As we continue to worship, let's 00:00:36.56\00:00:39.67 move to our call to worship. And so please read when prompted 00:00:39.67\00:00:43.47 by the words on the screen. 00:00:43.47\00:00:45.47 Let's bow our heads. God, today we come before You in humility, 00:01:09.86\00:01:15.17 bowing before You, knowing that You are God and we are here to worship. So, Lord, right now 00:01:15.17\00:01:19.51 accept our worship. Be here in this place. We turn to You, and 00:01:19.51\00:01:24.05 so let everything today glorify and uplift You. Amen. 00:01:24.05\00:01:27.72 >> We are told that if we do not praise our God, that the rocks 00:01:34.72\00:01:41.40 will cry out because He is worthy to be praised. 00:01:41.40\00:01:46.74 Let us join together with all creation 00:01:46.74\00:01:50.54 in this first song. If you'd like, I invite you 00:10:17.11\00:10:21.62 to turn to your Bibles, Acts 1:6-8. 00:10:21.62\00:10:25.75 And it reads like this. "Then they gathered around him 00:10:31.69\00:10:35.73 and asked him, 'Lord, are you at this time going to restore the 00:10:35.73\00:10:40.30 kingdom to Israel?' He said to them: 'It is not for 00:10:40.30\00:10:45.11 you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own 00:10:45.11\00:10:49.94 authority. But you will receive power when 00:10:49.94\00:10:53.82 the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in 00:10:53.82\00:10:58.55 Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the 00:10:58.55\00:11:03.36 earth.'" Oh, God, we just sang it. We go to all the world, 00:15:32.99\00:15:39.63 one name and only one name upon our lips -- the name of Jesus 00:15:39.63\00:15:47.44 Christ, our Lord. So what does that mean for us here at Andrews University and Andrews Academy 00:15:47.44\00:15:50.45 and Ruth Murdoch Elementary School and Pioneer and this little village in such a big 00:15:50.45\00:15:57.99 world? Foxhole praying. Teach us. Teach us to pray that way 00:15:57.99\00:16:05.43 we pray in Jesus name. Amen. Turns out the president of this 00:16:05.43\00:16:10.30 university, Andrea Luxton, has made a decision, and she 00:16:10.30\00:16:15.24 announced it this last week. 00:16:15.24\00:16:17.34 This Wednesday, four days from now, will be a day of prayer 00:16:17.37\00:16:22.91 at Andrews University, at Andrews Academy, at 00:16:22.91\00:16:27.45 Ruth Murdoch Elementary School, at Pioneer, and in this 00:16:27.45\00:16:31.85 community. And how should we pray? 00:16:31.85\00:16:37.23 I say, let's pray with foxhole praying. 00:16:37.23\00:16:40.70 Here we go. "Mission Impossible (Maybe): 00:16:40.70\00:16:43.87 Foxhole Praying." So let's foxhole praying? 00:16:43.87\00:16:47.14 Well, what's a foxhole? You know what a foxhole is? Yeah, it's a 00:16:47.17\00:16:52.87 hole. It's a pit. [ Laughs ] It's a trench in warfare beneath 00:16:52.87\00:16:58.81 which or inside of which soldiers duck for incoming hostile fire. [ Imitating 00:16:58.81\00:17:09.22 gunfire ] Foxhole praying. Got it right here. Never saw it 00:17:09.22\00:17:14.30 before until just a few weeks ago. And when I saw it, I said, "Oh, man, that's not something 00:17:14.30\00:17:18.73 just to share for yourself. Dwight, you got to share that with your friends." 00:17:18.73\00:17:21.54 So I'm sharing it with you today. An incredible story. 00:17:21.54\00:17:23.97 Open your Bible. Open your Bible, please, to the Book of 00:17:23.97\00:17:28.68 Acts, and I'm not putting it on the screen. I told everybody last week, "Listen, I'm tired of 00:17:28.68\00:17:32.81 putting all the verses on the screen because nobody's bringing 00:17:32.81\00:17:36.38 their Bibles." You don't have your Bible, grab the pew Bible in front of you. There's a Bible 00:17:36.38\00:17:40.19 for you. Let's go to the Book of Acts. Let me tell you something. A very unique pattern that 00:17:40.19\00:17:44.19 develops in the Book of Acts goes like this. And by the way, 00:17:44.19\00:17:50.83 you would never wish to be back in the good old days of Acts, 00:17:50.83\00:17:54.47 trust me. Number one, a friend of Jesus performs a miracle. This happens over and over 00:17:54.47\00:17:58.11 and over again in Acts. Number two, a crowd immediately gathers 00:17:58.11\00:18:03.48 out of curiosity. Number three, a friend of Jesus, that friend begins to tell everybody about 00:18:03.48\00:18:07.62 who this Jesus is -- the name and the power that healed this 00:18:07.62\00:18:12.52 poor, sick soul. Number four, the authorities become suspicious because a crowd has 00:18:12.52\00:18:17.79 gathered and this speaker holding them spellbound, who is he? Number five -- So, the 00:18:17.79\00:18:24.30 friend of Jesus is arrested and examined. So far in the story. Check, check, check, check. 