Were the people in the Bible any different to us today? 00:00:02.50\00:00:07.37 Were ordinary people like you and me 00:00:07.40\00:00:12.47 What can we find out from their lives that would help us? 00:00:22.88\00:00:25.45 Find out with Pr. Geoff Youlden and Rosemary Malkiewycz 00:00:28.59\00:00:32.56 here on People Just Like Us. 00:00:32.59\00:00:35.43 Throughout history there have been powerful people who've been 00:00:35.46\00:00:41.57 willing to do anything to stay in power. But because some are 00:00:41.60\00:00:46.68 jealous and scheming they live without peace. They quickly 00:00:46.71\00:00:50.95 dispose of anyone they think could be a threat to them even 00:00:50.98\00:00:55.05 their own family members. Their behavior is like the one who 00:00:55.08\00:00:58.72 rules their heart, Satan. One such person was Herod the Great. 00:00:58.75\00:01:04.26 A great builder, he was also a great tyrant and schemer. Tell 00:01:04.29\00:01:09.96 us about this man and the power behind him, Pastor Geoff. 00:01:10.00\00:01:13.10 Well, Rosemary, I guess everybody's heard of Herod the 00:01:13.13\00:01:16.47 Great because of his infamous action in killing all the babies 00:01:16.50\00:01:20.31 in Bethlehem. 00:01:20.34\00:01:21.68 I certainly did because when we went to Israel we learned a lot 00:01:21.71\00:01:24.81 about him. He was a great builder. 00:01:24.85\00:01:26.45 Yeah, well there are lots of monuments today to his ability 00:01:26.48\00:01:31.22 to build but not his ability of having a good character. 00:01:31.25\00:01:34.79 That's right. Let me tell you about some things he built 00:01:34.82\00:01:39.29 though because that's what he's known for by many people. He 00:01:39.33\00:01:43.23 built Masada, the fortress and palace of Masada. Here's a 00:01:43.26\00:01:49.44 picture of the model of his palace. Then there's now today 00:01:49.47\00:01:54.34 the ruins that you get to see of Masada. Quite a fascinating 00:01:54.38\00:01:58.95 place. It was a wonderful place that he built there, swimming 00:01:58.98\00:02:03.85 pools and all sorts of things out in the desert. 00:02:03.89\00:02:07.22 He built Herodian. He actually 00:02:07.26\00:02:09.32 moved a whole mountain and built this monument to himself and 00:02:09.36\00:02:13.40 called it after himself. He rebuilt the temple, extended 00:02:13.43\00:02:19.00 the temple and renovated the temple in Jerusalem and built 00:02:19.03\00:02:23.34 a wall around it. Here's part of the wall today and there's a 00:02:23.37\00:02:28.84 model of it in Jerusalem. It was massive and he built that. This 00:02:28.88\00:02:35.08 is the most famous part of the wall, the wailing wall. 00:02:35.12\00:02:37.72 That's what 00:02:37.75\00:02:39.82 everybody knows today. He built Caesarea by the Mediterranean 00:02:39.85\00:02:45.36 sea. (The aqueduct). Well he did those too, but this is the 00:02:45.39\00:02:49.36 amphitheater at Caesarea. You can still, go and see these 00:02:49.40\00:02:52.50 things. And he had a hippodrome there for chariot races. He had 00:02:52.53\00:02:56.34 his swimming pool. He loved swimming pools. But he built the 00:02:56.37\00:02:59.81 aqueduct and that is still standing today where he got 00:02:59.84\00:03:03.31 fresh water, 40 miles, to put fresh water in his swimming pool 00:03:03.35\00:03:08.05 because he didn't like salt water. He builds caldarium's, 00:03:08.08\00:03:13.09 solariums, frigidariums, tepidariums, where people could 00:03:13.12\00:03:16.12 get hot and cold water treatment He built the amphitheater, he 00:03:16.16\00:03:19.96 built the hippodrome. He built massive things that are still 00:03:20.00\00:03:23.43 available for us to see 2000 years later. But he didn't have 00:03:23.47\00:03:27.70 a good character to go with it. 00:03:27.74\00:03:29.10 He certainly didn't and that's what we want to talk about 00:03:29.14\00:03:31.44 today. We do. Rosemary. It is true that when you go to Israel 00:03:31.47\00:03:34.54 today he stands out as a big character but... 00:03:34.58\00:03:38.08 It's the character that's the problem. 