Hello and welcome to Books of the Book. 00:00:20.97\00:00:22.87 My name is Deyvy Rodriguez and I'm very happy that you're with 00:00:22.91\00:00:25.68 us to join us in this Bible study. Dr. Shepherd, 00:00:25.71\00:00:29.73 Tom Shepherd, is with us from Andrews University. He's a 00:00:29.77\00:00:33.04 Professor of New Testament interpretation and he is here 00:00:33.08\00:00:36.41 with us to help us study on the books of 1 and 2 Peter. 00:00:36.45\00:00:39.71 Right now we are on the first chapter of the book of 2 Peter 00:00:39.75\00:00:44.37 again and we're starting off in verse 16. Dr. Shepherd, why 00:00:44.40\00:00:48.99 does Peter begin with a disclaimer in this verse? 00:00:49.02\00:00:55.37 This verse, in verse 16, he says "For we did not follow cleverly 00:00:55.41\00:00:59.01 devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of 00:00:59.05\00:01:02.62 our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eye witnesses of his 00:01:02.65\00:01:05.86 majesty. " It's always interesting when somebody starts 00:01:05.89\00:01:09.03 with a disclaimer. If you came home and you said, You know I 00:01:09.07\00:01:14.19 wasn't driving fast down main street this evening. Everybody 00:01:14.22\00:01:18.77 knows there's some kind of story that you have to tell. Because 00:01:18.80\00:01:23.32 maybe you met somebody with a red light on his car and he 00:01:23.35\00:01:27.42 thought that you were driving fast down main street and you 00:01:27.45\00:01:31.49 might even have a little souvenir to show for that. 00:01:31.52\00:01:34.13 So the disclaimer points to something behind it, some story 00:01:34.17\00:01:39.32 behind it. So when Peter says we weren't following cunningly 00:01:39.36\00:01:44.49 devised myths, well then obviously there was somebody who 00:01:44.52\00:01:49.44 said they were following these cunningly devised myths and 00:01:49.48\00:01:53.85 that's exactly what our whole passage is about and the whole 00:01:53.88\00:01:57.37 book is about because Peter is fighting with false teachers. 00:01:57.40\00:02:00.86 What are these false teachers doing? They're trying to 00:02:00.89\00:02:03.61 undermine the authority of the apostles. And how do they do 00:02:03.65\00:02:07.88 that? They say, Aw these people you know, they are just making 00:02:07.91\00:02:12.11 things up. They made up these stories and came to these 00:02:12.14\00:02:16.83 conclusions. You can't trust those people. 00:02:16.86\00:02:18.91 They're untrustworthy. So he has to defend his apostleship. 00:02:18.94\00:02:24.59 He has to defend his ability to teach the people. 00:02:24.63\00:02:29.74 So he's really saying, Hey we're not the ones listening to these 00:02:29.78\00:02:32.53 cunning tales or stories. The others are the ones that have 00:02:32.57\00:02:37.19 come up with that. 00:02:37.22\00:02:38.59 Yeah. I suppose that you could say that different people are 00:02:38.62\00:02:41.16 arguing in terms of who's the false one here and the false 00:02:41.20\00:02:44.38 teachers that Peter has pinpointed in these chapters are 00:02:44.42\00:02:47.83 saying that he's the false prophet, that he's the one 00:02:47.86\00:02:51.24 that you shouldn't trust. 00:02:51.28\00:02:53.07 What topic is Peter talking about here in verse 16. He says 00:02:53.11\00:02:59.07 and the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Yeah, it 00:02:59.10\00:03:03.71 seems he's talking about the second coming because we know 00:03:03.75\00:03:08.32 that Jesus is coming in power and glory. 00:03:08.36\00:03:10.77 Yeah, you just read this and you'd think automatically that 00:03:10.80\00:03:13.46 he was talking about the second coming. We know that the second 00:03:13.50\00:03:16.86 coming is a topic that he will delve into in Chapter 3 and so 00:03:16.89\00:03:20.22 we get that feeling. But then he says, But we were eye 00:03:20.26\00:03:23.50 witnesses of his majesty. So it seems like it can't be the 00:03:23.53\00:03:27.12 second coming that he's talking about because of course we 00:03:27.16\00:03:30.41 haven't been eye witnesses of Jesus' second coming yet. So we 00:03:30.45\00:03:34.51 keep reading and we read verse 17. We're actually reading 00:03:34.55\00:03:38.54 2 Peter 1 verses 16-21 as our topic or passage for this time. 00:03:38.58\00:03:43.39 In verse 17 he says, For when he received honor and glory from 00:03:43.43\00:03:47.62 God the Father and the voice was born to him by the majestic Lord 00:03:47.65\00:03:51.86 This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased. Verse 18, We 00:03:51.89\00:03:56.08 ourselves heard this very voice born from heaven for we were 00:03:56.12\00:04:00.14 with him on the holy mountain. So what does that make you think 00:04:00.18\00:04:04.17 of? The transfiguration? 