Welcome back to Books of the Book. 00:00:01.40\00:00:02.77 With us is Dr. Tom Shepherd. He is sharing from the book of 00:00:02.80\00:00:06.23 2 Peter. Dr. Shepherd you were saying about these philosophies 00:00:06.27\00:00:10.32 going on. Greek philosopher Epicurus saying that there 00:00:10.35\00:00:15.72 are gods but they do not judge, reward or punish. Were there any 00:00:15.75\00:00:21.05 other philosophies going on at that time. 00:00:21.09\00:00:23.32 Yeah. of course, there were many other different kinds of schools 00:00:23.35\00:00:26.07 of philosophy. We're kind of thinking of the ones that are 00:00:26.11\00:00:28.44 linked up with the false teachers; kind of have some kind 00:00:28.47\00:00:30.76 of parallel to the false teachers and the Epicureans 00:00:30.80\00:00:33.57 seemed to have that similar kind of philosophical view point. 00:00:33.61\00:00:38.94 The Jewish sect of the Sadducees also had similar characteristics 00:00:38.97\00:00:44.27 to the Epicureans and to these false teachers interestingly 00:00:44.31\00:00:48.48 enough. They believed that there is no fate, no fate exists. 00:00:48.52\00:00:52.94 There is no providence. God does not commit or even see evil. 00:00:52.98\00:00:57.41 They believed in radical free will, self-determination, and 00:00:57.45\00:01:01.17 that the soul does not live on after death. There are no 00:01:01.21\00:01:04.84 penalties or rewards in the underworld and there is no 00:01:04.88\00:01:08.44 resurrection, which, of course, they are known for in the Bible. 00:01:08.48\00:01:13.46 Now it is not to say that the false teachers in 2 Peter 3 are 00:01:13.49\00:01:18.44 Epicureans or that they are Sadducees either, but they seem 00:01:18.47\00:01:23.78 to be influenced by the same kind of milieu of ideas. 00:01:23.81\00:01:27.75 I mean we see this around us in our world. Post modernism is 00:01:27.78\00:01:33.03 pretty strong in our culture, gaining strength anyways. 00:01:33.07\00:01:37.08 And it subtly influences how people think of things. 00:01:37.11\00:01:41.05 There are numerous kinds of view points and philosophies out 00:01:41.09\00:01:45.14 there and some of these come into church life or into 00:01:45.17\00:01:47.96 people's minds and it's interesting you have this kind 00:01:47.99\00:01:50.74 of parallel patterns develop. 00:01:50.78\00:01:52.77 So how does Peter respond to some of these arguments that 00:01:52.80\00:01:56.43 these false teachers or philosophers are bringing into 00:01:56.47\00:02:00.06 the church? Well we better take a look here 00:02:00.10\00:02:01.70 at verses 5-7 because here's how Peter responds to them. 00:02:01.74\00:02:05.40 He says, "For they deliberately overlook... " This is 2 Peter 3 00:02:05.44\00:02:09.14 verse 5. "For they deliberately overlook this fact; that the 00:02:09.17\00:02:12.51 heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of 00:02:12.55\00:02:16.12 water and through water by the Word of God and that by means 00:02:16.15\00:02:20.20 of these the world that then existed was deluged with water 00:02:20.23\00:02:24.41 and perished. But by the same Word the heavens and earth that 00:02:24.45\00:02:28.38 now exist are stored up for fire being kept until the day of 00:02:28.42\00:02:32.85 judgment and destruction of the ungodly. " All right. So let's 00:02:32.88\00:02:37.37 just review the mockers' words, okay. They say where is the 00:02:37.40\00:02:41.76 promise of his coming, so they are thinking of eschatology; all 00:02:41.79\00:02:45.68 continues the same as it was from creation. That's what we 00:02:45.71\00:02:50.36 call protology. So eschatology and protology, proto - the first 00:02:50.39\00:02:54.60 things, back to the beginning. So they first talk about the end 00:02:54.64\00:02:58.24 and then they say the reason why we don't have to worry about 00:02:58.28\00:03:01.82 that is because everything has continued as it was from the 00:03:01.85\00:03:06.46 beginning. Peter's response: He first notes that they are 00:03:06.49\00:03:11.02 forgetters. They conveniently, deliberately forget, he says and 00:03:11.06\00:03:15.35 then he talks about creation. So he talks about protology 00:03:15.38\00:03:19.91 first and then he talks about the destruction of the world 00:03:19.95\00:03:24.21 by the flood and then he says the world is being preserved for 00:03:24.25\00:03:28.34 fire in the future. So he starts with protology and ends with 00:03:28.37\00:03:32.26 eschatology. So do you know what kind of pattern that would be 00:03:32.29\00:03:36.14 called? Um, what would that be called? 