And we're back with "Books of the Book." 00:00:01.40\00:00:02.77 We're studying our last Chapter in 2 Peter. 00:00:02.80\00:00:05.71 Dr. Shepherd, wasn't there more in verse 15? 00:00:05.74\00:00:09.45 Yes. Would you read verse 15 again for us? 00:00:09.48\00:00:12.33 "And consider that the longsuffering 00:00:12.36\00:00:14.19 of our Lord is salvation, 00:00:14.22\00:00:15.87 as also our beloved brother Paul, 00:00:15.90\00:00:18.20 according to the wisdom given to him, 00:00:18.23\00:00:20.60 has written to you." 00:00:20.63\00:00:22.00 Okay. So the first part of this, we already said, 00:00:22.03\00:00:24.95 kind of quickly but we stated that, 00:00:24.98\00:00:27.26 we are supposed to count the patience of God. 00:00:27.29\00:00:29.74 Remember this is His slowness to anger. 00:00:29.77\00:00:32.21 He's patiently waiting for people to repent. 00:00:32.24\00:00:35.86 He says, count the patience of our Lord as salvation. 00:00:35.89\00:00:40.18 If you repent you will be saved, you see. 00:00:40.21\00:00:42.92 And so his patience waiting 00:00:42.95\00:00:45.37 is his opening of the door for us to be saved. 00:00:45.40\00:00:49.93 Some people wait too long, 00:00:49.96\00:00:52.36 you know, they wait too long until it's too late. 00:00:52.39\00:00:55.86 Now the Apostle Paul says, "Today is the day of salvation." 00:00:55.89\00:00:59.03 Don't wait to give your life to Jesus. 00:00:59.06\00:01:02.93 It's never too late as long as there's life, 00:01:02.96\00:01:05.63 there's hope but it's never too early 00:01:05.66\00:01:10.32 to make things right with God. 00:01:10.35\00:01:12.34 So he goes on after that 00:01:12.37\00:01:14.13 he says, "Just our beloved brother Paul 00:01:14.16\00:01:18.12 also wrote to you according to the wisdom given to him." 00:01:18.15\00:01:25.30 Now the main reason that he inserts Paul's name here, 00:01:25.33\00:01:32.16 you know, he puts Paul in here 00:01:32.19\00:01:35.12 he's going to answer a problem 00:01:35.15\00:01:37.15 and that's he's gonna come to in verse 16. 00:01:37.18\00:01:42.11 And why does he mention Paul after all? 00:01:42.14\00:01:44.45 Yeah, after all why mentioned Paul, 00:01:44.48\00:01:46.47 why not just, you know keep going? 00:01:46.50\00:01:48.10 Well, maybe we should read verse 16 as well. 00:01:48.13\00:01:51.05 Verse 16? Yeah. 00:01:51.08\00:01:52.61 "As also in all his epistles, 00:01:52.64\00:01:54.83 speaking in them of these things 00:01:54.86\00:01:56.85 in which are some things hard to understood, 00:01:56.88\00:01:59.65 which untaught and unstable people 00:01:59.68\00:02:02.23 twist to their own destruction 00:02:02.26\00:02:04.44 as they do also the rest of the scriptures." 00:02:04.47\00:02:07.28 All right. 00:02:07.31\00:02:09.43 Now let's just think for a moment 00:02:09.46\00:02:11.21 as to the reason God gave the scriptures. 00:02:11.24\00:02:17.09 We've studied this before really 00:02:17.12\00:02:19.01 how all the scriptures are inspired 00:02:19.04\00:02:22.68 and the prophesies or the soak word 00:02:22.71\00:02:25.79 they're the foundation for our faith. 00:02:25.82\00:02:28.43 They are the light that guides us on the path 00:02:28.46\00:02:32.73 and they give us hope and solve-- 00:02:32.76\00:02:35.78 they are the promises the precious promises of God 00:02:35.81\00:02:38.84 wherein we find the promises 00:02:38.87\00:02:43.02 that point to the building of character. 00:02:43.05\00:02:45.44 It's so kind like book ends, 00:02:45.47\00:02:46.84 you know, he's been talking about the scriptures. 00:02:46.87\00:02:48.84 Talks about them in the beginning 00:02:48.87\00:02:50.24 and he talks about them at the end. 00:02:50.27\00:02:52.33 And the scriptures are meant to grow us. 00:02:52.36\00:02:57.85 They're meant to grow us. 00:02:57.88\00:03:00.15 It's really sad when people fight over the scriptures. 