And now John said, we have the beginning, 00:04:30.53\00:04:32.52 a beginning of a new vision. 00:04:32.55\00:04:34.22 It says, "And I saw the seven angels 00:04:34.25\00:04:37.42 who stand before God, 00:04:37.45\00:04:39.68 and seven trumpets were given to them." 00:04:39.71\00:04:45.10 So when we read in the rest of these two chapters 00:04:45.13\00:04:49.39 we will see about that later that they're actually, 00:04:49.42\00:04:52.12 those seven angels are blowing the trumpets. 00:04:52.15\00:04:55.48 Every time when they blow the trumpets 00:04:55.51\00:04:59.16 or when angel blows his trumpet and another angel-- 00:04:59.19\00:05:02.47 you know, one after another, 00:05:02.50\00:05:05.27 the events taking place on the earth. 00:05:05.30\00:05:08.14 So before we go into the subject, 00:05:08.17\00:05:10.27 we'd like ask ourselves the question, 00:05:10.30\00:05:14.04 what are these trumpets all about? 00:05:14.07\00:05:17.93 You see, we can express different opinions 00:05:17.96\00:05:21.14 and have a very good guess 00:05:21.17\00:05:22.78 about the meaning of these trumpets. 00:05:22.81\00:05:25.70 But in the Old Testament, the concept 00:05:25.73\00:05:29.23 "the blowing of the trumpets" 00:05:29.26\00:05:31.42 was well known in ancient Israel. 00:05:31.45\00:05:34.51 Actually, the entire life of the people of Israel 00:05:34.54\00:05:40.01 was defined by the blowing of the trumpets. 00:05:40.04\00:05:43.08 Whatever they did, 00:05:43.11\00:05:45.51 it was on signal of the trumpets. 00:05:45.54\00:05:48.58 Let me just provide few insights here. 00:05:48.61\00:05:51.97 There are several Hebrew words for trumpets 00:05:52.00\00:05:55.86 that we translate in English. 00:05:55.89\00:06:00.22 There's kind of trumpets that were made of hammered metal. 00:06:00.25\00:06:05.41 They were regularly blown by the priests 00:06:05.44\00:06:08.56 to summon people to announce those different festivals, 00:06:08.59\00:06:12.38 it was an alarm, the time of war, 00:06:12.41\00:06:16.55 signal for temple services, et cetera, et cetera. 00:06:16.58\00:06:20.26 The metal, okay, trumpets. 00:06:20.29\00:06:23.03 However, the best known trumpets 00:06:23.06\00:06:24.98 in ancient Israel were the shofar trumpets. 00:06:25.01\00:06:30.21 They were made, okay, of ram's horns 00:06:30.24\00:06:34.32 and they're used as signaling instruments. 00:06:34.35\00:06:38.20 Actually, evidently, 00:06:38.23\00:06:40.11 this is the concept of the trumpets 00:06:40.14\00:06:42.49 that is used here in Revelation 8 and 9. 00:06:42.52\00:06:45.00 But what is the meaning of the trumpets? 00:06:45.03\00:06:48.68 What does the blowing of trumpets actually means? 00:06:48.71\00:06:50.47 You see, again we've to go to the Old Testament. 00:06:50.50\00:06:52.93 You remember, the first step 00:06:52.96\00:06:54.33 is always to go to the Old Testament. 00:06:54.36\00:06:56.56 And I'd like to invite you 00:06:56.59\00:06:58.90 to open the Book of Numbers, Chapter 10. 00:06:58.93\00:07:05.23 The entire chapter actually, is the instruction 00:07:08.63\00:07:12.93 that God gave through Moses to the people of Israel 00:07:12.96\00:07:16.71 with reference to the trumpets, 00:07:16.79\00:07:18.58 but we will specifically focus on verses 8 to 10, 00:07:18.61\00:07:24.60 because these verses provide for the background 00:07:24.63\00:07:27.85 for the understanding of the seven trumpets 00:07:27.88\00:07:30.09 in the Book of Revelation. Are you ready there? 00:07:30.12\00:07:32.54 One more time, the Book of Numbers 10:8-10. 00:07:32.57\00:07:38.10 It says, "The priestly sons of Aaron, 00:07:38.13\00:07:42.75 moreover, shall blow the trumpets, 00:07:42.78\00:07:45.78 and this shall be for you 00:07:45.81\00:07:47.23 a perpetual statute throughout your generations." 00:07:47.26\00:07:50.95 Can I stop here for a while? Can you help me? 00:07:50.98\00:07:52.97 Who was in charge of the trumpets 00:07:53.00\00:07:56.30 in ancient Israel? The priest. 00:07:56.33\00:08:00.59 If the priest were in charge of blowing the trumpets, 00:08:00.62\00:08:03.79 what does it suggest to us? 00:08:03.82\00:08:06.04 That actually the trumpets were sacred instruments, okay? 00:08:06.07\00:08:11.02 Let us keep this in mind. Let's go to next text. 00:08:11.05\00:08:13.94 "When you go to war in your land 00:08:13.97\00:08:16.34 against the adversary who attacks you, 00:08:16.37\00:08:19.82 then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets, 00:08:19.85\00:08:23.61 that you may be remembered before the Lord your God, 00:08:23.64\00:08:27.65 and be saved from your enemies. 00:08:27.68\00:08:30.93 Also in the day of your gladness 00:08:30.96\00:08:34.09 and in your appointed feasts, 00:08:34.12\00:08:36.84 and on the first days of your months, 00:08:36.87\00:08:39.73 you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings, 00:08:39.76\00:08:43.89 and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings, 00:08:43.92\00:08:47.76 and they shall be as a reminder of you before your God. 00:08:47.79\00:08:53.30 I am the Lord, your God." 00:08:53.33\00:08:59.35 Actually, this is the key Old Testament text 00:08:59.38\00:09:04.24 that gives us the insight into the theological meaning 00:09:04.27\00:09:08.11 of the seven trumpets of Revelation Chapters 8 and 9. 00:09:08.14\00:09:13.23 What do we learn from these texts? 00:09:13.26\00:09:16.50 So trumpets are sacred instruments 00:09:16.53\00:09:18.24 blown by priests. Okay. 00:09:18.27\00:09:22.68 Why were they blown? For number of reasons. 00:09:22.71\00:09:26.65 And please I will use a kind of naive explanation here 00:09:26.68\00:09:30.75 just to illustrate, because this concept is here. 00:09:30.78\00:09:35.11 You see they were intended 00:09:35.14\00:09:39.94 to call God to remember His people. 00:09:39.97\00:09:44.89 Does it mean that God does not remember His people? 00:09:44.92\00:09:47.17 But you notice here that this concept is here in the text. 00:09:47.20\00:09:50.70 Let me go back. It's verse 9 in Book of Numbers. 00:09:50.73\00:09:55.44 "You shall sound the alarm with the trumpets 00:09:55.47\00:09:57.59 that you may be remembered before the Lord your God." 00:09:57.62\00:10:02.02 And also verse 10. 00:10:02.05\00:10:03.43 "Also in the day of your gladness, 00:10:03.46\00:10:05.08 in your appointed feasts, on the first of your months, 00:10:05.11\00:10:07.71 you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings, 00:10:07.74\00:10:10.59 and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings, 00:10:10.62\00:10:13.08 and they shall be a reminder of you before God." 00:10:13.11\00:10:17.09 So this served to remind God 00:10:17.12\00:10:19.92 of His covenant promises to His people. 00:10:19.95\00:10:23.57 What does it mean? 00:10:23.60\00:10:25.02 When people came to worship God, 00:10:25.05\00:10:28.45 they would offer the sacrifices. 00:10:28.48\00:10:31.77 At that moment, as the sacrifices were offered, 00:10:31.80\00:10:35.23 the priests would take and blow the trumpets. 00:10:35.26\00:10:39.00 And suddenly, I told you in naive way. 00:10:39.03\00:10:43.21 Suddenly, as the priests blow the trumpets, 00:10:43.24\00:10:45.74 God remembers His people. 00:10:45.77\00:10:48.50 And He forgives their sins 00:10:48.53\00:10:51.65 or people go there to war. 00:10:51.68\00:10:56.45 And evidently they are overwhelmed, 00:10:56.48\00:10:58.35 almost defeated by their enemies. 00:10:58.38\00:11:00.61 And at that moment the priests blow the trumpets 00:11:00.64\00:11:05.42 and God looks there from heaven, 00:11:05.45\00:11:06.97 He said, "Oh, my people are there in the trouble." 