We are here today 00:05:16.41\00:05:19.41 because we serve a God who, after three days, 00:05:19.41\00:05:23.05 He rose again. 00:05:23.05\00:05:24.65 He rose again. And we serve our recent Saviour. So as we sing 00:05:24.69\00:05:29.52 this song, it may not be too familiar to you, but just meditate on the lyrics and 00:05:29.52\00:05:36.53 realize the wonderful and powerful recent savior that died for us, that we're serving and 00:05:36.53\00:05:44.14 singing to today. >> Amen, amen, glory to our God. 00:10:59.02\00:11:02.22 >> Father, that's what we're saying. Hide the 00:11:16.24\00:11:21.64 distractions. Hush the clamorings of our minds. Speak to us in Jesus' name. 00:11:21.64\00:11:29.68 Amen. 00:11:29.68\00:11:31.15 Can you imagine what it would be like -- I'm serious -- if the 00:11:31.75\00:11:37.23 police, little Berrien Springs, Oronoko Township. 00:11:37.23\00:11:42.00 I know the police. I have a policeman five doors 00:11:42.00\00:11:45.27 down from where I live. But if the police showed up 00:11:45.27\00:11:49.14 and I'm talking about in their squad cars. 00:11:49.14\00:11:53.71 Red and blue, flashing, flashing, flashing, they show up 00:11:53.71\00:11:57.01 at every entrance into this tiny little village township. 00:11:57.01\00:12:04.62 And they jump out of their squad cars. There's an officer there 00:12:04.65\00:12:09.19 halting all traffic, all traffic arriving to our little Berrien 00:12:09.19\00:12:15.23 Springs village. One question. Do you live on the campus of 00:12:15.23\00:12:19.53 Andrews? Do you live in the village? The answer is yes, you may go. If the answer's no, 00:12:19.53\00:12:23.64 come again some other day. That happened this Sunday in a little 00:12:23.64\00:12:30.01 town in Kentucky called Wilmore. You may have heard about it. Population -- 6,461. 00:12:30.01\00:12:39.02 Small town. Small Christian university in that town named 00:12:39.02\00:12:44.36 Asbury University, on whose campus something rather unusual happened when they were having 00:12:44.36\00:12:52.53 worship at chapel a few Wednesdays ago. And that is the 00:12:52.53\00:12:57.94 worship didn't stop. They had no big gun preacher. No visiting 00:12:57.94\00:13:04.65 choir. It was just the students. 00:13:04.65\00:13:07.12 And the worship kept going. The services ended, but they stayed in the Hughes Auditorium. 00:13:08.68\00:13:15.09 And then the singing started, and then the praising started, and then the testimonies began, 00:13:16.66\00:13:21.53 and then the confessions, and then the repentance. And then -- 00:13:21.53\00:13:27.04 this is students lead now. Then students start coming forward to 00:13:27.04\00:13:31.94 the front, and all that day, all that day, chapel kept going. By the way, they're required to 00:13:31.94\00:13:37.65 go to three chapels every week. 00:13:37.65\00:13:39.48 It'd take a while, but you'd get it. [ Laughter ] 00:13:44.39\00:13:47.26 You'd get it. 00:13:47.26\00:13:49.19 All that day, into the night. Now word is spread across 00:13:49.92\00:13:55.33 campus. Kids are coming back to church. 00:13:55.33\00:13:58.33 All that next -- all that night. The next day, you got it. The next night, all that week. 00:13:59.27\00:14:05.94 The rest of that week. All the next week that came. Four days 00:14:05.94\00:14:11.21 into the following week. 16 days and nights, 24/7. That place is 00:14:11.21\00:14:18.65 packed now. Doing the kind of worship we're doing right here. 00:14:18.65\00:14:24.06 Led by students. Unbelievable. 20,000 people this Sunday showed 00:14:24.06\00:14:29.26 up, and that's why the town said, "Adios, we cannot handle this." The president of Asbury 00:14:29.26\00:14:36.04 University, Kevin Brown, released a statement. They put it on their website, 00:14:36.04\00:14:41.08 Asbury University. Only they opened a new page, and they called the new page 00:14:41.08\00:14:45.78 "Outpouring." Here are the president's words in that 00:14:45.78\00:14:51.02 statement. All right. Put it on the screen for you. Kevin Brown 00:14:51.02\00:14:59.06 -- "On February 8, 2023. Asbury University's regularly scheduled 00:14:59.06\00:15:05.03 chapel service never ended. What we have experienced since that Wednesday morning has been 00:15:05.03\00:15:11.04 a current of immeasurable goodness, flooding our community and quickly moving into other 00:15:11.04\00:15:16.98 regions of the world. Words fail any effort to communicate the 00:15:16.98\00:15:21.72 abundance of experiences and stories that will leave us 00:15:21.72\00:15:26.96 forever changed. Thursday, February 23." Two days ago. "Will mark the end of this 00:15:26.96\00:15:32.06 historic multi-week gathering at Asbury University with a National Collegiate Day of 00:15:32.06\00:15:38.17 Prayer broadcast hosted on our campus." We celebrated that this 00:15:38.17\00:15:43.91 Thursday ourselves here at Andrews. "I find it fitting that what started with college 00:15:43.91\00:15:49.04 students on our campus is ending with college students joined in 00:15:49.04\00:15:54.15 prayer and worship across the country." Wow. 00:15:54.15\00:15:57.59 Somebody asked him why he was bringing the revival to a halt. He responded -- I like his 00:16:00.99\00:16:07.30 words -- "How can you shut down something you didn't start?" 