You know, and, of course,
we're not sitting here saying

that we have the authority

and we've
attained some high level

we, of course, are
still being sanctified,

still going to the process
that every single day is a fight

to make pure choices.

But what kind of
things can we say to people

who are trying to get victory?

We're gonna talk about that.

But the first
question I wanna ask is about

our identity in Christ.

And so, the question then is,

why do many young people
and in people in general,

why is it that we
do not know who we are?
00:02:32.38\00:02:34.88
Let's start with that.

I think that we
don't know who we are
00:02:36.62\00:02:39.42
because we allow
whatever anyone says
00:02:39.45\00:02:44.03
that we are to
become what we are.
00:02:44.06\00:02:47.33
We embrace people
pushing different identities

upon ourselves.

Okay.

And we buy into them, you
know, you have media saying that

"You are this.
00:02:56.10\00:02:57.44
You're a certain demographic
00:02:57.47\00:02:58.81
so this is how you should be."

You have, you know, parents
or people around you saying,
00:03:00.98\00:03:04.31
okay, you know, for
example that, you know,
00:03:04.35\00:03:07.52
when you picked up a
basket ball when you're little,

"You're gonna be a
basket ball player".
00:03:09.05\00:03:10.39
You know what I'm saying?

Or a different
things and it's kind of like
00:03:11.79\00:03:13.25
that's in your mind
and you kind of play

that thing out,
kind of, subconsciously.

So I think a lot of the times
that we kind of get away from

who we really are in Christ is
00:03:21.16\00:03:22.50
because we buy
into the other things

that society around
us tells us who we are.

I definitely agree with that.

I know one of my
Oakwood sister Serena Golden

just preached a
sermon this past weekend

and she brought out
the point of the women
00:03:35.24\00:03:39.68
caught in adultery is identified
00:03:39.71\00:03:42.52
as the women caught in her vice.
00:03:42.55\00:03:46.22
And so many times we
take one the identity
00:03:46.25\00:03:50.66
of what our vices are
instead of the identity
00:03:50.69\00:03:54.53
that Christ gave her.
00:03:54.56\00:03:56.26
Because at the end of that thing
00:03:56.30\00:03:57.83
Christ called her to
Himself and said "Sin no more,
00:03:57.87\00:04:02.04
so your vice no longer
has the victory over you".

So it's that, it's
that accepting the wrong
00:04:05.04\00:04:08.88
instead of accepting the victory
00:04:08.91\00:04:10.55
that Christ has given us.

That's so, that's so
powerful, what you both said.

Because in
reality you have to find

who you are in Jesus, you know.

know, I think part of these

and we struggle with identity is

because our filters are broken.

You know, you know,
if you go into a house,

most houses or most
homes have air filters.

So that things toxins,
things of that atmosphere

don't just come
in through your vent,

and intake of your
house, and pollute your home.
00:04:35.27\00:04:38.34
And so we have to, our
filters in society are broken
00:04:38.37\00:04:42.98
so anything that comes at
us there is nothing blocking
00:04:43.01\00:04:46.31
and there is nothing
shifting through those images
00:04:46.35\00:04:49.45
those subconscious, you know,
00:04:49.48\00:04:52.59
types that say you
should be like this, if you are,
00:04:52.62\00:04:56.12
you know, light
skin and long hair,
00:04:56.16\00:04:57.93
you're beautiful,
if you're dark skin
00:04:57.96\00:04:59.39
and short hair you're not.
00:04:59.43\00:05:00.80
If you come from
this family, you're good.
00:05:00.83\00:05:02.56
If you go to this
school, you're not.
00:05:02.60\00:05:04.00
And so we take on
all those filters.
00:05:04.03\00:05:06.23
So I think a part of that
we do struggle with that daily,
00:05:06.27\00:05:08.77
is because we don't
have the right filters
00:05:08.80\00:05:11.21
and so we need to filter
our identity through Jesus.
00:05:11.24\00:05:14.74
We've to find it in Jesus
00:05:14.78\00:05:16.11
and then allow
Jesus to be that one
00:05:16.14\00:05:18.38
that's take the images and
says, yes, yes, that's you,
00:05:18.41\00:05:22.42
or, no, no, that's not
you, you're my daughter,
00:05:22.45\00:05:24.72
or you're my son.
00:05:24.75\00:05:27.62
So again, so let's
to make that clear then,
00:05:27.66\00:05:29.36
what is or who it is
Jesus say that we are,
00:05:29.39\00:05:31.46
you know, we're in Him?
00:05:31.49\00:05:33.83
We all, He says, we're
His children, first off.
00:05:33.86\00:05:37.73
That we are
redeemed and He draws Him,
00:05:37.77\00:05:43.37
draws us onto Himself, you know,
00:05:43.41\00:05:45.17
and He takes us as His
own and we are not the sins
00:05:45.21\00:05:49.48
that we commit because
He has died for our sins.

