Hello and welcome to "Books of The Book." 00:00:21.32\00:00:23.98 We are studying the Books of 1st and 2nd Peter 00:00:24.01\00:00:26.53 with Dr. Tom Shepherd. 00:00:26.56\00:00:27.93 He is a professor of New Testament Interpretation. 00:00:27.96\00:00:30.93 Dr. Shepherd, welcome. Thank you. 00:00:30.96\00:00:32.72 If I were to tell our audience here 00:00:32.75\00:00:34.95 that you are called the bowtie man, 00:00:34.98\00:00:37.48 I think they would probably have an idea why. 00:00:37.51\00:00:40.07 Why do they call you this and why? 00:00:40.10\00:00:42.27 I'm called the bowtie man 'cause that's what I always wear 00:00:42.30\00:00:44.60 when I am at the seminary. 00:00:44.63\00:00:46.04 And if they are looking for, if somebody is taking a class 00:00:46.07\00:00:48.82 and they say, oh, you were with Shepherd, 00:00:48.85\00:00:50.22 with Shepherd, Shepherd, who is he? 00:00:50.25\00:00:51.62 You're having a class with him. 00:00:51.65\00:00:53.02 Oh, he's the guy that wear bowties." 00:00:53.05\00:00:54.42 Yup, they know who I am 'cause they see me around. 00:00:54.45\00:00:56.69 Actually this particular tie that I'm wearing is interesting. 00:00:56.72\00:00:59.57 It's from the Horn Archaeological Museum there. 00:00:59.60\00:01:02.12 And it has the--it's a bowtie with the Dead Sea Scrolls on it, 00:01:02.15\00:01:06.35 and my wife got it from the-- they have a little store there 00:01:06.38\00:01:10.75 and she bought it there for my anniversary 00:01:10.78\00:01:13.56 or birthday or something like that. 00:01:13.59\00:01:15.72 Now I know the answer to this question, 00:01:15.75\00:01:17.51 but maybe there are some curious people out there. 00:01:17.54\00:01:19.70 Is this one of the-- are these your bowtie 00:01:19.73\00:01:21.76 is one of those that clip on here or? 00:01:21.79\00:01:23.63 No, no, I don't-- I don't wear clip ons. 00:01:23.66\00:01:25.66 I tie them myself. 00:01:25.69\00:01:27.06 When I first did it, it took me half an hour. 00:01:27.09\00:01:29.99 Okay. To tie the tie. 00:01:30.02\00:01:31.67 But now I can tie the tie 00:01:31.70\00:01:33.22 in about 15 seconds or so. All right. 00:01:33.25\00:01:36.60 Sometimes give demonstrations. 00:01:36.63\00:01:38.00 I won't today for the audience here, 00:01:38.03\00:01:40.04 but I-- Maybe next time. Maybe another time, yeah. 00:01:40.07\00:01:44.29 All right, what we are talking about 00:01:44.32\00:01:46.78 1 Peter and we are going to be discussing 00:01:46.81\00:01:49.61 from verses 12-19. Of Chapter 4? Yes. 00:01:49.64\00:01:53.39 So what is this last section of the book all about 00:01:53.42\00:01:56.70 or perhaps if you want-- 00:01:56.73\00:01:58.10 you want to do a short review of what we've been studying? 00:01:58.13\00:02:00.45 Yeah, well, we just have a graphic here that shows us 00:02:00.48\00:02:02.94 the outline of the book. 00:02:02.97\00:02:04.88 And this graphic we started with the first section 00:02:04.91\00:02:08.57 establishing the Household of God 00:02:08.60\00:02:09.97 that was Chapters 1:2-10. Rebirth that leads to holiness. 00:02:10.00\00:02:14.07 Metaphors of growth. The house of God. 00:02:14.10\00:02:16.05 All these things dealing with or focusing and revolving around 00:02:16.08\00:02:20.10 the establishment of these people and their mindset. 00:02:20.13\00:02:23.34 The second section we have just finished and that was, 00:02:23.37\00:02:27.48 how Christians are to live in the world 00:02:27.51\00:02:29.28 that goes from 2:11-4:11. 00:02:29.31\00:02:33.31 And that's about submission and an upright life. 00:02:33.34\00:02:36.89 Vindication that is to come. And living like a Christian. 