hundreds 00:28:05.31\00:28:07.18 of faculty and thousands 00:28:07.28\00:28:08.18 of students, 00:28:08.28\00:28:09.45 we know better than most 00:28:09.55\00:28:11.25 what it means to live life 00:28:11.35\00:28:12.82 packed to the gills, 00:28:12.92\00:28:13.99 ultra burdened, double booked, 00:28:14.09\00:28:15.42 overscheduled, and under-rested. 00:28:15.52\00:28:17.76 And if you find 00:28:17.86\00:28:18.79 your anxiety level rising just 00:28:18.89\00:28:20.53 thinking of your to-do list, 00:28:20.63\00:28:23.26 there is something that 00:28:23.37\00:28:25.07 I would like you to consider. 00:28:25.17\00:28:27.07 Let me put our text back here 00:28:29.07\00:28:30.11 up on the screen. 00:28:30.21\00:28:31.04 This time we're going to add 00:28:31.14\00:28:31.71 verse 32. 00:28:31.81\00:28:33.38 Mark 6, beginning of verse 30. 00:28:33.48\00:28:34.98 If you are one of the millions 00:29:00.07\00:29:01.57 around the world 00:29:01.67\00:29:02.40 who are running too fast 00:29:02.50\00:29:04.17 and need, on occasion, 00:29:04.27\00:29:05.64 to slow down, 00:29:05.74\00:29:07.98 there's something 00:29:08.08\00:29:08.64 that this text tells us 00:29:08.74\00:29:10.15 about working for Jesus 00:29:10.25\00:29:11.75 and the specific kind of rest 00:29:11.85\00:29:14.32 that he invites us to take. 00:29:14.42\00:29:16.79 And here it is. 00:29:16.89\00:29:18.45 God's rest includes solitude. 00:29:18.55\00:29:23.02 God's rest includes solitude. 00:29:23.12\00:29:24.86 Now, some of you are saying, 00:29:24.96\00:29:25.66 "Well, duh, of course 00:29:25.76\00:29:26.53 we know that." 00:29:26.63\00:29:27.30 Well, hang with me here. 00:29:27.40\00:29:29.33 Notice carefully 00:29:29.43\00:29:30.27 that the solitude 00:29:30.37\00:29:31.40 Jesus wanted to provide for his 00:29:31.50\00:29:33.20 disciples apparently requires 00:29:33.30\00:29:35.54 a location, a place. 00:29:35.64\00:29:38.87 It says that Jesus took them 00:29:38.97\00:29:40.61 to a solitary place, 00:29:40.71\00:29:42.58 a change of scenery 00:29:42.68\00:29:44.75 that was solitary. 00:29:44.85\00:29:47.62 And this idea of the importance 00:29:47.72\00:29:49.42 of a specific place of solitude 00:29:49.52\00:29:51.25 is significantly undervalued 00:29:51.35\00:29:52.85 by far too many busy people. 00:29:52.95\00:29:54.42 But it turns out 00:29:54.52\00:29:55.66 that it is crucial to God's 00:29:55.76\00:29:56.86 plan for humanity. 00:29:56.96\00:29:58.79 And we see this very clearly 00:29:58.89\00:29:59.86 reflected in Scripture. 00:29:59.96\00:30:01.06 Just two examples at this point. 00:30:01.16\00:30:03.57 First of all, 00:30:03.67\00:30:04.90 if we were to go back 00:30:05.00\00:30:05.83 to the Genesis account, 00:30:05.93\00:30:07.27 Genesis 1 and 2, 00:30:07.37\00:30:08.30 the creation account, 00:30:08.40\00:30:09.10 we would find there 00:30:09.20\00:30:10.04 that Adam and Eve are created 00:30:10.14\00:30:12.47 and then placed 00:30:12.57\00:30:13.44 in a specific place. 00:30:13.54\00:30:15.11 Now, think about that. 00:30:15.21\00:30:17.05 Jesus is working 00:30:17.15\00:30:18.05 with a blank slate here. 00:30:18.15\00:30:19.31 In the Septuagint it says, 00:30:19.41\00:30:20.48 you know, this word that's 00:30:20.58\00:30:22.18 used to describe the planet. 00:30:22.28\00:30:23.39 There was nothing there. 00:30:23.49\00:30:24.82 The Spirit of God is hovering 00:30:24.92\00:30:25.82 over this emptiness. 00:30:25.92\00:30:27.22 Jesus could have done anything 00:30:27.32\00:30:29.19 that he wanted to do. 00:30:29.29\00:30:30.46 So he makes the planet. 00:30:32.69\00:30:34.56 He gives the whole thing 00:30:34.63\00:30:35.40 to Adam and Eve. 00:30:35.50\00:30:36.53 They're to rule over it, subdue 00:30:36.63\00:30:37.57 it, dominate it, et cetera, 00:30:37.67\00:30:38.90 as the text says. 00:30:39.00\00:30:41.57 And then, he gives them one 00:30:41.67\00:30:43.41 specific special place, Eden. 00:30:43.51\00:30:48.94 And it's there in this one 00:30:49.04\00:30:50.28 specific, special place 00:30:50.38\00:30:52.65 that, as far as we know, 00:30:52.75\00:30:53.68 Adam and Eve, this is 00:30:53.78\00:30:55.12 where they regularly walked 00:30:55.22\00:30:57.12 and talked with God. 00:30:57.22\00:30:59.95 An entire planet, 00:31:00.12\00:31:01.82 yet one specific place. 00:31:01.92\00:31:03.59 And even at the very end, 00:31:05.96\00:31:08.86 at least of this earthly life, 00:31:08.96\00:31:10.93 this idea of a special place 00:31:11.03\00:31:13.10 to be with God 00:31:13.20\00:31:14.44 still reigns very strongly. 00:31:14.54\00:31:17.57 Jesus said this in John 14:2. 00:31:17.67\00:31:19.64 He says, 00:31:19.74\00:31:20.51 "In my father's house 00:31:20.61\00:31:21.88 are many mansions. 00:31:21.98\00:31:22.78 If it were not so, 00:31:22.88\00:31:23.91 I would have told you. 00:31:24.01\00:31:25.38 I go to prepare a" what? 00:31:25.48\00:31:27.15 What does it say? 00:31:27.25\00:31:28.45 "A place for you." 00:31:28.55\00:31:30.62 Okay. For me. For you. 00:31:30.72\00:31:31.39 It's plural here. 00:31:31.49\00:31:33.15 "If it were not so," Jesus says, 00:31:33.25\00:31:34.86 "I would have told you." 00:31:34.96\00:31:35.82 You know, for years, that 00:31:35.92\00:31:36.56 puzzled me. 00:31:36.66\00:31:37.26 It seemed like this 00:31:37.36\00:31:38.19 bizarre interjection 00:31:38.29\00:31:39.63 into the flow of thought. 00:31:39.73\00:31:40.86 "In my father's house 00:31:40.96\00:31:41.56 are many mansions. 00:31:41.66\00:31:42.53 If it were not so, 00:31:42.63\00:31:43.43 I would have told you." 00:31:43.53\00:31:44.23 Well, I mean, there's probably 00:31:44.33\00:31:45.33 all kinds of things that are not 00:31:45.43\00:31:46.87 so that it doesn't trouble Jesus 00:31:46.97\00:31:49.10 that we don't know about them. 00:31:49.20\00:31:50.14 Right? 00:31:50.24\00:31:51.44 And yet here he makes 00:31:51.54\00:31:52.21 a specific point. 