00:04:04.21\00:04:06.81 Yes. Because Peter was as a witness 00:04:06.84\00:04:09.71 he saw this transfiguration of Jesus. 00:04:09.74\00:04:12.53 Yeah. This is before Jesus goes to Jerusalem and he takes three 00:04:12.57\00:04:16.55 of his disciples, Peter, James and John, and they go up on a 00:04:16.59\00:04:20.68 mountain alone. The other nine are left down below and they go 00:04:20.72\00:04:24.78 up on the mountain. This is reported in Matthew, Mark and 00:04:24.81\00:04:28.01 Luke. If you're interested, sometime you can look. We don't 00:04:28.05\00:04:30.77 have time to go into all this. We have so many things to cover 00:04:30.80\00:04:36.12 in this particular presentation today. But he goes to Matthew 16 00:04:36.15\00:04:41.43 is where it's found, Mark chapter 9 and Luke chapter 9. 00:04:41.46\00:04:44.84 All three of these have the story of Jesus going up on the 00:04:44.87\00:04:49.34 mountain. He mentions in each of these presentations in the 00:04:49.38\00:04:55.02 Gospels three are mentioned in each: There's someone standing 00:04:55.06\00:05:00.26 there seeing this and people experiencing it. Jesus says, 00:05:00.29\00:05:04.75 there are some standing here, before he goes up on the 00:05:04.78\00:05:09.17 mountain he says this there, some standing here. He also says 00:05:09.20\00:05:13.03 They won't taste death, some standing here who will not taste 00:05:13.06\00:05:16.53 death till they see the kingdom of God coming in power or coming 00:05:16.57\00:05:20.41 in glory. Okay. So the three things that are there: some are 00:05:20.44\00:05:24.61 standing here, they won't taste death until they see the kingdom 00:05:24.64\00:05:29.29 of God. Now each of the gospels adds particular little extra 00:05:29.33\00:05:33.30 information. Matthew says the Son of Man, Marks refers to the 00:05:33.34\00:05:38.12 coming in power and Luke simply says the kingdom of God. So it's 00:05:38.15\00:05:42.89 interesting that he says till they see the kingdom of God 00:05:42.93\00:05:45.05 and one of them says kingdom of God coming in power. That makes 00:05:45.08\00:05:49.60 you think of his second coming. But the very next story that is 00:05:49.63\00:05:54.11 referred to is the transfiguration. 00:05:54.14\00:05:55.76 Right. When we look at all of this and we look at what Peter 00:05:55.80\00:06:00.54 says, the way best to explain all this is that the 00:06:00.57\00:06:04.75 transfiguration in some way prefigures the second coming of 00:06:04.78\00:06:10.08 Jesus. The transfiguration in some way prefigures the second 00:06:10.11\00:06:14.81 coming of Jesus. So Peter is stressing the veracity of his 00:06:14.85\00:06:19.22 past experience of the transfiguration to affirm trust 00:06:19.25\00:06:23.55 in what he will say about the future second coming of Jesus. 00:06:23.59\00:06:27.73 So he talks about the past; we were eye witnesses there, and he 00:06:27.76\00:06:32.03 emphasizes that he was eye witness and there are two things 00:06:32.07\00:06:36.31 that they tend to focus on, the visual aspects of the 00:06:36.34\00:06:39.52 transfiguration and the auditory aspects of the transfiguration, 00:06:39.56\00:06:43.12 what they saw and what they heard. 