00:03:00.18\00:03:06.25 You know, when they use them to jab somebody, 00:03:06.28\00:03:10.62 to make a point or they use them to, 00:03:10.65\00:03:14.84 you know, clap it somebody over the head 00:03:14.87\00:03:17.81 or they use them to keep people away. 00:03:17.84\00:03:22.06 There's any variety of ways that people misuse the Bible 00:03:22.09\00:03:28.58 and the Apostle Peter here you know, wants is to know 00:03:28.61\00:03:34.20 that we're not supposed to misuse them 00:03:34.23\00:03:36.82 like they did the Apostle Paul's writings. 00:03:36.85\00:03:40.22 Now some people like to suggest here 00:03:40.25\00:03:42.57 that Peter himself had difficulty understanding 00:03:42.60\00:03:46.72 what Paul wrote. 00:03:46.75\00:03:49.01 Well, I dare say, that the man who wrote 1 Peter, 00:03:49.04\00:03:53.35 that we have seen as, as profound theology 00:03:53.38\00:03:57.17 as the Apostle Paul. 00:03:57.20\00:03:58.84 I don't know that he had difficulty understanding 00:03:58.87\00:04:01.77 what Paul was writing. 00:04:01.80\00:04:04.27 Instead he likely penned these lines 00:04:04.30\00:04:08.82 because there were some people 00:04:08.85\00:04:10.22 who were misrepresenting Paul and twisting what he had to say. 00:04:10.25\00:04:16.32 And he says the twist the rest of these scriptures as well. 00:04:16.35\00:04:21.20 Okay, so he is writing to those who twist Paul 00:04:21.23\00:04:26.63 and maybe those who find Paul challenging. 00:04:26.66\00:04:31.16 Well, that might be any number of us 00:04:31.19\00:04:33.31 who read him and wonder, 00:04:33.34\00:04:35.85 you know, exactly what did he mean. 00:04:35.88\00:04:40.00 But Peter here refers to two groups people. 00:04:40.03\00:04:45.00 He says, he calls them the unlearned and unstable. 00:04:45.03\00:04:52.60 Kind of I said terminology, 00:04:52.63\00:04:55.70 my version says the ignorant and unstable. 00:04:55.73\00:05:00.15 Well, if you turn over to Chapter 2 verse 14, 00:05:00.18\00:05:02.56 would you read 2:14 for us? 00:05:02.59\00:05:06.45 "Having eyes full of adultery, 00:05:06.48\00:05:08.95 that cannot cease from sin, enticing unstable souls. 00:05:08.98\00:05:12.83 They have heart trained 00:05:12.86\00:05:14.23 in covetous practices in our cursed children." 00:05:14.26\00:05:17.96 All right. Now these are-- 00:05:17.99\00:05:19.36 This is the work of the false teachers 00:05:19.39\00:05:20.86 but you notice that we had there unstable souls, 00:05:20.89\00:05:24.20 is not what you're sinned. 00:05:24.23\00:05:25.60 Mind says unstable souls. 00:05:25.63\00:05:27.00 Unstable souls, is right. Unstable. 00:05:27.03\00:05:28.81 Yeah, this is the same people, 00:05:28.84\00:05:30.66 the people who are likely to be 00:05:30.69\00:05:32.15 let us stray by the false teachers. 00:05:32.18\00:05:35.07 This could be people young in a faith or others. 00:05:35.10\00:05:39.77 It might have trails of life 00:05:39.80\00:05:41.83 that just lead them to be unstable 00:05:41.86\00:05:45.07 and of course like a good Shepherd, 00:05:45.10\00:05:46.55 you're supposed to God and protect these people. 00:05:46.58\00:05:49.70 All right. 00:05:49.73\00:05:51.10 And so that leads us then to verses 17 and 18. 00:05:51.13\00:05:55.39 Let's read this one more time. 00:05:55.42\00:05:57.54 "You therefore, beloved, 00:05:57.57\00:05:58.94 since you know this beforehand, 00:05:58.97\00:06:00.90 beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, 00:06:00.93\00:06:04.76 being led away with the error of the wicked, 00:06:04.79\00:06:07.88 but grow in the grace 00:06:07.91\00:06:09.28 and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 00:06:09.31\00:06:11.54 To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen." 00:06:11.57\00:06:16.26 All right, in contrast to what he's talked about 00:06:16.29\00:06:20.07 before verses 17 and 18, refer to Peters, 00:06:20.10\00:06:23.03 closing desire for the Christian to whom he writes, 00:06:23.06\00:06:26.93 he gives them two commands. 00:06:26.96\00:06:29.49 The first one is, the word God 00:06:29.52\00:06:31.69 and the other one is the word grow, God and grow. 00:06:31.72\00:06:36.74 Okay, so the word God is a term that is often used 00:06:36.77\00:06:42.04 a protecting or keeping something 00:06:42.07\00:06:45.52 even like keeping the commandments of God. 00:06:45.55\00:06:48.39 All right. 