¤ ¤ 00:00:02.00\00:00:19.40 Hello and welcome to Books of the Book. 00:00:19.43\00:00:22.89 This is a program where we study 00:00:22.93\00:00:24.30 the Bible and we take a book from the Bible and we study it 00:00:24.33\00:00:28.46 thoroughly. Today we're talking about the writings of Peter. 00:00:28.50\00:00:32.87 With us is Dr. Tom Shepherd. He is a New Testament 00:00:32.91\00:00:35.36 Interpretation professor at Andrews University. Dr. Shepherd 00:00:35.40\00:00:39.51 the program title for today is The Angry Pastor. What's up with 00:00:39.55\00:00:43.63 that? Well church services that you 00:00:43.67\00:00:47.96 remember well are interesting. They usually come in two types. 00:00:47.99\00:00:52.19 Either it's one where you were deeply blessed. The word of God 00:00:52.22\00:00:55.70 just spoke to you, the Holy Spirit touched your heart, you 00:00:55.73\00:00:59.22 gave your life to Jesus or you saw some new wonderful truth. 00:00:59.25\00:01:03.08 That's one type of unforgettable church service. The other type 00:01:03.11\00:01:07.41 of unforgettable church service is when something goes terribly 00:01:07.44\00:01:12.60 wrong. And I have a story. It's from an unknown time, unknown 00:01:12.64\00:01:17.85 place, you know distant and all that, long ago far away type of 00:01:17.88\00:01:23.94 thing. It was a Sabbath morning and the pastor, I don't quite 00:01:23.98\00:01:29.17 remember why but the pastor was angry. He was angry with the 00:01:29.21\00:01:34.76 church. And the pastor stood up in the pulpit and took his Bible 00:01:34.79\00:01:40.31 and he was turning from text to text and he was just really 00:01:40.34\00:01:44.40 giving it to the congregation and telling them how they had 00:01:44.44\00:01:48.35 done things wrong and how bad they were and he was really 00:01:48.38\00:01:52.44 quite upset and he talked for about 15 minutes, he shut his 00:01:52.47\00:01:56.83 Bible and he walked right out of the church. And we were just 00:01:56.86\00:02:02.51 all stunned in this service. I mean when the pastor walks out 00:02:02.54\00:02:06.95 usually you're going to go shake his hand you know but there was 00:02:06.99\00:02:11.36 no closing hymn and everybody was just kind of... they were 00:02:11.40\00:02:14.63 just stunned by this whole experience. 00:02:14.67\00:02:16.08 It would make me think did he have the problem or was the 00:02:16.12\00:02:19.28 problem with the church? Well, probably the answer is Yes 00:02:19.32\00:02:22.41 We formed a little committee and we went and we saw our pastor 00:02:22.45\00:02:28.20 and we found reconciliation and I'm still friends with this 00:02:28.24\00:02:33.82 pastor today. But it was something that kind of shocked 00:02:33.85\00:02:39.37 people. When somebody gets so angry in church we're not used 00:02:39.40\00:02:43.03 to that. This is kind of a preamble to what we're going to 00:02:43.07\00:02:46.62 read here in 2 Peter chapter 2. We're going to start in verse 1. 00:02:46.66\00:02:51.52 The whole chapter has this rather angry pastor tone to it 00:02:51.55\00:02:56.97 and we're going to read for... We're going to talk about this 00:02:57.00\00:03:02.53 passage of scripture, 2 Peter chapter 2 during this program 00:03:02.57\00:03:07.23 and the one following and we're going to talk about the people 00:03:07.27\00:03:11.21 that are involved in this story, but we're going to start by 00:03:11.24\00:03:16.31 reading chapter 2 verses 1-11, 2 Peter 2:1-11. It's a little 00:03:16.35\00:03:20.65 bit of a longer passage so I'll read the first three verses and 00:03:20.69\00:03:24.95 then you can read the next part. But false prophets also arose 00:03:24.98\00:03:29.18 among the people just as there will be false teachers among 00:03:29.21\00:03:33.49 you who will secretly bring in destructive heresies even 00:03:33.53\00:03:37.50 denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves 00:03:37.54\00:03:42.01 swift destruction. And many will follow their sensuality and 00:03:42.05\00:03:46.00 because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed and in their 00:03:46.03\00:03:50.11 greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation 00:03:50.14\00:03:54.15 from long ago is not idle and their destruction is not asleep. 