Bless you. Thank you for singing 00:21:51.37\00:21:57.51 with us and for us. I want to think about war for a minute. 00:21:57.51\00:22:02.72 Come on. I got a -- I got a... a weapon right here, and, so, if it's okay with you, 00:22:02.72\00:22:07.66 I'll just come and reach under this piano and pull it out. It's from a friend of mine 00:22:07.66\00:22:13.36 named Errol Prentice And we're talking about the real deal 00:22:13.36\00:22:20.40 here, folks. I don't know if you can recognize it from where you 00:22:20.40\00:22:25.01 are. And Errol told me you got to put your hand through this so that, if you drop it -- and, oh, 00:22:25.01\00:22:30.25 boy, I do not want to drop it. This is one expensive piece of 00:22:30.25\00:22:33.72 equipment. Oh, this is backwards. Do you know what this is? Yeah. I'm not even sure 00:22:33.72\00:22:42.59 right now what it is. I don't -- Oh, there it is. I got it. I got 00:22:42.59\00:22:47.50 it. Yeah. This is a bow. This is a real live bow. This is not 00:22:47.50\00:22:53.64 little cowboys and Indians bow. This is the real deal. I'm not 00:22:53.64\00:22:57.31 going to tell you how much it cost. But Errol has become just a pro. He's the champion 00:22:57.31\00:23:03.31 leader of our Pathfinders, and he's been teaching archery. The reason I have this bow 00:23:03.31\00:23:10.05 in my hand is because, for a few moments, I want to think about 00:23:10.05\00:23:13.52 war, and you'll see how it fits in in just a second. I have more 00:23:13.52\00:23:16.62 to tell you about this, but I got to reach into my pocket because people say that, 00:23:16.62\00:23:20.50 when it comes to war, there are four options. All right? Four 00:23:20.50\00:23:26.03 options. These are responses you can make in a war. Here we go. Option number one -- offense. 00:23:26.03\00:23:31.34 Come on. You know what that is. Option number two -- defense. Ooh, you know what that is. 00:23:31.34\00:23:38.48 Option number three -- détente. Ooh. What is that? We'll get to 00:23:38.48\00:23:43.99 that in a moment. And option number four -- desertion, just running away. I want to go 00:23:43.99\00:23:48.52 to that little French word that's sitting there, détente. Do you know what that old -- 00:23:48.52\00:23:53.76 It's from old French. Do you know what the word means? I'll 00:23:53.76\00:23:58.40 tell you. "De" means it negates it. It takes something away. And "tendere," "tendere" -- 00:23:58.40\00:24:06.07 Yeah, wrong word. "Tendere" means "tension." So it's old 00:24:06.07\00:24:12.18 French when they had crossbows. You remember crossbows. The word 00:24:12.18\00:24:18.45 means to take away the tension of the bowstring. No more tension. And you know what? 00:24:18.45\00:24:24.26 If I release this -- this is 80 pounds, by the way. 80 pounds of 00:24:24.26\00:24:28.23 pressure right here. So when Errol pulls his hand back, it's 00:24:28.23\00:24:33.64 80 pounds worth. Do you know, I scribbled this down in between services because he didn't share 00:24:33.64\00:24:37.74 this with me till then. This -- This bow is able to shoot an 00:24:37.74\00:24:47.08 arrow 280 yards. That's almost three football fields. It has a 00:24:47.08\00:24:51.85 super duper -- super duper electronic... Don't point it at anybody. Said, okay. 00:24:51.85\00:24:55.99 A super duper electronic laser scope. It's -- One of these 00:24:55.99\00:25:06.17 arrows travels at 300 feet per second. That's an entire football field. Pshoo! 00:25:06.17\00:25:13.71 Unbelievable. But détente means you lower the tension. 00:25:13.71\00:25:19.91 These become floppy and flabby. And that's why, in diplomacy -- French is the language of 00:25:19.91\00:25:25.59 diplomacy -- the diplomat said, "Hey, we got two superpowers 00:25:25.59\00:25:29.52 here. They're not getting along. We've got to find out a way. It's not peace on Earth 00:25:29.52\00:25:32.33 like you're just saying yet. We've got to find a way to work 00:25:32.33\00:25:36.40 it out. And they called it détente. We're going to lower the tensions on the planet. 