And we're back. We are talking of the book 2 Peter and 00:00:01.52\00:00:05.30 Dr. Shepherd is with us. We are talking about this departure. 00:00:05.34\00:00:11.01 Yes. You said the term is exodus. 00:00:11.05\00:00:13.00 Exodus. Now there is a book in the Bible is Exodus and I 00:00:13.04\00:00:19.12 understand it means exit from Egypt. 00:00:19.15\00:00:21.50 Yep. The departure. So the term can be used several different 00:00:21.54\00:00:24.55 ways but it became also used just to talk about a person 00:00:24.59\00:00:28.93 dying. Okay. Going back to 2 Peter now. 00:00:28.96\00:00:30.87 What we've read appears to say that Peter is leaving or 00:00:30.90\00:00:36.64 departing his body after death. Yeah. And many people might 00:00:36.67\00:00:41.73 use some of these verses to say that. Right. Is that right? 00:00:41.77\00:00:46.75 Well they do and there are, as I said, these two passages in the 00:00:46.79\00:00:51.90 New Testament that particularly focus or make use of the 00:00:51.93\00:00:55.59 terminology tent to refer to the body in relationship to 00:00:55.62\00:00:59.21 questions of death. The other one we want to take a look at is 00:00:59.24\00:01:02.19 in 2 Corinthians chapter 5. So let's go over there right now 00:01:02.23\00:01:06.34 so we can get a good look at that and then we'll come back 00:01:06.37\00:01:11.99 and relink it with 2 Peter. So 2 Corinthians 5. It's a little 00:01:12.03\00:01:17.34 longer passage. We want to read verses 1-10, so I'll read the 00:01:17.37\00:01:21.77 first 5 verses and then you can read verses 6-10. We're reading 00:01:21.80\00:01:26.92 2 Corinthians chapter 5 starting in verse 1. For we know that if 00:01:26.96\00:01:32.04 the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed we have a 00:01:32.08\00:01:36.61 building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the 00:01:36.64\00:01:39.81 heavens. For in this tent we groan longing to put on our 00:01:39.85\00:01:45.30 heavenly dwelling. If indeed by putting it on we may not be 00:01:45.33\00:01:50.95 found naked, for while we are still in this tent we groan 00:01:50.98\00:01:56.22 being burdened. Not that we would be unclothed but that we 00:01:56.26\00:02:01.43 would be further clothed so that what is mortal may be swallowed 00:02:01.46\00:02:05.51 up by life. He who has prepared us for this very thing is God 00:02:05.55\00:02:09.56 who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. 00:02:09.59\00:02:12.10 So we are always confident knowing that while we are at 00:02:12.14\00:02:15.94 home in the body we are absent from the Lord, for we walk by 00:02:15.98\00:02:20.91 faith not by sight. We are confident, yes, well pleased 00:02:20.94\00:02:24.93 rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the 00:02:24.96\00:02:29.56 Lord. Therefore, we make it our aim whether present or absent 00:02:29.60\00:02:33.81 to be well pleasing to him, for we must all appear before the 00:02:33.85\00:02:37.50 judgment seat of Christ that each one may receive the things 00:02:37.53\00:02:41.22 done in the body according to what he has done whether good 00:02:41.25\00:02:44.91 or bad. All right. Now this passage is 00:02:44.94\00:02:48.99 another one of those passages that people kind of scratch 00:02:49.03\00:02:53.20 their heads over and kind of worry about because many of our 00:02:53.24\00:02:57.39 friends from other denominations will talk about being absent 00:02:57.42\00:03:00.54 from the body and present with the Lord. They talk about a 00:03:00.58\00:03:03.63 person going to heaven when they die. So we have to look at this 00:03:03.67\00:03:07.32 passage quite carefully to try to understand it. The reason 00:03:07.36\00:03:11.53 we've come here is because Paul talks about this idea of a tent 00:03:11.56\00:03:15.24 as well just like Peter did. So we have this parallel between 00:03:15.28\00:03:19.14 the two apostles and one scripture can help us understand 00:03:19.17\00:03:22.96 the other. Peter talks about it almost in passing. Paul focuses 00:03:23.00\00:03:28.61 attention on it and so he unpacks the ideas more. 00:03:28.64\00:03:31.79 The first thing we notice is that he's using a number of 00:03:31.82\00:03:36.81 metaphors to talk about life and death and future life. And the 00:03:36.85\00:03:41.03 first set of metaphors that he uses are structural metaphors. 