And so a lot of times
what ends up happening is

that a lot of people don't know
that Jesus died for their sins
00:05:56.45\00:05:59.72
and that they're not
the sins that they commit,

and so they
identify, like she said,
00:06:01.99\00:06:03.86
with those sins
instead of knowing
00:06:03.89\00:06:06.19
that God has called them
to be something different.

So I think that's
where the identity thing

kind of gets confused.

You know what I love
what you said about identity?

Because it's so true and we
can learn from Jesus' example

of how God gave Him His identity

before Jesus ever
went into ministry.

God told him
who He was, He said,
00:06:26.21\00:06:28.18
this is my son and
whom I'm well pleased.

So as He began his
ministry, even though, you know,

He was attacked by, you know,
His community, His home town,
00:06:33.66\00:06:38.89
you know, people in the
church, people around Him

and then even His own
disciples and friends,
00:06:42.33\00:06:44.57
He still know who He was.
00:06:44.60\00:06:46.67
And so the blessing is
that God's tells us who we are.

I needed you in
your mothers womb,

I created you from
then, so you're my child,

you're my son,
you're my daughter,

and so there is beauty
in being able to identify

that in that way.

And then if you've
messed up, if, you know,

you haven't always identify

what the
identity Christ gives you,

the Bible says in Isaiah 53,

that He was bruised for
our iniquity, that He was,

you know, crucified
for our transgression

so then He takes on
our negative identity,
00:07:15.90\00:07:19.23
nails that to the cross,
00:07:19.27\00:07:20.60
and give us a
new identity in Him.

Yeah.

I think what's so cool
about knowing your identity

in Christ is you don't
have to prove that to anybody.

You know who you are, you know,
Jesus Christ was tempted in

and Satan tried to tell
him, you know, you can do this,

you can do
this, and he was like,

"No, no, no, wait.
00:07:39.49\00:07:40.82
I don't have to do that
because I know who I am".
00:07:40.86\00:07:42.79
So He's really free
and He's liberating.

You know, people think
when you are a Christian,

you know, it's so
constrained and, you know,

you can't this or that.

No, no, you're
free, you're liberating,

you can do
whatever you wanna do.

But you choose not, you know,
because you know who you are

and you know what
makes your creator happy

and what make you
happy subsequently.

to what it really looks like

having, what is, you know,

identity be in Christ,

what kind of purpose that
gives you now to your life?

Once you realize and, I
guess I'll put it this way.

Jesus like she said,
got His identity for God,

and He had a sense of
confidence in His identity,

not a worldly confidence that
we have but a God confidence.

He knew what His
mission was, what He came to do,

what He was set out
to do, and so the...

What would normally,
not that He was a human

because He was human but not,

but what would
normally trip up someone else,

He knew His identity
in God, in His father

and so He didn't have to
go out and prove anything.

He already knew what it
was that He needed to do.

And so I think that
word, the sense of purpose,

like she said, comes from
God giving you that identity

and from that
identity you understand

what your mission is,
what's your purpose is,

and you set out to do that.

And adding on
purpose just, you know,

as creatures from
God who created us,

we are His children our
purpose is to worship Him.

