Tonight I want to begin with
a particular scripture that is

really, really important.
00:07:15.43\00:07:17.03
But before we go to that, I want
to tell you a very short story.
00:07:17.07\00:07:20.77
I did not know my mother
until I was almost 26 years old.
00:07:21.87\00:07:25.21
I did not know my father
until I was almost 13 years old.
00:07:25.91\00:07:30.35
Did not know my natural parents.
00:07:30.38\00:07:32.28
And I had a
struggle with my identity
00:07:32.95\00:07:35.28
growing up as a young boy.
00:07:35.32\00:07:36.65
And I remember
listening to a radio program.
00:07:36.69\00:07:39.32
Maybe you have heard her name.
00:07:39.35\00:07:41.12
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
00:07:41.16\00:07:43.49
She used to be on the radio.
Very significant counselor.
00:07:44.03\00:07:47.00
And a young lady called
in, and Dr. Laura is listening
00:07:47.30\00:07:50.00
to this young lady as
she was complaining about
00:07:50.03\00:07:52.23
what her mother
didn't give to her.
00:07:52.53\00:07:53.94
She said, "My mother and
dad didn't give me anything."
00:07:53.97\00:07:56.74
And she was very angry.
00:07:57.61\00:07:59.11
And Dr. Laura broke in and said,
00:07:59.14\00:08:00.98
"What did your
parents give to you?"
00:08:01.18\00:08:03.65
And she said, "Nothing."
00:08:04.28\00:08:05.65
She said, "Young lady, what
did your parents give to you?"
00:08:05.68\00:08:08.65
She said, "They
didn't give me anything."
00:08:08.75\00:08:10.55
She said, "They
did give you something.
00:08:10.59\00:08:12.09
What did they give to you?"
00:08:12.12\00:08:13.52
She said, "Young lady,
your parents gave you life.
00:08:13.56\00:08:18.23
Take that life and
do something with it,

and stop
complaining about your past."