00:18:24.30\00:18:28.67 We got five checks. Here comes number six. And either the 00:18:28.67\00:18:31.71 charges are pressed or the case is dropped. And finally, number seven -- check -- the disciple 00:18:31.71\00:18:37.35 is scourged, incarcerated, released, or martyred. That's 00:18:37.35\00:18:43.22 it. Over and over and over, that same pattern, Book of Acts. So 00:18:43.22\00:18:47.09 that's what's happening right now. Come on, Acts 4. You've got that Bible, that pew 00:18:47.09\00:18:50.76 Bible in front of you. Acts 4. Grab it, because this story 00:18:50.76\00:18:53.46 is going to be a YouTube. You're going to see it. When the words 00:18:53.46\00:18:56.53 are there, you'll just see it in your mind. It's one of the great opening sagas to this 00:18:56.53\00:19:02.94 Book of Acts. Acts 4:1 I'm reading. "The priests and the 00:19:02.94\00:19:06.88 captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were 00:19:06.88\00:19:11.31 speaking to the people. They were greatly disturbed because 00:19:11.31\00:19:14.22 the apostles were teaching the people, proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead." 00:19:14.22\00:19:18.69 So what do they do? Yep, true to form. "They seized Peter and 00:19:18.69\00:19:22.69 John and, because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day." 00:19:22.69\00:19:27.60 The next day, they bring the boys out. I don't know if 00:19:27.60\00:19:30.50 they're in handcuffs or not, but they're brought to the Supreme Council. This is the Sanhedrin, 00:19:30.50\00:19:35.04 and under cross-examination -- now you're watching this in a 00:19:35.04\00:19:38.84 YouTube -- under cross-examination, here it is, verse 8. "Then Peter, filled 00:19:38.84\00:19:43.65 with the Holy Spirit, said to them: 'Rulers and elders of the 00:19:43.65\00:19:47.05 people! If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was 00:19:47.05\00:19:52.92 lame...'" Hey, wait a minute. You remember that story? 00:19:52.92\00:19:55.99 They're going to a prayer meeting at 3:00. They're having 00:19:55.99\00:19:59.69 a day of prayer there. 3:00 in the afternoon, and there's this 00:19:59.69\00:20:02.46 beggar. You remember that beggar born lame? Just wobbly legs, 00:20:02.46\00:20:07.60 nothing to them. But he's brought by his family to beg 00:20:07.60\00:20:11.77 every day. Peter walks by, sympathy in his heart. "What can 00:20:11.77\00:20:17.25 I do for this boy? "Silver and gold have I none." How's that end? "Silver and gold have I 00:20:17.25\00:20:21.28 none, but such as I have I give to you." And then what are the 00:20:21.28\00:20:26.09 following words? "In the name of Jesus of Nazareth, get up and 00:20:26.09\00:20:32.36 walk." And that thick fisherman's wrist from hauling nets all his young life reaches 00:20:32.36\00:20:40.10 down because there might have been a flicker of "Do I do it now?" That wrist comes down and 00:20:40.10\00:20:44.94 grabs that bony skinny arm and yanks him heavenward. And somewhere between down and 00:20:44.94\00:20:51.35 up, boom, those legs for years have never felt pressure. Now he stands and he is whooping 00:20:51.35\00:20:59.45 and hollering and he's -- he's yelling "Praise God" and the crowd is racing from 00:20:59.45\00:21:04.33 across those sacred precincts. And you got it -- miracle, crowd, and now the rest follows. 00:21:04.33\00:21:10.97 Under the duress of cross-examination... I'm telling 00:21:10.97\00:21:15.64 you, "Rulers and elders, you've taken us to account for this act of kindness shown to a man who 00:21:15.64\00:21:22.31 was lame and were being asked how he was healed? I'll tell 00:21:22.31\00:21:25.01 you. "'Know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of 00:21:25.01\00:21:29.72 Nazareth, whom you crucified'" -- preaching truth to power -- "'whom you crucified 00:21:29.72\00:21:35.36 but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed.'" 00:21:35.36\00:21:40.56 And then Peter... Now we're talking about -- we're talking 00:21:40.56\00:21:45.17 about a bumbling fisherman, uneducated, unschooled, 00:21:45.17\00:21:51.64 unprepared at this moment. Peter speaks, and out of his mouth 00:21:51.64\00:21:58.18 comes the greatest magisterial proclamation about the uniqueness of Jesus Christ in 00:21:58.18\00:22:05.02 the entire universe. Out of that fisherman's lips on the spot. Oh, this one's too good. 00:22:05.02\00:22:11.09 I got to put -- I got to put it on the screen. It's verse 12. 00:22:11.09\00:22:14.00 Come on. Verse 12, right in front of you. Here it is. It's 00:22:14.00\00:22:17.77 Peter speaking under cross-examination. You got the YouTube moment. "Salvation is 00:22:17.77\00:22:23.81 found in no one, I'm telling you, gentlemen of the jury." "'Salvation is found in no one 00:22:23.81\00:22:27.71 else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.'" 00:22:27.71\00:22:35.25 Man, oh, man, oh, man. Jesus is the only one that counts. 00:22:35.25\00:22:43.83 It must have been -- That must have been the secret of the 00:22:43.83\00:22:46.49 early Church. "We don't have silver. You don't have gold. But what we have, in the name 00:22:46.49\00:22:50.73 of Jesus, get up and walk." Someday that's going to happen, and you may be the one 00:22:50.73\00:22:57.51 to speak the words. Hold on, foxhole praying. You'll be 00:22:57.51\00:23:03.65 ready. Alright. The Book of Acts of the apostles, oh, I love it. 00:23:03.65\00:23:06.05 "Jesus only" -- speaking of this moment, "Jesus only," in these words is contained the secret of 00:23:06.05\00:23:11.52 the life and power that mark the history of the early Church. 