00:06:48.42\00:06:49.79 But interestingly enough here 00:06:49.82\00:06:51.28 in this passage it has no object. 00:06:51.31\00:06:53.26 He would say, keep, keep the commandments, 00:06:53.29\00:06:55.87 God the commandments or God something 00:06:55.90\00:06:58.66 but here there is no object list 00:06:58.69\00:07:02.00 and so it's more likely that the meaning is like beyond God. 00:07:02.03\00:07:05.86 Stand like a sentry, okay. 00:07:05.89\00:07:08.44 Clearly referring to watch enough for the false teachers. 00:07:08.47\00:07:11.36 So be on God, these false teachers 00:07:11.39\00:07:14.05 will want to mislead you and you need to be sober 00:07:14.08\00:07:16.73 and keep your wits about you. 00:07:16.76\00:07:19.62 The guarding has the affect 00:07:19.65\00:07:21.02 to protect them from being deceived. 00:07:21.05\00:07:24.78 So it is to keep there firmness of commitment, 00:07:24.81\00:07:28.66 ready and strong, okay. 00:07:28.69\00:07:31.53 God, what you've been trusted and stay strong and firm. 00:07:31.56\00:07:36.16 He actually uses the word firmness here 00:07:36.19\00:07:38.62 that you're won't fall from your firmness. 00:07:38.65\00:07:41.69 And that is the opposite of the verse 16 00:07:41.72\00:07:47.19 where it talks about being unstable and weak. 00:07:47.22\00:07:50.16 We're actually related terms in Greek. 00:07:50.19\00:07:53.32 So firmness versus weakness or this thing out. 00:07:53.35\00:07:57.18 I remember, I told you 00:07:57.21\00:07:58.58 that I go to the YMCA and lift weights, 00:07:58.61\00:08:00.20 I don't know, if you can tell. Okay. 00:08:00.23\00:08:03.81 I enjoyed a lot. 00:08:03.84\00:08:05.21 Actually it helps my cello playing 00:08:05.24\00:08:06.61 so I do better because the muscle tone is stronger. 00:08:06.64\00:08:09.38 And if you've never done weightlifting 00:08:09.41\00:08:11.35 you need to try it. 00:08:11.38\00:08:13.10 But the lifting of the weights, 00:08:13.13\00:08:17.72 remember I saw this shirt that said, 00:08:17.75\00:08:21.03 pain is weakness leaving the body. 00:08:21.06\00:08:23.74 So no pain, no gain, you lift these weights and it hurts them. 00:08:23.77\00:08:26.91 But it has wonderful effect on it. 00:08:26.94\00:08:28.89 He wants you to be firm on God like a good bodybuilder 00:08:28.92\00:08:33.46 who has been working out, okay. 00:08:33.49\00:08:35.34 And then the next word is the word to grow. 00:08:35.37\00:08:39.23 And there are two fore say of the grow. 00:08:39.26\00:08:42.38 Two things just supposed to focus on, okay. 00:08:42.41\00:08:44.60 The first one is he mentions grace and knowledge. 00:08:44.63\00:08:48.80 Grow and grace and in the knowledge 00:08:48.83\00:08:50.46 of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 00:08:50.49\00:08:52.87 He's used to go hand in hand in Christian experience. 00:08:52.90\00:08:56.81 This is all in the recent 00:08:56.84\00:08:58.21 of where Peter began in Chapter 2. 00:08:58.24\00:09:02.02 2 Peter 1:1-11, regarding growing the Christian life, 00:09:02.05\00:09:06.37 where you're ascending that ladder 00:09:06.40\00:09:09.30 those wonderful virtues that he is giving. 00:09:09.33\00:09:10.96 The guarding is focused outward. 00:09:10.99\00:09:13.05 So you're guarding against the false teachers he's saying. 00:09:13.08\00:09:16.63 And the growing is focused inward 00:09:16.66\00:09:18.90 towards stain and touch with Jesus 00:09:18.93\00:09:20.86 and becoming like Him. 00:09:20.89\00:09:22.71 So Peter ends with the doxology 00:09:22.74\00:09:24.73 were he praises Jesus, now and to the day of eternity. 00:09:24.76\00:09:31.98 So we've come to conclusion. Yeah. Let's have. 00:09:32.01\00:09:36.28 And in the conclusion we can probably be good for us 00:09:36.31\00:09:40.30 to review just a little bit about the theology 00:09:40.33\00:09:44.83 of these two beautiful books. 