00:03:38.55\00:03:41.42 He's not a good man. No. And killing all the babies in 00:03:41.45\00:03:45.62 Bethlehem is an illustration of his character. You know 00:03:45.65\00:03:48.26 one of the things that interests me in the Bible is the contrasts 00:03:48.29\00:03:51.43 that we have with characters in the Bible. I mean you take the 00:03:51.46\00:03:56.93 characters of Cain and Abel, the difference. In the Bible you 00:03:56.97\00:04:02.47 know it's in juxtaposition and it's Jacob and Esau. As you 00:04:02.50\00:04:07.28 think about all of these contrasts, Pharaoh and Moses. 00:04:07.31\00:04:10.05 And how the Bible puts them against one another. And then we 00:04:10.08\00:04:14.18 have Elijah and Jezebel is another illustration. John the 00:04:14.22\00:04:18.99 Baptist and Herod Antipas. Now he's another Herod, different to 00:04:19.15\00:04:23.32 Herod the Great. This is the Herod at the time of John the 00:04:23.36\00:04:25.63 Baptist who took his head off. Then there's Judas and John. 00:04:25.66\00:04:30.83 You know what a contrast there is between those two individuals 00:04:30.87\00:04:35.30 Paul and Nero. And then we have of course the two kings of the 00:04:35.34\00:04:40.14 Jews. One Herod the Great that we were talking about today and 00:04:40.18\00:04:45.31 of course Jesus. Now you have to admit that whatever Herod the 00:04:45.35\00:04:52.09 Great was good at he was certainly good at killing people 00:04:52.12\00:04:56.69 You know, he murdered his three sons and gave the order to kill 00:04:56.73\00:05:00.36 his third son while he was on his death bed of all things. He 00:05:00.40\00:05:05.00 drowned the high priest and the brother of his queen. Then he 00:05:05.03\00:05:09.14 strangled his queen for which he suffered torture and remorse for 00:05:09.17\00:05:13.11 rest of his life. 00:05:13.14\00:05:14.48 You know, the son-in-law the king murdered, he actually 00:05:14.51\00:05:18.75 drowned him, had him drowned in one of his swimming pools. 00:05:18.78\00:05:21.08 He had three palaces at Jericho and one of them was where he 00:05:21.12\00:05:28.22 killed his brother-in-law who was the high priest. He was only 00:05:28.26\00:05:31.29 17 years old, but he was so handsome and regal looking that 00:05:31.33\00:05:36.87 Herod felt like he was a threat to his empire, that he may be 00:05:36.90\00:05:40.64 made king because Herod wasn't a real king in the fact of being 00:05:42.40\00:05:45.04 born into the kingship. He was made a king by the Romans and 00:05:45.07\00:05:49.94 so he was afraid all the time he was going to lose that power and 00:05:49.98\00:05:53.21 someone else was going to take his place. 00:05:53.25\00:05:54.58 Well that's typical of Herod because that's why he was 00:05:54.62\00:05:57.69 jealous of the Babe in Bethlehem, killed the babies. 00:05:57.72\00:06:00.59 He was a very insecure man even though he did all these 00:06:00.62\00:06:05.39 buildings, very, very insecure. And these are just a few of the 00:06:05.43\00:06:09.66 crimes and the bloody deeds of this evil king who was 00:06:09.70\00:06:14.34 supposedly king of the Jews at the time when Jesus was born in 00:06:14.37\00:06:18.24 Bethlehem. He had an incurable suspicion, and this is part of 00:06:18.27\00:06:20.98 his character that I find interesting. He trusted nobody. 00:06:21.01\00:06:24.91 And was full of jealousy. 00:06:24.95\00:06:26.41 How could you live like that? I mean it would be so unhappy. 