And we're back to "Books of the Book" 00:00:01.40\00:00:02.77 with Dr. Tom Shepherd. 00:00:02.80\00:00:04.62 Dr. Shepherd, we were going to read a Psalms, is that right? 00:00:04.65\00:00:07.35 Yeah, we were going to read Psalm 00:00:07.38\00:00:08.75 part we'll read-- we'll read part of the Psalm. 00:00:08.78\00:00:10.36 It Psalm 22 and this is a messianic psalm. 00:00:10.39\00:00:14.77 You will notice when we read it, 00:00:14.80\00:00:16.37 it'll immediately become clear that Jesus 00:00:16.40\00:00:20.38 quotes from this Psalm, when He is on the cross. 00:00:20.41\00:00:23.08 So it's clearly this messianic sense. 00:00:23.11\00:00:26.41 I want you to notice as we read through it, 00:00:26.44\00:00:28.10 how it goes down to depths and it comes back up and then 00:00:28.13\00:00:32.32 goes down into the depths and comes back up, right? 00:00:32.35\00:00:36.05 It starts this way, "My God, my God, 00:00:36.08\00:00:39.64 why have You forsaken me? 00:00:39.67\00:00:42.10 Why are you so far from saving me 00:00:42.13\00:00:45.00 from the words of my groaning. 00:00:45.03\00:00:46.83 O my God, I cry by day, but You do not answer, 00:00:46.86\00:00:50.22 and by night, but I find no rest. 00:00:50.25\00:00:54.21 Yet You are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. 00:00:54.24\00:00:58.62 In You our fathers trusted. 00:00:58.65\00:01:00.29 They trusted and You delivered them. 00:01:00.32\00:01:02.80 To You they cried and were rescued. 00:01:02.83\00:01:05.15 In You they trusted and were not put to shame. 00:01:05.18\00:01:09.09 But I am a worm and not a man, 00:01:09.12\00:01:11.92 scorned by mankind and despised by the people. 00:01:11.95\00:01:15.56 All who see me mock me. 00:01:15.59\00:01:18.01 They make mouths at me, they wag their heads. 00:01:18.04\00:01:20.56 He trusted in the Lord, let Him deliver him. 00:01:20.59\00:01:23.17 Let Him rescue him, because He delights in him. 00:01:23.20\00:01:27.28 Yet You are He who took me forth from the womb. 00:01:27.31\00:01:30.83 You made me trust You at my mother's breasts. 00:01:30.86\00:01:34.47 On You was I cast from my birth. 00:01:34.50\00:01:37.46 And from my mother's womb You have been my God. 00:01:37.49\00:01:41.18 Be not far from me, for trouble is near. 00:01:41.21\00:01:44.22 And there is none to help." 00:01:44.25\00:01:47.44 "Many bulls have surrounded me. 00:01:47.47\00:01:49.16 Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled me. 00:01:49.19\00:01:52.28 They gape at me with their mouths 00:01:52.31\00:01:54.58 like a raging and roaring lion. 00:01:54.61\00:01:56.79 I am poured out like water, 00:01:56.82\00:01:58.47 and all my bones are out of joint. 00:01:58.50\00:02:00.84 My heart is like wax. It is melted within me. 00:02:00.87\00:02:04.61 My strength is dried up like a potsherd, 00:02:04.64\00:02:07.65 and my tongue cleaves to my jaws. 00:02:07.68\00:02:10.40 You have brought me to the dust of death. 00:02:10.43\00:02:12.83 For dogs have surrounded me, 00:02:12.86\00:02:14.84 the congregation of the wicked has enclosed me. 00:02:14.87\00:02:17.47 They pierced my hands and my feet. 00:02:17.50\00:02:20.14 I can count all my bones. They look and stare at me. 00:02:20.17\00:02:24.43 They divide my garments among them 00:02:24.46\00:02:26.89 and for my clothing they cast lots. 00:02:26.92\00:02:29.53 But You, O Lord, do not be far off. 00:02:29.56\00:02:31.84 O my strength, hasten to my help me. 00:02:31.87\00:02:34.24 Deliver me from the sword. 00:02:34.27\00:02:36.01 My precious life from the power of the dog. 00:02:36.04\00:02:38.91 Save me from the lion's mouth. 00:02:38.94\00:02:41.13 And from the horns of the wild oxen." 00:02:41.16\00:02:44.37 Okay, so it's very clear. 