00:16:07.30\00:16:14.04 Isn't that good? We have a couple of PhD students down there. Their families or friends 00:16:14.04\00:16:17.51 are here in town. I've read both of their eyewitness reports 00:16:17.51\00:16:24.48 because they stepped into that huge auditorium, experienced it, And then I'm going to read 00:16:24.48\00:16:28.92 the last paragraph of of one of these here. "The language of 00:16:28.92\00:16:33.72 revival has been used a lot to describe what's going on. Personally, I would probably 00:16:33.72\00:16:39.69 hold off using that type of language." The president didn't 00:16:39.69\00:16:43.47 use the word once. "I would hold off using that type of language 00:16:43.47\00:16:47.27 because we just don't know what the fruits of this are going to be. Is it going to effect long 00:16:47.27\00:16:52.07 term change? Repentance, you know, people turning back to the 00:16:52.07\00:16:55.74 Bible. Are people going to go back to their communities and continue to take Jesus with 00:16:55.74\00:17:00.25 them? Only time will tell. But if you just ask me what I'm seeing there right now, 00:17:00.25\00:17:05.45 I see thousands of people who are wanting a deeper experience 00:17:05.45\00:17:10.99 with God. Thousands of people from all different kinds of backgrounds and ethnicities 00:17:10.99\00:17:14.83 and denominations and ages coming together to worship and 00:17:14.83\00:17:18.87 pray. At the very least, I'd say it shows just how much people are in search of something 00:17:18.87\00:17:25.11 more." 00:17:25.11\00:17:26.71 I thought that was pretty wise. Wow. So here we are in another 00:17:27.94\00:17:35.05 little town about 500 miles to the north, in another little Christian university. 00:17:35.05\00:17:41.16 Could it happen here? Let me give you a little bit of 00:17:41.16\00:17:46.33 history. The first as Asbury Revival, historic, noted in the reference books, took place in 00:17:46.33\00:17:54.40 1970 in that same auditorium, same campus. The date it began 00:17:54.40\00:17:58.57 -- February 3, 1970. That fall -- now listen to this -- that 00:17:58.57\00:18:04.88 fall, eight months later, October 1970, a similar revival broke out on the campus of 00:18:04.88\00:18:14.79 Andrews University. In chapel, in this church on that morning. The leadership of this 00:18:14.79\00:18:21.10 faith community were gathered in Takoma Park at something they used to call Autumn Council 00:18:21.10\00:18:26.67 of the General Conference. They interrupted the meeting. Listen 00:18:26.67\00:18:30.57 to this. They interrupted the meeting. "We just received a phone call from Andrews 00:18:30.57\00:18:35.91 University. The chapel has not let out. Students are lined up 00:18:35.91\00:18:40.95 at a microphone to share their testimonies. That now is 00:18:40.95\00:18:47.92 history. The rest is history, of a revival that started on this campus, in this very place, 00:18:48.66\00:18:54.20 and spread to all the Adventist colleges in North America. I'm a 00:18:54.20\00:18:59.23 little freshman or sophomore down in Southern. Everybody 00:18:59.23\00:19:04.14 heard about it. Wow. Could it happen again? You know, I did the arithmetic. It's 53 years 00:19:06.54\00:19:13.05 later from the Asbury 1970 revival. It's the same for us. It started in Asbury 00:19:13.05\00:19:19.99 and went to Andrews. I suppose it could start in Asbury again 00:19:19.99\00:19:23.86 and come to Andrews. Who am I to say? I was brooding over all of 00:19:23.86\00:19:29.53 this this week, and it suddenly hit me, all those tweeted video clips coming out of the packed 00:19:29.53\00:19:34.47 Hughes Auditorium. You know what? Those students, every one 00:19:34.47\00:19:38.97 of them was a Gen Z'er. Telling you the truth. Gen Z, 18 to 25, 00:19:38.97\00:19:44.38 maybe up to 30, if you wish. Every one of them. And I'm thinking to myself, 00:19:44.38\00:19:49.98 "That's what we got on this campus." They're all Gen Z'ers. 00:19:49.98\00:19:53.42 Undergrad, graduate, seminary. They're all Gen Z'ers in the 00:19:53.42\00:19:58.93 seminary. Man. You can't tell me this generation isn't open to an 00:19:58.93\00:20:03.73 outpouring of the love of God. I'm so blessed to have young 00:20:03.73\00:20:10.97 friends, the teens at Andrews Academy. The 20-somethings here at Andrews University. 00:20:10.97\00:20:17.25 Wow. Now I know, I know the moment a revival breaks out 00:20:17.25\00:20:22.95 among the young, there are going to always be people who step forward and challenge the 00:20:22.95\00:20:26.99 authenticity of what has just happened. I understand that. 00:20:26.99\00:20:30.29 Jesus understands that. That's exactly what happened to him. 00:20:30.29\00:20:34.46 One day, the Pharisees, those grumpy old religionists, came saddling up to Jesus, 00:20:34.46\00:20:42.30 as he's riding on the back of a donkey. The crowd is gone wild. 00:20:42.30\00:20:47.04 They are jumping and hollering. Their hands are in the air. They're waving palm branches, 00:20:47.04\00:20:52.81 they're praise shouting, they're praise singing "Hosanna! 00:20:52.81\00:20:58.49 Hosanna! Hosanna!" And the grumpy religionists race up to Jesus and say, "Yo, you got a 00:20:58.49\00:21:03.39 problem on your hands here. We got some false revival going 00:21:03.39\00:21:08.36 on." Here it is. The account in Luke, 19:3. "Some of the 00:21:08.36\00:21:13.37 Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, 'Teacher, rebuke your disciples.'" And Jesus said to 00:21:13.37\00:21:20.01 them, "'I tell you, if they keep quiet, the stones will shout 00:21:20.01\00:21:28.12 out." Come on. This must be a counterfeit revival. 