And we're back to "Books of The Book." 00:00:01.40\00:00:03.22 We are studying the Books of 1 and 2 Peter, 00:00:03.25\00:00:05.57 but right now we are at the last Chapter 00:00:05.60\00:00:08.75 or Chapter 4 at the last verses 00:00:08.78\00:00:11.51 and we're talking about suffering. 00:00:11.54\00:00:12.95 And, Dr. Shepherd, why does Peter bring up 00:00:12.98\00:00:15.27 another way of suffering in verses 15 and 16? 00:00:15.30\00:00:18.97 All right, so we should--we should read those verses again. 00:00:19.00\00:00:20.96 So everybody's clear as what he is saying. 00:00:20.99\00:00:22.92 In verse 15, it says, "But let none of you suffer 00:00:22.95\00:00:27.05 as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler. 00:00:27.08\00:00:32.76 Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, 00:00:32.79\00:00:34.85 let him not be ashamed, 00:00:34.88\00:00:36.25 but let him glorify God in that name." 00:00:36.28\00:00:39.90 All right, so he says, it's good to suffer as a Christian, 00:00:39.93\00:00:44.76 but it's not good to suffer as thief or murderer 00:00:44.79\00:00:48.07 or something like that, 00:00:48.10\00:00:49.47 that something that Christians should not do. 00:00:49.50\00:00:52.24 It's part of his emphasis 00:00:52.27\00:00:53.64 on Christian character and lifestyle 00:00:53.67\00:00:55.81 that he has been emphasizing all through the book. 00:00:55.84\00:00:59.85 Don't do this, do this instead, 00:00:59.88\00:01:02.63 you know, don't follow the pagan way, 00:01:02.66\00:01:04.42 follow the Christian way. 00:01:04.45\00:01:05.97 If you live like the pagan, 00:01:06.00\00:01:07.37 it's gonna bring reproach on the Christian faith. 00:01:07.40\00:01:09.98 So society around them was pressing in on them, 00:01:10.01\00:01:12.85 but they were to stand true and he said, 00:01:12.88\00:01:15.32 and they're going to persecute you 00:01:15.35\00:01:18.10 and try to bring shame on you. 00:01:18.13\00:01:19.92 He said, "But you mustn't be ashamed." 00:01:19.95\00:01:21.79 He says, "You should glorify God in this name." 00:01:21.82\00:01:25.36 The name is Christian. 00:01:25.39\00:01:27.74 And it's one of the first places, 00:01:27.77\00:01:30.02 you know, the Antioch was the first place 00:01:30.05\00:01:32.31 they were called Christians. 00:01:32.34\00:01:33.99 But the term Christian isn't used 00:01:34.02\00:01:36.00 a lot of times in the New Testament. 00:01:36.03\00:01:37.83 This is one of the places where it shows up. Okay. 00:01:37.86\00:01:41.04 Verse 17, "For the time has come for judgment 00:01:41.07\00:01:43.52 to begin at the house of God. 00:01:43.55\00:01:46.31 And if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those 00:01:46.34\00:01:49.66 who do not obey the Gospel of God?" 00:01:49.69\00:01:52.36 Now, how does this verse here support these previous verses? 00:01:52.39\00:01:56.28 Okay, so he has been talking about suffering 00:01:56.31\00:01:59.33 as a Christian being persecuted by the pagans then he says, 00:01:59.36\00:02:03.58 "Don't do the wrong way, 00:02:03.61\00:02:05.75 don't be suffering as a murderer or a thief or anything." 00:02:05.78\00:02:09.37 And of course, that's out of step 00:02:09.40\00:02:11.04 with God's valuation, God's law. 00:02:11.07\00:02:13.40 You shouldn't follow that path. 00:02:13.43\00:02:14.80 You should follow the Christian path. 00:02:14.83\00:02:16.66 And then he says, "God is going to judge the world." 00:02:16.69\00:02:19.97 We have already talked about judgment before several times. 00:02:20.00\00:02:22.79 But here he, you know, continues this discussion. 