00:11:07.00\00:11:10.97 He remembers His people and His covenant promises 00:11:11.00\00:11:13.54 to protect them and He comes 00:11:13.57\00:11:15.40 and delivers them from their enemies. 00:11:15.43\00:11:19.19 I know you will say 00:11:19.22\00:11:20.59 this is just a story for children. 00:11:20.62\00:11:21.99 But please, would you go with me 00:11:22.02\00:11:23.81 to another Old Testament text? 00:11:23.84\00:11:26.21 2 Chronicles, Chapter 13. 00:11:26.24\00:11:29.64 We have actually-- the real event, okay, 00:11:29.67\00:11:35.20 that illustrates this statement 00:11:35.23\00:11:38.79 that God remembers His people from Numbers 10:8-10. 00:11:38.83\00:11:45.76 Are you there? 2 Chronicles 13:12-15. 00:11:45.79\00:11:53.11 He talks about the war between the Northern 00:11:53.14\00:11:56.82 and the Southern kingdom of Israel. 00:11:56.85\00:11:58.40 It says, "Now behold, God is with us at your head 00:11:58.43\00:12:04.03 and his priests with the signal trumpets 00:12:04.06\00:12:06.68 to sound the alarm against you." 00:12:06.71\00:12:08.68 Is the king actually trying to encourage people. 00:12:08.71\00:12:10.55 He said, "Don't be afraid. 00:12:10.59\00:12:11.96 The priests with the trumpets are here with us." 00:12:11.99\00:12:15.49 "O sons of Israel, do not fight 00:12:15.52\00:12:18.30 against the Lord God of your Fathers, 00:12:18.33\00:12:21.63 for you will not succeed." 00:12:21.66\00:12:24.76 Now we go to verse 13, "But Jeroboam has set 00:12:24.79\00:12:28.72 an ambush to come from the rear, 00:12:28.75\00:12:32.45 so that Israel was in front of Judah 00:12:32.48\00:12:35.31 and the ambush was behind them. 00:12:35.34\00:12:38.38 When Judah turned around, behold, 00:12:38.41\00:12:41.16 they were attacked from front and rear, 00:12:41.19\00:12:44.99 so they cried to the Lord." Now look at something. 00:12:45.02\00:12:47.91 "They cried to the Lord 00:12:47.94\00:12:49.82 and the priests blew the trumpets." 00:12:49.85\00:12:53.72 What happens next? 00:12:53.75\00:12:55.12 "Then the men of Judah raised a war cry, 00:12:55.15\00:12:57.84 and when the men of Judah raised the war cry, 00:12:57.87\00:13:00.91 then it was that God routed Jeroboam 00:13:00.94\00:13:04.70 and all Israel before Abijah and Judah." 00:13:04.73\00:13:07.59 Do you see the practical illustration of this? 00:13:07.62\00:13:10.61 The people of Israel were there in the trouble, 00:13:10.64\00:13:14.47 almost defeated by their enemies. 00:13:14.50\00:13:16.18 What did they do? 00:13:16.21\00:13:19.28 I'd like you to pay something very, very important is. 00:13:19.31\00:13:22.91 Because it's not just about the blowing of the trumpets. 00:13:22.94\00:13:26.92 It says that the priests blew the trumpets. 00:13:30.00\00:13:36.12 What the people do? 00:13:36.15\00:13:37.72 They shouted, they cried to their Lord. 00:13:37.75\00:13:43.57 You see, the trumpets 00:13:43.60\00:13:46.45 and the prayers of God's people, they go together. 00:13:46.48\00:13:51.30 It's not simply about blowing of the trumpets. 00:13:51.33\00:13:54.32 I will suggest to you that actually 00:13:54.44\00:13:55.84 the blowing of the trumpets 00:13:55.87\00:13:57.68 was a call to people to pray to God. 00:13:57.71\00:14:01.89 And when the trumpets sounded people prayed, 00:14:01.92\00:14:05.06 then God remembered His promises to be with His people 00:14:05.09\00:14:09.05 and He came to deliver them. 00:14:09.08\00:14:13.73 By the way when you to go the Old Testament, 00:14:13.76\00:14:15.79 trumpets are associated with very important events 00:14:15.82\00:14:19.53 in the Old Testament history. 00:14:19.56\00:14:21.44 When the law was given from Sinai, 00:14:21.47\00:14:24.08 the sound of the trumpet. 00:14:24.11\00:14:25.95 When Jericho was destroyed, you remember that? Trumpet. 00:14:25.98\00:14:30.54 By the way, when we read the prophetic books, 00:14:30.57\00:14:34.18 it is the sound of the trumpet 00:14:34.21\00:14:36.17 that the day of the Lord will come. 00:14:36.20\00:14:38.52 In the New Testament, Apostle Paul talks 00:14:38.55\00:14:41.41 in 1 Corinthians Chapter 15, 00:14:41.44\00:14:43.61 he talks in 2 Thessalonians Chapter 4 00:14:43.64\00:14:46.15 that Jesus will come at the sound of the trumpet 00:14:46.18\00:14:49.09 and the sound of the trumpet, 00:14:49.12\00:14:50.49 there will be the resurrection of dead. 00:14:50.52\00:14:52.45 So you see, the concept 00:14:52.48\00:14:53.85 of the sounding trumpet is well known concept. 00:14:53.88\00:14:56.82 But let us keep this Old Testament background, 00:14:56.85\00:15:00.30 the trumpets and the prayers, they go together. 00:15:00.33\00:15:04.81 When people pray, when the trumpets sound, 00:15:04.84\00:15:08.28 then God remembers His people praying to Him. 00:15:08.31\00:15:11.68 Are you still with me? 00:15:11.71\00:15:13.08 So now in light of this, I'd like you now to invite 00:15:13.11\00:15:15.84 that we go back to our text in Revelation Chapter 8 00:15:15.87\00:15:21.75 but I'd like you to observe something 00:15:21.78\00:15:24.63 that is very important here. 00:15:24.66\00:15:28.20 We have another literary feature here. 00:15:28.23\00:15:30.70 So Chapter 8 from verse 2. 00:15:30.73\00:15:33.78 "And I saw the seven angels," 00:15:33.81\00:15:35.62 I'm repeating this text, "who stand before God, 00:15:35.65\00:15:39.89 and seven trumpets were given to them." 00:15:39.92\00:15:42.80 Can you now skip the next 3 verses? 00:15:42.83\00:15:47.14 And would you go to verse 6. 00:15:47.17\00:15:48.99 "And the seven angels who had the seven trumpets 00:15:49.02\00:15:52.02 prepared themselves to sound them." 00:15:52.05\00:15:54.08 You see, when you read verse 2, 00:15:54.11\00:15:55.88 when you read verse 6, It's chronological order. 00:15:55.91\00:16:00.81 John sees the angels, 00:16:00.84\00:16:02.21 now they're sounding the trumpets, 00:16:02.24\00:16:03.61 but what is the problem in the text? 00:16:03.64\00:16:06.08 That between the verse 2 and the verse 6, 00:16:06.11\00:16:10.86 there are 3 other verses inserted. 00:16:10.89\00:16:14.06 Actually, they function as another interlude. 00:16:14.09\00:16:18.49 And that interlude, actually is telling us 00:16:18.52\00:16:21.95 what the seven trumpets are all about. 00:16:21.98\00:16:25.06 Are you with me? 00:16:25.09\00:16:26.46 So let us now focus on these interludes. 00:16:26.49\00:16:28.38 You see, it's inserted between verses 2 and 6, 00:16:28.41\00:16:32.08 talking about angels with the trumpets 00:16:32.11\00:16:33.89 and when the angels start blowing the trumpets. 00:16:33.92\00:16:36.67 So let's see. 00:16:36.70\00:16:38.12 "Another angel came and he stood at the altar 00:16:38.15\00:16:42.86 holding a golden censer 00:16:42.89\00:16:45.16 and much incense was given to him 00:16:45.19\00:16:47.71 so that he might add it to the prayers of all the saints 00:16:47.74\00:16:51.58 on the golden altar which was before the throne. 00:16:51.61\00:16:55.88 And the smoke of the incense with the prayers of the saints 00:16:55.91\00:17:00.05 went up before God out of the angel's hand. 00:17:00.08\00:17:04.68 Then the angel took the censer 00:17:04.71\00:17:07.21 and filled it with the fire of the altar, 00:17:07.24\00:17:11.21 and threw it to the earth 00:17:11.24\00:17:13.59 and that followed peals of thunder and sound 00:17:13.62\00:17:17.00 and flashes of lightening and earthquake." 00:17:17.03\00:17:20.39 When the censer is thrown down, 00:17:20.42\00:17:23.19 creating that great noise. 00:17:23.22\00:17:27.13 It is that moment the seven angels 00:17:27.16\00:17:31.39 started blowing the trumpets one after another. 