Hello and welcome to "Books of the Book." 00:00:20.11\00:00:22.40 My name Deyvy Rodriguez and I'm very glad 00:00:22.43\00:00:24.37 that you're able to join us in this Bible study program. 00:00:24.40\00:00:26.99 We're studying the Books of 1 and 2 Peter. 00:00:27.02\00:00:29.28 And today, we conclude the 2nd Book of Peter. 00:00:29.31\00:00:32.53 With us is Dr. Tom Shepherd. 00:00:32.56\00:00:34.03 He comes from Andrews University. 00:00:34.06\00:00:35.99 Dr. Shepherd, welcome. Thank you. 00:00:36.02\00:00:37.84 I understand that you were a director in some-- 00:00:37.87\00:00:41.56 in the theological seminary there. 00:00:41.59\00:00:44.13 Tell us more this-- what you do there? 00:00:44.16\00:00:47.62 Well, I'm a professor of New Testament Interpretation, 00:00:47.65\00:00:50.62 but I've also been asked to be 00:00:50.65\00:00:52.83 the director of the PhD in Religion Program 00:00:52.86\00:00:56.96 and the ThD or Doctor of Theology program. 00:00:56.99\00:01:01.08 We have about 100 students in these two programs 00:01:01.11\00:01:05.32 and besides them we actually have 00:01:05.35\00:01:07.21 several other doctoral programs. 00:01:07.24\00:01:08.76 We have Doctor of Ministry program, 00:01:08.79\00:01:11.58 we have a new doctoral program in Archeology 00:01:11.61\00:01:15.90 and we have doctoral program in Religious Education. 00:01:15.93\00:01:21.25 The total group, I think there's about 400 students 00:01:21.28\00:01:24.70 who study in the DMin, the Doctor of Ministry program. 00:01:24.73\00:01:27.77 The other two programs, the ones that I'm not directing, 00:01:27.80\00:01:31.66 have a few stand for, 00:01:31.69\00:01:33.32 well, maybe about 20 students. 00:01:33.35\00:01:35.19 But the group that I take care of is about 100 students. 00:01:35.22\00:01:39.12 So it keeps me hopping to care of these students. 00:01:39.15\00:01:42.01 So it's a PhD and religion. Yes. 00:01:42.04\00:01:44.10 And Doctorate in Theology or ThD. 00:01:44.13\00:01:46.53 ThD, right. 00:01:46.56\00:01:47.93 Now what is the difference between both? 00:01:47.96\00:01:49.65 Well, it's very interesting. 00:01:49.68\00:01:51.64 What's happened recently, the doctor of--the PhD program 00:01:51.67\00:01:57.19 focuses a person in one particular field of study. 00:01:57.22\00:02:00.04 We have five fields of study that students can do the PhD 00:02:00.07\00:02:04.64 and they can do it in Old Testament or New Testament. 00:02:04.67\00:02:07.94 They can do it in theology or church history 00:02:07.97\00:02:12.29 also linked up with Adventist studies 00:02:12.32\00:02:14.69 or in missions. 00:02:14.72\00:02:17.25 And it focuses them in that particular area 00:02:17.28\00:02:19.84 with a cognate area and so they become an expert. 00:02:19.87\00:02:23.09 We are training scholars and teachers 00:02:23.12\00:02:24.97 for the Adventist Church for the future. 00:02:25.00\00:02:27.28 And the ThD program is into disciplinary. 00:02:27.31\00:02:31.71 So instead of being one area that you become focused in, 00:02:31.74\00:02:36.21 there are two areas that you combine together. 00:02:36.24\00:02:39.74 Now it used to be that this program 00:02:39.77\00:02:42.52 had basically two areas that you could do studies in, 00:02:42.55\00:02:45.91 biblical studies or theological studies. 00:02:45.94\00:02:48.79 But we recently revamped it and have now opened it up 00:02:48.82\00:02:52.78 to a whole variety of like, seven different areas. 00:02:52.81\00:02:55.18 You can combine-- you can take the five fields 00:02:55.21\00:02:57.37 and you can link them together. 00:02:57.40\00:02:58.92 You could link together New Testament 00:02:58.95\00:03:00.56 and church history. 