00:31:52.31\00:31:53.21 "If it were not so, 00:31:53.31\00:31:54.54 I would have told you." 00:31:54.64\00:31:55.41 For many years, 00:31:55.51\00:31:56.18 that puzzled me 00:31:56.28\00:31:57.65 until I recognized 00:31:57.75\00:31:59.51 that Heaven is a foretaste 00:31:59.61\00:32:01.52 of the restoration of Eden. 00:32:01.62\00:32:03.49 You know, 00:32:03.59\00:32:04.55 the Earth made new will be 00:32:04.65\00:32:05.52 the full consummation there. 00:32:05.62\00:32:06.89 The restoration of what 00:32:06.99\00:32:08.06 Eden was, right? 00:32:08.16\00:32:09.22 Creation will be restored. 00:32:09.32\00:32:10.89 But Heaven is a foretaste of it. 00:32:10.99\00:32:12.69 And apparently, in the mind of 00:32:12.79\00:32:14.96 God, in the perfection 00:32:15.06\00:32:16.43 of his plan that is Heaven, 00:32:16.53\00:32:18.83 it would be incomplete 00:32:18.93\00:32:20.64 unless you had a place. 00:32:20.74\00:32:25.34 A place to call your own, 00:32:25.44\00:32:28.01 a place in Heaven 00:32:28.11\00:32:30.18 to be with God, 00:32:30.28\00:32:32.05 to walk and to talk with him. 00:32:32.15\00:32:35.38 Apparently this is part 00:32:35.48\00:32:37.35 of what we were created for. 00:32:37.45\00:32:39.69 The divine wiring requires 00:32:39.79\00:32:42.32 solitude in a place away 00:32:42.42\00:32:45.23 from all the hustle and bustle 00:32:45.33\00:32:46.33 that we might hear 00:32:46.43\00:32:47.40 the voice of God. 00:32:47.50\00:32:48.70 Back to our story. 00:32:54.14\00:32:55.87 In Mark 6, 00:32:55.97\00:32:58.34 the idea of solitude 00:32:58.44\00:32:59.61 for the disciples requiring 00:32:59.71\00:33:01.21 a change of location 00:33:01.31\00:33:03.55 is very easy to misunderstand. 00:33:03.65\00:33:07.55 For instance, it's tempting 00:33:07.65\00:33:09.02 to pull out of this story -- 00:33:09.12\00:33:10.95 They were all the hustle bustle. 00:33:11.05\00:33:12.09 Then they had to leave 00:33:12.19\00:33:12.92 to go some other place. 00:33:13.02\00:33:13.92 It's tempting to conclude, 00:33:14.02\00:33:14.86 oh, that's 00:33:14.96\00:33:15.76 because they couldn't be 00:33:15.86\00:33:16.96 conscious of Christ's presence 00:33:17.06\00:33:18.49 in the hustle and the bustle. 00:33:18.59\00:33:19.66 That is certainly not 00:33:19.76\00:33:20.50 the message of this story. 00:33:20.60\00:33:21.53 The Bible makes that clear. 00:33:21.63\00:33:22.70 You can be walking 00:33:22.80\00:33:23.50 down a busy sidewalk 00:33:23.60\00:33:24.67 in Manhattan with thousands of 00:33:24.77\00:33:25.87 people going either direction. 00:33:25.97\00:33:27.20 You can still be 00:33:27.30\00:33:28.57 in touch with God. 00:33:28.67\00:33:30.14 It's not that He leaves us once 00:33:30.24\00:33:31.47 a crowd comes into the room. 00:33:31.57\00:33:32.31 No, no, no, no. 00:33:32.41\00:33:33.54 However, that's not the ideal. 00:33:33.64\00:33:37.88 No question about it. 00:33:37.98\00:33:39.91 Having some consciousness of God 00:33:40.02\00:33:41.35 in the busyness and 00:33:41.45\00:33:42.22 the schedules that, yes, 00:33:42.32\00:33:43.18 it's possible and we need it. 00:33:43.28\00:33:44.29 We must have it. 00:33:44.39\00:33:45.72 But it is by far -- 00:33:45.82\00:33:47.09 it's far not the ideal. 00:33:47.19\00:33:48.79 Instead, Mark 6 clearly 00:33:48.89\00:33:50.93 indicates that the disciples 00:33:51.03\00:33:52.19 were surrounded 00:33:52.29\00:33:53.09 by too many people. 00:33:53.19\00:33:55.23 It was too busy 00:33:55.33\00:33:56.30 with too many people. 00:33:56.40\00:33:57.97 And here we must ask 00:33:58.07\00:34:00.34 and answer a key question. 00:34:00.44\00:34:02.77 Why was that bad? 00:34:02.87\00:34:04.57 So, Pastor Shane, I mean, 00:34:07.51\00:34:08.41 if you've been surrounded 00:34:08.51\00:34:09.38 by people all day long, 00:34:09.48\00:34:10.05 you know exactly 00:34:10.15\00:34:10.98 what's wrong with that. 00:34:11.08\00:34:11.71 Well, not so fast. 00:34:11.81\00:34:12.61 Not so fast. 00:34:12.71\00:34:14.88 Why was it so bad 00:34:14.98\00:34:16.45 for the disciples and Jesus 00:34:16.55\00:34:17.89 to continue to hang out 00:34:17.99\00:34:19.19 there with the crowds? 00:34:19.29\00:34:21.69 I mean, think about it. 00:34:21.79\00:34:22.96 Jesus came to seek 00:34:23.06\00:34:24.09 and to save the lost. 00:34:24.19\00:34:25.33 That is to save people, right? 00:34:25.43\00:34:27.36 And if you're going to save 00:34:27.46\00:34:28.26 people, you need to be 00:34:28.36\00:34:29.23 where the people are. 00:34:29.33\00:34:29.90 And the people need to 00:34:30.00\00:34:30.57 be where you are. 00:34:30.67\00:34:31.93 So, at first glance, Mark 6, 00:34:32.03\00:34:33.74 Jesus and the disciples' 00:34:33.84\00:34:35.17 situation seems not to be 00:34:35.27\00:34:36.37 a bad one. 00:34:36.47\00:34:37.17 This is victory. 00:34:37.27\00:34:39.17 This is victory. 00:34:39.27\00:34:40.88 I mean, so many people coming 00:34:40.98\00:34:42.08 and going, they don't 00:34:42.18\00:34:42.84 even have time for lunch. 00:34:42.94\00:34:43.61 I mean, it's fantastic. 00:34:43.71\00:34:44.61 They have done so well. 00:34:44.71\00:34:46.35 I mean, 00:34:46.45\00:34:47.35 how many churches today lament 00:34:47.45\00:34:48.78 because they can't draw a crowd? 00:34:48.88\00:34:51.12 How many an evangelist 00:34:51.22\00:34:52.32 has looked out on opening night 00:34:52.42\00:34:53.36 on the crowd size, says, 00:34:53.46\00:34:54.46 "Oh, man, I wish there were 00:34:54.56\00:34:55.19 more people here." 00:34:55.29\00:34:56.32 And yet here is Jesus 00:34:56.42\00:34:57.96 and His disciples, 00:34:58.06\00:34:59.19 surrounded by the very people 00:34:59.29\00:35:01.93 that so desperately needed 00:35:02.03\00:35:03.13 what Jesus had to offer. 