Hello and welcome to Books of the Book. 00:00:20.88\00:00:22.61 My name is Devvy Rodriguez and I'm very pleased that you're 00:00:22.64\00:00:25.57 able to join us in this very interesting Bible study. 00:00:25.61\00:00:28.79 We're studying the books of 1 and 2 Peter but today we are 00:00:28.83\00:00:32.37 continuing on our study in the book of 2 Peter. 00:00:32.41\00:00:36.13 With us is Dr. Tom Shepherd. He is a New Testament 00:00:36.16\00:00:39.81 interpretation professor at the theological seminary at Andrews 00:00:39.84\00:00:44.44 University. Dr. Shepherd, welcome. 00:00:44.48\00:00:46.16 Thank you. Good to be with you. 00:00:46.19\00:00:47.80 We have been talking about the first 11 verses of 2 Peter now 00:00:47.84\00:00:54.45 and today we'll be talking about verses 12 and on. Can you give 00:00:54.49\00:01:01.06 us a little review of what we've discussed in our previous 00:01:01.10\00:01:04.39 program? Sure. We noticed that 2 Peter 00:01:04.42\00:01:08.79 has really kind of a different direction than 1 Peter does. 00:01:08.83\00:01:11.05 Where 1 Peter is really focused on helping people face the world 00:01:11.09\00:01:15.44 how they have internal cohesion and how they fit together and 00:01:15.47\00:01:19.43 how they are to interact with people around them, in 2 Peter 00:01:19.46\00:01:23.03 the problem that he is facing is internal. There are false 00:01:23.07\00:01:26.60 teachers who are misleading people. He begins his 00:01:26.63\00:01:31.21 presentation in 2 Peter chapter 1 with a very positive message 00:01:31.24\00:01:37.30 actually about the Divine promises and he has this ladder 00:01:37.33\00:01:40.92 of virtues, a long list of very positive character traits that 00:01:40.96\00:01:45.71 he wants to see developed within the church members because he 00:01:45.75\00:01:50.58 says these will protect them from falling away or faltering 00:01:50.61\00:01:56.51 in their faith. So when we get to verse 12 he's going to start 00:01:56.54\00:02:02.40 talking about why in the world he's actually writing this 00:02:02.44\00:02:07.44 letter. Now in any of these books there's rarely kind of a 00:02:07.48\00:02:12.23 mark, a clear cut where it doesn't have any relationship to 00:02:12.27\00:02:16.99 the past, it just goes into something completely new. 00:02:17.02\00:02:19.67 Usually there's an intertwining of ideas. So what I want to do 00:02:19.71\00:02:24.39 is actually start a little before our passage. 00:02:24.42\00:02:26.69 Our passage for this study is actually verses 12-15 of 00:02:26.72\00:02:32.48 2 Peter 1. But we're going to start back in verse 8 because 00:02:32.51\00:02:35.79 there are certain terms that he uses that kind of tie the ideas 00:02:35.83\00:02:39.60 back together again. So let's start in 2 Peter chapter 1 verse 00:02:39.63\00:02:43.37 8 and read all the way through verse 15. 00:02:43.40\00:02:47.05 For these things are yours and abound. You will be neither 00:02:47.09\00:02:51.15 barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus 00:02:51.18\00:02:55.17 Christ. For he who lacks these things is shortsighted even to 00:02:55.21\00:02:59.09 blindness and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old 00:02:59.12\00:03:03.04 sins. Therefore brethren be even more diligent to make your call 00:03:03.08\00:03:06.66 and election sure. For if you do these things you will never 00:03:06.70\00:03:11.28 stumble; for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly 00:03:11.32\00:03:15.87 into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus 00:03:15.90\00:03:19.36 Christ. And read verses 12-15 as well. 00:03:19.39\00:03:22.11 Okay. For this reason I will not be negligent to remind you 00:03:22.14\00:03:26.38 always of these things that you know and are established in the 00:03:26.41\00:03:30.15 present truth. Yes, I think it is right. As long as I am in 00:03:30.18\00:03:33.89 this tent to stir you up by reminding you knowing that 00:03:33.92\00:03:37.69 shortly I must put off my tent just as our Lord Jesus Christ 00:03:37.73\00:03:41.49 showed me. Moreover I will be careful to ensure that you 00:03:41.52\00:03:45.91 always have a reminder of these things after my decease. 