00:02:44.40\00:02:47.37 You get this pattern of almost like 00:02:47.40\00:02:51.49 total despair and then a remembrance, 00:02:51.52\00:02:55.54 no, but God is the deliverer. God will come to my aid. 00:02:55.57\00:02:59.36 Totally left alone, no, but God will rescue me. 00:02:59.39\00:03:04.16 And it's very interesting that the words of Jesus on a cross 00:03:04.19\00:03:08.84 quote from the psalm that's verse one. 00:03:08.87\00:03:10.72 He quotes from that. 00:03:10.75\00:03:12.12 So even His words of anguish are a prayer 00:03:12.15\00:03:16.03 as He, you know, looks to God for help. 00:03:16.06\00:03:19.52 And you get this back and forth so it has two poles. 00:03:19.55\00:03:24.40 The pole of despair and the pole of hope, all right? 00:03:24.43\00:03:27.87 And here back in, this was your question 00:03:27.90\00:03:30.76 that you had asked about what Peter does? 00:03:30.79\00:03:34.57 And you just want to repeat 00:03:34.60\00:03:36.58 that question again so that we are clear. 00:03:36.61\00:03:37.98 So what I noticed in the Psalms we just read 00:03:38.01\00:03:40.41 and mentioned a lion twice. Yeah. 00:03:40.44\00:03:43.09 As an enemy and I don't think I could have come up 00:03:43.12\00:03:45.26 with a better illustration than the one Peter did 00:03:45.29\00:03:48.14 as the devil being like a lion roaring around 00:03:48.17\00:03:52.75 and so what has Peter recommended in response to that? 00:03:52.78\00:03:57.41 Well, if I were out in the open field with a lion, 00:03:57.44\00:04:01.98 I would run as fast as I could. 00:04:02.01\00:04:08.71 Hopefully, I'll have a jeep nearby 00:04:08.74\00:04:10.11 and I get inside my jeep-- That's right. 00:04:10.14\00:04:11.71 Put the windows close. 00:04:11.74\00:04:13.77 But that's not what Peter says to do. 00:04:13.80\00:04:15.38 It's really kind of surprising. He says to withstand him. 00:04:15.41\00:04:19.77 You think of David, you know, he was a brave young man 00:04:19.80\00:04:22.71 and then he said, when there was a lion and took the lamb. 00:04:22.74\00:04:24.46 He says I went, grabbed it and killed it, 00:04:24.49\00:04:26.68 you know, if it was a bear, 00:04:26.71\00:04:28.08 I would hit it with my club or whatever. 00:04:28.11\00:04:32.24 Peter talks here about other Christians. 00:04:32.27\00:04:36.13 He's been talking to the group of Christians 00:04:36.16\00:04:37.76 he's been writing to all through this time. 00:04:37.79\00:04:40.01 And now he refers to other Christians around them. 00:04:40.04\00:04:44.16 He says there's this brotherhood through out the world 00:04:44.19\00:04:47.41 that's going through similar sufferings. 00:04:47.44\00:04:49.66 It's not misery loves company. That's not the idea. 00:04:49.69\00:04:54.02 It's rather the great crowd of faithful witnesses 00:04:54.05\00:04:57.19 that these people are encouraged to stand 00:04:57.22\00:05:00.07 shoulder to shoulder with to be firm and strong. 00:05:00.10\00:05:03.35 It's not just the brotherhood we are to take as our example, 00:05:03.38\00:05:06.60 but Peter indicates that in verse 10, 00:05:06.63\00:05:09.36 God is the one, who will see us through. 00:05:09.39\00:05:12.05 So in that contrast of despair and hope in Psalm 22, 00:05:12.08\00:05:16.11 now we come to the contrast between the devil and God. 00:05:16.14\00:05:22.43 And so my question is what is God's role in this? 00:05:22.46\00:05:28.48 God's role is very beautiful in this passage, okay. 00:05:28.51\00:05:31.58 Peter reminds us of who God is? 00:05:31.61\00:05:33.95 He is the God of all grace. 00:05:33.98\00:05:36.41 He is the God who called us to His eternal glory in Christ. 