You know, our purpose is here
to glorify His name, you know,

and that begins to, again,
00:09:18.65\00:09:19.99
reshape the
reason you do everything,

and that shapes your
choices and your decisions,

and everything kind
of comes out of that,

and even gives you,
then God can kind of hone in

and then give you directed
purpose for your specific life

and what you have to do for Him.

In that and once again,
Christ, our ultimate example,

did that when He was speaking,
when Pilate was speaking to Him

and challenging Him to
show who He is and to speak on

who He was.

There was no need for Him
to prove anything to anybody.

Christ said that He did not,

His life is not being taken
from Him but He lay it down.

And so when Pilate
was like, "If you don't,

if you don't speak to me

I have the
power to crucify you".

And then Christ speaks
and says, "You have no power,

unless my Father
has given it to you."

So once again He is
identifying that my God,

that my Father has a purpose
for my life and the things

that I'm going
through, no matter how painful,

no matter how hard,
no matter how difficult,

physical bruises,
spiritual bruises,

mental bruises,

I may have to go
through those things

and it's not God that's
put in the affliction on me

but Christ has a
purpose do it all,

even Desire of Ages

the first
chapter speaks about it.

And it first quotes
that chapter Isaiah 53

and then it goes into
say that, okay, so men failed

and we were first created by God

so we're His creatures,
right, we're His creation.

But because of the fault,

Christ knew that
was going to happen

and so since
Christ came down as man

and became one with humanity,

we are now more
joined together with God,

then we would have been,

if we were to just
being His creations.

So I am now a Royal Priesthood,

and that's how it kind of ties
back into our lives when we,

various temptations

choice that we may feel like,

I'm gonna let or forgo
something else that I wanna do.

Oh, look if you
know who you are,

if you know you're identity,
if you know where you're going,

then it's okay to do that

because you know
that's your head is in Christ,

that He has repaired

look at my life, and I'm,

You know, I didn't get a
degree in theology from Oakwood.

I started out as a teacher,

teaching first
and second graders,

and now I'm able to
minister to my college,
00:12:25.81\00:12:29.24
to these college
students and minister in a way
00:12:29.28\00:12:32.11
that I never
would have imagined.
00:12:32.15\00:12:33.58
But when I was a
teenager, when I was, you know,
00:12:33.62\00:12:36.55
going through
things and, you know,
00:12:36.58\00:12:38.42
and wrestling with
making pure choices,
00:12:38.45\00:12:41.06
I never imagined that
God would take me to a place
00:12:41.09\00:12:43.32
where He would be
able to use the testimony
00:12:43.36\00:12:45.79
from those choices to be
able to, to be able to empower
00:12:45.83\00:12:49.23
and help other young people.
00:12:49.26\00:12:50.87
And the hurt that I experienced,
00:12:50.90\00:12:52.87
the pain that I
may have experienced,
00:12:52.90\00:12:55.00
those trials and
tribulations all prepared me
00:12:55.04\00:12:57.94
for where I am now
00:12:57.97\00:12:59.31
and wherever else
God is gonna take me.

And that is what
makes things beautiful.

And the Bible says,
"All things work together

for the good of
them that love the Lord."

It's not just all good
things it's everything,

everything you've been through,

no matter what
you've been through,

even if you've
been sexually impure,

even if you may have
been a victim of rape,

even if you may have been

the perpetrator of
some of these things.

There is a newness,
a restoration in God

that will take
to an expected end

which is beautiful in
God's, you know, hands.

watching and they wanna know

what does it look
like, though, you know.

and what is it look
like to really have a life

that has a victorious
life that is hid in Christ.

What should they expect?

I mean expect hardship.

Expect wrestling with the flesh.

Expect temptation

because now you have
openly chosen Christ.

So now the devil wasn't
happy. He's not pleased.

So he's gonna come at
you harder even before

because before when
you were in your stuff,

you know, you would
do it and Satan had you.

But now you are
like you're identifying

that as something

that I no longer
wanna take part of,

something that I no
