Hello, friends, and welcome to "Books of the Book." 00:00:20.94\00:00:23.21 I'm so glad you're with us to study this very interesting 00:00:23.24\00:00:27.07 and fascinating Books of 1st and 2nd Peter. 00:00:27.10\00:00:31.40 So grab a pencil, a piece of paper, 00:00:31.43\00:00:33.45 and join us as Dr. Shepherd shares some very deep insights. 00:00:33.48\00:00:37.74 Dr. Shepherd, we are talking now, of the end- Yes. 00:00:37.77\00:00:41.75 We are in 2nd Peter Chapter 3, 00:00:41.78\00:00:44.17 and Peter is talking about the end, 00:00:44.20\00:00:46.41 but he doesn't stop there, he continues talking on this- 00:00:46.44\00:00:50.49 Yeah, we noticed in verses- 00:00:50.52\00:00:51.93 we're looking at 2nd Peter Chapter 3, 00:00:51.96\00:00:54.25 and we notice in verses 1 through 7 00:00:54.28\00:00:56.09 that he addressed the false teaching of these heretics, 00:00:56.12\00:01:01.59 these false teachers they were trying 00:01:01.62\00:01:03.26 to mislead people about the second coming. 00:01:03.29\00:01:05.95 We found that he talked about protology and eschatology. 00:01:05.98\00:01:10.99 They said that, "The end's not coming 00:01:11.02\00:01:13.37 because everything's continued as it was 00:01:13.40\00:01:15.04 from the creation of the world," 00:01:15.07\00:01:16.44 and he said, "Ah, yes, let's talk about the creation." 00:01:16.47\00:01:19.17 And he goes back and says, "By the word of God, 00:01:19.20\00:01:21.18 the heavens and earth were made, by water through water, 00:01:21.21\00:01:24.41 it was also destroyed by water and God is now preserving it." 00:01:24.44\00:01:28.35 So God is intervening in history all the time 00:01:28.38\00:01:31.39 and He's now preserving it for the destruction 00:01:31.42\00:01:33.71 that will come from fire in the future. 00:01:33.74\00:01:35.78 So he agrees with them 00:01:35.81\00:01:37.18 that the past is a predictor of the future. 00:01:37.21\00:01:40.31 They just had a mistaken view about the past. 00:01:40.34\00:01:43.32 So why does he go on? 00:01:43.35\00:01:44.73 Because thinking Christians have questions. 00:01:44.76\00:01:49.40 And when false teachers come and they start raising doubts, 00:01:49.43\00:01:54.48 those doubts can kind of grow 00:01:54.51\00:01:56.72 and blossom into weeds in the Christian life. 00:01:56.75\00:02:01.20 So Peter realizes that 00:02:01.23\00:02:02.81 the Christians need to be protected by a proper teaching. 00:02:02.84\00:02:07.11 Remember, he knows he is going to die. 00:02:07.14\00:02:09.11 So he's going to pass onto them important information. 00:02:09.14\00:02:11.85 Let's read the passage, 2nd Peter 3:8-13. 00:02:11.88\00:02:17.29 "But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, 00:02:17.32\00:02:20.01 that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, 00:02:20.04\00:02:23.56 and a thousand years is as a day. 00:02:23.59\00:02:25.81 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, 00:02:25.84\00:02:28.63 as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, 00:02:28.66\00:02:32.40 not willing that anyone should perish, 00:02:32.43\00:02:35.00 but that all should come to repentance. 