00:03:45.95\00:03:50.34 Now Dr. Shepherd I notice here as we begin in verses 12 and 00:03:50.37\00:03:54.69 onward, Peter mentions the word remind three times. I underlined 00:03:54.72\00:04:00.19 it here. And he says, I will not be negligent to remind, verse 00:04:00.22\00:04:05.88 13, reminding you, verse 15 reminding you of these things. 00:04:05.92\00:04:11.54 What is he reminding them of? 00:04:11.58\00:04:14.19 A lot of remembering. Because if I'm reminding someone 00:04:14.22\00:04:19.31 it's because either they have forgotten. They know about it 00:04:19.34\00:04:22.87 but they've forgotten, or they know but I know that they have 00:04:22.90\00:04:26.11 a tendency to forget so I just don't want them to forget; I'm 00:04:26.14\00:04:29.31 just reminding you. Yes. Well, actually the way 00:04:29.35\00:04:33.11 Peter has written this, he says to them that he's sending this 00:04:33.15\00:04:38.57 letter to them because he's going to depart soon and he has 00:04:38.61\00:04:44.14 written this really in the form in the ancient world of what we 00:04:44.17\00:04:49.67 would call a testament. We speak today even of a last will 00:04:49.70\00:04:55.52 and testament. It's something that you leave where it tells 00:04:55.55\00:05:00.22 how to divide up your property and what your wishes are 00:05:00.26\00:05:04.36 concerning maybe if you have children who you would prefer 00:05:04.39\00:05:09.63 that they be raised by and things like that. The testament 00:05:09.66\00:05:15.40 in the literature of his day had two characteristics. There's 00:05:15.43\00:05:20.93 reference that they know they're about to die and then they want 00:05:20.97\00:05:26.08 to teach people to remember the teaching that they have and they 00:05:26.11\00:05:31.19 want them to observe them. So you could almost say three 00:05:31.22\00:05:34.68 things you know; that I'm going to die, and these are the 00:05:34.71\00:05:38.09 teachings that I'm reminding you about and be sure to obey them 00:05:38.13\00:05:42.37 or keep them, right? This is exactly what happens here in 00:05:42.41\00:05:46.52 Peter is that you mentioned one of the characteristics about 00:05:46.55\00:05:51.11 it being reminding, reminding, reminding. And so he reminds 00:05:51.15\00:05:55.37 them of the things that he has already taught them. They have 00:05:55.40\00:05:58.85 been taught as Christians and he doesn't want them to slip away 00:05:58.89\00:06:03.06 from that. This will become also an important characteristic in 00:06:03.10\00:06:07.23 chapter three as he will face off with the false teachers 00:06:07.27\00:06:11.96 and the things he talks about them deliberately forgetting. 00:06:12.00\00:06:16.87 That's interesting because one of the commandments says 00:06:16.90\00:06:21.46 remember and I always wondered why would God begin a 00:06:21.50\00:06:25.98 commandment with remember the Sabbath day, perhaps knowing 00:06:26.02\00:06:29.10 that we might forget about it. 00:06:29.13\00:06:30.50 Might forget and that we should observe it and keep it fresh in 00:06:30.53\00:06:34.19 our minds. Now one of the things there's a phraseology there 00:06:34.23\00:06:38.74 of present truth. One of the important issues to remember 00:06:38.78\00:06:44.83 about truth is that truth is not simply a set of teachings or 00:06:44.87\00:06:49.47 