00:06:26.45\00:06:32.12 You would wonder wouldn't you? And finally he developed an 00:06:32.15\00:06:34.69 incurable disease from which he died. And when he was dying, 00:06:34.72\00:06:39.06 Rosemary, Herod was lying in his misery in his ivory palace down 00:06:39.09\00:06:44.03 there at Jericho and he realized that when people heard of his 00:06:44.07\00:06:48.77 death they would rejoice. You know, that would be so happy 00:06:48.80\00:06:51.41 that finally he was dead. So what he did, the evil, conniving 00:06:51.44\00:06:56.78 man that he was, he gave orders that all the representatives of 00:06:56.81\00:07:00.62 the chief families of the land be shut up in the hippodrome 00:07:00.65\00:07:05.15 and at the very moment of his death they were all to be killed 00:07:05.19\00:07:10.19 and his reasoning was that there would be then mourning and 00:07:10.23\00:07:15.30 sorrow in the land. 00:07:15.33\00:07:16.67 Yeah, throughout the country. Isn't it good to know though 00:07:16.70\00:07:18.73 that those who were put in charge of that knew Herod so 00:07:18.77\00:07:22.84 well that they didn't do it. They didn't carry out that wish 00:07:22.87\00:07:27.21 of his. Yes, well so this is the man 00:07:27.24\00:07:29.08 we're studying about today. When the wise men came from the east 00:07:29.11\00:07:33.62 and everybody knows the story, and wanted to worship the 00:07:33.65\00:07:36.85 newborn king of the Jews, he wanted to find out about this 00:07:36.89\00:07:41.49 baby. And when he learned that the baby King was to be born in 00:07:41.52\00:07:45.49 Bethlehem, as the prophet Micah had prophesied, remember, what 00:07:45.53\00:07:50.47 was it? 500 years before. He asked the wise men to come back 00:07:50.50\00:07:54.97 and tell him where he was so that he could supposedly come 00:07:55.00\00:07:59.51 and worship this newborn king. 00:07:59.54\00:08:02.91 But he knew it was going to be in Bethlehem, because that's 00:08:02.94\00:08:05.25 what the Israelites told him, but he just didn't know where. 00:08:05.28\00:08:12.59 Correct. But we all know the story. After giving to Joseph 00:08:12.62\00:08:15.02 and Mary their gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh, God 00:08:15.06\00:08:18.33 warned the wise men in a dream not to go back and rather go 00:08:18.36\00:08:27.64 back a different way, not go back via Herod. When Herod 00:08:27.67\00:08:31.47 realized of course that he'd been deceived by the wise men, 00:08:31.51\00:08:34.94 his cruel and criminal mind ordered all babies under the age 00:08:34.98\00:08:38.88 of two to be killed in Bethlehem and the surrounding district. 00:08:38.91\00:08:41.78 Perhaps you know we can begin to imagine the mourning and the 00:08:41.82\00:08:47.92 sorrow that would be taking place in Bethlehem at this time. 00:08:47.96\00:08:52.96 And not only that, it would be a continual reminder to them 00:08:52.99\00:08:54.96 that there were no male children at least in that age group in 00:08:55.00\00:08:59.90 Bethlehem. They were missing. So it's not something that will 00:08:59.93\00:09:04.57 happen and you're upset and it's a dreadful time of mourning. It 00:09:04.61\00:09:08.44 will continue on because there's always a constant reminder. 00:09:08.48\00:09:10.85 Yeah. The one child that he wanted to kill escaped because 00:09:10.88\00:09:17.25 Joseph and Mary had been warned to leave Bethlehem immediately 00:09:17.29\00:09:20.46 and go down to Egypt. And there the child was safe from Herod's 00:09:20.59\00:09:24.53 hands, you remember Rosemary, as Moses was from Pharaoh 1500 00:09:24.56\00:09:29.33 years before that. In fact, it's interesting to read the 00:09:29.36\00:09:33.80 statement in Matthew. I'm sure many of our viewers will know 00:09:33.84\00:09:39.64 the statement, some may not. This is the book of Matthew, 00:09:39.67\00:09:42.44 the second chapter and verse 19 where it says now when Herod was 00:09:42.48\00:09:49.55 dead, if you were living back in those