00:23:11.52\00:23:16.89 Jesus only. Jesus numero uno. 00:23:16.89\00:23:21.30 Jesus only. Wow. So how could this untrained, uneducated 00:23:24.10\00:23:31.24 fisherman do it? Piece of cake. Jesus told him. "Yo, Pete, when this happens to you, don't worry 00:23:31.24\00:23:37.78 about it." Did Jesus read to him? Yeah. Same author of Acts, Luke, in his Gospel, 21, 00:23:37.78\00:23:43.62 Jesus spoke these words. Not these. This is Nikolaus von 00:23:43.62\00:23:49.02 Zinzendorf. No relation to Peter. But I want this line to go up right now out of place 00:23:49.02\00:23:54.93 because it shows you what the passion of Jesus means when you 00:23:54.93\00:24:00.30 have it. I've had these words on my -- taped to my wall in the 00:24:00.30\00:24:06.88 course of life. "I have but one passion," Zinzendorf...spoke. "I have but one passion -- 00:24:06.88\00:24:13.42 It is He, only He." Peter has one passion. It is He, only He. 00:24:13.42\00:24:19.19 And under cross-examination, Jesus -- Jesus' promise to Peter absolutely does come true. 00:24:19.19\00:24:26.53 He's talking to the disciples, "But make up your mind not to 00:24:26.53\00:24:30.50 worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves." Don't plan your little speech in advance, 00:24:30.50\00:24:35.94 "For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to 00:24:35.94\00:24:42.34 resist or contradict." He proved it true for Peter. And in a moment that comes for 00:24:42.34\00:24:47.32 you where you'll be on the spot, and it may be just over a game of pickleball or over a lunch 00:24:47.32\00:24:54.19 with a business associate or a kid from across the hall that you're talking with, 00:24:54.19\00:24:58.59 but in that moment when it presents itself, boom. It's what 00:24:58.59\00:25:04.07 happened to Peter. You think he planned this speech? Are you 00:25:04.07\00:25:07.40 kidd-- Wow. What's going on here? Well, look at verse 13. 00:25:07.40\00:25:12.41 You have your Bible open. "When they saw the courage of Peter 00:25:12.41\00:25:16.04 and John" -- this is the Supreme Court -- "and realize that they were unschooled, ordinary men, 00:25:16.04\00:25:21.82 they were astonished and they took note that these men had 00:25:21.82\00:25:27.32 been with Jesus." I have one passion. That is He, only He. They were men who lived 00:25:27.32\00:25:31.93 with Jesus. Listen, when you get -- Hey. Listen. 00:25:31.93\00:25:35.70 When you get close to Jesus first thing in the morning... this is true about you. 00:25:35.70\00:25:41.67 How does it work? Well, you get close to Him and people notice. 00:25:41.67\00:25:46.41 How could that be? Because when you're with Jesus, He speaks 00:25:46.41\00:25:53.65 through you. And they took note... that these man, these two boys, His fishermen -- 00:25:53.65\00:25:59.29 fishermen -- have been with Jesus. Ah. Well, they're 00:25:59.29\00:26:05.03 flummoxed. So they had the men leave. They huddled. "What are 00:26:05.03\00:26:08.80 we going to do? This is a mess. This has get out of control." And finally, verse 18, 00:26:08.80\00:26:12.67 drop down there. They called them back in again. They command 00:26:12.67\00:26:16.04 them, "Don't you ever speak again. Don't you ever teach again at all in the name of 00:26:16.04\00:26:19.94 Jesus." But Peter and John replied. Both Both John Boy and Peter now are replying together. 00:26:19.94\00:26:26.05 "'Which is right in God's eyes: to listen to you, or to him?'" 00:26:26.05\00:26:30.09 Lookit. They're Pharisees in that Supreme Court. Every Pharisee would tell you, 00:26:30.09\00:26:32.65 "Don't listen to us. Listen to him." So it's a no-brainer. 00:26:32.65\00:26:36.76 Smart question to ask -- "'Which is right in God's eyes: to listen to you or to Him? 00:26:36.76\00:26:39.89 You be the judge! As for us, we cannot help speaking about what 00:26:39.89\00:26:44.10 we have seen or heard.'" I thought you said this is about 00:26:44.10\00:26:50.41 foxhole praying. We're now there. Watch this. They go home. They're released. "Don't you 00:26:50.41\00:26:57.05 ever say a word. Not in that name." They go back. Drop down 00:26:57.05\00:27:00.52 to verse 23. And "On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and 00:27:00.52\00:27:05.29 reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them. And when they heard 00:27:05.29\00:27:08.36 this, they raised their voices" -- and in the NIV, it's plural. I don't know what your 00:27:08.36\00:27:12.26 translation is, but the Greek, it's just singular. Not a lot of 00:27:12.26\00:27:15.53 voices. There's one voice. They all are praying with one voice. 00:27:15.53\00:27:18.20 Whatever this foxhole praying is taking place -- and we're going 00:27:18.20\00:27:22.07 to have a day of prayer on this campus and in Andrews Academy's campus and Ruth Murdoch's campus 00:27:22.07\00:27:28.71 -- whatever this one voice is, there is unanimity apparently in 00:27:28.71\00:27:34.62 the content of the prayer. Watch this. We listened to Daniel pray 00:27:34.62\00:27:38.32 last week, didn't we? Now we're listening to a whole room full 00:27:38.32\00:27:42.79 -- the upper room. And by the way, the upper room is huge. I once had the privilege 00:27:42.79\00:27:45.23 of preaching in that upper room. Archeologists are absolutely 00:27:45.23\00:27:49.33 convinced that that is the actual upper room of the gospels 00:27:49.33\00:27:53.23 in Acts. It's a huge room. I was so surprised. They're all 00:27:53.23\00:27:58.84 crowded in there. They've heard the threats and now they begin to pray. So drop down to verse 00:27:58.84\00:28:04.28 24. "When they heard this, they raised their voices together in 00:28:04.28\00:28:07.58 prayer. "Sovereign Lord,' they said, 'you made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and 00:28:07.58\00:28:12.82 everything in them.'" By the way, that's the last line of the fourth commandment. 