with a story tonight.

That's not a picture of it.
It was much older than that.

But my wife and I
lived in the mountains of

northern California,
and I remember very well

I had a candy apple
red Honda motorcycle

which I really, really enjoyed.

But she made me
choose between the motorcycle

and the computer.

And she said to me, "I
think you will live longer

with the computer
than with the motorcycle."

So I got excited and
bought my first Tandy Company

there, because I knew I had

do to get that computer to work.

And there was a technical,
the technician on the other end

was a lady, and she said,
"Sir, can I ask you a question?"

plug it into the wall?"

And I crawled under my

And I learned a valuable lesson.

That was my opening story

And the point of the matter
is, I learned, until we are

connected, there
is no power available

to live the Christian life.

That's why tonight in John
15:5 notice the words of Jesus.

He made it very clear.
We need to be connected.

That computer was brand new.

Let me go even deeper.

You may have a
brand new walk with Jesus,

but if you fail to connect
to the power that's available

only through His Holy Spirit,
you may be intellectually

connected, but
spiritually disconnected.

No power to break
the bonds of the former

life that you have lived.

And I've learned
that through the years

in some difficult ways.

That you need to pray every
day for the power of Christ

Jesus emphasizes

One of the first ways, if

growing as a Christian,

ways of getting connected

is, you've got to
stay in the Word of God.

You've got to abide in His Word.

"If you abide in Me and
My word abides in you..."

The word, abide,
doesn't mean, glance.

It doesn't mean, run
through the Word of God.

It means, put the Word of
God before you on a daily basis

as if your life depended on the
Word of God being in your heart.

But my spiritual appetite
takes off like a hungry lion

So tonight, remember, one of the
first things that we need to do

to abide and to have
that daily power in our lives

is to read the Word of God.

Every day we've got to have
the Word of God in our lives.

Something else I've
learned is, when we were born

we were connected, but we were
connected to the wrong source.

We were connected to a
source that can only produce

in us fruits
that result in death.

Spiritual death
and physical death.

That's why the Bible
says, "There's a way that

seems right unto a
man, but in the end thereof

is the way of death."

And so, unless you have a
devised plan in your life,

you've got to remember there
are principles in the Bible

that we cannot break away
from and we cannot ignore them

if we hope to have a growing
relationship with Christ.

We were born
connected, but what and who

connection with our natural,

I've met people that talk about,
you know, we have people that

come to our church, they
say, "Hey, I like your diet."

So they become vegetarians.

But they don't accept Jesus.

Some people say, "I really
like the fact that you guys

go to church on
the Bible Sabbath."

So they come on Sabbath.

But they don't accept Jesus.

So the proper exercise
without Christ in your life

is just an exercise.

You've got to have Jesus
and His power in your life

You know when they get to that

They're inhaling because
they're coming back with...

and the mother said,

He didn't care.

smiling, but here's my point.

The nature that Adam
has given to us is corrupt,

about anybody but itself.

people are unregenerated,

that are happening in society.

They would lie, steal, cheat.

They'll do everything to
satisfy the nature that is

Something else we also
have to keep in mind is,

the nature of Adam,
look at this picture,

the nature that we are born with
is first an enslaving power.

Is an enslaving power.

And then it is a
controlling power.

It enslaves.

It gets a hold of you.

It's like putting a dog
on a leash and walking him.

Dogs don't necessarily
want to go where their

owners want them to go.

But because they're on a
leash, they have no choice.

When sin handcuffs us, it takes
us where we may not want to go,

handcuffed to that nature

we have no choice.

When sin handcuffs us, like a
slave, it first enslaves us...

crying we go into the direction

going to take us naturally.

about what happens when you die

means absolutely nothing.

Because if you're just
intellectually absorbing

things that make you more
informed without knowing Christ,

you'll be the
most terrified person.

And all you'll have to do
is look forward to the judgment

and you'll have no freedom
and no peace in your life.

Sin is enslaving
and sin controls.

we do things that we hate,

Because sin is in control.

Like the law of
gravity, sin controls us.

When we talk about Jesus

chains are horrible,

to somebody that only wants to

wording. It's about slavery.

But in order for Jesus to
break our first connection...

In order for Jesus to
break our first connection,

He had to take on the
same nature that Adam had

after the fall.

Not the nature that
Adam had before the fall,

but the nature that

In order for Jesus to be our
Savior, He had to replace Adam.

To replace Adam, He had
to be subject to the very

same power that controlled Adam.

on the very same nature that

controlled Adam, but if
that nature led Him to sin,

about relying on His Father!

rely on His own human strength,

Look at the comparisons between
the Adam that would condemn us

and the Adam that would free us.

So Jesus became sin for us.

- He became what? ~ Sin.

Notice, He
didn't become a sinner.

He took on the nature.

The nature and the actions,
although one produces the other,
