Live from the 3ABN Worship Center, 00:00:39.74\00:00:42.60 welcome to the Pillars Of Our Faith event. 00:00:42.63\00:00:45.41 On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, 00:01:02.70\00:01:11.86 the emblem of suffering and shame. 00:01:11.89\00:01:19.47 And I love that old cross where the dearest and best 00:01:21.23\00:01:30.47 for a world of lost sinners was slain. 00:01:30.50\00:01:39.51 So I'll cherish the old rugged cross, 00:01:39.91\00:01:49.29 till my trophies at last I lay down. 00:01:49.32\00:01:57.43 I will cling to the old rugged cross, 00:01:58.39\00:02:07.47 and exchange it some day 00:02:08.13\00:02:13.03 for a crown. 00:02:13.06\00:02:21.11 To the old rugged cross I will ever be true, 00:02:22.72\00:02:31.84 its shame and its reproach gladly bear. 00:02:31.87\00:02:39.82 Then He'll call me some day to my home far away, 00:02:40.83\00:02:50.14 where His glory forever 00:02:50.17\00:02:57.01 I'll share. 00:02:57.05\00:03:04.09 So I'll cherish that 00:03:04.48\00:03:09.22 old rugged cross, 00:03:09.25\00:03:14.70 until my trophies at last I lay down. 00:03:14.73\00:03:22.63 Yes, I will cling to the old rugged cross, 00:03:22.66\00:03:32.36 and exchange it some day soon 00:03:32.39\00:03:37.32 for a crown. 00:03:37.35\00:03:42.43 I'll exchange it some day 00:03:42.46\00:03:51.33 for a crown. 00:03:52.78\00:04:00.96 Thank you Pastor Lomacang. 00:04:15.68\00:04:17.21 Well, our next speaker this evening is Shelley Quinn. 00:04:17.51\00:04:21.09 And she's been with us here at 3ABN now for several years 00:04:21.12\00:04:24.01 so we all know that she's a very gifted teacher. 00:04:24.04\00:04:26.68 She's also a very gifted author. 00:04:26.71\00:04:28.78 And she's an amazing author, as a matter of fact. 00:04:28.81\00:04:30.86 Just recently, the Lord impressed upon her heart 00:04:30.89\00:04:33.19 to write a book on prayer. 00:04:33.22\00:04:35.09 Pressing Into His Presence, I think is the name of it. 00:04:35.12\00:04:38.00 You know, it took her 24 days to write that book from 00:04:38.03\00:04:41.47 cover to cover. 00:04:41.50\00:04:42.50 She is a gracious lady, a lady of integrity and honor. 00:04:42.53\00:04:47.36 And I am just pleased to introduce her to you 00:04:47.39\00:04:49.82 this afternoon. 00:04:49.85\00:04:51.34 But before she comes, Reggie Smith is going to 00:04:51.37\00:04:53.74 come and sing for us as well, another one of 00:04:53.77\00:04:56.98 our Pillars songs. 00:04:57.01\00:04:58.16 Reggie, what's the name of the song you're going to sing? 00:04:58.19\00:05:00.35 Now Is The Day. 00:05:00.38\00:05:01.78 That was beautiful. 00:07:41.08\00:07:42.53 Well, it is so good to be here with you and it is my 00:07:43.82\00:07:46.91 great privilege today, to present to you 00:07:46.94\00:07:50.64 the doctrine of justification, sanctification, 00:07:50.67\00:07:54.85 and glorification. 00:07:54.88\00:07:56.85 That's my privilege. 00:07:56.88\00:07:57.85 The challenge is to get that all into this hour. 00:07:57.86\00:08:02.16 So let's go ahead and pray. 00:08:02.19\00:08:03.85 Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus 00:08:04.42\00:08:07.35 asking, Father, that You'll get me out of the way, 00:08:07.38\00:08:10.43 that You'll speak through me. 00:08:10.46\00:08:12.03 Send Your Holy Spirit to be our teacher, 00:08:12.06\00:08:14.22 give us ears to hear what the Holy Spirit has to say. 00:08:14.25\00:08:18.49 And may Your word change our life. 00:08:18.52\00:08:20.97 In Jesus' name, amen. 00:08:21.00\00:08:23.05 You know, we have already established that Satan 00:08:23.45\00:08:26.57 was created as Lucifer, a perfect angel. 00:08:26.60\00:08:30.83 And he was perfectly upright, in right standing with God. 00:08:30.86\00:08:36.78 But something happened when iniquity entered his heart. 00:08:36.81\00:08:40.69 What happened? 00:08:40.72\00:08:41.69 He fell, he became bent over with his sin. 00:08:41.90\00:08:45.40 So the first sin that was ever experienced was the sin of what? 00:08:45.43\00:08:52.77 Pride. Yes, amen. 00:08:53.31\00:08:55.50 Now, there's an interesting little scripture in Habakkuk 2:4 00:08:55.53\00:08:59.36 and it says this, "Behold the proud, 00:08:59.39\00:09:03.48 his soul is not upright in him. " 00:09:03.51\00:09:07.41 So the proud does not have an upright soul. 00:09:08.17\00:09:11.61 "But the just shall live by faith. " 00:09:11.64\00:09:14.48 Faith in what? 00:09:14.51\00:09:15.58 Faith in God's plan of salvation offered as a free gift to us 00:09:15.61\00:09:21.54 who will open our hearts to receive it. 00:09:21.57\00:09:24.48 Jesus Christ completed everything that we need for 00:09:25.10\00:09:29.91 justification, sanctification, and glorification. 00:09:29.94\00:09:32.83 It is all about His life, His righteousness, 00:09:32.86\00:09:36.63 about His work to accomplish the divine will of God. 00:09:36.66\00:09:41.34 And Jesus is magnified in everything, 00:09:41.37\00:09:46.21 for we live and move and have our being in Him. 00:09:46.24\00:09:50.91 Let me give you, before we... 00:09:51.72\00:09:53.35 What I'm going to do is just give you quick definitions of 00:09:53.38\00:09:56.39 justification, sanctification, and glorification. 00:09:56.42\00:09:58.93 Then we'll kind of delve into it as deep as time permits. 00:09:58.96\00:10:02.65 Justification is being judged as free of guilt. 00:10:02.68\00:10:08.17 We are put in right standing with God, made righteous 00:10:08.20\00:10:13.20 through the work that Jesus Christ accomplished for us. 00:10:13.23\00:10:17.32 How many of you have ever watched an episode of CSI? 00:10:17.35\00:10:20.52 We have a few people willing to admit it here. 00:10:21.18\00:10:23.31 For those of you who haven't and for our world viewers, 00:10:23.75\00:10:26.59 CSI is a program about crime scene investigators 00:10:26.62\00:10:31.32 who are going out and they are looking for forensic evidence. 00:10:31.35\00:10:35.64 Forensic evidence is evidence that you can bring before 00:10:35.67\00:10:38.40 a judge, either to prove the guilt or the innocence 00:10:38.43\00:10:42.96 of the accused. 00:10:42.99\00:10:44.87 Now, when we think about justification, this is a 00:10:44.90\00:10:49.58 forensic act, a judicial act of God. 00:10:49.61\00:10:54.11 And it is all about, justification is accomplished 00:10:54.14\00:10:59.15 through the imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ. 00:10:59.18\00:11:04.51 The righteousness that was credited to our overdrawn 00:11:04.54\00:11:09.47 spiritual bank account. 00:11:09.50\00:11:11.03 We have a debt that we could never repay. 00:11:11.06\00:11:14.52 Because the wages of sin is death. 00:11:14.55\00:11:17.81 So it's all about what Jesus has accomplished. 00:11:17.84\00:11:21.79 And in justification, the blood of Jesus is applied to 00:11:21.82\00:11:27.57 our records up there on the books of heaven 00:11:27.60\00:11:30.83 and the sins are blotted out. 00:11:30.86\00:11:33.38 Christ's character stands in place of our character. 00:11:33.41\00:11:38.15 Hallelujah. 00:11:38.18\00:11:39.15 Romans 8:33 says it this way. 00:11:39.16\00:11:41.91 "Who shall bring a charge against God's elect? 00:11:41.94\00:11:46.35 It is God who justifies. " 00:11:46.38\00:11:50.14 And what justification does for the repentant sinner 00:11:51.00\00:11:54.97 is that it frees us from the penalty of sin. 00:11:55.00\00:12:00.14 Now sanctification is something, it is a process 00:12:00.51\00:12:05.87 of character transformation. 