And we're back with "Books of the Book" 00:00:01.76\00:00:03.69 and we are studying here with Dr. Tom Shepherd. 00:00:03.72\00:00:07.34 Dr. Shepherd, you had a graphic here earlier 00:00:07.37\00:00:12.17 and it--Jesus pointed out how His calling to Peter, 00:00:12.20\00:00:16.16 the language He was using was lower language in love, 00:00:16.19\00:00:20.44 however his ministry calling was going higher and higher. 00:00:20.47\00:00:24.59 What kind of test was that about? 00:00:24.62\00:00:26.38 Yeah, it's kind of odd, you know, 00:00:26.41\00:00:28.27 you think that Peter would his-- 00:00:28.30\00:00:31.20 the questions would go higher and higher 00:00:31.23\00:00:33.57 and then the commission would go higher and higher as well. 00:00:33.60\00:00:35.80 But it's just the opposite 00:00:35.83\00:00:37.42 that as Jesus lowers this level of love 00:00:37.45\00:00:40.58 that He asked Peter about than the commission 00:00:40.61\00:00:43.56 that He has given seems to become more and more weighty 00:00:43.59\00:00:46.41 and more and more important. 00:00:46.44\00:00:48.84 So people kind of scratch their head about that 00:00:48.87\00:00:50.68 and say, "Well, why would that be?" 00:00:50.71\00:00:52.98 Well, of course, Jesus was testing him about love, 00:00:53.01\00:00:55.86 but in a sense really 00:00:55.89\00:00:57.34 what He was testing was humility. 00:00:57.37\00:00:59.76 And so the level of humility that Peter displayed 00:00:59.79\00:01:06.14 becomes I don't if you can say greater 00:01:06.17\00:01:09.16 because humility is about not being great. 00:01:09.19\00:01:12.37 But his humility shines forth stronger and stronger 00:01:12.40\00:01:16.91 as Jesus lowers the bar and asked these questions 00:01:16.94\00:01:19.96 to the point where Peter is completely dependent on Jesus 00:01:19.99\00:01:23.78 and displays that he's totally humble. 00:01:23.81\00:01:26.08 And that's the great training or the great commission 00:01:26.11\00:01:32.45 for ministry that you have this characteristic, 00:01:32.48\00:01:35.31 you this ability to be humble, 00:01:35.34\00:01:38.24 then you can be a great minister for Jesus. 00:01:38.27\00:01:40.67 Amen. Yeah. 00:01:40.70\00:01:42.07 Well, we keep reading here 00:01:42.10\00:01:43.47 in the Book of Peter last chapter. 00:01:43.50\00:01:46.01 It seems that Peter instructs the elders 00:01:46.04\00:01:47.76 to take care of the church, how does he do that? 00:01:47.79\00:01:51.23 Uh, well, here in this passage he-- 00:01:51.26\00:01:54.72 there are sets of what we call 00:01:54.75\00:01:58.17 antithesis, opposites in ministry. 00:01:58.20\00:02:00.88 We'll, first kind of go through them 00:02:00.91\00:02:02.28 and then a little later, we'll look at the graphic 00:02:02.31\00:02:04.40 that kind of displays all this in sort of graphic form. 00:02:04.43\00:02:08.19 But first we want to look at these, 00:02:08.22\00:02:10.69 he has these three pairs, 00:02:10.72\00:02:13.42 one way that you should do ministry, 00:02:13.45\00:02:15.47 the other way that you should not do ministry. 00:02:15.50\00:02:18.13 I have a sermon called, how to-- 00:02:18.16\00:02:20.42 based on this passage called 00:02:20.45\00:02:21.82 "How to run the church into the ground?" 00:02:21.85\00:02:24.64 And it's-- I remember 00:02:24.67\00:02:26.31 there was this lady in our office 00:02:26.34\00:02:27.71 she did not like that title, that was bad title, 00:02:27.74\00:02:30.87 but king of, you know, catch peoples attention. 00:02:30.90\00:02:33.34 And there are ways that you can do ministry 00:02:33.37\00:02:36.86 that will build people up and of course, 00:02:36.89\00:02:38.26 that's what Peter promotes. 