When we study the book of
Revelation it's important to

understand that God has
given us clues to its prophetic

symbols in the book of Daniel.
00:01:09.26\00:01:11.33
So we're going to take a little
detour from Revelation to begin

and go to the book of Daniel.
00:01:15.87\00:01:18.91
And here in the
book of Daniel we have a

revelation of the future.
00:01:21.81\00:01:24.65
You know, so many people look
to the future, and they're quite
00:01:24.68\00:01:27.68
frightened, quite
scared about the future.
00:01:27.72\00:01:29.92
They're wondering,
will we be destroyed in
00:01:29.95\00:01:31.95
some thermonuclear war?
00:01:31.99\00:01:33.56
Will global warming raise the
water levels of coastal cities?
00:01:33.59\00:01:39.76
and will they be washed away?
00:01:39.79\00:01:41.60
Will famine grip our earth?
00:01:41.63\00:01:44.07
And often many, many parents
who have children take their
00:01:44.10\00:01:49.67
babies in their hands, and
they look at the eyes of these
00:01:49.70\00:01:53.88
beautiful little ones and
they say, What kind of future
00:01:53.91\00:01:58.28
will my children have?
00:01:58.31\00:01:59.88
What kind of future can I
dream about for my own kids,
00:01:59.91\00:02:06.09
and my own family?
00:02:06.12\00:02:08.39
If you're a parent, a father
or mother, you too may wonder

about the world your
children will grow up in.
00:02:14.00\00:02:16.60
Will it be a world of terrorism?
00:02:16.63\00:02:19.03
Will it be a world
of economic disaster?
00:02:19.07\00:02:22.10
Will it be a world
where diseases are so rampant,
00:02:22.14\00:02:26.64
and pestilences are so
rampant that large parts of
00:02:26.68\00:02:30.71
civilization will be destroyed?
00:02:30.75\00:02:33.75
Will it be a world
where thermonuclear war
00:02:33.78\00:02:37.05
annihilates our cities?
00:02:37.09\00:02:38.62
You know, you look at the eyes
of your children and you say,
00:02:38.65\00:02:42.59
What kind of world
will they grow up in?
00:02:42.62\00:02:45.63
I've got some
incredibly good news for you.
00:02:45.66\00:02:48.56
The book of Daniel, linked
with the book of Revelation,
00:02:48.60\00:02:52.70
provides for us keys
regarding the future.
00:02:52.73\00:02:57.41
Deuteronomy, Chapter 29,
and Verse 29, puts it this way:
00:02:57.44\00:03:02.44
Notice there are some
things that are secret.
00:03:14.09\00:03:17.09
There may be some things about
the future we'd like to know,
00:03:17.13\00:03:20.73
but they're not revealed.
00:03:20.76\00:03:24.07
But I give God
credit for making most plain
00:03:24.10\00:03:27.80
what's most important.
00:03:27.84\00:03:29.50
And so the things that God
has revealed are for us to know.

What does our text
say? It's very clear.
00:03:34.44\00:03:37.68
So the things that are
revealed are very clear.