00:12:05.90\00:12:08.31 It sets us free from the power of sin. 00:12:08.34\00:12:13.01 We are set apart from the profane, 00:12:13.21\00:12:17.39 we are consecrated for God's holy work, 00:12:17.42\00:12:22.00 and we are made holy. 00:12:22.03\00:12:24.63 Did you know that's God's will for your life? 00:12:24.66\00:12:26.80 You know, people are always saying, 00:12:27.27\00:12:28.31 "What's God's will for my life?" 00:12:28.34\00:12:29.65 1 Thessalonians 4:3 says, "This is the will of God for you, 00:12:29.68\00:12:34.92 your sanctification. " 00:12:34.95\00:12:37.62 Sanctification occurs through the imparted righteousness 00:12:38.25\00:12:43.66 of Jesus Christ. 00:12:43.69\00:12:44.72 This is the righteousness that is poured into our hearts 00:12:44.75\00:12:48.88 and our minds. 00:12:48.91\00:12:49.88 Sanctification is Christ in us. 00:12:49.89\00:12:53.51 Our only hope of glory. 00:12:53.54\00:12:55.62 When we are sanctified, we are made one with Christ Jesus. 00:12:56.36\00:13:01.03 And by sanctification, Christ is formed in us and our 00:13:01.06\00:13:06.36 natural lives are transformed into spiritual lives. 00:13:06.39\00:13:09.69 Can you imagine what it's like when we've finally reached that 00:13:10.17\00:13:14.72 point where His love, His holiness, His faith, His purity, 00:13:14.75\00:13:20.67 are really ours? 00:13:20.70\00:13:22.17 It's His goodness manifested in us and through us. 00:13:22.20\00:13:26.74 Sanctification is the natural progression of 00:13:27.25\00:13:30.32 the Christian life. 00:13:30.35\00:13:31.32 And justification just is the first step that give us... 00:13:31.34\00:13:37.35 We heard David Shin earlier talking, I told him I had to 00:13:37.38\00:13:40.78 take this out of my sermon. 00:13:40.81\00:13:42.88 The justification was in the outer court of the sanctuary 00:13:42.91\00:13:49.03 at the altar of burnt offering. 00:13:49.06\00:13:51.26 But sanctification is when you naturally go forward into 00:13:51.29\00:13:55.78 the holy place. 00:13:55.81\00:13:57.22 Now, glorification is also a process. 00:13:57.62\00:14:01.92 2 Corinthians 3:18 says that, "we all, with unveiled face, 00:14:02.59\00:14:07.60 beholding as in a mirror... " 00:14:07.63\00:14:10.29 This is the mirror. 00:14:10.32\00:14:11.80 "... the glory or image of God, are being transformed 00:14:11.83\00:14:16.34 from glory to glory, as by the Holy Spirit. " 00:14:16.37\00:14:21.69 Glory, what is God's glory? 00:14:21.72\00:14:23.96 His character. 00:14:24.77\00:14:26.16 So sanctification and glorification, in some parts, 00:14:26.19\00:14:30.87 are very similar because there's that character transformation 00:14:30.90\00:14:35.48 going on in the process of sanctification. 00:14:35.51\00:14:37.67 And as we are changed to be more like Jesus, 00:14:37.70\00:14:41.20 we are being glorified. 00:14:41.23\00:14:42.88 And we're going to look at that in just a moment. 00:14:42.91\00:14:44.50 But what I'd like you to do right now is turn to 00:14:44.53\00:14:47.19 Zechariah chapter 3. 00:14:47.22\00:14:51.54 And while you do that, something I left out was 00:14:51.94\00:14:54.70 glorification is ultimately consummated when this 00:14:54.73\00:15:00.48 mortality puts on immortality at the resurrection. 00:15:00.51\00:15:07.34 But Zechariah chapter 3. 00:15:07.38\00:15:09.66 Let me set this up for you. 00:15:09.69\00:15:11.52 Joshua was the first high priest after they 00:15:11.55\00:15:15.74 came out of captivity. 00:15:15.77\00:15:17.30 He is standing before the Lord, before the Angel of the Lord. 00:15:17.33\00:15:21.03 And who is the Angel of the Lord? 00:15:21.06\00:15:22.89 Jesus. 00:15:22.92\00:15:23.89 And all, you know, almost every Bible scholar 00:15:23.90\00:15:29.12 agrees that Jesus Christ is the Angel of the Lord. 00:15:29.15\00:15:33.83 But now I want you to take this testimony here, this story, 00:15:33.86\00:15:38.03 and make it personal. 00:15:38.06\00:15:39.55 Joshua is standing before the Angel of the Lord 00:15:39.58\00:15:42.51 It's you standing before the Angel of the Lord. 00:15:42.54\00:15:45.10 Think about that in your mind. 00:15:45.13\00:15:46.57 And the Bible says that he is clothed in filthy garments. 00:15:46.60\00:15:51.72 What do you mean the high priest is clothed in filthy garments? 00:15:51.75\00:15:56.29 What does Isaiah say in Isaiah 64 verse 4? 00:15:56.32\00:15:59.71 "All of our righteousness is as filthy rags before Him. " 00:15:59.74\00:16:05.45 The very best that Shelley Quinn can do is nothing. 00:16:05.48\00:16:10.52 It's just like filth before the Lord. 00:16:11.15\00:16:14.14 So without God, I can do nothing. 00:16:14.17\00:16:17.16 So here's Joshua standing before the High Priest. 00:16:17.19\00:16:21.29 Satan, the accuser of the brethren comes in 00:16:21.32\00:16:24.58 and he is standing there to oppose Joshua. 00:16:24.61\00:16:28.29 And he's pointing his little finger at him and saying, 00:16:28.32\00:16:32.11 "He has transgressed the law, he is not worthy to be saved, 00:16:32.97\00:16:36.98 nor are the people worthy to be saved. " 00:16:37.01\00:16:39.20 Now, he didn't think that Joshua should be restored 00:16:39.23\00:16:42.82 to divine favor. 00:16:42.85\00:16:44.06 Was he right? 00:16:44.09\00:16:45.67 You know, when you think about it, God does have a perfect 00:16:46.37\00:16:48.73 standard for living, doesn't He. 00:16:48.76\00:16:50.71 And that perfect standard of living is His divine law, 00:16:51.35\00:16:54.81 His law of love which is a reflection of His character. 00:16:54.84\00:17:00.66 And He does command created beings to conform to 00:17:00.96\00:17:05.60 that law, doesn't He. 00:17:05.63\00:17:06.93 But what do we do if we are standing before the 00:17:07.50\00:17:10.66 Angel of the Lord and here we are in these filthy garments 00:17:10.69\00:17:15.38 as Joshua was. 00:17:15.41\00:17:17.82 And Satan the accuser is pointing his finger and says, 00:17:17.85\00:17:22.21 "Shelley Quinn deserves to die. " 00:17:22.24\00:17:24.74 See, what Satan didn't take into account was God's 00:17:25.96\00:17:29.79 plan of salvation. 00:17:29.82\00:17:31.14 For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, 00:17:31.17\00:17:34.32 but the Lord speaks to Satan and He says, 00:17:34.35\00:17:38.05 "The Lord rebuke you, Satan. 00:17:38.08\00:17:41.17 Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?" 00:17:41.20\00:17:46.19 How many of you are brands plucked from the fire? 00:17:46.22\00:17:48.95 Amen. 00:17:49.05\00:17:50.02 Now let's look at what Zechariah 3 says 00:17:50.03\00:17:52.34 in verse 4, "Then He, Jesus, answered and spoke to those 00:17:53.12\00:17:58.83 who stood before Him saying, 'Take away the filthy 00:17:58.86\00:18:02.11 garments from him. '" 00:18:02.14\00:18:03.23 This is remission of sins. 00:18:03.26\00:18:05.38 "And He says to him," to Joshua, to Robert, 00:18:06.18\00:18:10.30 to Betty, to Linda, to Shelley, 00:18:10.33\00:18:12.95 "He says, 'See, I have removed your iniquity from you. '" 00:18:12.98\00:18:18.07 This is the perfect picture of justification. 00:18:18.10\00:18:22.00 "I will clothe you with rich robes. " 00:18:22.03\00:18:25.86 This imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ 00:18:25.89\00:18:30.24 that has been reckoned to our account. 