¤ ¤ 00:00:01.40\00:00:21.23 Hello Welcome to Books of the Book. 00:00:21.27\00:00:22.86 My name is Deyvy Rodriguez and I am very pleased that you're 00:00:22.90\00:00:26.17 with us to study these very important books of the Bible 00:00:26.20\00:00:29.14 and today we are studying the books of 1 and 2 Peter. 00:00:29.18\00:00:32.05 But actually today we are ahead of 1 Peter. We're starting in 00:00:32.08\00:00:36.00 2 Peter and we are at chapter 3. And with us is 00:00:36.04\00:00:39.57 Dr. Tom Shepherd. He is a professor at Andrews University. 00:00:39.61\00:00:43.03 He teaches New Testament interpretation at the Seminary 00:00:43.06\00:00:46.44 there. Dr. Shepherd welcome. Thank you. 00:00:46.48\00:00:48.99 Today we are picking up at chapter 3. Is that right? 00:00:49.02\00:00:52.45 That's correct. And what are we talking about? 00:00:52.49\00:00:54.56 Chapter 3 is Peter's answer to the false teachers and he's 00:00:54.59\00:00:59.01 going to particularly focus on the subject of eschatology which 00:00:59.04\00:01:04.86 means last days, last day events so that's where the whole 00:01:04.90\00:01:09.35 chapter is going to revolve around that topic. I'd like to 00:01:09.39\00:01:14.36 take a couple moments just to review Peter's eschatology in 00:01:14.39\00:01:19.25 the two books of 1 and 2 Peter. Eschatology plays an important 00:01:19.29\00:01:23.91 part in both of these precious little gems of 1 and 2 Peter. 00:01:23.94\00:01:28.75 In 1 Peter he introduces the idea of eschatology in 00:01:28.78\00:01:32.96 connection with conversion and with the persecution that the 00:01:32.99\00:01:37.13 Christians are facing. We saw that in 1 Peter chapter 1. The 00:01:37.17\00:01:41.45 terms Peter uses to describe Christ's return are quite 00:01:41.49\00:01:46.20 superlative. It is an inheritance that he talks about that cannot perish, 00:01:46.23\00:01:50.64 cannot be defiled, cannot fade away. It's such a beautiful 00:01:50.68\00:01:54.70 presentation. God is keeping the inheritance safely for us in 00:01:54.74\00:01:58.52 heaven; that's what he says in chapter 1 verse 4. The return of 00:01:58.56\00:02:02.62 Christ is the goal of our faith and carries us through the time 00:02:02.65\00:02:06.68 of persecution in this dark world. As we said before, God 00:02:06.72\00:02:11.66 has solved our past, he has settled our future and so we are 00:02:11.69\00:02:16.60 able to face the present persecution. Okay? Um, the 00:02:16.64\00:02:21.02 return of Christ is the motive force for our pursuit of purity. 00:02:21.05\00:02:25.95 He talks about the revelation of Jesus Christ and how we are to 00:02:25.99\00:02:31.04 have a pure life. It is assured by the resurrection of Christ 00:02:31.07\00:02:36.78 that is referred to in Chapter 1 and again in Chapter 3 and it is 00:02:36.81\00:02:42.48 coming soon and he refers to that in Chapter 1:4 and 5. 00:02:42.52\00:02:46.47 It will include just judgment on evil and honor for those who do 00:02:46.51\00:02:51.10 the will of God. It is fairly obvious that in 1 Peter the 00:02:51.14\00:02:54.81 second coming of Jesus is positive motivation for 00:02:54.84\00:02:58.23 faithfulness and a warning to the world of coming judgment. 00:02:58.26\00:03:02.04 In 2 Peter the focus revolves around responding to the false 00:03:02.07\00:03:05.82 teachers that question the second coming. They have a 00:03:05.85\00:03:09.62 mistaken view as we are going to see; a mistaken view of the past 00:03:09.65\00:03:13.74 It's interesting you know how Peter deals with things in the 00:03:13.78\00:03:17.17 past and now things in the future. They see a uniform, 00:03:17.20\00:03:21.20 these false teachers, see a uniform type of history behind 00:03:21.23\00:03:24.73 them and they think that that portends that the future also 00:03:24.77\00:03:28.35 will be quite uniform. Peter responds by correcting their 00:03:28.38\00:03:31.39 view of the past. He said, No, God intervened in the past. 00:03:31.42\00:03:34.64 He was both the