days would be a good thing 00:09:49.58\00:09:55.42 When Herod was dead, behold an angel of the Lord appeared in a 00:09:55.46\00:09:59.83 dream to Joseph in Egypt saying arise, take the young child and 00:09:59.86\00:10:03.47 his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the 00:10:03.50\00:10:06.63 young child's life are dead. This verse, to my mind, 00:10:06.67\00:10:12.87 illustrates the age-old struggle that's gone on between right 00:10:12.91\00:10:18.15 and wrong, between good and evil between Christ and Satan, light 00:10:18.18\00:10:23.79 and darkness. Because the kingdom of God and the kingdom 00:10:23.82\00:10:26.76 of Satan are continually at war against one another and really 00:10:26.79\00:10:31.59 the Bible stories are stories that illustrate that war that's 00:10:31.63\00:10:37.23 continually going on and that's why the Bible says here when 00:10:37.27\00:10:41.64 Herod was dead. As I said down through the ages there are 00:10:41.67\00:10:48.61 always some who are the Herod's, who arise against God. But 00:10:48.64\00:10:55.98 always the Herod's die and the plans of God continue. 00:10:56.02\00:10:59.65 That's a relief. 00:10:59.69\00:11:01.46 Well it is and I've often thought just as well we do die. 00:11:01.49\00:11:06.66 Imagine if human beings didn't die and the evil people who have 00:11:06.70\00:11:11.00 done such dreadful things down through the ages 00:11:11.03\00:11:13.17 lives eternally. 00:11:13.20\00:11:14.54 Mmm. They just keep on living and as more evil people were 00:11:14.57\00:11:23.95 born they would be fighting each other but they would also be 00:11:23.98\00:11:25.68 confederating together. 00:11:25.71\00:11:27.55 Well it would get worse and worse as they got older 00:11:27.58\00:11:28.92 and older. 00:11:28.95\00:11:30.29 But anyway God has well cared for that. You know, when I 00:11:30.32\00:11:32.29 first began to study the Bible I was shocked, literally shocked 00:11:32.32\00:11:37.26 to find out that the first war that was ever fought was not 00:11:37.29\00:11:42.20 down on this earth, it was actually in heaven. And I wanted 00:11:42.23\00:11:46.07 to read that Rosemary because this struggle as I said, we're 00:11:46.10\00:11:50.37 talking about Herod. This illustrates the age-old struggle 00:11:50.41\00:11:57.28 between good and evil. And this is Revelation 12 and we want to 00:11:57.31\00:12:03.18 pick up in verse 7 where it says this and war broke out in heaven 00:12:03.22\00:12:13.19 Imagine, it says war broke out in Europe. 00:12:13.23\00:12:20.07 Ah, you expect that. 00:12:20.10\00:12:21.44 It would be terrible but it would be terrible to send the 00:12:21.47\00:12:23.64 shudders down your back. But here the Bible says the 00:12:23.67\00:12:25.21 first war began in heaven. Michael and his angels fought 00:12:25.24\00:12:29.94 with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought. Now we're 00:12:29.98\00:12:34.08 very clear. In verse 9 it tells us that the Dragon is the Devil. 00:12:34.12\00:12:38.92 So here Michael, Christ, and his angels fought against the Devil 00:12:38.95\00:12:46.03 who deceived one-third of the angels. So he had quite a lot 00:12:46.06\00:12:51.03 of angels on his side too. 00:12:51.07\00:12:52.43 But there were still two-thirds that were close to God remained 00:12:52.47\00:12:57.04 loyal. 00:12:57.07\00:12:58.41 The text goes on to say, but they did not prevail, nor was a 00:12:58.44\00:13:01.94 place found for them in heaven any longer. So the great dragon 00:13:01.98\00:13:06.11 was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, 00:13:06.15\00:13:10.02 who deceives the whole world. And that's what we've always got 00:13:10.05\00:13:14.32 to remember that our world is deceived and when we talk to 00:13:14.36\00:13:17.96 people we've got to remember that all of us are deceived. 