00:28:12.82\00:28:17.69 They're Seventh Day people. "'Sovereign Lord, Creator, who made the heavens and the earth 00:28:17.69\00:28:23.77 and the sea, and everything in them.'" Identical line. 00:28:23.77\00:28:27.54 "'You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David.'" 00:28:27.54\00:28:31.27 They now quote Psalm 2. "'Why do the nations rage and the peoples 00:28:31.27\00:28:36.58 plot in vain? The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord 00:28:36.58\00:28:40.45 and against his anointed one.'" Why do they all rise up against the Messiah whom we serve, 00:28:40.45\00:28:44.79 the living Christ? "'Indeed,'" they go on in that prayer, 00:28:44.79\00:28:49.86 "'Herod,'" that's the half-Jew king, "'Pontius Pilot,'" that's the Roman governor, "'met 00:28:49.86\00:28:55.93 together with the Gentiles,'" those are the pagans, "'and the people of Israel in this city to 00:28:55.93\00:29:01.47 conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you 00:29:01.47\00:29:06.64 anointed. And now...'" That's my next word in my translation, but 00:29:06.64\00:29:11.88 hold it right there because here comes -- here comes...the foxhole prayer. And I'll tell 00:29:11.88\00:29:19.22 you what's not the foxhole prayer. Have you noticed they haven't said a word about 00:29:19.22\00:29:23.86 "Would you please protect us?" Haven't said a word about "Would you please deliver us?" 00:29:23.86\00:29:29.83 And what struck me as I had brooded over this is last fall, they don't even say, 00:29:29.83\00:29:36.77 "Send down the Holy Spirit." Not a word about the Holy Spirit. 00:29:36.77\00:29:44.65 They come instead to verse 29, and I'm going to "iso" this -- this line on the screen for us 00:29:44.65\00:29:51.22 all. "'Now Lord, consider their threats and enable Your servants 00:29:51.22\00:29:58.29 to speak Your word with great boldness.'" I repeat, look at 00:29:58.29\00:30:06.80 that prayer. No pleading for protection, no praying for deliverance, not even a prayer 00:30:06.80\00:30:10.11 for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. They have one prayer. It is a foxhole prayer 00:30:10.11\00:30:14.51 that has one passion. "Lord, help us help You win the war. 00:30:14.51\00:30:21.12 Enable Your humble servants... to speak Your word with great 00:30:21.12\00:30:28.26 boldness... to show the truth about Jesus for those who don't know Him." That's it. One 00:30:28.26\00:30:35.53 prayer. "'Now Lord, consider their threats and enable Your servants to speak Your word with 00:30:35.53\00:30:41.40 great boldness.'" You say, "Aw, Dwight, there's more to that 00:30:41.40\00:30:44.91 prayer. You left it off." Well, it's true. There's one more 00:30:44.91\00:30:47.31 verse. I'll show you the verse after in this prayer. It's verse 00:30:47.31\00:30:51.18 30. You can reduce the prayer to a language you and I can speak easily to Jesus any time. 00:30:51.18\00:30:56.32 "Grant us the boldness to reach lost people for You." That's it. 00:30:56.32\00:31:00.56 Here's the next verse. Verse 30. "'And stretch out your hand to 00:31:05.59\00:31:11.67 heal and perform signs and wonders'" -- And oh, by the way, next week, "Avatars" -- you've 00:31:11.67\00:31:16.27 heard of avatars. "Avatars and Angels." Everybody's heard of 00:31:16.27\00:31:20.94 avatars on this planet this new year. "'Stretch out your hand'" -- Don't miss next week. 00:31:20.94\00:31:28.38 Signs and wonders. Signs and wonders. "'Stretch out your hand 00:31:28.38\00:31:31.25 to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.'" 00:31:31.25\00:31:34.72 And here's the conclusion. "After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was 00:31:34.72\00:31:39.63 shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke 00:31:39.63\00:31:44.33 the word of God boldly." I'm tell you. No prayer for 00:31:44.33\00:31:50.57 protection. No pleading for "deliver us from evil." No petitioning, "Pour out the 00:31:50.57\00:31:56.58 Holy Spirit upon us." They have one single prayer -- ""Grant us the boldness to reach 00:31:56.58\00:32:04.52 lost people for You.'" So what's the lesson here? Two lessons. 00:32:04.52\00:32:09.99 One, we ought to pray the same prayer. And number two, we've 00:32:09.99\00:32:15.13 been wrong. We have been wrong, and I finally realized it. 00:32:15.13\00:32:19.37 You say, "Wrong about what?" Well, let me explain. Several 00:32:19.37\00:32:23.87 months ago, when Karen and I announced that we were bringing our pastorate here at Pioneer 00:32:23.87\00:32:27.58 to an end, the end of May, this coming May, in the homily that 00:32:27.58\00:32:32.55 followed -- some of you'll remember this. In the homily that followed, I happened to 00:32:32.55\00:32:37.29 mention that for 39 years, there has been one prayer that I'd 00:32:37.29\00:32:41.56 pray again and again on and off. I'll be honest, more off 00:32:41.56\00:32:48.83 sometimes than on. But one prayer that I prayed over these 39 years, and, man, nothing's 00:32:48.83\00:32:55.87 happened. "What's that prayer, Dwight?" Well, it's a prayer, "Dear God, would You please 00:32:55.87\00:32:59.81 revive? Would You please revive this wonderful campus Andrews 00:32:59.81\00:33:03.01 University and the Pioneer Memorial Church and Andrews Academy and Ruth Murdoch 00:33:03.01\00:33:08.32 Elementary School? Would You please revive us? Pour out Your spirit on us." Well, I received 00:33:08.32\00:33:17.89 an e-mail instantly. I didn't see it instantly, but the timestamp indicates 00:33:17.89\00:33:21.70 this person sent the e-mail as soon as I finished my homily. I 00:33:21.70\00:33:26.84 have no idea who this person is. All I have is a last name. I have no idea where he 00:33:26.84\00:33:31.31 or she is living on this planet. But I'm going to read the e-mail 00:33:31.31\00:33:35.94 to you. It's very short. And it goes like this. "Sir," I don't 00:33:35.94\00:33:43.69 mind that. You wanna call me sir, be my guest. 