And you know, as a
young boy, as a teenager,
00:08:25.53\00:08:28.04
that helped me begin
to put into perspective,
00:08:28.07\00:08:30.17
as I was trying
to find out who I am,
00:08:30.21\00:08:32.31
not knowing my natural
parents, that helped me put into
00:08:32.81\00:08:35.91
perspective, we can spend
so much time trying to sort out
00:08:35.94\00:08:40.02
our past or we can embrace
the fact that we have life,
00:08:40.05\00:08:44.69
or that we have a
new life in Jesus.
00:08:44.92\00:08:47.56
And as Dr. Laura says,
we can take that life and
00:08:47.59\00:08:50.16
do something with it.
00:08:50.19\00:08:51.79
But that's not an easy question.
00:08:53.40\00:08:54.93
Because in one of the most
famous chapters in the Bible,
00:08:54.96\00:08:58.33
John 3, where John 3:16 is,
00:08:58.37\00:09:00.90
the story of
Nicodemus begins that chapter,
00:09:02.07\00:09:04.84
and many people
don't know that when Jesus
00:09:04.87\00:09:07.68
repeated the words
that now are John 3:16,
00:09:07.98\00:09:10.55
the most famous
verse in the world,
00:09:10.58\00:09:12.91
that He was talking to an
older man who was a Pharisee.
00:09:13.21\00:09:16.92
Notice the conversation.
00:09:16.95\00:09:18.32
He said to this man...
00:09:18.35\00:09:19.69
And by the way, the
Bible says that when Nicodemus
00:09:19.72\00:09:22.42
came to Jesus, he
came to Jesus by night.
00:09:22.46\00:09:26.66
And I say it's better
to come to Jesus by night
00:09:27.23\00:09:29.76
than not to come to Him at all.
00:09:29.80\00:09:32.27
When your life is
dark and hope is dark,
00:09:33.10\00:09:35.10
and hope seems
to be slipping away,
00:09:35.14\00:09:36.87
and your understanding
is dark, and the future
00:09:37.21\00:09:39.51
doesn't seem to make sense,
00:09:39.54\00:09:41.14
a good time to come to
Jesus is when your life is dark.
00:09:41.18\00:09:45.98
Very religious
man, He came to Jesus.
00:09:46.85\00:09:49.25
And Jesus said that he
needed a new beginning.
00:09:49.55\00:09:53.59
We'll talk about
that in just a moment.
00:09:53.76\00:09:55.22
But here's the question
that is very significant
00:09:55.26\00:09:57.69
for the entire
presentation tonight.
00:09:58.26\00:10:00.86
"Nicodemus said to
Him," that is to Jesus...
00:10:01.16\00:10:03.50
Now Nicodemus was
very well educated.
00:10:14.81\00:10:17.48
He was a Pharisee.
00:10:17.75\00:10:19.11
He was not
intellectually ignorant.
00:10:19.15\00:10:21.62
He may have understood biology,
but he was spiritually inept.
00:10:21.82\00:10:25.52
And he knew that Jesus was
saying, and here's the point...
00:10:26.96\00:10:29.72
Oh, thank You,
Lord, for this point.
00:10:29.92\00:10:31.59
We are never too
old to be born again.
00:10:31.86\00:10:35.83
And you'll discover that
one of the greatest barriers
00:10:38.23\00:10:40.70
in Christianity today
is that like Nicodemus
00:10:40.74\00:10:44.51
people have been doing
religious things for so long
00:10:44.54\00:10:48.88
that they become accustomed
to the religion in their lives,
00:10:49.64\00:10:53.01
but they never meet Jesus.
00:10:53.05\00:10:55.52
They are never born again.
00:10:55.75\00:10:58.02
Think about it for a moment.
00:10:58.29\00:10:59.62
Nicodemus was a Jewish Pharisee.
00:10:59.82\00:11:01.79
He kept the Sabbath,
but he did not know Jesus.
00:11:01.82\00:11:04.39
He had the right diet,
but he did not know Jesus.
00:11:04.86\00:11:08.03
He understood all the
ceremonial and moral laws,
00:11:08.06\00:11:11.53
but he did not know Jesus.
00:11:11.57\00:11:14.24
And here he is, advanced in
years, and Jesus says to him,
00:11:14.84\00:11:19.44
"You need a new beginning."
00:11:19.47\00:11:21.04
And he says, "Can it
happen when I'm old?"
00:11:21.54\00:11:25.11
Well let me say to you tonight,
and those of you that may be
00:11:25.15\00:11:27.02
listening and
watching the program,
00:11:27.05\00:11:28.55
we are never too
old to come to Jesus.
00:11:29.28\00:11:32.55
As I told you a few
nights ago, that couple that
00:11:33.66\00:11:35.69
came to our church,
one was 78 and one was 79,
00:11:35.72\00:11:39.19
came from the
Presbyterian church.
00:11:39.23\00:11:41.40
Just walked into our church at
3ABN, and the question that this
00:11:41.50\00:11:46.37
elder of 40 years, he was an
elder in the Presbyterian church
00:11:46.40\00:11:49.77
for 40 years, he says to me,
00:11:49.80\00:11:53.04
"How old is too
old to be baptized?"
00:11:53.44\00:11:57.18
And I said, "As
long as you're breathing,
00:11:57.38\00:11:59.11
you can be baptized."
00:11:59.15\00:12:00.65
And he and his
wife got baptized.
00:12:00.92\00:12:02.42
And their son and
their daughter-in-law thought
00:12:02.45\00:12:04.75
they had lost their mind.
00:12:04.79\00:12:06.55
They said, "Dad, you
have lost your mind."
00:12:07.06\00:12:08.99
Well we studied with them and
baptized them two months later.
00:12:09.02\00:12:11.89
When the truth of
Jesus Christ comes to us,
00:12:13.36\00:12:15.60
it's never too
late to begin again.

It is never too late
to wash away our past.
00:12:18.57\00:12:22.04
I like the way
that David the psalmist
00:12:22.50\00:12:23.87
says it in Psalm 103:12.
00:12:23.91\00:12:25.74
He says, "As far as
the east is from the west,
00:12:25.77\00:12:30.55
so far has He removed
our transgressions from us."
00:12:30.75\00:12:35.58
And I think it's in
Micah 11:7 where the Bible says
00:12:35.95\00:12:39.35
He will cast our sins
into the depths of the sea
00:12:39.39\00:12:42.82
and put out a,
"No fishing," sign.
00:12:43.63\00:12:45.29
You didn't get that.
00:12:46.90\00:12:48.23
I added the last part.

I am so glad that there
are certain parts of the ocean
00:12:51.37\00:12:53.94
where man cannot go.

That's where my sins are found.

What about yours?

The Lord removes our
sins, throws them into the
00:12:59.24\00:13:02.44
Marianas Trench
in the Pacific Ocean,

and says, "You
better not go down there."