00:13:17.99\00:13:22.30 Unless we have the enlightenment of God's word we are deceived. 00:13:22.33\00:13:27.30 Our minds have been interfered with. 00:13:27.34\00:13:29.80 And that's where Paul writes that spiritual things are 00:13:29.84\00:13:32.97 spiritually discerned. It's only the Holy Spirit that can give 00:13:33.01\00:13:37.08 you the understanding, because you're not allowing Him to help 00:13:37.11\00:13:40.28 you, you will be deceived by evil. 00:13:40.32\00:13:43.85 Yes, well, we'd better remember that the whole world is being 00:13:43.89\00:13:46.45 deceived. He was cast to the earth and his angels were cast 00:13:46.49\00:13:49.56 out with him. Verse 10 goes on to say: 00:13:49.59\00:13:54.36 And so the Bible is very clear here that this war began. So 00:14:10.68\00:14:17.29 what's happening in the world today between good and evil, 00:14:17.32\00:14:20.16 and we see it every time you read the newspaper or listen to 00:14:20.19\00:14:23.36 the television or the radio, wherever we are seeing out 00:14:23.39\00:14:27.00 working the good versus evil. It often appears Rosemary 00:14:27.03\00:14:34.50 that evil seems to triumph, doesn't it. 00:14:34.54\00:14:36.50 It seems that way, but the Bible tells us that that's not the end 00:14:36.54\00:14:40.84 of the story. 00:14:40.88\00:14:42.44 Now, well thankfully this verse goes on to say in verse 13... 00:14:42.48\00:14:48.32 Now this is where the war that began in heaven now comes down 00:14:55.82\00:15:01.06 to this earth and he's persecuted the woman. 00:15:01.10\00:15:04.97 Now in Bible prophecy in the Bible the Bible uses to word 00:15:05.00\00:15:09.24 woman to illustrate the church both good and bad. In fact, in 00:15:09.27\00:15:13.61 Revelation if you read it through there are two women 00:15:13.64\00:15:17.15 pictured, a pure woman which represents His pure church and a 00:15:17.18\00:15:21.22 harlot, fallen woman who represents the fallen church. So 00:15:21.25\00:15:26.89 there were two in contrast. 00:15:26.92\00:15:28.26 And he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male child but 00:15:28.29\00:15:30.76 the woman... The male child being Christ. 00:15:30.79\00:15:32.19 That's right, yes. 00:15:32.23\00:15:34.73 Now this is a reference, and we haven't got time to go into all 00:15:45.77\00:15:48.68 the detail now but this is the period of what history referred 00:15:48.71\00:15:52.31 to as the dark ages, the 1260 year period of when the medieval 00:15:52.35\00:15:58.99 church dominated and ruled Europe and the world. 00:15:59.02\00:16:04.16 and that's mentioned in the book of Daniel, the time, times and 00:16:04.19\00:16:07.93 half a time. 00:16:07.96\00:16:10.67 In fact it's mentioned several times, yes. So verse 15 says: 00:16:10.70\00:16:12.90 In other words, he was trying to kill the woman and her seed. 00:16:19.41\00:16:24.11 And verse 16... 00:16:24.15\00:16:34.36 And this is a reference, of course, to the people who were 00:16:34.39\00:16:38.69 like Waldenses and the Huguenots in France and the Waldenses in 00:16:38.73\00:16:42.93 Italy and the Albigenses who were faithful to God through 00:16:42.96\00:16:47.17 this period and some of the most gruesome stories that you can 00:16:47.20\00:16:51.34 read are the attacks of this people, this apostate church, 00:16:51.37\00:16:57.31 upon these dear people who endeavored to be faithful to God 00:16:57.35\00:17:01.82 It was the dragon trying to send his flood of persecution and 00:17:01.85\00:17:08.59 death on the people of God. 00:17:08.62\00:17:10.66 Well and once again it's illustrating the age-old problem 00:17:10.69\00:17:15.26 between good and evil. And when we see evil going on in the 00:17:15.30\00:17:22.70 world today we've got to recognize that this is part of 00:17:22.74\00:17:25.31 this war that's going