00:21:28.12\00:21:32.69 I mean, people shouldn't be this happy about Jesus. Are you serious? You mean that? 00:21:32.69\00:21:40.66 No, you can't. And by the way, when Jesus and his entourage 00:21:40.66\00:21:46.77 finally make their way down, and sometime later, they end up in the temple, the same grumpy 00:21:46.77\00:21:52.27 religionists show back up. They always show up when they're not 00:21:52.27\00:21:57.91 wanted. Matthew, 21 now. "But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw 00:21:57.91\00:22:01.78 the wonderful things Jesus did, and the children this time are shouting in the temple courts, 00:22:01.78\00:22:07.72 'Hosanna to the Son of David,' they were indignant. 'Do you hear what these children 00:22:07.72\00:22:13.76 are saying?' they asked Jesus. 'Yes, I hear what the children are saying,' Jesus replied. 00:22:13.76\00:22:19.83 Have you never read from the lips of children?'" He's quoting 00:22:19.83\00:22:24.77 Psalm 8 here. "'From the lips of children and infants, You, O Lord, have called forth your 00:22:24.77\00:22:31.55 praise.'" Because what you naysayers don't realize is this 00:22:31.55\00:22:36.35 is the real deal. My, oh, my. Fact of the matter is, if God is ever going to renew, 00:22:38.39\00:22:44.93 if God is ever going to revive, if God is ever going to raise up, if God is ever going to 00:22:44.93\00:22:49.36 resurrect the church that you and I belong to, it's going to take this generation. 00:22:49.36\00:22:56.27 You Gen Z'ers have been kind of dissed on enough that you're sort of callous to the thought. 00:22:56.27\00:23:03.61 But it's going to take your generation. Andrews Academy, 00:23:03.61\00:23:09.38 your generation, Andrews University. Your generation. Where God will get the most 00:23:09.38\00:23:14.89 traction, the highest momentum for a strategic move. That's 00:23:14.89\00:23:19.39 why, by the way, college campuses are the Holy Spirit's favorite place to begin a 00:23:19.39\00:23:23.87 revival. A little German village named Wittenberg, university campus, a revival breaks out, 00:23:23.87\00:23:29.47 and it becomes the mighty Protestant Reformation. A little college campus called 00:23:29.47\00:23:33.61 Oxford University. And a few youngsters get together, and 00:23:33.61\00:23:38.78 they become the front edge of the greatest revival to sweep 00:23:38.78\00:23:43.72 the British Isles. The Holy Spirit loves the young. And he loves college campuses. So don't 00:23:43.72\00:23:52.36 let anybody diss you for being here at Andrews University. This is ripe and fertile field 00:23:52.36\00:23:58.40 for the Holy Spirit. He loves it, and he loves you. You got a 00:23:58.40\00:24:06.51 big friend in the Holy Spirit. Listen to me. I'm telling you. As I say, Gen Z'ers maybe the 00:24:06.51\00:24:12.51 rescue generation of God's final mobilization. Two Mondays ago, 00:24:12.51\00:24:17.75 I'm here in my office, it's Monday morning. Five undergrads are sitting in my office. 00:24:17.75\00:24:23.39 Multi-disciplined kids. Computer engineering, I think. I know 00:24:23.39\00:24:28.36 aviation. I know theology. Whatever else. They wanted me to 00:24:28.36\00:24:33.07 read a paper they wrote. Three pages long. A carefully thought 00:24:33.07\00:24:39.47 through well-articulated, impassioned appeal to whoever reads it. It begins with these 00:24:39.47\00:24:48.15 words. "We are deeply concerned with the declining spiritual condition of the students 00:24:48.15\00:24:52.09 at Andrews University." 00:24:52.09\00:24:53.69 I hesitate to even speak those words because I have spent my 00:25:01.20\00:25:06.74 life pretty much here. And I love this university. And they 00:25:06.74\00:25:14.38 do, too. I only speak them because I know that if I went to every other campus and said, 00:25:14.38\00:25:18.71 "Give me five students who feel this way, there'd be legions." This isn't the only place 00:25:18.71\00:25:25.02 where a sentence like this could be written. 00:25:25.02\00:25:27.52 For an hour, I listened. I asked, pushed back. I listened. 00:25:31.23\00:25:36.53 Came down to have prayer, so we all know knelt down and prayed 00:25:39.73\00:25:42.67 around the circle together. That afternoon, I invited the pastors, Lead Chaplain José, 00:25:42.67\00:25:49.24 and his team. We sat around a boardroom table downstairs, and 00:25:49.24\00:25:55.48 we read through this paper, three pages out loud together. Chaplain José subsequently 00:25:55.48\00:26:02.36 met with this group. Again, again. 00:26:02.36\00:26:06.16 The next day, as it turned out, is a Tuesday, I happened to be speaking at the Religion 00:26:08.96\00:26:14.30 Theology Department undergrad worship service for all disciplines, so they're all 00:26:14.30\00:26:19.04 Gen Z'ers there. Had an altar call at the end of my short 00:26:19.04\00:26:25.68 little talk, and Gen Z'ers, in front of their peers, come walking down in Nethery Hall -- 00:26:25.68\00:26:31.12 Not in Nethery. New Bold, New Bold. They're coming down the 00:26:31.12\00:26:35.02 stairs, in front of their peers, coming to Christ. Don't tell me 00:26:35.02\00:26:41.43 that this Generation Z, this Gen Z generation, is not ready to be mobilized and enlisted 00:26:41.43\00:26:48.47 for the Lord Jesus Christ. I believe it. Two Sabbaths in a 00:26:48.47\00:26:54.84 row, by the way, do I need to remind you, this winter, we've had a Gen Z'er standing right 00:26:54.84\00:27:01.15 here behind this humble little pulpit, preaching her heart out. 00:27:01.15\00:27:05.99 I'm talking about Marian Gonzales. She's a religious V.P. communications major. 