Tonight we're going
to the book of Daniel.
00:03:52.96\00:03:55.56
And we're going to look there
at an ancient dream that the
00:03:55.60\00:04:00.14
Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar
had in his bedroom.
00:04:00.17\00:04:04.51
And as we study that dream
we see how history has been
00:04:04.54\00:04:09.34
following
prophecy for 2500 years.
00:04:09.38\00:04:13.01
The Bible predicted that four
of the great nations that would
00:04:13.05\00:04:17.19
ever rule the world, from
Daniel's day down to our day.
00:04:17.22\00:04:21.46
Daniel the prophet lived
about 600 years before Christ.
00:04:21.49\00:04:27.00
He was a teenager when he
was taken captive into Babylon
00:04:27.03\00:04:31.47
by King Nebuchadnezzar.
00:04:31.50\00:04:32.97
And one night King
Nebuchadnezzar went
00:04:33.00\00:04:35.90
to sleep and had a dream.
00:04:35.94\00:04:37.87
And in that dream the Scripture
puts it this way in Daniel,
00:04:37.91\00:04:43.41
the 2nd Chapter, Verse 1.
00:04:43.45\00:04:45.15
Now you may have gone to
sleep one night and had a dream,
00:04:51.75\00:04:56.06
and you wake up the
next morning and you say,
00:04:56.09\00:04:58.43
Well, what did I dream?
00:04:58.46\00:04:59.79
Something very similar
happened to Nebuchadnezzar.
00:04:59.83\00:05:02.66
The Scripture says:
00:05:02.70\00:05:04.50
In other words, the king
went to sleep, had a dream.
00:05:08.67\00:05:11.61
He woke up,
couldn't remember his dream,
00:05:11.64\00:05:14.91
and was really
troubled about it.
00:05:14.94\00:05:16.85
He knew that the
dream had significance,
00:05:16.88\00:05:20.32
eternal significance,
but he couldn't remember it.
00:05:20.35\00:05:23.32
So as he was troubled, the
king called all of his wise men
00:05:23.35\00:05:30.16
to his kingly royal chamber to
help him understand the dream.
00:05:30.19\00:05:36.46
And so Daniel,
Chapter 2, Verse 4.
00:05:36.50\00:05:40.04
Now the king is wise.
00:05:51.75\00:05:53.25
You see the wise men say to
him, King, you know, you just
00:05:53.28\00:05:57.39
tell us what you dreamt in
your bedroom the night before,
00:05:57.42\00:06:00.79
and we'll tell you the meaning.
00:06:00.82\00:06:02.49
Well, the king was too wise for
that, because if he told them
00:06:02.52\00:06:05.99
what he dreamed, they could
make up any interpretation,
00:06:06.03\00:06:10.03
and then he would have no
way of verifying whether that
00:06:10.07\00:06:12.47
was right or wrong.
00:06:12.50\00:06:13.84
So he said, No, if you
can't tell me what I dreamed
00:06:13.87\00:06:15.94
last night, how are you
ever going to tell me what it
00:06:15.97\00:06:18.87
means in the future?
00:06:18.91\00:06:20.24
So if you're wise,
tell me what did I dream?
00:06:20.28\00:06:24.58
Now the Bible says the
astrologers were there.
00:06:24.61\00:06:27.52
They are people that
supposedly can read the
00:06:27.55\00:06:29.92
future from the stars.
00:06:29.95\00:06:31.29
It says the
magicians were there.
00:06:31.32\00:06:33.15
The Babylonian magicians would
often cut the liver of a cow,
00:06:33.19\00:06:37.76
and they would look at
the design of the liver,
00:06:37.79\00:06:40.66
and supposedly try
to tell the future.
00:06:40.70\00:06:42.66
They would drop water on oil,
watch the pattern that would
00:06:42.70\00:06:48.34
develop, and try to
therefore tell the future.
00:06:48.37\00:06:52.04
And there were varied
incantations that they used
00:06:52.07\00:06:58.15
to tell the future.
00:06:58.18\00:06:59.51
And the king
said, Look, you tell me,
00:06:59.55\00:07:01.15
what did I dream last
night? What does it mean?
00:07:01.18\00:07:04.25
They said, King,
that's not possible!
00:07:04.29\00:07:07.46
In fact he said to them,
Therefore tell me the dream,
00:07:07.49\00:07:12.29
and I'll know that you can
give me its interpretation.
00:07:12.33\00:07:14.83
And the king says, If
you don't tell me the dream,
00:07:14.86\00:07:17.47
certainly you're not
going to be able to tell me
00:07:17.50\00:07:19.27
the interpretation.
00:07:19.30\00:07:20.64
And what do they say?
00:07:20.67\00:07:22.00
In other words they
acknowledge it's impossible!

Nobody can do,
King, what you're asking.

Nobody can tell you what
you dreamt and what it means.