00:02:22.82\00:02:26.08 It is time for judgment to begin at the household of God. 00:02:26.11\00:02:31.10 And of course, the household of God 00:02:31.13\00:02:33.31 is his whole metaphor for the church, isn't it? 00:02:33.34\00:02:37.11 That he has been using all through this book. 00:02:37.14\00:02:38.78 We are His children, He is our Father, 00:02:38.81\00:02:41.07 He has built this into a spiritual house 00:02:41.10\00:02:43.46 to offer sacrifices to Him. 00:02:43.49\00:02:45.52 And so now he says, and guess what? 00:02:45.55\00:02:48.81 That's where judgment is going to begin. 00:02:48.84\00:02:51.43 Now in the process what he's alluding to very strongly 00:02:51.46\00:02:54.88 is to Ezekiel 9:1-6. 00:02:54.91\00:02:59.32 So we need to read that passage in Ezekiel 00:02:59.35\00:03:01.17 just to get the context of Peter's ideas. 00:03:01.20\00:03:06.40 Ezekiel 9:1-6. Okay, and he says. 00:03:06.43\00:03:12.68 "Then He called out in my hearing with a loud voice, 00:03:12.71\00:03:15.86 saying, 'Let those who have charge over the city draw near, 00:03:15.89\00:03:19.65 each with a deadly weapon in his hand.' 00:03:19.68\00:03:22.46 And suddenly six men came from the direction of the upper gate, 00:03:22.49\00:03:25.73 which faces north, each with his battle-ax in his hand. 00:03:25.76\00:03:30.13 One man among them was clothed with linen 00:03:30.16\00:03:33.16 and had a writer's inkhorn at his side. 00:03:33.19\00:03:36.54 They went in and stood beside the bronze altar. 00:03:36.57\00:03:39.89 Now the glory of the God of Israel 00:03:39.92\00:03:42.66 had gone up from the cherub, 00:03:42.69\00:03:45.29 where it had been to the threshold of the temple. 00:03:45.32\00:03:50.18 And He came to the man clothed with linen, 00:03:50.21\00:03:52.44 who had the writer's inkhorn at his side. 00:03:52.47\00:03:55.83 And the Lord said to him, 00:03:55.86\00:03:57.27 'Go through the midst of the city, 00:03:57.30\00:03:59.65 through the midst of Jerusalem, 00:03:59.68\00:04:01.05 and put a mark on the foreheads of the men 00:04:01.08\00:04:04.46 who sigh and cry over all the abominations 00:04:04.49\00:04:08.52 that are done within it.' 00:04:08.55\00:04:11.14 Go to the others He said in my hearing. 00:04:11.17\00:04:13.66 'Go after him through the city and kill. 00:04:13.69\00:04:16.84 Do not let your eye spare, nor have any pity. 00:04:16.87\00:04:20.43 Utterly slay old and young men, 00:04:20.46\00:04:23.69 maidens and little children and women, 00:04:23.72\00:04:25.60 but do not come near anyone on whom is the mark 00:04:25.63\00:04:29.62 and begin at My sanctuary.' 00:04:29.65\00:04:32.10 So they began with the elders who were before the temple. 00:04:32.13\00:04:35.62 Then He said to them, 'Defile the temple, 00:04:35.65\00:04:38.16 and fill the courts with the slain. Go out.' 00:04:38.19\00:04:41.63 And they went out and killed in the city. 00:04:41.66\00:04:44.38 So it was, that while they were killing them, 00:04:44.41\00:04:47.16 I was left alone; and I fell on my face and cried out, 00:04:47.19\00:04:50.20 and said, 'Ah, Lord God. 00:04:50.23\00:04:52.26 Will You destroy all the remnant of Israel 00:04:52.29\00:04:54.82 in pouring out Your fury on Jerusalem?' 00:04:54.85\00:04:57.64 Then He said to me, 00:04:57.67\00:04:59.04 'The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah 00:04:59.07\00:05:01.45 is exceedingly great, and the land is full of bloodshed, 00:05:01.48\00:05:05.24 and the city full of perversity, for they say, 00:05:05.27\00:05:08.10 'The Lord has forsaken the land, and the Lord does not see.'" 00:05:08.13\00:05:12.79 All right, well, it's quite an amazing story, 00:05:12.82\00:05:14.63 isn't it there in Ezekiel? 