00:25:36.40\00:25:44.94 So how many strategies are there when it comes to life? Winston 00:25:44.94\00:25:51.78 Churchill, the great intrepid leader of the British Empire during World War II, 00:25:51.78\00:25:57.32 during those dark days, he sent a message to one of his 00:25:57.32\00:26:02.46 admirals, Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten, Secretary of the Admiralty, that would be the 00:26:02.46\00:26:07.60 Department of Navy. He sent this message. He said, "All right, 00:26:07.60\00:26:10.13 you want to talk about strategy in the war? Here are my orders 00:26:10.13\00:26:13.30 to you." You're saying, "Yo, right. Well, that's great for military, but how about life 00:26:22.48\00:26:26.85 strategy?" I want to suggest to you -- and I'm going to put a line in front of your eyes 00:26:26.85\00:26:30.95 in just a moment -- I want to suggest that there's only one strategy even in life. 00:26:30.95\00:26:35.16 In fact, if you open your Bible. And I'm going to put this down because we're going to come back 00:26:35.16\00:26:38.39 to it in just a second. If you open your Bible to 1 Timothy 6. 00:26:38.39\00:26:43.83 So Paul, a greater leader than Winston Churchill, in my humble 00:26:43.83\00:26:48.67 opinion, intrepid vagabond preacher, evangelist and missionary, greatest Christian 00:26:48.67\00:26:52.27 who ever lived. Paul is writing to a young protege of his named 00:26:52.27\00:26:56.54 Timothy, and he gives him, "How many of those four options are you going to take?" 00:26:56.54\00:27:00.55 Well, this would be good for us. Let's find out. 1 Timothy 6. 00:27:00.55\00:27:04.62 We'll pick it up in verse 11. That will run into that one 00:27:04.62\00:27:08.62 line. "Offense," Churchill says, "We want offense. Forget defense." Okay, here we go. 00:27:08.62\00:27:15.16 1 Timothy 6:11 "But you men of God" -- woman of God, teen of 00:27:15.16\00:27:19.93 God, people of God -- "but you flee from all this." He's just 00:27:19.93\00:27:24.41 been talking about greed and the love of money and covetousness. 00:27:24.41\00:27:28.61 Now here it comes. "Fight the good fight of faith." Of those 00:27:36.05\00:27:40.96 four options, which do you think that is? It's only one. It's the 00:27:40.96\00:27:44.36 first one. What's the first one? Offense. You have no other option. And by the way, 00:27:44.36\00:27:51.47 that's true for you and me. No other option -- offense. But this really gets dramatic 00:27:51.47\00:27:55.70 when we take this line and we put it in the Greek. And, so, these won't be Greek 00:27:55.70\00:28:00.71 letters. I've transferred them into English, but it will sound 00:28:00.71\00:28:07.52 like the Greek. 00:28:07.52\00:28:09.22 Let's just take these two words here -- agonizou, agona. Can you think of an English 00:28:13.69\00:28:18.79 word that kind of sounds like that? Agonizou, agona. 00:28:18.79\00:28:22.73 Say it fast -- agonizou, agona. What's the word? Can you hear a 00:28:22.73\00:28:26.43 word? Yeah, you got it. Agonize and agony. Fight the good fight 00:28:26.43\00:28:31.41 of faith means agonize the good agony. Come on. No, I'm serious. 00:28:31.41\00:28:36.95 That's what it's saying here. Agonize, agony. I point all of 00:28:36.95\00:28:43.18 this out to us so that we don't think this little one-line insertion at the end of his 00:28:43.18\00:28:47.89 letter to Timothy is some sort of throwaway, you know, just a 00:28:47.89\00:28:50.63 little bit of a namby-pamby advice. You've heard the line, "when the going gets tough," 00:28:50.63\00:28:54.86 how does it end? When the going gets tough, the tough get going. 00:28:54.86\00:28:58.40 Yeah, but what does that mean? Really? The word Paul chooses 00:28:58.40\00:29:05.97 has life and death written all over it. He's talking about 00:29:05.97\00:29:11.75 fight. Agony. Agonize. Hey, wait a minute. Some of you sitting 00:29:11.75\00:29:15.48 here right now, man, you got such beautiful faces. I couldn't tell what's in your 00:29:15.48\00:29:20.09 heart right now if I tried. But behind all of that -- all of 00:29:20.09\00:29:25.63 that manicured look of yours, there's some people here right now going through agony. 00:29:25.63\00:29:31.30 They are agonizing to the depths. They are broken. 