00:02:35.03\00:02:37.60 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, 00:02:37.63\00:02:40.56 in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, 00:02:40.59\00:02:43.89 and the elements will melt with fervent heat, 00:02:43.92\00:02:47.10 but both, the earth and the works 00:02:47.13\00:02:49.64 that are in it will be burned up. 00:02:49.67\00:02:52.38 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, 00:02:52.41\00:02:55.46 what manner of persons ought you to be 00:02:55.49\00:02:57.37 in holy conduct and godliness, 00:02:57.40\00:03:00.09 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, 00:03:00.12\00:03:03.71 because of which the heavens will be dissolved, 00:03:03.74\00:03:06.15 being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? 00:03:06.18\00:03:11.08 Nevertheless, we, according to His promise, 00:03:11.11\00:03:13.86 look for new heavens and a new earth 00:03:13.89\00:03:15.82 in which righteousness dwells." 00:03:15.85\00:03:18.37 Mm-hmm. Beautiful passage. 00:03:18.40\00:03:22.10 Well, in verse 8, we want to just jump right into this, 00:03:22.13\00:03:25.81 and in verse 8, we'll look at this. 00:03:25.84\00:03:28.92 He says, "But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, 00:03:28.95\00:03:31.71 that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, 00:03:31.74\00:03:34.74 and a thousand years as one day." 00:03:34.77\00:03:36.56 Now, those are one of those 00:03:36.59\00:03:37.96 difficult passages to understand that- 00:03:37.99\00:03:39.99 Now remember there's no problem text in the Bible. 00:03:40.02\00:03:42.35 The text is not the problem, 00:03:42.38\00:03:43.93 our understanding of the text sometimes is. 00:03:43.96\00:03:46.38 Right. So what is the meaning then? 00:03:46.41\00:03:47.96 One day is as- One day is- 00:03:47.99\00:03:49.73 A thousand years is as a day- 00:03:49.76\00:03:52.21 Well, actually, he says, 00:03:52.24\00:03:53.61 "One day with the Lord is as a thousand years 00:03:53.64\00:03:56.65 and a thousand years is one day." 00:03:56.68\00:03:58.44 So he starts with the phrase, One day is as a thousand years. 00:03:58.47\00:04:03.60 And then he says, "A thousand years is one day." 00:04:03.63\00:04:05.20 Again, one of those nice chiasms, you know, a-b-b-a. 00:04:05.23\00:04:09.37 So certainly, this is not the idea 00:04:09.40\00:04:13.11 that one day in prophesy is equal to one thousand years. 00:04:13.14\00:04:16.94 There are some people 00:04:16.97\00:04:18.34 that want to take that idea and run with it. 00:04:18.37\00:04:21.14 The question is, "Why is that not correct?" 00:04:21.17\00:04:23.46 Well, the problem is that first of all it contradicts 00:04:23.49\00:04:27.07 the plain teaching of other places in the scripture. 00:04:27.10\00:04:30.18 Ezekiel 4:6, Numbers 14:34 tell us that, 00:04:30.21\00:04:34.96 "One day in prophesy equals one literal year." Okay. 00:04:34.99\00:04:39.50 So there's yet another problem however right here 00:04:39.53\00:04:42.83 in the text of 2nd Peter and that is, 00:04:42.86\00:04:45.45 when you just take it as some kind of indication 00:04:45.48\00:04:47.78 of what a day of prophesy might represent. 00:04:47.81\00:04:51.99 You ignore the second part of this little wisdom saying, 00:04:52.02\00:04:55.12 this aphorism but then when he says, 00:04:55.15\00:04:57.43 "A day is as a thousand years 00:04:57.46\00:05:01.40 and a thousand years is as a day." 00:05:01.43\00:05:04.38 So then we ask the question, "Why does he say this?" 00:05:04.41\00:05:11.90 Remember, he's talking about- 00:05:11.93\00:05:13.98 he's always fighting the false teachers, 00:05:14.01\00:05:16.86 and their skepticism revolved around 00:05:16.89\00:05:20.73 and focused on the second coming of Jesus. 00:05:20.76\00:05:22.73 They said, "He is not coming back. 00:05:22.76\00:05:24.58 Where is this coming that was promised?" 