00:17:31.42\00:17:34.63 Are you still with me? Please. 00:17:34.66\00:17:37.27 I have to say here something very important. 00:17:37.30\00:17:40.44 This text is very important, very significant. 00:17:40.47\00:17:44.85 Unfortunately, very much misunderstood text. 00:17:44.88\00:17:49.89 Many futurist Christians, 00:17:49.92\00:17:54.03 including my dear brothers, sisters from my own denomination 00:17:54.06\00:17:57.22 some of them, they go to this text. 00:17:57.25\00:18:01.00 And they conclude that the throwing of the censer down 00:18:01.03\00:18:04.74 creating that noise actually signifies 00:18:04.77\00:18:08.27 so called the close of the probation. 00:18:08.30\00:18:11.34 The cessation of Jesus' intercession there in heaven 00:18:11.37\00:18:14.13 and that they include, 00:18:14.16\00:18:15.54 since the blowing of the trumpets 00:18:15.57\00:18:17.07 comes after throwing of the censer, 00:18:17.10\00:18:20.11 that actually seven trumpets 00:18:20.14\00:18:21.53 are still in the future 00:18:21.56\00:18:24.75 that will take place after the close 00:18:24.78\00:18:27.63 of intercession there in heaven. 00:18:27.66\00:18:29.87 So it's a future event to take place 00:18:29.90\00:18:31.99 before the second coming of Christ. 00:18:32.02\00:18:34.19 However, this is completely opposite 00:18:34.22\00:18:37.75 to the biblical evidences 00:18:37.78\00:18:39.48 and what we know about the temple services. 00:18:39.51\00:18:43.86 In the Old Testament, 00:18:43.89\00:18:45.26 especially in the 1st Century in Jerusalem temple. 00:18:45.29\00:18:49.20 So please you now allow me, 00:18:49.23\00:18:51.37 that we go and address those issues one more time. 00:18:51.40\00:18:55.32 We have to keep in mind that verses 3 through 6, 00:18:55.35\00:19:01.11 they do not follow, 00:19:01.14\00:19:04.19 they do not follow the chronological order-- 00:19:04.22\00:19:11.73 okay, of verse 2 and 6. 00:19:11.76\00:19:15.49 You see, it's a clear insertion, it's a clear interlude. 00:19:15.52\00:19:19.71 And the purpose of this interlude 00:19:19.74\00:19:22.20 is really to provide for us 00:19:22.23\00:19:24.48 the theological explanations of the seven trumpets. 00:19:24.51\00:19:28.19 So please I'd like you now that you be with me, 00:19:28.22\00:19:31.24 because I'd like to describe little bit in graphic way-- 00:19:31.27\00:19:35.49 so what we have here. Yes. 00:19:35.52\00:19:39.52 You read in your Bibles in English. 00:19:39.55\00:19:42.50 This is another scholarly article that I had to write. 00:19:42.53\00:19:46.46 John sees an angel. 00:19:46.49\00:19:49.69 Where is the angel seen by? By the altar. 00:19:49.72\00:19:56.21 Unfortunately this is completely wrong translation. 00:19:56.24\00:20:02.49 And please forgive me. 00:20:02.52\00:20:04.93 People who translate the Bible are great linguistics they know. 00:20:04.96\00:20:08.54 But sometimes their theological presuppositions 00:20:08.57\00:20:12.55 affect the translation, why? 00:20:12.58\00:20:16.21 Because they believe 00:20:16.24\00:20:18.18 that this scene takes place there in heaven. 00:20:18.21\00:20:23.29 And in heaven, there is only one altar, 00:20:23.32\00:20:26.60 according to the Bible, which altar is? 00:20:26.63\00:20:28.82 The altar of incense. 00:20:28.85\00:20:32.24 So they say, Altar of Incense 00:20:32.27\00:20:37.79 is object size of this. 00:20:37.82\00:20:39.63 So how can angel be up on the altar as Greek says? 00:20:39.66\00:20:44.34 So that they assume that 00:20:44.37\00:20:45.85 actually the angel was seen at the altar. 00:20:45.88\00:20:49.54 Are you with me? 00:20:49.57\00:20:51.85 I will suggest to you-- I challenge this view. 00:20:51.88\00:20:55.52 Please, would you go with me back there to the text? 00:20:55.55\00:20:59.29 It says, verse 3, "Another angel came 00:20:59.32\00:21:03.28 and stood at the altar holding a golden censer." 00:21:03.31\00:21:06.75 Where was the angel standing? 00:21:06.78\00:21:08.28 They said, at the altar, okay. 00:21:08.31\00:21:11.17 "And much incense was given to him 00:21:11.20\00:21:13.54 so that he might add it to the prayers of all saints 00:21:13.57\00:21:17.29 on the golden altar which is before the throne." 00:21:17.32\00:21:23.65 Did you notice here? 00:21:23.68\00:21:25.47 At the end of this verse that the golden altar is mentioned. 00:21:25.50\00:21:30.92 And when you go to the Old Testament-- 00:21:30.95\00:21:33.58 the century system, 00:21:33.61\00:21:35.10 there is only one golden altar that is in temple 00:21:35.13\00:21:39.32 and this is the Altar of Incense. 00:21:39.35\00:21:43.08 Now would it be unusual, 00:21:43.11\00:21:45.05 that John sees the angel standing at the altar, 00:21:45.08\00:21:50.94 assuming that this is the Altar of Incense. 00:21:50.97\00:21:53.22 An angel takes the incense 00:21:53.25\00:21:55.59 and he offers on the golden altar 00:21:55.62\00:21:58.45 which is also the Altar of Incense. 00:21:58.48\00:22:01.58 Would be normal that he sees 00:22:04.46\00:22:06.88 angel standing at the golden altar 00:22:06.91\00:22:09.20 and the incense is offered then on the altar. 00:22:09.23\00:22:13.60 Because the first altar is not the golden altar, 00:22:13.63\00:22:16.26 is the altar of the burnt offerings, of sacrifices. 00:22:16.29\00:22:21.82 And please I want to just 00:22:21.85\00:22:25.18 to portray to you how this altar look like. 00:22:25.21\00:22:29.86 We came from Josephus Flavius, from Jewish work Mishnah. 00:22:29.89\00:22:34.42 We have the description of the altar Jerusalem 00:22:34.45\00:22:36.95 and usually when we talk about altar what do we think? 00:22:36.98\00:22:39.21 We think about small object where the lamb was put. 00:22:39.24\00:22:41.93 And so many times we're impacted 00:22:41.96\00:22:43.49 by popular pictures of artists that they're doing that. 00:22:43.52\00:22:46.10 By the way, how they portray? 00:22:46.13\00:22:48.61 That altar had stairways. 00:22:48.64\00:22:51.15 I forgot the measure, 00:22:58.22\00:22:59.81 it's a huge object that the priest, 00:22:59.84\00:23:02.22 they have to climb there to the top there. 00:23:02.25\00:23:04.43 It was sizeable, a sizeable object there. 00:23:05.54\00:23:09.26 The priest would go there, you see. 00:23:09.29\00:23:11.03 People climb there, the priest-- 00:23:11.06\00:23:13.36 the priest would stand here and they would offer, 00:23:13.39\00:23:15.65 offer the sacrifice. 00:23:15.68\00:23:17.63 That's why John sees that angel upon the altar. 00:23:17.66\00:23:25.45 Where is the altar of sacrifice is located? On earth. 00:23:25.48\00:23:31.97 And here at this altar, the angel takes the censer 00:23:32.00\00:23:39.65 and he was given the incense 00:23:39.68\00:23:44.07 and he takes that incense where, 00:23:44.10\00:23:46.55 to offer up on the golden altar there in heaven. 00:23:46.58\00:23:52.13 That golden altar John makes very clear 00:23:52.16\00:23:54.95 is before the throne of God. 00:23:54.98\00:23:57.85 He says to open that incense 00:23:57.88\00:24:00.49 with the prayers of God's people. 00:24:00.52\00:24:04.31 Oh boy, something here is very significant 00:24:04.34\00:24:08.17 and very, very important to us. 00:24:08.20\00:24:12.26 I'll tell you something from the Mishnah, 00:24:12.29\00:24:15.28 what they say about the custom 00:24:15.31\00:24:17.53 that's reflected here in chapter 8. 00:24:17.56\00:24:20.27 But I'd like to ask you a question. 00:24:20.30\00:24:22.90 Have you ever thought why so significant 00:24:22.93\00:24:28.34 that at this altar-- the altar of sacrifices, 00:24:28.37\00:24:33.01 the angel is seen as taking the incense 00:24:33.04\00:24:36.83 and the prayers of God's people to take there before God? 00:24:36.86\00:24:39.64 Let me just remind you. 00:24:42.89\00:24:45.06 If you remember, just few presentations earlier, 00:24:45.09\00:24:49.73 we talked about the altar of sacrifices. 