00:29:31.30\00:29:34.74 We show up at church and show up on Academy campus. "What is it? 00:29:34.74\00:29:38.37 Yeah. Hey, yo, bro. How are you? High five. How are you doing?" 00:29:38.37\00:29:42.78 "Great." Nobody ever knows. One of you here, a bunch of us here 00:29:42.78\00:29:50.05 -- agony. I got a young friend. He's younger than my son. He is 00:29:50.05\00:29:55.92 going right now, battling for his life through the agony, fighting, agonizou, 00:29:55.92\00:30:01.53 he is fighting the dreadful enemy of cancer. It is a mortal 00:30:01.53\00:30:09.27 battle. And he's in it to the hilt. Agony. Agonizing. Nah, this is not just a little 00:30:09.27\00:30:19.95 PS at the end of a very important letter. No, this is a 00:30:19.95\00:30:23.89 whole letter. This is life and death. And you know why it's 00:30:23.89\00:30:26.89 life and death? Because when you agonize, when you feel agony, the stakes are huge. 00:30:26.89\00:30:34.36 They are absolutely high. What's amazing to me is that what Paul 00:30:34.36\00:30:39.73 is really writing here is this, if you put it in the English translation. "Agonize the good 00:30:39.73\00:30:45.67 agony." You say, "How could -- How could it possibly be ever 00:30:45.67\00:30:52.31 true that there is such a thing as good agony?" The only way I can think about it, because it's 00:30:52.31\00:30:57.09 obviously what it says, "Agonize the good agony." The only way I 00:30:57.09\00:31:02.39 can think it would be good is if the cause that you're engaged in is worth dying for. 00:31:02.39\00:31:13.03 >> It's not worth dying for, I mean, please. Who cares? But if it's worth dying for, 00:31:13.03\00:31:18.87 hmm. I'm watching these soldiers in the Ukraine, 00:31:18.87\00:31:22.91 and what, we just finished, what, one year in Ukraine? Unbelievable, tragic, tragic 00:31:22.91\00:31:27.38 war, in my humble opinion. But when the war correspondent comes up to those soldiers, 00:31:27.38\00:31:34.19 young guys already battle-hardened, and an interpreter's standing there, 00:31:34.19\00:31:37.83 and I'm listening to the English, saying, "How long are you going to fight?" 00:31:37.83\00:31:41.63 "We will fight, we will agonize to the last man." Because that's 00:31:41.63\00:31:47.74 the way a soldier fights. You're all in. And by the way, I'm just 00:31:47.74\00:31:54.11 thinking, if you and I don't have a cause worth dying for, really, we're going to end up 00:31:54.11\00:32:00.98 with a life not worth living for. Come on. Do you have -- 00:32:00.98\00:32:07.72 What's the cause? I know we're teens, everybody in the front here. And good on you. 00:32:07.72\00:32:12.09 You're strategically placed, by the way. And I'm so glad you are 00:32:12.09\00:32:15.66 on the campus as you are. You are strategically placed because teens have an inner -- 00:32:15.66\00:32:21.97 an inner energy that enables you, in the face of others who are not standing as you are, 00:32:21.97\00:32:29.41 to jump up and say, "I do. I will. Count me in." So I'm asking you teens up 00:32:29.41\00:32:36.42 front, what is it that you have found worth dying for? Have you found anything yet? 00:32:36.42\00:32:43.06 Too young, huh? No, some of you already are honing in on it. 00:32:43.06\00:32:51.57 "Agonize the good agony." Which is why now I'm going to drill down a little deeper here. 00:32:51.57\00:32:58.87 I need you to hang on here. Which is why the biggest threat to freedom in the world -- 00:32:58.87\00:33:04.65 I'm going to say this. The biggest threat to the church. 00:33:04.65\00:33:07.32 All right? Here we are. We're all at church right now. The biggest threat to the church 00:33:07.32\00:33:11.09 is non-engagement. Which doesn't mean you renounce the cause 00:33:11.09\00:33:16.49 that the church stands for. Unh-unh. Not at all. You simply 00:33:16.49\00:33:22.76 stop defending it. You no longer engage it. You no longer battle it. Even as a teen, come on, 00:33:22.76\00:33:28.24 you're critical. "But, nah, I'm not in it right now. 00:33:28.24\00:33:32.51 I'll get in it later, maybe." No. 00:33:32.51\00:33:36.04 What's threatening culture and church -- non-engagement. 