00:03:54.19\00:03:59.53 And we're in verse 4: For if God did not spare the angles who 00:03:59.57\00:04:03.55 sinned but cast them down to hell and delivered them into 00:04:03.59\00:04:07.49 chains of darkness to be reserved for judgment and did 00:04:07.52\00:04:11.36 not spare the ancient world but saved Noah, one of eight people, 00:04:11.39\00:04:14.89 a preacher of righteousness bringing in the flood on the 00:04:14.92\00:04:19.05 ungodly and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes 00:04:19.08\00:04:23.15 to condemn them to destruction making them an example to those 00:04:23.19\00:04:27.70 who afterward would live ungodly and delivered righteous Lot who 00:04:27.73\00:04:32.21 was oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked. For that 00:04:32.24\00:04:35.66 righteous man dwelling among them tormented his righteous 00:04:35.69\00:04:39.04 soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their lawless deeds. 00:04:39.08\00:04:43.06 Then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of 00:04:43.10\00:04:46.50 temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the 00:04:46.54\00:04:50.02 day of judgment and especially those who walk according to the 00:04:50.05\00:04:53.76 flesh and the lust of uncleanness and despise authority. They are 00:04:53.79\00:04:57.82 presumptuous, self-ruled. They are not afraid to speak evil of 00:04:57.86\00:05:01.91 dignitaries whereas angels who were greater in power and might 00:05:01.94\00:05:05.96 do not bring reviling accusations against them before 00:05:05.99\00:05:11.37 the Lord. Well we've started off here. It says Peter... 00:05:11.41\00:05:16.72 The page almost feels warm even after 2000 years and we will see 00:05:16.75\00:05:19.09 as we get to the last part of the chapter it's even warmer. 00:05:19.13\00:05:21.63 Yes. So the angry pastor you're talking about is Peter. 00:05:21.66\00:05:25.83 Okay. In verse 1 of chapter 2 Peter says that there will be 00:05:25.87\00:05:32.03 false prophets among you. Wasn't there already false prophets? 00:05:32.07\00:05:38.20 Why does he say that there will be as if there wasn't? 00:05:38.23\00:05:41.04 Yeah. It's very interesting. Here he describes them as though 00:05:41.08\00:05:46.53 they're in the future and yet when you get further into the 00:05:46.57\00:05:50.99 chapter and especially when you get into chapter 3 is sounds 00:05:51.02\00:05:55.17 that they're right there right then. It's like he's kind of 00:05:55.20\00:05:59.58 mixing these two together and this becomes a useful time for 00:05:59.61\00:06:03.79 us to discuss the relationship between 2 Peter and Jude. 00:06:03.83\00:06:07.78 Now when we first talked about 2 Peter we briefly mentioned 00:06:07.82\00:06:11.73 that there is a literary relationship between the two 00:06:11.77\00:06:16.28 books and it has led many scholars to think that actually 00:06:16.31\00:06:21.30 that Jude was written first and then the author of 2 Peter 00:06:21.34\00:06:27.12 borrowed from Jude when he was writing 2 Peter. Now you can 00:06:27.15\00:06:32.86 still argue that Peter wrote the book and he used somebody else's 00:06:32.90\00:06:36.11 writing. We know that that happens sometimes that people 00:06:36.14\00:06:39.28 will make use of somebody else's work and that in the ancient 00:06:39.32\00:06:43.72 world this wouldn't be... You know we have modern laws of 00:06:43.75\00:06:47.96 plagiarism we talk about and those laws are kind of a recent 00:06:48.00\00:06:52.17 kind of development in relationship to publication but 00:06:52.20\00:06:55.72 it wouldn't be necessarily an issue for Peter in his time. 00:06:55.75\00:06:59.23 But we want to kind of understand the relationship 00:06:59.27\00:07:02.69 between these two books and it helps us to understand what's 00:07:02.72\00:07:06.90 going on in 2 Peter 2 when he uses a future tense, okay. 00:07:06.94\00:07:10.78 First there is a close link between the two books, a 00:07:10.82\00:07:14.31 literary linkage and the question comes as to which of 00:07:14.34\00:07:17.76 the two books was written first. There is evidence that actually 00:07:17.80\00:07:22.62 Jude used Peter. Now some people say it's the other direction, 00:07:22.65\00:07:27.61 that Peter used Jude but I lay out before people two concepts 00:07:27.65\00:07:33.08 that help point toward Jude as using 2 Peter. There is a change 00:07:33.11\00:07:38.49 of tense in Peter. It says that the false prophets will come, 00:07:38.52\00:07:45.85 the false teachers will come and in Jude verse 4 it says that 00:07:45.88\00:07:53.18 they're here, they've come, they're already present. 