00:18:30.27\00:18:33.30 And then He said, "Let them put a clean turban 00:18:33.80\00:18:37.13 on his head. " 00:18:37.16\00:18:38.21 The priest wore a turban and on their turban it said, 00:18:38.24\00:18:41.59 "Holiness to the Lord. " 00:18:41.62\00:18:43.31 This is, in my mind, as they put this, the scripture says, 00:18:43.34\00:18:48.15 "so they put a clean turban on his head. " 00:18:48.18\00:18:50.36 It's a picture of a sanctified mind. 00:18:50.39\00:18:52.82 "And they put the clothes on him and the Angel of 00:18:52.85\00:18:55.72 the Lord stood by approving. " 00:18:55.75\00:18:59.38 Doesn't that excite you to think if Joshua, the high priest, 00:18:59.41\00:19:02.97 who I imagine was a pretty righteous man, is what we would 00:19:03.00\00:19:07.05 take into account, if he can stand there in all of his best 00:19:07.08\00:19:13.22 and not be good enough but Jesus says, "Here, take those off. 00:19:13.72\00:19:17.64 Let Me put My robe of righteousness around you. 00:19:17.67\00:19:20.64 Here, let Me put My miter on you, 00:19:20.67\00:19:23.55 'Holiness to the Lord. '" 00:19:23.58\00:19:25.02 Now turn to Romans 3:23. 00:19:25.05\00:19:28.59 Romans 3:23. 00:19:28.62\00:19:30.44 There is no such thing as personal righteousness. 00:19:30.94\00:19:35.10 I am always amazed when someone comes to me and says, 00:19:35.13\00:19:37.92 "Do you believe in righteousness by faith?" 00:19:37.95\00:19:40.27 That's the only kind of righteousness that there is. 00:19:40.30\00:19:44.52 Because no created being measures up to the standard 00:19:44.55\00:19:49.44 that God holds out. 00:19:49.47\00:19:51.55 And you know what? 00:19:51.58\00:19:52.83 Satan is not omnipresent. 00:19:52.86\00:19:55.75 We're always saying, "You know, the devil made me do it. " 00:19:55.78\00:19:58.53 No, but one of his unholy alliance. 00:19:58.56\00:20:01.68 What he has is he's got all of these little unholy 00:20:01.71\00:20:05.19 angels out there. 00:20:05.22\00:20:06.38 And they're out there sent with assignments to trip us up. 00:20:06.41\00:20:09.78 But then they also act as those CSI agents to collect 00:20:09.81\00:20:14.44 the forensic evidence against us and to take it back to 00:20:14.48\00:20:19.07 Satan and say, "Ha ha, I caught Shelley Quinn. 00:20:19.11\00:20:21.37 She was gossiping. " 00:20:21.40\00:20:23.48 Uh-ho, now, so he can go to the Lord and say, 00:20:23.51\00:20:27.10 "She doesn't deserve Your divine favor. " 00:20:27.13\00:20:29.92 But what he's overlooking is God's plan of salvation. 00:20:29.95\00:20:35.88 Romans 3:23 00:20:35.91\00:20:37.69 Justification is an act of grace. 00:20:37.72\00:20:41.40 "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. " 00:20:41.43\00:20:45.68 In the Greek, this is a present active tense. 00:20:45.71\00:20:49.22 All have sinned and continue to fall short of the glory of God. 00:20:49.25\00:20:53.83 I don't know that there's, I can honestly tell you there's 00:20:54.55\00:20:58.04 never been one day that I have been able to attain 00:20:58.07\00:21:02.23 to God's perfect character. 00:21:02.26\00:21:04.28 How about you when you think about that? 00:21:04.31\00:21:07.27 But look at verse 24. 00:21:07.30\00:21:09.36 "Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption 00:21:09.39\00:21:17.00 that is in Christ Jesus. " 00:21:17.03\00:21:19.37 Isaiah 53 says in verse 11, he says, "By His knowledge 00:21:19.40\00:21:25.59 My righteous Servant shall justify many for He 00:21:25.62\00:21:31.44 shall bear their iniquities. " 00:21:31.47\00:21:34.45 We have One who has born our iniquities. 00:21:34.48\00:21:38.64 Now flip over to Romans 5. 00:21:38.67\00:21:40.74 Romans 5, actually Romans 5 and 7 are wonderful chapters 00:21:40.77\00:21:48.03 to understand justification. 00:21:48.06\00:21:50.68 Romans 5, "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that 00:21:50.71\00:21:57.25 while we were still... " what? 00:21:57.28\00:22:00.82 "... sinners, Christ died for us. 00:22:00.85\00:22:04.43 Much more then, having now been justified... " how? 00:22:04.46\00:22:11.35 "... by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. " 00:22:11.38\00:22:16.94 Justification happens when we repent and accept the 00:22:16.97\00:22:22.03 Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior, when we give our heart to Him. 00:22:22.06\00:22:27.09 And God credits to our account the atonement 00:22:27.15\00:22:31.99 provided by Jesus Christ. 00:22:32.02\00:22:33.67 We are justified through His atoning blood 00:22:33.70\00:22:36.53 and adopted as children of God. 00:22:36.56\00:22:38.52 But then when we repent, we also know that 00:22:38.55\00:22:42.71 He has, not only given us the divine mercy 00:22:42.74\00:22:47.64 by crediting Christ's righteousness, His perfect 00:22:47.67\00:22:50.89 conformity to the law, to our account, 00:22:50.92\00:22:53.21 but the sinner is also restored at that point before God. 00:22:53.24\00:22:59.02 Here we were like Habakkuk, as Habakkuk said, 00:22:59.05\00:23:02.93 we were bent over. 00:23:02.96\00:23:04.38 And the minute that we receive Christ or we repent of our sins, 00:23:04.41\00:23:08.80 we are in right standing with God. 00:23:08.83\00:23:11.45 Isn't that exciting to think that you can be in right 00:23:12.72\00:23:15.71 standing with the Holy God? 00:23:15.74\00:23:17.75 When you can say, "I am justified, it is just as if 00:23:18.57\00:23:24.27 I'd never sinned. " 00:23:24.30\00:23:26.25 Hallelujah. 00:23:26.28\00:23:27.25 Now continuing on in Romans 5, verse 16. 00:23:27.26\00:23:31.55 "For the judgment which came from one offense... " 00:23:31.58\00:23:34.91 That's Adam's offense and we know what that judgment was. 00:23:34.95\00:23:38.66 It's death. 00:23:38.69\00:23:39.72 "... resulted in condemnation," the spiritual death, 00:23:39.75\00:23:43.29 "... but the free gift," of salvation, 00:23:43.32\00:23:45.97 "which came from many offenses resulted in justification. " 00:23:46.00\00:23:51.07 Into that right standing with God. 00:23:51.10\00:23:54.10 That new spiritual life that we've been given. 00:23:54.13\00:23:56.59 "For if by the one man's offense," Adam's offense, 00:23:56.62\00:24:01.26 "death reigned through the one, much more those who receive 00:24:01.29\00:24:05.92 abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness 00:24:05.95\00:24:09.53 will reign in life through Christ Jesus. " 00:24:09.56\00:24:13.77 Isn't that exciting. 00:24:13.80\00:24:15.84 Think about that. 00:24:16.76\00:24:17.76 You have received an abundance of grace 00:24:18.16\00:24:21.89 and the gift of righteousness. 00:24:21.92\00:24:25.21 And he goes on in verse 18 to say, "Therefore, as through 00:24:25.24\00:24:29.16 one man's offense judgment came to all men resulting in 00:24:29.19\00:24:32.89 condemnation, even so through one Man's righteous act," 00:24:32.92\00:24:38.99 speaking of Jesus, "the free gift came to all men, 00:24:39.02\00:24:44.84 resulting in justification of life. 00:24:44.87\00:24:49.10 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, 00:24:49.13\00:24:54.52 so also by one Man's obedience many will be made righteous. " 00:24:54.55\00:25:00.22 You know, Isaiah said in Isaiah 61:10, 00:25:00.65\00:25:03.55 "I will greatly rejoice and take joy in the Lord 00:25:03.58\00:25:09.01 who has covered me, He has clothed me with the 00:25:09.04\00:25:12.48 garment of salvation and He has covered me with a 00:25:12.51\00:25:16.51 robe of righteousness. " 00:25:16.54\00:25:18.15 And justification results in peace; 00:25:18.71\00:25:22.87 peace of mind, peace with God. 00:25:22.90\00:25:25.51 No longer are we at odds with God, but now we have 00:25:25.54\00:25:29.56 true peace with God. 00:25:29.59\00:25:30.67 Look back in Romans 5 verse 1. 