00:33:36.08\00:33:43.22 Spiritual non-engagement. And now 00:33:43.22\00:33:45.25 I'm really drilling down. >> Don't leave me now. 00:33:45.25\00:33:48.66 Spiritual non-engagement is the fruit 00:33:48.66\00:33:51.96 of our valueless culture, where everybody's preference 00:33:51.96\00:33:56.83 needs to be tolerated and defended. 00:33:56.83\00:34:00.47 That's the culture today. Or at least allowed a place 00:34:00.47\00:34:03.57 at the table. "Come on, You can sit here. 00:34:03.57\00:34:06.17 Come on. No, no, no, no, no." 00:34:06.17\00:34:09.64 You know what? That may feel like bold equality. 00:34:09.68\00:34:13.55 But in my book, it's feckless timidity. Say, "Hey, it doesn't 00:34:13.55\00:34:18.09 matter what you believe." It's that old jingle on social media. 00:34:18.09\00:34:22.22 Have you heard it? "Nobody's right. Nobody's wrong. We simply have to get along." 00:34:22.22\00:34:25.53 You ever heard that one? Nobody's right. Nobody's wrong. We simply have to get along. 00:34:25.53\00:34:30.23 Nobody's right. Nobody's wrong. We simply have to get along. 00:34:30.23\00:34:34.40 Come on. Not on your life. Are you kidding? When we have a 00:34:34.40\00:34:38.37 mortal enemy who has his arrow in place and all he needs is for permission, in a heartbeat, that 00:34:38.37\00:34:46.05 arrow is released -- pshoo -- right through you. This is no 00:34:46.05\00:34:53.86 namby-pamby stuff. Come on. Nobody's right. Nobody's wrong. We simply have to get along. 00:34:53.86\00:34:59.23 So here's a question for your academy, where you're from, and for my academy, where 00:34:59.23\00:35:03.70 I'm from, and for my university, where I'm from. How long shall 00:35:03.70\00:35:08.80 we lower the moral bar? All right. How long should we -- 00:35:08.80\00:35:13.88 How far shall we lower the moral bar? Hmm. How much are you 00:35:13.88\00:35:20.65 willing to compromise in your friendships? Talking with a student this last week. 00:35:20.65\00:35:27.16 And she said, "I was really embarrassed." I said, "What are 00:35:27.16\00:35:31.23 you embarrassed about?" She said, "I went on a date." "Yeah? Well, there's nothing 00:35:31.23\00:35:35.16 embarrassing about that." Yeah, and the guy said, "Hey, can we 00:35:35.16\00:35:39.43 end with a, you know, just a little?" And she said, "I looked at him and said, 'Not on your 00:35:39.43\00:35:45.51 life.'" And he says, "What's the matter with you?" You know what? 00:35:45.51\00:35:50.65 That's -- That's where this comes in. What she was facing 00:35:50.65\00:36:02.06 is... Whoa. Whoa. This is a wonderful date. This is perfect. She comes to the end. 00:36:02.06\00:36:08.30 And so far, so good. It's tight. But she's faced with a choice 00:36:08.30\00:36:13.70 now. I'm going to loosen the poundage on this bowstring. 00:36:13.70\00:36:19.71 I want to let it just get floppy and flaccid and flabby. 00:36:19.71\00:36:24.58 I just let it ehh just for a few moments, then I'll get back to 00:36:24.58\00:36:30.59 chhckt, ooh! This isn't just about campuses. This isn't just 00:36:30.59\00:36:34.86 about institutions. This is about you and me. Because we all 00:36:34.86\00:36:40.20 hold the bow in our hands, and the bowstring's tautness -- T-A-U-T -- the bowstring's 00:36:40.20\00:36:47.57 tension is up to us. We have the option, actually, to do détente. 00:36:47.57\00:36:52.54 Détente is when you say, "Hey, 80 pounds, forget it. Ooh, 00:36:52.54\00:36:57.55 floppy, floppy. That's about what I need." You got to be kidding me. Can you imagine a 00:36:57.55\00:37:03.49 war with floppy and you got the enemy coming straight at you, and he has 300 feet per second 00:37:03.49\00:37:09.06 on his -- pshoo! And you're pulling this thing and there is 00:37:09.06\00:37:13.70 nothing to it. We're dead meat. We have to keep it taut. Oh, 00:37:13.70\00:37:21.57 come on, guys. Détente? Turns out, this loosening of the bowstring is actually 00:37:21.57\00:37:27.14 achieved by compromise. That's it. It's the word compromise. 