00:03:41.07\00:03:45.55 He talks about a building and a tent. We notice this in verse 1; 00:03:45.58\00:03:49.82 he says that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed 00:03:49.85\00:03:54.06 we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, 00:03:54.09\00:03:58.29 eternal in the heavens. He makes a contrast between our earthly 00:03:58.32\00:04:02.29 bodies, the bodies that we have now and the bodies that we will 00:04:02.33\00:04:06.27 have when Jesus comes back and takes us to heaven, okay. 00:04:06.30\00:04:11.48 He makes a distinction between those. Now the other place where 00:04:11.51\00:04:15.01 he talks about these ideas in much detail is in 1 Corinthians 00:04:15.04\00:04:19.27 15. So we have 2 Corinthians 5, 1 Corinthians 15 and then we 00:04:19.31\00:04:22.70 have our passage in 2 Peter 1 that we've been talking about. 00:04:22.74\00:04:26.76 Okay. It's quite clear in 1 Corinthians 15 that he talks 00:04:26.80\00:04:30.72 about the mortal and immortal bodies and the time when this 00:04:30.75\00:04:34.68 all takes place is when Christ returns at the last trumpet and 00:04:34.71\00:04:39.23 that's when we are shifted from mortal to immortal. And he 00:04:39.27\00:04:43.75 displays this same kind of idea here very nicely in 00:04:43.79\00:04:47.50 2 Corinthians 5 verse 1. He talks of our earthly tent and 00:04:47.53\00:04:51.41 he talks of a heavenly building. Now which is more permanent, 00:04:51.45\00:04:55.19 a tent or a building. A building. 00:04:55.22\00:04:56.92 A building, yes of course. 00:04:56.96\00:04:59.12 A tent can be blown down by the wind, it's movable, it doesn't 00:04:59.15\00:05:03.82 have the same kind of quality and structure and stability that 00:05:03.85\00:05:08.05 a building does. So he says that if I were to compare my mortal 00:05:08.08\00:05:12.44 body and the heavenly body that Christ has prepared for me it 00:05:12.47\00:05:16.79 would be like comparing a tent and a massive, beautiful 00:05:16.83\00:05:21.62 building. So he says, we have this in the heavens prepared 00:05:21.65\00:05:25.75 for us. Now notice, he goes on in verse 2, For in this tent we 00:05:25.79\00:05:29.72 groan, that's in our mortal bodies here, longing to put on 00:05:29.75\00:05:33.65 our heavenly dwelling. He's still talking about the 00:05:33.68\00:05:35.46 difference between a tent and a building. Now notice verses 3 00:05:35.50\00:05:39.78 and 4. These are crucial verses. He says, If indeed by putting it 00:05:39.82\00:05:45.28 on we may not be found naked... Read verse 3 in your version. 00:05:45.32\00:05:50.47 If indeed having been clothed we shall not be found naked... 00:05:50.51\00:05:55.62 So mine talks about clothing, being clothed. 00:05:55.66\00:05:59.62 Yeah, he shifts from a metaphor, this is mixed metaphors again, 00:05:59.65\00:06:04.01 he shifts from a metaphor of structures and goes to talk 00:06:04.05\00:06:08.67 about clothing. Right? But notice that he talks about a 00:06:08.71\00:06:13.05 state where he wants to put something on, that's of course 00:06:13.09\00:06:17.03 his heavenly building, but he says he doesn't want to be found 00:06:17.07\00:06:20.98 naked. Now read verse 4 for us. 00:06:21.02\00:06:24.65 For we who are in this tent groan being burdened not 00:06:24.68\00:06:28.62 because we want to be unclothed but further clothed that 00:06:28.65\00:06:32.55 mortality may be swallowed up by life. 00:06:32.58\00:06:35.47 Now here are three states; it's very important to notice three 00:06:35.51\00:06:40.22 states. We have our mortal body, we have our immortal body, you 