00:06:43.15\00:06:45.70 And they cannot deny that because they saw it. 00:06:45.74\00:06:49.32 Yeah. The personal experience when you have an experience and 00:06:49.35\00:06:53.40 you go someplace and you say, And I was there and I saw it 00:06:53.43\00:06:57.87 myself. I heard with my own ears what he said. That becomes a 00:06:57.91\00:07:02.42 very powerful testimony. So Peter is countering the attacks 00:07:02.45\00:07:05.76 of these false teachers who are going to attack the second 00:07:05.80\00:07:09.03 coming of Jesus and what does he use to do so? He uses this whole 00:07:09.07\00:07:13.96 presentation about the transfiguration as an eye 00:07:13.99\00:07:18.58 witness account of that experience supporting his 00:07:18.61\00:07:23.16 apostleship. Okay. Verse 17 says, For he 00:07:23.20\00:07:26.31 received from God the Father honor and glory when such a 00:07:26.34\00:07:29.61 voice came to him from the Excellent Glory, This is my 00:07:29.64\00:07:32.87 beloved Son in whom I am well pleased. 00:07:32.91\00:07:35.14 What does this verse present? 00:07:35.17\00:07:37.20 Well, this is that presentation of the transfiguration of Jesus 00:07:37.23\00:07:42.61 and we've said it before that there is something going on here 00:07:42.64\00:07:46.96 that we would call a theophany, the appearance of God, when God 00:07:47.00\00:07:50.94 appears and it has pretty much those characteristics that we've 00:07:50.97\00:07:54.88 already referred to before. I'll mention them again. 00:07:54.91\00:07:57.48 Five characteristics of a theophany: The divine glory 00:07:57.51\00:08:01.58 appears, of course on the mountain Jesus is in this 00:08:01.62\00:08:05.61 wonderful glory. Human fear, and of course that's very obvious 00:08:05.65\00:08:09.94 too; they're shaking in their boots and they all kneel down 00:08:09.98\00:08:13.63 kind of. They're all worried like this is the end of their 00:08:13.67\00:08:17.07 lived. The command, Don't be afraid; interestingly that 00:08:17.10\00:08:20.48 doesn't show up in this story so much, don't be afraid. 00:08:20.51\00:08:23.82 A revelation from God. Of course here's the revelation where it 00:08:23.86\00:08:27.91 said, This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased, listen 00:08:27.95\00:08:31.97 to him. And then the human response to the revelation and 00:08:32.00\00:08:35.71 the response to the revelation, the disciples are wondering 00:08:35.74\00:08:39.41 about it. They start asking Jesus questions about it. 00:08:39.45\00:08:42.45 What does this mean? And he gives them more instruction 00:08:42.48\00:08:45.42 about how they're supposed to keep quiet about that. But that 00:08:45.45\00:08:48.58 is a typical theophany, a typical revelation of God and 00:08:48.62\00:08:53.37 confirming to them that Jesus is the Messiah. 00:08:53.41\00:08:56.23 Verse 19: And so we have the prophetic word confirmed which 00:08:56.26\00:09:00.51 you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place 00:09:00.55\00:09:04.54 until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your 00:09:04.57\00:09:08.46 hearts. In this verse is the prophetic word or the word of 00:09:08.49\00:09:12.34 prophecy more sure or made more sure? 00:09:12.38\00:09:15.03 Yeah. Now if you look at this passage in the King James 00:09:15.06\00:09:19.48 Version it'll say, And we have the more sure word of prophecy. 00:09:19.51\00:09:23.92 And my version, which is the New King James, says the prophetic 00:09:23.96\00:09:28.33 word confirmed. Yeah. Here's the English 00:09:28.36\00:09:30.66 Standard Version which interestingly goes with the King 00:09:30.69\00:09:33.95 James. And we have something more sure, the prophetic word 00:09:33.99\00:09:37.17 to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining 00:09:37.21\00:09:40.72 in a dark place until the day dawns and the morning star 00:09:40.76\00:09:43.75 rises in your heart. So we have two different ways that this has 00:09:43.78\00:09:47.84 been translated by the different people. Is it the more sure word 00:09:47.88\00:09:51.90 of prophecy, that is, something more sure than the personal 00:09:51.93\00:09:55.23 experience of the transfiguration or 00:09:55.26\00:09:57.83 is it that the transfiguration now makes the prophetic word 00:09:57.86\00:10:02.46 more sure; we have the prophetic word confirmed, okay, is the way 00:10:02.50\00:10:06.77 the New King James puts it. This is actually an interesting 00:10:06.81\00:10:10.83 question of Greek translation and it's a little bit 00:10:10.86\00:10:13.77 complicated. It has to do with the use of an adjective. 