00:03:36.18\00:03:38.29 That would be called a chiasm. Okay. Because you have... they 00:03:38.32\00:03:41.30 talk about... the first thing they talk about is eschatology 00:03:41.34\00:03:44.72 then they talk about protology. Peter starts with protology and 00:03:44.76\00:03:49.29 then he talks about eschatology. So A, B, B, A. Typical Hebraic 00:03:49.32\00:03:53.82 way of thinking. You know how you kind of pattern your 00:03:53.86\00:03:56.77 thoughts. It's just interesting to see. You know in this 00:03:56.80\00:03:59.68 particular case it may not tell us a lot about the 00:03:59.71\00:04:02.52 interpretation, but it shows us their patterns of thinking. 00:04:02.56\00:04:06.68 The false teachers begin by talking about the end and then 00:04:06.71\00:04:10.03 with the beginning and Peter reverses it and talks about 00:04:10.07\00:04:13.31 creation and then talks about the end. So that brings us into 00:04:13.35\00:04:20.04 his exact ideas that he presents. 00:04:20.08\00:04:23.08 On creation and what does Peter teach on creation? 00:04:23.12\00:04:25.75 He starts off by saying that it happened long ago. All right now 00:04:25.78\00:04:32.80 that's not a specific term for me. 00:04:32.84\00:04:37.53 A long time ago can mean about any time. 00:04:37.57\00:04:41.05 I'm talking to a 10 year old and they say it happened a long time 00:04:41.08\00:04:46.01 ago. That might be five months ago. For a person my age well a 00:04:46.04\00:04:50.53 long time ago is a lot longer than five months and it just 00:04:50.56\00:04:54.71 depends on the context. Now in the particular context that 00:04:54.75\00:04:58.96 Peter is talking about these people referred 00:04:59.00\00:05:01.45 back to creation. 00:05:01.49\00:05:02.86 So his phraseology - A long time ago - doesn't necessarily mean 00:05:02.89\00:05:07.12 billions and billions of years as some people might want to 00:05:07.16\00:05:11.59 suggest, but back to creation. They went back to creation to 00:05:11.63\00:05:15.50 describe why they don't think Jesus is coming again. So he's 00:05:15.53\00:05:19.58 going to go back to creation to explain why he thinks Jesus is 00:05:19.62\00:05:23.97 coming again, all right. So the first thing is it was long ago. 00:05:24.00\00:05:28.31 The second thing that he says is that it was out of and 00:05:28.35\00:05:33.25 through water. This is a rather enigmatic phrase; it's a little 00:05:33.29\00:05:38.58 challenging that he says out of and through water. That doesn't 00:05:38.62\00:05:43.88 have exact parallels but actually back in the creation 00:05:43.91\00:05:46.69 story... We should go back and we should read Genesis 1 verses 00:05:46.72\00:05:50.45 1-8. We're going to have to move quickly but it's important to 00:05:50.49\00:05:54.19 read the text. Genesis 1 verses 1 through 8. 00:05:54.22\00:05:58.75 "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 00:05:58.78\00:06:01.93 The earth was without form and void and the darkness was on the 00:06:01.96\00:06:05.62 face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the 00:06:05.65\00:06:09.32 face of the waters. Then God said, Let there be light and 00:06:09.36\00:06:12.96 there was light. And God saw the light that it was good and God 00:06:13.00\00:06:16.90 divided the light from darkness. God called the light day and the 00:06:16.93\00:06:20.71 darkness he called night. So the evening and the morning were the 00:06:20.75\00:06:24.50 first day. Then God said, Let there be a firmament in the 00:06:24.53\00:06:27.83 midst of the waters and let it divide the waters from the 00:06:27.87\00:06:31.88 waters. Thus God made the firmament and divided the waters 00:06:31.91\00:06:35.61 which were under the firmament and the waters which were above 00:06:35.64\00:06:39.30 the firmament and it was so. And verse 8. 