00:02:36.92\00:02:40.58 This leads us to the last section of the book, 00:02:40.61\00:02:43.27 which is from 4:12-5:11, facing trouble and each other. 00:02:43.30\00:02:48.26 The first section we're gonna talk about 00:02:48.29\00:02:49.66 now is the fiery trial, then relationships in the church 00:02:49.69\00:02:52.93 and then fighting the devil 00:02:52.96\00:02:54.33 in relationship of God to the devil. 00:02:54.36\00:02:56.20 So the interesting thing is that this last section of the book 00:02:56.23\00:03:01.08 really parallels the second 00:03:01.11\00:03:02.90 or middle section of the book quite closely. 00:03:02.93\00:03:05.46 In those sections, they open with direct address. 00:03:05.49\00:03:09.07 They are followed by a general exhortation 00:03:09.10\00:03:11.65 that Peter gives to the people, 00:03:11.68\00:03:13.50 then there is instruction to specific groups 00:03:13.53\00:03:16.17 within the church, 00:03:16.20\00:03:17.92 then there is an appeal to all believers 00:03:17.95\00:03:19.99 with some reference to the scriptures, 00:03:20.02\00:03:21.85 and then finally there is a concluding doxology. 00:03:21.88\00:03:24.14 So the second section of the book 00:03:24.17\00:03:25.96 and the third section of the book 00:03:25.99\00:03:27.36 just seem to kind of lockstep as he is thinking 00:03:27.39\00:03:30.91 the process of how he'll present his message, 00:03:30.94\00:03:33.28 he walks through these things. 00:03:33.31\00:03:35.12 In 4:12-5:11, this is a last section of the book. 00:03:35.15\00:03:39.06 The topic of suffering 00:03:39.09\00:03:41.03 appears in each of the three sections of that-- 00:03:41.06\00:03:43.90 of this last part of the book that doesn't surprised us 00:03:43.93\00:03:46.37 since he is talking about suffering a lot. 00:03:46.40\00:03:48.61 He also talks about relationship to God. 00:03:48.64\00:03:51.87 Again, no big surprise because that's what 00:03:51.90\00:03:53.94 he has been talking about all these chapters, 00:03:53.97\00:03:56.45 and each subsection also refers to glory, 00:03:56.48\00:04:00.46 salvation and blessing for the faithful. 00:04:00.49\00:04:02.84 Again, similar kind of theme 00:04:02.87\00:04:05.55 as we've seen him talking about before. Okay. 00:04:05.58\00:04:09.48 And where does Peter begin the section? 00:04:09.51\00:04:11.82 All right, this section begins with a negative command. 00:04:11.85\00:04:15.71 So we look at verse-- verse 12 once for. 00:04:15.74\00:04:19.04 He says, "Beloved, do not." 00:04:19.07\00:04:20.71 So you see, here's the-- here's the command. "Do not. 00:04:20.74\00:04:24.37 Do not be surprised at the fiery trial 00:04:24.40\00:04:27.19 when it comes upon you to test you, 00:04:27.22\00:04:29.50 as though something strange were happening to you." 00:04:29.53\00:04:33.67 Now it's actually reminiscent of James 1:2-4 00:04:33.70\00:04:37.68 where James gives a positive command 00:04:37.71\00:04:40.28 that you should counted all joy when you suffer trials. 00:04:40.31\00:04:45.36 Peter describes the testing quality of trials. 00:04:45.39\00:04:48.83 We've already seen that before. 00:04:48.86\00:04:51.86 But he says, "You shouldn't think it strange." 00:04:51.89\00:04:55.20 Now there's kind of an interesting 00:04:55.23\00:04:56.65 parallel to what we just talked about before 00:04:56.68\00:04:59.57 back in 1 Peter 4:4. 00:04:59.60\00:05:02.16 We found that the Gentiles think it strange 00:05:02.19\00:05:06.79 that you don't run with them to their parties anymore, 00:05:06.82\00:05:10.08 but the Christians are not to think it strange 00:05:10.11\00:05:13.32 when the persecution comes. 