00:33:43.69\00:33:46.69 "Sir, FYI" -- In case you don't know what FYI stands for, For Your Information, alright? 00:33:46.69\00:33:54.86 "Sir, FYI, from all appearances, Almighty God has been utilizing you and PMC for revival. 00:33:54.86\00:34:03.24 Perhaps the revival is other than your definition." >> Mercy. 00:34:03.24\00:34:08.11 >> [ Laughs ] That's exactly what I said. Mercy! 00:34:08.11\00:34:14.12 I have no idea who this guy is or girl. But it just hit me like 00:34:14.12\00:34:22.62 a bolt. What was that line again? "Perhaps the revival 00:34:22.66\00:34:26.33 is other than your definition." And I have been mulling on that. 00:34:26.33\00:34:31.53 I've been brooding on that all the fall behind us. 00:34:31.53\00:34:34.40 Could it be I have been insisting to God on a definition 00:34:34.40\00:34:37.84 of revival that is not His definition for today? 00:34:37.84\00:34:43.41 Man. And then when I discover 00:34:43.41\00:34:48.45 this prayer that we just discovered... 00:34:48.45\00:34:52.12 that there's no mention of protection, 00:34:52.12\00:34:54.89 there's no pleading for "Don't let me die. 00:34:54.89\00:34:56.96 Don't let me die. Keep me out of prison. 00:34:56.96\00:34:58.79 Don't let anything -- Don't let any harm or danger 00:34:58.79\00:35:00.96 come to me," none of that. 00:35:00.96\00:35:02.73 There's not even a prayer for "Send down the Holy Spirit. We're ready down here." 00:35:02.76\00:35:07.50 None of that. When hits me as I'm reading this last fall Acts 00:35:07.50\00:35:15.61 4, could it be we have prayed the wrong prayer? Because I know 00:35:15.61\00:35:23.12 people all over this campus and community who have been praying and praying for God 00:35:23.12\00:35:27.52 to pour out a spirit on Andrews University and Andrews Academy 00:35:27.52\00:35:30.46 and Ruth Murdoch Elementary School. And by the way, that is a very appropriate prayer. 00:35:30.46\00:35:34.63 I'm not dissing the prayer, but it may not be the right one. 00:35:34.63\00:35:38.93 "'Grant us the boldness to reach lost people for You.'" 00:35:42.27\00:35:50.01 Hmm! Wow. 00:35:52.21\00:35:57.35 After all, wasn't that -- Come on. Come on. Now it's dawning on 00:36:00.19\00:36:04.73 me. Wasn't that precisely what Jesus was saying when His last 00:36:04.73\00:36:09.63 words are spoken to the 11 disciples on top of the Mount of Olives? Red letters in Acts 1, 00:36:09.63\00:36:16.30 read by our praise team a moment ago. Our Scripture reading, 00:36:16.30\00:36:21.18 isn't that what Jesus is saying right here? Come on, look at it. 00:36:21.18\00:36:23.75 "But you will receive power," boys and girls. "You will 00:36:23.75\00:36:31.05 receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you." And why would the Holy Spirit come on 00:36:31.05\00:36:34.92 you? Because "'you will then be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, 00:36:34.92\00:36:40.66 and to the ends of the earth.'" When the Holy Spirit comes on you -- He's promising us, 00:36:40.66\00:36:47.27 "When the Holy Spirit comes on you, I promise you not you might 00:36:47.27\00:36:52.87 be, you may be. No, you will be." Do you understand that? When you have the Spirit 00:36:52.87\00:36:59.25 of Christ come upon you, you will be. And that's a promise. 00:36:59.25\00:37:04.05 "You will be My witnesses to the people next door, to the people in the next state, to 00:37:04.05\00:37:08.76 the people in the next country, to the ends of the earth. I promise you, you will be 00:37:08.76\00:37:17.10 My witness." Whew! I guess this is starting 00:37:17.10\00:37:23.54 to make sense. Which, by the way, is precisely why when the 00:37:23.54\00:37:30.41 early Church engages foxhole praying, there is not a whisper of the Holy Spirit. 00:37:30.41\00:37:36.02 They have one passion. One passion. Enable. 00:37:36.02\00:37:41.09 Come on, "Grant us the boldness." Enable Your servants 00:37:41.09\00:37:45.83 "to reach lost people for You." You say, "Dwight, I'm not a 00:37:45.83\00:37:49.26 servant of Jesus." Oh, yes, you are. Because if you're a disciple, you're a servant. 00:37:49.26\00:37:52.93 "Well, I'm not even a disciple." Oh, yes, you are -- soon -- because a disciple? 00:37:52.93\00:38:00.61 Follow Jesus. Some of you are here and you're not following 00:38:00.61\00:38:05.51 Jesus yet. But you came because some friends came and it seems 00:38:05.51\00:38:08.68 the right thing to do on a religious institution -- institutionalized campus. You're 00:38:08.68\00:38:15.26 going to become a friend of Jesus. I can tell just by 00:38:15.26\00:38:18.53 looking at you. He's already marked you. He's got big plans for you. I'm telling you what. 00:38:18.53\00:38:24.20 And guess what? When He calls you, here's what you become. 