00:37:27.14\00:37:32.95 For our mortal enemy, that's the only way he wins. "Come on, 00:37:32.95\00:37:37.72 Dwight, come on. Loosen up, boy. Come on. It's just a party. This 00:37:37.72\00:37:42.32 is just tonight. It'll be over. Come with us, chicken. Loosen 00:37:42.32\00:37:49.80 the bow." I'm not loosening the bow. Yeah. In fact, you'd be 00:37:49.80\00:37:55.50 surprised. The word détente is not found in scripture. Neither is the word compromise. 00:37:55.50\00:37:59.07 Oh, there's one close to it. Oh, what was that word? Laodicean. 00:37:59.07\00:38:03.21 What's Laodicean? I'm half hot and half cold. That's compromise. Apparently the 00:38:03.21\00:38:07.75 church, the culture at the very end of the human history is Laodicean -- compromise. 00:38:07.75\00:38:13.92 One foot in, one foot out. Flabby. The enemy's bearing down 00:38:13.92\00:38:19.86 on you. You aim and there is nothing left. You let the line 00:38:19.86\00:38:26.94 down. You loosened it up. Wrong move, girl. Wrong time. Keep it 00:38:26.94\00:38:35.28 taut. Keep it taut. You have nothing to apologize, guys. 00:38:35.28\00:38:40.18 Man, oh, man, singing the way you sing, you have nothing to 00:38:40.18\00:38:45.22 apologize. You got steel in that spine of yours. And I love it. 00:38:45.22\00:38:50.29 God loves it. No compromise, no détente. Nope. We have one strategy. Fight the good fight 00:38:50.29\00:38:55.63 of faith. That's it. Fight the good fight of faith. Non-engagement, not into it. 00:38:55.63\00:39:03.10 Détente? [ Scoffs ] Not into it. Compromise, nope. 00:39:03.10\00:39:09.91 Here I stand. I'm standing and I'm not moving. It's the only 00:39:09.91\00:39:15.28 way you're going to win. Paul writes to this young Timothy. 00:39:15.28\00:39:18.35 Fight, agonize the good agony. Of course it'll cost you 00:39:18.35\00:39:24.26 something. Think it's going to be easy? You signed up for this. I didn't sign you up. 00:39:24.26\00:39:30.40 Once you sign up, you're in, girl. Boy, once you sign up, 00:39:30.40\00:39:34.90 you're in. No backing out. Oh, you can back out, 00:39:34.90\00:39:38.31 but who would? You're on a winning team already. 00:39:38.31\00:39:41.31 Can you imagine quitting a winning team, you basketball 00:39:41.31\00:39:46.15 jocks? "I want to join a losing team. I hate playing with winners." Are you crazy? 00:39:46.15\00:39:50.92 Why would you join a losing team when you're on the winning team? 00:39:50.92\00:39:57.26 Come on. Jesus is right. No woman, no man can serve two 00:39:57.26\00:40:01.00 masters. You love the one, hate the other, hate the one, love 00:40:01.00\00:40:03.57 the other. You cannot serve God and Satan. Impossible. Yeah. So, 00:40:03.57\00:40:10.61 hey, listen, there's been a lot of talk lately about revival. Have you heard about it on your 00:40:10.61\00:40:13.68 campuses? Everybody's heard about it in America, I'm sure. 00:40:13.68\00:40:16.48 A lot of talk about revival these days, ever since the news started reporting it. 00:40:16.48\00:40:20.72 In fact, we talked about revival last Sabbath. Yep. And since 00:40:20.72\00:40:25.15 then, I have received e-mails and phone conversations and the like. And what is becoming clear 00:40:25.15\00:40:29.96 to me -- listen up to this. What's becoming clear to me is 00:40:29.96\00:40:35.26 that there is some confusion over the meaning or definition of revival. What are you talking 00:40:35.26\00:40:41.44 about, Dwight? Well, some people are combing their personal 00:40:41.44\00:40:44.94 recollection or collective history recollection, and they're describing evidences 00:40:44.94\00:40:48.78 of what's happened in the past. So we ought to be thankful. We've got it in the past. 00:40:48.78\00:40:53.38 Hey, listen, listen, listen. I receive every one of those with 00:40:53.38\00:40:59.29 great joy. Thank you for telling me about that. It happened once. 00:40:59.29\00:41:03.79 But here's the deal. The kind of revival I'm referring to 00:41:03.79\00:41:09.33 and many people are longing for, the kind of revival we need here 00:41:09.33\00:41:14.70 at Pioneer, the kind of revival we need here at Andrews University, is a revival that 00:41:14.70\00:41:20.34 leads to reformation. Réformation. It's not just a 00:41:20.34\00:41:27.15 flash in the pan. "Hey, we