During our last program, I
was sharing about my response

to what I believed
was God's call to me

to pray an hour a day.

This was to
correct my backsliding

and turn me around

but it seemed so terribly long
and next to impossible to me.

And on that first morning,

I sat at my
computer at 8 o'clock

and began, I was gonna
type out my prayer to the Lord.

And something--
this was something

that I've never done before

I was gonna type it
out like a letter to God.

So what I did was
I covered the clock

so that I
wouldn't be watching it.

And at the Lord's
leading the prayer developed

that morning in
the following order,

praise was the opening segment

then it was
followed by repentance,

intersession and supplication.

And when I finished
pouring out my heart to God

and I couldn't think
of another thing to pray

then I was going to
see what God was doing.

So I thought how much longer

that I have to go
before my hour was complete

what else was there to
talk about at the moment

and thinking perhaps
that 45 minutes had passed.

I peeked into the sticky note
on the clock to check the time

and it was
already a quarter past 10,

I had spent 2 hours and
15 minutes with the Lord.

Amazing.

And as I typed the
words in Jesus' name, amen

that still small voice
of the Lord interrupted

catching me totally
off guard saying this,

"Be still and
know that I am God."

I know the Holy Spirit

will never impress
anything upon our mind

that is not in perfect agreement

with God's council in the Bible.

And those words were a
direct quote of Psalm 46:10
00:03:34.22\00:03:39.82
which says, "Be still,
and know that I am God,
00:03:39.85\00:03:44.67
I will be exalted
among the nations,
00:03:44.70\00:03:49.21
I will be exalted in the earth!"
00:03:49.24\00:03:52.52
Well, you can imagine
I froze in my position
00:03:55.12\00:04:00.48
with my fingers
poised on the keyboard
00:04:00.51\00:04:03.27
then I began to
doubt was that really
00:04:03.30\00:04:06.30
God's command to be
still or was it my imagination.

And another distant thought
came drifting into my mind

then I frantically asked,

"Oh, Lord, is this
You or is this me?"

And then yet another thought

and then again I
questioned the source

"Lord, please, is
this You or is this me?"

And in the past I had
often claimed John 10:27,

which is-- this
is where Jesus said,

"My sheep hear My voice,

and I know them,
and they follow Me."

And I also claimed
John 10:5, where He said,

"Yet they will by no
means follow a stranger,

but will flee from him,
00:04:50.34\00:04:51.93
for they do not know
the voice of strangers."

I had-- I had
prayed this saying,

"Oh, Father,
thank You Lord Jesus,

that I know Your
voice thank You Lord Jesus,

that I'll never follow
the voice of a stranger.

And now the idea that the Lord

wanted to share
a thought with me

during my prayer
time was unbelievable.

Suddenly the
thought flashed into my mind
00:05:16.16\00:05:20.17
"I will teach you to
quit interrupting in the
00:05:20.20\00:05:23.02
spiritual realm as well
as in the physical realm."
00:05:23.05\00:05:26.44
Write what I speak to you that
you may take note of it often.

Well, with trepidation
I typed out the thoughts
00:05:31.23\00:05:35.67
being so strongly
impressed upon my mind
00:05:35.70\00:05:38.11
And they only
amounted to three sentences.
00:05:38.14\00:05:41.59
And I ended with
this command, look it up,
00:05:41.62\00:05:45.56
searching the
Bible I found scriptures
00:05:45.59\00:05:48.02
that supported and explained
00:05:48.05\00:05:50.62
what I now believed
were His divine thoughts.

And I sat back in satisfaction
00:05:53.23\00:05:55.23
that my loving Father had
given me instruction to heed.
00:05:55.26\00:05:59.23
I didn't really
expect this to happen
00:05:59.63\00:06:01.99
in the same manner on the
following morning, but it did.

God again impressed
His thoughts upon my mind.

This time it was
only two sentences

but they were
powerful reassurance

that it was His
still small voice

impressing His
thoughts upon my mind

as we talk about

Now JD was working out of town

and we regularly called
each other throughout the day.

And of course I was so excited
about this new prayer privilege

that I just had to
share my joy with him.

He didn't say
much about it at first

but then after several days

of listening to
my bubbling reports

he made his feelings understood.

He tenderly said,
"Honey, please don't tell

anyone else that
you're hearing from God

they will think you're crazy.

Well, within a few
weeks JD was convinced

that God indeed was
impressing thoughts upon my mind

during times at prayer.

Then my sweet
husband questioned me saying,

"I pray throughout the day,
why haven't I ever heard God?"

And I simply
answer him by asking

"Well, have you ever listened?"

And a few days later, JD called

and cautiously shared
a new prayer experience.

Wondering if the thoughts that
came to his mind were from God.