00:03:00.59\00:03:02.00 And if you wanted to do, it is interdisciplinary, 00:03:02.03\00:03:04.35 so your thesis would also, 00:03:04.38\00:03:07.42 your dissertation also be interdisciplinary. 00:03:07.45\00:03:10.01 So you might study the change of the Sabbath for instance 00:03:10.04\00:03:13.83 and it will link well between New Testament 00:03:13.86\00:03:15.72 and early church history. 00:03:15.75\00:03:17.21 You might be interested in the theology 00:03:17.24\00:03:19.73 of an early Adventist missionary. 00:03:19.76\00:03:21.71 So you might link theological studies and missions 00:03:21.74\00:03:24.09 and put those two together. 00:03:24.12\00:03:25.49 So we've made a whole variety of new options. 00:03:25.52\00:03:29.50 We have scholarships available for students that help them 00:03:29.53\00:03:34.41 through the expensive matter of getting these degrees. 00:03:34.44\00:03:39.00 But we are pleased that this program 00:03:39.03\00:03:40.53 that's been around for about 30 years 00:03:40.56\00:03:43.63 at the theological seminary has produced 00:03:43.66\00:03:46.41 and given to the Adventist Church 00:03:46.44\00:03:48.73 quite a number of leaders, scholars, 00:03:48.76\00:03:51.91 both leaders in administration, teachers, 00:03:51.94\00:03:55.88 university professors and administrators and so forth. 00:03:55.91\00:03:59.83 So it's a privilege to be involved in doing that. 00:03:59.86\00:04:03.07 And if there's anyone viewing that says, 00:04:03.10\00:04:06.12 you know, I'd just like to think about the possibility of a PhD, 00:04:06.15\00:04:09.53 go to our website at www.andrews.edu 00:04:09.56\00:04:13.96 and check the theological seminary. 00:04:13.99\00:04:16.08 You can find the PhDs, the different doctoral programs 00:04:16.11\00:04:20.39 that are there and consider some extra training 00:04:20.42\00:04:23.58 so that you can serve the Lord better. 00:04:23.61\00:04:25.30 And if they want to talk to a person 00:04:25.33\00:04:26.70 then they talk to you. You are the man. 00:04:26.73\00:04:29.21 They can email me, they can call up 00:04:29.24\00:04:31.11 and we can send them information. 00:04:31.14\00:04:33.17 Our application process is actually all online. 00:04:33.20\00:04:35.94 So people can go there and check it out. Wonderful. 00:04:35.97\00:04:39.85 Well, today we are concluding our study 00:04:39.88\00:04:42.29 in the Books of 2 Peter now. Yes. 00:04:42.32\00:04:44.40 And we're doing chapter 3-- Chapter 3:14-18, 00:04:44.43\00:04:48.46 the last five verses of the book. 00:04:48.49\00:04:49.86 So we should read them. Okay. 00:04:49.89\00:04:51.26 Sure, let's read them. 00:04:51.29\00:04:54.01 And we're starting on verse 14. 00:04:54.04\00:04:56.41 2 Peter 3:14-18. 00:04:56.44\00:04:59.36 "Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, 00:04:59.39\00:05:02.40 be diligent to be found by Him in peace, 00:05:02.43\00:05:05.02 without spot and blameless, 00:05:05.05\00:05:06.99 and consider that the longsuffering 00:05:07.02\00:05:09.13 of our Lord is salvation, 00:05:09.16\00:05:10.67 as also our beloved brother Paul, 00:05:10.70\00:05:12.62 according to the wisdom given to him, 00:05:12.65\00:05:15.13 has written to you, as also in all his epistles, 00:05:15.16\00:05:18.51 speaking in them of these things, 00:05:18.54\00:05:20.65 in which are some things hard to understand, 00:05:20.68\00:05:23.67 which untaught and unstable 00:05:23.70\00:05:25.70 people twist to their own destruction 00:05:25.73\00:05:28.53 as they do also the rest of the Scriptures. 00:05:28.56\00:05:31.44 You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, 00:05:31.47\00:05:34.48 beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, 00:05:34.51\00:05:38.92 being led away with the error of the wicked, 00:05:38.95\00:05:41.77 but grow in the grace and the knowledge of our Lord 00:05:41.80\00:05:44.02 and Savior Jesus Christ. 