Hello and welcome to "Books of the Book." 00:00:21.83\00:00:23.93 My name is Deyvy Rodriquez 00:00:23.96\00:00:25.33 and with me is Dr. Tom Shepherd. 00:00:25.36\00:00:27.09 He is a professor at Andrews University. 00:00:27.12\00:00:29.80 He teaches New Testament 00:00:29.83\00:00:31.60 at the Theological Seminary there. 00:00:31.63\00:00:34.89 Dr. Shepherd, welcome. Thank you. 00:00:34.92\00:00:36.86 Before we begin our study of 1 Peter, 00:00:36.89\00:00:39.13 the last chapter actually we're doing today. 00:00:39.16\00:00:41.08 Tell us a little more about your family. 00:00:41.11\00:00:43.37 I married to Sherri Shepherd. 00:00:43.40\00:00:46.23 Her maiden name was Bomb. 00:00:46.26\00:00:47.63 And we've been married for 38 years. 00:00:47.66\00:00:50.02 And I've been blessed by God with two children, 00:00:50.05\00:00:52.72 Amy and Jonathan. They are both grown. 00:00:52.75\00:00:55.42 And Amy has three little children 00:00:55.45\00:00:58.30 with her husband Peter 00:00:58.33\00:00:59.70 and they are Malachi and Nadia and Isaiah. 00:00:59.73\00:01:03.01 And then our son Jonathan and his wife Laura 00:01:03.04\00:01:05.00 have a little grandson name, Nathaniel. Okay. 00:01:05.03\00:01:08.44 And Amy and Peter are teachers 00:01:08.47\00:01:10.25 down at Southwestern Adventist University 00:01:10.28\00:01:12.08 as biology professors 00:01:12.11\00:01:13.48 and Jonathan works with accounting. 00:01:13.51\00:01:15.81 And they live in the Berrien Spring area, 00:01:15.84\00:01:17.21 so we get to see little Nathaniel and Jonathan 00:01:17.24\00:01:20.67 and Laura quite regularly. Wonderful. 00:01:20.70\00:01:22.80 And so, what are we studying today? 00:01:22.83\00:01:24.75 Today we're looking at 1 Peter 5:1-4. 00:01:24.78\00:01:27.93 This is the last chapter of the book. 00:01:27.96\00:01:30.07 And now he is going to talk 00:01:30.10\00:01:31.47 to the Christian community once again. 00:01:31.50\00:01:34.29 So let's read 1 Peter 5:1-4. Okay. 00:01:34.32\00:01:39.30 "The elders who are among you I exhort, 00:01:39.33\00:01:41.87 I who am a fellow elder 00:01:41.90\00:01:43.56 and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, 00:01:43.59\00:01:46.04 and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed, 00:01:46.07\00:01:49.32 shepherd the flock of God which is among you, 00:01:49.35\00:01:52.94 serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly 00:01:52.97\00:01:57.61 not for dishonest gain but eagerly, 00:01:57.64\00:02:01.14 nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, 00:02:01.17\00:02:04.18 but being examples to the flock 00:02:04.22\00:02:07.58 and when the Chief Shepherd appears, 00:02:07.61\00:02:09.46 you will receive the crown of glory 00:02:09.49\00:02:11.76 that does not fade away." All right. 00:02:11.79\00:02:14.78 Now Peter opens this section in a very unusual way. 00:02:14.81\00:02:18.89 Why does he do that? 00:02:18.92\00:02:20.29 Well, the interesting thing is that he uses the term 00:02:20.32\00:02:23.71 that's used nowhere else in the New Testament. 00:02:23.74\00:02:25.89 He calls himself a fellow elder. 00:02:25.92\00:02:29.70 He says, "I'm talking to the elders." 00:02:29.73\00:02:31.12 And he says, "I'm a fellow elder." 00:02:31.15\00:02:33.63 You might expect that he would actually call himself an apostle 00:02:33.66\00:02:37.76 because that's what he did at the beginning of the book. 00:02:37.79\00:02:39.89 And apostle is so much higher than an elder, 00:02:39.92\00:02:42.90 you know, it's like way up in the sky. 00:02:42.93\00:02:45.42 And you wonder, why use a term 00:02:45.45\00:02:47.84 that puts him on the same level with each other's elders? 