Hello, friends and welcome to "Books of the Book." 00:00:21.36\00:00:23.77 My name is Deyvy Rodriguez and I'm very pleased 00:00:23.80\00:00:25.63 that you are able to join us in this Bible study. 00:00:25.66\00:00:28.49 We are studying the Books of 1st 00:00:28.52\00:00:29.98 and 2nd Peter with Dr. Tom Shepherd. 00:00:30.01\00:00:32.89 He comes from Andrews University, 00:00:32.92\00:00:34.40 and he is a professor at the Theological Seminary there. 00:00:34.43\00:00:39.33 And that today we are studying the last, 00:00:39.36\00:00:41.23 very last verses of Chapter 5 in 1 Peter. 00:00:41.26\00:00:45.02 Dr. Shepherd, how are you doing? 00:00:45.05\00:00:47.06 Good. How are you? 00:00:47.09\00:00:48.46 Doing good. Welcome back. 00:00:48.49\00:00:49.86 And today we will be talking about or discussing 00:00:49.89\00:00:51.73 the last few verses of Chapter 5. Yes. 00:00:51.76\00:00:55.81 Now how did this verse or these verses link up 00:00:55.84\00:00:59.50 with what Peter talked about the beginning of Chapter 5? 00:00:59.53\00:01:02.84 Okay, so we last time looked at Chapter 5:1-4 00:01:02.87\00:01:06.97 and now we are looking at Chapter 5:5-14. 00:01:07.00\00:01:10.26 And Peter in this section first talks to young people. 00:01:10.29\00:01:15.96 He had talked to the elders at the beginning 00:01:15.99\00:01:18.45 and now he turns to talk to the young people. 00:01:18.48\00:01:20.59 So that's the kind of a natural pair that go together, 00:01:20.62\00:01:23.88 the elders and young people. 00:01:23.91\00:01:26.07 So he talks with the elders in verses 1 to 4. 00:01:26.10\00:01:28.80 And then the young people in this passage. 00:01:28.83\00:01:31.34 But then he widens the idea, the concept out and speaks 00:01:31.37\00:01:36.05 to all Christians calling for humility before God. 00:01:36.08\00:01:39.82 And he is going to lay out just how gracious and caring God is 00:01:39.85\00:01:44.02 and how His great power can overcome the devil. 00:01:44.05\00:01:46.72 So we should read the passage verses 1 Peter 5:5-14. 00:01:46.75\00:01:52.61 Okay, "Likewise you younger people, 00:01:52.64\00:01:55.55 submit yourselves to your elders. 00:01:55.58\00:01:57.94 Yes, all of you be submissive to one another 00:01:57.97\00:02:00.56 and be clothed with humility. 00:02:00.59\00:02:02.85 For God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. 00:02:02.88\00:02:07.03 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, 00:02:07.06\00:02:10.47 that He may exalt you in due time, 00:02:10.50\00:02:12.92 casting all your care upon Him, 00:02:12.95\00:02:14.83 for He cares for you. Be sober. 00:02:14.86\00:02:17.40 Be vigilant because your adversary the devil 00:02:17.43\00:02:21.41 walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 00:02:21.44\00:02:25.79 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, 00:02:25.82\00:02:28.26 knowing that the same sufferings are experienced 00:02:28.29\00:02:31.18 by your brotherhood in the world. 00:02:31.21\00:02:33.81 But may the God of all grace, 00:02:33.84\00:02:35.35 who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, 00:02:35.38\00:02:39.11 after you have suffered for a while perfect, 00:02:39.14\00:02:42.32 establish, strengthen, and settle you. 00:02:42.35\00:02:45.25 To Him be the glory and the dominion 00:02:45.28\00:02:47.41 forever and ever. Amen. 00:02:47.44\00:02:49.78 By Silvanus, our faithful brother as I consider him, 00:02:49.81\00:02:53.57 I have written to you briefly, exhorting and testifying 00:02:53.60\00:02:56.93 that this is the true grace of God in which you stand. 00:02:56.96\00:03:01.20 She who is in Babylon, elect together with you, 00:03:01.23\00:03:04.56 greets you and so does Mark, my son. 00:03:04.59\00:03:07.57 Greet one another with a kiss of love. 00:03:07.60\00:03:10.00 Peace to you all who are in Christ Jesus. Amen." 00:03:10.03\00:03:14.18 All right, So we start off 00:03:14.21\00:03:15.92 by looking at the young people in verse 4. 00:03:15.95\00:03:19.24 And in the pattern he has established 00:03:19.27\00:03:22.98 of the Christian relationship to those around him. 00:03:23.01\00:03:26.25 He tells the young people to submit to the elders. 