00:05:24.61\00:05:27.07 They're saying, "It's delayed. 00:05:27.10\00:05:30.09 It's too long. He hasn't come back yet." 00:05:30.12\00:05:32.91 Of course, we Adventists' 00:05:32.94\00:05:34.31 have heard this kind of language before. 00:05:34.34\00:05:37.36 But Peter says, "Wait a minute, let me explain this to you. 00:05:37.39\00:05:42.61 One day with the Lord is as a thousand years." 00:05:42.64\00:05:46.70 That's the first part we've got to understand. 00:05:46.73\00:05:48.31 One day is as a thousand years. 00:05:48.34\00:05:52.02 Now I don't know if you've ever read one of these books 00:05:52.05\00:05:55.20 like "The Day Kennedy Died" or something like that. 00:05:55.23\00:05:59.19 You get a book that's like 600 pages long, 00:05:59.22\00:06:03.96 and it's a 600 page book, 00:06:03.99\00:06:06.75 and it's talking about 24 hours of time. 00:06:06.78\00:06:10.63 Okay. And it's like minute by minute. 00:06:10.66\00:06:14.42 You know, just takes you through all the events. 00:06:14.45\00:06:17.03 People love these books, you know-"Oh, the details." 00:06:17.06\00:06:19.80 You know, they get to see it and everything. 00:06:19.83\00:06:22.27 Peter says that, "With the Lord-" 00:06:22.30\00:06:26.23 Now this is with our Lord, with God, 00:06:26.26\00:06:28.41 "With the Lord, one day is as a thousand years." 00:06:28.44\00:06:35.72 Well, that would mean that he knows so much about me. 00:06:35.75\00:06:43.16 He's so close to me 00:06:43.19\00:06:45.67 that he knows more about my life than I know about my life, 00:06:45.70\00:06:51.37 lots more about my life. 00:06:51.40\00:06:53.11 For me, it's just one day of time. 00:06:53.14\00:06:54.78 For him, it's a thousand years. 00:06:54.81\00:06:58.15 We have a nice term 00:06:58.18\00:07:00.20 we use in theology for this, we call it eminence. 00:07:00.23\00:07:04.08 Not spelled with an eminence with an 'i' in the middle 00:07:04.11\00:07:09.37 but that means like something's about to happen, 00:07:09.40\00:07:11.78 but eminence is the concept of God's closeness. 00:07:11.81\00:07:17.06 He's very close to you. Okay, God's eminence. 00:07:17.09\00:07:20.99 The other part of the aphorism 00:07:21.02\00:07:22.62 and that's the case for the first part of the aphorism, 00:07:22.65\00:07:24.67 the little wisdom saying. 00:07:24.70\00:07:26.38 Then the second part of the aphorism 00:07:26.41\00:07:28.26 tells us something else about God. 00:07:28.29\00:07:30.37 So the first part is, one day is as a thousand years 00:07:30.40\00:07:34.08 and a thousand years as one day, right? 00:07:34.11\00:07:37.33 So in this way, when you say a thousand years is as one day, 00:07:37.36\00:07:42.66 that makes it sound like 00:07:42.69\00:07:45.48 a thousand years goes by, it's nothing. 00:07:45.51\00:07:49.58 Doesn't weigh with him at all you know, 00:07:49.61\00:07:52.17 it's just like blinking your eyes and it's gone 00:07:52.20\00:07:55.10 Time flies. Time flies. 00:07:55.13\00:07:56.61 Yeah, with God it really does. Time flies. 00:07:56.64\00:07:59.53 A thousand years is as one day. 00:07:59.56\00:08:01.78 And so then we look back and we say, 00:08:01.81\00:08:03.84 "How long has it been since Jesus died?" 00:08:03.87\00:08:05.30 Oh, it's only just a bit. 00:08:05.33\00:08:06.70 It's been about two thousand years. 00:08:06.73\00:08:08.10 Oh, that's two days in God's perspective. 