00:02:47.87\00:02:52.68 I think the answer to that, ties into the whole metaphor 00:02:52.71\00:02:59.84 that controls these four verses 00:02:59.87\00:03:03.20 and that is the metaphor of the flock and the shepherd. 00:03:03.23\00:03:09.75 He describes a variety of things in this passage 00:03:09.79\00:03:13.96 that have this overarching kind of ring to them of, 00:03:13.99\00:03:18.87 a metaphor of a person taking care 00:03:18.90\00:03:21.63 of a flock sheep or goats or something like that. 00:03:21.66\00:03:25.78 And the interesting parallel to this passage 00:03:25.81\00:03:29.20 is actually foundi in the gospel of John Chapter 21. 00:03:29.23\00:03:34.43 So we want to turn over to John 21 to see this story. 00:03:34.46\00:03:41.08 This is the last chapter of the gospel of John. 00:03:41.11\00:03:45.06 "And Jesus has risen from the dead. 00:03:45.09\00:03:49.63 The disciples have seen him, 00:03:49.66\00:03:51.58 recognized him as the risen Lord." 00:03:51.61\00:03:55.52 And you read the end of John Chapter 20, 00:03:55.55\00:04:00.58 he tells you why he wrote his book 00:04:00.61\00:04:02.61 and you say, well, that's a good ending to the book. 00:04:02.64\00:04:05.61 And then he says well, I have another story to tell you. 00:04:05.64\00:04:09.49 And he tells the story of the disciples 00:04:09.52\00:04:11.76 going to the Sea of Galilee. 00:04:11.79\00:04:14.21 The Sea of Tiberias is called here. 00:04:14.24\00:04:16.58 And they go fishing. 00:04:16.61\00:04:17.98 You remember the story, they catch nothing that night. 00:04:18.01\00:04:20.69 And Jesus is standing on the shore afterwards 00:04:20.72\00:04:25.72 and He calls out to them, "Children, 00:04:25.75\00:04:27.24 do you have any fish?" 00:04:27.27\00:04:28.64 And they said, "No." 00:04:28.67\00:04:30.08 And He says, "Cast the net 00:04:30.11\00:04:31.63 on the right side of the boat and you'll find something." 00:04:31.66\00:04:34.32 They cast the net and they can't pull in the net, 00:04:34.35\00:04:37.50 it's so full of fish. 00:04:37.53\00:04:39.61 And John, the beloved disciple turns to Peter 00:04:39.64\00:04:43.60 and he says, "It's the Lord." 00:04:43.63\00:04:46.91 And that's all that Peter needs to hear. 00:04:46.94\00:04:48.46 He throws on his clothes, 00:04:48.49\00:04:49.97 he jumps into the water and swims to shore. 00:04:50.00\00:04:52.38 And then they all come 00:04:52.41\00:04:54.79 and they eat breakfast together with Jesus. 00:04:54.82\00:04:59.01 The food is miraculously there. 00:04:59.04\00:05:01.59 And He says, "Bring some of the fish." 00:05:01.62\00:05:03.02 And they have this meal together. 00:05:03.05\00:05:05.68 John says that, "No one dares to ask Him who He is." 00:05:05.71\00:05:08.27 He said, "They all knew it was the Lord, 00:05:08.30\00:05:10.93 it was Jesus, the risen Lord." 00:05:10.96\00:05:13.24 Then there is this very interesting interchange, 00:05:13.27\00:05:16.92 exchange between Jesus and Peter. 00:05:16.95\00:05:20.37 We want to read about it. It's in John 21:15-19. 00:05:20.40\00:05:26.91 So I want you to read this passage. 00:05:26.94\00:05:28.31 And let's keep track of things in here 00:05:28.34\00:05:30.23 'cause there is this set three questions 00:05:30.26\00:05:32.53 and three answers and so forth. Okay. 00:05:32.56\00:05:35.01 "So when they had eaten breakfast, 00:05:35.04\00:05:37.10 Jesus said to Simon Peter, 'Simon, son of Jonah, 00:05:37.13\00:05:40.27 do you love Me more than these?" 00:05:40.30\00:05:42.24 He said to Him. He said to him, "Yes, Lord. 00:05:42.27\00:05:45.58 You know that I love you." 00:05:45.61\00:05:47.36 He said to him, "Feed my lambs." 