00:09:44.86\00:09:47.89 What are the main concepts in the Book of the 1 Peter 00:09:47.92\00:09:51.03 and main the concepts in the Book of 2 Peter. 00:09:51.06\00:09:54.60 Here's just a few ideas to ponder, okay. 00:09:54.63\00:09:57.71 First of all in 1 Peter. 00:09:57.74\00:10:00.42 God is focused on as our-- God is focused, 00:10:00.45\00:10:06.53 He's focused on our spiritual growth 00:10:06.56\00:10:08.76 and connection with Jesus Christ. 00:10:08.79\00:10:11.22 Jesus Christ is both the Savior of our life 00:10:11.25\00:10:14.47 and the great example for us to follow. 00:10:14.50\00:10:16.61 You remember that central chapter 2 00:10:16.64\00:10:18.68 and how it focused on 00:10:18.71\00:10:20.08 the example of Jesus and following Him. 00:10:20.11\00:10:22.64 Salvation is the gift of the God, 00:10:22.67\00:10:25.43 it is the new birth that He gives to you. 00:10:25.46\00:10:28.03 And it has consequences of our life, 00:10:28.06\00:10:32.38 holiness and submission. 00:10:32.41\00:10:35.09 We are upward facing and outward engaged 00:10:35.12\00:10:39.04 to draw others to our Lord by our life of holiness. 00:10:39.07\00:10:43.21 Our life is not to be wasted in pagan passion. 00:10:43.24\00:10:46.52 Number 4, suffering is real, but it is not forever. 00:10:46.55\00:10:52.90 It is a privilege to be linked with Christ, 00:10:52.93\00:10:55.86 suffering has He did. 00:10:55.89\00:10:58.92 5th Christian leadership, is about service. 00:10:58.95\00:11:03.81 Entered willingly carried out faithfully, 00:11:03.84\00:11:07.08 focused on following Christ example. 00:11:07.11\00:11:10.87 Those are some of the key ideas in the Book of 1 Peter, 00:11:10.90\00:11:14.52 when we come to 2 Peter, 00:11:14.55\00:11:16.60 we find again that God has provided 00:11:16.63\00:11:19.38 all we need for successful and growing Christian life. 00:11:19.41\00:11:24.34 And the best protection against evil 00:11:24.37\00:11:27.47 is to focus on what is good. 00:11:27.50\00:11:30.47 You focus on those growing elements of Christian faith 00:11:30.50\00:11:33.17 and he says, you'll never fall, you'll faultier, you know. 00:11:33.20\00:11:36.79 The false teacher will be like just bouncing off of you 00:11:36.82\00:11:41.69 because you're strong and firm in Christ. 00:11:41.72\00:11:44.69 And once the evil is real 00:11:44.72\00:11:47.39 and must not be minimize or underestimated. 00:11:47.42\00:11:50.97 Its power can ruin people's lives. 00:11:51.00\00:11:54.06 We must not lets such treats go on recognize or unrebuked. 00:11:54.09\00:11:59.59 Number 4, Jesus is coming back soon. 00:11:59.62\00:12:04.72 His coming isn't delayed, 00:12:04.75\00:12:06.15 God is just giving you time to get ready. 00:12:06.18\00:12:09.77 And number 5, And light of the beginning and end 00:12:09.80\00:12:13.31 we must live Holy and godly lives 00:12:13.34\00:12:16.47 and help others to get ready for our Lord soon return. 00:12:16.50\00:12:20.14 My friends, we've been talking 00:12:20.17\00:12:21.54 quite a while about from 2 Peter, 00:12:21.57\00:12:22.94 I hope you enjoyed the studies 00:12:22.97\00:12:25.34 and I hoped that the messages 00:12:25.37\00:12:26.90 that we have shared with you here, 00:12:26.93\00:12:30.01 are not simply something for your mind, 00:12:30.04\00:12:33.04 not simply ideas for your head 00:12:33.07\00:12:36.06 but they also spoken to you heart. 00:12:36.09\00:12:39.87 And that is you've heard these messages 00:12:39.90\00:12:42.47 it warmed your heart to turn towards Jesus 00:12:42.50\00:12:45.34 to be more faithful to Him, 00:12:45.37\00:12:47.09 maybe to help somebody else to come to know our Lord. 00:12:47.12\00:12:50.67 I thank you, for participating and opening your Bible with us 00:12:50.70\00:12:54.63 and I hope that you'll continue to open it everyday 00:12:54.66\00:12:57.76 and that God will richly bless your life. 00:12:57.79\00:13:01.42 And Dr. Shepherd, I also want to thank you 00:13:01.45\00:13:03.03 for coming all the way from the Andrews University 00:13:03.06\00:13:05.85 and helping us here with 1 and 2 Peter. 00:13:05.88\00:13:08.36 My privilege.