00:38:24.20\00:38:28.87 He grants to you boldness to reach lost people for Him. Ah. 00:38:28.87\00:38:39.08 Help us help You save the lost. That's what the prayer is. Help us help You win the war. 00:38:39.08\00:38:46.39 Help me help You reach the people on this campus who are in 00:38:46.39\00:38:52.09 my little circle. Help me reach them for You. That's it. So rather than praying for 00:38:52.09\00:38:58.07 revival, to look like 1971, 1972, because that's when the big revival happened 00:38:58.07\00:39:05.71 at Andrews University. I was not here. I was at Southern... 00:39:05.71\00:39:11.68 and we got the word. "Something's happened at Andrews 00:39:11.68\00:39:16.15 University." "The great Andrews University?" "The great Andrews University. Something's 00:39:16.15\00:39:23.06 happened." A friend of mine came up to me after first service and he said, "Dwight, I was here. 00:39:23.06\00:39:28.10 I was a student when that revival took place. They had a 00:39:28.10\00:39:34.37 chapel one day and all of a sudden, poof. I don't know." I've read the records over and 00:39:34.37\00:39:39.31 over again. I've had my staff. We've pored over this. 00:39:39.31\00:39:42.14 How could we do this again? How could we do this again? Somebody 00:39:42.14\00:39:46.55 got up in chapel and gave a testimony, somebody came behind her and gave a testimony. 00:39:46.55\00:39:49.65 Somebody became behind him and gave a testimony. This chapel 00:39:49.65\00:39:53.25 went for 2 to 3 hours long right here in the Pioneer Memorial Church. What's going on here? 00:39:53.25\00:39:58.49 I don't know. Apparently, somebody was praying. 00:39:58.49\00:40:03.00 My friend Skip McCarty, who came up to me and told me he was a student here, he said, 00:40:03.00\00:40:08.37 "You know what? They were meeting in the student center at 00:40:08.37\00:40:12.84 night. And some of those meetings went all night. And 00:40:12.84\00:40:15.84 listen to this. They are praying for lost people on this campus. 00:40:15.84\00:40:21.02 They're praying. They're praying for students by name that are lost. And they know they're lost 00:40:21.02\00:40:25.09 because I was lost until something happened to me and 00:40:25.09\00:40:28.19 someone must have been praying for me. They're praying all night long. And you know what's 00:40:28.19\00:40:32.19 happening while they're praying all night long? Kids are crawling out of bed 00:40:32.19\00:40:35.76 coming down to that center and saying, 'I don't know why I'm here, but I just feel impressed 00:40:35.76\00:40:40.50 to be here.' And we were just praying him." You can't do that. 00:40:40.50\00:40:48.91 The president of the university cannot legislate that. The pastor of the church cannot 00:40:48.91\00:40:53.82 say "Now we will do that." It is spontaneous. But you have to 00:40:53.82\00:41:00.39 pray the foxhole prayer. What is that prayer? "Grant me the 00:41:00.39\00:41:05.03 boldness to reach lost people for You." And kids are praying all night long while others 00:41:05.03\00:41:11.13 are coming from the dorms in response to those prayers. My, 00:41:11.13\00:41:18.14 oh, my, oh, my. I'm not dissing on praying for the Holy Spirit, nope. I'm just saying if you're 00:41:18.14\00:41:22.71 waiting for warm fuzzies and the chance to say we had a revival 00:41:22.71\00:41:27.82 at Andrews, that ain't what we're waiting for. We need more. 00:41:27.82\00:41:31.82 We're living at the end of time. Do you understand that? We are living at the end of 00:41:31.82\00:41:34.89 time. I don't care if you believe it or not. 00:41:34.89\00:41:37.99 We're still living at the end of time. 00:41:37.99\00:41:40.83 And if Jesus came tonight, would you be ready? I'm talking to you 00:41:44.07\00:41:49.50 up there. I'm talking to you in the back, talking to you watching on live stream right 00:41:49.50\00:41:53.01 now. If Jesus were to come tonight, would you be ready? Only you can answer that. 00:41:53.01\00:42:02.42 No, the president did a wise maneuver. A decision she made 00:42:02.42\00:42:10.06 to call this campus to prayer this Wednesday and the two other 00:42:10.06\00:42:16.00 campuses in our orbit here. Can God make you bold? Are you 00:42:16.00\00:42:24.17 kidding? I want to run this by real fast before I sit down. I'm going to give you five 00:42:24.17\00:42:26.84 promises from Holy Scripture that will give you the assurance 00:42:26.84\00:42:30.95 that it is God's will for you to become bold. You haven't been bold yet. You have not been bold 00:42:30.95\00:42:34.52 yet. You know it and I know it. But He's going to make you bold. 00:42:34.52\00:42:38.79 Five promises. Jot these down real quick. I'll leave 'em up just long enough to quote 'em 00:42:38.79\00:42:42.42 and you can check them out later. Psalm 138:3. 00:42:42.42\00:42:45.63 Oh, this is something. David writing, "When I called," O God, 00:42:45.63\00:42:51.97 "You answered me; You greatly embolden me." Apparently you can 00:42:51.97\00:42:56.57 ask to be bold. "You greatly, in response to my prayer," You emboldened me." This is the new 00:42:56.57\00:43:01.68 NIV. Now here's the old NIV, which I really like too. "You 00:43:01.68\00:43:05.85 made me bold and stout-hearted." Wow. That's a promise to be 00:43:05.85\00:43:13.36 bold. Here's another one. Proverbs 28:1 -- "The wicked flee though no one pursues, 00:43:13.36\00:43:18.86 but the righteous are as bold as a [roars] lion." Come on. 00:43:18.86\00:43:26.67 I'm not making that up. There's a boldness that happens in your soul when you pray the 00:43:26.67\00:43:34.91 foxhole prayer. It happened to me just this week. 00:43:34.91\00:43:42.68 I'm in a group. We're having an intense conversation, 00:43:42.68\00:43:47.19 and the Spirit says, "Say something." And I'm saying, "I 00:43:47.19\00:43:49.96 haven't prepared anything to say." It said, "I don't care what you prepared, just say 00:43:49.96\00:43:55.63 something." And so I opened my mouth. And I'm telling you what, something came out. 00:43:55.63\00:44:03.64 I guess it was the right something to say at that moment. 