00:05:47.39\00:05:50.42 He said to him again a second time, 00:05:50.45\00:05:52.41 "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?" 00:05:52.44\00:05:54.83 He said to Him, "Yes, Lord. You know that I love You." 00:05:54.86\00:05:58.23 He said to him, "Tend My sheep." 00:05:58.26\00:06:00.35 He said to him the third time, 00:06:00.38\00:06:01.75 "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?" 00:06:01.78\00:06:04.42 Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, 00:06:04.45\00:06:07.90 "Do you love Me?" 00:06:07.93\00:06:09.30 And he said to Him, "Lord, You know all these things. 00:06:09.33\00:06:12.78 You know that I love You." 00:06:12.81\00:06:14.41 Jesus said to him, "Feed My sheep. 00:06:14.44\00:06:18.08 Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, 00:06:18.11\00:06:20.65 you girded yourself and walked where you wished, 00:06:20.68\00:06:24.15 but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, 00:06:24.18\00:06:27.14 and another will guard you 00:06:27.17\00:06:30.82 and will carry you where you do not wish." 00:06:30.85\00:06:35.14 This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. 00:06:35.17\00:06:39.70 And when He had spoken this, He said to him, 00:06:39.73\00:06:42.27 "Follow Me." All right. 00:06:42.30\00:06:45.14 It's an interesting passage 00:06:45.17\00:06:47.19 and there's this three questions that Jesus asks him. 00:06:47.22\00:06:51.57 We are reminded that Peter denied Jesus three times. 00:06:51.60\00:06:55.61 And here Jesus asks him a question three times. 00:06:55.64\00:07:00.79 Peter responds three times. 00:07:00.82\00:07:03.22 Three times Jesus gives him a commission. 00:07:03.25\00:07:07.47 He has been a fisherman 00:07:07.50\00:07:08.87 and he is not gonna be a fisherman anymore. 00:07:08.90\00:07:10.96 He says, "Feed my lambs." 00:07:10.99\00:07:12.78 He says, "Tend my sheep." 00:07:12.81\00:07:14.35 He says, "Feed my sheep." 00:07:14.38\00:07:17.74 So we wonder what in the world is going on in this passage. 00:07:17.77\00:07:22.72 How does this take-- What is Jesus doing 00:07:22.75\00:07:25.49 and why does Peter respond as he does? 00:07:25.52\00:07:29.05 Well, you really have to look at Greek 00:07:29.08\00:07:32.16 to be able to recognize this easily. 00:07:32.19\00:07:35.66 Even then it takes a bit of pondering to look at. 00:07:35.69\00:07:38.80 There are several different words for love 00:07:38.83\00:07:41.29 and to love in Greek. 00:07:41.32\00:07:44.95 The one that is very commonly used in the New Testament 00:07:44.98\00:07:47.58 to talk about the kind of love that God has for us is agapao. 00:07:47.61\00:07:51.57 We talk of agape as the noun and agapao as the verb. 00:07:51.60\00:07:55.95 There is another verb, philao 00:07:55.98\00:07:59.06 which means friendship kind of love, okay. 00:07:59.09\00:08:03.07 And Peter and Jesus are using these terms 00:08:03.10\00:08:07.38 throughout this discussion. 00:08:07.41\00:08:10.02 We have a graphic here that displays it 00:08:10.05\00:08:11.89 in a kind of a chart form that shows 00:08:11.92\00:08:15.89 what this love will look like and the ideas. 00:08:15.92\00:08:19.37 Now you'll kind have to take a look at this. 00:08:19.40\00:08:21.93 You got questions one, two and three. 00:08:21.96\00:08:24.93 You have Christ's question on the left 00:08:24.96\00:08:27.61 and then Peter's response, then his ministry commission. 00:08:27.64\00:08:32.85 You have level of love 00:08:32.88\00:08:34.39 and the level of ministry that are involved here. 00:08:34.42\00:08:36.73 Now when Jesus first asked him, He says, 00:08:36.76\00:08:40.20 "Do you love Me more than the rest of these do?" 00:08:40.23\00:08:43.57 And he uses agapao. 