Hello friends. Welcome to Books of the Book. 00:00:20.94\00:00:23.10 My name is Deyvy Rodriguez and I'm very happy that you're with 00:00:23.14\00:00:26.91 us joining us for this Bible study. We have Dr. Tom Shepherd. 00:00:26.94\00:00:30.17 He comes from Andrews University. He is a professor of 00:00:30.21\00:00:33.48 New Testament interpretation and today we're studying the books 00:00:33.52\00:00:37.55 of 1 and 2 Peter but today we are doing the second chapter 00:00:37.59\00:00:41.59 of 2 Peter, actually the last part of 2 Peter. 00:00:41.62\00:00:47.20 Dr. Shepherd, what are we sharing today? 00:00:47.23\00:00:48.76 Well we looked at the question of the false teachers in 00:00:48.80\00:00:52.55 2 Peter chapter 2 and last time we read verses 1-11. We found 00:00:52.59\00:00:57.62 that he had some pretty strong words to say and so right now 00:00:57.65\00:01:01.60 what we're going to do is read the last half of this chapter. 00:01:01.64\00:01:05.58 It's a little bit longer part of a passage but it's 2 Peter 00:01:05.62\00:01:10.91 2 starting in verse 12 and going through verse 22. So why don't 00:01:10.95\00:01:16.21 you read verses 12-16 and I'll read verses 17-22. 00:01:16.24\00:01:22.22 But these like natural brute beasts made to be caught and 00:01:22.26\00:01:25.96 destroyed speak evil of the things they do not understand 00:01:25.99\00:01:29.62 and will utterly perish in their own corruption and will receive 00:01:29.66\00:01:33.77 the wages of unrighteousness as those who count it pleasure to 00:01:33.81\00:01:38.71 carouse in the daytime. They are spots and blemishes carousing in 00:01:38.75\00:01:42.91 their own deceptions while they feast with you having eyes full 00:01:42.94\00:01:47.49 of adultery and they cannot cease from sin enticing unstable 00:01:47.52\00:01:51.72 souls. They have a heart trained in covetous practices and are 00:01:51.76\00:01:55.90 cursed children. They have forsaken the right way and gone 00:01:55.93\00:01:59.95 astray following the ways of Balaam the son of Baer who loved 00:01:59.98\00:02:03.97 the wages of unrighteousness. But he was rebuked for his 00:02:04.00\00:02:07.42 iniquity. A dumb donkey speaking with a man's voice restrained 00:02:07.46\00:02:11.40 the madness of the prophet. 00:02:11.43\00:02:13.13 Verse 17: These are waterless springs and mists driven by a 00:02:13.17\00:02:18.07 storm. For them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved 00:02:18.10\00:02:22.97 for speaking loud boasts of folly they entice by sensual 00:02:23.00\00:02:26.43 passions of the flesh those who are barely escaping from those 00:02:26.47\00:02:30.55 who live in error. They promise them freedom but they themselves 00:02:30.58\00:02:34.95 are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to 00:02:34.98\00:02:39.32 that he is enslaved. For if after they have escaped the 00:02:39.35\00:02:42.82 defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and 00:02:42.86\00:02:45.72 Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and 00:02:45.75\00:02:49.55 overcome. The last state has become worse for them than the 00:02:49.58\00:02:53.86 first for it would have been better for them never to have 00:02:53.89\00:02:57.73 known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn 00:02:57.76\00:03:01.34 back from the holy commandment delivered to them. What the true 00:03:01.38\00:03:04.93 proverb says has happened to them; the dog returns to it's 00:03:04.96\00:03:09.06 own vomit and the sow after washing herself returns to 00:03:09.09\00:03:12.82 wallow in the mire. Hmm. Now we were saying that the 00:03:12.86\00:03:16.56 angry pastor was applying to Peter. 00:03:16.59\00:03:19.73 Yeah, you can see it here can't you. It's almost like the page 00:03:19.77\00:03:22.07 is still warm. It's like whoa! 00:03:22.10\00:03:24.11 And that he is angry at the false teachers, right? He was 00:03:24.15\00:03:28.61 talking about the false teachers. 00:03:28.64\00:03:31.99 Not the flock. He's not trying to destroy the flock. He's 00:03:32.03\00:03:35.32 talking about those false teachers. So he's protecting 00:03:35.35\00:03:38.50 the sheep and speaking against the false teachers. 