00:05:36.44\00:05:40.76 He set before us then is a-- 00:05:40.79\00:05:44.82 His resolution of our past by His grace. 00:05:44.85\00:05:48.00 That's where he started the letter. 00:05:48.03\00:05:49.54 This is kind of like the closing 00:05:49.57\00:05:51.62 book end on the letter, you know. 00:05:51.65\00:05:53.27 He started by talking about what God did for our past. 00:05:53.30\00:05:56.38 How that He has secured our future? 00:05:56.41\00:05:58.89 And so we can face the present. 00:05:58.92\00:06:01.26 So even here His resolution of our past by His grace, 00:06:01.29\00:06:07.56 the experience of eternal salvation that is going to come 00:06:07.59\00:06:10.49 at the return of Christ helps us now 00:06:10.52\00:06:12.68 in our present experience of facing the devil. 00:06:12.71\00:06:15.98 So understanding who God is 00:06:16.01\00:06:18.65 and what He has done for us 00:06:18.68\00:06:20.85 and what He is calling us to? 00:06:20.88\00:06:22.81 Does not deny our present experience of suffering, 00:06:22.84\00:06:26.86 but it does modify our view of that sufferings magnitude. 00:06:26.89\00:06:30.45 Peter says it's for a little while. 00:06:30.48\00:06:33.90 And then he uses four beautiful verbs to describe, 00:06:33.93\00:06:40.21 what God is going to do and how He's going to carry things out. 00:06:40.24\00:06:43.84 And these verbs are found in verse 10, 00:06:43.87\00:06:49.92 if you would read verse 10? 00:06:49.95\00:06:51.79 "But may the God of all grace, 00:06:51.82\00:06:53.49 who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, 00:06:53.52\00:06:56.81 after you have suffered a while, 00:06:56.84\00:06:58.70 perfect, establish, 00:06:58.73\00:07:00.36 strengthen, and settle you." 00:07:00.39\00:07:03.16 All right, now we got to kind of slow down 00:07:03.19\00:07:05.65 on those verbs and, you know, 00:07:05.68\00:07:07.27 open them up a little bit, okay. 00:07:07.30\00:07:09.24 The first one is the Greek verb is katharizo 00:07:09.27\00:07:12.64 and it means to put in order or to restore, 00:07:12.67\00:07:17.13 okay, so and to make compete. 00:07:17.16\00:07:19.95 This verb was used to refer to mending nets. 00:07:19.98\00:07:24.92 When they had been torn or to set-in a dislocated limb, 00:07:24.95\00:07:30.19 if your limb got out of joint and the doctor would take 00:07:30.22\00:07:32.59 and get it back into joint, okay? 00:07:32.62\00:07:35.56 So we can say that God is going to restore things. 00:07:35.59\00:07:38.86 He is going to put things back in order. 00:07:38.89\00:07:42.20 Remember, He is the moral orator of the world. 00:07:42.23\00:07:44.93 So all the things in our lives that have been put out of place. 00:07:44.96\00:07:48.65 All of the things where people have done us wrong, 00:07:48.68\00:07:51.82 its never been set right, where we've suffered 00:07:51.85\00:07:54.78 and gone through trials because of our Christian faith. 00:07:54.81\00:07:58.05 He is going to settle all those things. 00:07:58.08\00:07:59.99 He is going to set it right. 00:08:00.02\00:08:01.48 The next verb is sterizo, it means to setup 00:08:01.51\00:08:07.22 or to establish, to fix firmly. 00:08:07.25\00:08:12.85 It's used to refer to setting something firmly down 00:08:12.88\00:08:15.49 like taking a stone and setting it firmly in the ground. 00:08:15.52\00:08:18.76 You have a big stone and you make a hole for it. 00:08:18.79\00:08:20.66 You set it there, so it's not going to move. 00:08:20.69\00:08:24.59 It also means to support, to collaborate, 00:08:24.62\00:08:28.35 to establish and ground something. 