00:25:30.70\00:25:33.72 It says, "Therefore, having been justified by faith.. " 00:25:33.75\00:25:40.20 How are we justified? 00:25:40.23\00:25:41.52 By faith. Faith in what? 00:25:41.55\00:25:43.46 In Jesus and what He has accomplished for us. 00:25:43.49\00:25:47.25 "... we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 00:25:47.28\00:25:50.49 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace 00:25:50.52\00:25:55.98 in which we stand. " 00:25:56.01\00:25:58.35 Let me tell you something, grace is more than a gift of God. 00:25:58.38\00:26:01.86 Grace is a supernatural power, the divine 00:26:01.89\00:26:05.32 assistance for salvation. 00:26:05.35\00:26:07.52 And we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand. 00:26:08.18\00:26:13.08 "And we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. " 00:26:13.11\00:26:16.88 Hope there is eager expectation. 00:26:17.47\00:26:19.49 We rejoice in the eager expectation of receiving 00:26:19.52\00:26:22.89 the glory of God, the character of God. 00:26:22.92\00:26:25.86 By faith we accept that divine justice was met at the cross. 00:26:25.89\00:26:32.27 We are pronounced just by our Creator Judge. 00:26:32.30\00:26:37.87 God declares that the punishment, don't miss 00:26:37.90\00:26:42.00 this part because if you miss this part, you will not 00:26:42.03\00:26:44.65 understand justification. 00:26:44.68\00:26:47.21 When God looks at our record and we've received Christ 00:26:47.24\00:26:52.98 and all He sees is that blood stained smear of His 00:26:53.01\00:26:57.75 precious Son's blood on our record book, 00:26:57.78\00:27:01.67 what He says is, "There's no forensic evidence 00:27:01.70\00:27:04.77 against them. " 00:27:04.80\00:27:05.90 He's saying, He's declaring that punishment cannot be 00:27:06.94\00:27:11.49 justly inflicted because there is no forensic 00:27:11.52\00:27:15.43 evidence against us. 00:27:15.46\00:27:17.05 You know, Jesus tells a parable in Luke 18. 00:27:17.56\00:27:20.31 And He tells it saying, He begins it by saying, 00:27:20.83\00:27:23.98 this parable is for those who trusted in themselves 00:27:24.01\00:27:28.47 that they were righteous. 00:27:28.50\00:27:30.00 Hmm, hmm, hmm. 00:27:30.76\00:27:32.02 As C.A. would say, "Hmm, hmm, hmm. " 00:27:32.05\00:27:34.54 He's telling this about the Pharisee and the tax collector 00:27:35.28\00:27:40.16 who are in the temple and they're praying. 00:27:40.19\00:27:43.18 And the Pharisee is saying, "Oh Lord," in that voice, 00:27:43.21\00:27:46.97 "I thank You that I am not like other sinners; 00:27:47.00\00:27:50.87 extortioners, unjust, adulterers, 00:27:50.90\00:27:54.74 or even like this tax collector. 00:27:54.77\00:27:57.16 Oh Lord, I give a tithe every week. 00:27:57.19\00:28:02.01 Oh Lord, I fast twice a week. 00:28:02.04\00:28:05.25 Lord, I'm caffeine free. I'm a vegan. 00:28:05.28\00:28:08.44 I'm not like this other one. " 00:28:08.85\00:28:11.68 And then the tax collector, standing over, won't even 00:28:12.47\00:28:16.78 really approach, he's standing there and he's beating his chest 00:28:16.81\00:28:21.54 and he can't even look up to heaven. 00:28:21.57\00:28:23.92 His head is hung down in shame. 00:28:23.95\00:28:26.35 He recognizes his sin. 00:28:26.38\00:28:28.45 He recognizes there's nothing he can do to save himself. 00:28:28.48\00:28:31.50 And he says, "Oh Lord, be merciful to me, a sinner. " 00:28:31.53\00:28:36.77 And listen what Jesus says in Luke 18:14. 00:28:36.80\00:28:39.92 "I tell you, this man," the tax collector, "went down to his 00:28:39.95\00:28:44.71 house justified, he went down justified rather than the other. 00:28:44.74\00:28:50.35 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, 00:28:50.38\00:28:54.79 and he who humbles himself will be exalted. " 00:28:54.82\00:28:58.35 Now you should still be in Romans, flip back to 00:28:58.78\00:29:01.17 Romans chapter 3. 00:29:01.20\00:29:02.68 If tithing, fasting twice a week, keeping the law, 00:29:04.09\00:29:09.43 if this won't justify us, let's look at what Paul says 00:29:10.74\00:29:14.39 in Romans 3:27. 00:29:14.42\00:29:16.09 He says, "Where is boasting then? 00:29:16.12\00:29:20.02 It is excluded. 00:29:20.05\00:29:21.51 By what Law? Of works? 00:29:22.25\00:29:24.02 No, but by the law of faith. 00:29:24.05\00:29:26.41 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified... " 00:29:26.44\00:29:32.09 How? 00:29:32.12\00:29:33.09 ..."by faith apart from," what? 00:29:33.10\00:29:35.27 "... the deeds of the law. " 00:29:35.30\00:29:37.19 It's not law keeping that's going to make you justified. 00:29:37.22\00:29:40.47 That Pharisee was a law keeper. 00:29:40.50\00:29:42.34 But look what Paul says in verse 31 because that 00:29:42.37\00:29:44.99 is really important. 00:29:45.02\00:29:46.62 He says, "Do we then make void the law through faith? 00:29:46.65\00:29:50.85 Certainly not. 00:29:50.88\00:29:52.19 On the contrary, we establish the law. " 00:29:52.22\00:29:57.57 Justification is a gift declaring that Christ's 00:29:58.57\00:30:02.46 righteousness has been given to us. 00:30:02.49\00:30:04.43 Christ, who perfectly satisfied the law of God. 00:30:04.46\00:30:10.01 The law of God is not relaxed. 00:30:10.04\00:30:12.61 It is not set aside. 00:30:12.64\00:30:14.45 But it is declared to be fulfilled 00:30:14.96\00:30:18.34 in Christ's righteousness and then credited to our account. 00:30:18.37\00:30:22.45 So when God declares us justified, guess what? 00:30:22.48\00:30:27.60 That entitles us to all the privileges, all the rewards 00:30:27.63\00:30:32.51 that perfect obedience to the law entitles us. 00:30:32.54\00:30:37.43 And faith is the only instrument by which we can seize hold 00:30:37.46\00:30:42.77 of Jesus Christ, seize hold of justification. 00:30:42.80\00:30:46.93 You know, in the Bible Paul persuasively argues 00:30:46.96\00:30:50.56 one aspect of justification. 00:30:50.59\00:30:53.65 And he does it from the stand point of before 00:30:53.68\00:30:58.89 the act of being justified. 00:30:58.92\00:31:00.91 He says good works are not the ground for justification. 00:31:00.94\00:31:05.12 Man is not justified by conformity to the law 00:31:05.15\00:31:09.41 or dependant on rights or ceremonies. 00:31:09.88\00:31:13.09 But we are only justified by the work of God. 00:31:13.12\00:31:15.78 Yet Paul says, good works, as we just saw while in verse 31, 00:31:15.81\00:31:22.11 are not the ground, but they are the consequence 00:31:22.14\00:31:26.16 of justification. 00:31:26.19\00:31:27.76 When we are justified, we will establish the law. 00:31:27.79\00:31:32.73 Now turn to James chapter 2. 00:31:32.76\00:31:35.32 Because sometimes people will say, "Well, Paul says this 00:31:35.73\00:31:40.03 but James says that. " 00:31:40.06\00:31:41.67 Paul was arguing the aspect of the doctrine of justification 00:31:41.70\00:31:48.31 before you're justified, and what James is doing 00:31:48.34\00:31:52.42 is persuasively arguing a different aspect of the 00:31:52.45\00:31:56.30 doctrine of justification from the standpoint 00:31:56.33\00:31:59.48 after you're justified. 