doctrines that you put on a page or that you memorize with your 00:06:49.50\00:06:54.46 mind. In Peter's discussion of the truths he says they have to 00:06:54.50\00:06:58.23 become part of your life, not just in your head but in your 00:06:58.27\00:07:01.79 heart. They have to be expressed in your hands, you're saying 00:07:01.82\00:07:05.74 your actions. They have to be part of your character. Too many 00:07:05.77\00:07:10.51 times we think of doctrines simply as something we believe 00:07:10.55\00:07:15.22 and then they kind of don't have this deep rooted linkage to our 00:07:15.26\00:07:21.78 everyday life. And Peter reminds us that, yes, they are 00:07:21.81\00:07:25.47 to be an important part of our everyday life. It is not to say 00:07:25.50\00:07:29.49 that he is dismissing the idea of the importance of teachings. 00:07:29.53\00:07:33.48 He's going to emphasize in chapter three some very clear 00:07:33.52\00:07:38.29 principles and concepts. You cannot have, how should I say, 00:07:38.33\00:07:44.17 a true experience that simply has the ideas and not the 00:07:44.21\00:07:49.89 practice or on the other hand simply the practice and no 00:07:49.93\00:07:55.32 ideas. Truth has content and God's truth is ever developing. 00:07:55.36\00:07:59.65 He's showing us more things and as he does that he expects our 00:07:59.69\00:08:04.81 characters to grow and to move forward and become more like 00:08:04.84\00:08:09.93 Jesus. Okay. If we read here, Peter 00:08:09.96\00:08:14.67 talks about his or this tent. He says, I think it is right as 00:08:14.71\00:08:19.14 long as I am in this tent to stir you up by reminding you 00:08:19.18\00:08:23.54 and he also says, I must put off my tent. Now when I read this 00:08:23.58\00:08:28.74 I'm thinking okay is that a tent? You know the first thing 00:08:28.78\00:08:33.72 that comes to my mind is a tent we use when we go camping. 00:08:33.75\00:08:38.22 Yeah. So he's writing to these people and after he finishes 00:08:38.26\00:08:42.55 his letter he must put away his tent and move on. What is he 00:08:42.58\00:08:46.84 talking about here? Okay. Peter uses some 00:08:46.87\00:08:50.62 specialized terms that we need to unpack as we look at this. 00:08:50.66\00:08:56.54 Let's just read verses 13 and 14 again. And remember this is 00:08:56.58\00:09:01.03 the testament so he's going to be talking about his death so 00:09:01.06\00:09:04.75 we'll kind of keep that in mind. Let's read verses 13 and 14 one 00:09:04.78\00:09:08.43 more time. Yes, I think it is right as long 00:09:08.47\00:09:10.88 as I am in this tent to stir you up by reminding you knowing that 00:09:10.91\00:09:15.52 shortly I must put off my tent just as our Lord Jesus Christ 00:09:15.55\00:09:19.86 showed me. Moreover, I will be careful to ensure you always 00:09:19.90\00:09:24.18 have a reminder of these things after my decease. 00:09:24.21\00:09:27.89 Okay. Now I have the English Standard Version. You are using 00:09:27.92\00:09:31.69 the New King James Version. In the English Standard Version it 00:09:31.73\00:09:34.87 translates it a little bit differently. Actually yours is a 00:09:34.90\00:09:38.00 more literal translation. So this one's a little more 00:09:38.04\00:09:41.38 interpretive in verse 13. It says, I think it is right as 00:09:41.41\00:09:45.66 long as I am in this body to stir you up by way of reminders 00:09:45.69\00:09:49.78 since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon as 00:09:49.81\00:09:53.59 our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. Now they have a little 00:09:53.63\00:09:59.38 note down below that helps to explain this. They say that the 00:09:59.42\00:10:06.99 term here for body is the word for tent. The Greek word is tent 