00:02:38.29\00:02:39.94 But he pairs it with ways of ministry 00:02:39.97\00:02:42.90 that will tear people down. 00:02:42.93\00:02:45.18 It's important for us to notice the distinctions between them. 00:02:45.21\00:02:48.16 But we must not forget 00:02:48.19\00:02:49.56 the negative way that he refers to 00:02:49.59\00:02:51.26 because this will actually come up again 00:02:51.29\00:02:53.85 in our discussion in 2 Peter, all right. 00:02:53.88\00:02:57.26 So that's just a little direction of where we're headed 00:02:57.29\00:03:00.90 'cause we're gonna come to 2 Peter, pretty soon. 00:03:00.93\00:03:03.35 All right, so in verse 2, Chapter 5 verse 2, 00:03:03.38\00:03:06.86 gives us that first pair, would you read that? 00:03:06.89\00:03:09.14 "Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, 00:03:11.07\00:03:13.47 serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, 00:03:13.50\00:03:18.22 not for dishonest gain but eagerly." 00:03:18.25\00:03:21.51 All right, he actually gives two of the pairs there. 00:03:21.54\00:03:24.49 And he starts this shepherding metaphor, 00:03:24.52\00:03:27.44 "Shepherd the flock of God 00:03:27.47\00:03:28.84 that is among you, exercising oversight." 00:03:28.87\00:03:32.80 This verb for oversight is epískopol 00:03:32.83\00:03:37.92 from which we would get the word episcopal 00:03:37.95\00:03:40.12 or and in that kind of concept. 00:03:40.15\00:03:42.86 And it has the idea of oversight, 00:03:42.89\00:03:45.10 but it also had the idea of visiting, visiting. 00:03:45.13\00:03:49.46 And if you are gonna watch over a flock, 00:03:49.49\00:03:51.91 you have to be with them. 00:03:51.94\00:03:53.66 If you are gonna be an effective pastor, 00:03:53.69\00:03:56.64 you have to visit people 00:03:56.67\00:03:58.66 in their homes and pray with them. 00:03:58.69\00:04:00.92 And I'll tell you people really respond 00:04:00.95\00:04:04.12 to a visit from their pastor. 00:04:04.15\00:04:05.53 I remember years ago, being a pastor in Illinois 00:04:05.56\00:04:09.17 and I really believed in visiting. 00:04:09.20\00:04:12.01 And I came to the house of one of the deacons of the church 00:04:12.04\00:04:15.70 and he said something to me very sad. 00:04:15.73\00:04:18.18 He was thanking me, but he said very sad. 00:04:18.21\00:04:20.22 He said, Pastor, you're the first pastor 00:04:20.25\00:04:21.94 who had come to my house in 20 years. 00:04:21.97\00:04:23.68 Wow. I think that is just sad. 00:04:23.71\00:04:28.23 Pastors should be out visiting there people all the time. 00:04:28.26\00:04:32.09 So that's what Peter's people do. 00:04:32.12\00:04:33.90 And then the first point of reference he says, 00:04:33.93\00:04:36.02 "Not under compulsion but voluntarily or willingly 00:04:36.05\00:04:41.54 according to God," all right. 00:04:41.57\00:04:44.40 So when he says not under compulsion, 00:04:44.43\00:04:47.48 it may remind us when Paul talks about, 00:04:47.51\00:04:51.01 "God loves a cheerful giver." 00:04:51.04\00:04:52.41 You remember that passage, it's in 2 Corinthians 9 00:04:52.44\00:04:54.94 and he says, "God loves a cheerful giver 00:04:54.97\00:04:58.93 and you should give not under compulsion." 00:04:58.96\00:05:02.10 All right, this word compulsion 00:05:02.13\00:05:05.49 has the idea of pressure involved. 00:05:05.52\00:05:08.70 Somebody is pushing you, okay, 00:05:08.73\00:05:11.56 pressing you to do something 00:05:11.59\00:05:13.41 that you didn't want to do, all right. 00:05:13.44\00:05:17.61 Paul didn't want either internal reluctance 00:05:17.64\00:05:20.48 or external pressure to motivate people 00:05:20.51\00:05:23.27 to give for the church, all right. 00:05:23.30\00:05:25.65 And Peter is in a situation 00:05:25.68\00:05:27.82 where it was probably hard to find leaders for the church. 00:05:27.85\00:05:32.00 And so he says, don't push men into leadership too early. 