00:06:40.25\00:06:44.90 could say our tent and we have our heavenly home, our heavenly 00:06:44.94\00:06:48.80 building, now we're talking about a new body that God gives 00:06:48.84\00:06:53.21 us at the resurrection and in between our mortal life here 00:06:53.24\00:06:56.63 and our heavenly home there's another place, there's another 00:06:56.67\00:07:00.50 state we might say. He switches metaphors; he's been talking 00:07:00.54\00:07:04.01 about being clothed and he wants to be clothed upon and in 00:07:04.05\00:07:07.45 between as being naked. So the one talks about our earthly life 00:07:07.49\00:07:10.89 the other talks about our heavenly life, the one that's in 00:07:10.92\00:07:13.99 between, the nakedness, that's being dead. Okay. That's when we 00:07:14.02\00:07:19.64 die. So when we die we take off this mortal body but we don't 00:07:19.67\00:07:24.58 have our immortal home yet. We're in a state of nakedness, 00:07:24.61\00:07:29.45 that is, we are in the grave, we are sleeping waiting for Jesus 00:07:29.48\00:07:32.79 to come which is the same thing that he teaches in 00:07:32.82\00:07:35.96 1 Thessalonians 4. It's the same thing he teaches in 00:07:35.99\00:07:39.06 1 Corinthians 15 that you have mortal and immortal bodies and 00:07:39.09\00:07:44.46 when do you get your immortal body? When Christ returns. 00:07:44.50\00:07:48.10 He says oh death is swallowed up in victory and that all 00:07:48.13\00:07:51.66 happens at the return of Christ. Okay. So when we get down to 00:07:51.69\00:07:57.76 these verses in verses 6-10 and now he shifts over to talk about 00:07:57.80\00:08:04.81 geographic concepts as to where you are, absent from the body 00:08:04.85\00:08:10.56 present with the Lord. Sometimes people confuse this and they say 00:08:10.59\00:08:16.27 oh he goes to heaven right when he dies. Well, no, he isn't 00:08:16.30\00:08:20.46 going right to heaven when he dies. If you read 1 Corinthians 00:08:20.49\00:08:24.91 15, this shift from mortal to immortal, from the tent to the 00:08:24.95\00:08:29.97 heavenly body, that occurs when Christ returns, you see. And so 00:08:30.00\00:08:34.99 we sleep in the grave, 1 Thessalonians 4, people are 00:08:35.03\00:08:38.25 asleep in Jesus, they're asleep in the grave until he calls them 00:08:38.29\00:08:42.49 back to life. So when Peter discusses these things over in 00:08:42.53\00:08:48.86 2 Peter chapter 2, we can take all this knowledge, all this 00:08:48.90\00:08:54.93 background that we have in Paul's writing and bring it over 00:08:54.96\00:09:00.48 to understand better what is the idea of the tent. It is of our 00:09:00.52\00:09:06.00 movable, mortal body that does not last forever. 00:09:06.04\00:09:13.17 And if we look at verse 14... 00:09:13.21\00:09:15.45 Yeah, go back to 2 Peter, right? 00:09:15.49\00:09:17.66 ...2 Peter and verse 14, Knowing that shortly I must put off my 00:09:17.69\00:09:22.43 tent just as our Lord Jesus Christ showed me... Okay Peter 00:09:22.46\00:09:27.91 is saying that Jesus showed him that he must put off this body 00:09:27.94\00:09:33.35 or this tent. Yeah. This mortal body was going 00:09:33.38\00:09:36.25 to pass away and he says Jesus told me about this. Now we're 00:09:36.29\00:09:41.00 going to look at that in just a moment, but he mentions his 00:09:41.03\00:09:45.68 departure in verse 15 and I will make every effort so that after 00:09:45.71\00:09:49.74 my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things. 00:09:49.77\00:09:53.76 He says, I'm not going to be around forever. 00:09:53.80\00:09:56.24 Had Jesus at one point showed him or told him about his death? 00:09:56.28\00:10:00.93 He did. In fact we have that record in the book of John 00:10:00.97\00:10:04.57 chapter 21 verses 18 and 19. So we want to turn over there. 