00:05:13.35\00:05:15.25 So it says, "Though the pagans are in the dark 00:05:15.28\00:05:19.14 and the Christians are in the light." 00:05:19.17\00:05:21.07 See, they think it strange, 00:05:21.10\00:05:23.02 you shouldn't think it strange, you know. 00:05:23.05\00:05:24.62 This is the expected thing that's gonna happen 00:05:24.65\00:05:27.34 to a Christian in a sinful world 00:05:27.37\00:05:29.16 that you're gonna face these kind of problems. 00:05:29.19\00:05:32.38 And why does verse 13 put suffering and joy together? 00:05:32.41\00:05:36.09 Yeah, just take a look at that. Shall we read that? 00:05:36.12\00:05:37.49 Well, would you read those-- that verse, verse 13? 00:05:37.52\00:05:39.90 "But rejoice to the extent 00:05:39.93\00:05:41.54 that you partake of Christ's sufferings, 00:05:41.57\00:05:44.51 that when His glory is revealed, 00:05:44.54\00:05:45.91 you may also be glad with exceeding joy." 00:05:45.94\00:05:49.48 Now the present sufferings, he says are caused for joy now. 00:05:49.51\00:05:56.15 That's a-- that's pretty hard to take. 00:05:56.18\00:05:59.90 But he says, "It's a participation 00:05:59.93\00:06:02.24 in the sufferings of Christ." 00:06:02.27\00:06:04.22 I remember Ellen White said that, 00:06:04.25\00:06:05.78 "There is no higher privilege 00:06:05.81\00:06:07.18 than to suffer with Christ in this life." 00:06:07.21\00:06:11.42 And that's the kind of idea that we have here. 00:06:11.45\00:06:15.02 The joy is in being with Jesus 00:06:15.05\00:06:18.84 even when it's in situation of suffering. 00:06:18.87\00:06:22.63 He does point forward to the second coming, 00:06:22.66\00:06:26.04 you know, that's going to-- 00:06:26.07\00:06:28.38 that's going to come in and solve all problems. 00:06:28.41\00:06:32.25 But we still have this interesting paradox 00:06:32.28\00:06:35.68 of joy and suffering co-joined. 00:06:35.71\00:06:39.54 And it just doesn't seem almost to us like, 00:06:39.57\00:06:42.19 you know, something that that we should even accept, 00:06:42.22\00:06:46.29 but that's the kind of idea that he tells us about. 00:06:46.32\00:06:49.76 Let's read verse 14. 00:06:49.79\00:06:51.16 It says, "If you are reproached for the name of Christ, 00:06:51.19\00:06:54.34 blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory 00:06:54.37\00:06:56.53 and of God rests upon you. 00:06:56.56\00:06:59.01 On their part He is blasphemed, 00:06:59.04\00:07:01.77 but on your part He is glorified." 00:07:01.80\00:07:04.73 Here seems that continues that contrast. Yeah. 00:07:04.76\00:07:09.96 Here is reproach. He talks about reproach. 00:07:09.99\00:07:13.35 The problem of being reviled people heaping insults on you. 00:07:13.38\00:07:19.16 And he says, "He puts this together 00:07:19.19\00:07:20.75 with the idea of being blessed." You know, fortunate or happy. 00:07:20.78\00:07:27.25 And he describes this experience as 00:07:27.28\00:07:30.77 some kind of experience of rest 00:07:30.80\00:07:34.25 that the Spirit of God is resting upon you. 00:07:34.28\00:07:39.32 It's as though there is this incredible storm 00:07:42.50\00:07:45.95 going on around you. 00:07:45.98\00:07:47.72 People are reviling you, people are reproaching you, 00:07:47.75\00:07:51.00 people are giving you a harsh time. 00:07:51.03\00:07:54.54 And yet in the midst of this storm 00:07:54.57\00:07:58.40 there you are at rest. 00:07:58.43\00:08:00.64 There is a famous story about two painters 00:08:00.67\00:08:04.72 being given the assignment to make a painting 00:08:04.75\00:08:10.40 that depicted the concept of peace. 