00:05:32.03\00:05:38.58 You know, there would be that temptation 00:05:38.61\00:05:40.83 to push them, to move them forward. 00:05:40.86\00:05:42.72 He says it-- we can put it this way, 00:05:42.75\00:05:45.43 it must not be the push of men that motivates us. 00:05:45.46\00:05:47.75 It must be the pull of God. 00:05:47.78\00:05:49.70 We must do willingly, all right, so. 00:05:49.73\00:05:51.18 Then we come to the second of these concepts 00:05:51.21\00:05:57.18 and that is also in verse 2. 00:05:57.21\00:05:59.38 Would you read verse 2, once one time? 00:05:59.41\00:06:02.10 "Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, 00:06:02.13\00:06:04.56 serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, 00:06:04.59\00:06:09.11 not for dishonest gain but eagerly." 00:06:09.14\00:06:12.03 Mm-hmm, okay, and he has in there as, 00:06:12.06\00:06:15.26 as God would have you do it. 00:06:15.29\00:06:16.85 So again, the reference point is God as Peter found Christ 00:06:16.88\00:06:21.90 as the reference point of his ministry. 00:06:21.93\00:06:24.03 So God is the reference point of our ministry. 00:06:24.06\00:06:26.63 He says that you are not to do ministry in order to-- 00:06:26.66\00:06:34.30 you shouldn't be pushed into it. 00:06:34.33\00:06:35.70 You should do it willingly 00:06:35.73\00:06:37.10 and you shouldn't do it for shameful gain, 00:06:37.13\00:06:39.90 but you should do it eagerly. 00:06:39.93\00:06:43.80 In John 10, Jesus talked about 00:06:43.83\00:06:48.03 the shepherd versus the hired hand. 00:06:48.06\00:06:51.88 He said the shepherd loves the sheep 00:06:51.91\00:06:54.24 and guards them not thinking of himself, right? 00:06:54.27\00:06:58.17 But the hired hand, what's he thinking off? 00:06:58.20\00:07:00.81 Well, pretty much his paycheck. 00:07:00.84\00:07:04.78 And when the robbers come or the wolf comes, 00:07:04.81\00:07:08.92 what does the hired man do? He run away. 00:07:08.95\00:07:11.65 He runs away, yeah, because he doesn't worry. 00:07:11.68\00:07:16.53 His concern is not the sheep. 00:07:16.56\00:07:19.12 His concern is his paycheck and his own, 00:07:19.15\00:07:23.30 you know, his own benefits, okay. 00:07:23.33\00:07:26.37 Now there are benefits to leadership, 00:07:26.40\00:07:29.88 a lot of people find that out. 00:07:29.91\00:07:31.49 Some of them, sometimes it's financial 00:07:31.52\00:07:33.66 other times it's honor, other times it's power, 00:07:33.69\00:07:37.51 other times it's decision making. 00:07:37.54\00:07:39.29 These are all aspects that go along with leadership. 00:07:39.32\00:07:45.04 But these are not the right motives 00:07:45.07\00:07:48.19 for Christian ministry to gain these things, you know. 00:07:48.22\00:07:52.45 Of course, pastors have to have a living wage 00:07:52.48\00:07:54.79 and, you know, they'll have part of leadership, 00:07:54.82\00:07:57.25 part of decision making. 00:07:57.28\00:07:58.79 But the goal isn't to be, 00:07:58.82\00:08:01.51 to get all of these kinds of things, 00:08:01.54\00:08:03.45 you know, surround yourself where there's power, 00:08:03.48\00:08:05.51 where there's money, all these different kinds of things. 00:08:05.54\00:08:08.17 It must not be for the money that we do ministry. 00:08:08.20\00:08:11.32 It's rather, it's for the mission. 00:08:11.35\00:08:14.40 It's not what you can get out of it, 00:08:14.43\00:08:16.70 but it's rather what you can give to help others. 00:08:16.73\00:08:20.48 Right this leads us to verse 5-- verse 3, I'm sorry. 00:08:20.51\00:08:24.32 "Nor as being lords over those who entrusted to you, 00:08:24.35\00:08:29.70 but being examples to the flock." 00:08:29.73\00:08:33.29 And when-- verse 3? 