had a revival. Good. What's next?" 00:41:27.15\00:41:30.35 No. The only revival now that's left on the agenda is 00:41:30.35\00:41:36.56 a revival that leads to reformation. It doesn't matter 00:41:36.56\00:41:40.90 to me what's happening on another campus right now. That is immaterial to me. 00:41:40.90\00:41:44.60 What we need here is a revival that sparks reformation. And by 00:41:44.60\00:41:50.64 that, I mean a revival that leads to changed hearts, transformed lives. And I'm 00:41:50.64\00:41:55.14 talking about my heart and my life and I'm talking about yours, as well. That's what we 00:41:55.14\00:41:59.58 need, a change in our thinking around here. A change in our behaving. Hey, listen, 00:41:59.58\00:42:03.15 Paul's on death row. We looked at this line last week. 00:42:03.15\00:42:05.55 Paul's on death row, and he has a bitter pain. Talking about 00:42:05.55\00:42:08.99 agony. One of his closest associates has deserted him. I'm talking about the fourth 00:42:08.99\00:42:12.86 option in war, which is to run, baby, run. That's what happened 00:42:12.86\00:42:16.56 to Paul. Let me put the line back on the screen. "Demas has 00:42:16.56\00:42:20.67 deserted me." Paul is on death row. "Demas has deserted me because he loved this world." 00:42:20.67\00:42:27.58 You can't believe it. You run because you love the world? 00:42:27.58\00:42:31.05 He did and has broken my heart. And by the way, it's that love 00:42:31.05\00:42:36.35 of the world that's killing us around here. It's killing us on your campus. Whatever campus 00:42:36.35\00:42:41.79 you're from. It's that love of the world. "What are you talking 00:42:41.79\00:42:44.79 about, Dwight?" Well, I'm talking about a reformation that means we abandon the love of the 00:42:44.79\00:42:50.23 world, we abandon this détente, this compromise with a fallen 00:42:50.23\00:42:53.84 culture. There is a change in our lifestyles. There is a change in our sexual 00:42:53.84\00:42:58.24 lifestyles. That's what I'm talking about. A change in the 00:42:58.24\00:43:03.88 way we do business around here. A change in the way we treat one another around here. 00:43:03.88\00:43:11.75 My heart breaks when I get an e-mail that's gone to 500 other 00:43:11.75\00:43:18.63 people. Some people feel that that's their solution. Just keep forwarding e-mails. 00:43:18.63\00:43:23.53 Blanking them. My heart breaks. Is that Jesus' way? 00:43:23.53\00:43:30.81 You really think we've tightened the bowstring here? Or have we 00:43:30.81\00:43:35.98 loosened it so it doesn't matter how I get my word out as long as 00:43:35.98\00:43:41.45 my word gets out. You got to be kidding me. No, a revival, a change in the way we do 00:43:41.45\00:43:49.26 business, a change in the way we treat each other. That's the revival and reformation I need. 00:43:49.26\00:43:52.89 That's the reformation and transformation we need, all of 00:43:52.89\00:43:56.67 us, all seven of your campuses plus ours. A transformation that means becoming more 00:43:56.67\00:44:05.14 and more like Jesus. Like his strong love for people. Jesus 00:44:05.14\00:44:11.31 loved people. He always was standing up, by the way, for the 00:44:11.31\00:44:15.22 disenfranchised, marginalized, the and the alienated. That's being like Jesus. Jesus stood up 00:44:15.22\00:44:21.79 for holiness. You stand up for holiness? You say, "Hey, you know, hey, come on, boy. 00:44:21.79\00:44:24.89 My string is taut." Nope. That's being like Jesus. 00:44:24.89\00:44:30.47 Jesus' devotion to his father. Getting along with him. Abba, 00:44:30.47\00:44:35.84 Father. That's what it means to be like Jesus. "Be like Jesus, 00:44:35.84\00:44:41.24 this my song, in the home and in the throng. Be like Jesus all day long. I would be like 00:44:41.24\00:44:48.02 Jesus." That's the revival that leads to reformation. To be like 00:44:48.02\00:44:53.96 Jesus. Because, you see, it always keeps coming back to Jesus. I've got to show you this 00:44:53.96\00:44:57.13 before I sit down. It always comes back to Jesus. You see, 00:44:57.13\00:44:59.73 I left off part of this. That line we've been looking at is "fight the good fight." 