00:10:04.61\00:10:09.27 This is a story we looked at before. In 1 Peter we noticed 00:10:09.31\00:10:14.53 that the last chapter of 1 Peter 1 Peter 5, plays into the 00:10:14.56\00:10:19.57 metaphor of the shepherd that Jesus shared with Peter when he 00:10:19.60\00:10:24.34 reinstated him to ministry, but we didn't keep reading and that 00:10:24.37\00:10:29.07 is in John chapter 21 and verses 18 and 19. 00:10:29.11\00:10:39.22 Most assuredly I say to you, now this is Jesus talking, When you 00:10:39.26\00:10:43.74 were younger you girded yourself and walked where you wished but 00:10:43.77\00:10:48.22 when you are old you will stretch out your hands and 00:10:48.25\00:10:51.57 another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish. And 00:10:51.61\00:10:57.62 verse 19. This he spoke signifying by what death he 00:10:57.65\00:11:02.29 would glorify God. And when he had spoken this he said to him 00:11:02.32\00:11:06.34 follow me. Yes now we read these verses the 00:11:06.37\00:11:08.43 other day but we didn't discuss the last part of what verses 18 00:11:08.46\00:11:13.84 and 19 meant. Jesus is foretelling Peter's death here, 00:11:13.87\00:11:18.71 the way he was going to die. He says, When you were young you 00:11:18.75\00:11:22.38 dressed yourself and you walked where you wanted but when you 00:11:22.42\00:11:26.02 are old you will stretch out your hands, he says, and 00:11:26.05\00:11:31.00 another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go. 00:11:31.03\00:11:35.29 It's there's not a lot there described but the tradition is 00:11:35.33\00:11:41.87 what happened to Peter, he went to Rome eventually and he was 00:11:41.91\00:11:47.51 put to death, he was crucified. He said to those who were going 00:11:47.54\00:11:52.45 to crucify him that he wasn't worthy, this is the tradition, 00:11:52.48\00:11:56.66 that he wasn't worthy to be crucified in the same way as 00:11:56.70\00:12:01.62 Jesus, he said, so please crucify me upside down. Put my 00:12:01.65\00:12:06.50 head down, the cross upside down so that I won't be like my Lord. 00:12:06.54\00:12:09.89 Stretching out the hands; that's exactly what they did when they 00:12:09.93\00:12:13.25 crucified somebody. So notice here that he was going to die 00:12:13.28\00:12:19.20 and John in stating this in John 21:19, This he said to show 00:12:19.23\00:12:25.63 by what kind of death he was going to glorify God. So when 00:12:25.66\00:12:31.99 Peter says in verse 14, Since I know that the putting off of my 00:12:32.02\00:12:37.08 body will be soon as the Lord Jesus made clear to me, he's 00:12:37.12\00:12:41.24 talking about that story that he heard when Jesus met him in 00:12:41.27\00:12:45.68 Galilee. It's very interesting that the words that he says at 00:12:45.71\00:12:50.25 the end of verse 19 to Peter are Follow me. He was going to 00:12:50.28\00:12:54.35 Jesus through his life and he would follow him as well in the 00:12:54.38\00:12:58.88 manner of his death. So he wants to get these people in the book 00:12:58.92\00:13:03.35 of 2 Peter, he wants to be sure that after he dies they will 00:13:03.39\00:13:07.75 have a testament, they will have a message that will help protect 00:13:07.79\00:13:11.28 them against these false teachers who are trying to lead 00:13:11.32\00:13:14.62 them astray. It's rather encouraging that the Lord showed 00:13:14.66\00:13:17.88 him what he should share with people before his death so the 00:13:17.92\00:13:21.11 church would be protected from evil doers. 00:13:21.14\00:13:24.52 Amen. Dr. Shepherd I want to thank you for joining us again 00:13:24.56\00:13:28.00 in this series of 1 and 2 Peter. We're not through, we're not 00:13:28.04\00:13:31.51 finished yet so stay tuned as we continue studying now the 00:13:31.54\00:13:34.98 book of 2 Peter with Dr. Shepherd. 00:13:35.01\00:13:38.23 He comes all the way from Andrews University. He is a 00:13:38.26\00:13:40.71 professor there. I certainly have been blessed and I ask that 00:13:40.74\00:13:44.98 you pick up the Bible, ask God for his Holy Spirit as you read 00:13:45.02\00:13:49.22 in his word. God bless till next time. 00:13:49.26\00:13:52.29