00:35:03.23\00:35:04.77 Why on Earth would 00:35:04.87\00:35:06.40 they need to get away from them? 00:35:06.50\00:35:08.30 Well... 00:35:13.64\00:35:17.11 The Bible doesn't tell us. 00:35:17.21\00:35:19.61 So we are left to 00:35:19.71\00:35:21.12 our sanctified imaginations 00:35:21.22\00:35:22.95 to think what 00:35:23.05\00:35:23.89 the reason might be. 00:35:23.99\00:35:24.79 And I think -- 00:35:24.89\00:35:26.05 I think I can make 00:35:26.15\00:35:26.99 a good suggestion as to 00:35:27.09\00:35:28.12 why they needed to get 00:35:28.22\00:35:29.06 away from the crowds. 00:35:29.16\00:35:29.82 Let me put it up here on 00:35:29.92\00:35:30.49 the screen for you. 00:35:30.59\00:35:32.16 Hmm. 00:35:47.94\00:35:49.41 You see, 00:35:49.51\00:35:50.38 Jesus was this divine mystery, 00:35:50.48\00:35:52.48 was He not, the incarnation? 00:35:52.58\00:35:53.92 He was fully God 00:35:54.02\00:35:55.02 and fully human 00:35:55.12\00:35:56.02 all at the same time. 00:35:56.12\00:35:56.95 If you can explain that to me, 00:35:57.05\00:35:58.09 you're smarter than I am. 00:35:58.19\00:35:59.22 But we do know 00:35:59.32\00:35:59.82 what the Bible says. 00:35:59.92\00:36:00.69 This is what it describes. 00:36:00.79\00:36:02.06 And because of this 00:36:02.16\00:36:02.82 fully human part, 00:36:02.92\00:36:03.99 without regular rest and 00:36:04.09\00:36:05.19 solitude and time 00:36:05.29\00:36:05.93 with his father, 00:36:06.03\00:36:06.49 Jesus could be 00:36:06.59\00:36:07.40 subject to temptation. 00:36:07.50\00:36:09.03 And if Jesus could be subject 00:36:09.13\00:36:10.20 to this, 00:36:10.30\00:36:11.07 how much more His dedicated 00:36:11.17\00:36:12.67 but still, oh, so immature 00:36:12.77\00:36:14.10 disciples. 00:36:14.20\00:36:16.00 Without regular time for them, 00:36:16.10\00:36:18.01 away from the crowds 00:36:18.11\00:36:19.37 that were following them, 00:36:19.47\00:36:21.01 they would eventually fall 00:36:21.11\00:36:23.01 into one of the ditches 00:36:23.11\00:36:24.38 on either side 00:36:24.48\00:36:25.31 of that discipleship path. 00:36:25.41\00:36:26.78 They would either be elated 00:36:26.88\00:36:28.48 when the crowd liked 00:36:28.58\00:36:29.55 what they did, 00:36:29.65\00:36:31.19 or they would be depressed 00:36:31.29\00:36:32.59 when the crowd didn't 00:36:32.69\00:36:33.72 like what they did. 00:36:33.82\00:36:35.79 And when the crowds were elated, 00:36:35.89\00:36:37.79 their egos would be inflated. 00:36:37.89\00:36:40.93 And to keep that going, 00:36:41.00\00:36:42.50 the winds of public opinion 00:36:42.60\00:36:44.20 would begin to guide their work 00:36:44.30\00:36:46.33 rather than the Spirit of God. 00:36:46.43\00:36:48.30 Ellen White hints at this. 00:36:51.54\00:36:52.81 "Desire of Ages," page 360. 00:36:52.91\00:36:54.71 She says, "It was 00:36:54.81\00:36:55.64 the disciples' duty." 00:36:55.74\00:36:57.35 Wow, that's a pretty strong 00:36:57.45\00:36:58.18 word there, isn't it? 00:36:58.28\00:36:59.01 "It was the disciples duty 00:36:59.11\00:37:00.52 to rest. 00:37:00.62\00:37:02.45 As the disciples had seen 00:37:02.55\00:37:03.82 the success of their labors" -- 00:37:03.92\00:37:04.92 again, witnessed 00:37:05.02\00:37:05.92 the big crowds coming and going, 00:37:06.02\00:37:07.19 can't even find time to eat -- 00:37:07.29\00:37:08.56 "they were in danger 00:37:08.66\00:37:09.86 of taking credit to themselves, 00:37:09.96\00:37:11.79 in danger of cherishing 00:37:11.89\00:37:12.83 spiritual pride, 00:37:12.93\00:37:13.93 and thus falling 00:37:14.00\00:37:14.93 under Satan's temptations. 00:37:15.03\00:37:16.43 A great work was before them, 00:37:16.53\00:37:19.43 and first of all, 00:37:19.53\00:37:20.10 they must learn 00:37:20.20\00:37:21.40 that their strength was not 00:37:21.50\00:37:22.70 in self but in God. 00:37:22.80\00:37:24.94 Like Moses in the wilderness 00:37:25.04\00:37:26.14 of Sinai, 00:37:26.24\00:37:27.41 like David among the hills 00:37:27.51\00:37:28.44 of Judea, 00:37:28.54\00:37:29.61 or Elijah by the brook Cherith, 00:37:29.71\00:37:31.71 the disciples needed to come 00:37:31.81\00:37:33.01 apart from the scenes 00:37:33.11\00:37:34.48 of their busy activity, 00:37:34.58\00:37:36.22 to commune with Christ, 00:37:36.32\00:37:37.92 with nature, 00:37:38.02\00:37:39.35 and with their own hearts." 00:37:39.45\00:37:42.32 Huh. 00:37:42.42\00:37:45.63 And, thus, Jesus says, 00:37:45.73\00:37:49.30 actually he commands it. 00:37:49.40\00:37:51.73 It's not a request, 00:37:51.83\00:37:52.57 it's a command. 00:37:52.67\00:37:54.17 Come ye apart. 00:37:54.27\00:37:56.91 Come and rest a while. 00:37:57.01\00:37:59.07 Leave the crowds. 00:37:59.17\00:38:00.64 Head for a solitary place. 00:38:00.74\00:38:04.05 Again, this is undoubtedly part 00:38:04.15\00:38:05.81 of the reason that Jesus often 00:38:05.91\00:38:06.92 spent whole nights in prayer 00:38:07.02\00:38:07.98 with His Father alone, 00:38:08.08\00:38:09.18 no one around, 00:38:09.28\00:38:10.22 in deserted and solitary 00:38:10.32\00:38:11.52 places, because it's 00:38:11.62\00:38:13.02 in those types of places 00:38:13.12\00:38:14.39 that the blur of humanity 00:38:14.49\00:38:16.22 comes more closely into focus. 00:38:16.32\00:38:18.56 The constant flow of human need 00:38:18.66\00:38:20.03 is momentarily silenced, 00:38:20.13\00:38:21.33 and a person can be. 00:38:21.43\00:38:24.27 A person can hear. 00:38:27.07\00:38:28.44 And did you notice 00:38:32.01\00:38:32.87 the three biblical blessings 00:38:32.97\00:38:34.18 that this leads to, this hearing 00:38:34.28\00:38:35.88 and this being 00:38:35.98\00:38:36.95 in the presence of God? 00:38:37.05\00:38:38.91 Found here in the last part 00:38:39.01\00:38:39.85 of this quotation here. 00:38:39.95\00:38:42.48 Biblical rest and solitude 00:38:42.58\00:38:44.42 makes it possible to commune 00:38:44.52\00:38:45.95 with Christ, 00:38:46.05\00:38:47.46 to commune with nature, and 00:38:47.56\00:38:48.72 to commune with our own hearts. 00:38:48.82\00:38:51.96 You know, communing with Christ. 