00:44:59.73\00:45:04.07 But there's actually more to it. "Of the faith." And that's from 00:45:04.07\00:45:09.30 the NIV. Translates the article here to make sure that we see it. "Fight the good fight of 00:45:09.30\00:45:13.61 the faith." Of the faith of what? Of the faith of whom? 00:45:13.61\00:45:17.35 Whose faith are you talking about? If you're a generation at 00:45:17.35\00:45:20.58 the end of time, I'll tell you whose faith we're talking about. The Book of Revelation 00:45:20.58\00:45:24.35 is absolutely clear. People livin', teens livin' at the end 00:45:24.35\00:45:27.86 of time, you'll identify them right here. Here we go. 00:45:27.86\00:45:31.03 Revelation 14:12. This is from the David Bentley Hart rendition, or translation, 00:45:31.03\00:45:35.26 of the New Testament. 00:45:35.26\00:45:36.90 They keep the faith of Jesus. Fight the good fight of faith. 00:45:45.61\00:45:50.91 Of the faith. Whose faith? The faith of Jesus. Come on. It's 00:45:50.91\00:45:54.68 all about Jesus, I'm telling you. You want revival and reformation around here? 00:45:54.68\00:45:57.82 Me, too. Then it comes back to all about Jesus. That's it. 00:45:57.82\00:46:04.26 It's all about Jesus. You won't get a revival without Jesus. 00:46:04.26\00:46:11.40 Oh, that little classic "Steps to Christ." I got to share this 00:46:11.40\00:46:15.67 with you. I gave this to a friend of mine. We had lunch a week and a half ago. 00:46:15.67\00:46:19.91 He's a minister, a pastor, been here for 15 years. For 10 years, 00:46:19.91\00:46:25.91 he's been watching every week right here. Another denomination. "Steps to Christ." 00:46:25.91\00:46:31.55 I gave him a copy of this. Look at this. "Steps to Christ." 00:46:31.55\00:46:35.26 Why? Because it's the faith of Jesus. That's how you win. 00:46:45.90\00:46:49.14 The faith of Jesus. That's your weapon right there. 00:46:49.14\00:46:52.27 I'm telling you, that's revival that leads to reformation. When 00:46:59.88\00:47:04.25 Christ is first and last and always, you got the seeds of a revolution. A revival that turns 00:47:04.25\00:47:12.63 into a reformation that turns into a revolution. And you're 00:47:12.63\00:47:16.93 the generation. I'm looking at you. Teens. You're what we need. Don't you let anybody sell you 00:47:16.93\00:47:24.11 short. We have to have you. And we have to have you 00:47:24.11\00:47:27.34 sold out. We can't have you with your bowstring just slackened 00:47:27.34\00:47:31.88 and when you come here. No, no, no. We need you with the 00:47:31.88\00:47:35.82 bowstring taut. 00:47:35.82\00:47:37.22 Tight, tension, steel in your spine. 00:47:37.25\00:47:41.49 That's who we need. If you're not going to be 00:47:41.49\00:47:43.76 that way, find another school. We need you sold out. 00:47:43.76\00:47:50.73 And you are it. When I heard you singing, 00:47:50.73\00:47:53.40 man, I just said, "Jesus, what a platform full of teens. 00:47:53.40\00:47:59.84 Can you believe it? Handpicked by God himself." 00:47:59.84\00:48:05.15 You're it. I'm proud of you. 00:48:05.15\00:48:08.68 I can tell just by looking into your face. I'm proud of you. 00:48:08.72\00:48:13.15 And the best is yet to come. Don't you ever back down. Keep 00:48:13.15\00:48:18.23 it taut. The best is yet to come. Yeah. Fight the good fight of the faith of Jesus. 00:48:18.23\00:48:24.23 Agonize the good agony. Of the agony and faith of Jesus. One thing I know, revival 00:48:24.23\00:48:31.61 and reformation around here will have Jesus' fingerprints and 00:48:31.61\00:48:35.84 Jesus' blood drops all over it. I end now with one other place the word agony appears. 00:48:35.84\00:48:40.72 And I want you to open your Bible, I'm not putting it on the 00:48:40.72\00:48:43.32 screen. Open your Bible to Luke chapter 23. Pull your little 00:48:43.32\00:48:46.96 phone out. You got it. And turn to Luke 22, Luke 22. I'm going to read this story, 00:48:46.96\00:48:51.93 and then I'll sit down. Luke 22. It's Thursday night late. 00:48:51.93\00:48:57.30 The upper room is behind. The Last Supper is now finis. And pick it up in verse 39. 