00:08:43.60\00:08:44.97 So, do you have the highest love? 00:08:45.00\00:08:46.37 In fact, do you have more love 00:08:46.40\00:08:47.77 than the rest of the disciples do for Me? 00:08:47.80\00:08:49.52 Now before Jesus died, Peter had said, 00:08:49.55\00:08:52.62 "Yes certainly, I sure do. 00:08:52.65\00:08:54.93 I have that love more than anybody else." 00:08:54.96\00:08:57.96 But now he is really humble. 00:08:57.99\00:09:00.43 In fact, he doesn't even dare to use the same word. 00:09:00.46\00:09:03.42 He uses, you see there on the graphic. 00:09:03.45\00:09:06.24 He uses the word, philao 00:09:06.27\00:09:08.17 which is a friendship kind of love. 00:09:08.20\00:09:10.72 Jesus asked them again. "Do you love Me?" 00:09:10.75\00:09:12.64 He doesn't say more than the rest of these. 00:09:12.67\00:09:16.13 He kind of lowers the bar a bit. 00:09:16.16\00:09:18.01 but He still uses agapao. 00:09:18.04\00:09:20.10 Peter again uses philao. 00:09:20.13\00:09:22.57 The third time around, now Jesus uses philao. 00:09:22.60\00:09:26.05 It's like He has lowered the bar down lower, you know. 00:09:26.08\00:09:28.97 And Peter is hurt this time. 00:09:29.00\00:09:31.71 And he says, but He still uses philao. 00:09:31.74\00:09:35.48 And people look at this and they pointed, 00:09:35.51\00:09:37.57 "What in the world is going on here?" 00:09:37.60\00:09:39.24 It's even worse when you return to the ministry 00:09:39.27\00:09:42.10 because the ministry commission 00:09:42.13\00:09:43.55 seems to start at the lowest level, 00:09:43.58\00:09:46.25 feeding the lambs, the near fights. 00:09:46.28\00:09:49.77 And then it goes up to a middle level, 00:09:49.80\00:09:51.99 perhaps, caring for more mature like taking them out, you know, 00:09:52.02\00:09:55.71 and then feeding the sheep. 00:09:55.74\00:09:57.20 Now this is like the highest level, 00:09:57.23\00:09:58.86 if you were the pastor of a university, 00:09:58.89\00:10:01.67 church or something, you know. 00:10:01.70\00:10:03.07 You don't just put anybody there, 00:10:03.10\00:10:04.93 you choose a person with the highest. 00:10:04.96\00:10:06.93 So Jesus conception of what He is requiring of. 00:10:06.96\00:10:10.23 Peter seems to go down 00:10:10.26\00:10:11.63 from the highest level down to the lower, 00:10:11.66\00:10:13.75 but His commission to him seems to go from lower to higher, 00:10:13.78\00:10:17.40 and it's very strange, moving away. 00:10:17.43\00:10:19.03 So why does He do this? 00:10:19.06\00:10:22.92 Well, He is testing him. He is testing him. 00:10:22.95\00:10:25.67 He denied him three times 00:10:25.70\00:10:27.24 and so He is testing him as well. 00:10:27.27\00:10:29.14 And He is saying He wants to see 00:10:29.17\00:10:32.22 how much Peter has repented. 00:10:32.25\00:10:37.12 Now how would Peter show repentance? 00:10:37.15\00:10:43.18 Well, if he were to make-- If Jesus said, 00:10:43.21\00:10:45.13 "Do you love me more than the rest of these?" 00:10:45.16\00:10:47.09 I sure do more than anybody else here. 00:10:47.12\00:10:51.08 That wouldn't show repentance. 00:10:51.11\00:10:52.96 That would show the same old brash Peter 00:10:52.99\00:10:55.29 who was very self-confident 00:10:55.32\00:10:57.96 considered himself better than everybody else. 00:10:57.99\00:11:00.74 Peter has learned an amazing lesson. 00:11:00.77\00:11:03.77 He went through the experience 00:11:03.80\00:11:05.26 of denying Jesus and the cross, seeing Jesus die on the cross. 