creator of the world and the destroyer of the 00:03:34.67\00:03:40.31 world with the flood in the days of Noah. And this event of the 00:03:40.34\00:03:45.95 past where God intervened portends what is going to happen 00:03:45.98\00:03:49.39 in the future. God is going to destroy the wicked world and 00:03:49.42\00:03:53.56 he's going to redeem those who have trusted in Christ and he 00:03:53.60\00:03:58.17 also takes time to explain the delay, the seeming delay, with 00:03:58.21\00:04:02.02 reference to the mercy of God and he reasserts the certainty 00:04:02.05\00:04:05.37 of the second coming of Jesus. He indicates that this return of 00:04:05.41\00:04:08.70 Christ calls for a holy and focused life. 00:04:08.73\00:04:11.99 So what are some of these false teachings then that these 00:04:12.03\00:04:15.44 teachers are teaching? 00:04:15.48\00:04:16.85 All right the false teachers are teaching... Let's turn and read 00:04:16.88\00:04:21.14 our passage. We're reading today 2 Peter 3 verses 1-7. 00:04:21.17\00:04:29.11 Beloved I now write to you the second epistle in both of which 00:04:29.15\00:04:33.28 I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder that you may be 00:04:33.31\00:04:36.94 mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy 00:04:36.98\00:04:40.53 prophets and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord 00:04:40.57\00:04:44.64 and Savior. Knowing this first that scoffers will come in the 00:04:44.67\00:04:48.69 last days walking according to their own lusts and saying where 00:04:48.72\00:04:52.70 is the promise of his coming, for since the fathers fell 00:04:52.73\00:04:55.62 asleep all things continue as they were from the beginning of 00:04:55.66\00:04:58.96 creation. For this they willfully forget that by the 00:04:59.00\00:05:03.09 word of God the heavens were of old and the earth standing out 00:05:03.12\00:05:06.72 of water and in the water by which the world then that 00:05:06.76\00:05:11.26 existed perished being flooded with water. But the heavens and 00:05:11.30\00:05:15.24 the earth which are now preserved by the same word are 00:05:15.28\00:05:18.83 reserved for fire unto the day of judgment and perdition of 00:05:18.86\00:05:22.85 ungodly men. All right. So here he comes to 00:05:22.89\00:05:26.96 attack these false teachers directly now. It's interesting, 00:05:26.99\00:05:30.88 he starts the chapter by saying this is the second letter so 00:05:30.92\00:05:34.89 there has to be a first if this is the second letter. And he 00:05:34.93\00:05:39.53 refers back to this reminder, the idea of remembering, that we 00:05:39.57\00:05:44.13 talked about in chapter 1 where he knows that he is going to die 00:05:44.16\00:05:48.69 and he wants to leave a testament, a message for people 00:05:48.72\00:05:53.34 to observe and to listen to and we're going to find out all 00:05:53.38\00:05:56.88 through this kind of passage that the idea of remembering is 00:05:56.91\00:06:01.06 very important, forgetting and remembering. So we come into 00:06:01.09\00:06:05.48 verse 3 and we actually meet the statements of these false 00:06:05.52\00:06:10.97 teachers. Let me first read what they said. You read it and we 00:06:11.01\00:06:15.29 notice in verse 3, Knowing this that first of all scoffers will 00:06:15.33\00:06:19.58 come in the last days with scoffing following their own 00:06:19.61\00:06:22.71 sinful desires. They will say where is the promise of his 00:06:22.75\00:06:26.10 coming. For ever since the fathers fell asleep all things 00:06:26.14\00:06:29.73 are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation. 