on. Finally it says in verse 17 here 00:17:25.34\00:17:34.15 that the dragon was enraged. Now that word really means very 00:17:34.18\00:17:41.22 angry. Your jugular. You know if you talk to someone and they get 00:17:41.26\00:17:43.73 really angry their jugular sort of sticks out and their face 00:17:43.76\00:17:46.33 goes red. That's what the word enraged means. And with 00:17:46.36\00:17:49.66 the woman, or the church, and went to make war with the rest 00:17:49.70\00:17:52.33 of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and the 00:17:52.37\00:17:57.77 testimony of Jesus. So God identifies his true 00:17:57.81\00:18:00.81 people as in the days right through they were faithful to 00:18:00.84\00:18:05.95 Jesus and faithful to His commandments. In fact in verse 00:18:05.98\00:18:14.36 12 of the same chapter, this is Revelation 12:12 it says, 00:18:14.39\00:18:17.63 Therefor rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! Which 00:18:17.66\00:18:23.30 would indicate that there's more inhabitants in the universe than 00:18:23.33\00:18:27.87 merely our world because the rest of them were taught 00:18:27.90\00:18:31.44 Therefore rejoice, O heavens, (plural) and you who dwell in 00:18:31.47\00:18:36.04 them. Why? Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the 00:18:36.08\00:18:39.88 sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, 00:18:39.91\00:18:43.25 because he know that he has but a short time. 00:18:43.28\00:18:45.82 Really the only logical explanation that I think that 00:18:45.85\00:18:49.19 I think that you can give to the situation that we're living in 00:18:49.22\00:18:54.26 the world today, I mean. You tune into the television and 00:18:54.30\00:18:58.27 radio, newspaper and it's the biggest tornado, the most 00:18:58.30\00:19:01.87 destructive cyclone, the worst floods, (and fires) and the 00:19:01.90\00:19:08.61 most terrible fires. In other words these adjectives are 00:19:08.64\00:19:10.85 continually being used to describe events that are 00:19:10.88\00:19:14.58 happening today in the very days that we live and describing 00:19:14.62\00:19:20.46 events that have never happened like that from the fir...Earth 00:19:20.49\00:19:23.49 quakes. There's always been earth quakes, but there's never 00:19:23.53\00:19:25.96 been an earth quake like we are experiencing today. 00:19:25.99\00:19:28.06 And there's never been as many. (Correct) That's the point, 00:19:28.10\00:19:31.67 there's never been as many but there's also never been as huge 00:19:31.70\00:19:36.24 earth quakes (and destructive). 00:19:36.27\00:19:39.21 Yes. And so as we read here the Bible is saying as the devil 00:19:39.24\00:19:43.71 realizes that time is coming to an end and that Jesus, you know, 00:19:43.75\00:19:48.52 is about to return, with a fury of desperation he tries to take 00:19:48.55\00:19:57.59 as many people, kill as many people and destroy their lives 00:19:57.63\00:20:00.40 as he possibly can. 00:20:00.43\00:20:01.76 Because in doing so he gets people to not want to know God. 00:20:01.80\00:20:05.60 When destruction and things come up many people say where is God? 00:20:05.63\00:20:10.27 He must not exist. So if he can bring these things upon people 00:20:10.31\00:20:15.24 he makes them unready for Jesus' return. 00:20:15.28\00:20:17.18 Yes there's a statement over here in the book of Job too 00:20:17.21\00:20:24.79 Rosemary I think is very interesting on this very point. 00:20:24.82\00:20:28.12 Job 38. That's an interesting chapter actually. If you haven't 00:20:28.16\00:20:33.70 read Job 38 I'd like to encourage you to do it. It answers some of these 00:20:33.73\00:20:38.23 questions. 