00:03:26.28\00:03:29.19 We remember how he told the slaves 00:03:29.22\00:03:31.14 or the household servants to submit to the masters. 00:03:31.17\00:03:33.90 He tells wives to submit to their husbands. 00:03:33.93\00:03:36.83 He tells all the community to submit 00:03:36.86\00:03:38.91 to the governing authorities. 00:03:38.94\00:03:40.64 So it's not surprising here that he tells to young people 00:03:40.67\00:03:43.04 that they're supposed to submit to the elders. 00:03:43.07\00:03:45.43 There's some question that is raised. 00:03:45.46\00:03:48.24 Just who these young people were or who are the "young." 00:03:48.27\00:03:52.49 Some people want to say, well, these must be people 00:03:52.52\00:03:54.81 who are new, you know, new in the faith, 00:03:54.84\00:03:57.90 neophytes, new believers. 00:03:57.93\00:04:00.49 And that's a possibility, but that he has just 00:04:00.52\00:04:04.33 talked to the elders and they probably 00:04:04.36\00:04:07.62 were older men in the community. 00:04:07.65\00:04:10.62 It was a male dominant society at that time. 00:04:10.65\00:04:13.13 And so the elders would be these older men. 00:04:13.16\00:04:16.67 The natural pattern probably is that these are young people 00:04:16.70\00:04:20.86 who are told that they are supposed 00:04:20.89\00:04:24.14 to listen to what the elders say. 00:04:24.17\00:04:27.59 Now it's really interesting because the passage 00:04:27.62\00:04:33.57 we just studied before in verses 1-4. 00:04:33.60\00:04:36.37 That told us about the elders and what their role was to be. 00:04:36.40\00:04:40.58 How would you summarize that? 00:04:40.61\00:04:42.44 What we said about them? 00:04:42.47\00:04:43.84 Would you, what were those? 00:04:43.87\00:04:45.32 Remember those three antitheses that we had. 00:04:45.35\00:04:47.50 And they weren't supposed to do it for the gain 00:04:47.53\00:04:50.02 that they were supposed to get. They were supposed to do-- 00:04:50.05\00:04:51.95 not pushed into it but willingly. 00:04:51.98\00:04:53.35 Not to be masters, but to the examples to the flock. 00:04:53.38\00:04:57.06 What kind of idea, kind of summarizes all that? 00:04:57.09\00:05:00.22 Do you have any words that might come into your mind? 00:05:00.25\00:05:02.69 Well, in summary, I'd say that the elders 00:05:02.72\00:05:05.62 must be sincere in their work, in their-- 00:05:05.65\00:05:09.02 as we read willingly without any personal gain. 00:05:09.05\00:05:13.55 But as Jesus said that that the shepherd 00:05:13.58\00:05:17.82 should not wait to be paid or the one that is interested 00:05:17.85\00:05:22.51 in being paid will somehow 00:05:22.54\00:05:25.16 sometime will scatter when the wolf comes around. 00:05:25.19\00:05:28.92 Yes, all right. 00:05:28.95\00:05:30.32 And so they are supposed to have their focused on the flock. 00:05:30.35\00:05:34.40 Care and concern for the flock, 00:05:34.43\00:05:36.22 a deep concern from what we remember. 00:05:36.25\00:05:37.97 Peter's particular experience that he had with Jesus 00:05:38.00\00:05:40.83 that got him thinking along these lines of shepherding 00:05:40.86\00:05:43.91 and there the great characteristic 00:05:43.94\00:05:48.97 that made him ready for ministry was humility. 00:05:49.00\00:05:52.64 Where he would humbly, listen to Jesus 00:05:52.67\00:05:54.94 where he would humbly serve and do his will. 00:05:54.97\00:05:57.79 And so it's rather interesting that the young people 00:05:57.82\00:06:00.53 are to focus their attention on listening to the elders, 00:06:00.56\00:06:05.16 submitting to their leadership. 00:06:05.19\00:06:06.89 And the elders are to focus their attention 00:06:06.92\00:06:09.53 on service to the flock. 00:06:09.56\00:06:11.32 In both cases, there is something 00:06:11.35\00:06:13.34 that you're giving to the other. 00:06:13.37\00:06:15.61 You're giving either your service, or you are giving, 00:06:15.64\00:06:19.61 shall we say your ears to listen to them. 00:06:19.64\00:06:22.49 And both are in submission to God. 00:06:22.52\00:06:25.31 And how does Peter bring out 00:06:25.34\00:06:26.71 this sense of listening to one another? 00:06:26.74\00:06:29.68 Well, in verses 5 and 6, 00:06:29.71\00:06:31.31 he expands it beyond just the young people. 