00:31:59.51\00:32:01.29 James says in James 2:20, we'll begin, "But do you want to know, 00:32:01.32\00:32:06.88 O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? 00:32:06.91\00:32:11.25 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he 00:32:11.28\00:32:13.99 offered Isaac his son on the alter? 00:32:14.02\00:32:15.65 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, 00:32:15.68\00:32:20.64 and by works faith was made perfect. 00:32:20.67\00:32:25.38 And the scripture was fulfilled which said, 00:32:25.41\00:32:28.59 'Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him 00:32:28.62\00:32:31.28 for righteousness. ' 00:32:31.31\00:32:32.50 And he was called the friend of God. " 00:32:32.53\00:32:36.81 Can we be a friend of God if we have not given Him our heart 00:32:37.32\00:32:43.57 and walking in obedience to Him? 00:32:43.60\00:32:46.04 But he goes on in verse 24, he says, "You see then 00:32:46.07\00:32:49.12 that a man is justified by works and not by faith only. " 00:32:49.15\00:32:53.56 So what James is doing here is arguing that after we have been 00:32:53.59\00:32:58.37 justified, we will conform to God's law as evidence of 00:32:58.40\00:33:04.36 our genuine faith, as evidence that we have been justified. 00:33:04.39\00:33:11.26 Genuine faith seeks to obey the divine will of God. 00:33:11.73\00:33:17.39 And I'll tell you what, if we're not obeying God's divine will, 00:33:17.42\00:33:22.78 I mean, that's indispensable to true religion, is it not? 00:33:23.79\00:33:27.04 So true justification then leads to sanctification. 00:33:27.07\00:33:33.42 Let me give you Matthew 6:12, we don't have time to turn there. 00:33:34.31\00:33:39.55 Listen to this and listen for which part is justification 00:33:39.58\00:33:42.76 and sanctification. 00:33:42.79\00:33:43.76 This is the Lord's prayer. 00:33:43.77\00:33:45.02 Jesus said, "Forgive us our debts. " 00:33:45.05\00:33:48.74 What is that? 00:33:48.77\00:33:49.74 Justification or sanctification? 00:33:50.01\00:33:51.84 Justification. 00:33:51.87\00:33:53.72 "Forgive us our debts. " 00:33:53.75\00:33:54.81 We don't have the ability to repay this debt. 00:33:54.84\00:33:57.49 "Forgive us this debt. " 00:33:57.52\00:33:59.20 But then He goes on and says, "Do not lead us into temptation, 00:33:59.23\00:34:04.16 but deliver us from evil. " 00:34:04.19\00:34:06.88 What's that? 00:34:06.91\00:34:07.88 Sanctification. 00:34:07.97\00:34:09.66 When our sin debt is forgiven, we're anxious not to offend God. 00:34:09.69\00:34:13.99 We desire sanctification. 00:34:14.02\00:34:16.40 Personal holiness is not the cause of our justification, 00:34:16.43\00:34:22.57 but it is the consequence of our justification. 00:34:22.60\00:34:25.44 So justification takes just a moment. 00:34:26.11\00:34:30.97 When we repent, when you have repented of your sin, 00:34:31.00\00:34:34.85 don't beat yourself up. 00:34:34.88\00:34:36.31 Don't keep confessing it over and over, and being under 00:34:36.34\00:34:41.10 that condemnation. 00:34:41.13\00:34:42.75 But now sanctification, learning to walk 00:34:42.78\00:34:46.69 in the harmony of His will, is the work of a lifetime. 00:34:46.72\00:34:51.25 Turn to Hebrews chapter 12. 00:34:51.28\00:34:54.19 Hebrews chapter 12. 00:34:54.22\00:34:56.16 You know, I use to read where the Lord said, 00:34:57.71\00:35:01.54 "Be holy for I am holy. " 00:35:01.57\00:35:05.58 Does that sound like a suggestion? 00:35:05.61\00:35:07.60 No it doesn't, does it. 00:35:09.32\00:35:10.79 It sounds like God's commanding us. 00:35:10.82\00:35:12.81 And let me tell you a secret. 00:35:13.61\00:35:16.05 Any time God commands us to do anything, 00:35:16.55\00:35:19.44 He will give us the power to accomplish it. 00:35:19.47\00:35:23.17 His commands are His promise. 00:35:23.89\00:35:27.08 So if God requires us to be holy, He's saying, 00:35:27.11\00:35:30.80 "I promise you, I will make you holy. " 00:35:30.83\00:35:33.38 Hebrews 12 verse 14. 00:35:33.41\00:35:35.77 Hebrews 12 verse 14, the Bible says, 00:35:37.04\00:35:40.11 "Pursue holiness, without which no one will see the Lord. " 00:35:40.14\00:35:47.56 Let me ask you. 00:35:48.46\00:35:49.79 Does that make you feel a little bit afraid to know that 00:35:49.82\00:35:53.06 you're suppose to be pursuing holiness? 00:35:53.09\00:35:55.15 Yeah. 00:35:55.84\00:35:57.01 It's like, "Oh Lord, what do I do to pursue holiness?" 00:35:57.51\00:36:01.38 And some of us have this kind of a convoluted idea 00:36:01.41\00:36:06.60 of what holiness is. 00:36:06.63\00:36:08.31 We've seen these holiness movements and this is where 00:36:08.34\00:36:11.85 the women have got their hair... 00:36:11.88\00:36:13.40 If anyone's dressed like this, I haven't seen you and I'm not 00:36:13.70\00:36:16.67 condemning this, but I'm saying, you know the women 00:36:16.70\00:36:19.46 have got their hair turned back into that tight little bun 00:36:19.49\00:36:22.52 and their faces are scrubbed and they've got on these long skirts 00:36:22.55\00:36:27.16 and they walk two feet behind their husbands 00:36:27.19\00:36:29.29 to show submission. 00:36:29.32\00:36:30.50 And the men are walking around like this. 00:36:30.53\00:36:33.48 And they're nothing more than white washed tombs 00:36:34.59\00:36:38.63 with dead bones on the inside because they've got the idea 00:36:39.52\00:36:45.00 that they can make themselves holy. 00:36:45.03\00:36:47.51 We cannot make ourselves holy. 00:36:47.54\00:36:50.26 But to pursue means to seek. 00:36:50.29\00:36:53.57 Seek. 00:36:54.21\00:36:55.48 Holiness is sanctification. 00:36:55.51\00:36:57.19 Seek sanctification. 00:36:57.22\00:36:59.34 Now that's not nearly as scary, is it? 00:36:59.37\00:37:01.51 Seek sanctification, without which no one will see the Lord. 00:37:01.54\00:37:05.58 See, sanctification stresses a personal level, 00:37:05.61\00:37:08.84 a personal dimension of holiness. 00:37:08.87\00:37:11.18 And that is, as we've already said, God's will for your life. 00:37:11.21\00:37:16.11 There are six ways that I have found, and I want to deliver 00:37:16.90\00:37:21.59 to you today, that we are sanctified. 00:37:21.62\00:37:24.29 Usually we think of this as just the work of the Holy Spirit. 00:37:24.95\00:37:27.97 But there are 6 ways the Bibles tells us that we are sanctified. 00:37:28.00\00:37:31.63 We are sanctified through God the Father, 00:37:31.66\00:37:34.19 Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the word of God, 00:37:34.22\00:37:38.18 by faith, through obedience. 00:37:38.21\00:37:41.06 Six different ways. 00:37:41.09\00:37:43.32 So if we are to pursue holiness, we are to seek sanctification 00:37:43.35\00:37:49.76 in these six ways. 00:37:49.79\00:37:51.65 Now one thing I want you to notice, there is no 00:37:51.68\00:37:54.63 number seven on this list. 00:37:54.66\00:37:56.78 We, some of us try, we know 7 is the number of perfection 00:37:56.81\00:38:00.59 or completeness, and some of us think, "Well, we ought to 00:38:00.62\00:38:03.34 add one more and that is that we will sanctify by the Pharisee. " 00:38:03.37\00:38:07.12 Do you know what I mean? 00:38:08.09\00:38:09.44 Oh please, please. 00:38:09.47\00:38:13.08 God tells us to be fishers of men. 00:38:13.11\00:38:17.06 We're to put that beautiful bait, the wonderful gospel, 00:38:17.09\00:38:23.76 we're to cast out the word of the gospel. 