We're going to examine

what happened to him

But I think when we get

God was definitely giving him

unexpected word of correction.

talks about hearing,

I don't believe this
type of communication

is an exclusive
privilege offered to just a few.

JD and I are no more
special than anyone else.

God is a loving Father and
He wants to teach His children

if He could just
get their attention

and their cooperation to listen,

He wants to teach us

that prayer is a
two-way communication.

After all, God's
purpose is to lead us.

One of my favorite
scriptures is Isaiah 48:17.

And this is what it says,

"Thus says the
Lord, your Redeemer,

the Holy One of Israel,
00:08:53.62\00:08:55.81
'I am the Lord your God,
Who teaches you to profit,

Who leads you by
the way you should go.'"

If this idea of hearing God's
voice His still small voice,

seems a little far fetch to you.

Now some raise
their hands with timidity

as if they were
embarrassed to admit it.

But before I learned
to press into His presence

those precious occasions
happen to me infrequently.

When I allow this practice
of pressing in type prayer

to be crowded
out at my schedule,

in other words, when
I'm shamefully too busy

to spend substantial
time with the Lord in prayer.

I don't perceive
His still small voice

but it became almost a daily
occurrence over the many years

that I faithfully
practiced this teaching.

Occasionally, even when I
was being still before the Lord

He trusted me with His silence.

To teach me He was still there,

even though I didn't
sense His still small voice.

Don't be fearful of
trying this biblical practice

the Lord's voice.

In today's culture, we
aren't accustomed to thinking

with us on a personal level.

And we need to know how

so that we don't get caught
up in counterfeit teachings

or be so fearful that we
avoid the true experience.

So the Holy Spirit is our helper

didn't even reveal the location.

I had already learned

that God tells me just
a little bit at a time.

This was months in advance

There are times when I
had been in prayer with Him

feeling satisfied about myself

and the direction
in which I'm heading.

When God has stunned me
with a word of correction

and then there also
had been times and days

when I'm just really crestfallen

and I feel like I'm a
dismal disappointment to Him.

And my loving Father
has surprised me with words,

of encouragement and assurance.

been something I have expected,

I have come to
trust these thoughts

being impressed upon my

and in addition to praying

an hour each morning.

over the past several years
I've let this practice slip.

Instead of daily
pressing into His presence,

it became a weekly effort.

In some months it
was not even that often.

You know we work
four, 10 hour days

each week here at
3ABN Broadcasting Network.

And we travel
most weekends to speak

at camp meetings or
church revivals and retreats

and that has interrupted
the rhythm of this practice

only because of I've allowed it.

I'm not proud of this fact.

And don't
misunderstand what I'm saying,

I continue to pray
often throughout the day

but it's different,

it's not pressing
into His presence.

A 15 minute prayer is
just not as satisfying.

And I don't hear from God

when I rush in
before Him in this fashion.

And to answer
the obvious question,

yes, I lose ground when
I'm not practicing this.

I think that's called
backsliding, isn't it?

Prior to taping this series,
I felt that it was necessary

to return to the practice of
praying an hour in the morning.

And praise God,
He is reawakening

my passion for His presence.

Prayer is a vital life source.

It is the breath of the
soul and how refreshing it is

to be deep breathing again

rather than just the
occasional spiritual gasping

More importantly, I cannot tell

Let's return our focus to

what happened
that September of 1999

when the Lord first led
me to pray in this manner.

If someone spends an
hour with God each morning,

and learn to sit at
His feet and listen.

Wouldn't you think
that she could expect

greater spiritual power

to overcome the
obstacles of sinful flesh?

Well, in my case it
just wasn't happening

at least not for
the first two weeks.

And on the 15th morning
of my new prayer experience,

I awoke rather late
and I opened the windows

to the best weather
of September can muster.

The air was
crisp and golden leaves

were on the
ground moist with dew

and they reflected
the sun's sparkling rays.

Now normally this scene
would have exhilarated me

but I was feeling
down in the mouth,

dissatisfied with
my spiritual progress.

After opening my
prayer with praise,

I began my ritual of repentance.

And as I confess my sins,

I pleaded with God
for more spiritual power.

And the still small voice of
the Lord broke through saying,

"All of My promises

Isn't that what 2
Corinthians 1:20 says?

It says, "All of the
promises of God in Him,

Yes, and in Him Amen,

to the glory of God through us."

These words struck
like a thunderbolt.

Of course, God had proven
to me several years earlier

how affirming His
word, in other words,

how claiming and
confessing His promises.

Praying them back to Him,
speaking them over my life,

that was the way to
plug into His power source.

So, that September morning,

I added a generous
portion of life affirmations

from scripture
to my daily prayer.

And immediately
I was transformed,

endued with power from on high.

The struggle of my
flesh was banished.