00:48:57.30\00:49:03.54 "And Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives." He's going 00:49:03.54\00:49:07.18 to the Gethsemane, his favorite nighttime prayer spot. "He went 00:49:07.18\00:49:10.61 out, as usual, to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. And on reaching 00:49:10.61\00:49:13.95 the place, He said to them, 'Pray.'" By the way, you want revival and reformation and 00:49:13.95\00:49:18.52 revolution? Three Rs? Pray. There's no way around it. Of course it's through Jesus. 00:49:18.52\00:49:22.49 But pray, He's telling his closest companions, "'Pray that 00:49:22.49\00:49:26.66 you will not fall into temptation.'" Keep that bowstring taut. Don't loosen 00:49:26.66\00:49:32.57 your bowstring. The enemy has his sights on you. He'll kill 00:49:32.57\00:49:37.21 you tonight. "'Pray that you will not fall into temptation.' Jesus withdrew about 00:49:40.48\00:49:44.31 a stone's throw beyond them. He knelt down and He prayed." Red letters in my Bible. 00:49:44.31\00:49:48.32 "'Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me, yet not 00:49:48.32\00:49:53.02 my will, but Yours be done.'" And pshoo! Just like that, "an 00:49:53.02\00:49:58.56 angel from Heaven," verse 43, "appeared to Him and strengthened Him." What's going 00:49:58.56\00:50:05.90 on here? I will put the last verse on the screen because I need you to see where the Greek 00:50:05.90\00:50:10.21 word is. Here it is, final verse 44. "And being in anguish" -- here's the Greek word, agonia. 00:50:10.21\00:50:17.85 Agonize the good agony. Jesus does it first himself. You're not treading a pathway 00:50:17.85\00:50:24.35 that Jesus has not already walked ahead of you. "And being in anguish, [agonia], 00:50:24.35\00:50:28.76 He prayed more earnestly" -- intensely -- "and His sweat was like drops of blood 00:50:28.76\00:50:34.23 falling to the ground." There it is. You just read it. The basis, 00:50:34.23\00:50:40.40 the bedrock for revival and reformation around here and on the campus where you live. 00:50:40.40\00:50:47.58 The blood of Jesus and the sacrifice of Jesus. That's what 00:50:47.58\00:50:55.98 ignites what we're desperately praying for. And you're it. Keep that bowstring taut. 00:50:55.98\00:51:03.29 Don't you go home with it all flabby and flaccid. No. 00:51:03.29\00:51:10.63 And the best is yet to come for your campus and for mine, as 00:51:10.63\00:51:16.27 well. There's one prayer to pray. I'll put it on the screen. Just memorize this prayer. 00:51:16.27\00:51:21.88 Memorize this prayer. "Jesus" -- I pray this prayer all the time 00:51:21.88\00:51:25.71 in my dark little prayer room. 00:51:25.71\00:51:28.15 Have mercy on my campus. Have mercy on my teachers. Have mercy 00:51:42.23\00:51:48.90 on my peers. Have mercy on my administrators. "Jesus, Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of 00:51:48.90\00:51:53.54 the world, have mercy on me." You just keep repeating it. 00:51:53.54\00:51:58.55 You'll get it. You just keep repeating it. "Jesus, Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of 00:51:58.55\00:52:06.82 the world, have mercy on us." Let's pray. Oh, God, Lord 00:52:06.82\00:52:15.06 Jesus... we don't want -- we don't want slacked bowstrings. 00:52:15.06\00:52:22.17 No. We want it to be taut. Tense. In your hands, all that 00:52:22.17\00:52:34.08 you need to let your arrow take the enemy out. That's all we 00:52:34.08\00:52:41.32 ask. Jesus, Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, have mercy on us here 00:52:41.32\00:52:46.73 and there and everywhere. Have mercy on us. And we will praise 00:52:46.73\00:52:53.17 you. Yes, we will. As the choir just sang, we will praise you in 00:52:53.17\00:53:00.34 that place. Our enemies are no more. And peace and love in the Lord for ever and ever. 00:53:00.34\00:53:09.82 Amen. They're gonna sing a beautiful song. 00:53:09.82\00:53:13.86 Grab the hymnal in front of you. It's number 336. Just three 00:53:13.86\00:53:18.13 stanzas. One, two, and four. It's a beautiful, beautiful 00:53:18.13\00:53:21.26 song. We're going to stand. In fact, stand right now to get 00:53:21.26\00:53:24.33 ready to sing it. Stand right now.