00:03:38.53\00:03:41.61 Verse 12 talks about animals and he seems to talk negatively, 00:03:41.65\00:03:47.02 in a bad way, obviously, about animals. What's the matter here? 00:03:47.05\00:03:51.33 Yeah, he says in verse 12, but these, now he's talking about 00:03:51.37\00:03:56.07 the false teachers and then he says, like irrational animals, 00:03:56.10\00:04:01.01 now he's still talking about the animals, creatures of instinct 00:04:01.05\00:04:07.01 born to be caught and destroyed. Blaspheming, now he's talking 00:04:07.05\00:04:12.98 about the false teachers, blaspheming about matters of 00:04:13.01\00:04:16.17 which they are ignorant, will also be destroyed in their 00:04:16.21\00:04:19.20 destruction. So a lot about destruction there and a lot 00:04:19.23\00:04:22.19 about animals that are irrational and born to be 00:04:22.22\00:04:28.02 destroyed. You know, we have a lot of people who really love 00:04:28.06\00:04:32.40 animals and who really care for them in a special way and we 00:04:32.44\00:04:36.75 oppose the idea of abusing animals and so people wonder 00:04:36.78\00:04:41.09 why is Peter talking about this? Why does he speak like this? 00:04:41.13\00:04:45.50 He seems so mean about talking about animals. Well one 00:04:45.53\00:04:52.28 commentator, Peter David, says that we should recognize that 00:04:52.32\00:04:57.55 Peter's subject here is the false teachers and his primary 00:04:57.59\00:05:02.12 presentation here is not about animals, okay. It was common 00:05:02.16\00:05:06.17 enough in the ancient world to speak of animals in this way and 00:05:06.20\00:05:10.31 so on the one hand we should not take Peter's words about the 00:05:10.34\00:05:14.42 false teachers as God's directive on how to treat 00:05:14.45\00:05:18.21 animals. On the other hand, since the false teachers are 00:05:18.25\00:05:21.34 acting like animals which is even a phrase that we use in our 00:05:21.38\00:05:25.74 time today, our own day, the depiction seems apt, kind of a 00:05:25.77\00:05:29.56 simile here that they're acting like this and that's what's 00:05:29.59\00:05:33.31 going to happen to them; they'll find destruction. So this isn't 00:05:33.35\00:05:36.88 a text that tells us how you should treat your dog or your 00:05:36.91\00:05:40.91 cat or any animal. The Bible has other passages that warn us 00:05:40.94\00:05:45.41 that we are to take care of our animals. It talks about not 00:05:45.45\00:05:49.79 muzzling the ox when he is treading the grain and so we 00:05:49.82\00:05:53.67 should care for the creation around us and not abuse it or 00:05:53.71\00:05:57.53 misuse it. Dr. Shepherd, false teachers at 00:05:57.56\00:06:00.27 some point went astray. You know they were good teachers, true 00:06:00.31\00:06:03.59 teachers. We were talking about that in previous programs. 00:06:03.63\00:06:06.88 How does a person walking in God's ways go astray? 00:06:06.91\00:06:13.15 How does a person in the Lord's way suddenly go wrong? 00:06:13.18\00:06:19.35 You know a lot of people think about this. I'm not sure that we 00:06:19.39\00:06:25.11 think about it enough. We think a fair bit about how to bring 00:06:25.14\00:06:29.85 people to Christ. We're thinking of evangelistic approaches. 00:06:29.88\00:06:34.79 What can we do. We talk about how you help people to hear the 00:06:34.82\00:06:38.61 message of the gospel. We talk about what kind of questions you 00:06:38.65\00:06:42.86 would ask a person to make a decision for Christ. But we need 00:06:42.89\00:06:47.07 to study as well how people lose Christ, how they go the 00:06:47.10\00:06:52.28 wrong way. And it's rather shocking how many people go this 00:06:52.32\00:06:57.49 way. I used to travel a fair bit with the students when I was 00:06:57.53\00:07:02.37 a teacher at Union College. We would go to churches all over 00:07:02.41\00:07:07.22 the place giving musical programs, playing my cello and 00:07:07.25\00:07:10.32 string quartet with these young people and I would go to 00:07:10.36\00:07:13.36 churches as small as 25 members. We very commonly went to small 00:07:13.40\00:07:17.46 churches. But I would call ahead to make arrangements and I would 00:07:17.50\00:07:21.43 call the pastor and I would say so how many members do you have 00:07:21.47\00:07:26.60 in your church? And the pastor would say oh we have about 80 00:07:26.63\00:07:30.96 members in our church. Then I knew what was coming next. 00:07:30.99\00:07:37.92 He would say, but about 50% attend, about half go to church. 