00:08:10.43\00:08:14.26 And one painter painted this beautiful quiet picture, 00:08:14.29\00:08:18.11 you know, lake and trees and the beautiful mountains, 00:08:18.14\00:08:20.98 you know, it just like, oh. It's just, you know, rest. 00:08:21.01\00:08:24.97 The other painter went a very different way. 00:08:25.00\00:08:27.63 There was this incredible storm 00:08:27.66\00:08:30.56 and you look anywhere on the canvas 00:08:30.59\00:08:32.22 it was just covered with, 00:08:32.25\00:08:33.85 you know, turmoil and back and forth and everything. 00:08:33.88\00:08:37.07 He's like, "What does this have to do with resting?" 00:08:37.10\00:08:38.81 Right in the center of the picture 00:08:38.84\00:08:42.70 was a mother bird sitting quietly on her nest 00:08:42.73\00:08:48.90 in the midst of the storm and this was rest. 00:08:48.93\00:08:53.33 So this is perhaps some of that kind of picture that we have. 00:08:53.36\00:08:57.41 Now he actually, he quotes a text, 00:08:57.44\00:09:01.13 he quotes from Isaiah Chapter 11. 00:09:01.16\00:09:03.54 I wanna look-- us to look at that text, 00:09:03.57\00:09:05.27 Isaiah 11:1-9. 00:09:05.30\00:09:11.11 Okay, so Isaiah Chapter 11. Verses 1-9. 00:09:11.14\00:09:16.82 This passage actually talks about the Messiah, 00:09:16.85\00:09:20.40 the coming of the Messiah 00:09:20.43\00:09:22.09 and we'll see how it links into our story here. 00:09:22.12\00:09:26.16 Isaiah 11:1-9. 00:09:26.19\00:09:28.82 "There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, 00:09:28.85\00:09:32.42 and a Branch shall grow out of his roots. 00:09:32.45\00:09:35.14 The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, 00:09:35.17\00:09:37.67 the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, 00:09:37.70\00:09:39.50 the Spirit of counsel and might, 00:09:39.53\00:09:41.61 the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. 00:09:41.64\00:09:44.71 His delight is in the fear of the Lord, 00:09:44.74\00:09:46.45 and He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, 00:09:46.48\00:09:50.42 nor decide by the hearing of His ears, 00:09:50.45\00:09:53.48 but with righteousness He shall judge the poor 00:09:53.51\00:09:55.91 and decide with equity for the meek of the earth. 00:09:55.94\00:10:00.06 He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, 00:10:00.09\00:10:03.83 and with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked. 00:10:03.86\00:10:08.14 Righteousness shall be the belt of His loins, 00:10:08.17\00:10:10.44 and faithfulness the belt of His waist. 00:10:10.47\00:10:13.37 'The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, 00:10:13.40\00:10:15.78 the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, 00:10:15.81\00:10:18.25 the calf and the young lion and the fatling together 00:10:18.28\00:10:22.31 and a little child shall lead them. 00:10:22.34\00:10:24.67 The cow and the bear shall graze. 00:10:24.70\00:10:26.88 Their young ones shall lie down together 00:10:26.91\00:10:29.67 and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. 00:10:29.70\00:10:32.78 The nursing child shall play by the cobra's hole, 00:10:32.81\00:10:36.51 and the weaned child shall put his hand in the viper's den. 00:10:36.54\00:10:41.62 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, 00:10:41.65\00:10:45.68 for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord 00:10:45.71\00:10:48.82 as the waters cover the sea.'" Beautiful, isn't it? 00:10:48.85\00:10:53.30 He describes the work of the Messiah 00:10:53.33\00:10:55.77 and what He will do. 00:10:55.80\00:10:57.17 And particularly we notice in verse 2 of Isaiah 11, 00:10:57.20\00:11:00.52 "The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, 00:11:00.55\00:11:03.62 the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, 