00:06:31.34\00:06:34.12 We'll just look at this verses here, 00:06:34.15\00:06:36.45 where he says, okay, he says, 00:06:36.48\00:06:38.61 "Younger to be subject to the elders." 00:06:38.64\00:06:40.41 And then he says, "Clothe yourselves 00:06:40.44\00:06:42.28 all of you with humility toward one another. 00:06:42.31\00:06:46.24 For God opposes the proud, 00:06:46.27\00:06:48.11 but gives grace to the humble." 00:06:48.14\00:06:50.08 It was interesting that humility was something 00:06:50.11\00:06:54.60 that Peter displayed in that story, 00:06:54.63\00:06:56.28 we read in John Chapter 21. 00:06:56.31\00:06:59.18 And humility is what Peter emphasizes here, 00:06:59.21\00:07:02.67 the need for humility. 00:07:02.70\00:07:04.07 He supports it with the text 00:07:04.10\00:07:05.47 from the Book of Proverbs, Proverbs 3:34. 00:07:05.50\00:07:07.82 And I like us to read the context 00:07:07.85\00:07:09.36 of that Proverbs 3:28-35. 00:07:09.39\00:07:16.04 Okay, so we are looking at Proverbs 3. 00:07:16.07\00:07:17.97 Proverbs Chapter 3. Proverbs 3:28-35. 00:07:18.00\00:07:25.69 "Do not say to your neighbor, 00:07:25.72\00:07:27.26 "Go, and come back, and tomorrow I will give it," 00:07:27.29\00:07:29.96 When you have it with you. 00:07:29.99\00:07:31.61 Do not devise evil against your neighbor, 00:07:31.64\00:07:34.41 for he dwells by you for safety's sake. 00:07:34.44\00:07:37.46 Do not strive with a man without a cause, 00:07:37.49\00:07:40.51 if he has done you no harm. 00:07:40.54\00:07:43.40 Do not envy the oppressor, and choose none of his ways, 00:07:43.43\00:07:47.00 for the perverse person is an abomination to the Lord, 00:07:47.03\00:07:51.65 but His secret counsel is within the upright. 00:07:51.68\00:07:55.40 The curse of the Lord is on the house of the wicked, 00:07:55.43\00:07:57.50 but He blesses the home of the just. 00:07:57.53\00:08:00.40 Surely He scorns the scornful, but gives grace to the humble." 00:08:00.43\00:08:05.25 And read verse 35 as well. 00:08:05.28\00:08:06.65 "The wise shall inherit glory, 00:08:06.68\00:08:08.44 but shame shall be the legacy of fools." 00:08:08.47\00:08:11.57 So this text that he quotes is verse 34. 00:08:11.60\00:08:14.15 "Toward the scorners, He is scornful, 00:08:14.18\00:08:15.55 but to the humble He gives favor. 00:08:15.58\00:08:17.17 And so all of these kind of concepts linking together. 00:08:17.20\00:08:21.34 There's a relationship to God which must influence 00:08:21.37\00:08:26.21 and change our relationship to other people around us. 00:08:26.24\00:08:28.98 See, so we have been talking about this consciousness of God 00:08:29.01\00:08:32.91 and that has to be expressed through our life 00:08:32.94\00:08:37.48 in how we treat other people. 00:08:37.51\00:08:39.67 I say sometimes that grace is a new set of glasses 00:08:39.70\00:08:45.02 that you are given to wear as a Christian. 00:08:45.05\00:08:47.44 You cannot look at people other people 00:08:47.47\00:08:49.65 the same way anymore. God has forgiven you. 00:08:49.68\00:08:53.07 Now you have to act differently 00:08:53.10\00:08:54.83 towards other people around you. 00:08:54.86\00:08:56.25 You have to have that humble attitude of care for them. 00:08:56.28\00:09:00.45 He returns to this command, He says, 00:09:00.48\00:09:02.37 "Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, 00:09:02.40\00:09:05.23 that He may lift you up in due time." 00:09:05.26\00:09:08.14 It's an interesting contrast. 00:09:08.17\00:09:10.51 Our humble attitude, our sense of our weakness before God. 00:09:10.54\00:09:16.58 And then His mighty hand we are weak but He is strong. 00:09:16.61\00:09:20.32 His mighty hand will lift us up. 00:09:20.35\00:09:23.32 Unless, we get the idea that God 00:09:23.35\00:09:24.72 is some kind of strong-armed bully. 00:09:24.75\00:09:27.49 It says that you are to cast all your cares on Him 00:09:27.52\00:09:30.69 because He cares about you. 00:09:30.72\00:09:34.95 Now where does Peter here go 00:09:34.98\00:09:36.35 with his last pair of antithesis? 00:09:36.38\00:09:39.32 All right, so let's take a look at that in verses 8 to 11. 00:09:39.35\00:09:45.37 "Be sober, be vigilant because your adversary the devil 00:09:45.40\00:09:49.44 walks about like a roaring lion, 00:09:49.47\00:09:51.27 seeking whom he may devour. 