00:08:28.38\00:08:31.16 Then the third verb that he uses. 00:08:31.19\00:08:33.04 Nice that he uses four verbs together, 00:08:33.07\00:08:35.08 you know. It's a tough one. 00:08:35.11\00:08:39.13 Sthenao, sthenao and it means to strengthen, 00:08:39.16\00:08:43.19 okay and it's related to a noun 00:08:43.22\00:08:45.66 and that means strength or might, 00:08:45.69\00:08:47.64 especially of bodily strength like bodybuilding. 00:08:47.67\00:08:50.30 You see, you can go to the YMCA and you lift your weights. 00:08:50.33\00:08:53.56 And the last verb is themalio which means to, 00:08:53.59\00:08:59.18 to found or to lay a foundation, to establish. 00:08:59.21\00:09:03.33 So if we think of all of these four verbs together, 00:09:03.36\00:09:08.10 you know these great ideas. 00:09:08.13\00:09:10.21 We kind of get a pattern that goes like this. 00:09:10.24\00:09:13.55 God is going mend the broken nets of your life. 00:09:13.58\00:09:19.41 He is going to set the dislocated limbs 00:09:19.44\00:09:23.12 that had been pulled out of place, 00:09:23.15\00:09:25.00 by our life's trials and troubles. 00:09:25.03\00:09:28.42 He is going to set the stone of your life in a settled place. 00:09:28.45\00:09:34.13 It's been moved from here to there 00:09:34.16\00:09:36.03 by all kinds of trials and troubles. 00:09:36.06\00:09:38.17 He is going to set it in place in a firm place. 00:09:38.20\00:09:41.48 He is gonna build up your body. 00:09:41.51\00:09:43.31 He is gonna take you to the YMCA and make you 00:09:43.34\00:09:46.29 one of those body building people with the big muscles. 00:09:46.32\00:09:49.98 I go to the YMCA to lift weights. 00:09:50.01\00:09:51.95 And one time I saw a guy wearing a shirt, 00:09:51.98\00:09:54.33 one of these guys with the great big muscles, you know. 00:09:54.36\00:09:56.91 And he had something written on the back of his shirt, 00:09:56.94\00:09:59.84 so I was kind of looking at it 00:09:59.87\00:10:01.24 and I looked at, little more closely 00:10:01.27\00:10:02.64 and this quote on the back of his shirt said 00:10:02.67\00:10:07.58 "pain is weakness leaving the body." 00:10:07.61\00:10:14.01 Pain is weakness leaving the body. 00:10:14.04\00:10:16.11 So God is taking you to the YMCA and He is gonna build you up. 00:10:16.14\00:10:19.83 He is gonna give you strong muscles again. 00:10:19.86\00:10:22.11 And He is gonna lay the foundations 00:10:22.14\00:10:23.75 of a new building for you and make your life secure. 00:10:23.78\00:10:26.86 I mean, God will put it in order, 00:10:26.89\00:10:30.13 He will establish you, He will strengthen you, 00:10:30.16\00:10:32.80 He will lay the foundations of your life. 00:10:32.83\00:10:34.69 I mean, you can hardly think of a better way for Him 00:10:34.72\00:10:37.60 to bring things to a conclusion. 00:10:37.63\00:10:40.17 Okay, so what role does verse 11 play then? 00:10:40.20\00:10:44.47 But when you see, what God has done, 00:10:44.50\00:10:45.87 let's read verse 11 it says. Sure. 00:10:45.90\00:10:47.40 "To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen". 00:10:47.43\00:10:50.46 It's a praise, he turns back to praise to God, 00:10:50.49\00:10:53.00 just like he began, you know. 00:10:53.03\00:10:54.67 Blessed be God who has given us this new birth. 00:10:54.70\00:10:56.90 So when you see what God has done 00:10:56.93\00:10:59.01 just like Peter began the book with blessings 00:10:59.04\00:11:01.51 so here he ends the book with this wonderful doxology 00:11:01.54\00:11:04.97 "To him be power forever. Amen". 00:11:05.00\00:11:08.04 Okay, and we are just about to close this letter, 00:11:08.07\00:11:11.29 how does Peter finish off his letter? 00:11:11.32\00:11:14.46 Oh, in verses 12 to 14, 00:11:14.49\00:11:17.88 Peter describes a helper, who is working with him. 00:11:17.91\00:11:22.85 And then he gives a greeting to the church in Rome. 00:11:22.88\00:11:25.45 And he has a final reminder about love within the community. 