00:06:39.34\00:06:42.77 And called the firmament heaven. So the evening and the morning 00:06:42.80\00:06:48.11 were the second day. What we do notice here is there 00:06:48.14\00:06:51.58 is a lot of reference to water. You know the Spirit of God is 00:06:51.61\00:06:55.09 over the face of the water. God makes the dry land appear out of 00:06:55.12\00:06:58.57 the waters. The waters are separated. There's the water 00:06:58.60\00:07:02.10 above in our atmospheric heaven, there's the water in the oceans 00:07:02.14\00:07:06.35 below and there's just lots of reference to water. He doesn't 00:07:06.38\00:07:10.82 end there by talking about the use of water because it is with 00:07:10.86\00:07:15.26 water that God destroys the ancient world with the flood. 00:07:15.30\00:07:21.32 So water is like the agency of creation and the agency of 00:07:21.36\00:07:27.30 destruction of this world. And this brings Peter to his 00:07:27.34\00:07:33.21 description of the object of creation is the heavens and the 00:07:33.25\00:07:39.66 earth. It was made by God and the action he did was to create 00:07:39.69\00:07:45.19 it, he was the creator and what he made was the earth, the 00:07:45.23\00:07:49.62 heavens and the earth. This actually stands in some contrast 00:07:49.66\00:07:54.83 to ancient near east pictures of creation for the other peoples 00:07:54.87\00:08:00.39 around Israel. The stories of creation the gods had problems 00:08:00.42\00:08:05.91 with creation. They had difficulty separating water and 00:08:05.94\00:08:09.87 they decide that the want to make people so that the people 00:08:09.91\00:08:13.69 can work for them and provide food for them. It just has a 00:08:13.72\00:08:16.10 number of contrasts almost as though the creation story in 00:08:16.13\00:08:21.30 the book of Genesis is a critique of these wrong views 00:08:21.33\00:08:25.97 and points to the true creator God who made the world. 00:08:26.01\00:08:30.58 The emphasis that Peter gives is that the Word of God is what 00:08:30.61\00:08:35.44 makes the world and it is by the Word of God that the world is 00:08:35.47\00:08:39.78 destroyed. I mean he uses the agencies of water but it is the 00:08:39.81\00:08:44.09 Word of God, the powerful Word of God that's involved. 00:08:44.12\00:08:49.22 The object of creation is the earth, the means of creation is 00:08:49.26\00:08:53.46 the Word of God and the mode of creation is water. God is 00:08:53.49\00:08:57.63 sovereign over the entire world. He both made it, he controls it, 00:08:57.66\00:09:03.23 and he's able to destroy it. 00:09:03.26\00:09:05.11 So just as God's word brought the world into existence, God's 00:09:05.14\00:09:10.38 word will also destroy it. 00:09:10.42\00:09:12.06 Yes. So if we look back again at how Peter argues what's 00:09:12.10\00:09:17.85 interesting is that the false teachers argue from creation and 00:09:17.88\00:09:24.15 Peter also argues from creation. And their argument is creation 00:09:24.19\00:09:28.72 tells us and everything that's happened since then, creation 00:09:28.75\00:09:32.58 tells us that there's no second coming. This is just a foolish 00:09:32.61\00:09:35.67 idea that you have. Things are not going to change, they're 00:09:35.70\00:09:39.64 going to keep on going. And Peter says you know I'm glad 00:09:39.67\00:09:44.47 that you mentioned creation. Let's talk about that. So in 00:09:44.51\00:09:48.53 verses 5 and 6 they deliberately overlook this fact that the 00:09:48.56\00:09:52.09 heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water 00:09:52.13\00:09:55.60 and through water by the Word of God. They said ever since 00:09:55.64\00:09:59.05 creation but they didn't mention God. Peter mentions God; see 00:09:59.08\00:10:02.46 he's going to bring them to account. And he says, and by 00:10:02.49\00:10:05.04 that means that that world that then existed was deluged with 00:10:05.08\00:10:07.84 water and perished. So God intervened. He made the world; 00:10:07.88\00:10:11.37 not only did he make the world but he destroyed the world. 