00:07:53.21\00:07:55.72 So Peter is predicting them and Jude says here they are, they've 00:07:55.76\00:08:00.53 come. So that would suggest that Peter's written earlier, he's 00:08:00.56\00:08:04.78 predicting what will happen and Jude says what Peter predicted 00:08:04.81\00:08:09.31 here it is, it's already arrived But one of the most interesting 00:08:09.34\00:08:13.68 linkages between the two books is the relationship between Jude 00:08:13.71\00:08:18.67 verse 17 and 18, and 2 Peter 3 verses 3 and 4 that we're going 00:08:18.70\00:08:23.12 to study a little later in these programs. So we have a graphic 00:08:23.15\00:08:27.53 here of this relationship between Jude 17 and 18 and 00:08:27.57\00:08:32.63 2 Peter verses 3 and 4 and we 00:08:32.67\00:08:35.72 get a picture of the text and 00:08:35.76\00:08:38.49 you'll notice that if we read 00:08:38.53\00:08:41.40 the part about Jude it says 00:08:41.44\00:08:44.91 that you'll see there I've 00:08:44.95\00:08:47.53 underlined certain words, the 00:08:47.57\00:08:50.06 predictions of the apostles it 00:08:50.09\00:08:52.42 says of our Lord Jesus Christ. 00:08:52.46\00:08:54.73 It said, They said to you in the 00:08:54.76\00:08:56.99 last times there will be 00:08:57.03\00:08:58.42 scoffers following their own 00:08:58.45\00:09:00.89 ungodly passions. Okay. And of 00:09:00.92\00:09:03.16 course this has its closest link 00:09:03.20\00:09:06.24 to 2 Peter chapter 3 and it says 00:09:06.28\00:09:08.75 he also refers to predictions of 00:09:08.78\00:09:11.22 the holy prophets and the 00:09:11.25\00:09:12.62 commandment of the Lord and 00:09:12.65\00:09:14.02 Savior through your apostles 00:09:14.05\00:09:15.42 knowing this first that scoffers 00:09:15.45\00:09:16.98 will come in the last days with 00:09:17.01\00:09:18.52 scoffing following their own 00:09:18.55\00:09:20.95 sinful desires. And then they go 00:09:20.98\00:09:23.59 on to say where is this promised 00:09:23.62\00:09:26.43 second coming. Now it's very 00:09:26.47\00:09:28.84 interesting if you look at these 00:09:28.87\00:09:30.79 two passages carefully, there's 00:09:30.82\00:09:33.09 very clear literary relationship 00:09:33.13\00:09:35.54 between the two passages and 00:09:35.58\00:09:38.07 Jude says he's quoting somebody. 00:09:38.11\00:09:41.31 He's quoting somebody. And the 00:09:41.35\00:09:44.28 interesting thing is there is 00:09:44.32\00:09:47.18 no other text in the New Testament that has such a close 00:09:47.22\00:09:51.27 relationship, very close relationship to the words in 00:09:51.31\00:09:55.30 Jude as these words in 2 Peter. Now if Jude was written first 00:09:55.33\00:10:02.95 and Peter, or whoever, is using Jude to write his document, then 00:10:02.99\00:10:10.95 we're left with the question, so who was Jude quoting? But if 00:10:10.98\00:10:16.73 Peter writes first, it's obvious who Jude is quoting. He's 00:10:16.76\00:10:22.47 quoting from Peter. Because there is no good parallel 00:10:22.50\00:10:26.58 elsewhere in the New Testament for these words in Jude it makes 00:10:26.61\00:10:31.94 sense that 2 Peter was written first and Jude is quoting 00:10:31.97\00:10:35.71 2 Peter and that Peter talks about the false teachers coming 00:10:35.74\00:10:39.81 and it seems as though they're already on their way. Maybe they 00:10:39.84\00:10:42.78 have arrived. Remember Peter is writing to a group of people 00:10:42.81\00:10:47.01 over a broad area of territory. Some of them may have already 00:10:47.04\00:10:50.44 arrived and were arriving in other churches and Peter says 00:10:50.48\00:10:53.33 they're coming, they're coming, they're going to be here soon 00:10:53.36\00:10:56.17 and Jude when he writes says they've already gotten here, 00:10:56.20\00:10:58.98 here they are. And if they're coming from 00:10:59.01\00:11:01.58 somewhere, where are they coming from and how do these false 00:11:01.61\00:11:04.92 teachers or how did these teachers become false? 