You tell us. What did you dream?
00:07:34.65\00:07:36.72
The King says, Look, you
either tell me what I dreamt,
00:07:36.75\00:07:39.32
or your head's
going to come off, arms,
00:07:39.35\00:07:41.66
I'm going to chop them off.
00:07:41.69\00:07:43.02
You're going to be annihilated.
00:07:43.06\00:07:44.39
You're going to be destroyed.
00:07:44.43\00:07:45.76
Fear went
through the whole empire.
00:07:45.79\00:07:48.50
Daniel was not one of those
wise men, but he was educated
00:07:48.53\00:07:54.90
in the University of Babylon.
00:07:54.94\00:07:56.27
So when the decree went forth
it impacted Daniel, as well as
00:07:56.30\00:07:59.77
the rest of the wise men.
00:07:59.81\00:08:01.14
Daniel came in before the
king, and he said, Tell me King,
00:08:01.18\00:08:06.51
do you really need to know the
interpretation of this dream?
00:08:06.55\00:08:12.52
If it is so significant
give me time, and let me pray.

Have you ever faced a
critical moment in your life?
00:08:17.73\00:08:22.56
Something that you
could not get through?
00:08:22.60\00:08:26.60
Some mountain you had to climb?
00:08:26.63\00:08:29.54
Some great difficulty that you
had to, you were experiencing?
00:08:29.57\00:08:34.01
God still answers prayer.
00:08:34.04\00:08:37.58
God still comes
in the quietness,
00:08:37.61\00:08:40.32
when we have problems
that seem to be overwhelming,
00:08:40.35\00:08:43.69
problems that we cannot solve.
00:08:43.72\00:08:46.15
The king gave Daniel that time.
00:08:46.19\00:08:49.89
And as he did,
Daniel went into his bedroom
00:08:49.92\00:08:53.33
and he began to seek God.
00:08:53.36\00:08:54.70
And Daniel opened his heart
to God, and the mysteries of
00:08:54.73\00:08:59.00
eternity were
revealed to Daniel.
00:08:59.03\00:09:01.40
And he began to not only
understand what the king had
00:09:01.44\00:09:03.94
dreamed in his bedroom,
but he began to understand
00:09:03.97\00:09:06.47
what that dream meant.
00:09:06.51\00:09:08.81
That night Daniel had
great assurance, great hope,
00:09:08.84\00:09:13.08
great confidence that
God had revealed to him
00:09:13.11\00:09:18.22
the mysteries of the future.
00:09:18.25\00:09:20.96
And Daniel said, Daniel 2:23.
00:09:20.99\00:09:23.66
Now notice two things
about God: He gives us wisdom,
00:09:29.06\00:09:32.23
and He gives us might.
00:09:32.27\00:09:33.60
When you don't know what to
do, you know just what to do.
00:09:33.64\00:09:36.10
To seek God for wisdom, to
seek God for understanding,
00:09:36.14\00:09:40.74
and to seek God for strength.
00:09:40.78\00:09:42.74
God is the God of wisdom,
and God is the God of might.
00:09:42.78\00:09:47.52
He reveals the future.
00:09:47.55\00:09:49.68
But not only does
He reveal the future,
00:09:49.72\00:09:51.62
He is the
architect of the future.
00:09:51.65\00:09:53.79
Kingdoms rise and fall at
the hands of the Almighty God,

who architects, who
guides, directs the future.

And then Daniel says this
as he comes in before the king.

Now notice what
Daniel does not say.

He doesn't say there
might be a God in heaven.

He might, He doesn't
say there it's possible that
00:10:11.41\00:10:13.54
there a God in heaven.
00:10:13.58\00:10:14.91
He doesn't say
it's highly likely that
00:10:14.94\00:10:16.41
there a God in
heaven. What does He say?