00:10:11.41\00:10:14.84 And so Peter says, you know what I agree with you. The past is a 00:10:14.87\00:10:19.27 predictor for the future. And you know you made a mistake 00:10:19.30\00:10:22.97 there when you talked about creation because you forgot that 00:10:23.00\00:10:26.63 God is the creator and God destroyed that world with a 00:10:26.67\00:10:29.08 flood. He used water to make it, he used water to destroy it and 00:10:29.11\00:10:34.66 now he's preserving it and next time he's not going to use 00:10:34.69\00:10:37.66 water. In fact, that's the promise at the time of the flood 00:10:37.70\00:10:41.22 that God would not again destroy the world with water. Remember 00:10:41.26\00:10:44.75 that's the whole idea of the rainbow in the sky. So Peter 00:10:44.79\00:10:48.23 says, now he is preserving it, verse 7. By that same word the 00:10:48.27\00:10:53.94 heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being 00:10:53.98\00:10:59.62 kept until the day of judgment and the destruction of the 00:10:59.66\00:11:02.83 ungodly. Just as God intervened in the past, he will intervene 00:11:02.86\00:11:07.95 once again in the future. The lesson they were supposed to 00:11:07.98\00:11:13.00 learn from creation was what we might call the lesson of water. 00:11:13.03\00:11:18.06 That is that God is the creator, God is the sovereign over the 00:11:18.09\00:11:23.51 universe and if the world goes the wrong way he will intervene 00:11:23.55\00:11:28.93 to set things right. He's the moral arbiter of the world. 00:11:28.97\00:11:33.42 Okay? So in his great love he created the world, but he is 00:11:33.46\00:11:37.84 also the impartial judge of all and he destroyed the ancient 00:11:37.88\00:11:42.37 world because of its wickedness. So that should lead us to fear 00:11:42.41\00:11:46.91 and to reverence him and that brings us to the lesson of fire. 00:11:46.95\00:11:51.31 God is preserving the present heavens and earth for the day of 00:11:51.35\00:11:55.07 judgment and destruction of the ungodly just as he destroyed the 00:11:55.11\00:11:58.80 ungodly in the past. And the false teachers indicated that 00:11:58.83\00:12:02.80 the past predicts the future. Okay says Peter, exactly right. 00:12:02.83\00:12:06.46 Exactly right. You just had the wrong idea about what the past 00:12:06.49\00:12:10.52 was like and so you have the wrong idea about what the future 00:12:10.55\00:12:14.54 is like. So it's very interesting. Peter meets the 00:12:14.58\00:12:17.13 teachers on their own ground. You know if you can show that a 00:12:17.17\00:12:21.17 person's own premise is mistaken you win the argument and that's 00:12:21.20\00:12:25.17 what he's done here. He's indicated that the false 00:12:25.20\00:12:27.48 teachers had a wrong perspective on creation. Their protology was 00:12:27.52\00:12:31.77 mistaken, thus their eschatology is mistaken. It's very important 00:12:31.80\00:12:36.02 for us to have the proper protology to understand creation 00:12:36.05\00:12:40.04 so that we can understand eschatology and where our world 00:12:40.08\00:12:44.03 is headed. Now why doesn't Peter end his 00:12:44.07\00:12:47.41 argument there? Ah! Because he has important 00:12:47.44\00:12:50.71 information to share with the Christians. They have questions 00:12:50.75\00:12:53.49 that have been raised by the false teachers that need to be 00:12:53.52\00:12:56.66 answered and so the good teacher that he is, good shepherd that 00:12:56.69\00:12:59.80 he is, loving his flock, he's going to give them more 00:12:59.83\00:13:03.02 information so that they will not be shaken by these false 00:13:03.06\00:13:07.08 teachers. Dr. Shepherd, once again, thank 00:13:07.12\00:13:09.34 you for joining us. Dr. Shepherd is with us in this Bible study 00:13:09.38\00:13:12.90 now in 2 Peter. We are about to conclude with this book of 00:13:12.94\00:13:16.58 2 Peter. Thank you for joining us. We will see you next time. 00:13:16.62\00:13:20.22 We hope that you have been blessed. Remember pick up the 00:13:20.26\00:13:22.80 Bible, ask the Lord for guidance as you read the scriptures. 00:13:22.83\00:13:25.34 May God bless you. 00:13:25.38\00:13:26.87