Praise the Lord for that.
00:13:09.15\00:13:10.49
But as we dive into
this very important topic of
00:13:10.52\00:13:13.56
beginning again, one of
the things that we have to
00:13:13.59\00:13:15.46
keep in mind, which was
the battle in Nicodemus' life,
00:13:15.49\00:13:17.96
is that Nicodemus was
intellectually stimulated.
00:13:18.16\00:13:22.06
He was very well educated.
00:13:22.10\00:13:24.57
He knew what
religion was all about,
00:13:24.60\00:13:26.43
but he did not know Jesus.
00:13:26.47\00:13:27.97
And one of the dangers of
modern religion today is this:
00:13:28.37\00:13:31.91
So many people
are comfortable with
00:13:32.87\00:13:35.01
what religion gives to them.
00:13:35.04\00:13:36.44
And so people
go church shopping.
00:13:36.48\00:13:38.48
Some people say, "I like
the choir in that church.
00:13:38.88\00:13:41.95
I like the music program."
00:13:41.98\00:13:43.32
Other people say, "I
like the community program
00:13:43.35\00:13:45.45
that church has."
00:13:45.49\00:13:46.86
Some people say, "You
know, it's really nice.
00:13:47.12\00:13:49.19
This church is so connected to
the college, the universities."
00:13:49.22\00:13:52.33
"I like the pastor's sermons."
00:13:52.76\00:13:54.10
He talks about, you know,
maybe like Pastor Joel Osteen,
00:13:54.13\00:13:56.46
he talks about how
your ship is coming in,
00:13:56.50\00:13:58.37
how your future is
going to be bright.
00:13:58.63\00:14:00.50
And we have all
these reasons to sometimes
00:14:00.87\00:14:03.94
choose to design
our own religion.
00:14:03.97\00:14:07.18
But one of the dangers
in modern religion is this:
00:14:07.71\00:14:10.85
Many Christians, quote unquote,
have been busy in things
00:14:11.11\00:14:17.09
of Christianity but have
not had a connection with Jesus.
00:14:17.12\00:14:21.59
And the danger in the last
days is to do religious things
00:14:22.32\00:14:25.79
but never have a
connection with Jesus.
00:14:25.83\00:14:27.80
That's the reason why Jesus
wrote these words as He did
00:14:27.83\00:14:30.70
in Matthew 7:21-23.
00:14:30.73\00:14:33.60
This is a very
significant caution
00:14:33.94\00:14:36.91
to the
Christians of the last days.
00:14:37.21\00:14:38.84
Notice what He said.
00:14:38.87\00:14:40.21
This is a sad verse.
00:14:50.65\00:14:52.42
And then the saddest
of all verses, verse 23.
00:15:08.44\00:15:11.84
Christianity is far
more important than religion.
00:15:23.79\00:15:28.69
Because in these last days
we are told we are living in the
00:15:29.12\00:15:32.16
last church of the
seven churches of Revelation.
00:15:32.19\00:15:34.66
We're living just
before the coming of Jesus.
00:15:35.20\00:15:37.03
And the words of
Jesus were, "Take heed that
00:15:37.07\00:15:39.43
no one deceives you."
00:15:39.47\00:15:41.70
Which means religion
today can be, in many respects,
00:15:41.80\00:15:45.81
deceptive, giving
us the things we like
00:15:45.84\00:15:49.41
by leaving out a
relationship with Jesus.
00:15:49.81\00:15:52.38
And let me make a point
that I did a few nights ago.
00:15:52.55\00:15:54.45
It is not possible to
have a relationship with Jesus
00:15:54.48\00:15:57.72
and have truth deleted
from that relationship.
00:15:57.82\00:16:01.99
If you have a
relationship with Jesus,
00:16:02.22\00:16:04.13
it has to be
based on His Holy Spirit
00:16:04.16\00:16:06.59
and the truth of His Word.
00:16:06.63\00:16:08.60
But the Bible is clear about
the conditions of the last days.

Notice Isaiah the prophet.
00:16:12.60\00:16:14.07
Very striking
comparison to religion today.