00:07:37.96\00:07:44.66 So the real membership of the churches, at least those who are 00:07:44.70\00:07:51.37 regularly attending and the membership that there's some 00:07:51.40\00:07:55.65 problems with some issues with our people; about half the 00:07:55.69\00:07:59.87 church. I mean, it's shocking. We talked about in our previous 00:07:59.91\00:08:03.94 program about how a pastor should visit. The first place to 00:08:03.97\00:08:08.00 start is to visit those who have wandered away. Shepherds are 00:08:08.03\00:08:11.66 supposed to go after the sheep and help them come back. So we 00:08:11.69\00:08:16.12 need to think about this how people get saved and about how 00:08:16.15\00:08:21.12 people get lost. There is something I call the circle of 00:08:21.16\00:08:26.06 damnation. Now we talked about the circle of salvation before 00:08:26.10\00:08:29.20 when we talked about 1 Peter, but there's also a circle of 00:08:29.23\00:08:32.77 damnation, that is how people get lost. There's actually two 00:08:32.81\00:08:36.90 circles. There's one that's in 1 Peter and there's another one 00:08:36.94\00:08:41.26 in 2 Peter. And we've described some things, a lot of things in 00:08:41.29\00:08:45.58 1 Peter and I just want to refocus our attention as we 00:08:45.61\00:08:48.49 think about that a little bit about how 1 Peter talks about 00:08:48.53\00:08:51.56 this. The circle of damnation in 1 Peter is implicit. The one in 00:08:51.60\00:08:57.16 2 Peter is explicit. In other words, he doesn't directly 00:08:57.19\00:09:01.18 address it in 1 Peter, but he directly addresses it in 2 Peter 00:09:01.22\00:09:06.53 okay. So we think in 1 Peter, I tell people, I actually got it 00:09:06.57\00:09:11.85 from one of my professors, Dr. Robert Johnston. He had a 00:09:11.88\00:09:15.73 principle he called don't put beans in your nose principle. 00:09:15.76\00:09:20.20 Don't put beans in your nose. Why in the world such a strange 00:09:20.24\00:09:24.63 sounding kind of an idea, Don't put beans in your nose. Well you 00:09:24.67\00:09:28.70 just think about little kids and their playing, and they go into 00:09:28.74\00:09:32.10 the kitchen and they get the mother's jar and they open it up 00:09:32.13\00:09:35.20 and take out some of these dry beans, and they're going outside 00:09:35.23\00:09:37.93 and they're playing with them and they're just doing things 00:09:37.97\00:09:41.31 with them and one of them takes that bean and it just looks so 00:09:41.35\00:09:44.26 interesting and they just put it in their nose. They thought it 00:09:44.29\00:09:47.16 might be fun to put that bean in their nose. So they put that 00:09:47.20\00:09:50.73 bean inside their nose and then they try to get it out and they 00:09:50.76\00:09:54.58 can't get the bean to come out. So they find something around, 00:09:54.62\00:09:57.61 they don't want to tell their mother about this, but they find 00:09:57.65\00:10:00.61 something around and now everybody's becoming interested 00:10:00.64\00:10:03.38 in the bean in the nose. And they find something and they 00:10:03.42\00:10:06.03 poke it in there to try to get the bean to come out and of 00:10:06.06\00:10:08.94 course it just pushes the bean back farther into the nose. 00:10:08.97\00:10:11.78 Now the child is crying and they come into mother and say mother 00:10:11.82\00:10:15.31 there's a bean in my nose. She says, a bean in your nose, 00:10:15.34\00:10:18.66 how did the bean get in your nose? Then the other child says 00:10:18.70\00:10:21.93 oh and tells how it happened. Mother says well let me see and 00:10:21.97\00:10:25.09 they get a flashlight and they are looking. Then she gets some 00:10:25.13\00:10:28.02 tweezers and she reaches up in the nose that's already sore 00:10:28.05\00:10:31.32 and red. She's trying to pull that bean out and she tries and 00:10:31.36\00:10:34.26 tries and it just keeps slipping out of the tweezers and going 00:10:34.29\00:10:37.07 farther in and now the nose is really red and this sounds like 00:10:37.11\00:10:39.86 an Eric B. Hare story. And what do they have to do next? 00:10:39.89\00:10:44.75 Go to the hospital. Go to the emergency room, $100 right off 00:10:44.78\00:10:48.42 the shot there you know just to take care of the bean in the 00:10:48.46\00:10:52.41 nose. The doctor has special tweezers and special things that 00:10:52.45\00:10:55.85 he uses, she uses, to get this bean and they finally get the 00:10:55.89\00:10:59.38 bean out. And they put some medicine on the nose to make it 00:10:59.41\00:11:02.84 feel better. The child is crying but feeling better. And they go 00:11:02.87\00:11:06.77 home and mother gathers all the children around and she says to 00:11:06.81\00:11:12.28 them, what lesson did you learn today? And they all say don't 00:11:12.31\00:11:17.65 put beans in your nose. And