00:11:03.65\00:11:06.20 the Spirit of counsel and might, 00:11:06.23\00:11:07.84 the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord." 00:11:07.87\00:11:10.95 And if we go back to Peter, 00:11:10.98\00:11:13.61 we notice in Chapter 4:14, 00:11:13.64\00:11:19.19 it says, "If you're insulted 00:11:19.22\00:11:22.63 for the name of Christ you are blessed, 00:11:22.66\00:11:24.79 because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you." 00:11:24.82\00:11:30.97 So just as Jesus had God's spirit resting upon Him, 00:11:31.00\00:11:35.57 when we go through these experiences of trial, 00:11:35.60\00:11:38.55 He promises to rest upon us and to help us up. 00:11:38.58\00:11:42.63 My wife and I had a challenging experience back in 1997. 00:11:42.66\00:11:49.60 We had major job change, major surgery, my father died, 00:11:49.63\00:11:56.52 major surgery for another member of the family, 00:11:56.55\00:11:58.78 my wife's grandmother died all within about six weeks time. 00:11:58.81\00:12:02.93 It was an incredibly challenging, 00:12:02.96\00:12:06.10 challenging experience for us to go through. 00:12:06.13\00:12:08.68 And you just wished for boring normal days, 00:12:08.71\00:12:16.51 that's what my prayer was, "O Lord, 00:12:16.54\00:12:17.91 just let 1998 be a boring year." 00:12:17.94\00:12:21.65 Everybody else's life around us 00:12:21.68\00:12:23.05 was just going on normally, you know. 00:12:23.08\00:12:25.15 And you could be tempted to think 00:12:25.18\00:12:28.14 that normal life was a mirage and that it didn't really exist. 00:12:28.17\00:12:35.70 But there were two things that helped us 00:12:35.73\00:12:37.23 particularly through this very difficult time. 00:12:37.26\00:12:39.59 I remember it quite well. 00:12:39.62\00:12:41.63 It was very precious friends at Union College, 00:12:41.66\00:12:44.48 just since from the days when we were at Union College, 00:12:44.51\00:12:47.31 very precious friends. 00:12:47.34\00:12:49.16 And then the promises of the Bible. 00:12:49.19\00:12:52.00 I remember going to class one day, 00:12:52.03\00:12:53.40 I didn't talked to students about this very much, 00:12:53.43\00:12:54.80 but there was a student 00:12:54.83\00:12:56.92 who'd been a student missionary in Siberia the year before. 00:12:56.95\00:13:00.53 Siberia and he'd the difficult experience. 00:13:00.56\00:13:04.19 And as I came in the class he was just there alone, 00:13:04.22\00:13:08.41 just before class began. 00:13:08.44\00:13:10.44 And for some reason I started talking about 00:13:10.47\00:13:14.24 how my wife and I were 00:13:14.27\00:13:15.94 looking for promises of the Bible. 00:13:15.97\00:13:18.22 We were writing them down in this time of turmoil for us. 00:13:18.25\00:13:22.02 And the student said to me, 00:13:22.05\00:13:24.26 "They're not hard to find, are they?" 00:13:24.29\00:13:27.76 And I said, "No, they are not." 00:13:27.79\00:13:30.41 And it was just special link that happened 00:13:30.44\00:13:32.06 between the two of us and we'd both realized 00:13:32.09\00:13:34.48 that we have been through some challenging experiences. 00:13:34.51\00:13:38.27 And the promises of the Bible 00:13:38.30\00:13:40.40 helped to support us through that time. 00:13:40.43\00:13:42.05 And it actually bonds you to other people around you, 00:13:42.08\00:13:45.51 when they have had that experience, 00:13:45.54\00:13:47.38 you have had that experience and you could share it together. 00:13:47.41\00:13:49.85 Well, we got some more things to talk about 1 Peter Chapter 4, 00:13:49.88\00:13:54.04 so we'll be back after a short break. 00:13:54.07\00:13:56.16