00:05:44.05\00:05:45.42 To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen." 00:05:45.45\00:05:50.32 Amen. All right. 00:05:50.35\00:05:52.07 Well, it's wonderful to come to the conclusion 00:05:52.10\00:05:54.00 of these beautiful books that the Apostle has written. 00:05:54.03\00:05:59.45 Verse 18, "Grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord 00:05:59.48\00:06:02.51 and Savior Jesus Christ," 00:06:02.54\00:06:03.91 that's a good ending for letter in it. 00:06:03.94\00:06:05.31 It's surely is. It surely is. 00:06:05.34\00:06:06.72 How does this passage link to 00:06:06.75\00:06:09.02 what we've been studying before to the previous verses? 00:06:09.05\00:06:11.50 All right, so in chapter 3, 00:06:11.53\00:06:13.22 Peter responds to the false teacher's teachings 00:06:13.25\00:06:16.17 about the second coming and he shows 00:06:16.20\00:06:19.01 that they had a mistaken view of the creation 00:06:19.04\00:06:23.28 and of the time since the creation, 00:06:23.31\00:06:25.83 a mistaken view that gave them a mistaken eschatology. 00:06:25.86\00:06:29.27 He corrects that by correcting their view of creation 00:06:29.30\00:06:32.18 and then of course, 00:06:32.21\00:06:33.58 getting their proper view of eschatology. 00:06:33.61\00:06:35.17 And then he goes on to teach the Christians that God is-- 00:06:35.20\00:06:41.60 they are misunderstanding. 00:06:41.63\00:06:43.00 Some people have misunderstood 00:06:43.03\00:06:44.63 the teaching about the second coming of Jesus 00:06:44.66\00:06:46.97 and this apparent delay. 00:06:47.00\00:06:49.22 It is God's patience. 00:06:49.25\00:06:50.80 He's waiting for people to turn to Him in repentance. 00:06:50.83\00:06:53.86 So he outlines about what will happen then 00:06:53.89\00:06:56.63 when Jesus returns and notes that all of this 00:06:56.66\00:06:59.67 is a call to a holy life and a call to repentance. 00:06:59.70\00:07:04.01 Now specifically how does verse 14 verse, where it says, 00:07:04.04\00:07:07.22 "Therefore beloved, looking forward to these things, 00:07:07.25\00:07:09.79 be diligent to be found by Him in peace, 00:07:09.82\00:07:12.29 without spot and blameless," 00:07:12.32\00:07:13.69 how does this verse link with the context? 00:07:13.72\00:07:18.45 The previous context? 00:07:18.48\00:07:19.85 Yes. Yeah. 00:07:19.88\00:07:21.25 It's interesting because there are 00:07:21.28\00:07:22.65 quite a few words in this verse 00:07:22.68\00:07:24.77 that we shall say maybe ring the bells, 00:07:24.80\00:07:27.76 ring the chimes of previous verses. 00:07:27.79\00:07:30.13 The first one is this word for, he says waiting for. 00:07:30.16\00:07:36.24 The Greek word is prosdechomai, 00:07:36.27\00:07:38.34 means to wait for, look for, to expect something. 00:07:38.37\00:07:41.51 So these things that they are supposed to wait for 00:07:41.54\00:07:45.81 clearly includes the second coming of Jesus, 00:07:45.84\00:07:48.99 but it also appears to include 00:07:49.02\00:07:50.82 the new heavens and the new earth, 00:07:50.85\00:07:53.22 because the term is plural, these things, 00:07:53.25\00:07:55.61 you're waiting for these things. 00:07:55.64\00:07:57.01 What are you waiting for? 00:07:57.04\00:07:58.41 The new heavens and the new earth 00:07:58.44\00:07:59.81 where righteousness dwells 00:07:59.84\00:08:03.14 I think of a-- 00:08:03.17\00:08:05.00 well, I think back some, quite some years ago, 00:08:05.03\00:08:08.08 when we were missionaries in Africa 00:08:08.11\00:08:09.80 and I would come home from work 00:08:09.83\00:08:11.98 and I always received this amazing reception 00:08:12.01\00:08:16.77 to my two children. 