00:38:52.06\00:38:52.69 We've talked about 00:38:52.79\00:38:53.26 that many a time. 00:38:53.36\00:38:54.10 I mean, of course, 00:38:54.20\00:38:55.16 this is so important. 00:38:55.26\00:38:56.16 Nothing is more important. 00:38:56.26\00:38:57.53 And peaceful times of quiet 00:38:57.63\00:38:59.17 make the voice of God 00:38:59.27\00:39:00.87 much easier to hear. 00:39:00.97\00:39:03.91 Communing with nature. 00:39:04.01\00:39:05.64 You know, this is one of the 00:39:05.74\00:39:06.81 biggest reasons that city living 00:39:06.91\00:39:08.24 can be so dangerous to one's 00:39:08.34\00:39:09.94 soul, for nature and the city is 00:39:10.05\00:39:11.88 largely paved over. 00:39:11.98\00:39:13.92 But in nature, 00:39:14.02\00:39:15.55 we learn afresh the lessons 00:39:15.65\00:39:17.42 of God's grandeur and His power 00:39:17.52\00:39:19.32 and His intelligence 00:39:19.42\00:39:20.29 and His creativity. 00:39:20.39\00:39:22.09 In nature, we also come 00:39:22.19\00:39:23.76 closer to our roots. 00:39:23.86\00:39:25.03 Remember, after all, 00:39:25.13\00:39:26.03 we're made of dirt, 00:39:26.13\00:39:28.50 and in some sense, 00:39:28.60\00:39:29.90 going out in 00:39:30.00\00:39:30.93 the soil is coming home. 00:39:31.03\00:39:33.50 You know, I always -- 00:39:33.60\00:39:34.60 It kind of brings 00:39:34.70\00:39:36.27 a dark smile to my lips, 00:39:36.37\00:39:37.71 because I've heard it so often, 00:39:37.81\00:39:39.31 that people say, "Well, you 00:39:39.41\00:39:40.44 know, Adventist schools don't 00:39:40.54\00:39:41.71 have farming programs anymore," 00:39:41.81\00:39:43.41 because we couldn't afford them. 00:39:43.51\00:39:45.11 They didn't make enough money. 00:39:45.21\00:39:47.42 As though that were the point. 00:39:47.52\00:39:49.92 The point was that 00:39:50.02\00:39:51.49 we could get our hands dirty 00:39:51.59\00:39:52.55 again, that we could 00:39:52.65\00:39:54.19 be reconnected with 00:39:54.29\00:39:55.56 nature and nature's God. 00:39:55.66\00:39:57.99 That's what it was for. 00:39:58.09\00:39:59.96 And it's when we get out there 00:40:00.06\00:40:01.06 in nature and we see the sky, 00:40:01.16\00:40:02.83 and we hear the birds, 00:40:02.93\00:40:03.80 and we see the grass, and we 00:40:03.90\00:40:05.03 hear the falling rain, 00:40:05.13\00:40:06.23 we see the lightning flash 00:40:06.33\00:40:08.07 that, in some sense, 00:40:08.17\00:40:09.27 we have a homecoming experience. 00:40:09.37\00:40:11.44 And in coming home, 00:40:11.54\00:40:12.54 we find ourselves more grounded 00:40:12.64\00:40:14.11 and purposeful 00:40:14.21\00:40:15.04 and in tune with God. 00:40:15.14\00:40:16.85 And lastly, 00:40:19.05\00:40:20.95 biblical solitude results 00:40:21.05\00:40:23.52 in communion 00:40:23.62\00:40:24.32 with our own hearts. 00:40:24.42\00:40:26.89 You know, 00:40:26.99\00:40:28.12 I'm just going to guess half 00:40:28.22\00:40:29.09 of all counselor and 00:40:29.19\00:40:30.16 psychologist visits occur 00:40:30.26\00:40:31.96 because humans don't do this. 00:40:32.06\00:40:35.13 Now, this is not an offense 00:40:35.23\00:40:36.10 to my counseling friends. 00:40:36.20\00:40:37.37 Praise the Lord for good 00:40:37.47\00:40:38.03 Christian counselors 00:40:38.13\00:40:38.80 when we need them. 00:40:38.90\00:40:39.97 And they, like me, 00:40:40.07\00:40:41.64 are in the business 00:40:41.74\00:40:42.40 that we're in 00:40:42.50\00:40:43.14 because people need help, 00:40:43.24\00:40:44.31 because people often don't do 00:40:44.41\00:40:45.37 the right thing, right? 00:40:45.47\00:40:46.84 When Heaven comes, 00:40:46.94\00:40:47.64 we'll all be out of work. 00:40:47.74\00:40:48.28 Praise the Lord. 00:40:48.38\00:40:49.68 Unemployment never 00:40:49.78\00:40:50.55 looked so good, right? 00:40:50.65\00:40:52.91 But because we don't do 00:40:53.01\00:40:54.08 these things, we get in trouble. 00:40:54.18\00:40:56.08 You know, I sometimes think 00:40:56.18\00:40:57.19 that Christians in particular, 00:40:57.29\00:40:58.49 or anyone helping others 00:40:58.59\00:40:59.85 on a regular basis, 00:40:59.95\00:41:01.29 can easily get lost 00:41:01.39\00:41:02.82 in meeting the needs 00:41:02.92\00:41:04.26 of other people while losing 00:41:04.36\00:41:06.16 their own identity in Christ. 00:41:06.26\00:41:09.13 Time apart, 00:41:09.23\00:41:10.50 even and especially apart 00:41:10.60\00:41:12.10 from those who need Jesus 00:41:12.20\00:41:13.87 and us, is therefore crucial. 00:41:13.97\00:41:15.74 He or she 00:41:15.84\00:41:16.84 who does not take the time 00:41:16.94\00:41:18.21 to know their own heart is 00:41:18.31\00:41:19.94 in great danger of losing it. 00:41:20.04\00:41:22.08 So, let it be clear. 00:41:27.32\00:41:31.75 Do come to church. 00:41:31.85\00:41:36.32 Do come to Sabbath school. 00:41:36.42\00:41:39.33 We still do need community 00:41:39.43\00:41:41.63 and iron to sharpen iron. 00:41:41.73\00:41:43.13 Et cetera, et cetera. 00:41:43.23\00:41:44.03 All of that is still true. 00:41:44.13\00:41:45.43 And we also need time apart. 00:41:45.53\00:41:49.30 Time to rest a while. 00:41:49.40\00:41:50.94 Time with God and nature 00:41:51.04\00:41:52.61 and ourselves 00:41:52.71\00:41:53.88 so we can reorient toward heaven 00:41:53.98\00:41:56.58 and be reminded afresh 00:41:56.68\00:41:57.98 that we are not 00:41:58.08\00:41:58.85 just disposable items 00:41:58.95\00:42:00.48 to be used up in a whirlwind 00:42:00.58\00:42:01.68 of good works, 00:42:01.78\00:42:02.88 but that we are God's children, 00:42:02.98\00:42:04.19 his precious, 00:42:04.29\00:42:05.12 deeply valued children. 00:42:05.22\00:42:07.12 And few things provide 00:42:07.22\00:42:08.69 that renewal 00:42:08.79\00:42:10.13 like solitary, natural places. 