00:20:38.27\00:20:39.60 God says to Job, where were you when I laid the foundations of 00:20:39.63\00:20:41.57 of the earth? And so forth. But here in Job 38:11, it says: 00:20:41.60\00:20:46.91 In other words, we can be encouraged by the fact that the 00:20:56.12\00:20:59.55 devil does not have absolute power and God... this boundary 00:20:59.59\00:21:06.06 just like, you know, the story of Job himself where the Lord 00:21:06.09\00:21:09.10 said you can do anything to Job but you can't take his life. 00:21:09.13\00:21:12.43 And the devil tried everything he could to try to discourage 00:21:12.47\00:21:17.14 Job, but Job was faithful and I think that once again as he 00:21:17.17\00:21:21.84 points out, thus far you may come but no further, the text 00:21:21.88\00:21:27.62 says. He says that for everything on 00:21:27.65\00:21:28.98 this earth; situations that we are living in even the water 00:21:29.02\00:21:32.39 coming on the earth. It can't come farther than what God will 00:21:32.42\00:21:36.16 allow. 00:21:36.19\00:21:37.53 Yes. And then we see how, you know, we've been talking about 00:21:37.56\00:21:41.13 the cosmos and the universe, the fight that began in heaven, then 00:21:41.16\00:21:46.84 the world fight, but also there's a fight going on inside 00:21:46.87\00:21:50.24 every person's heart. That's right. And it says here... then 00:21:50.27\00:21:55.84 we see how the devil brings this very real battle into everyone's 00:21:55.88\00:22:00.62 life. We've all been inside of us. A part of our nature that 00:22:00.65\00:22:07.16 is like Herod's. You know, we're talking about Herod. Because 00:22:07.19\00:22:10.99 what evil Herod did is not just unique to Herod. No that's right 00:22:11.03\00:22:16.87 We all have that part of our nature. It may not be as 00:22:16.90\00:22:19.53 developed thankfully as Herod's was, but nevertheless we all 00:22:19.57\00:22:24.07 have a part of us that responds to evil. These evils in the 00:22:24.11\00:22:32.11 world appeal to people. That's why when it comes to getting 00:22:32.15\00:22:35.78 people to attend sports and things that are not of 00:22:35.82\00:22:40.92 really eternal consequence, you have no problems. 00:22:40.96\00:22:43.73 It's very easy for us as human beings because we're in the 00:22:43.76\00:22:49.76 great controversy, the devil has taken control of this human 00:22:49.80\00:22:53.37 heart through Adam and Eve giving in to his temptation. 00:22:53.40\00:22:57.51 It's very easy for us to have jealousy, to have envy, to have 00:22:57.54\00:23:04.58 malice towards people and bitterness, and all those nasty 00:23:04.61\00:23:08.38 characteristics because that's what the devil wants us to have 00:23:08.42\00:23:13.56 and that's his nature. Whereas because Christ came, because 00:23:13.59\00:23:19.09 Jesus came and died for us He has actually given us the 00:23:19.13\00:23:21.70 opportunity to be set free from that and to regain God's 00:23:21.73\00:23:26.67 character which Adam and Eve had at the beginning. And that's 00:23:26.70\00:23:30.44 what God wants for us all. He wants us to have the victory 00:23:30.47\00:23:32.87 over our evil character through the indwelling of the Holy 00:23:32.91\00:23:37.91 Spirit. And we can have that. But as we are in this world 00:23:37.95\00:23:42.02 we allow the devil to have that control. It's only through God 00:23:42.05\00:23:47.96 that we can have any victory over that. 00:23:47.99\00:23:50.33 You know, I like that text in Philippians chapter 4 and verse 00:23:50.36\00:23:54.93 8 where it says: Finally brethren, whatever things are 00:23:54.96\00:24:01.27 true, you know, whatever things are noble, whatever things are 00:24:01.30\00:24:07.11 just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, 00:24:07.14\00:24:11.98 whatever things are of good report, if there's any virtue 00:24:12.01\00:24:14.82 and if there's any praise, Paul tells us to think on these 00:24:14.85\00:24:20.19 things. And the more we think about the very