00:11:04.96\00:11:07.84 Aw, well, that's a great question, but before I go there 00:11:07.87\00:11:11.87 I need to lay out the linkage between 2 Peter chapter 2 and 00:11:11.91\00:11:15.87 2 Peter chapter 3. We have 00:11:15.91\00:11:19.11 another graphic here that shows 00:11:19.15\00:11:20.82 the comparison between these 00:11:20.86\00:11:23.04 two. It's quite interesting. 00:11:23.07\00:11:25.25 You'll see there the parallel 00:11:25.29\00:11:26.80 pattern deals with the Old 00:11:26.84\00:11:28.29 Testament, the Christian setting 00:11:28.32\00:11:30.59 the warning and the two paths 00:11:30.62\00:11:32.96 and there are false prophets in 00:11:32.99\00:11:36.48 2 Peter 2 and there are true 00:11:36.52\00:11:38.66 prophets, these are the prophets 00:11:38.69\00:11:40.55 that refer to the text we just 00:11:40.58\00:11:42.83 looked at in 2 Peter 3. There 00:11:42.87\00:11:44.98 are false teachers and they are 00:11:45.01\00:11:46.99 the mockers that are there in 00:11:47.02\00:11:49.11 chapter 3. There's a warning 00:11:49.14\00:11:51.08 about their destruction, their 00:11:51.11\00:11:53.02 heresies. Many will be deceived 00:11:53.06\00:11:55.06 in chapter 2 and then he says 00:11:55.10\00:11:56.86 you know that the mockers will 00:11:56.90\00:11:58.54 question the second coming in 00:11:58.58\00:12:00.41 chapter 3 and then the two paths 00:12:00.45\00:12:02.01 to destructions for the false 00:12:02.05\00:12:03.42 teachers, salvation for the 00:12:03.45\00:12:04.82 righteous is one of the themes 00:12:04.85\00:12:06.79 of 2 Peter 2 and you'll notice 00:12:06.82\00:12:08.43 defeating the false teachers and 00:12:08.46\00:12:10.14 protecting the Christians from 00:12:10.18\00:12:11.93 destruction, the destruction of 00:12:11.96\00:12:13.78 the wicked and salvation in 00:12:13.81\00:12:15.56 chapter 3. So the two chapters really kind of have a parallel 00:12:15.59\00:12:19.31 structure to them and help us to recognize what's going on and 00:12:19.35\00:12:23.59 how he is fighting these false teachers in both chapters and he 00:12:23.63\00:12:27.83 comes at it in a little bit different way. In chapter 2 he 00:12:27.87\00:12:30.91 is going to focus on the questions of their deceptive 00:12:30.94\00:12:34.83 character and what they're like and then finally in chapter 3 00:12:34.87\00:12:37.89 he's going to get down to the issues and start talking about 00:12:37.93\00:12:41.49 what they actually said and how Christians can understand that, 00:12:41.53\00:12:46.19 counter that and be secure in the truth. Peter is angry and 00:12:46.23\00:12:51.40 he's angry for a good reason because somebody is threatening 00:12:51.44\00:12:56.26 his flock. He's a good shepherd and he's watching over these 00:12:56.30\00:13:00.90 people and when wolves start to come towards the flock the 00:13:00.93\00:13:05.46 shepherd takes out his club and starts swinging because it's no 00:13:05.50\00:13:10.72 small matter. So he's angry in a good way? 00:13:10.75\00:13:14.23 In a good way, that's exactly right. You see if you were next 00:13:14.26\00:13:17.90 to a precipice next to a cliff and you were about to fall off 00:13:17.94\00:13:21.13 and I said, Oh Deyvy, please come away from the cliff, you 00:13:21.16\00:13:24.53 might get hurt. And you fell off Woo hoo and I said Deyvy it's 00:13:24.57\00:13:28.58 too bad you didn't hear what I said. No, we have to give clear 00:13:28.61\00:13:31.64 warnings. Sometimes you speak a little more loudly. You pull 00:13:31.68\00:13:34.64 somebody out of the street that is about to be hit by a car. 00:13:34.68\00:13:38.20 So Peter is doing some of this very kind of thing. He's warning 00:13:38.24\00:13:42.07 them very carefully about what is coming and how these false 00:13:42.11\00:13:45.88 teachers will mislead them. Well we'll take a break right at this 00:13:45.91\00:13:49.03 point because we need time for a little bit of messages. We'll be 00:13:49.07\00:13:52.16 back to talk more about 2 Peter chapter 2. 00:13:52.19\00:13:55.60