00:27:05.99\00:27:10.23 I listened to her preach her heart out on behalf of the 00:27:10.23\00:27:14.20 Gospel. The very next Sabbath, junior psychology, pre-med major Nick Bishop, SM, preaching 00:27:14.20\00:27:21.50 his heart out. I was so proud of both of them. And then I don't 00:27:21.50\00:27:26.44 mind telling you that just last Sabbath, not even a Gen Z'er. Pre Gen Z, young man named 00:27:26.44\00:27:31.78 Heyman Lago played the part of Job on this platform like nothing I've ever seen before. 00:27:31.78\00:27:40.06 I'm telling you, there is a generation primed and ready to 00:27:40.06\00:27:46.80 be mobilized. We just need the ignition. We just need the fire. 00:27:46.80\00:27:50.93 I realize many of you, and I want to give a shout out to you 00:27:54.67\00:27:57.11 who teach at Andrews Academy and Andrews University. 00:27:57.11\00:28:00.54 Many of you are looked up to. You're looked up to by these Gen 00:28:00.58\00:28:04.31 Z'ers. They think you're the coolest thing around. 00:28:04.31\00:28:06.72 And I know that God is using you. 00:28:08.48\00:28:11.35 You're not by accident in that classroom. 00:28:11.35\00:28:14.69 God is using you. I believe the church's best 00:28:14.69\00:28:17.49 days -- I believe Andrews University's best days 00:28:17.49\00:28:20.33 are yet to come. God is on the throne. 00:28:20.33\00:28:25.47 We have nothing to fear. Gen Z'ers are going to be key players in the dramatic 00:28:25.50\00:28:31.41 chapter to come. So the question is, what do I do? 00:28:31.41\00:28:36.08 What do you do? What do we do? What next step shall we take? There are two responses. 00:28:36.08\00:28:41.32 Response number one. If you're young, you must engage this 00:28:41.32\00:28:47.76 battle. All right? If you're young, you must engage this 00:28:47.76\00:28:52.49 battle. The greatest battle of history is just roiling around 00:28:52.49\00:28:58.83 you as we speak. What's that mean? Engage this battle. I'll tell you what it doesn't 00:28:58.83\00:29:02.04 mean. I'm going to run three one liners by you right now. 00:29:02.04\00:29:05.51 You will not remember the verse. You won't remember where it's 00:29:05.51\00:29:08.48 found. You won't even remember all the words in the these three 00:29:08.48\00:29:11.81 one liners. But I've underlined in every one liner the words that need to get your attention. 00:29:11.81\00:29:15.82 By the time we read the third one, you say, "I get it, I get 00:29:15.82\00:29:19.02 it." Okay, let's go. One liner, number one. Who's ever read the 00:29:19.02\00:29:23.36 Book of Job. Job -- rather, Judges. Come on, Judges, 5:23 00:29:23.36\00:29:28.63 "Curse Meroz." You know what? Nobody knows today. No scholar knows, what is Meroz? 00:29:28.63\00:29:31.70 Is it a place? It is a person? Nobody knows. 00:29:31.70\00:29:34.70 This is Deborah, the prophet, is singing a song, and it ends up 00:29:34.70\00:29:39.01 there. "'Curse Meroz,' said the angel of the Lord. 'Curse its 00:29:39.01\00:29:43.35 people bitterly because they did not come to help the Lord, to help the Lord against the 00:29:43.35\00:29:49.02 mighty.'" What's going on here? Some sort of battle is raging 00:29:49.02\00:29:51.99 around them, but these in Meroz refuse to come to the help of 00:29:51.99\00:29:56.86 God's mission. They just sat there, did nothing. They were... 00:29:56.86\00:30:03.13 Do you know what a AWOL means? Come on, A-W-O-L, AWOL. No? 00:30:03.13\00:30:10.97 Well, I'll put on screen for you. There it is. 00:30:10.97\00:30:13.64 It's a military term, AWOL. What's it mean? Absent without 00:30:13.64\00:30:17.35 leave. Hey, who said -- boy, who said you could leave? Who said you could go to town? 00:30:17.35\00:30:21.62 You have no leave. Absent without leave. These guys in 00:30:21.62\00:30:27.29 Meroz were absent without leave. They should have shown up. They should have been there. 00:30:27.29\00:30:30.56 But they weren't. I'm talking to you who are young. 00:30:30.56\00:30:33.36 Don't you do that. Don't you go AWOL. You must engage the 00:30:33.36\00:30:38.07 battle. Okay, three one liners. Here comes number two. Psalm 00:30:38.07\00:30:42.44 78:9. Just like the last one. "The men of Ephraim." Nobody 00:30:42.44\00:30:46.17 knows what this is talking about. There is no historical evidence of this moment, 00:30:46.17\00:30:50.18 but we'll read it anyway. "The men of Ephraim, though armed 00:30:50.18\00:30:54.22 with bows." You know what that is, don't you? By the way, 00:30:54.22\00:30:59.59 Jonathan Alter -- rather, Robert Alter renders this line. "They 00:30:59.59\00:31:04.16 were deft wielders of the bows." They could hit with an air a dime at 100 meters. 00:31:04.16\00:31:10.27 So these guys are fully equipped to the teeth. They are able. 00:31:10.27\00:31:14.70 Okay, now we got that. "The men of Ephraim, though, armed with 00:31:14.70\00:31:21.04 bows, turned back on the day of battle." AWOL. They should have 00:31:21.04\00:31:25.71 been there. They could have been there. But when the heat got 00:31:25.71\00:31:30.72 really hot, adios. They're not there. What's going on here? 00:31:30.72\00:31:35.02 AWOL. I'm talking to you who are young. Don't go AWOL. 00:31:35.02\00:31:39.16 Engage the battle that rages all around you. Are there battles 00:31:39.16\00:31:45.77 going on? I was talking to a young coed this week, not a part of that other group I was with. 00:31:45.77\00:31:51.14 She says, "Oh, my, you have no idea. You have no idea." 00:31:51.14\00:31:58.01 I have an idea. We are in a battle. And you know what? 00:31:58.01\00:32:04.09 Because the Holy Spirit is so big on Gen Z'ers, guess what? And I must be candid here. 00:32:04.09\00:32:10.69 If the Holy Spirit is big on Gen Z'ers, there's somebody down on 00:32:10.69\00:32:16.53 them. Guess who? Guess who? Destroy 'em, kill 'em. They're 00:32:16.53\00:32:24.47 too effective. Crush the movement. Stop the generation. 