00:05:14.66\00:05:16.23 And you notice that there are several things that go on here. 00:05:16.26\00:05:20.89 He has this executioners come to him in his vision. 00:05:20.92\00:05:24.94 And he also has a man with a writing case. 00:05:24.97\00:05:28.45 He sends the man out with the writing case to go out 00:05:28.48\00:05:32.20 and they're supposed to put a mark on people 00:05:32.23\00:05:35.66 who are crying over the abominations 00:05:35.69\00:05:38.94 of the land and of Jerusalem. 00:05:38.97\00:05:42.63 And they go out and they put a mark on their forehead, 00:05:42.66\00:05:45.58 these people who are faithful to God 00:05:45.61\00:05:49.03 and showing it by their weeping. 00:05:49.06\00:05:51.06 Then the executioners go and they start to kill. 00:05:51.09\00:05:53.61 They notice those who have a mark 00:05:53.64\00:05:56.20 and those who don't have a mark. 00:05:56.23\00:05:57.60 Now, of course, we know in the Book of Revelation, 00:05:57.63\00:05:59.97 we have something called the Seal of God. 00:06:00.00\00:06:02.15 And the Seal of God marks people 00:06:02.18\00:06:04.00 as His servants and protects them. 00:06:04.03\00:06:06.92 And those without the Seal of God will perish, 00:06:06.95\00:06:11.21 you know, at the end of time. 00:06:11.24\00:06:12.76 So here is Peter linking into Ezekiel's message as well 00:06:12.79\00:06:18.53 just like we get over in the Book of Revelation. 00:06:18.56\00:06:22.07 And he links into this message 00:06:22.10\00:06:23.67 and points out that there's a protecting mark. 00:06:23.70\00:06:26.18 And so judgment is going to begin with the household of God. 00:06:26.21\00:06:29.28 Begins with us and then it goes out from there. 00:06:29.31\00:06:32.02 And he says, well, if the-- 00:06:32.05\00:06:33.85 he quotes from Proverbs 11:31 and he says, 00:06:33.88\00:06:37.49 "Well, if the righteous person hardly is saved, 00:06:37.52\00:06:42.16 then what's going to happen to the wicked." 00:06:42.19\00:06:44.73 You know, there's no--there's not gonna be space for them. 00:06:44.76\00:06:47.36 So he has been talking about Christians 00:06:47.39\00:06:50.52 that they need to do good deeds and not bad deeds. 00:06:50.55\00:06:55.17 And then he supports us with the message of judgment. 00:06:55.20\00:06:57.12 He says, "Look, if you don't follow the message of God 00:06:57.15\00:07:02.49 you will be marked for destruction, 00:07:02.52\00:07:04.37 you have to follow-- you can't just play with God. 00:07:04.40\00:07:07.93 You have to have your faith has to lineup 00:07:07.96\00:07:11.35 with what He has been teaching you all through this book." 00:07:11.38\00:07:15.10 So now we are finishing Chapter 4, 00:07:15.13\00:07:17.35 but how does that he conclude the section? 00:07:17.38\00:07:19.46 Then he comes to verse 19. 00:07:19.49\00:07:22.23 And then he says, "Therefore that those who suffer 00:07:22.26\00:07:25.30 according to God's will entrust their souls 00:07:25.33\00:07:28.61 to a faithful creator while doing good." 00:07:28.64\00:07:33.22 Now in this verse 00:07:33.25\00:07:37.28 there are three interlocking ideas, okay. 00:07:37.31\00:07:41.63 Three interlocking ideas. 00:07:41.66\00:07:43.50 Suffering, suffering according to the will of God. 00:07:43.53\00:07:47.31 And we've talked about that already. 00:07:47.34\00:07:49.09 It's not God's will for us to suffer. 00:07:49.12\00:07:51.46 It's God's will for us to do good. 00:07:51.49\00:07:53.63 And if we suffer as a result, okay, 00:07:53.66\00:07:55.69 that's better than doing bad. 00:07:55.72\00:07:57.69 So suffering according to the will of God. 00:07:57.72\00:08:00.37 He talks about entrusting your soul, 00:08:00.40\00:08:03.48 entrusting your soul to the faithful creator. 