00:11:05.29\00:11:12.06 And we get inklings from the other gospels 00:11:12.09\00:11:14.24 when we read the story that Peter didn't feel like 00:11:14.27\00:11:17.25 he belonged anymore with the rest of the disciples. 00:11:17.28\00:11:19.91 In Mark, the angel says to the women, 00:11:19.94\00:11:21.81 "Go tell his disciples." 00:11:21.84\00:11:24.30 And Peter, that he is supposed to meet them in Galilee. 00:11:24.33\00:11:28.37 So Peter felt that he didn't belong 00:11:28.40\00:11:31.51 and probably the other disciples did as well. 00:11:31.54\00:11:34.30 That he didn't deserve a place. 00:11:34.33\00:11:35.97 I mean, if we have somebody today 00:11:36.00\00:11:37.86 who destroys their ministry, you know, 00:11:37.89\00:11:39.69 they do some foolish action and just do something terrible, 00:11:39.72\00:11:43.71 they won't be hired by the church conference 00:11:43.74\00:11:46.31 or, you know, by local churches too much. 00:11:46.34\00:11:48.48 They're pretty much out, you know. 00:11:48.51\00:11:50.89 So Peter displays a very sensitive concept of repentance. 00:11:50.92\00:11:57.86 He doesn't dare use the wonderful word agapao, 00:11:57.89\00:12:00.59 that Jesus has used that would be just cheeky. 00:12:00.62\00:12:03.23 That would be so arrogant to do that. 00:12:03.26\00:12:05.56 He takes a very low, "Lord," 00:12:05.59\00:12:07.36 he says, "Yes, you know, I love you." 00:12:07.39\00:12:08.76 And Jesus is like He is putting the knife 00:12:08.79\00:12:11.12 and He is just twisting it. 00:12:11.15\00:12:13.08 He brings the level down and finally He comes down 00:12:13.11\00:12:16.09 to the level where Peter started. 00:12:16.12\00:12:18.74 And He says, "Do you love me 00:12:18.77\00:12:20.14 with this fellowship love, this brotherly love." 00:12:20.17\00:12:23.02 And that's like questioning 00:12:23.05\00:12:24.42 what Peter had already been answering, 00:12:24.45\00:12:26.30 but Peter comes through with flying colors. 00:12:26.33\00:12:29.53 He says, "Lord, you know, everything. 00:12:29.56\00:12:31.92 You know, that I love you." 00:12:31.95\00:12:33.46 His point of reference has changed. 00:12:33.49\00:12:37.46 His point of reference has changed. 00:12:37.49\00:12:39.33 It's no longer himself. It's Jesus. 00:12:39.36\00:12:42.89 He says, "Lord, you know, everything." 00:12:42.92\00:12:45.13 And Jesus restores him to ministry 00:12:45.16\00:12:48.44 gives him a commission. 00:12:48.47\00:12:49.84 In fact, this is one of the greatest evidences 00:12:49.87\00:12:53.62 that Jesus rose from the dead. What? 00:12:53.65\00:12:56.57 That Peter was restored to ministry in the Christian church 00:12:56.60\00:13:01.00 because if Jesus had not restored him to ministry, 00:13:01.03\00:13:04.00 nobody else would have. 00:13:04.03\00:13:06.13 They would have left him out, 00:13:06.16\00:13:07.53 if they even started there, you know, their little group. 00:13:07.56\00:13:10.50 Peter wouldn't have been part of them. 00:13:10.53\00:13:11.90 So Peter never forgot this lesson 00:13:11.93\00:13:15.25 and when we turn to 1 Peter 5. 00:13:15.28\00:13:18.65 What concept of ministry does he link in to? 00:13:18.68\00:13:22.62 The shepherd 0and the flock, 00:13:22.65\00:13:24.77 he calls Jesus the Chief Shepherd 00:13:24.80\00:13:27.29 and he talks here about being a fellow elder 00:13:27.32\00:13:30.30 down at that level where he knew 00:13:30.33\00:13:33.96 he belonged along with everybody else. 00:13:33.99\00:13:36.30 He had true repentance in his life. 00:13:36.33\00:13:38.35 Well, we're just starting studying 1 Peter Chapter 5 00:13:38.38\00:13:41.74 and we'll come back and study 00:13:41.77\00:13:43.14 some more of these verses after a short break. 00:13:43.17\00:13:46.06