00:08:16.80\00:08:18.23 Daddy is home, daddy has come. 00:08:18.26\00:08:20.45 And they would come running and then my daughter 00:08:20.48\00:08:22.24 would throw her arms around my knees, 00:08:22.27\00:08:24.75 you know, daddy has come home. 00:08:24.78\00:08:26.89 We are waiting for Jesus to come back. 00:08:26.92\00:08:30.07 We should have that kind of expectancy that, 00:08:30.10\00:08:32.58 like a little child waiting for their parent 00:08:32.61\00:08:34.83 or grandchild waiting for grandpa 00:08:34.86\00:08:37.08 or grandma to come and just waiting, 00:08:37.11\00:08:39.44 looking out the widow, 00:08:39.47\00:08:40.84 hoping that they'll be here soon. 00:08:40.87\00:08:42.30 So the first word is this idea of waiting for. 00:08:42.33\00:08:45.53 Then he uses another term 00:08:45.56\00:08:47.57 that's kind of similar to what he used before 00:08:47.60\00:08:50.31 and he talks about being diligent, 00:08:50.34\00:08:53.66 actually the Greek word is Spoudazo 00:08:53.69\00:08:56.64 that means to hasten or to hurry, 00:08:56.67\00:08:59.31 to be zealous or eager, even to take pains 00:08:59.34\00:09:04.25 or make every effort. 00:09:04.28\00:09:05.65 So it talks about being diligent. 00:09:05.68\00:09:07.90 It reminds us of this hurrying 00:09:07.93\00:09:09.80 or hastening the coming of Jesus. 00:09:09.83\00:09:12.32 Being quick to repent, you see, being diligent. 00:09:12.35\00:09:17.24 More--looking forward to is the waiting for 00:09:17.27\00:09:23.77 and then this is what you're going to do to help it come. 00:09:23.80\00:09:26.41 You're gonna take pains, you're gonna be diligent. 00:09:26.44\00:09:30.58 I've said before we've talked about this little bit, 00:09:30.61\00:09:32.76 I'm a musician, I'm a cellist. 00:09:32.79\00:09:35.04 And I like to play in these musical programs 00:09:35.07\00:09:39.31 that we have at the seminary. 00:09:39.34\00:09:40.84 But you have to prepare 00:09:40.87\00:09:43.21 and you have to prepare diligently, 00:09:43.24\00:09:45.73 if you don't want to flub it and you know, look bad. 00:09:45.76\00:09:49.67 They usually say, you should show them what you can do, 00:09:49.70\00:09:53.67 not what you can't do. 00:09:53.70\00:09:55.76 And so but you have to play it over and over. 00:09:55.79\00:10:00.40 I've brought my cello with me here 00:10:00.43\00:10:01.83 and I've been practicing here. 00:10:01.86\00:10:04.23 You have to practice over and over. 00:10:04.26\00:10:06.62 It's important to go slowly enough to get it right, 00:10:06.65\00:10:09.35 because what the musician say is 00:10:09.38\00:10:12.30 practice makes permanent. Practice makes permanent. 00:10:12.33\00:10:17.87 As your hand gets used to doing things in a certain way 00:10:17.90\00:10:21.32 and if you do it the wrong way that's the direction it will go. 00:10:21.35\00:10:25.22 So we have to be very eager to take pains. 00:10:25.25\00:10:28.80 Then he uses two terms spotless and blameless. 00:10:28.83\00:10:32.30 And those two terms remind us of 1 Peter, 1 Peter 1:19, 00:10:32.33\00:10:37.19 where Jesus is the spotless and blameless lamb. 00:10:37.22\00:10:41.15 And that kind of terminology reminds us 00:10:41.18\00:10:43.91 that back in 1 Peter, Jesus is our example 00:10:43.94\00:10:48.31 that we are supposed to follow. 00:10:48.34\00:10:49.71 So like He is blameless and spotless, 00:10:49.74\00:10:51.88 we are to make pains to follow the pattern, 00:10:51.91\00:10:55.86 to walk in His steps. 00:10:55.89\00:10:57.99 Then finally, it's really interesting, 00:10:58.02\00:11:00.87 he uses the word to be found, 00:11:00.90\00:11:05.27 to be found with Him in peace at Christ return. 