00:38:23.79\00:38:27.16 But nowhere does He tell us to be cleaners of those fish. 00:38:27.19\00:38:32.63 We are, yes, to teach what His word says, 00:38:32.66\00:38:36.21 to be gentle in heart, teaching in a loving way. 00:38:36.24\00:38:39.74 But, you know, it amazes me how often I have had 00:38:39.77\00:38:43.62 someone come to me when I'm out speaking and say, 00:38:43.65\00:38:47.25 "I almost didn't join the church. " 00:38:47.28\00:38:49.68 Or, "I left the church for a long time. 00:38:49.71\00:38:52.07 I'm just now come back because when I first joined, 00:38:52.11\00:38:55.18 sister Jones just chewed me up one end and down the other 00:38:55.21\00:39:00.00 every Sabbath for something that I was doing. " 00:39:00.03\00:39:03.30 Because sister Jones took it upon her to think that she was 00:39:03.33\00:39:07.22 the one to do the sanctification. 00:39:07.25\00:39:08.90 Do you all know what I'm saying? 00:39:08.93\00:39:10.62 You're being quiet. 00:39:10.65\00:39:12.49 We've got to be careful. 00:39:12.97\00:39:14.41 We are sanctified by God the Father. 00:39:14.44\00:39:17.28 So we should seek, if we're going to pursue holiness, 00:39:17.31\00:39:20.22 seek sanctification through a relationship 00:39:20.25\00:39:23.67 with God the Father. 00:39:23.70\00:39:24.76 We won't have time to look these up, so just if you're a 00:39:24.79\00:39:27.64 note take, jot down the scriptures. 00:39:27.67\00:39:30.13 1 Thessalonians 5:23 says, "Now may the God of peace 00:39:30.33\00:39:35.16 Himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit, 00:39:35.19\00:39:40.11 soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming 00:39:40.14\00:39:44.42 of our Lord Jesus Christ. " 00:39:44.45\00:39:46.44 Who's doing the sanctification? 00:39:46.47\00:39:48.45 The God of peace. 00:39:48.48\00:39:50.44 And Jude 1 tells us it is God the Father. 00:39:50.47\00:39:53.41 Jude says, "To those who are sanctified, called 00:39:53.44\00:39:57.39 by God the Father and preserved in Jesus Christ. " 00:39:57.42\00:40:02.14 Hallelujah. 00:40:02.17\00:40:03.21 See, God sanctifies us. 00:40:03.61\00:40:05.49 Paul wrote to the Philippians, "It is God who works in you 00:40:06.81\00:40:11.81 to will and to do according to His good purposes. " 00:40:11.84\00:40:18.04 This is God's job. 00:40:18.07\00:40:20.31 He has predestined you to be conformed to the 00:40:20.34\00:40:24.63 image of His Son. 00:40:24.66\00:40:25.63 That's what Romans 8:29 says. 00:40:25.64\00:40:27.72 And you know what? 00:40:27.75\00:40:28.72 He works all things in conformity to His will. 00:40:28.74\00:40:32.03 That's what Ephesians 1:11 says. 00:40:32.06\00:40:34.21 So if He's predestined this, He's going to do a good 00:40:34.24\00:40:37.26 job of doing it. 00:40:37.29\00:40:38.42 So what's our part? 00:40:38.45\00:40:40.11 Our part is to seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, 00:40:40.14\00:40:45.87 to seek a relationship with the Lord. 00:40:45.90\00:40:48.65 He's got a plan for our life. 00:40:48.68\00:40:50.93 And He tells us in Jeremiah 29 that when we recognize this, 00:40:50.96\00:40:54.52 we will seek Him with all of our heart and we will find Him. 00:40:54.55\00:40:58.45 And Hebrews 11:6 tells us that He rewards those 00:40:58.48\00:41:02.68 who diligently, earnestly seek Him. 00:41:02.71\00:41:06.33 Now number 2, Christ is our sanctification. 00:41:07.13\00:41:12.20 Hallelujah. 00:41:12.60\00:41:14.36 You all ought to be getting excited when you 00:41:14.91\00:41:16.99 think about this. 00:41:17.02\00:41:18.12 So if we're going to pursue holiness, seek sanctification, 00:41:18.15\00:41:21.91 we should be seeking a relationship with Christ. 00:41:21.94\00:41:24.73 We should be seeking to be in Christ Jesus. 00:41:24.76\00:41:28.78 1 Corinthians 1:30 says that because of Him, because of God, 00:41:28.81\00:41:34.91 we are in Christ. 00:41:34.94\00:41:36.60 Here's Christ, the head of the church. 00:41:36.63\00:41:38.54 Shelley was over here before I accepted Him. 00:41:38.57\00:41:41.86 But once I accepted Jesus Christ, He lined me up. 00:41:41.89\00:41:46.11 I'm in Christ. 00:41:46.14\00:41:47.23 He's now the head and I am part of His body. 00:41:47.26\00:41:51.31 And He says that He is, He became for us wisdom from God, 00:41:51.34\00:41:56.44 our righteousness, our sanctification. 00:41:56.47\00:42:01.99 Jesus is our sanctification and redemption. 00:42:02.02\00:42:06.35 That's why Paul can say in 2 Corinthians 5:21, 00:42:07.03\00:42:10.39 "He, God, made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us 00:42:10.42\00:42:15.02 that we might become the righteousness of God 00:42:15.05\00:42:19.90 in Christ Jesus. " 00:42:19.93\00:42:22.19 Amen. 00:42:22.22\00:42:23.19 Hebrews 10:10 says, "We are sanctified through the offering 00:42:24.08\00:42:28.35 of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. " 00:42:28.38\00:42:32.62 Hebrews 13:12 says we are sanctified by His blood. 00:42:34.08\00:42:39.19 Listen, "Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people 00:42:39.22\00:42:44.66 with His own blood, suffered outside the gate. " 00:42:44.69\00:42:47.82 So, what are we to do? 00:42:48.12\00:42:49.65 We're to put on Christ Jesus. 00:42:49.68\00:42:52.63 We're to put off the old and put on Jesus Christ. 00:42:52.66\00:42:56.84 And in John 15:5, what Jesus said is, "Abide in Me. 00:42:56.87\00:43:03.33 I'm the vine, you're the branch. 00:43:03.36\00:43:06.45 Apart from Me, you can do... " what? 00:43:06.48\00:43:09.05 "... nothing. " 00:43:09.08\00:43:10.53 Now number 3, we are sanctified by the Holy Spirit. 00:43:10.56\00:43:16.51 So we should pursue holiness, seek sanctification, 00:43:16.54\00:43:22.04 by seeking to be filled day by day with His Holy Spirit. 00:43:22.07\00:43:27.09 Through the Spirit we're born again, we're sanctified, 00:43:27.12\00:43:31.42 He renews our mind, He writes God's law of love on our hearts, 00:43:31.45\00:43:36.37 and He gives us the power to live a holy life. 00:43:36.40\00:43:39.74 Listen to this, 2 Thessalonians 2:13. 00:43:39.77\00:43:44.18 "We are bound to give thanks to God always for you, 00:43:44.21\00:43:47.54 brethren beloved by the Lord, because God has from the 00:43:47.57\00:43:51.46 beginning chosen you for salvation through sanctification 00:43:51.49\00:43:56.84 by the Spirit and belief in the truth. " 00:43:56.87\00:44:01.08 And it is something that God puts; a new heart. 00:44:01.96\00:44:06.90 He promised from the Old Testament, "I'll give you a 00:44:06.93\00:44:08.99 new heart and a new spirit. " 00:44:09.02\00:44:10.98 So now turn to Ephesians 3 verse 16. 00:44:11.01\00:44:15.18 I want to show you something. 00:44:15.21\00:44:16.51 Ephesians 3 and verse 16. 00:44:17.45\00:44:20.81 I was so relieved when I learned, I don't know, 00:44:23.51\00:44:27.14 is there anyone in here who suffered from what I suffered? 00:44:27.17\00:44:30.79 I tried so hard to be holy. 00:44:30.82\00:44:34.52 I tried my best and I never felt I could do enough for the Lord. 00:44:35.79\00:44:41.56 Oh Lord, if only I'd read my Bible a little bit longer. 00:44:41.66\00:44:44.15 If only I'd pray a little bit longer. 00:44:44.18\00:44:45.53 If I'd only do more mission work. 00:44:45.56\00:44:46.82 If I'd only do this, if I'd only do that. 00:44:46.85\00:44:48.53 Oh Lord, if I could only... 00:44:48.56\00:44:50.37 And you just get exhausted. 