00:24:49.76\00:24:55.30 And John saw beneath that altar, the blood, 00:24:55.33\00:24:59.20 the source of God's people who were persecuted 00:24:59.23\00:25:02.65 and they were martyred there. 00:25:02.68\00:25:04.50 What were they doing there? 00:25:04.53\00:25:06.97 Praying to God, asking God how long Lord God of mighty, 00:25:07.00\00:25:12.91 will You not avenge our blood 00:25:12.94\00:25:14.83 and judge those who dwell on the earth? 00:25:14.86\00:25:18.00 But you know so many times when we pray to God, 00:25:18.03\00:25:21.08 our prayers seem to be unheard. 00:25:21.11\00:25:25.83 But you see it is with this vision, this interlude. 00:25:25.86\00:25:30.12 This interlude is inserted intentionally here to tell us 00:25:30.15\00:25:35.20 that now the time has come and there isn't any angel here. 00:25:35.23\00:25:39.63 He comes and takes those prayers of God's people. 00:25:39.66\00:25:44.89 And takes them there before God. 00:25:44.92\00:25:48.51 He offers those prayers 00:25:48.54\00:25:50.32 on the golden altar of incense there before God. 00:25:50.35\00:25:55.41 What happens when the angel offers those prayers before God? 00:25:55.44\00:26:02.30 Now the judgment comes. 00:26:02.33\00:26:04.95 The same angel takes that censer that took 00:26:04.98\00:26:09.43 the prayers of God's people there before God, 00:26:09.46\00:26:12.46 fills with the fire from this altar. 00:26:12.49\00:26:17.09 He comes out of the holy place there in heaven 00:26:17.12\00:26:21.65 and he throws the censer down and there was such a noise, 00:26:21.68\00:26:26.54 lightening and all kinds of sounds. 00:26:26.57\00:26:29.77 In that moment when he does it-- 00:26:29.80\00:26:32.23 the angels, they blow the trumpets. 00:26:32.26\00:26:35.10 When the first angel blows the trumpet, 00:26:35.13\00:26:36.92 there is something that takes place on the earth. 00:26:36.95\00:26:39.47 The judgments of God are on those 00:26:39.50\00:26:41.95 who persecute God's people. Okay. 00:26:41.98\00:26:46.31 Let me document these, what we were talking about. 00:26:46.34\00:26:50.15 In the Jewish work Mishnah, 00:26:50.18\00:26:54.34 we have the clear explanations 00:26:54.37\00:26:56.83 what we are talking here about. 00:26:56.86\00:26:59.67 The people who believe that Revelation 8:3-5 portrays 00:26:59.70\00:27:04.91 the close of the probation, 00:27:04.94\00:27:07.11 they are wrong for one simple reason 00:27:07.14\00:27:09.24 because the Jewish work Mishnah 00:27:09.27\00:27:11.65 describes what was going on in temple 00:27:11.68\00:27:14.61 in Jerusalem under the title Tanith. 00:27:14.64\00:27:18.80 Are you familiar with word 'Tanith?' 00:27:18.83\00:27:20.72 It's the Hebrew word 00:27:20.75\00:27:22.12 that we translate as the word 'daily.' 00:27:22.15\00:27:25.09 That describes what the priests were doing 00:27:25.12\00:27:26.96 every day in the temple. 00:27:26.99\00:27:28.96 It's not the Day of Atonement. 00:27:28.99\00:27:30.50 It's not the close of the probation. 00:27:30.53\00:27:32.54 It's something that was taking place every day 00:27:32.57\00:27:34.80 at temple and they sent, they sent. 00:27:34.83\00:27:36.82 The priest would offer the sacrifice here. 00:27:36.85\00:27:42.98 We're talking about evening sacrifice. 00:27:43.01\00:27:45.87 At that moment the priest would come there to the altar 00:27:45.90\00:27:48.89 and other priest would come to him 00:27:48.92\00:27:51.00 and bring him this golden censer 00:27:51.03\00:27:54.35 and another priest would help that priest 00:27:54.38\00:27:56.58 to put the fire into the censer and they give to him to incense. 00:27:56.61\00:28:01.35 People are standing outside and the priest there. 00:28:01.38\00:28:04.08 At that moment the priest would go down from this altar 00:28:04.11\00:28:08.68 and walk into the Holy Place of the temple. 00:28:08.71\00:28:12.98 People would fall down there on the ground 00:28:13.01\00:28:16.23 and be praying to God. 00:28:16.26\00:28:17.95 He would go there into the temple, 00:28:17.98\00:28:21.37 into the Holy Place, offer the incense before God. 00:28:21.40\00:28:27.43 When he ministered the incense, finishing, 00:28:27.46\00:28:30.26 finished ministering the incense. 00:28:30.29\00:28:32.43 Then he would go and fill that censer 00:28:32.46\00:28:35.28 now that in which originally was incense, 00:28:35.31\00:28:38.69 fill it with the fire there. 00:28:38.72\00:28:41.45 People were outside praying, 00:28:41.48\00:28:43.93 waiting for him to appear and he would come out, 00:28:43.96\00:28:47.35 triumphantly announce that the incense was offered 00:28:47.38\00:28:50.79 and he would take a censer and throw down. 00:28:50.82\00:28:55.29 Actually, Jewish work Mishnah said, 00:28:55.32\00:28:57.67 the sound of the censer was so loud 00:28:57.70\00:29:01.01 that people could not hear the voice of their neighbor. 00:29:01.04\00:29:03.74 Of course, it's exaggeration. 00:29:03.77\00:29:05.69 Actually, the next paragraph said 00:29:05.72\00:29:07.48 that the sound was so loud 00:29:07.51\00:29:10.28 that even could be heard from Jerusalem to Jericho there. 00:29:10.31\00:29:14.14 Evidently, they wanted to put 00:29:14.17\00:29:15.57 so strong emphasis on the sound, okay. 00:29:15.60\00:29:18.28 The moment when the priest threw the censer, 00:29:18.31\00:29:21.49 the priest, seven priests with their trumpets, 00:29:21.52\00:29:24.45 they started blowing the trumpet announcing that they-- 00:29:24.48\00:29:29.91 the Tanith service for that day. 00:29:29.94\00:29:32.70 See friends, you understand now 00:29:32.73\00:29:35.66 what we have in Revelation Chapter 8. 00:29:35.69\00:29:37.75 It reflects the daily or Tanith services in the earthly temple. 00:29:37.78\00:29:42.40 This is not the close of the probation. 00:29:42.43\00:29:45.33 It has nothing to do with that. 00:29:45.36\00:29:48.26 It simply reflects the daily services. 00:29:48.29\00:29:50.96 Something that was taking place on the daily basis 00:29:50.99\00:29:55.36 there in the temple in Jerusalem. 00:29:55.39\00:29:58.02 Are you still with me? 00:29:58.05\00:29:59.67 So now, what is actually 00:29:59.70\00:30:03.06 the meaning of all of this that we try to understand? 00:30:03.09\00:30:06.61 Please let me just remind you of several background texts, 00:30:06.64\00:30:12.64 what we have here in this interlude. 00:30:12.67\00:30:16.60 The first important text is Ezekiel 10:1-7. 00:30:16.63\00:30:22.32 When Ezekiel saw in the vision, 00:30:22.35\00:30:24.83 "An expanse that was over the heads of the cherubim, 00:30:24.86\00:30:28.19 something like sapphire stone, 00:30:28.22\00:30:30.14 in appearance resembling a throne, appeared above them. 00:30:30.17\00:30:33.55 And he spoke to the man clothed in linen and he said, 00:30:33.58\00:30:37.54 'Enter between the whirling wheels under the cherubim, 00:30:37.57\00:30:40.82 fill your hands with coals of fire 00:30:40.85\00:30:43.43 from between the cherubim 00:30:43.46\00:30:44.99 and scatter them over city.'" City, Jerusalem. 00:30:45.02\00:30:48.35 "And he entered into my sight... 00:30:48.38\00:30:50.29 then the cherub stretched out his hand 00:30:50.32\00:30:52.26 from between the cherubim to the fire 00:30:52.29\00:30:54.33 which was between the cherubim, 00:30:54.36\00:30:56.10 took some and put it into the hands of one clothed in linen, 00:30:56.13\00:30:59.78 who took it and went out." What is this vision all about? 