Notice He goes on...
00:10:21.48\00:10:22.88
Now there are three
things about this text
00:10:28.79\00:10:31.69
that are significant to us.
00:10:31.73\00:10:33.50
The first phrase we've noticed.
00:10:33.53\00:10:35.26
Second, what does that God do?
00:10:38.37\00:10:41.04
He's not silent.
He reveals secrets.
00:10:41.10\00:10:44.51
He opens up the
mysteries of the future.
00:10:44.57\00:10:47.91
Thirdly, He's made known to
King Nebuchadnezzar what will
00:10:47.94\00:10:51.91
be in the latter days.
00:10:51.95\00:10:53.38
So this dream will take
us from Nebuchadnezzar's time
00:10:53.42\00:10:57.82
down the stream of time.
00:10:57.85\00:10:59.75
This dream will take
us to the very last days
00:10:59.79\00:11:04.16
of Earth's history.
00:11:04.19\00:11:05.69
And Daniel then begins
to describe what the king
00:11:05.73\00:11:10.00
dreamt in his bedroom.
00:11:10.03\00:11:11.37
It must be incredibly amazing
for that king to sit and listen
00:11:11.40\00:11:17.91
to this very dream.
00:11:17.94\00:11:19.27
King, you saw this great image.
00:11:28.05\00:11:31.35
And I suppose that King
Nebuchadnezzar sat on the end
00:11:31.39\00:11:34.96
of his chair and he
said, Daniel, that's it!
00:11:34.99\00:11:37.03
That's exactly what I saw!
00:11:37.06\00:11:39.29
I saw this great image!
00:11:39.33\00:11:41.50
Daniel then begins to
describe the image to the king.
00:11:41.53\00:11:45.23
That's it Daniel!
That's exactly what I saw!

An image: head of gold,
breast and arms of silver,

thighs of brass, legs of
iron, feet of iron and clay.

And king, not only that,
but king, there is something

else that you saw.

Daniel, how did you know?

Daniel, that's exactly
what I saw: a great image.

Then I saw the rock come.

It smashed the image.
00:12:28.51\00:12:29.84
It ground it to powder.

That's exactly what I saw!

Now if you were the
king, what would you be

wondering at this point?

You know, Daniel went
on as he describes it;

This image was crushed totally.

And what then happened?

The wind carried them away.

No trace was found for them.

You can just imagine
how the king's heart is

beating faster, and faster.

He's anticipating
the meaning of the dream.

Let's summarize;
what did the king see?

He saw an image. In that
image there was a head of gold.
00:13:21.40\00:13:26.07
In that image there was
the breast and arms of silver,
00:13:26.10\00:13:30.74
the thighs of
brass, the legs of iron,

the feet of iron and clay.
00:13:33.14\00:13:35.14
Then a rock comes and
smashes the image to powder.
00:13:35.18\00:13:40.22
And the rock becomes a mountain
that fills the whole earth.

Now if you were the
king, what would you be

wondering about next?

Exactly, you'd
wonder what does it mean?

What is the
interpretation of the dream?

In other words,
Daniel is saying, God and I

The God that reveals secrets
is the God that will tell

the interpretation.

You know, some people
think that Bible prophecy is all

a matter of guess work.

Their idea is that you really
can't tell very much about

prophecy; that everybody has
their own interpretation of it.

It's kind of like,
let's suppose we want to

interpret the prophecy.

What does the
head of gold represent?

What do the breast and
arms of silver represent?

What do the thighs
of brass represent?
00:14:51.09\00:14:52.89
What do the legs of
iron represent, etcetera?
00:14:52.95\00:14:54.89
So what if I passed out a piece
of paper to each one of you,

and said, Write what you
think the interpretation is,

and we'll put it in a hat.

I'll close my eyes.

I'll pull the
interpretation out of the hat.

Is that a good way
to interpret prophecy?

Well, 2 Peter 1
says, No prophecy is of

private interpretation.

The same God that
gives the prophecy enables us

to understand prophecy.

So for every prophecy that
God gives, that God explains

the prophecy to us.

That's why Daniel

So God and Daniel
were in partnership.

Daniel begins now to explain
the meaning of the dream.

There can be no question
about that; no question about

that interpretation.
It's very simple.