00:42:10.23\00:42:12.46 Just God and you. 00:42:12.56\00:42:14.56 So let me ask you the question, 00:42:17.63\00:42:20.17 when was the last time 00:42:20.27\00:42:21.80 you were alone with God? 00:42:21.90\00:42:23.07 I don't just mean like walking 00:42:26.01\00:42:27.08 from your car to the office, 00:42:27.18\00:42:28.38 or from the parking lot 00:42:28.48\00:42:29.18 to your dorm room. 00:42:29.28\00:42:30.98 I mean, for an extended period 00:42:31.08\00:42:32.38 of time, when was the last time 00:42:32.48\00:42:34.45 that you were alone with God? 00:42:34.55\00:42:36.75 Now, for some of you, 00:42:39.32\00:42:40.02 the answer is, well, 00:42:40.12\00:42:40.62 just this morning. 00:42:40.72\00:42:41.82 Praise the Lord. Keep going. 00:42:41.92\00:42:43.16 Let me pour gas on your fire. 00:42:43.26\00:42:44.33 Okay. 00:42:44.43\00:42:45.63 For some of you, 00:42:45.73\00:42:46.66 you cannot remember 00:42:46.76\00:42:47.60 the last time 00:42:47.66\00:42:48.40 that you were alone 00:42:48.50\00:42:49.46 for an extended period of time 00:42:49.56\00:42:50.93 in a solitary place with God, 00:42:51.03\00:42:52.63 and it's high time 00:42:52.73\00:42:53.70 that you got back to that. 00:42:53.80\00:42:56.47 So I plead with you, 00:42:56.57\00:42:58.61 be brutal with your calendar. 00:42:58.71\00:43:02.11 The devil is. 00:43:02.21\00:43:03.88 He watches it very closely. 00:43:03.98\00:43:06.18 You need to watch it carefully, 00:43:06.28\00:43:06.95 too. 00:43:07.05\00:43:07.82 Be brutal with it. 00:43:07.92\00:43:08.85 Make the time and space 00:43:08.95\00:43:10.52 necessary. 00:43:10.62\00:43:12.39 Find a location for solitude. 00:43:12.49\00:43:14.82 Maybe you're fortunate enough 00:43:14.92\00:43:16.29 to own some property. 00:43:16.39\00:43:17.23 Find a quiet space 00:43:17.33\00:43:18.29 on your property. 00:43:18.39\00:43:19.43 If you're in a dorm room, 00:43:19.53\00:43:20.36 find quiet time 00:43:20.46\00:43:21.20 in your dorm room 00:43:21.30\00:43:22.00 when your roommate, you know, 00:43:22.10\00:43:22.80 will not be around. 00:43:22.90\00:43:24.47 Take a solo hike 00:43:24.57\00:43:25.50 or a stroll through 00:43:25.60\00:43:26.47 a nearby nature preserve or 00:43:26.57\00:43:27.87 down a wooded trail somewhere. 00:43:27.97\00:43:28.70 We have lots 00:43:28.80\00:43:29.54 of those around here. 00:43:29.64\00:43:30.77 Maybe you need to take 00:43:30.87\00:43:31.84 a short drive to the lake 00:43:31.94\00:43:32.81 or to the river. 00:43:32.91\00:43:34.11 Perhaps after school or work, 00:43:34.21\00:43:35.64 or during the day, 00:43:35.74\00:43:36.48 if that's an option for you. 00:43:36.58\00:43:37.91 Doing it at a time when you're 00:43:38.01\00:43:39.25 fairly certain others will 00:43:39.35\00:43:40.22 not be around. 00:43:40.32\00:43:41.55 Wherever it is, 00:43:41.65\00:43:42.78 whenever you do it, 00:43:42.88\00:43:43.95 the goal is to be with God 00:43:44.05\00:43:46.35 and, in so doing, 00:43:46.45\00:43:47.49 to be refreshed 00:43:47.59\00:43:49.96 and... 00:43:50.06\00:43:53.46 something more. 00:43:53.56\00:43:55.00 "Desire of Ages," page 363. 00:43:57.87\00:44:01.07 "In all who are under 00:44:01.17\00:44:02.00 the training of God 00:44:02.10\00:44:03.87 is to be revealed a life 00:44:03.97\00:44:05.21 that is not in harmony 00:44:05.31\00:44:06.41 with the world, 00:44:06.51\00:44:07.51 its customs, or its practices. 00:44:07.61\00:44:09.91 And everyone" -- 00:44:10.01\00:44:11.11 How many people there? 00:44:11.21\00:44:12.11 What does it say? Everyone. 00:44:12.21\00:44:13.85 Okay, so no exceptions here. 00:44:13.95\00:44:14.95 "And everyone needs to have 00:44:15.05\00:44:17.19 a personal experience 00:44:17.29\00:44:19.15 in obtaining a knowledge 00:44:19.25\00:44:21.06 of the will of God." 00:44:21.16\00:44:22.12 Wouldn't you like that? 00:44:22.22\00:44:22.79 Wouldn't that be awesome 00:44:22.89\00:44:23.36 to have? 00:44:23.46\00:44:24.23 A personal knowledge 00:44:24.33\00:44:24.86 of the will of God. 00:44:24.96\00:44:26.03 "We must individually hear 00:44:26.13\00:44:28.00 Him speaking to the heart. 00:44:28.10\00:44:30.97 When every other voice is 00:44:31.07\00:44:32.63 hushed, and in quietness, 00:44:32.73\00:44:34.17 we wait before Him, 00:44:34.27\00:44:35.64 the silence of the soul makes 00:44:35.74\00:44:37.71 more distinct the voice of God. 00:44:37.81\00:44:40.18 He bids us, 'Be still, 00:44:40.28\00:44:43.21 and know that I am God.' 00:44:43.31\00:44:46.72 Psalm 46:10. 00:44:46.82\00:44:48.82 Here alone 00:44:48.92\00:44:51.39 can true rest be found. 00:44:51.49\00:44:54.16 And this is" -- 00:44:54.26\00:44:55.62 Here's the answer. 00:44:55.72\00:44:56.99 "This is the effectual 00:44:57.09\00:44:58.96 preparation for all who labor 00:44:59.06\00:45:02.26 for God." 00:45:02.36\00:45:06.07 You see, this time alone with 00:45:06.17\00:45:07.54 God in a solitary place, 00:45:07.64\00:45:09.10 absolutely, it is for you. 00:45:09.20\00:45:10.81 God loves you. 00:45:10.91\00:45:11.71 He wants you to be refreshed, 00:45:11.81\00:45:14.14 to know that he is God, 00:45:14.24\00:45:15.38 to have that knowledge, 00:45:15.48\00:45:16.48 to secure you in whatever it is 00:45:16.58\00:45:17.71 that you're going to do next. 00:45:17.81\00:45:18.91 And make no mistake, 00:45:19.01\00:45:20.92 He is preparing you 00:45:21.02\00:45:22.32 for great things to come. 00:45:22.42\00:45:25.05 That's one of the greatest 00:45:25.15\00:45:26.39 purposes of this time 00:45:26.49\00:45:27.52 alone with God. 00:45:27.62\00:45:28.32 He is preparing you 00:45:28.42\00:45:29.62 for the great things to come. 00:45:29.72\00:45:32.19 Now, this was certainly true 00:45:32.29\00:45:32.96 for the disciples. 00:45:33.06\00:45:33.83 Again, Mark chapter 6 there. 00:45:33.93\00:45:34.93 The next big event 00:45:35.00\00:45:37.03 that happens, oh, it's a doozy. 00:45:37.13\00:45:39.30 The feeding of the 5,000. 