00:44:50.40\00:44:52.56 I mean, I just couldn't be holy enough. 00:44:53.39\00:44:55.49 And then you know what happens when you get exhausted? 00:44:56.20\00:44:58.90 You start feeling condemned and you start turning your back 00:44:58.93\00:45:01.97 on the Lord because it's just like, "I give up. " 00:45:02.00\00:45:04.30 I wonder how many people come to church Sabbath after Sabbath 00:45:05.10\00:45:09.16 and they're coming because it is the culturally correct thing 00:45:09.19\00:45:13.40 to do, but in their hearts they're just numb because 00:45:13.43\00:45:17.02 they think, "I'll never have salvation. " 00:45:17.05\00:45:19.35 See, if we recognize that it's God, it's Jesus Christ, 00:45:19.38\00:45:23.46 it's His Spirit sanctifying us. 00:45:23.49\00:45:25.61 Let's look at this Ephesians 3:16. 00:45:25.64\00:45:28.17 He says, "That He would grant you," he's praying, 00:45:28.96\00:45:33.12 "that He would grant you, according to the riches 00:45:33.15\00:45:35.75 of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His 00:45:35.78\00:45:41.85 Spirit in the inner man. " 00:45:41.88\00:45:43.79 Now skip down to verse 20. 00:45:43.82\00:45:46.40 "Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly 00:45:47.00\00:45:51.40 above all that we ask or think, according to the power 00:45:51.43\00:45:54.09 that works within us. " 00:45:54.12\00:45:55.48 What is that power that works within us? 00:45:55.51\00:45:58.27 We just looked at it. 00:45:58.30\00:45:59.44 We're strengthened with might through His Holy Spirit. 00:45:59.47\00:46:03.88 To Him be the glory. 00:46:03.91\00:46:05.83 It's God doing this work in you. 00:46:05.86\00:46:09.23 We are to walk by the Spirit. 00:46:09.26\00:46:13.00 We live in the Spirit, let us walk in the Spirit. 00:46:13.03\00:46:16.11 And if we do, Paul told the Galatians, "we will not fulfill 00:46:16.14\00:46:19.57 the lust of the flesh. " 00:46:19.60\00:46:21.14 Romans 8:13 and 14 says this. 00:46:21.17\00:46:26.55 "If you live according to the flesh you will die. 00:46:27.34\00:46:31.48 But if you, by the power of the Holy Spirit... " 00:46:32.94\00:46:38.29 Notice there's two agents here. 00:46:38.32\00:46:39.85 "... you, by the power of the Holy Spirit," you co-operating 00:46:39.88\00:46:45.09 with the Holy Spirit, "put to death the misdeeds of 00:46:45.12\00:46:49.14 your flesh, you will live. " 00:46:49.18\00:46:51.87 You'll have eternal life. 00:46:51.90\00:46:53.26 You can't do it on your own. 00:46:53.29\00:46:55.58 You can't do it without the Holy Spirit. 00:46:56.43\00:46:58.64 Guess what, the Holy Spirit can't do it without you. 00:46:58.67\00:47:00.87 The struggle of sanctification is surrender. 00:47:00.90\00:47:05.77 I mean, we want to drive our own bus. 00:47:08.01\00:47:10.85 The struggle of sanctification is saying, "Ok, I'll let You 00:47:10.88\00:47:14.64 drive and I'll sit over here in this second seat. " 00:47:14.67\00:47:18.98 But God wants us to know that the Holy Spirit is the One 00:47:20.97\00:47:25.99 who will teach us, who will guide us into all truth. 00:47:26.02\00:47:29.29 And how do we receive the Holy Spirit? 00:47:29.32\00:47:32.40 Luke 11 verse 9, these are Jesus' words. 00:47:33.10\00:47:36.79 He says, "Ask and it will be given to you; 00:47:36.82\00:47:40.34 seek and you will find; knock and the door will be 00:47:40.37\00:47:44.17 opened unto you. " 00:47:44.20\00:47:46.07 And you know, again, these are present active conditions. 00:47:46.10\00:47:50.22 These are linear verbs. 00:47:50.25\00:47:51.72 Jesus is saying, if you wanted to make a perfect translation 00:47:51.75\00:47:55.30 into English, it should read this way. 00:47:55.33\00:47:57.52 "Ask and keep on asking, seek and keep on seeking, 00:47:57.55\00:48:02.27 knock and keep on knocking, and it will be given to you. " 00:48:02.30\00:48:06.26 And He tell us in verse 13 what He is instructing us to ask for. 00:48:06.29\00:48:12.04 He says, "If you, being evil, know how to give good gifts 00:48:12.07\00:48:15.50 to your children, how much more, how much more will your 00:48:15.53\00:48:19.86 heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask 00:48:19.89\00:48:23.49 and keep on asking. " 00:48:23.52\00:48:24.79 And the reason we have to keep on asking is not because 00:48:25.44\00:48:28.35 we're begging, it's not because He's not going to 00:48:28.38\00:48:31.54 give Him to us. 00:48:31.57\00:48:32.54 He is eager to give the Holy Spirit to us. 00:48:32.55\00:48:35.11 The reason we keep on asking is because we quench the Spirit. 00:48:35.14\00:48:38.18 I mean, day by day we should get up and not even leave the house 00:48:39.82\00:48:43.02 until we say, "Lord, fill me with Your Holy Spirit. " 00:48:43.05\00:48:46.28 We are sanctified by God's truth, the holy Bible. 00:48:46.31\00:48:52.54 So, if we are going to pursue holiness, seek sanctification, 00:48:52.57\00:48:58.03 we should seek a relationship with this word. 00:48:58.06\00:49:01.99 If you want an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ, 00:49:02.02\00:49:06.24 there's only one way. 00:49:06.27\00:49:08.33 Have an intimate relationship with His word. 00:49:08.36\00:49:11.39 Jesus prayed in the garden. 00:49:11.42\00:49:13.60 In John 17:17, it records this beautiful prayer. 00:49:13.63\00:49:16.92 And He says, "Oh Lord, sanctify them by Your truth. 00:49:16.95\00:49:20.81 Your word is truth. " 00:49:20.84\00:49:23.03 I try to remember to pray that every time I pick up this Bible. 00:49:23.06\00:49:26.43 "Lord, don't let me just be studying this to answer the 00:49:26.46\00:49:29.63 Sabbath school, the quarterly questions. 00:49:29.66\00:49:31.96 But Father God, sanctify me. 00:49:31.99\00:49:34.50 Do a work in me. 00:49:35.00\00:49:36.14 Your word has transforming power. " 00:49:36.17\00:49:39.11 James says when it's implanted in the soul, 00:49:39.14\00:49:41.42 it has got the power to save your soul. 00:49:41.45\00:49:43.69 Plant it in the heart. 00:49:43.72\00:49:44.95 This is a word that is alive and active. 00:49:45.69\00:49:48.81 This is a word that will divide and do this little 00:49:48.84\00:49:53.38 surgery on your heart. 00:49:53.41\00:49:55.22 "Jesus," Paul says to the Ephesians in Ephesians 5 00:49:56.80\00:50:01.16 verse 25-27, "Christ loved the church and gave Himself 00:50:01.19\00:50:05.89 for her that He might sanctify her and cleanse her 00:50:05.92\00:50:12.12 by the washing of the water of the word, 00:50:12.15\00:50:15.94 the He might make her a glorious bride without spot or wrinkle. " 00:50:15.97\00:50:19.99 As we come to the word, it washes away the attitudes 00:50:20.49\00:50:26.53 that we have picked up in the world. 00:50:26.56\00:50:29.61 It renews our mind. 00:50:29.64\00:50:32.71 It is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. 00:50:32.74\00:50:36.27 So what should we do? 00:50:36.30\00:50:38.12 Seek to abide in the word. 00:50:38.15\00:50:40.80 What did Jesus say in John 8:31? 