00:08:33.32\00:08:35.17 This is verse 3, yeah. 00:08:35.20\00:08:36.98 He says, "Not domineering over those in your charge, 00:08:37.01\00:08:39.08 but being examples to the flock." 00:08:39.11\00:08:42.02 You are not sent to be a master 00:08:42.05\00:08:43.47 you're supposed to be a mentor to the flock. 00:08:43.50\00:08:45.44 There's a wonderful story in Mark 10, 00:08:45.47\00:08:47.47 we'll just turn to real quickly. 00:08:47.50\00:08:49.13 Mark 10, there is this story of the disciples, 00:08:49.16\00:08:55.17 James and John and they come to Jesus 00:08:57.61\00:09:00.71 and they want Him to give them a favor. 00:09:00.74\00:09:05.25 And so, we're reading now in Mark Chapter 10. 00:09:05.28\00:09:11.41 Well, no wonder, I'm in Matthew Chapter 10, 00:09:13.33\00:09:15.23 it didn't look quite right. 00:09:15.26\00:09:17.12 Okay, so we're in Chapter 10 of verse-- 00:09:17.15\00:09:19.81 Verse 35, we start in verse 35. Okay. 00:09:19.84\00:09:22.99 "Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, 00:09:23.02\00:09:25.04 came to Him, saying, 'Teacher, 00:09:25.07\00:09:26.78 we want You to do for us whatever we ask.' 00:09:26.81\00:09:30.51 And He said to them, 00:09:30.54\00:09:32.12 'What do you want Me to do for you?' 00:09:32.15\00:09:34.01 They said to Him, 'Grant us that we may sit, 00:09:34.04\00:09:36.87 one on Your right hand and the other on Your left, 00:09:36.90\00:09:40.04 in Your glory.' 00:09:40.07\00:09:41.44 But Jesus said to them, 'You do not know what you ask. 00:09:41.47\00:09:44.20 Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, 00:09:44.23\00:09:46.62 and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized?' 00:09:46.65\00:09:50.93 So they said to Him, 'We are able.' 00:09:50.96\00:09:52.89 So Jesus said to them, 00:09:52.92\00:09:54.50 'You will indeed drink the cup that I drink, 00:09:54.53\00:09:57.51 and with the baptism I am baptized with 00:09:57.54\00:10:00.07 you will be baptized, 00:10:00.10\00:10:03.05 but to sit on My right hand 00:10:03.08\00:10:05.07 and on My left is not Mine to give, 00:10:05.10\00:10:07.49 but it is for those for whom it is prepared.' " 00:10:07.52\00:10:11.55 All right, well, these disciples came to Jesus 00:10:11.58\00:10:13.61 with that wonderful discipleship principle, me first. 00:10:13.64\00:10:18.10 They said we want to be on Your right and Your left. 00:10:18.13\00:10:19.57 Jesus said, you don't know what you're asking for. 00:10:19.60\00:10:21.99 He said to sit on My right and My left. 00:10:22.02\00:10:24.36 There you see, they didn't realize that 00:10:24.39\00:10:25.81 what they were asking for was to go to the cross with Him, 00:10:25.84\00:10:28.01 to be on His right and on His left. 00:10:28.04\00:10:29.77 And that's where two thieves ended up, you know. 00:10:29.80\00:10:32.21 And John and James said, oh, yeah, we can do that. 00:10:32.24\00:10:35.10 And they didn't quite understand it, 00:10:35.13\00:10:36.79 but Jesus then points out to them 00:10:36.82\00:10:38.64 and to the other disciples just what ministry is about. 00:10:38.67\00:10:41.63 If you look in verse 42, 00:10:41.66\00:10:43.64 when he calls the disciples together, 00:10:43.67\00:10:45.39 He says, "You know that those 00:10:45.42\00:10:46.79 who are considered rulers to the Gentiles, 00:10:46.82\00:10:48.80 lorded over them, 00:10:48.83\00:10:50.20 and their great ones exercise the authority over them. 00:10:50.23\00:10:53.50 But it shall not be so among you, 00:10:53.53\00:10:56.02 but whoever would be great among you must be your servant. 00:10:56.05\00:10:58.89 And whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. 00:10:58.92\00:11:02.31 For even the Son of Man came not to be served, 00:11:02.34\00:11:04.68 but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many." 00:11:04.71\00:11:09.03 Christian ministry is about service to others. 