00:06:29.77\00:06:33.79 The first thing we notice about these people is their method of 00:06:33.83\00:06:37.81 approach and their method of approach is mockery. What is 00:06:37.85\00:06:46.75 mockery. How would you describe it? 00:06:46.78\00:06:48.15 Making fun of. Making fun. Okay. Sure. It is 00:06:48.18\00:06:53.40 holding up an idea to ridicule. Who would be so foolish as to 00:06:53.43\00:06:59.67 believe that idea? Right? And mockery is not really an 00:06:59.71\00:07:06.10 intellectual argument. It's based on intimidation, making 00:07:06.13\00:07:10.93 something look silly and foolish so people won't accept it. 00:07:10.97\00:07:17.67 So actually mockery typically covers up a weak argument and 00:07:17.71\00:07:23.87 discourages investigation. Their argument that they're going to 00:07:23.91\00:07:30.03 present is based on the idea that the second coming is 00:07:30.07\00:07:34.50 delayed. They say where is the promise of his coming? And it's 00:07:34.54\00:07:39.82 a sarcastic kind of a question. And then they support this idea 00:07:39.85\00:07:45.09 with a concept... they talk about the fathers who fell 00:07:45.13\00:07:49.29 asleep and all continues as it was from creation. So we've 00:07:49.33\00:07:53.42 got to unpack this argument just a little bit. The first think we 00:07:53.45\00:07:57.65 notice is that Peter is a person who has no problem with 00:07:57.69\00:08:02.71 investigation. He just doesn't say don't believe those false 00:08:02.74\00:08:06.68 teachers. Don't look at their books. Don't talk about it. Just 00:08:06.72\00:08:10.62 you know stop. That would be intimidation itself you see. 00:08:10.66\00:08:15.20 But he doesn't simply give commands. He says well let's 00:08:15.23\00:08:19.46 look at their ideas. And he takes them seriously and he 00:08:19.50\00:08:23.66 quotes them. I don't know if they would have quoted Peter but 00:08:23.70\00:08:27.80 he quotes them. Then he takes and deconstructs their argument 00:08:27.84\00:08:31.68 and shows where it's weaknesses are. But the first thing we 00:08:31.71\00:08:36.32 notice is that they start with mockery. It's a very poor 00:08:36.35\00:08:40.59 teaching technique. A good teacher doesn't use mockery. 00:08:40.63\00:08:44.54 He doesn't try to intimidate his students or her students, 00:08:44.57\00:08:49.09 doesn't put them down so that they feel like they can't ask 00:08:49.12\00:08:53.61 questions. Because good questions are the keys, the 00:08:53.64\00:08:56.98 golden opportunities for teaching, for education. 00:08:57.01\00:09:00.28 I always try to encourage students to speak up in class 00:09:00.31\00:09:04.68 and to respond to what I'm saying, tell me if I'm making a 00:09:04.72\00:09:08.34 mistake and then we can have a good discussion and then you 00:09:08.37\00:09:11.92 have good learning taking place. Now scholars who look at 2 Peter 00:09:11.95\00:09:17.07 and think that it is written later like in the second century 00:09:17.10\00:09:21.14 instead of being written by the apostle Peter, they look at the 00:09:21.18\00:09:25.13 words that are referred to here of the false teachers that ever 00:09:25.16\00:09:28.74 since the fathers fell asleep everything continues as it was 00:09:28.77\00:09:32.48 from creation. And they say Ah-ha. You see the fathers they 00:09:32.51\00:09:36.95 say, the fathers is the first generation of Christians and 00:09:36.98\00:09:41.35 these people have moved off the scene, they've died, and now 00:09:41.38\00:09:44.77 this is the second and third generation of Christians. These 00:09:44.80\00:09:47.98 are people who are later. Well there are two problems, two 00:09:48.02\00:09:51.12 problems with that position. The first is that the term fathers 00:09:51.16\00:09:55.80 in early Christian literature is typically a reference back to 00:09:55.83\00:10:00.20 Old Testament believers, back to the Old Testament. Second, the 00:10:00.23\00:10:04.52 next phrase that Peter states in their argument, ever since 00:10:04.56\00:10:08.81 the fathers fell asleep all continues as it was from 00:10:08.85\00:10:11.36 creation refers all the way back to creation. So it would be a 00:10:11.40\00:10:15.30 little odd going all the way back to creation and then saying 00:10:15.34\00:10:19.04 Oh and these people that just died recently. It's more likely 00:10:19.07\00:10:23.26 they're looking back, back