00:32:24.47\00:32:29.78 Yeah, I get it. All right, there are three one liners. Here's the 00:32:29.78\00:32:34.12 last one. New Testament, 2 Timothy, 4: 9 and 10 Paul sitting on death row 00:32:34.12\00:32:38.85 in the Mamertine dungeon in Rome. He's writing to a young 00:32:38.85\00:32:41.79 associate of his, Timothy. "Do your best to come to me quickly, for Demas, because he 00:32:41.79\00:32:48.33 loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to 00:32:48.33\00:32:53.50 Thessalonica." Demas is another young, we gather, spiritual warrior, partner with Paul. 00:32:53.50\00:32:59.41 But when the heat gets hot, when the culture is strong and seeks 00:32:59.41\00:33:05.95 to suck you into its iron jaws, look out. 00:33:05.95\00:33:10.09 Demas, gone. The world just drew him away. Gotcha. 00:33:10.82\00:33:18.83 Don't go AWOL. Demas went AWOL. Don't you go AWOL. 00:33:22.23\00:33:25.57 Engage. If you are young, engage, engage the battle. 00:33:25.57\00:33:30.84 You were born for this. I'm telling you. You got to trust 00:33:30.84\00:33:34.81 me. You are the generation we have to have for this thing to 00:33:34.81\00:33:41.68 go viral. And it will go viral one day, if Revelation, 18:1 is correct, it will go viral. 00:33:41.68\00:33:46.92 And you've got to be a part of it. Don't go AWOL on God. 00:33:46.92\00:33:52.39 All right, response number one. Response number one. If you're 00:33:52.39\00:33:56.80 young, you must engage the battle. Response number two. If you're not so young, 00:33:56.80\00:34:00.84 you must engage the battle. They're fairly similar, both of 00:34:00.84\00:34:06.27 those. Because the point is, it doesn't matter your age at all. Young or not so young. 00:34:06.27\00:34:10.58 The issue is not about your age. The issue is about usage. Just put "us" in front of "age." 00:34:10.58\00:34:16.89 Usage. Are you using what has been handed to you on a silver 00:34:16.89\00:34:22.29 platter for the sake of the Kingdom of God? Are you using 00:34:22.29\00:34:25.73 it? Are you using it? What are you talking about, Dwight? 00:34:25.73\00:34:28.80 Well, let's go to Paul. The Saint Paul that lost his buddy, 00:34:28.80\00:34:33.67 young buddy Demas, who sucked into the culture and disappeared. Let's go to Paul. 00:34:33.67\00:34:38.17 He's chained to a Roman soldier right now, by the way. Yeah. 00:34:38.17\00:34:41.88 When he writes these words. Ephesians 6:12 and 13, then 00:34:41.88\00:34:45.68 verse 18. "For our struggle [battle] for our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but 00:34:45.68\00:34:51.42 against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against 00:34:51.42\00:34:56.79 the spiritual forces, the armies of evil in the heavenly realms." Everybody's playing for you. 00:34:56.79\00:35:04.40 Both sides are gunning for you. They need your allegiance. They 00:35:04.40\00:35:09.34 need your loyalty. You are a key to them, and they know it. You just don't know it. 00:35:09.34\00:35:13.17 That's the problem. You don't realize how critical you are at this time in history. 00:35:13.17\00:35:20.05 "Armies of evil in the heavenly realms." "Therefore," Paul 00:35:21.52\00:35:25.39 writes, "Put on the full armor of God." You know that armor of God. What is it? The helmet of 00:35:25.39\00:35:29.99 -- What is it? Helmet of salvation, breastplate of -- 00:35:29.99\00:35:34.10 what was that? Righteousness. Sword of the spirit. Okay, come 00:35:34.10\00:35:38.80 on, the belt of truth. Shout to the gospel. That's in those 00:35:38.80\00:35:42.40 little ellipses. Those three dots. "Therefore put on the full 00:35:42.40\00:35:45.11 armor of God." Armor listed. And Paul says something he does not add into the armor because 00:35:45.11\00:35:49.81 this one's nuclear. This is nuclear now. This is nuclear. 00:35:49.81\00:35:54.28 "And pray in the spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. 00:35:54.28\00:35:59.05 With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord's people." 00:35:59.05\00:36:04.79 The reason prayer is listed after Paul enumerates the pieces 00:36:04.79\00:36:09.93 of armor, I believe, is because prayer is the most potent weapon of all. It's kind of the iso. 00:36:09.93\00:36:14.77 He isos it. He says, "Let's just talk, let's end by talking about 00:36:14.77\00:36:19.41 prayer." Nuclear, nuclear. Why nuclear? Because prayer accesses 00:36:19.41\00:36:25.55 the source of all nuclear... 00:36:25.55\00:36:28.38 What would be the word after -- nuclear's an adjective. All nuclear in the universe? 00:36:32.05\00:36:36.66 Nuclear what? What? Okay, I'll take power. 00:36:36.66\00:36:43.13 That's good. The source of all nuclear power in the universe. 