things that you 00:24:20.22\00:24:24.39 were talking about, the evil, the carnal, the negative, the 00:24:24.43\00:24:29.93 more we become like it. All of us have a bias that way. It's 00:24:29.96\00:24:34.90 easy to go that way. But God doesn't want us to dwell upon 00:24:34.94\00:24:40.78 those things. But if we think about the pure, the good, the 00:24:40.81\00:24:45.98 wholesome then we become like that. 00:24:46.01\00:24:48.05 They have found through science now that has an impact on our 00:24:48.08\00:24:52.52 minds and on our whole being to change us. If we think on 00:24:52.55\00:24:58.43 those good things it can change our bad attitudes into good 00:24:58.46\00:25:03.16 ones. I have two verses that I really find very important to me 00:25:03.20\00:25:08.30 in my life. And it's Ephesians chapter 4 verses 31 and 32. So 00:25:08.34\00:25:16.14 well go from 31 and 32. So Ephesians 4:31-32. And it says: 00:25:16.18\00:25:22.38 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger clamor, and evil speaking be put 00:25:22.42\00:25:31.89 away from you, with all malice. And be ye kind one to another, 00:25:31.93\00:25:36.26 tenderhearted, forgiving one another just as God in Christ 00:25:36.30\00:25:40.74 also forgave you. So this is basically what you were just 00:25:40.77\00:25:44.37 saying, think on these good things as Paul writes in 00:25:44.41\00:25:49.01 Philippians, here in Ephesians he's saying the same thing but 00:25:49.04\00:25:52.31 in a different way. Leave all those negative things behind 00:25:52.35\00:25:55.35 all those evil traits of character and let God put 00:25:55.38\00:25:59.99 those good things in you. 00:26:00.02\00:26:01.49 Yes, you know that statement, be kind to one another. You know 00:26:01.52\00:26:07.93 in families and in life how much better it would be if we were 00:26:07.96\00:26:14.14 kind to one another. It would be a happy place. 00:26:14.17\00:26:15.50 Well it would be. Forgiving one another. Of course, you know, 00:26:15.54\00:26:21.28 all of us do the wrong things and sometimes people 00:26:21.31\00:26:24.95 misinterpret what we're doing. They put an interpretation 00:26:24.98\00:26:29.98 which is not 00:26:30.02\00:26:31.35 correct, but formulate an attitude and these things 00:26:31.39\00:26:37.93 develop. But God tells us that He pointed out, Rosemary, by His 00:26:37.96\00:26:41.50 grace and through His power God can give us victory over sin and 00:26:41.53\00:26:46.43 over malice and over being critical and over those 00:26:46.47\00:26:50.81 attributes that make bitterness and anger and clamor and evil 00:26:50.84\00:26:57.38 speaking. All of those things we can get victory over. I think 00:26:57.41\00:27:02.45 that's the exciting thing about it. The Gospel isn't that really 00:27:02.48\00:27:07.02 when you think about it. The Gospel is not just a feeling you 00:27:07.06\00:27:10.73 know that we're Christians and it's a theory. No, no, no, no, 00:27:10.76\00:27:13.40 It's a living experience. 00:27:13.43\00:27:14.76 The Gospel changes lives. If it doesn't change your life, you 00:27:14.80\00:27:18.93 haven't really got the Gospel. 00:27:18.97\00:27:22.00 That's the good news. That's the exciting news. As we summarize 00:27:22.04\00:27:27.84 Rosemary, God doesn't want us to have the nature of Herod. 00:27:27.88\00:27:31.18 That's right. He wants us to have the nature of Christ and 00:27:31.21\00:27:35.38 He promises that two-thirds of the angels on His side and the 00:27:35.42\00:27:38.59 Holy Spirit and the Godhead, that we can live a life of 00:27:38.62\00:27:42.09 victory and overcoming. 00:27:42.12\00:27:43.93 That's right. So I hope that in today's lesson, today's 00:27:43.96\00:27:48.06 stories that you have learnt that God wants to change you 00:27:48.10\00:27:51.47 See you next time. 00:27:51.50\00:28:28.34