to the Old Testament, ever since 00:10:23.29\00:10:27.10 the father fell asleep, that long chain of people going all 00:10:27.13\00:10:31.07 the way back to creation. Everything just continues the 00:10:31.10\00:10:34.97 same as it was from the days of creation. Well they argue for a 00:10:35.00\00:10:42.31 certain sense of continuity. Things continue as... Sort of a 00:10:42.35\00:10:49.62 teaching of uniformitarianism. Now this is not the 00:10:49.66\00:10:53.95 uniformitarianism that comes centuries and centuries later 00:10:53.99\00:10:59.82 that is linked up with evolutionary theory that you 00:10:59.85\00:11:04.26 have this gradual development and that the world's geological 00:11:04.30\00:11:08.71 column has uniformly been laid down and if you know that it's 00:11:08.75\00:11:12.63 lain down one inch a year and you know something that's 100 00:11:12.66\00:11:16.48 feet you can figure out how long it's taken for that to lay down. 00:11:16.51\00:11:19.86 That's the concept of uniformitarianism. But these 00:11:19.90\00:11:23.54 teachers have something that kind of echoes that; it kind of 00:11:23.57\00:11:26.39 goes along with that kind of idea because they talk about 00:11:26.43\00:11:32.72 everything going back to the creation and that there hasn't 00:11:32.75\00:11:37.86 been this change. So the past is a predictor of the future. 00:11:37.90\00:11:42.94 There's not been this change and so in the future, you know, this 00:11:42.98\00:11:47.57 coming that they've promised is just a fake idea. So they have a 00:11:47.60\00:11:51.75 very interesting kind of way of teaching this. There are three 00:11:51.78\00:11:55.89 main characteristics to their teaching: Eschatological 00:11:55.93\00:11:58.55 skepticism, they don't believe that Jesus is coming back. They 00:11:58.59\00:12:02.36 have a sort of common sense rationalism; they argue in terms 00:12:02.39\00:12:05.93 of the ages have all been the same so it's going to be like 00:12:05.97\00:12:09.22 that off into the future. And then, of course, as we saw in 00:12:09.26\00:12:12.69 Chapter 2 they have this concept of moral freedom that they 00:12:12.73\00:12:16.09 promise people even though they themselves are slaves to passion 00:12:16.12\00:12:24.56 So, that's the kind of thing that Peter is going to present 00:12:24.59\00:12:26.74 before us. Now weren't there philosophies 00:12:26.78\00:12:29.55 of the day that argued like this? 00:12:29.58\00:12:31.67 There were and it's rather interesting. There were two 00:12:31.71\00:12:36.39 groups that seemed to have more particular linkage to the false 00:12:36.42\00:12:41.69 teachers in 2 Peter. These are the philosophies of Epicureanism 00:12:41.72\00:12:46.95 and the Jewish sect of the Sadducees. The Epicureans were 00:12:46.99\00:12:54.44 founded by a man named Epicurus, of course, and he lived from 00:12:54.47\00:13:01.44 341 to 270 B.C. So long before the first century A.D. but he 00:13:01.48\00:13:07.84 had followers who still believed what he had to teach. Epicurus 00:13:07.88\00:13:14.21 taught that the purpose of life was simple pleasures, the 00:13:14.24\00:13:19.62 absence of pain. These were more the pleasures of the mind than 00:13:19.65\00:13:22.82 the pleasures of the body that he taught. He believed, this is 00:13:22.85\00:13:26.44 very important, that the gods do not judge, they do not reward 00:13:26.48\00:13:30.29 and they do not punish and there is no providence. The gods 00:13:30.33\00:13:34.36 live far away from the world. And there's no life after death. 00:13:34.39\00:13:37.69 There's no judgment and there's no postmortem retribution. 00:13:37.72\00:13:42.06 So they really kind of almost atheistic, not atheistic, they 00:13:42.09\00:13:46.47 believed in the gods but not their involvement in life right 00:13:46.51\00:13:50.27 now. So we are just at time for a break so we'll come back after 00:13:50.30\00:13:53.79 just a few minutes and talk some more about these philosophies. 00:13:53.83\00:13:57.29