00:30:59.81\00:31:04.30 It's actually about God's judgment 00:31:04.33\00:31:06.21 over unfaithful Jerusalem. 00:31:06.24\00:31:08.58 So this vision of Ezekiel is telling us actually, 00:31:08.61\00:31:12.44 what this interlude is all about, 00:31:12.47\00:31:14.32 because this interlude reflects the vision, 00:31:14.35\00:31:17.95 the vision of Ezekiel. 00:31:17.98\00:31:19.36 By the way let me remind you just a few biblical texts. 00:31:19.39\00:31:22.35 If you go to Psalm 141, Psalm 141:2, 00:31:22.38\00:31:27.50 "May my prayer be counted as incense before you, 00:31:27.53\00:31:33.19 the lifting up of my hands as the evening offering." 00:31:33.22\00:31:37.42 You can see how this text really tell us 00:31:37.45\00:31:40.23 what the offering of that incense is all about. 00:31:40.26\00:31:43.76 But I'd like us to go to the Book of Revelation, 00:31:43.79\00:31:45.74 because the Book of Revelation really gives us 00:31:45.77\00:31:48.03 the meaning of this incense. 00:31:48.06\00:31:51.14 Chapter 5, verse 8, "When he had taken the book, 00:31:51.17\00:31:55.13 the four living creatures 00:31:55.16\00:31:57.31 and the twenty-four elders fell down before the lamb, 00:31:57.34\00:32:01.80 each one holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, 00:32:01.83\00:32:08.18 which are the prayers of the saints." 00:32:08.21\00:32:12.57 Do we have any doubt 00:32:12.60\00:32:13.97 what actually this incense is all about? 00:32:14.00\00:32:16.42 Now please I'd like you that you see now connection. 00:32:16.45\00:32:21.69 When it says in symbolical language 00:32:21.72\00:32:24.01 that the angel was there at the altar, 00:32:24.04\00:32:26.17 up actually on the altar, up on the altar, 00:32:26.20\00:32:28.84 when he took that incense and he offered that incense up 00:32:28.87\00:32:33.06 on that golden altar before the throne, 00:32:33.09\00:32:35.55 before God together we praise for God's people. 00:32:35.58\00:32:38.84 Now we see what is this all about. 00:32:38.87\00:32:40.63 These are not any prayers. 00:32:40.66\00:32:42.58 These are the prayers of God's harmed, 00:32:42.61\00:32:45.84 persecuted and oppressed people from the fifth seal. 00:32:45.87\00:32:49.40 You remember that God gave them the promise, 00:32:49.43\00:32:52.46 just wait for a while. 00:32:52.49\00:32:55.55 The time is coming when I will judge your enemies 00:32:55.58\00:32:59.15 but please now, please now, it's very important. 00:32:59.18\00:33:03.68 But actually this interlude is giving us 00:33:03.71\00:33:06.80 little bit different message. 00:33:06.83\00:33:08.98 Not only that God, one day 00:33:09.01\00:33:11.42 will judge the enemies of His people. 00:33:11.45\00:33:13.83 He is telling them I am already judging your enemies. 00:33:13.86\00:33:18.31 Yeah, amen. 00:33:18.34\00:33:21.08 Let me stop for a while. 00:33:21.11\00:33:23.14 That God will judge the enemies of His people refers to what? 00:33:23.17\00:33:27.37 To the seven last plagues. 00:33:27.40\00:33:30.67 But seven trumpets are God's judgment 00:33:30.70\00:33:35.03 already in the present time judging enemies. 00:33:35.06\00:33:37.05 So the seven trumpets are the precursor. 00:33:37.08\00:33:39.37 A foretaste of that great judgment. 00:33:39.40\00:33:44.32 The seven trumpets are actually 00:33:44.35\00:33:47.30 the expression of the wrath of God, 00:33:47.33\00:33:50.10 okay, to help His people to deliver them. 00:33:50.13\00:33:52.77 But when we come to seven last plagues 00:33:52.80\00:33:55.11 you'll see the seven last plagues, 00:33:55.14\00:33:58.44 actually are the fullness of God's wrath. 00:33:58.47\00:34:02.04 You see the seven trumpets are mixed with the mercy, 00:34:02.07\00:34:05.32 they intended even the enemies of God's people 00:34:05.35\00:34:08.75 to bring to repentance. 00:34:08.78\00:34:10.19 But the seven last plagues, 00:34:10.22\00:34:11.67 they're not intended to bring anybody to repentance, 00:34:11.70\00:34:14.38 because they take place after the closed probation. 00:34:14.41\00:34:17.43 Seven trumpets are before the close of the probation. 00:34:17.46\00:34:20.85 And we will see the chapters 10--11 show clearly 00:34:20.88\00:34:25.17 that even while the sixth trumpet is blown, 00:34:25.20\00:34:30.44 there is the preaching of the gospel. 00:34:30.47\00:34:32.85 And the two witnesses are doing that, 00:34:32.88\00:34:36.41 proclaiming the everlasting gospel to the world. 00:34:36.44\00:34:39.56 So the seven trumpets, actually, 00:34:39.59\00:34:42.22 around the same period of history as the seven seals. 00:34:42.25\00:34:48.29 Okay, now you have to help me. 00:34:48.32\00:34:49.69 I just want that you see 00:34:49.72\00:34:51.12 how we have the keys in the Book of Revelation. 00:34:51.15\00:34:54.03 Can you go back one more time 00:34:54.06\00:34:55.66 to how Mishnah describes the daily services? 00:34:55.69\00:35:01.47 According to Mishnah, the Mishnah, 00:35:01.50\00:35:04.70 when did the angel, sorry, 00:35:04.73\00:35:07.30 when did the priest take the incense 00:35:07.33\00:35:12.67 to offer there in the Holy Place, when? 00:35:12.70\00:35:15.68 After the offering the evening sacrifice. 00:35:15.71\00:35:22.45 Here we have a clue 00:35:22.48\00:35:25.40 of the beginning of the trumpets, 00:35:25.43\00:35:28.69 because we have 2,000 years ago 00:35:28.72\00:35:32.98 that the sacrifice was offered on the cross of Calvary. 00:35:33.01\00:35:38.98 It was after Jesus' death on the cross. 00:35:39.01\00:35:42.61 And His ascension there to the heavenly places 00:35:42.64\00:35:45.97 that it is after that the seven trumpets are blown 00:35:46.00\00:35:50.33 and both the sixth seal and the seventh seal 00:35:50.36\00:35:54.08 and the sixth trumpet and the seventh trumpet 00:35:54.11\00:35:56.29 actually brings us to the time of the end. 00:35:56.32\00:35:58.82 So we have here the clear indication 00:35:58.85\00:36:01.11 that the seals and the trumpets, 00:36:01.14\00:36:02.82 they run the same course of history. 00:36:02.85\00:36:06.21 Does not mean that each seal and trumpet they match there, 00:36:06.24\00:36:09.35 but they cover the same period of Christian history. 00:36:09.38\00:36:13.12 I'd like you now to notice something else. 00:36:13.15\00:36:17.78 Please, now you have to cooperate with me. 00:36:17.81\00:36:20.43 I'd like to bring to your memory what we talk about seals. 00:36:20.46\00:36:25.46 Let's see how the seals are organized. 00:36:25.49\00:36:27.40 Please I will use the blackboard here. 00:36:27.43\00:36:30.74 Please, the seals they fall in groups. 00:36:30.77\00:36:35.05 What is the first group of seals? 00:36:35.08\00:36:37.10 Four horsemen. Okay, let's put it here, seals. 00:36:37.13\00:36:42.76 You have four horsemen. What comes next? 00:36:42.79\00:36:48.50 Two seals, do you remember that? Why two seals? 00:36:48.53\00:36:50.88 Because before the last seal, we have the interlude, okay? 00:36:50.91\00:36:55.28 So we have two seals. 00:36:55.31\00:36:58.40 Seal fifth and sixth and then we've the seventh seal. 00:36:58.43\00:37:05.63 But before the seventh seal, 00:37:05.66\00:37:08.98 we have a kind of interlude and it's chapter 7. 00:37:09.01\00:37:13.09 Do you see that? 00:37:13.12\00:37:15.17 Please, what is the purpose of chapter 7 of this interlude? 00:37:15.20\00:37:19.37 To identify God's people, to tell us 00:37:19.40\00:37:23.02 about those who'll be able to stand 00:37:23.05\00:37:26.02 in the day of the wrath of God. 00:37:26.05\00:37:28.08 The God's end time people. Are you with me? 00:37:28.11\00:37:31.07 Those who will live before the second coming of Christ. 