Daniel says to Nebuchadnezzar,
You, your kingdom,

represents this head of gold.
00:16:05.43\00:16:09.43
You, as king of the Babylonian
empire, are the representative
00:16:09.46\00:16:15.44
empire in this dream.
00:16:15.50\00:16:18.77
You are the first
empire in the entire dream.
00:16:18.81\00:16:21.78
Now gold was a very
fitting symbol for Babylon.
00:16:21.81\00:16:25.28
Babylon ruled the
world from 605 to 539 BC.
00:16:25.31\00:16:30.29
It was then, of course, defeated
by the Medes and Persians.
00:16:30.32\00:16:32.59
Gold was a symbol that
was used throughout Babylon.
00:16:32.62\00:16:37.36
It was used quite
lavishly throughout the empire.
00:16:37.39\00:16:40.33
If you look at the nation of
Babylon, or the city of Babylon,
00:16:40.36\00:16:44.40
Babylon was about a 130 or
40 miles South of modern Bagdad.
00:16:44.43\00:16:52.31
It was really a fantastic city.
00:16:52.34\00:16:54.31
The River Euphrates ran
through the center of Babylon,
00:16:54.34\00:16:57.38
giving it a
constant water supply.
00:16:57.41\00:16:59.65
The Babylonians also
had a twenty year food
00:16:59.68\00:17:03.39
supply within the city.
00:17:03.42\00:17:04.75
And we're told when the Medes
and Persians surrounded them
00:17:04.79\00:17:07.66
under Cyrus, some of the
soldiers could have gone up on
00:17:07.69\00:17:11.26
the walls and actually
taunted the Medes and Persians,
00:17:11.29\00:17:13.90
and said, You know,
you've surrounded us.
00:17:13.93\00:17:15.40
You think you're going to
starve us out in this siege,
00:17:15.46\00:17:17.93
but we have enough
food here for twenty years.
00:17:18.00\00:17:22.10
Gold was
lavishly used in Babylon.
00:17:22.14\00:17:25.24
Just to get an idea of
the lavishness of the city,
00:17:25.27\00:17:28.04
Babylon was
about ten miles around.
00:17:28.11\00:17:31.08
That the
historian, Herodotus said.
00:17:31.11\00:17:34.02
Some feel that may be a
little large, but it certainly
00:17:34.05\00:17:36.79
was an amazing city.
00:17:36.82\00:17:38.15
To compare it to Rome; Rome was
about six miles in circumference
00:17:38.19\00:17:42.12
around, Athens four miles.
00:17:42.16\00:17:44.39
So Babylon was one
of the, certainly the
00:17:44.43\00:17:46.86
wonders of the world.
00:17:46.90\00:17:48.23
The hanging gardens of Babylon,
built for Nebuchadnezzar's
00:17:48.26\00:17:53.00
Lebanese wife, were one
of the marvels of the world.
00:17:53.03\00:17:56.81
The architecture was
just quite incredible.
00:17:56.84\00:18:00.58
The Babylonians had
thirteen different god's.
00:18:00.61\00:18:04.31
Bel Marduk was the
chief god of Babylon.
00:18:04.35\00:18:07.35
And the temple to Bel
Marduk was 300 feet high.
00:18:07.38\00:18:12.25
Now if you're a builder,
you know that about one story is
00:18:12.29\00:18:15.52
10 to 12 feet, and so picture
a building 30 stories high.
00:18:15.56\00:18:20.73
Just quite an
amazing temple to Bel Marduk.
00:18:20.80\00:18:25.33
Now Bel Marduk was a golden
god who sat in that temple.
00:18:25.40\00:18:29.80
And the temple contained 18
tons, that's 18 tons of gold.
00:18:29.84\00:18:36.81
The god Bel Marduk, a golden
god, sat on a golden throne,
00:18:36.85\00:18:40.55
before a golden
table, by a golden altar.
00:18:40.58\00:18:43.32
So gold was lavishly
used through Babylon,
00:18:43.35\00:18:46.02
and certainly a marvelous
symbol of the nation of Babylon.
00:18:46.05\00:18:51.73
But yet, whereas Nebuchadnezzar
had wished the entire image

was all of gold, where he would
have wished that there was no
00:18:57.50\00:19:03.14
breast and arms of
silver, and thighs of brass,
00:19:03.17\00:19:05.34
and legs of iron,
representing another kingdom.
00:19:05.37\00:19:07.51
Notice the Scripture says in
00:19:07.54\00:19:09.18
Now there is a descending
value as you go: gold,
00:19:13.85\00:19:18.22
silver, brass, and iron.
00:19:18.25\00:19:20.46
There's this descending
value indicating moral decline,
00:19:20.49\00:19:25.16
indicating the decay
in these various empires.
00:19:25.19\00:19:30.00
So Daniel says to
Nebuchadnezzar, After you shall
00:19:30.03\00:19:34.80
arise another kingdom.
00:19:34.84\00:19:36.17

the image, there's a beast that

authority for one hour as