00:08:03.51\00:08:07.32 And then he talks about doing good. 00:08:07.35\00:08:10.44 Now of these ideas the will of God 00:08:10.47\00:08:14.52 we've seen already it's been throughout the book. 00:08:14.55\00:08:17.35 It's a theme that runs through this book, 00:08:17.38\00:08:19.33 it focuses on the idea always of doing good. 00:08:19.36\00:08:23.53 It's usually linked up with concepts of suffering 00:08:23.56\00:08:28.98 or people around you or the pagans around you 00:08:29.01\00:08:31.51 giving you a difficult time. 00:08:31.54\00:08:33.19 In 1 Peter 2:15 he says, "That if you do good, 00:08:33.22\00:08:37.55 doing the will of God you'll shut the mouths 00:08:37.58\00:08:39.75 of ignorant people who are trying to say 00:08:39.78\00:08:42.12 bad things about you." 00:08:42.15\00:08:43.74 In 3:17, "It's better to do good and suffer than to do evil." 00:08:43.77\00:08:47.26 In 4:1-2, "Suffering persecution for living a Christian life 00:08:47.29\00:08:52.00 in according to with the will of God. 00:08:52.03\00:08:54.13 The Christians purpose is to live for the will of God 00:08:54.16\00:08:56.34 and not for human passions." 00:08:56.37\00:08:58.50 And then our passage here verse 19 00:08:58.53\00:09:01.79 where you're suffering and you're doing good. 00:09:01.82\00:09:03.49 So the will of God is always tied up with this, doing good, 00:09:03.52\00:09:07.21 doing the right thing and as a result you will suffer. 00:09:07.24\00:09:10.61 God does not want His people to suffer, 00:09:10.64\00:09:12.71 but He does want them to do the right thing. 00:09:12.74\00:09:14.84 And sometimes we have to have the courage to face off 00:09:14.87\00:09:17.05 against the evil and not let it out or take us. 00:09:17.08\00:09:20.58 Second then he talks about suffering 00:09:20.61\00:09:24.22 and entrusting ourselves to the faithful creator. 00:09:24.25\00:09:27.55 I wanna talk about that just a bit more, 00:09:27.58\00:09:30.23 but let me talk about the third point 00:09:30.26\00:09:31.63 and that is doing good throughout the book. 00:09:31.66\00:09:34.97 Christians are called to a high moral way of life 00:09:35.00\00:09:38.03 that expresses Christian ideals 00:09:38.06\00:09:41.32 to all around them, to all the world. 00:09:41.35\00:09:43.95 It is not enough simply to entrust one's life to God, 00:09:43.98\00:09:47.18 one must let him workout his goodwill in the life. 00:09:47.21\00:09:52.04 We must do good. 00:09:52.07\00:09:53.44 We must be about our Father's business to encourage others. 00:09:53.47\00:09:56.46 But I want to come back to this idea 00:09:56.49\00:09:57.94 of the concept of the faithful creator. 00:09:57.97\00:10:02.46 You wonder when he talks about this experience of suffering 00:10:02.49\00:10:07.65 and he says, "Entrust your life to God," that make sense. 00:10:07.68\00:10:12.06 You've heard that kind of idea before 00:10:12.09\00:10:14.20 and it seems to go along with, 00:10:14.23\00:10:16.46 you know, the whole theme of the book. 00:10:16.49\00:10:18.67 But this is one of the few places 00:10:18.70\00:10:20.50 where in the book where he makes reference to creation. 00:10:20.53\00:10:24.97 And he says, "You are supposed to entrust-- 00:10:25.00\00:10:29.54 entrust yourself to a faithful creator." 00:10:29.57\00:10:35.60 Now, why to a-- why this reference to creation? 00:10:35.63\00:10:39.30 Well, he likes to talk about eschatology. 00:10:39.33\00:10:42.62 You know, he talks about the end. 00:10:42.65\00:10:44.02 He talks about the Revelation of Jesus Christ. 