00:37:31.10\00:37:33.59 Let's go to trumpets. Okay, let me put here. 00:37:33.62\00:37:41.04 How the seven trumpets organized? 00:37:41.07\00:37:45.00 In the same way. 00:37:45.03\00:37:46.85 You can see we have here four trumpets. 00:37:46.88\00:37:49.52 Why four trumpets? 00:37:49.55\00:37:51.09 If you can just see the first four trumpets, 00:37:51.12\00:37:56.13 they're just in one chapter very short 00:37:56.16\00:37:59.98 2-3 verses about each chapter, about each trumpet. 00:38:00.01\00:38:03.28 Can you notice it there? 00:38:03.31\00:38:05.35 But then if you go to Chapter 8 verse 13 00:38:05.38\00:38:08.87 only 12 verses about four trumpets. 00:38:08.90\00:38:11.14 You read in verse 3 about war 00:38:11.17\00:38:15.09 against inhabitants of the earth, 00:38:15.12\00:38:17.35 those who live on the earth, 00:38:17.38\00:38:18.75 because of the last three trumpets 00:38:18.78\00:38:20.79 which are actually three wars. 00:38:20.82\00:38:23.87 They're different-- so once again 00:38:23.90\00:38:27.31 we have here two trumpets. 00:38:27.34\00:38:32.67 And then there is-- oh, sorry, 00:38:32.70\00:38:34.60 this is not seven--actually another one trumpet, okay? 00:38:34.63\00:38:37.78 And then there is the seventh trumpet 00:38:37.81\00:38:41.08 that comes actually in chapter 11, very far, later. 00:38:41.11\00:38:45.50 But before the sixth and the seventh trumpet, 00:38:45.53\00:38:48.19 what do we have? 00:38:48.22\00:38:49.59 We have another interlude, which is actually chapter 10. 00:38:49.62\00:38:56.76 You remember John, and eating the scroll 00:38:56.79\00:39:00.57 that was sweet in his mouth, bitter in his stomach. 00:39:00.60\00:39:04.36 Then we go to chapter 11, we have the two witnesses, 00:39:04.39\00:39:07.28 you remember that. 00:39:07.31\00:39:09.02 So we have here, 00:39:09.05\00:39:12.40 chapter 9, sorry, chapter 10. 00:39:12.43\00:39:19.07 Okay, from verse 1 00:39:19.10\00:39:21.26 to chapter 11 verse 14, 00:39:21.29\00:39:28.01 we have another interlude. 00:39:28.04\00:39:31.81 You will notice here how the two interludes 00:39:31.84\00:39:36.32 that fit into the same historical time 00:39:36.35\00:39:39.35 just before the second coming of Christ. 00:39:39.38\00:39:43.31 What is the purpose of this interlude? 00:39:43.34\00:39:45.88 To identify God's people 00:39:45.91\00:39:47.35 who will be at the time of the end. 00:39:47.38\00:39:49.46 What is the purpose of this interlude? 00:39:49.49\00:39:51.74 To tell us what these people will be doing 00:39:51.77\00:39:57.74 at the time before the second coming of Christ. 00:39:57.77\00:40:00.62 They're commissioned to preach the gospel 00:40:00.65\00:40:03.62 and they will go through that sweet bitter experience 00:40:03.65\00:40:06.49 as they proclaim the gospel. 00:40:06.52\00:40:08.27 By the way, we have great message 00:40:08.30\00:40:10.20 when we come to that. 00:40:10.23\00:40:11.60 So we hav to wait until we come to chapter 11-- 00:40:11.63\00:40:14.43 And also to chapter 10 and also to chapter 11. 00:40:14.46\00:40:18.85 So you can now see how actually the seven trumpets 00:40:18.88\00:40:24.13 and the seven seals, they cover the same historical period. 00:40:24.16\00:40:30.34 There is no teaching of the Book of Revelation 00:40:30.37\00:40:33.01 that are first seals and after that trumpets. 00:40:33.04\00:40:35.42 Trumpets and seals, they're on parallel. 00:40:35.45\00:40:38.77 I hope that they--both begin with the first century 00:40:38.80\00:40:41.27 after the cross and both end with the second coming of Christ 00:40:41.30\00:40:46.96 and actually seven seal and the seven trumpets 00:40:46.99\00:40:50.26 describe the time after the second coming of Christ. 00:40:50.29\00:40:54.00 So one more time before we go to the seven trumpets, 00:40:54.03\00:40:56.94 please can somebody help me? What are the trumpets all about? 00:40:56.97\00:41:01.13 They're God's judgments 00:41:01.16\00:41:04.04 in response to the prayer of His people. 00:41:04.07\00:41:07.86 Let's keep the Old Testament background. 00:41:07.89\00:41:09.62 When God's people were in trouble what did they do? 00:41:09.65\00:41:12.88 They prayed to God and they blowed trumpets. 00:41:12.91\00:41:16.00 Do you see the same concept 00:41:16.03\00:41:17.81 that we have here in this interlude? 00:41:17.84\00:41:20.46 So please we have now the clue, what the trumpets are about. 00:41:20.49\00:41:24.48 They're God's judgments 00:41:24.51\00:41:27.67 in answering the prayers of His people. 00:41:27.70\00:41:33.73 Okay, so with this information, 00:41:33.76\00:41:38.29 now we are going to analyze and to see 00:41:38.32\00:41:44.50 what these seven trumpets are all about. 00:41:44.53\00:41:47.74 So the prayer of God's people are answered, 00:41:47.77\00:41:50.42 they're heard there before God. 00:41:50.45\00:41:53.20 And now the angels 00:41:53.23\00:41:55.91 are blowing the trumpets. 00:41:55.94\00:42:02.79 And now let us go and to see 00:42:02.82\00:42:05.35 about the first, the first trumpet 00:42:05.38\00:42:08.38 that is portrayed in verse 7-- in verse 7. 00:42:08.41\00:42:15.72 It says that the first angel sounded 00:42:15.75\00:42:20.42 and there came hail and fire mixed with blood 00:42:20.45\00:42:26.64 and they were thrown to the earth 00:42:26.67\00:42:29.20 and a third of the earth was burned up 00:42:29.23\00:42:33.56 and a third of the trees were burned up 00:42:33.59\00:42:37.59 and all the green grass was burned up. 00:42:37.62\00:42:45.49 We have here a very strange symbolism. 00:42:45.52\00:42:49.97 But when you read this you have, okay, 00:42:50.00\00:42:52.99 you have when the angel blows the trumpet 00:42:53.02\00:42:55.55 that there was hail and fire mixed with blood. 00:42:55.58\00:43:00.43 By the way, what is going on here? 00:43:00.46\00:43:03.59 It's an allusion to the Egyptian plague. 00:43:03.62\00:43:06.87 If you remember, that one of the Egyptians plagues, 00:43:06.90\00:43:10.47 we have the fire mixed with hail and killing not only the animals 00:43:10.50\00:43:18.45 but also killing the people 00:43:18.48\00:43:20.10 who found themselves there in the field. 00:43:20.13\00:43:24.42 In the Old Testament, as we read, 00:43:24.45\00:43:28.14 God very often used hail mixed with fire 00:43:28.17\00:43:35.78 which caused the bloodshed as the means of the judgment 00:43:35.81\00:43:39.58 against the enemies of His people. 00:43:39.61\00:43:41.62 Probably, one of the best text is Ezekiel 38:22-23. 00:43:41.65\00:43:49.16 Let's read this text. 00:43:49.19\00:43:50.94 Ezekiel says, "With pestilence and with blood 00:43:50.97\00:43:54.87 I will enter into the judgment with him. 00:43:54.90\00:43:57.68 And I will rain on him and on his troops, 00:43:57.71\00:44:01.13 and on many peoples who are with him, a torrential rain, 00:44:01.16\00:44:05.07 with hailstone, fire and brimstone, 00:44:05.10\00:44:08.68 I will magnify myself, sanctify myself, 00:44:08.71\00:44:12.04 and make myself known in the sight of many nations, 00:44:12.07\00:44:15.82 and they will know I am Lord." 00:44:15.85\00:44:17.57 Let's read another text which is actually Isaiah 44:2-4. 00:44:17.60\00:44:25.26 We read here, "Thus says the Lord who made you 00:44:25.29\00:44:28.43 and formed you from the womb, who will help you, 00:44:28.46\00:44:31.90 'Do not fear, O Jacob my servant, 00:44:31.93\00:44:34.51 and you Jeshurun whom I have chosen. 00:44:34.54\00:44:37.37 For I will pour out my water on the thirsty land 00:44:37.40\00:44:40.99 and streams on the dry ground. 00:44:41.02\00:44:43.28 I will pour out my spirit on your offspring 00:44:43.31\00:44:46.24 and my blessing on your descendants.'" 