Speaking of the last days.
00:16:20.31\00:16:21.88
Look at this.
00:16:25.95\00:16:27.28
"We will eat our own food..."
00:16:27.32\00:16:29.45
That is, our own doctrines.
00:16:29.48\00:16:31.52
"...our own..."
00:16:31.55\00:16:33.19
"...and wear our own apparel..."
00:16:33.76\00:16:36.06
Our own righteousness.
00:16:36.09\00:16:38.56
But what do I want from you?
00:16:39.39\00:16:40.73
"...to take away our reproach."
00:16:45.90\00:16:47.57
And today people are
being called, Christians,
00:16:47.60\00:16:50.74
but they have
their own righteousness,
00:16:50.87\00:16:53.31
their own brand of religion,
they have their own doctrines.
00:16:53.34\00:16:56.75
They pick from the Word of God.
00:16:56.78\00:16:58.31
That's why, if you think about
it today, you have phrases like,

"New Testament church."
00:17:01.22\00:17:02.65
Which means you don't
read the Old Testament.
00:17:03.55\00:17:05.52
Which means you don't understand
seven-eighths of the Bible.
00:17:05.92\00:17:09.82
Then you have churches that say,
"We are non-denominational."
00:17:11.26\00:17:14.26
Which means, "We
don't talk about doctrines."
00:17:14.30\00:17:16.03
Well in fact, I told
you, when you go to a bank
00:17:16.06\00:17:18.40
and ask for change
for a hundred dollar bill,
00:17:18.43\00:17:20.00
it's going to be
some denomination.
00:17:20.04\00:17:21.87
Am I right?

So there's no way to
be a religion and not be
00:17:24.17\00:17:26.14
connected to some denomination.
00:17:26.17\00:17:27.88
Many years ago when we
were in the Heritage Singers,

my wife and I, we did
a concert there at the
00:17:30.21\00:17:33.78
Crystal Cathedral
in southern California.

And Robert Schuller
said his church was a
00:17:36.05\00:17:37.89
non-denominational church.

But in the bulletin
in the foyer it said,

"We are non-denominational.
00:17:41.26\00:17:42.72
However, we teach
the doctrines of the
00:17:42.76\00:17:45.09
holy mother church,
the Roman Catholic Church."
00:17:45.13\00:17:47.73
So every church is
connected to some denomination
00:17:48.33\00:17:50.60
by their beliefs.
00:17:50.63\00:17:52.00
But the Bible says in the
last days people will say,
00:17:52.33\00:17:55.04
"I want my own doctrines."
00:17:55.07\00:17:56.71
And there are those that
say, "I want the Sabbath.

I don't want the Sabbath."
00:17:59.01\00:18:00.34
"I believe in the state of
the dead, but I do believe,
00:18:00.38\00:18:02.64
no, I don't believe in that.
00:18:02.68\00:18:04.01
I believe that people
die and go to heaven."
00:18:04.05\00:18:05.78
"I don't believe in the
fact that you can eat anything."
00:18:06.08\00:18:08.45
But some people say,
"Well you can eat anything."
00:18:08.48\00:18:10.65
Designer religion is a
deception of the last days.
00:18:10.69\00:18:14.19
Nothing to me is more
important than knowing
00:18:14.39\00:18:17.49
that what I
follow and what I believe
00:18:17.79\00:18:20.50
and who I follow will end up
with me being saved eternally.
00:18:20.53\00:18:26.07
That's all I want to be.

That's why the
Lord made it clear.

Notice His words.

These appeal to
Christians of the last days.

"Why do you call
Me, 'Lord, Lord'?"
00:18:41.38\00:18:42.88
And there are many Christians
today, that's why there's

so much religious controversy.
00:18:44.62\00:18:47.09
Because, "I'll call you, 'Lord,'
00:18:47.82\00:18:49.16
but don't tell
me to do anything.
00:18:49.19\00:18:51.03
I'll do what I want to do."
00:18:52.19\00:18:53.53
There are people that have been
in the church many, many years.
00:18:53.56\00:18:55.76
They do what they want to do.
00:18:55.80\00:18:57.33
And the sad reality is this:

Like Cain, they bring a
sacrifice of their own desire
00:19:00.84\00:19:05.64
to God, and they
say, "Accept it."

And He says, "No, I will not."

And from the days of Cain
and Abel, there have always been
00:19:11.01\00:19:14.15
two groups of worshipers.

Those that give
God what He asks for,

and those that
give God what He wants.

What He does not want.

And we've got to
make sure, by God's grace,

that we are in
the proper category.

That's why when the Spirit
of God comes into our lives,

Bible says He will do.

Whenever truth is revealed
to you and you reject it,

are led by the Spirit of God.

Because He will not guide
you into some, but how much?

That's why we
have to follow Jesus.

When Jesus went out
selecting disciples,