00:36:43.13\00:36:50.61 That's why prayer is key. Hey, listen, let's listen to somebody 00:36:50.61\00:36:56.34 pretty bright. He's in New York, the eminent pastor in New York, 00:36:56.34\00:37:00.82 Timothy Keller. He wrote just, well, it came out in Atlantic magazine, a very celebrated 00:37:00.82\00:37:08.19 magazine. February 5, 2023. Timothy Keller wrote a piece. Here's the title of the piece, 00:37:08.19\00:37:12.56 "American Christianity is Due for a Revival." That's the 00:37:12.56\00:37:17.67 title. Now you got my attention, so I'm reading it. Okay, let's 00:37:17.67\00:37:22.10 put it on screen. "All religions," Keller writes, "All religions promote and call for 00:37:22.10\00:37:27.34 prayer. But historically, during times of fast growth and renewal, Christian movements 00:37:27.34\00:37:32.81 have been marked by an extraordinary amount of communal prayer." Now, watch this. 00:37:32.81\00:37:39.19 Jonathan Edwards -- not arguably -- the number one homegrown American theologian 00:37:39.19\00:37:45.53 in the history of this continent. Jonathan Edwards 00:37:45.53\00:37:50.43 wrote of the -- Now here comes Edwards speaking. "Explicit agreement and visible union of 00:37:50.43\00:37:56.50 God's people in extraordinary prayer." I love those two words. "Extraordinary prayer for the 00:37:56.50\00:38:02.01 revival of religion. If you want a revival, you have to have extraordinary prayer." 00:38:02.01\00:38:06.65 Now, Keller goes on to comment. "Unions of believers for 00:38:06.65\00:38:11.49 prayer." Small groups, big groups, both large and small gatherings have an empowering 00:38:11.49\00:38:18.39 effect. The renewed growth of the church in the United States will not happen without it. 00:38:18.39\00:38:25.57 I'm telling you, it's nuclear. And it's necessary. Absolutely 00:38:25.57\00:38:32.74 nuclear and absolutely necessary. And do you know why it's absolutely necessary? 00:38:32.74\00:38:36.28 Because prayer is the one weapon the enemy of us all cannot stand 00:38:36.28\00:38:43.02 up against. Prove it to me, Dwight. Okay, I will. "Satan cannot endure to have 00:38:43.02\00:38:49.42 his powerful rival appealed to. For he fears and trembles before Christ's strength and 00:38:49.42\00:38:55.76 majesty." Now get this. "At the sound of fervent prayer, 00:38:55.76\00:39:00.57 Satan's whole host trembles." 00:39:00.57\00:39:04.57 We're in trouble now. We're in trouble now, they say. 00:39:05.67\00:39:11.35 The sound of fervent prayer, Satan's whole host trembles. 00:39:11.35\00:39:14.18 Keep reading. "And when angels, all-powerful, clothed with the armor --" Look at this. 00:39:14.18\00:39:19.42 "Clothed with the armory of heaven, come to the help of the 00:39:19.42\00:39:24.16 fainting, pursued soul --" By the way, that's just you against the whole army of Satan. 00:39:24.16\00:39:27.76 Just little me against the whole army is Satan. When that 00:39:27.76\00:39:32.33 happens, angels, clothed with the armory of heaven, come to the help of that fainting, 00:39:32.33\00:39:36.40 pursued soul. And when that happens, read this. Satan and his host fall back, 00:39:36.40\00:39:40.58 well knowing that their battle is going to take a lot longer than they thought at first. 00:39:40.58\00:39:45.45 Is that what it says? That this battle is going to turn their 00:39:45.45\00:39:50.12 way eventually if they just stay at it? Is that how it reads? How 00:39:50.12\00:39:53.09 does it read? That the battle is what? It is lost. It is lost. 00:39:53.09\00:39:59.39 There's no argument. There's no debate. It's over, out. 00:39:59.39\00:40:04.30 And they obey. My. Doesn't matter whether you're 00:40:04.30\00:40:09.80 young or not so young. You must engage this battle through prayer in the name of 00:40:09.80\00:40:15.48 Christ Jesus. Kneeling down in your dorm room. Your roommate 00:40:15.48\00:40:20.62 there, your roommate not there, it does not matter. You're in 00:40:20.62\00:40:23.59 the dark. You're kneeling down. And what are you doing? You're 00:40:23.59\00:40:26.89 asking Jesus to pour himself out upon you, to pour himself out upon your roommate, to pour 00:40:26.89\00:40:31.26 himself out on the guys across the hall, to pour himself out upon some friends in that other 00:40:31.26\00:40:38.07 dormitory. 00:40:38.07\00:40:39.33 In the dark, you're begging Him to send the powers away. 00:40:41.04\00:40:50.71 That's what I do when I go into my -- after running, when I go into my a little study. 00:40:52.48\00:41:00.52 No lights on. Sun isn't up, hasn't come up. I just get down 00:41:00.52\00:41:08.00 and start talking to God. And sometimes I use this phrase, and I'll repeat it over and over 00:41:08.00\00:41:12.37 again. Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me. 00:41:12.37\00:41:17.74 Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me. Sometimes I'm thinking 00:41:17.74\00:41:22.78 about somebody. I might be thinking about you. I say, "Jesus, son of David, 00:41:22.78\00:41:27.92 have mercy on her." Jesus, son of David, have mercy on them. 00:41:27.92\00:41:34.66 Many times I prayed, "Jesus, son of David, have mercy on us here 00:41:34.66\00:41:39.59 at Pioneer. Have mercy on us here at Andrews University." Jesus, son of David. 00:41:39.59\00:41:46.10 Sometimes I change it up. I say, "Jesus, lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, 00:41:46.10\00:41:51.61 have mercy on me." Jesus, lamb of God, who takes away the sins 00:41:51.61\00:41:56.31 of the world, have mercy on us. The point is, you don't need a class in how to pray. 00:41:56.31\00:42:03.69 You can just pray. He's listened to you. Shh. 00:42:03.69\00:42:08.96 Heaven is silent as you pray. 00:42:08.96\00:42:11.73 You've been waiting for that prayer, and all they need is 00:42:12.93\00:42:17.50 your permission. And in that prayer, you're crying out your permission. Deliver me now. 00:42:17.50\00:42:25.44 Deliver me now. I must have you. 00:42:25.44\00:42:27.31 That's it. Nuclear. The forces, the armies 00:42:29.51\00:42:36.89 of the enemy driven away. My, oh, my. 00:42:36.89\00:42:41.29 What was that line again? There will be no resurrection. Timothy 00:42:43.59\00:42:47.76 Keller, yeah. No resurrection without extraordinary prayer. I want to ask you a question. 