00:10:07.02\00:10:14.56 just like yours puts it. But when people hear that 00:10:14.59\00:10:18.30 terminology they say tent; is he going camping and he's about to 00:10:18.33\00:10:22.63 leave and he's been camping out where they are. No. This is a 00:10:22.66\00:10:26.93 term that was used as a metaphoric way of speaking of 00:10:26.96\00:10:30.74 the body, but this term is used to refer to a dwelling or a 00:10:30.77\00:10:36.11 lodging or to the body itself, but it is literally the word 00:10:36.14\00:10:40.77 tent and there are two main places in the New Testament 00:10:40.80\00:10:45.36 that talk about this terminology It's here in 2 Peter chapter 1 00:10:45.39\00:10:50.38 verses 13 and 14 but also over in the book of 2 Corinthians 5 00:10:50.42\00:10:54.71 where we will go in a minute because we want to understand 00:10:54.74\00:10:58.81 what Peter is talking about. But before we go there, there's 00:10:58.84\00:11:03.07 one more term that he uses and that's the term departure. 00:11:03.11\00:11:07.30 I think yours uses the phrase decease in verse 15. 00:11:07.33\00:11:10.43 Yes, after my decease. 00:11:10.47\00:11:12.91 Yeah. So mine in verse 15 says, I will make every effort so that 00:11:12.94\00:11:17.73 after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these 00:11:17.76\00:11:24.28 things. It's interesting; the word in Greek is exodus and it 00:11:24.31\00:11:29.89 means a going out or a departure The term is used over in the 00:11:29.92\00:11:35.06 book of Luke chapter 9 verse 31. Maybe we should just go there 00:11:35.09\00:11:39.68 very quickly, Luke 9 verse 31, because it's the other use of 00:11:39.71\00:11:44.98 this term in the New Testament and just see how Luke makes use 00:11:45.02\00:11:50.25 of the term. This is at the story of the transfiguration, 00:11:50.29\00:11:54.51 which interestingly enough Peter is going to talk about shortly 00:11:54.55\00:11:58.18 in 2 Peter chapter 1. So here we have a parallel story and 00:11:58.21\00:12:03.89 the use of the same phrase. This is Luke 9 and Moses and 00:12:03.92\00:12:09.53 Elijah have come... Why don't you read verse 30 and verse 31. 00:12:09.56\00:12:13.69 And behold two men talked with him who were Moses and Elijah 00:12:13.72\00:12:17.84 who appeared in glory and spoke of his decease which he was 00:12:17.88\00:12:21.96 about to accomplish at Jerusalem 00:12:22.00\00:12:24.65 Yeah, it's the same term. 00:12:24.69\00:12:26.52 Decease is the same term meaning Exodus and he's talking about 00:12:26.55\00:12:30.50 his death. His death, yeah. He's going to.. 00:12:30.54\00:12:34.45 And here they say, Behold two men were talking with him, Moses 00:12:34.49\00:12:37.32 and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure 00:12:37.36\00:12:41.48 which he was about to accomplish in Jerusalem, and the term is 00:12:41.51\00:12:45.59 exodus. So the decease when Jesus was going to die on the 00:12:45.63\00:12:50.28 cross, that's what they were talking with him about. 00:12:50.32\00:12:53.97 The term exodus was used metaphorically just to refer to 00:12:54.01\00:12:57.60 a death. Most people don't like to say the term death. You know 00:12:57.63\00:13:03.18 they'll say well he passed away or he went to his final rest or 00:13:03.21\00:13:07.46 something like that. So they had different metaphors that they 00:13:07.49\00:13:11.54 would use in this ancient world and this was one of them when 00:13:11.58\00:13:15.73 you would talk about their exodus, their departure, their 00:13:15.77\00:13:19.89 decease which is a fine way to translate it. 00:13:19.92\00:13:22.09 Well Dr. Shepherd I want to keep hearing more about this exodus 00:13:22.13\00:13:26.11 or this departure after we return after a short break. 00:13:26.15\00:13:31.63