00:08:08.13\00:08:12.46 And somebody says, oh, yeah, of course, He's God. 00:08:12.49\00:08:15.85 But, you know, we don't feel that way. 00:08:15.88\00:08:19.26 You spend a long time, we're waiting, 00:08:19.29\00:08:20.91 you know, and why hasn't He come back? 00:08:20.94\00:08:24.20 Peter puts together two very interesting ideas, all right. 00:08:24.24\00:08:27.99 One day is as a thousand years tells us about God's eminence. 00:08:28.02\00:08:31.21 That's His closeness to us. 00:08:31.24\00:08:33.52 One thousand years is as one day 00:08:33.55\00:08:35.78 tells us how high He is above us. 00:08:35.81\00:08:38.03 That's His transcendence. He's far above us. 00:08:38.06\00:08:41.14 He's much greater than we can ever understand 00:08:41.17\00:08:44.23 and so He is the almighty above all of time, right? 00:08:44.26\00:08:49.54 So, we actually need 00:08:49.57\00:08:52.83 both, His eminence and His transcendence. 00:08:52.86\00:08:56.80 His eminence tells us 00:08:56.83\00:08:58.20 that He is close to us in our troubles. 00:08:58.23\00:09:00.60 If all we had were His transcendence, 00:09:00.63\00:09:03.02 we'd say, "Ah, yes, but He's God. 00:09:03.05\00:09:06.17 And He's faraway. He doesn't understand us." 00:09:06.20\00:09:08.92 If all we had was His eminence, 00:09:08.95\00:09:11.07 we wouldn't understand how powerful He is. 00:09:11.10\00:09:13.45 How He is the almighty. How He is above everything. 00:09:13.48\00:09:15.98 So we need both of these ideas put together. 00:09:16.01\00:09:20.44 His eminence warms our hearts 00:09:20.47\00:09:23.01 and tells us that He is with us even now. 00:09:23.04\00:09:26.84 Even when we may have doubts and discouragement, 00:09:26.87\00:09:30.27 His transcendence tells us that He's in-charge, 00:09:30.30\00:09:33.55 and we can trust our lives 00:09:33.58\00:09:35.42 to the hand that guides the universe. 00:09:35.45\00:09:38.03 You see, when you get down to the real question 00:09:38.06\00:09:40.22 about the second coming of Jesus, 00:09:40.25\00:09:42.91 it's not a question as much of what as it is of who? 00:09:42.94\00:09:50.48 Jesus said in John 14:3, 00:09:50.51\00:09:54.67 "If I go and prepare a place for you, 00:09:54.70\00:09:57.74 I will most certainly come again and receive you unto Myself, 00:09:57.77\00:10:02.67 that where I am, there you may be also." 00:10:02.70\00:10:07.29 So the question is, "Do you trust this man?" 00:10:07.32\00:10:11.07 He made this promise, you see. 00:10:11.10\00:10:13.00 He said, "I'm coming back." 00:10:13.03\00:10:15.05 And we can trust His hand, a hand that guides the universe, 00:10:15.08\00:10:19.20 that one who is close to us and yet far above us. 00:10:19.23\00:10:22.27 It's a beautiful little picture. 00:10:22.30\00:10:24.57 Now is God or Jesus delaying in coming back, 00:10:24.60\00:10:27.76 verse 9 says that, "The Lord is not slack." 00:10:27.79\00:10:31.13 Or I think your version says, "Slow." 00:10:31.16\00:10:33.83 Why does Peter say that "God is not slow?" 00:10:33.86\00:10:37.46 "The Lord is not slow 00:10:37.49\00:10:38.96 to fulfill His promise as some count slowness, 00:10:38.99\00:10:41.95 but is patient towards you not wishing that any should perish, 00:10:41.98\00:10:45.44 but that all should come to reach repentance." 00:10:45.47\00:10:48.29 Okay. The Lord is not slow. 00:10:48.32\00:10:51.67 I have a sermon I preach about this, 00:10:51.70\00:10:53.07 I call it, God is not slow, He is slow. 00:10:53.10\00:10:57.15 And people say, " What?" 00:10:57.18\00:10:58.55 But that helps them come to church, you know, so- 00:10:58.58\00:11:01.61 They say, "what does he mean by that?" 00:11:01.64\00:11:03.01 I've got to go find out. Okay. 00:11:03.04\00:11:04.49 We want curiosity to bring people to church. 