00:44:46.27\00:44:48.44 And now please pay attention to this. 00:44:48.47\00:44:50.10 "'And they will spring up among the grass, 00:44:50.13\00:44:52.73 like poplars by streams of water.'" 00:44:52.76\00:44:55.22 These two texts are crucial 00:44:55.25\00:45:00.29 for the understanding of the meaning of the first trumpet. 00:45:00.32\00:45:04.10 Number one, we see that hail and fire 00:45:04.13\00:45:09.40 mixed with blood is the frequent symbol 00:45:09.43\00:45:12.94 in the Old Testament of judgment. 00:45:12.97\00:45:14.86 So we're talking here about the judgment. 00:45:14.89\00:45:17.01 But you'll notice that all of this 00:45:17.04\00:45:21.26 actually affects the grass and the trees. 00:45:21.29\00:45:24.96 Keeping you one more time, 00:45:24.99\00:45:27.19 that the Book of Revelation is a symbolic book. 00:45:27.22\00:45:30.59 So the question is, are different commentators 00:45:30.62\00:45:33.85 true they say here we have the destruction of vegetation. 00:45:33.88\00:45:36.72 Come on, do God's judgment 00:45:36.75\00:45:40.10 concern grass and trees? 00:45:40.13\00:45:44.70 When you go to the Old Testament, 00:45:46.33\00:45:48.81 trees and grass are frequently symbols for God's people. 00:45:48.84\00:45:54.16 I can give you so many texts. 00:45:54.19\00:45:56.65 By the way, you'll continue study for yourself. 00:45:56.68\00:45:59.30 You go to the commentary, 00:45:59.33\00:46:00.70 you'll find there many, many, many text to support it. 00:46:00.73\00:46:04.08 We just read here in Isaiah, this chapter 44 00:46:04.11\00:46:08.54 and you'll see that God clearly 00:46:08.57\00:46:11.34 describes His people as grass and trees. 00:46:11.37\00:46:15.65 So this hail and fire mixed with blood 00:46:15.68\00:46:18.60 will destroy the trees and green grass. 00:46:18.63\00:46:21.17 Symbolize God's judgment against apostate believers 00:46:21.20\00:46:26.21 who have joined the ranks 00:46:26.24\00:46:27.75 of the opponents, of the opponents of God. 00:46:27.78\00:46:29.76 So please allow me, at this point, 00:46:29.79\00:46:33.11 I have to read another text that comes actually from Jesus 00:46:33.14\00:46:37.38 which is very, very significantly. 00:46:37.41\00:46:39.58 In Luke Chapter 23, 00:46:39.61\00:46:41.63 Jesus talks about judgment against Jerusalem, 00:46:41.66\00:46:44.89 unfaithful Jerusalem. 00:46:44.92\00:46:46.94 Remember when Jesus was taken there 00:46:46.97\00:46:49.35 to the place of crucifixion, 00:46:49.38\00:46:51.95 there is some women they're standing and crying. 00:46:51.98\00:46:55.47 And Jesus told them, "Don't cry because of me. 00:46:55.50\00:46:59.92 Cry about what will happen to you and to this city." 00:46:59.95\00:47:03.91 And now comes the statement, Luke 23:31 00:47:03.94\00:47:07.61 "For if they do these things when the tree is green, 00:47:07.64\00:47:13.79 what will happen when it is dry?" 00:47:13.82\00:47:18.87 Actually Jesus refers to Himself as the green tree. 00:47:18.90\00:47:23.35 When they treat this green tree in such way, 00:47:23.38\00:47:26.76 how will they treat the tree that is dry? 00:47:26.79\00:47:30.05 He refers to the Jewish people 00:47:30.08\00:47:32.12 who evidently did not have 00:47:32.15\00:47:34.42 any life in themselves, spiritual life. 00:47:34.45\00:47:37.15 Because they rejected God, they rejected the Messiah. 00:47:37.18\00:47:41.21 And if you read the text that follows, 00:47:41.24\00:47:43.18 you can see clearly that actually Jesus predicted here 00:47:43.21\00:47:47.99 the judgment that will come very soon upon Jerusalem 00:47:48.02\00:47:51.42 that it didn't happened in AD 70 00:47:51.45\00:47:54.43 when Romans they came 00:47:54.46\00:47:56.51 and actually destroyed Jerusalem. 00:47:56.54\00:47:59.18 So actually these words of Jesus 00:47:59.21\00:48:01.12 together with all those different 00:48:01.15\00:48:02.52 Old Testament background 00:48:02.55\00:48:03.98 is telling us, they're telling us, 00:48:04.01\00:48:06.60 what actually the first trumpet is about. 00:48:06.63\00:48:10.60 Actually, the judgment of God 00:48:10.63\00:48:12.64 always begins from the household of God. 00:48:12.67\00:48:18.05 The green tree and the green grass 00:48:18.08\00:48:22.04 stand as the symbol for God's people. 00:48:22.07\00:48:24.87 So in our best understanding-- 00:48:24.90\00:48:27.05 we have here actually the judgment of God 00:48:27.08\00:48:30.90 upon the leaders of the Jewish nations. 00:48:30.93\00:48:33.84 The events that took place in AD 70 00:48:33.87\00:48:38.06 with the destruction of Jerusalem. 00:48:38.09\00:48:39.60 Please, let me clarify it. 00:48:39.63\00:48:42.85 Yes, the first judgment heralds-- 00:48:42.88\00:48:46.40 the first trumpet heralds 00:48:46.43\00:48:47.80 the judgment up on those of God's people 00:48:47.83\00:48:50.85 who were involved in crucifixion of Christ 00:48:50.88\00:48:55.57 and the persecution of the early church. 00:48:55.60\00:48:58.97 But we have to keep in mind, 00:48:59.00\00:49:01.45 many Jews, actually they accepted Christ. 00:49:01.48\00:49:05.03 So please, we aren't talking about the people 00:49:05.06\00:49:07.71 and to reject them and to invent strange doctrines 00:49:07.74\00:49:11.86 about the punishment that came upon them. 00:49:11.89\00:49:13.78 We're not talking here simply about Jewish people. 00:49:13.81\00:49:16.17 We're talking about the Jewish leaders. 00:49:16.20\00:49:19.12 And the minority of those leaders who rejected Christ, 00:49:19.15\00:49:22.95 they became the enemies of the early church. 00:49:22.98\00:49:26.11 And evidently there were judgments 00:49:26.14\00:49:29.67 that came naturally upon them. 00:49:29.70\00:49:32.50 And the first judge-- 00:49:32.53\00:49:34.60 trumpet actually describes death judgment 00:49:34.63\00:49:38.48 that came upon the Jewish leaders 00:49:38.51\00:49:41.94 because of their attitude towards Christ, 00:49:41.97\00:49:43.95 rejection of Christ. 00:49:43.98\00:49:46.56 And how to say, antagonistic attitude toward early church, 00:49:46.59\00:49:53.11 because they're mainly responsible 00:49:53.14\00:49:54.97 for the persecution of the early church. 00:49:55.00\00:49:57.20 Just as in the Old Testament, 00:49:57.23\00:49:59.81 God used hail and fire as His judgment 00:49:59.84\00:50:03.00 against the enemies of Israel. 00:50:03.03\00:50:05.45 So now the sounding of the first trumpet 00:50:05.48\00:50:08.98 actually heralds the judgment upon those who crucified Christ. 00:50:09.01\00:50:13.58 And actually, who were responsible 00:50:13.61\00:50:15.14 for the persecution of those early Christians 00:50:15.17\00:50:17.70 and the early church. 00:50:17.73\00:50:19.74 But now we're going there to the second trumpet. 00:50:19.77\00:50:23.47 And let us read there in verse 8. 00:50:23.50\00:50:27.76 "The second angel sounded 00:50:27.79\00:50:29.50 and something like a great mountain 00:50:29.53\00:50:31.72 burning with fire was thrown into the sea. 00:50:31.75\00:50:34.85 And a third of the sea became blood 00:50:34.88\00:50:38.13 and a third of the creatures 00:50:38.16\00:50:40.32 which were in the sea had life died 00:50:40.35\00:50:43.66 and a third of the ships were destroyed." 00:50:43.69\00:50:48.16 Boy, now what is this? We saw about the first trumpet. 00:50:48.19\00:50:52.74 I told you that we're dealing 00:50:52.77\00:50:54.14 with very difficult section of the Book of Revelation. 00:50:54.17\00:50:57.76 But when we have difficult-- difficult text, 00:50:57.79\00:51:00.23 what are we supposed to do? Go to the Old Testament. 00:51:00.26\00:51:03.37 So let's go to the Old Testament. 