00:11:25.48\00:11:28.85 The name of the helper was Silvanus 00:11:28.88\00:11:32.23 and this turns out to be Silas. 00:11:32.26\00:11:36.51 In the book of Acts Chapter 15 00:11:36.54\00:11:38.93 and over in 2 Corinthians Chapter 1 00:11:38.96\00:11:41.38 and 1 Thessalonians 1 and 2 Thessalonians 1, 00:11:41.41\00:11:44.00 this guy got around, he was a traveling companion of Paul. 00:11:44.03\00:11:48.23 And evidently, he ends up Peter is in Rome. 00:11:48.26\00:11:52.13 He calls the place Babylon where he is so, 00:11:52.16\00:11:54.99 you know, it's that linkage to Rome. 00:11:55.02\00:11:57.07 And Paul ends up there as well, but Silas does too. 00:11:57.10\00:12:02.00 And so, Silas helps Peter in some way with this letter. 00:12:02.03\00:12:06.22 Now some people think that this means 00:12:06.25\00:12:08.12 that he helped to write the letter. 00:12:08.15\00:12:11.10 But actually the terminology that is used here, 00:12:11.13\00:12:13.33 the Greek terminology through whom I wrote, 00:12:13.36\00:12:16.83 doesn't actually mean the person who wrote the letter. 00:12:16.86\00:12:20.93 What we would call an amanuensis, 00:12:20.96\00:12:22.54 the person taking the words down, 00:12:22.57\00:12:25.18 rather this is referring to the person, 00:12:25.21\00:12:26.88 who would carry the letter. 00:12:26.91\00:12:28.88 So Silvanus is not in jail or stopped 00:12:28.91\00:12:32.09 from moving in place and he can go. 00:12:32.12\00:12:34.10 So he takes the letter for Peter after these people. 00:12:34.13\00:12:38.98 But Peter can't resist just one more expression 00:12:39.01\00:12:41.85 summarizing what the letter is about. 00:12:41.88\00:12:43.47 He says this is the true grace of God 00:12:43.50\00:12:46.79 in which you must stand. 00:12:46.82\00:12:49.13 God's action is summarized by reference to His grace 00:12:49.16\00:12:51.89 and this epitomizes all that He has done for us in Christ. 00:12:51.92\00:12:56.85 Then Peter summarizes what our response must be. 00:12:56.88\00:12:59.82 He says stand in this truth and he affirms its validity 00:12:59.85\00:13:05.02 by calling it the true grace of God. 00:13:05.05\00:13:06.91 Peter then does greetings from the church in Babylon, 00:13:06.94\00:13:10.98 the fellow sister church and he refers to his son Mark, 00:13:11.01\00:13:15.73 who is also becomes the writer of the gospel of Mark. 00:13:15.76\00:13:19.39 And finally his last phrase is 00:13:19.42\00:13:21.90 "Peace to all of you who are in Christ." 00:13:21.93\00:13:26.49 It's such a wonderful book 1 Peter. 00:13:26.52\00:13:29.61 I just love its wonderful power 00:13:29.64\00:13:31.57 and its wonderful theology in the mixing of ideas. 00:13:31.60\00:13:35.41 But now we've come to a conclusion 00:13:35.44\00:13:37.43 of looking at this book. 00:13:37.46\00:13:38.84 And so next time, we will look at 2 Peter. 00:13:38.87\00:13:41.04 And I'm looking forward to our next study. 00:13:41.07\00:13:43.83 And I hope you, too, have been blessed by these studies 00:13:43.86\00:13:45.96 with Dr. Tom Shepherd as I have. 00:13:45.99\00:13:48.68 Well, we hope to see you next time 00:13:48.71\00:13:50.23 in this series of "Books of the Book". 00:13:50.26\00:13:52.89 We are studying now the next series 00:13:52.92\00:13:55.04 on our next program "The Second Book of Peter". 00:13:55.07\00:13:58.33 Till next time, we hope that you have been blessed. 00:13:58.36\00:14:00.87 And don't forget. Pick up the Bible. 00:14:00.90\00:14:02.89 Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you 00:14:02.92\00:14:04.29 as God speaks to you. God bless. 00:14:04.32\00:14:06.90