00:09:51.30\00:09:53.42 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, 00:09:53.45\00:09:55.29 knowing that the same sufferings are experienced 00:09:55.32\00:09:58.23 by your brotherhood in the world. 00:09:58.26\00:10:00.26 But may the God of all grace, 00:10:00.29\00:10:01.98 who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, 00:10:02.01\00:10:05.08 after you have suffered a while, 00:10:05.11\00:10:06.89 perfect, establish, 00:10:06.92\00:10:08.59 strengthen, and settle you. 00:10:08.62\00:10:10.68 To Him be the glory and the dominion 00:10:10.71\00:10:12.62 forever and ever. Amen." 00:10:12.65\00:10:15.28 All right, so it's interesting here 00:10:15.31\00:10:16.68 that the final set of contrasts in this book. 00:10:16.71\00:10:20.34 We've seen all kinds of contrasts 00:10:20.37\00:10:23.01 throughout the book. 00:10:23.04\00:10:24.41 You know, back and forth and back and forth 00:10:24.44\00:10:26.41 different ideas things that, you know, 00:10:26.44\00:10:29.07 seem to be against each other all the time. 00:10:29.10\00:10:32.37 The last set of antitheses is not a contrast of ideas. 00:10:32.40\00:10:38.47 It is a contrast of individuals. 00:10:38.50\00:10:40.85 It's a battle or a controversy between individuals. 00:10:40.88\00:10:44.85 And the two individuals are not human beings. 00:10:44.88\00:10:47.98 They are the devil and God. 00:10:48.01\00:10:51.30 We are fighting each other and he uses this phraseology, 00:10:51.33\00:10:56.56 He says that the devil 00:10:56.59\00:11:01.72 walks about like a roaring lion, 00:11:01.75\00:11:07.14 seeking someone to devour. 00:11:07.17\00:11:10.37 Now I lived in Africa for six years 00:11:10.40\00:11:14.33 and they have lions still on the loose. 00:11:14.36\00:11:17.86 It's surprising when you're out in the bush, 00:11:17.89\00:11:21.11 how you can't see a lion 00:11:21.14\00:11:23.25 because they just blend right into the grass, 00:11:23.28\00:11:26.53 that's, you know, going brown 00:11:26.56\00:11:28.53 and so forth in most of the different times of the year. 00:11:28.56\00:11:31.60 And they are hard to see, but I'll tell you what. 00:11:31.63\00:11:35.06 When you hear a lion's roar and you are out there 00:11:35.09\00:11:38.13 in the bush, it is scary. 00:11:38.16\00:11:40.90 Lions have an incredible power to roar. 00:11:40.93\00:11:45.07 Interestingly enough scientists' tell us that cats 00:11:45.10\00:11:48.77 all the cats in the world have you the ability 00:11:48.80\00:11:51.32 to purr or to roar not both. 00:11:51.35\00:11:55.22 Some lions don't purr, they roar. 00:11:55.25\00:11:57.85 And kitty cats don't roar, they purr. 00:11:57.88\00:12:00.22 But a lion is, you know, just a ravenous beast 00:12:00.25\00:12:04.58 that you just-- it's scary to think of, 00:12:04.61\00:12:08.26 that you would be in a place the devil goes about 00:12:08.29\00:12:11.18 like a roaring lion, seeking somebody to devour. 00:12:11.21\00:12:15.25 How do we respond to that because apparently, 00:12:15.28\00:12:17.34 this is a very scary picture of the devil-- 00:12:17.37\00:12:20.77 Just going around like a roaring lion. It is. 00:12:20.80\00:12:22.96 It is quite a scary picture of the devil. 00:12:22.99\00:12:25.06 And I like us to see a little bit 00:12:25.09\00:12:26.58 of where this picture comes from. 00:12:26.61\00:12:29.88 It comes from the Book of Psalms. 00:12:29.91\00:12:33.48 And there are numerous Psalms, 00:12:33.51\00:12:35.48 but this particular one is Psalm 22 00:12:35.51\00:12:38.70 which is a messianic Psalm. 00:12:38.73\00:12:41.06 And this Psalm is interesting because of the way 00:12:41.09\00:12:45.93 it goes back and forth and back and forth between, 00:12:45.96\00:12:51.85 you might say the highs of glory and the lows of despair. 00:12:51.88\00:12:56.54 So I want to take a look at the Psalm. 00:12:56.57\00:12:59.89 I think probably first before we read the Psalm, Psalm 22. 00:12:59.92\00:13:05.24 We will take a little break and then when we come back 00:13:05.27\00:13:08.59 we'll have time to read it all the way through 00:13:08.62\00:13:11.14 and not miss out on time. 00:13:11.17\00:13:13.33 So let's take a little break at this point 00:13:13.36\00:13:14.96 and then we'll come back after a few messages. 00:13:14.99\00:13:17.75