00:10:44.05\00:10:45.42 He talks about how God is going to save you. 00:10:45.45\00:10:47.40 How things are gonna be good, 00:10:47.43\00:10:48.80 He's got an imperishable inheritance for you, 00:10:48.83\00:10:50.32 all things are gonna-- 00:10:50.35\00:10:51.72 he really focuses on that a great deal. 00:10:51.75\00:10:54.82 But once in a while he pulls back the curtain 00:10:54.85\00:10:56.90 and talks all the way back to the beginning. 00:10:56.93\00:10:59.49 You know, he talks about this idea of creation. 00:10:59.52\00:11:02.50 It's kind of like these big bookends. 00:11:02.53\00:11:05.00 God made the world, He was the faithful creator 00:11:05.03\00:11:08.18 and He is going to bring the world to an end. 00:11:08.21\00:11:09.92 He'll take care of you from beginning to end. 00:11:09.95\00:11:13.11 That's kind of the picture you get. 00:11:13.14\00:11:14.93 But there is something we need to notice 00:11:14.96\00:11:16.45 about this idea of faithful creator as well. 00:11:16.48\00:11:20.44 There are some people that present the idea of evolution 00:11:20.47\00:11:23.41 as the way that God created the world. 00:11:23.44\00:11:24.88 They called theistic evolution. 00:11:24.91\00:11:27.00 That God created life at the beginning of the world 00:11:27.03\00:11:29.71 and then He let it develop through long billions of years 00:11:29.74\00:11:33.96 from little molecules of little microbes, 00:11:33.99\00:11:38.27 you know, and then it built up and eventually came up 00:11:38.30\00:11:40.40 and then eventually became people. 00:11:40.43\00:11:42.22 And the process involved lots of death and lots of suffering, 00:11:42.25\00:11:46.72 lots of tooth and nail and the survival of the fittest. 00:11:46.75\00:11:50.71 Yeah. Now if that's the picture of creation that Peter had. 00:11:50.74\00:11:57.09 And he said, "O, give yourself to the Creator." 00:11:57.12\00:12:02.11 It would give them no comfort at all. 00:12:02.14\00:12:05.53 Consequently, we can say that 00:12:05.56\00:12:08.37 Peter did not have that view of creation. 00:12:08.40\00:12:11.79 Peter's view of creation was not, 00:12:11.82\00:12:14.09 you know, something coming up 00:12:14.12\00:12:15.78 through long billions of years working overtime, 00:12:15.81\00:12:19.26 survival of the fittest tooth and claw, 00:12:19.29\00:12:21.71 lots and lots of death and suffering, no. 00:12:21.74\00:12:25.52 Peter's view of creation, 00:12:25.55\00:12:27.51 the faithful creator is He who spoke and it was. 00:12:27.54\00:12:31.04 He expressed His word and there it was. 00:12:31.07\00:12:33.35 He made the world just simply from free out, 00:12:33.38\00:12:36.72 just He spoke and the world came into existence. 00:12:36.75\00:12:40.59 And so it was a faithful creator who set the world in place 00:12:40.62\00:12:46.79 and began it and, so they can entrust their lives. 00:12:46.82\00:12:51.73 This principle that shows us that 00:12:51.76\00:12:56.13 Peter rejects those kinds of ideas that later come on 00:12:56.16\00:13:00.14 and teaches evolutionary kind of concept. 00:13:00.17\00:13:02.95 So it's really a beautiful passage about suffering, 00:13:02.98\00:13:05.64 passage wonderful linkage into creation and God's faithfulness. 00:13:05.67\00:13:11.80 Dr. Shepherd, thank you once again. 00:13:11.83\00:13:13.20 I think we've run out of time. 00:13:13.23\00:13:14.73 And if we did have more time, 00:13:14.76\00:13:16.43 I think I'd ask you to help us or teach us 00:13:16.46\00:13:18.98 how to undo a tie and do it back again. Okay. 00:13:19.01\00:13:21.41 But maybe next time. 00:13:21.44\00:13:22.81 Well, thank you once again, friends. 00:13:22.84\00:13:24.21 God bless you till next time. 00:13:24.24\00:13:25.61