00:11:05.30\00:11:10.35 Now some people say, you know, I didn't see the word find 00:11:10.38\00:11:14.96 back there in the previous verses. 00:11:14.99\00:11:17.36 But it's actually in verse 10. 00:11:17.39\00:11:19.35 Would you read verse 10 again? 00:11:19.38\00:11:20.78 "But the day of the Lord 00:11:20.81\00:11:22.18 will come as a thief in the night, 00:11:22.21\00:11:23.91 in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, 00:11:23.94\00:11:27.18 and the elements will melt with fervent heat, 00:11:27.21\00:11:29.88 both the earth and the works that are in it 00:11:29.91\00:11:32.22 will be burned up." Yes. 00:11:32.25\00:11:36.02 You didn't see the word find there, did you? 00:11:36.05\00:11:37.67 I was looking for it, I don't think I read it, no. 00:11:37.70\00:11:40.10 It wasn't there. 00:11:40.13\00:11:41.50 Let me read it in this transaction 00:11:41.53\00:11:42.90 because it shows a little bit better, 00:11:42.93\00:11:45.24 "But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, 00:11:45.27\00:11:46.82 and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, 00:11:46.85\00:11:49.21 and the heavenly bodies will be burned up 00:11:49.24\00:11:51.00 and dissolved and the earth 00:11:51.03\00:11:53.02 and the works that are done on it will be exposed." 00:11:53.05\00:11:58.96 And the Greek word is Evrisko, it will be found. 00:11:58.99\00:12:02.83 It's like they will be found out. 00:12:02.86\00:12:04.52 They will be shown for what they are, okay. 00:12:04.55\00:12:07.07 Now notice that this is a echo in verse 14, 00:12:07.10\00:12:10.98 "Therefore, beloved, since you're waiting for these things, 00:12:11.01\00:12:13.24 be diligent to be found by him 00:12:13.27\00:12:16.22 without spot or blemish and at peace." 00:12:16.25\00:12:18.88 The world's gonna be found wicked and evil 00:12:18.91\00:12:21.71 and filled with evil things. 00:12:21.74\00:12:23.99 But you are to be found 00:12:24.02\00:12:26.80 spotless and blameless in Christ. 00:12:26.83\00:12:29.31 You know, at peace with Him, linked up with Him. 00:12:29.34\00:12:33.66 Remember he is protecting the Christians 00:12:33.69\00:12:36.38 from the false ways, 00:12:36.41\00:12:37.78 from the false ways of these false teachers. 00:12:37.81\00:12:40.38 And so He keeps building, He keeps reminding them, 00:12:40.41\00:12:43.18 as He keeps coming back to this, because over and over and over, 00:12:43.21\00:12:47.28 he wants to make these people ready for the coming of Jesus. 00:12:47.31\00:12:52.82 What does verse 15 add here? 00:12:52.85\00:12:56.13 Ah, when we read verse 15, 00:12:56.16\00:12:57.78 "And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, 00:12:57.81\00:13:00.52 just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you 00:13:00.55\00:13:05.21 according to the wisdom given to him." All right. 00:13:05.24\00:13:09.77 Well, these terms all intimately-- 00:13:09.80\00:13:13.78 the terms in verse 14, 00:13:13.81\00:13:15.18 all intimately tied together to what Peter has said before 00:13:15.21\00:13:18.40 that Christians are to wait for Jesus to come, 00:13:18.43\00:13:21.05 they're not supposed to be idle, 00:13:21.08\00:13:22.45 they are supposed to strive for holy character. 00:13:22.48\00:13:24.74 Verse 15, turns to the divine side of things of the equation. 00:13:24.77\00:13:30.53 And in verse 14, we're called to be ready and watching. 00:13:30.56\00:13:33.32 In verse 15, we are told that 00:13:33.35\00:13:35.87 God provides and His patience with us, 00:13:35.90\00:13:39.38 we can count as salvation. 00:13:39.41\00:13:41.47 We'll talk a little bit more about this verse. 00:13:41.50\00:13:43.72 But right now we'll just take a break for a few moments. 00:13:43.75\00:13:46.21