00:51:03.40\00:51:05.71 What is here the key? 00:51:05.74\00:51:07.11 The key is the burning mountain with fire 00:51:07.14\00:51:10.25 that was thrown into the sea. 00:51:10.28\00:51:12.39 Can you keep this in mind? 00:51:12.42\00:51:13.79 Let's go back to Jeremiah 51:22. 00:51:13.82\00:51:17.67 Let's go the Old Testament. Jeremiah 51:22. 00:51:17.70\00:51:22.72 And Jeremiah talks about Babylon. 00:51:22.75\00:51:25.66 So we're dealing with the prophecy against Babylon 00:51:25.69\00:51:28.14 who is the enemy of God's people. 00:51:28.17\00:51:30.03 And we read there, "'Behold, I am against you. 00:51:30.06\00:51:33.65 O destroying mountain.'" 00:51:33.68\00:51:36.26 How does Jeremiah refer to Babylon? 00:51:36.29\00:51:40.48 "'Destroying mountain who destroys the whole earth,' 00:51:40.51\00:51:44.46 declares the Lord. 00:51:44.49\00:51:45.86 I will stretch out my hand against you 00:51:45.89\00:51:48.61 and roll you down from the crags, 00:51:48.64\00:51:50.86 I will make you a burned out mountain." 00:51:50.89\00:51:53.51 Do you see this concept of burned mountain 00:51:53.54\00:51:55.06 where it is taken from? 00:51:55.09\00:51:56.61 It's taken from the Old Testament. 00:51:56.64\00:51:58.76 But then we go to the end of chapter 51, 00:51:58.79\00:52:02.52 Jeremiah 51 and we read verses 63 and 64. 00:52:02.55\00:52:09.11 We read there. 00:52:09.14\00:52:10.58 It's about the same prophecy 00:52:10.61\00:52:12.43 against the same world power, against the Babylon. 00:52:12.46\00:52:16.49 "As soon as you finish reading this scroll," 00:52:16.52\00:52:18.71 God said to Jeremiah, "you will tie a stone to it 00:52:18.74\00:52:22.92 and throw it into the middle of the Euphrates. And say. 00:52:22.95\00:52:26.60 'Just so shall Babylon sink down 00:52:26.63\00:52:29.29 and not rise again because of the calamity 00:52:29.32\00:52:32.68 that I am going to bring upon on her, 00:52:32.71\00:52:35.72 and they will become exhausted.' 00:52:35.75\00:52:38.27 "Thus far are the words of Jeremiah."' 00:52:38.30\00:52:42.60 You see in the Old Testament, who is the burning mountain. 00:52:42.63\00:52:46.05 And who will be taken and thrown into the deep water, 00:52:46.08\00:52:49.75 sink there and will not rise again. 00:52:49.78\00:52:52.36 It's actually ancient Babylon. 00:52:52.39\00:52:56.15 So actually this Old Testament prophecy 00:52:56.18\00:52:59.41 provides for us the clue 00:52:59.44\00:53:03.52 on the meaning of this second trumpet. 00:53:03.55\00:53:07.51 It helps us to unlock the symbolism 00:53:07.54\00:53:10.69 of this vision with reference to this burning mountain 00:53:10.72\00:53:14.61 that we have in the second trumpet. 00:53:14.64\00:53:17.67 In the time of John in the first century, 00:53:17.70\00:53:20.53 the Christians, they called Rome, Babylon. 00:53:20.56\00:53:25.07 By the way, if you go to 1 Peter 5:13, 00:53:25.10\00:53:30.52 you will see that Peter who was at that time in Rome, 00:53:30.55\00:53:33.87 he sends greetings to Christians from Babylon. 00:53:33.90\00:53:37.54 Okay. We have to understand it. 00:53:37.57\00:53:40.21 Just as ancient Babylon was responsible 00:53:40.24\00:53:43.86 for the persecution of God's people Israel, 00:53:43.89\00:53:46.76 so Rome is now responsible 00:53:46.79\00:53:50.97 for the persecution of the early church. 00:53:51.00\00:53:57.38 As judgment came up with ancient Babylon, 00:53:57.41\00:54:01.56 so now the judgment is announced against Rome. 00:54:01.59\00:54:06.98 Okay, looks something here that this burning mountain, 00:54:07.01\00:54:12.05 which is evidently Rome in the Roman Empire. 00:54:12.08\00:54:15.09 It says it will be cast into the sea. 00:54:15.12\00:54:17.95 Is actually the sea that will destroy this burning mountain? 00:54:17.98\00:54:22.51 I'd like to invite you to go with me to Isaiah 57:20. 00:54:22.54\00:54:28.15 This is just one of numerous Old Testament texts 00:54:28.18\00:54:32.51 that give us the meaning of the sea. 00:54:32.54\00:54:35.37 It says, "But the wicked are like the tossing sea, 00:54:35.40\00:54:40.55 for it cannot be quiet. 00:54:40.58\00:54:42.21 And its waters toss up refuse and mud." 00:54:42.24\00:54:46.44 By the way if you go to the Book of Revelation, 00:54:46.47\00:54:49.02 you will find out that the prostitute Babylon 00:54:49.05\00:54:51.00 in Revelation 17 sits on many waters, 00:54:51.03\00:54:56.61 which is actually reference to Babylon. 00:54:56.64\00:54:58.53 But in verse 15, those many waters, 00:54:58.56\00:55:03.07 okay, are referred to as many nations, 00:55:03.10\00:55:06.93 peoples and tongues. 00:55:06.96\00:55:08.60 So you can see in the Bible, the roaring sea, stormy sea, 00:55:08.63\00:55:14.26 it's always symbol for the wicked 00:55:14.29\00:55:16.50 who never have peace. They're always rebellious. 00:55:16.53\00:55:20.47 They always fight against God and His people. 00:55:20.50\00:55:24.13 So now we have here a clue for what is going on. 00:55:24.16\00:55:28.94 We are talking about the many nations 00:55:28.97\00:55:30.54 that will turn against Rome 00:55:30.57\00:55:33.18 and finally bring Rome to destruction. 00:55:33.21\00:55:37.03 But there is something else, it says 00:55:37.06\00:55:39.68 that what happens here even one third of the ship 00:55:39.71\00:55:43.77 of this mountain will be destroyed. 00:55:43.80\00:55:46.27 In the Book of Ezekiel-- by the way, 00:55:46.30\00:55:48.74 we read in chapter 27 verses 29 and 32. 00:55:48.77\00:55:54.25 It says, "All who handle," it's about Babylon. 00:55:54.28\00:55:58.43 "The sailors and all the pilots of the sea 00:55:58.46\00:56:01.23 will come down from their ships. 00:56:01.26\00:56:03.71 They will stand on the land, and they will make their voice 00:56:03.74\00:56:07.74 heard over you and will cry bitterly. 00:56:07.77\00:56:10.38 They will cast dust on their heads 00:56:10.41\00:56:12.69 and will wallow in ashes. 00:56:12.72\00:56:14.66 Moreover, in their wailing, 00:56:14.69\00:56:16.22 they will take up a lamentation for you and lament over you. 00:56:16.25\00:56:19.91 "Who is like Tyre, like her 00:56:19.94\00:56:22.03 who is silent in the midst of the sea?" 00:56:22.06\00:56:24.49 You can see how actually the Book of Revelation 00:56:24.52\00:56:27.31 uses this Old Testament language. 00:56:27.34\00:56:30.18 So friends in the conclusion, 00:56:30.21\00:56:32.49 what do we have in the first two trumpets? 00:56:32.52\00:56:35.23 I'd like to mention something that trumpets, 00:56:35.26\00:56:39.34 they always run in pairs. 00:56:39.37\00:56:43.73 The first two trumpets are God's judgments against whom? 00:56:43.76\00:56:48.63 The two powers, the two nations that crucified Christ, 00:56:48.66\00:56:54.86 and that were responsible 00:56:54.89\00:56:56.46 for the persecution of the early church. 00:56:56.49\00:56:59.33 So the first and the second trumpets. 00:56:59.36\00:57:01.96 They talk about God's judgment 00:57:01.99\00:57:03.38 against the leaders of the Jewish nations, 00:57:03.41\00:57:06.31 not the Jewish people. 00:57:06.34\00:57:08.25 The leaders of the Jewish nations 00:57:08.28\00:57:10.09 and also God's judgment against Rome 00:57:10.12\00:57:12.62 that took place in the fifth century. 00:57:12.65\00:57:14.77 So what we have here is 00:57:14.80\00:57:17.32 that the answer of God's people are heard. 00:57:17.35\00:57:21.07 God is coming in judgment. 00:57:21.10\00:57:23.34 And God does everything in order to vindicate, 00:57:23.37\00:57:26.88 to vindicate His people 00:57:26.91\00:57:28.56 and to bring judgment on the enemies. 00:57:28.59\00:57:31.18 Yes, we have a powerful God. 00:57:31.21\00:57:33.85