00:44:03.64\00:44:09.24 Make me bold. Oh, I love Daniel 11. This is the New King James 00:44:09.24\00:44:14.12 rendition. "The people who Know their God shall be strong and carry out great exploits." 00:44:14.12\00:44:19.89 Oh, that's good. Of course, I'm going to put Acts 4:31. 00:44:19.89\00:44:22.89 That is a huge promise right here in the ending to the story. "After they prayed, the place 00:44:22.89\00:44:27.56 where they were meeting was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit 00:44:27.56\00:44:31.13 and they spoke the Word of God boldly." That's a promise. 00:44:31.13\00:44:35.57 "Girl, you do that, I'll take care of you. That boldness you 00:44:35.57\00:44:40.78 want, boy? I'll take care of you." That's what Jesus just said. You'll receive power when 00:44:40.78\00:44:46.45 the Holy Spirit comes on you. You don't have to speak in 00:44:46.45\00:44:49.18 tongues when the Holy Spirit comes on you. You don't have to see visions when the Holy Spirit 00:44:49.18\00:44:52.35 comes on you. You don't even have to heal people to prove the 00:44:52.35\00:44:55.09 Holy Spirit comes on you. The Holy Spirit comes on you when 00:44:55.09\00:45:00.73 you ask. Not with warm fuzzies. He's just there for one mission -- to enable you, sir, 00:45:00.73\00:45:07.37 to be bold in your witness for Jesus. That's His one mission. 00:45:07.37\00:45:12.74 Ohh. "You will be My witnesses to the ends of the earth.: 00:45:12.74\00:45:18.45 My, oh, my, oh, my. How does it work? Well, I'm gonna show you 00:45:18.45\00:45:23.08 right here, because Dr. Luke apparently is trying to make a 00:45:23.08\00:45:27.16 point. Twice in the same gospel, he makes the -- he quotes Jesus almost identically. 00:45:27.16\00:45:33.06 Why would you bring it back? We just saw it in Luke 21. Turn the 00:45:33.06\00:45:38.70 21 around, go to Luke 12. He has already made this promise. 00:45:38.70\00:45:42.60 But apparently the promise is so critical that Luke includes it 00:45:42.60\00:45:48.81 twice. Now, here's the other one. We went to Luke 21 a moment ago. Here's Luke 20-- Luke 00:45:48.81\00:45:54.15 12:11. I love this in the New Living Translation. Take a look 00:45:54.15\00:45:56.89 at this. Jesus speaking to His friends. You're a friend of Jesus. I'm a friend of Jesus. 00:45:56.89\00:46:00.96 Oh, and by the way, boys and girls, "'when you are brought to 00:46:00.96\00:46:05.09 trial in the synagogues and before rulers and authorities'" 00:46:05.09\00:46:09.23 -- remember that pattern in Acts? That just goes with the turf. When things get moving 00:46:09.23\00:46:14.40 again in the Church of God on Earth, this pattern will repeat. 00:46:14.40\00:46:20.11 Can't help it. Because the enemy is furious at emboldened young adults. He is furious at 00:46:20.11\00:46:26.92 teens who are emboldened. He is furious at senior citizens who suddenly have become 00:46:26.92\00:46:32.09 emboldened for Jesus. He's furious. He said, "I'll shut you 00:46:32.09\00:46:38.06 up." That's why the promise is good for you and me. Jot it 00:46:38.06\00:46:43.47 down, Luke 12:11. I left off the 12 here. 12:11-12. "'And when 00:46:43.47\00:46:47.87 you are brought to trial in the synagogues and before rulers and authorities, don't worry about 00:46:47.87\00:46:52.61 how to defend yourself or what to say, for,'" here it is, "'the Holy Spirit will teach you 00:46:52.61\00:46:58.85 what needs to be said even as you are standing there.'" No prep, no -- no CliffNotes, 00:46:58.85\00:47:07.62 no nothing on my iPhone. Nothing -- Where do I turn? Nothing. 00:47:07.62\00:47:12.16 You have no time to turn. "Speak for Me. Speak for Me now. 00:47:12.16\00:47:19.97 And if you obey that conviction, I promise you. You may feel 00:47:19.97\00:47:26.64 'haltering' -- faltering right at the beginning. No, no, no, 00:47:26.64\00:47:29.98 no, no. You just keep putting one word in front of the other, and suddenly a string of words 00:47:29.98\00:47:35.02 will be given to you with your free choice being exercised the 00:47:35.02\00:47:38.82 entire time." It's called foxhole praying. The bullet -- [ 00:47:38.82\00:47:46.13 Imitates gunfire ] Praying in a war. That's what we'll do Wednesday. Foxhole praying. 00:47:46.13\00:47:54.17 That's what we do in church. Foxhole praying. Wow. 00:47:54.17\00:48:01.44 Imagine what would happen if Andrews University and Andrews 00:48:01.44\00:48:04.08 Academy and Ruth Murdoch Elementary School and Pioneer were filled with people who 00:48:04.08\00:48:08.68 every morning prayed, "Oh, God, grant me to be bold for You in sharing Jesus. Just grant it to 00:48:08.68\00:48:17.69 me, enable me." This is the revival we need. This is the one. We don't need '71, '72. 00:48:17.69\00:48:23.77 No, we don't need it. We don't need it. We need 2023. 00:48:23.77\00:48:27.44 And that's the revival He promises. To -- Imagine a 00:48:27.44\00:48:34.24 generation of young warriors -- I'm looking at some of them right here -- a generation of 00:48:34.24\00:48:39.18 young warriors boldly speaking and sharing Jesus with their world. Anywhere on campus, 00:48:39.18\00:48:46.29 they're ready because you just sat down at the cafeteria beside 00:48:46.29\00:48:51.19 a lost person. And three minutes into your conversation, you know this is your moment. 