00:11:09.06\00:11:11.64 It's not about giving power to yourself. 00:11:11.67\00:11:13.75 It's not that being a master over everybody else. 00:11:13.78\00:11:16.70 If you will get down on your feet-- 00:11:16.73\00:11:18.95 on your knees and you will wash other people's feet, 00:11:18.98\00:11:21.23 that's the idea, service in ministry. 00:11:21.26\00:11:24.10 Now, we have this graphic that shows 00:11:24.13\00:11:25.69 these three pairs of antithesis together 00:11:25.72\00:11:28.60 and just displays what dishonorable leadership is like 00:11:28.63\00:11:32.14 and what honorable leadership is like. 00:11:32.17\00:11:34.36 Dishonorable leadership is under compulsion, 00:11:34.39\00:11:36.58 somebody pushed you into it. 00:11:36.61\00:11:38.29 And then you start thinking about the money, 00:11:38.32\00:11:40.38 if you're gonna in there, you may as well get some money, 00:11:40.41\00:11:42.46 while you are added suffering as much as you are. 00:11:42.49\00:11:45.10 And then while, while you're getting the money, 00:11:45.13\00:11:46.88 you may as well rule over other people 00:11:46.91\00:11:48.88 and take charge of them. 00:11:48.91\00:11:50.28 That's dishonorable leadership. That's not Christian leadership. 00:11:50.31\00:11:53.24 But honorable leadership 00:11:53.27\00:11:54.64 is what Peter puts out and promotes. 00:11:54.67\00:11:57.44 He says you do it willing. You are thinking about God. 00:11:57.47\00:11:59.90 He's your reference point. The way Jesus served. 00:11:59.93\00:12:02.25 You're eager to do it, you do it freely 00:12:02.28\00:12:04.81 and you're an example to the flock. 00:12:04.84\00:12:07.39 This brings us to our last verse which is verse 4, 00:12:07.42\00:12:11.57 where Peter displays the outcome. 00:12:11.60\00:12:13.75 He says, "When the Chief Shepherd appears, 00:12:13.78\00:12:16.01 you will receive the unfading crown of glory." 00:12:16.04\00:12:20.88 Some people think that there are no rewards in heaven 00:12:20.91\00:12:25.52 for those who have served Jesus. 00:12:25.55\00:12:27.69 But that's not how Jesus depicted it. 00:12:27.72\00:12:30.29 He said, yes, there will be a great reward for you. 00:12:30.32\00:12:32.75 And Peter puts this forth too, 00:12:32.78\00:12:35.26 he says, there will be an unfading crown of glory. 00:12:35.29\00:12:37.77 Can you imagine the joy of ministry? 00:12:37.80\00:12:41.86 It's not the crown so much 00:12:41.89\00:12:43.26 to seeing people who have given their hearts to Christ 00:12:43.29\00:12:47.27 eternally saved in the kingdom of God. 00:12:47.30\00:12:50.74 I was recently involved in evangelist meetings 00:12:50.77\00:12:52.93 and we baptized--God blessed us with a lady being baptized. 00:12:52.96\00:12:56.37 She was so happy on that day of her baptism. 00:12:56.40\00:12:58.82 What a joy to see somebody giving their hearts to Christ 00:12:58.85\00:13:02.24 and making that commitment to follow Him? 00:13:02.27\00:13:04.87 That's the joy of ministry. 00:13:04.90\00:13:06.68 That's what God wants for you and me. 00:13:06.71\00:13:08.72 And that's what drove Peter and that's what he remembered 00:13:08.75\00:13:11.77 from this experience that he had in Jesus. 00:13:11.80\00:13:13.89 My friends, God may give some 00:13:13.92\00:13:15.99 wonderful kind of ministry to you. 00:13:16.02\00:13:18.26 Whatever that ministry is, carry it forth in the way 00:13:18.29\00:13:21.08 that Peter expresses it here. 00:13:21.11\00:13:22.80 You will be great blessing to the flock of God 00:13:22.83\00:13:25.30 and you, yourself will be greatly blessed. 00:13:25.33\00:13:27.53 God has in store for you an unending, 00:13:27.56\00:13:29.64 unfading crown of glory. 00:13:29.67\00:13:31.89 We'll see you next time. 00:13:31.92\00:13:33.30