00:45:39.40\00:45:40.44 You know, 00:45:40.54\00:45:41.37 if I'm working with somebody 00:45:41.47\00:45:42.57 and they don't really have much 00:45:42.67\00:45:43.24 of a belief in God, 00:45:43.34\00:45:44.14 but they're willing at least 00:45:44.24\00:45:44.84 to listen to Scripture 00:45:44.94\00:45:45.61 to see what it says, 00:45:45.71\00:45:46.54 that's one of the places 00:45:46.64\00:45:47.41 I will take them. 00:45:47.51\00:45:47.98 How come? 00:45:48.08\00:45:49.01 Because that miracle is 00:45:49.11\00:45:50.45 very difficult to deny. 00:45:50.55\00:45:51.98 It's powerful stuff. 00:45:52.08\00:45:53.35 You cannot pull fish and loaves 00:45:53.45\00:45:55.35 out of your robes 00:45:55.45\00:45:56.32 enough to feed 5,000 00:45:56.42\00:45:58.35 or 10,000 people, as it actually 00:45:58.45\00:45:59.89 probably was closer to. 00:46:00.06\00:46:01.39 It's impossible to do. 00:46:01.49\00:46:02.46 It's one of the most 00:46:02.56\00:46:03.12 glaring evidences 00:46:03.22\00:46:04.46 of the divinity of Jesus Christ. 00:46:04.56\00:46:07.13 And to prepare for that, 00:46:07.23\00:46:09.33 Jesus said first, 00:46:09.43\00:46:12.93 "Let's go and be quiet 00:46:13.03\00:46:15.40 so that you can commune with me 00:46:15.50\00:46:17.61 and with nature 00:46:17.71\00:46:19.34 and your own souls." 00:46:19.44\00:46:21.14 You know, we here at Pioneer 00:46:23.95\00:46:25.08 also have some great things 00:46:25.18\00:46:25.98 that are coming up in 00:46:26.08\00:46:26.85 the not too distant future. 00:46:26.95\00:46:29.02 We've talked about this 00:46:29.12\00:46:29.65 a number of times. 00:46:29.75\00:46:30.25 New strategic plan 00:46:30.35\00:46:31.32 that's soon to be started, 00:46:31.42\00:46:32.49 implementation, some 00:46:32.59\00:46:33.46 of it over the summer. 00:46:33.56\00:46:34.36 We're beginning implementation 00:46:34.46\00:46:35.72 in earnest in the fall 00:46:35.82\00:46:36.73 with the new school year. 00:46:36.83\00:46:37.99 And with it, 00:46:38.09\00:46:38.89 new opportunities for ministry 00:46:38.99\00:46:40.16 are going to come, new 00:46:40.26\00:46:41.13 opportunities for relationships 00:46:41.23\00:46:42.50 and deepening community with us, 00:46:42.60\00:46:43.83 with our university students, 00:46:43.93\00:46:45.03 with high school students, 00:46:45.13\00:46:46.37 elementary school students, 00:46:46.47\00:46:47.40 members of our community, 00:46:47.50\00:46:49.00 getting to know them better, 00:46:49.10\00:46:50.04 that they might come to know 00:46:50.14\00:46:50.84 Jesus Christ, as well. 00:46:50.94\00:46:52.61 And with all of the hustle 00:46:52.71\00:46:53.98 and bustle and busyness 00:46:54.08\00:46:55.11 that is present now 00:46:55.21\00:46:56.75 and that's coming on 00:46:56.85\00:46:57.75 the near horizon, 00:46:57.85\00:46:59.68 my humble suggestion is this -- 00:46:59.78\00:47:01.82 let us use the summer 00:47:01.92\00:47:03.89 to rest and recharge with God. 00:47:03.99\00:47:07.89 Or if your summer schedule 00:47:07.99\00:47:09.12 does not have a natural break 00:47:09.22\00:47:10.29 built into it, 00:47:10.39\00:47:11.19 create some similar 00:47:11.29\00:47:12.46 natural breaks, 00:47:12.56\00:47:13.70 some smaller natural breaks 00:47:13.80\00:47:15.73 that you might be refreshed 00:47:15.83\00:47:17.47 and that you might be prepared 00:47:17.57\00:47:18.57 for the great things 00:47:18.67\00:47:19.57 God has coming. 00:47:19.67\00:47:20.97 And by the way, 00:47:23.34\00:47:26.54 please don't let the solitary 00:47:26.64\00:47:28.94 quiet time be seen by you 00:47:29.04\00:47:32.45 as an interruption 00:47:32.55\00:47:33.78 and an irritant 00:47:33.88\00:47:35.75 in your schedule. 00:47:35.85\00:47:36.92 It reminds me of a story. 00:47:39.05\00:47:41.46 Many years ago, yea, verily, 00:47:41.56\00:47:43.56 in the last millennium, 00:47:43.66\00:47:44.39 when my wife and I were not 00:47:44.49\00:47:45.49 my wife and I, we were dating. 00:47:45.59\00:47:46.43 We were 00:47:46.53\00:47:47.23 boyfriend and girlfriend. 00:47:47.36\00:47:48.70 We were on our way back 00:47:48.80\00:47:49.73 from summer camp 00:47:49.83\00:47:50.67 after working there, 00:47:50.77\00:47:52.07 and she was in her car. 00:47:52.17\00:47:53.57 I was in my car. 00:47:53.67\00:47:55.14 You may remember a story 00:47:55.24\00:47:55.97 I told about this 00:47:56.07\00:47:56.74 about a year and a half ago. 00:47:56.84\00:47:57.54 This is a different story. 00:47:57.64\00:47:58.81 You may not want to caravan with 00:47:58.91\00:48:00.28 us after you've heard stories 00:48:00.38\00:48:01.14 like this too much. 00:48:01.24\00:48:02.88 She was in what I believe 00:48:02.98\00:48:05.31 was a 1978, 00:48:05.41\00:48:07.22 maybe '79 Honda Civic 00:48:07.32\00:48:11.85 Hondamatic. 00:48:11.95\00:48:14.59 Some of you remember 00:48:14.69\00:48:16.09 the dark days of the '70s. 00:48:16.19\00:48:18.53 Those were difficult days for 00:48:18.63\00:48:20.33 people that enjoyed automobiles. 00:48:20.43\00:48:22.13 Smog restrictions 00:48:22.23\00:48:23.37 were just coming in, and her 00:48:23.47\00:48:24.17 car had the Hondamatic 00:48:24.27\00:48:26.84 transmission. 00:48:26.94\00:48:27.74 Now, a Hondamatic transmission. 00:48:27.84\00:48:29.37 Honda makes some fine cars. 00:48:29.47\00:48:30.54 This transmission I wasn't 00:48:30.64\00:48:31.44 super fond of. 00:48:31.54\00:48:32.91 It had two speeds, no joke. 00:48:33.01\00:48:33.91 Two speeds. 00:48:34.01\00:48:34.74 It was a two-speed transmission. 00:48:34.84\00:48:36.11 Those two speeds were 00:48:36.21\00:48:38.31 comatose and rigor mortis. Okay? 00:48:38.41\00:48:41.62 And very, very slow car, 00:48:41.72\00:48:43.22 you know. 00:48:43.32\00:48:44.42 And, so, we're driving. 00:48:44.52\00:48:46.62 I'm something of a mechanic. 00:48:46.72\00:48:47.79 Don't, like, ask me 00:48:47.89\00:48:49.02 to do professional stuff, 00:48:49.12\00:48:50.49 but I can keep my cars running. 