00:48:51.19\00:48:56.50 "Speak for Me, and you will." You say, "Ah, how's it going with 'Mission Impossible'? 00:48:56.50\00:49:05.87 'Your mission, should you choose to accept it.'" 00:49:05.87\00:49:09.01 What have you been saying? To make ready a people, prepare for 00:49:11.88\00:49:14.45 the Lord? That was last week. The mission is clear. Make a 00:49:14.45\00:49:18.39 people ready. You say, "No, that's not my mission. My 00:49:18.39\00:49:21.26 mission is to teach biology here." Well, of course it is. "No, my mission is to teach 00:49:21.26\00:49:25.69 accounting here." Oh, good. "I teach PT." 00:49:25.69\00:49:28.36 Good for you. "My mission is to teach the humanities, the arts, 00:49:28.36\00:49:33.37 you know?" Good. But every one of those subjects are your entree to young minds 00:49:33.37\00:49:42.98 that have been enlisted by the God of the universe to fight for 00:49:42.98\00:49:49.62 Him. And the opportunity will present itself in the course of one semester for you to reach 00:49:49.62\00:49:54.79 that boy, that girl, and instill a boldness for Christ. You can do it. Just be bold. 00:49:54.79\00:50:03.77 Find yourself saying something in front of the class you never thought you would say, 00:50:03.77\00:50:06.97 but you just did. Good for you. Yeah. 00:50:06.97\00:50:13.44 That's what revival will look like one day. I do believe. 00:50:13.44\00:50:18.21 Well, thank you, Dr. Luxton, for your appeal for us to join this 00:50:18.21\00:50:24.52 day of prayer. And we will join you Wednesday. Oh, man, the world's a mess right now. 00:50:24.52\00:50:32.59 You saw the communiqué that she sent out. She said -- She said, 00:50:32.59\00:50:36.60 "I just was at a meeting in San Francisco of all college presidents -- secular, public, 00:50:36.60\00:50:40.80 whatever." She said, "I couldn't believe." 00:50:40.80\00:50:43.37 You read it. "I could not believe it. There's just this 00:50:43.37\00:50:47.31 sense of uncertainty. Kind of a grayness in the air. Public 00:50:47.31\00:50:52.61 education, private education, I've never seen a hit like this 00:50:52.61\00:50:58.02 post-pandemic generation is facing." By the way, it's not just education, it's health 00:50:58.02\00:51:02.26 care. I got a son who works in a health care system. He's a physician's recruiter. 00:51:02.26\00:51:06.90 Health care has taken a huge hit. Any institution, 00:51:06.90\00:51:11.70 any church entities, please. It's right to have a day of 00:51:11.70\00:51:19.07 prayer. It's not an admission of anything except, "Dear God, we need Your help now." 00:51:19.07\00:51:25.85 That's the only admission you'll make. It's foxhole praying. 00:51:25.85\00:51:29.12 You want a foxhole prayer to lift up? Here it is. 00:51:29.12\00:51:32.85 "O God, enable me to be bold for You in sharing Jesus." 00:51:32.85\00:51:37.19 Here's your prayer to take home. Psalm 50:15 -- "'Call on Me in 00:51:42.36\00:51:48.60 the day of trouble; and I will deliver you,'" that's God speaking, "'and I will honor 00:51:48.60\00:51:55.71 you.'" Wednesday all across this campus, Andrews Academy, Ruth Murdoch, Pioneer community, 00:51:55.71\00:52:03.49 we're going to have a day of prayer. "Yeah, Dwight, are we 00:52:03.49\00:52:07.46 supposed to fast for this?" That's your choice. No one's 00:52:07.46\00:52:12.36 requiring it. It's your choice. Here's what I'm learning about fasting, because I'm still 00:52:12.36\00:52:14.86 experimenting with it myself. I have found that fasting focuses your mind, sharpens your 00:52:14.86\00:52:24.07 prayers and scatters the clutter and clatter of distractions. Here's what fasting does. 00:52:24.07\00:52:30.45 Shh... Just like a laser. Why wouldn't God love 00:52:30.45\00:52:35.02 to have His kids come to Him with laser attention? Of course. 00:52:35.02\00:52:41.02 "Fasting will hurt me." I'm just looking at you. 00:52:41.06\00:52:48.56 I don't think you'll be hurt. [ Laughter ] 00:52:48.56\00:52:52.17 I think you'll survive. I tried to be careful 00:52:52.17\00:52:56.07 where I looked. [ Laughter ] 00:52:56.07\00:53:01.28 Come on. Then at the end of the day, 5:00 00:53:01.28\00:53:04.65 in this beautiful sanctuary, we're going to gather. 00:53:04.65\00:53:07.38 All students are being invited. All staff, all faculty, all 00:53:07.42\00:53:14.76 administrators, all chaplains, all pastors, all community members. We're going to gather 00:53:14.76\00:53:20.00 here at 5:00, and the president himself will address this group. And we will lift up our voices, 00:53:20.00\00:53:27.24 plural will become singular. One voice will be lifted up to God. 00:53:27.24\00:53:30.54 A foxhole prayer. "'Call on Me in the day of trouble,'" You 00:53:30.54\00:53:35.54 say? We claim it, for You have promised "I will deliver you, Andrews University, 00:53:35.54\00:53:42.42 and you will honor Me, Andrews University. You will honor Me." 00:53:42.42\00:53:50.39 Okay. So I'm gonna sit down. "And the place where they were 00:53:50.39\00:53:55.40 meeting was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy 00:53:55.40\00:54:01.17 Spirit, and they spoke the Word of God boldly." May that be the 00:54:01.17\00:54:08.78 truth about you and me and us together... 00:54:08.78\00:54:12.11 ...right now.