00:50:40.83\00:50:43.52 "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples. 00:50:43.55\00:50:47.89 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will 00:50:47.92\00:50:52.20 set you free. " 00:50:52.23\00:50:53.28 You can know the truth and the truth won't set you free 00:50:53.31\00:50:56.87 if you're not abiding in the word. 00:50:58.18\00:51:00.14 See, knowing the truth is up here. 00:51:01.87\00:51:05.34 Knowing the truth is intellectual, 00:51:05.98\00:51:09.06 or it can be intellectual, but abiding in the truth 00:51:09.09\00:51:12.98 gets it here. 00:51:13.01\00:51:14.43 This is where you're living in the word of God. 00:51:14.46\00:51:17.31 That's when you're set free. 00:51:17.34\00:51:19.45 Now Romans 10:17 says, "Faith comes by hearing, 00:51:20.21\00:51:25.35 and hearing by the word of God. " 00:51:25.38\00:51:26.56 We are sanctified by faith. 00:51:26.59\00:51:28.65 So what we should do is seek to develop more faith. 00:51:30.06\00:51:35.15 And you know faith is a gift, isn't it. 00:51:36.35\00:51:38.83 The Bible says that every one of us have been given a 00:51:38.86\00:51:41.66 measure of faith. 00:51:41.69\00:51:42.70 So how do we create more faith? 00:51:42.73\00:51:45.64 Faith comes by hearing; hearing by the word of God. 00:51:45.67\00:51:50.84 So the word of God. 00:51:50.87\00:51:52.78 Little word, little faith. 00:51:52.81\00:51:55.35 The more word that is in your heart, 00:51:56.06\00:51:58.89 the greater your faith will be. 00:51:58.92\00:52:02.32 And so faith is critical for this. 00:52:03.25\00:52:07.39 We live by faith in Christ. 00:52:09.11\00:52:11.14 We're kept by the power of God through faith. 00:52:11.17\00:52:14.12 This is the race of faith. 00:52:15.04\00:52:16.15 Now, we are sanctified for the purpose of obedience. 00:52:16.18\00:52:20.05 I don't know what everybody's problem is with obedience. 00:52:21.15\00:52:24.23 It is by grace, it is by the power of God working in us 00:52:24.53\00:52:28.46 to will and to act according to His good purpose. 00:52:28.49\00:52:30.94 So we should, if we were going to pursue holiness, 00:52:30.97\00:52:33.68 we should seek sanctification by seeking to obey. 00:52:33.71\00:52:37.89 1 Peter 1:2, Peter's writing and he says, "To the elect 00:52:37.92\00:52:42.35 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, 00:52:42.38\00:52:44.63 in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience. " 00:52:44.66\00:52:50.70 Here's how it says it in the amplified. 00:52:51.49\00:52:53.34 "You who are chosen and foreknown by God the Father, 00:52:53.37\00:52:56.60 consecrated, sanctified, made holy by the Spirit, 00:52:56.63\00:53:01.84 to be obedient to Jesus Christ, the Messiah. " 00:53:01.87\00:53:06.29 Did you know the Bible says obedience leads 00:53:09.36\00:53:11.68 to righteousness? 00:53:11.71\00:53:12.88 Romans 6:16, "Do you not know that to whom your present 00:53:13.18\00:53:17.14 yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one's slaves whom 00:53:17.17\00:53:21.11 you obey, whether of sin leading to death or of obedience 00:53:21.14\00:53:25.78 leading to righteousness. " 00:53:25.81\00:53:28.38 Don't think for one minute that obedience is legalistic. 00:53:28.41\00:53:35.89 We don't obey to be saved, we obey because we are saved. 00:53:36.65\00:53:42.64 Jesus didn't obey to become the Son of God. 00:53:42.67\00:53:46.76 He obeyed because He was the Son of God. 00:53:46.79\00:53:51.37 And John tells us in 1 John 2:28-29, 00:53:52.67\00:53:56.74 "Little children, abide in Him that when He appears 00:53:56.77\00:54:01.20 we may have confidence and not be ashamed 00:54:01.23\00:54:04.24 before Him at His coming. 00:54:04.27\00:54:06.45 If you know that He is righteous, you know that 00:54:06.48\00:54:11.53 everyone who practices righteousness... " 00:54:11.56\00:54:16.07 What is righteousness? 00:54:17.33\00:54:18.67 It's God's right way of doing things. 00:54:18.70\00:54:21.81 "... everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him. " 00:54:21.84\00:54:26.83 That's why he says, "Be doers of the word and not hearers only. " 00:54:26.86\00:54:32.07 Glorification. 00:54:36.25\00:54:37.87 I just have a few minutes left. 00:54:37.90\00:54:39.75 Romans 8:30 00:54:41.30\00:54:42.82 Justification leads to sanctification. 00:54:44.63\00:54:50.84 Sanctification leads to glorification. 00:54:50.87\00:54:53.93 Romans 8:30 says this. 00:54:54.78\00:54:58.00 "Moreover whom He predestined, those He also called. " 00:54:58.03\00:55:04.71 By the way, predestiny is not, 00:55:04.74\00:55:08.08 you've got the whole front row lined up and Him going, 00:55:09.05\00:55:12.42 "One, two, three, four, five. Ok, Rose, you're in. 00:55:12.45\00:55:15.49 One, two, three, four, five. Oh, you're in. 00:55:15.52\00:55:17.91 One, two, three, four, five. Ah ha, you're in. " 00:55:17.94\00:55:20.90 That's not predestination. 00:55:21.49\00:55:24.01 Predestination is God's Calvary plan, 00:55:24.04\00:55:28.57 that from the beginning He determined that whoever would 00:55:28.60\00:55:32.41 accept His Son, Jesus Christ, by faith and what He accomplished 00:55:32.44\00:55:36.89 for him, He predestined that they would be conformed 00:55:36.92\00:55:40.62 to the image of His Son. 00:55:40.65\00:55:42.75 "So those He predestined, He also called; 00:55:42.78\00:55:45.88 whom He called, those He justified; 00:55:45.91\00:55:48.18 whom He justified, these He also glorified. " 00:55:48.21\00:55:54.43 Isn't that interesting. 00:55:54.46\00:55:55.76 That's in the past tense. 00:55:55.79\00:55:57.57 You are glorified. 00:55:57.60\00:55:59.43 God knows the end from the beginning. 00:55:59.46\00:56:01.80 He calls things that are not as though they already were. 00:56:01.83\00:56:04.98 We've already looked at this whole process. 00:56:05.47\00:56:08.59 2 Corinthians 3:18 talks about how the Holy Spirit is 00:56:08.62\00:56:12.40 leading us from one level of God's glory to the next. 00:56:12.43\00:56:17.49 But the final, turn to 1 Corinthians 15, if you will. 00:56:17.52\00:56:22.31 Wouldn't you know, I brought the wrong Bible with me today. 00:56:22.34\00:56:25.47 This is that little bitty print that I'm going to have a 00:56:25.50\00:56:27.56 hard time reading. 00:56:27.59\00:56:28.69 1 Corinthians 15 and let's look at verse 43 first. 00:56:30.63\00:56:37.61 This is glorification. 00:56:38.42\00:56:41.52 Let's start with verse 42. 00:56:43.92\00:56:45.95 "So also is the resurrection of the dead. 00:56:50.69\00:56:53.67 The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption. 00:56:54.64\00:57:00.29 It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. 00:57:00.32\00:57:04.30 It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. 00:57:04.33\00:57:07.49 It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. 00:57:07.52\00:57:12.49 There is a natural body and there is a spiritual body. " 00:57:13.96\00:57:17.38 Skip down to verse 53. 00:57:17.41\00:57:19.92 Because this is the consummation of glorification 00:57:21.20\00:57:25.19 when we become perfectly like Him. 00:57:26.22\00:57:28.26 "For this corruptible must put on incorruption, 00:57:28.29\00:57:32.16 and this mortal must put on immortality. " 00:57:32.19\00:57:37.89 The consummation of the glorious process of what happened, 00:57:39.66\00:57:44.50 what God began at our new birth, 1 John 3:2, John sums it up. 00:57:44.53\00:57:50.48 "Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been 00:57:50.51\00:57:54.08 revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed 00:57:54.11\00:58:00.41 we shall be..." justified, sanctified, glorified, 00:58:00.44\00:58:06.79 "we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. " 00:58:06.82\00:58:15.15 So also shall we be. 00:58:15.18\00:58:18.04