00:48:50.59\00:48:51.96 My car was running fine. 00:48:52.06\00:48:53.63 Her car, she'd said there's 00:48:53.73\00:48:54.66 some troubles with it. 00:48:54.76\00:48:55.43 I don't know exactly what it 00:48:55.53\00:48:56.50 was, I hadn't paid 00:48:56.60\00:48:57.47 that much attention to it. 00:48:57.57\00:48:58.53 We start out on what was 00:48:58.63\00:49:00.17 to be about a 4- or 5-hour trip. 00:49:00.27\00:49:02.27 Okay, if everything went well. 00:49:02.37\00:49:04.64 And we're headed someplace, 00:49:04.74\00:49:05.97 I don't remember where it was, 00:49:06.07\00:49:07.38 but to me, it was important. 00:49:07.48\00:49:08.74 We were going to conquer 00:49:08.84\00:49:09.81 the highway, right? 00:49:09.91\00:49:11.25 We're headed 00:49:11.35\00:49:12.55 to this important destination. 00:49:12.65\00:49:13.95 And about 10, 15 minutes 00:49:14.05\00:49:15.02 into the trip, 00:49:15.12\00:49:16.08 Darlene pulls over to the side 00:49:16.18\00:49:17.25 of the road in her Robin egg 00:49:17.35\00:49:19.59 blue Hondamatic two speed. 00:49:19.69\00:49:21.99 And I pull in with my 240Z, 00:49:22.09\00:49:24.73 and I get out of the car. 00:49:24.83\00:49:25.73 I said, "What's the problem?" 00:49:25.83\00:49:27.23 And she says, "I don't know. 00:49:27.36\00:49:29.46 It just stopped running." 00:49:29.56\00:49:31.50 So, being mechanically minded, 00:49:31.60\00:49:32.97 I pop open the hood, 00:49:33.07\00:49:34.67 try to look, see what's wrong. 00:49:34.77\00:49:36.00 No smoke, nothing leaking. 00:49:36.10\00:49:37.47 Can't tell if there's -- 00:49:37.57\00:49:38.37 No electrical connections appear 00:49:38.47\00:49:39.57 to be in the wrong place, 00:49:39.67\00:49:40.51 et cetera. 00:49:40.61\00:49:41.71 I don't know. Close the hood. 00:49:41.81\00:49:43.75 We wait a little bit. 00:49:43.85\00:49:44.95 Turns the key. Starts right up. 00:49:45.05\00:49:46.38 Ah! Problem fixed. Great. 00:49:46.48\00:49:48.45 Back on the road. 00:49:48.55\00:49:50.82 She goes from 00:49:50.92\00:49:51.79 comatose to rigor mortis. 00:49:51.89\00:49:52.79 We're cruising along. 00:49:52.89\00:49:54.62 And about 10, 00:49:54.72\00:49:55.56 15 minutes later, it dies again. 00:49:55.66\00:49:56.79 She pulls over 00:49:56.89\00:49:57.56 the side of the road. 00:49:57.66\00:49:59.16 I get out of my car, I come. 00:49:59.26\00:50:00.06 I said, what happened? 00:50:00.16\00:50:01.10 She said, "Well, it died again." 00:50:01.20\00:50:01.83 I said, "Well, did you do 00:50:01.93\00:50:03.40 anything, did you hit a button? 00:50:03.50\00:50:04.50 Did you do the wrong this, 00:50:04.60\00:50:05.63 that, and the other?" 00:50:05.73\00:50:06.47 "Well, no." Pop the hood. 00:50:06.57\00:50:07.97 Look around. Can't see anything. 00:50:08.07\00:50:09.24 Nothing seems to be wrong. 00:50:09.34\00:50:10.54 Close the hood. 00:50:10.64\00:50:11.41 We wait a little bit. 00:50:11.51\00:50:12.44 Turn the key. Starts right up. 00:50:12.54\00:50:13.74 This went on 00:50:16.98\00:50:18.35 for hundreds of miles. 00:50:18.45\00:50:20.38 Every 10 to 15 minutes, 00:50:20.48\00:50:22.35 this little Robin egg blue 00:50:22.45\00:50:24.19 Hondamatic curse would die. 00:50:24.29\00:50:26.02 And we'd pull over 00:50:26.12\00:50:27.16 to the side of the road. 00:50:27.26\00:50:27.92 And by time 4 or 5, 00:50:28.02\00:50:29.56 I am getting irritated. 00:50:29.66\00:50:30.83 I can't believe that. 00:50:30.93\00:50:32.03 We got important things to go. 00:50:32.13\00:50:33.46 Destination is receding 00:50:33.56\00:50:35.43 beyond the sunset, right? 00:50:35.53\00:50:37.13 And I can't find what's 00:50:37.23\00:50:38.10 wrong with this thing. 00:50:38.20\00:50:38.83 There's no smoke, there's no 00:50:38.93\00:50:39.73 steam, there's no nothing. 00:50:39.83\00:50:40.64 It's not vapor lock. 00:50:40.74\00:50:41.50 I can't figure this out. 00:50:41.60\00:50:42.64 So I am irritated. 00:50:42.74\00:50:44.04 Every single time this little 00:50:44.14\00:50:45.77 car decides to take a break, 00:50:45.87\00:50:47.24 I get hotter under the collar. 00:50:47.34\00:50:48.64 Now contrast this 00:50:52.41\00:50:55.42 with the bright, sunny, 00:50:55.52\00:50:57.92 peach-filled-with-cream day 00:50:58.02\00:51:00.22 that Darlene was having. 00:51:00.32\00:51:02.39 You see, 00:51:02.49\00:51:03.76 every time her little car died 00:51:03.86\00:51:05.86 and she pulled over to the side 00:51:05.96\00:51:07.23 of the road, she was elated. 00:51:07.30\00:51:09.73 Because, you see, as I said, 00:51:09.83\00:51:11.43 we were coming back 00:51:11.53\00:51:12.17 from summer camp, 00:51:12.27\00:51:13.10 and we worked at Sunset Lake 00:51:13.20\00:51:14.20 Summer Camp in Washington State. 00:51:14.30\00:51:15.40 And I don't know if this is 00:51:15.50\00:51:16.37 still true today, but in those 00:51:16.47\00:51:17.31 days, dating among 00:51:17.41\00:51:18.81 staff members was not allowed. 00:51:18.91\00:51:20.48 Well, we were thoroughly 00:51:20.58\00:51:21.78 dating, and so, I was guys 00:51:21.88\00:51:24.11 director for two years, she was 00:51:24.21\00:51:25.21 girls director for two years. 00:51:25.31\00:51:26.08 We did that together. 00:51:26.18\00:51:27.45 And, so, both those summers 00:51:27.55\00:51:29.48 were, you know, we could not 00:51:29.58\00:51:30.72 let on to the campers 00:51:30.82\00:51:32.39 that we were dating. 00:51:32.49\00:51:33.42 We didn't want to be a 00:51:33.52\00:51:34.39 distraction, you know, as often 00:51:34.49\00:51:36.02 happens if relationships are 00:51:36.12\00:51:36.56 there. 00:51:36.66\00:51:37.39 So that's all done now. 00:51:37.49\00:51:39.46 We're driving to this wherever 00:51:39.56\00:51:40.86 it was that we're going. 00:51:40.96\00:51:41.70 We're leaving camp. 00:51:41.80\00:51:42.80 She's excited 00:51:42.90\00:51:44.20 that now she gets to see me. 00:51:44.30\00:51:45.67 We have been set 00:51:45.77\00:51:46.70 free in her mind, right? 