00:11:04.52\00:11:07.10 We should choose-we should make 00:11:07.13\00:11:09.05 our programs or presentations sparky and interesting, 00:11:09.08\00:11:12.75 and strike people's curiosity. 00:11:12.78\00:11:15.63 When they leave church in the morning 00:11:15.66\00:11:17.03 and they say to you, "Pastor, that was interesting. 00:11:17.06\00:11:20.23 I learned something I didn't know before." 00:11:20.26\00:11:22.32 Guess what? They'll come back. 00:11:22.35\00:11:25.74 They'll come back because they're curious 00:11:25.77\00:11:27.87 and some people might say, "Ah, curiosity, 00:11:27.90\00:11:32.89 that's a terrible reason to come to church. 00:11:32.92\00:11:36.19 Well, I'm afraid God has no shame. 00:11:36.22\00:11:39.42 He is glad if people come for- 00:11:39.45\00:11:41.33 even the wrong reasons to come into His house 00:11:41.36\00:11:43.56 because there they will hear the gospel, okay. 00:11:43.59\00:11:46.72 Now, the false teachers suggest that Christ is not coming back. 00:11:46.75\00:11:51.69 It's been too long, they say. 00:11:51.72\00:11:54.11 Now this suggests that there actually was 00:11:54.14\00:11:55.95 a lively expectation of Jesus return in the first century, 00:11:55.98\00:11:59.80 but as time went by, people began to question 00:11:59.83\00:12:02.21 the promise that Jesus had made. 00:12:02.24\00:12:04.90 It probably sounds familiar to us as Seventh-day Adventist. 00:12:04.93\00:12:09.23 People will say, "Are you people still teaching 00:12:09.26\00:12:11.87 that Jesus is coming again soon?" 00:12:11.90\00:12:13.89 And you know what the answer is, "Yes, we are. 00:12:13.92\00:12:17.40 Yes, we are." Jesus is coming back. 00:12:17.43\00:12:20.43 Jesus told the story about this in fact 00:12:20.46\00:12:22.68 over in the Book of Luke 18:1-8. 00:12:22.71\00:12:28.37 Luke 18:1-8, read these verses. 00:12:28.40\00:12:35.08 "Then He spoke a parable to them, 00:12:35.11\00:12:37.02 that men always ought to pray and not lose heart, 00:12:37.05\00:12:39.67 saying, "There was in a certain city 00:12:39.70\00:12:41.83 a judge who did not fear God nor regard man. 00:12:41.86\00:12:45.54 Now there was a widow in that city 00:12:45.57\00:12:48.33 and she came to him, saying, 00:12:48.36\00:12:49.73 'Get justice for me from my adversary.' 00:12:49.76\00:12:52.77 And he would not for a while 00:12:52.80\00:12:54.17 but afterward he said within himself, 00:12:54.20\00:12:56.40 'Though I do not fear God nor regard man, 00:12:56.43\00:12:59.08 yet because this widow troubles me I will avenge her, 00:12:59.11\00:13:02.63 lest by her continual coming she weary me.'" 00:13:02.66\00:13:05.65 Then the Lord said, "Hear what the unjust judge said. 00:13:05.68\00:13:10.13 And shall God not avenge His own elect 00:13:10.16\00:13:12.75 who cry out day and night to Him, 00:13:12.78\00:13:15.49 though He bears long with them? 00:13:15.52\00:13:17.65 I tell you that He will avenge them speedily. 00:13:17.68\00:13:20.71 Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, 00:13:20.74\00:13:23.10 will He find faith on earth?" 00:13:23.13\00:13:26.88 Well, it's an awful, interesting little story there 00:13:26.91\00:13:30.28 that he has told, isn't it? 00:13:30.31\00:13:31.68 And we'll just take a break right now 00:13:31.71\00:13:33.55 and then we'll come back and talk about that story. 00:13:33.58\00:13:35.91