00:42:47.76\00:42:51.47 Are you having extraordinary prayer, Mr. RA or Ms. RA? Are you having extraordinary 00:42:51.47\00:42:57.44 prayer in the place where you're in charge of? 00:42:57.44\00:43:00.51 Let me ask you, department chair, are you having 00:43:00.54\00:43:05.25 extraordinary prayer where you lead? 00:43:05.25\00:43:08.48 Let me ask you, teacher. 00:43:08.48\00:43:09.58 You've got a room full of students. Are you having 00:43:09.62\00:43:11.92 extraordinary prayer there? Do you open your class with prayer? 00:43:11.92\00:43:14.79 Do you end the class with prayer? Or you just say, 00:43:14.79\00:43:17.19 "I pray in my heart"? How are they going to know there's extraordinary prayer 00:43:17.19\00:43:20.66 for them if nobody's praying for them audibly? You're the voice. 00:43:20.66\00:43:26.84 It's your nuclear weapon. 00:43:26.84\00:43:28.37 How about a Sabbath school teacher? 00:43:31.51\00:43:34.51 Are you having extraordinary prayer? 00:43:34.51\00:43:37.41 Elders of this church, are you having extraordinary prayer 00:43:37.41\00:43:41.52 in this season of the battle? What are we doing? 00:43:41.52\00:43:46.35 Think this is just going to happen because we believe it 00:43:46.35\00:43:48.96 will happen? 00:43:48.96\00:43:49.86 It will not happen. It will not happen. What are you talking 00:43:49.89\00:43:54.23 about, it? Whatever you want. Revival. You put any name tag 00:43:54.23\00:43:57.83 on it you wish. It will not happen without extraordinary 00:43:57.83\00:44:01.47 prayer. I happen to agree with Timothy Keller. He's spot on. 00:44:01.47\00:44:05.17 Extraordinary prayer. And your Pathfinder club, extraordinary 00:44:05.17\00:44:09.71 prayer. Is that what we're getting? 00:44:09.71\00:44:11.18 The Academy, extraordinary prayer? The college? 00:44:13.15\00:44:18.59 Extraordinary prayer? You want revival. If we don't use our 00:44:18.59\00:44:25.56 weapon, how do we engage the battle? And how in the world and in God's name does Jesus win the 00:44:25.56\00:44:30.13 war if you won't use your weapon? True story. 00:44:30.13\00:44:35.44 There's a reporter that came out of World War II. He had Army 00:44:37.67\00:44:42.54 rank as a U.S. Army reporter. His name, Colonel Samuel Lyman 00:44:42.54\00:44:46.31 Marshall. He interviewed hundreds of soldiers in World War II and after World War II, 00:44:46.31\00:44:51.99 and he came up with a battle theory that changed military books -- unbelievable -- on 00:44:51.99\00:44:57.89 warfare. The book started to circulate. The generals were absolutely flabbergasted. 00:44:57.89\00:45:03.60 "This can't be true." But the book said it is true. And in 00:45:03.60\00:45:09.44 fact, describing the Battle of Normandy, Omaha Beach, June 6, 1944. The wave coming across 00:45:09.44\00:45:17.98 the English Channel that will eventually bring the war in 00:45:17.98\00:45:21.52 Europe, World War II, to an end. He describes in his book "Men Against Fire", that in the 00:45:21.52\00:45:26.86 Normandy invasion at Omaha Beach, only one out of five soldiers fired their guns. 00:45:26.86\00:45:34.46 One out of five. Where were the other 4/5? As I say, the 00:45:34.46\00:45:40.50 generals were absolutely appalled. He died in 1977. The book changed a military 00:45:40.50\00:45:46.24 strategy. But after he died, somebody said, "Something's not 00:45:46.24\00:45:49.78 right here." They went back and examined it and found out that 00:45:49.78\00:45:53.98 he had made it up. He had taken one battle, the battle of Makin. 00:45:53.98\00:46:00.59 And from the figures in that battle, he extrapolated this will be true for all battles. 00:46:00.59\00:46:06.80 And it was wrong. Kind of silly, isn't it? I mean, the idea that 00:46:06.80\00:46:11.20 people would go into war and not use a weapon given to them. That 00:46:11.20\00:46:17.34 is so silly. But then how many of us struggle through every day? How many of us struggle 00:46:17.34\00:46:20.51 through the long, dark nights without any meaningful engagement of the battle, 00:46:20.51\00:46:24.51 without even taking the weapon upon our lips? Well, you're 00:46:24.51\00:46:30.82 crazy. Why would you wake up in the morning knowing you're in a war? You've been born into this 00:46:30.82\00:46:34.32 war. Why wouldn't you use that weapon immediately? The hosts 00:46:34.32\00:46:38.73 will flee! Yeah, it is kind of silly to have nuclear power at the tip of your lip 00:46:41.33\00:46:49.30 and not exercising it. Wow. You want a revival around here? 00:46:49.30\00:46:56.14 You want to see the windows of heaven opened up so wide that we won't have room enough to 00:46:56.14\00:47:00.05 receive it? Then start using, start using your prayer power. 00:47:00.05\00:47:05.59 Fire those prayers to Jesus. Just fire them. He'll handle it 00:47:05.59\00:47:10.59 from there. Give him reason. Give him permission to intervene 00:47:10.59\00:47:16.97 in your life. And let him, let him do his work in our midst. Jesus, son of David, 00:47:16.97\00:47:24.44 have mercy on me. Jesus, son of David, have mercy on us. 00:47:24.44\00:47:32.58 Please. Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, 00:47:32.58\00:47:39.72 have mercy on us. I'm gonna invite you guys to come forward. 00:47:39.72\00:47:45.03 I'm calling an audible right now. I want you to come forward. 