00:51:46.80\00:51:48.14 And I can still see it, 00:51:48.24\00:51:49.10 like on time 3 or 4 00:51:49.20\00:51:50.47 this thing happened. 00:51:50.57\00:51:51.54 Dies over, pulls over the side. 00:51:51.64\00:51:52.74 "Oh, not again," 00:51:52.84\00:51:53.54 I'm thinking to myself. 00:51:53.64\00:51:54.91 She opens her door, she gets 00:51:55.01\00:51:56.71 out, big smile on her face. 00:51:56.81\00:51:58.95 She prances like this gazelle 00:51:59.05\00:52:00.78 back to the passenger side of my 00:52:00.88\00:52:02.02 car, opens the door, gets in 00:52:02.12\00:52:02.85 and sits down, and says, 00:52:02.95\00:52:03.89 "How are you doing?" 00:52:03.99\00:52:06.15 Oh. 00:52:06.25\00:52:08.06 Because for her, 00:52:09.79\00:52:11.56 every single time there was 00:52:11.66\00:52:12.86 this break, 00:52:12.96\00:52:14.56 it was a time to reconnect. 00:52:14.66\00:52:16.33 For me, I got closer 00:52:16.43\00:52:18.63 and closer to a heart attack 00:52:18.73\00:52:20.14 every time that happened, right? 00:52:20.24\00:52:22.40 And my guess is, 00:52:22.50\00:52:23.61 if you were to compare our 00:52:23.71\00:52:24.97 vital health statistics 00:52:25.07\00:52:26.31 at the end of that trip, 00:52:26.41\00:52:27.48 which took a very long time 00:52:27.58\00:52:28.64 to get to wherever it was 00:52:28.74\00:52:29.34 that we were going, 00:52:29.44\00:52:30.58 I would have probably lost 00:52:30.68\00:52:31.88 weight from sweating 00:52:31.98\00:52:33.05 and my blood pressure 00:52:33.15\00:52:34.52 would have been highly elevated, 00:52:34.62\00:52:36.02 and Darlene would have just had 00:52:36.12\00:52:37.12 a little smiley face 00:52:37.22\00:52:38.09 and a ray of sunshine 00:52:38.19\00:52:39.05 coming down on her 00:52:39.15\00:52:39.95 health report card, okay? 00:52:40.06\00:52:41.46 Isn't it interesting the 00:52:45.19\00:52:46.83 difference it can make, 00:52:46.93\00:52:48.60 one's attitude 00:52:48.70\00:52:50.90 towards interruptions of rest. 00:52:51.00\00:52:54.04 Ladies and gentlemen, 00:52:58.44\00:52:59.51 we are indeed headed for 00:52:59.61\00:53:00.61 some great things. 00:53:00.71\00:53:02.38 I believe that Jesus Christ is 00:53:02.48\00:53:03.61 on his way, 00:53:03.71\00:53:04.75 that he is anxious to get down 00:53:04.85\00:53:06.65 to this planet 00:53:06.75\00:53:08.12 and put an end to sin 00:53:08.22\00:53:09.78 and take us home to be with him. 00:53:09.88\00:53:11.89 I am so glad 00:53:11.99\00:53:13.46 that that is the great thing 00:53:13.56\00:53:14.56 that we are headed on. 00:53:14.66\00:53:15.59 We're on a great journey. 00:53:15.69\00:53:16.73 And unlike me in that following 00:53:16.83\00:53:18.99 my wife and her Hondamatic 00:53:19.09\00:53:20.00 there, who didn't know 00:53:20.10\00:53:21.63 where -- I can't remember 00:53:21.73\00:53:22.43 where we were going. 00:53:22.53\00:53:23.43 We know where we're going. 00:53:23.53\00:53:24.67 We're going to Jesus. 00:53:24.77\00:53:26.17 Jesus is our goal. 00:53:26.27\00:53:27.70 He is the destination. 00:53:27.80\00:53:29.04 Great things are coming. 00:53:29.14\00:53:30.47 Great things 00:53:30.57\00:53:31.57 for which we must be ready. 00:53:31.67\00:53:34.84 But too often on 00:53:34.94\00:53:37.65 our way to great things, 00:53:37.75\00:53:39.15 we see rest and recovery 00:53:39.25\00:53:41.08 time as interruptions and 00:53:41.18\00:53:43.08 irritants rather than gifts. 00:53:43.18\00:53:46.45 So, please, don't make the 00:53:46.55\00:53:48.89 mistake that I did with that 00:53:48.99\00:53:50.49 Robin egg blue Hondamatic. 00:53:50.59\00:53:53.70 Instead, remember the lesson 00:53:53.80\00:53:55.80 that Jesus taught his disciples, 00:53:55.90\00:53:58.27 and that is that the best 00:53:58.37\00:54:00.30 take a rest. 00:54:00.40\00:54:02.50 The best, 00:54:02.60\00:54:03.84 most productive followers 00:54:03.94\00:54:05.21 of Jesus make time 00:54:05.31\00:54:06.44 for regular rest. 00:54:06.54\00:54:08.11 Real, honest, soul level rest. 00:54:08.21\00:54:10.48 Because such rest 00:54:10.58\00:54:11.48 is not an option. 00:54:11.58\00:54:12.68 It's a blessed requirement given 00:54:12.78\00:54:14.12 by Jesus himself. 00:54:14.22\00:54:15.75 It is the gift of a gracious God 00:54:15.85\00:54:18.05 who knows that his children are 00:54:18.15\00:54:19.42 not ministry machines, 00:54:19.52\00:54:21.52 but rather our deeply loved sons 00:54:21.62\00:54:22.92 and daughters 00:54:23.02\00:54:23.89 who deserve to live balanced, 00:54:23.99\00:54:25.66 fulfilled, and genuinely 00:54:25.76\00:54:26.96 powerful lives for Him. 00:54:27.03\00:54:29.53 May your summer season, 00:54:29.63\00:54:31.03 or whatever break you create, 00:54:31.13\00:54:32.93 be a good one 00:54:33.03\00:54:35.74 and may each one of us 00:54:35.84\00:54:37.17 find our rest in Him 00:54:37.27\00:54:39.41 as we prepare for the great 00:54:39.51\00:54:41.64 things and harvest to come. 00:54:41.74\00:54:43.95 [ "A Quiet Place" begins ] 00:54:48.82\00:54:51.92 >> I'm Shane Anderson, 00:56:51.97\00:56:52.97 the lead pastor here 00:56:53.07\00:56:54.28 at Pioneer Memorial Church. 00:56:54.38\00:56:56.61 At Pioneer Media, we have been 00:56:56.71\00:56:58.28 blessed by the financial support 00:56:58.38\00:57:00.18 that comes from our viewers 00:57:00.28\00:57:01.35 like you, that enable us 00:57:01.45\00:57:03.15 to continue this ministry. 00:57:03.25\00:57:05.59 We've made a conscious decision 00:57:05.69\00:57:06.99 not to continually appeal to you 00:57:07.09\00:57:08.46 for that support. 00:57:08.56\00:57:10.16 However, keeping this ministry 00:57:10.26\00:57:11.36 going takes money to support 00:57:11.46\00:57:13.19 our staff and technology needs. 00:57:13.29\00:57:15.80 If God has blessed you 00:57:15.90\00:57:17.43 and you would like to further 00:57:17.53\00:57:18.30 the work of this ministry, 00:57:18.40\00:57:19.97 we invite you to partner 00:57:20.07\00:57:20.94 with us.