00:10:13.81\00:10:16.65 The adjective is more sure. There are two different ways you 00:10:16.68\00:10:21.06 can use adjectives in Greek and it's a little complicated with 00:10:21.09\00:10:25.27 the word and where's the word the and where does the adjective 00:10:25.31\00:10:29.45 stand and all kinds of things like that but if anybody's 00:10:29.49\00:10:32.98 interested in looking into this in more detail it has to do with 00:10:33.01\00:10:36.37 what's called the predicate position or the attributive 00:10:36.40\00:10:39.09 position of the adjective and the attributive position of the 00:10:39.13\00:10:44.36 adjective you would translate as the more sure word. Okay. 00:10:44.40\00:10:49.60 If it's in the predicate position you would have it 00:10:49.63\00:10:52.44 translated as the prophetic word made more sure. Well it's quite 00:10:52.47\00:10:58.29 clear actually in Greek that this adjective is in the 00:10:58.33\00:11:01.87 predicate position. So your translation in the King James 00:11:01.91\00:11:05.23 there, the New King James, it says we have the prophetic word 00:11:05.26\00:11:08.54 confirmed or we have the prophetic word made more sure 00:11:08.58\00:11:11.69 as some translations may put it. That's probably the more 00:11:11.72\00:11:14.76 accurate way to translate this. Well that immediately gets some 00:11:14.80\00:11:18.72 people concerned because they say, Wait a minute. Are you 00:11:18.75\00:11:24.42 saying then that the personal testimony of the personal 00:11:24.46\00:11:30.06 experience is more important that the scriptures? Won't that 00:11:30.09\00:11:36.13 take you down a very bad road if you think in those kind of 00:11:36.16\00:11:41.76 ways that the prophetic word is not as good as the personal 00:11:41.80\00:11:47.36 testimony or the personal experience. Well the answer 00:11:47.40\00:11:51.50 I give to that is: To start off with, how does Peter describe 00:11:51.54\00:11:56.68 the prophecies? How does he describe the word of God. 00:11:56.71\00:11:59.40 He says we have the prophetic word made more sure. Now think 00:11:59.44\00:12:07.04 about that adjective as one word in Greek, but more sure. What 00:12:07.08\00:12:14.65 does that mean, more sure? 00:12:14.68\00:12:17.34 It almost implies that at one point it wasn't so sure but now 00:12:17.37\00:12:22.22 it's more. It was sure before, but now it's 00:12:22.25\00:12:28.46 more sure. It's better. 00:12:28.49\00:12:30.21 Better, yeah. It's made better than it was, okay. So Peter 00:12:30.24\00:12:34.89 is not saying that the prophetic word is unreliable; it's the 00:12:34.93\00:12:39.54 sure word of prophecy. But there's something that makes 00:12:39.58\00:12:44.20 that word of prophecy more sure for my personal life and that's 00:12:44.24\00:12:53.11 when I have a personal experience of that word of 00:12:53.14\00:12:56.12 prophecy. Peter went through the experience of the 00:12:56.16\00:12:59.07 transfiguration and that confirmed, as your translation 00:12:59.10\00:13:04.89 says, that confirmed to him what the scriptures had already said 00:13:04.93\00:13:10.61 long ago. But when he read it, it didn't have the same power, 00:13:10.65\00:13:15.08 but when he went through the personal experience suddenly it 00:13:15.11\00:13:20.11 came alive and had much greater meaning to him. As I said before 00:13:20.15\00:13:25.11 on one of these programs about the experience my wife and I 00:13:25.15\00:13:28.74 went through in 1997 and we found that the promises of the 00:13:28.77\00:13:32.43 Bible were a wonderful support to us in that time of trouble. 00:13:32.46\00:13:36.70 Well promises start to make more meaning to you when you find 00:13:36.74\00:13:40.54 them sure and true because you went through an experience like 00:13:40.58\00:13:44.35 that. Well, Dr. Shepherd, indeed I 00:13:44.38\00:13:46.66 believe also that it is my personal experience with the 00:13:46.70\00:13:51.09 Lord Jesus Christ that will make the scriptures more powerful 00:13:51.13\00:13:55.22 to me. We'll continue with the study of 2 Peter after this 00:13:55.25\00:13:59.31 short break. 00:13:59.34\00:14:00.71