00:47:45.03\00:47:47.83 Hope Wallace is nearby. Just come forward. I want to sing 00:47:47.83\00:47:53.74 "Just As I Am." That was a beautiful song that you let us sort of surprise you. 00:47:53.74\00:47:59.11 Thanks for doing it. 00:47:59.11\00:48:00.91 You know what I want to do? I'm going to give an altar call 00:48:02.31\00:48:06.38 right now. Don't worry about the guys. They'll be here in time. I'm going to have an altar call 00:48:06.38\00:48:10.05 right now. If it occurs to you that this entrusted gift of 00:48:10.05\00:48:19.46 prayer has kind of sat on the shelf of your life and the shelf of your heart and you'd like to 00:48:19.46\00:48:28.90 give that entrusted gift, fresh power in your life and in the lives of those that you lead, 00:48:28.90\00:48:37.91 the lives of those that you play with, you live with. 00:48:37.91\00:48:43.28 These guys are going to sing "Just As I Am" without one plea. I'm going to invite you to come 00:48:47.92\00:48:54.20 forward. Okay, hold on. I'm gonna invite you to come 00:48:54.20\00:48:57.93 forward, and by coming forward, and by coming forward, you're saying -- because I'll come 00:48:57.93\00:49:01.20 forward with you. And this is not a call for everybody to come 00:49:01.20\00:49:05.51 forward. But I know I need to use that power, that nuclear power, more than I do. 00:49:05.51\00:49:12.31 So why not today, just say, "Hey, come on before we go home and have dinner, let's make a 00:49:12.31\00:49:16.42 decision." 00:49:16.42\00:49:18.15 Let's rededicate ourselves. So that's the invitation. Now, if there's somebody here 00:49:19.62\00:49:25.06 who has never come to Jesus, never publicly said, "Yeah, I 00:49:25.06\00:49:29.93 want Jesus." "I want him to take charge of my life." I want to invite you to come. 00:49:29.93\00:49:33.70 From the back of the balcony to the front of this church. Doesn't matter where you're 00:49:33.70\00:49:36.94 sitting right now, you're watching online, you can make the decision, but I want you to 00:49:36.94\00:49:40.91 do the walk. The walk will be important for you. 00:49:40.91\00:49:45.05 Some of you here have not been baptized, and I don't know. You're saying, "Well, you know, 00:49:45.05\00:49:49.52 I've just been putting it off and I'm not ready yet." Why not make a decision today? 00:49:49.52\00:49:55.46 Don't go into this battle without the power that your saviour has for you. 00:49:55.46\00:50:01.26 So I'm gonna invite you to come forward, as well. It's a 00:50:01.26\00:50:04.07 beautiful song. We just sang it a moment ago. You've never come to Jesus. You need him to be 00:50:04.07\00:50:09.97 baptized. You won't be baptized today. We'll just work with you. Take the time you need. 00:50:09.97\00:50:15.41 And you'd like to activate this gift of prayer, this nuclear 00:50:15.41\00:50:22.38 gift, against the forces. I'm gonna invite you to stand up, step on everybody's toes, 00:50:22.38\00:50:28.06 and come here to the front. And I want to pray with you. I'll be down here to meet you. 00:50:28.06\00:50:34.93 I'm not going to have everybody stand because it's hard. It's hard to step over you and 00:50:34.93\00:50:40.70 around you. So just stay seated. Close your eyes. 00:50:40.70\00:50:43.27 Let me have a prayer, and then we'll go. Okay, let me have the 00:50:43.27\00:50:45.91 prayer, and then you guys lead us. Jesus, please. 00:50:45.91\00:50:49.31 You've given us everything we need in that gift of yourself, 00:50:51.88\00:50:57.82 at Calvary. As the fellas sang just a moment ago, the blood. Now the gift of prayer 00:50:57.82\00:51:03.22 to access Calvary's nuclear power. Grant that to us. 00:51:03.22\00:51:10.67 Privately, collectively, just grant it to us. As we sing this 00:51:10.67\00:51:19.04 beautiful little hymn, "Just As I Am." 00:51:19.04\00:51:23.11 ¤¤ >> Second verse. 00:51:24.31\00:52:24.67 >> Fifth verse. 00:53:15.82\00:53:17.33 >> So, dear God, we come. We come to you. You're everything 00:54:11.68\00:54:21.99 we ever needed. You're everything we truly desire. 00:54:21.99\00:54:28.66 And we must have you, Jesus. We come just as we are. We didn't do some quick change 00:54:28.66\00:54:38.67 artistry to make us look different or the same. It was when we started walking 00:54:38.67\00:54:45.45 forward. But you want us just as we are. You won't leave us just 00:54:45.45\00:54:51.65 as we are. And that'll be your work, Holy Spirit. 00:54:51.65\00:54:56.32 For the nuclear power of prayer to bring what our hearts have always wished and longed for, 00:54:56.32\00:55:03.10 prayed for even. Every man standing in front of you. 00:55:03.10\00:55:08.64 Every woman standing in front of you right now. You know. 00:55:08.64\00:55:14.71 Put your strong nail-scarred arms around them. Hold him 00:55:14.71\00:55:21.28 close. Hold her close. And we'll go with you. Wherever you lead 00:55:21.28\00:55:26.82 us, we will go with you. 00:55:26.82\00:55:28.52 And would you mind shining out of our hearts to the people back 00:55:30.96\00:55:35.30 at home that we'll see in a few minutes? Would you mind just kind of reflecting out of our 00:55:35.30\00:55:42.80 speech? I don't know. Just do what you do. Pass it on, Jesus. 00:55:42.80\00:55:49.18 Pass it on, Holy Spirit. Just as we are, we've come. And just as it is with you now, 00:55:49.18\00:55:56.28 we leave with you with quiet confidence and blessed hope. In the name of Jesus, let all 00:55:56.28\00:56:06.80 the people say amen. And amen. God bless those of you 00:56:06.80\00:56:11.67 who came forward.