it becomes a story in that family 00:11:17.69\00:11:22.10 and don't put beans in your nose. Now you see, when somebody 00:11:22.13\00:11:26.40 says to don't put beans in your nose they say that because, 00:11:26.43\00:11:30.66 because why? Apparently something happened 00:11:30.69\00:11:33.49 before. There was a story to it. 00:11:33.53\00:11:35.20 Somebody was putting beans in their nose, okay. So when you 00:11:35.24\00:11:38.85 have negative commands that say don't do this and don't do that 00:11:38.89\00:11:42.21 and don't do that, when you have those in the Bible they are 00:11:42.24\00:11:46.14 there for a reason. They are there because somebody was doing 00:11:46.18\00:11:50.50 those things, was trying that out, you know, and ended up with 00:11:50.53\00:11:54.97 those problems, okay. So we want to look in 1 Peter and see if we 00:11:55.01\00:11:59.20 can sense some of that implicit negativeness. I would like to 00:11:59.23\00:12:03.23 read 1 Peter 1:13-17. We've read this before, but now we're doing 00:12:03.26\00:12:07.47 it with a little bit different eyes. 1 Peter chapter 1, verses 00:12:07.50\00:12:11.68 13-17. Therefore gird up the loins of your mind. Be sober 00:12:11.71\00:12:17.76 and rest hopefully upon the grace that is to be brought to 00:12:17.79\00:12:23.77 you at the revelation of Jesus Christ, as obedient children not 00:12:23.80\00:12:27.55 conforming yourselves to the former lust as in your ignorance 00:12:27.58\00:12:31.62 but as he who called you is holy you also be holy in all your 00:12:31.65\00:12:35.80 conduct because it is written be holy for I am holy. And if you 00:12:35.84\00:12:39.94 call on the Father who without partiality judges according to 00:12:39.97\00:12:44.03 each one's work, conduct yourself throughout the time 00:12:44.07\00:12:47.25 of your stay here in fear. 00:12:47.28\00:12:50.44 Yes. Now there are a lot of commands here and he's talking 00:12:50.47\00:12:53.37 about what you're supposed to do. You're supposed to do this, 00:12:53.40\00:12:56.26 and you better respect God, you better be in reverent fear 00:12:56.30\00:13:00.52 before God. Why does he tell them all this? Well because 00:13:00.56\00:13:04.71 there was always the risk that they would go back to the pagan 00:13:04.74\00:13:08.18 way of life, you see. Now let's turn over in the same book to 00:13:08.22\00:13:11.62 chapter 4, verse 15. But let none of you suffer as a 00:13:11.65\00:13:18.74 murderer, a thief, an evildoer or as a busybody in other 00:13:18.78\00:13:25.84 people's matters. So here see you mustn't be doing 00:13:25.87\00:13:30.30 this, you mustn't be doing this, you mustn't go this kind of way. 00:13:30.34\00:13:32.96 Of course that's what the pagans were saying about them, but 00:13:33.00\00:13:35.18 there was a risk that they might go off into that pattern of life 00:13:35.22\00:13:39.66 they might do something that was along those lines. So this is 00:13:39.70\00:13:44.31 the kind of expression that they're not supposed to follow 00:13:44.35\00:13:48.08 the passions that would pull them back into the pagan way of 00:13:48.11\00:13:51.85 life. But Peter also warns them about the push of persecution 00:13:51.89\00:13:55.30 that could come their way and let's read 1 Peter 3 verses 5 00:13:55.34\00:13:58.71 and 6. For in this manner in former 00:13:58.75\00:14:04.05 times the holy women who trusted in God also adorned themselves 00:14:04.08\00:14:08.35 being submissive to their own husbands as Sarah obeyed 00:14:08.39\00:14:11.79 Abraham calling him lord, whose daughters you are if you do good 00:14:11.82\00:14:15.86 and are not afraid with any terror. 00:14:15.90\00:14:19.13 In my version the last part says if you do good and do not fear 00:14:19.16\00:14:22.67 anything that is frightening. This is the intimidation that 00:14:22.71\00:14:28.23 could come from the outsider for them to submit and to go 00:14:28.27\00:14:32.77 the pagan way, not just submit to God but submit to the wrong 00:14:32.81\00:14:37.28 way. So he has both the expression of the problem of 00:14:37.31\00:14:41.39 passion and the problem of persecution, this implicit 00:14:41.43\00:14:45.44 circle of damnation that could take them out of the circle of 00:14:45.48\00:14:49.29 blessing, out of the household of faith. Well we've got more 00:14:49.33\00:14:53.76 to talk about in terms of the explicit circle of damnation 00:14:53.79\00:14:58.15 that's in 2 Peter and we'll come back to that after this break. 00:14:58.19\00:15:02.58
