Hello and welcom to "Books of the Book." 00:00:21.53\00:00:23.84 This is a very exciting moment for me and for Dr. Shepherd 00:00:23.87\00:00:26.35 for you to join us in this Bible study. 00:00:26.38\00:00:29.37 We're studying the books of 1 and 2 Peter. 00:00:29.40\00:00:32.52 And Dr. Shepherd comes from Andrew's University, 00:00:32.55\00:00:35.08 he is a professor at the Theological Institute 00:00:35.11\00:00:38.60 or Seminary at Andrew's University. 00:00:38.63\00:00:41.76 Dr. Shepherd, you have a doctorate in religion? 00:00:41.79\00:00:45.12 And also you have another doctorate 00:00:45.15\00:00:46.94 in public health, is that right? 00:00:46.97\00:00:49.04 Yes, correct. 00:00:49.07\00:00:50.44 Before I did my training in New Testament years before, 00:00:50.47\00:00:55.87 I was a student at the school of Public Health 00:00:55.90\00:00:58.83 at Loma Linda University, 00:00:58.86\00:01:01.05 got my masters at Public Health and Public Health Nutrition. 00:01:01.08\00:01:03.29 And at that time they called it a Doctor of Health Science, 00:01:03.32\00:01:06.18 later it was gone further into be renamed 00:01:06.21\00:01:10.10 Doctor of Public Health and Preventive Care. 00:01:10.13\00:01:12.49 Has that been of any help in your career? 00:01:12.52\00:01:14.62 Well, yes I-- when I was in Africa 00:01:14.65\00:01:16.96 and my wife and I were there as missionaries for 6 years 00:01:16.99\00:01:19.37 and I was ADRA's Health and Temperance Director 00:01:19.40\00:01:22.44 for the Malawi Union. 00:01:22.47\00:01:24.66 And, so, made use of my health training a lot then 00:01:24.69\00:01:27.78 and it's still you know, 00:01:27.81\00:01:29.20 it still comes in from time to time and understanding. 00:01:29.23\00:01:31.32 So it just takes in-- talking about health, 00:01:31.35\00:01:33.17 in fact we'll talk a little bit about that today 00:01:33.20\00:01:35.16 as we talk about 1 Peter. 00:01:35.19\00:01:36.56 And we're talking about why I go to church? 00:01:36.59\00:01:41.32 Yes. Why do we go to church? 00:01:41.35\00:01:42.72 Well, let's read the passage it's in 1 Peter 4:7-11. 00:01:42.75\00:01:47.57 And this is what it says, 1 Peter 4:7-11, 00:01:47.60\00:01:51.38 "The end of all things is at hand, 00:01:51.41\00:01:55.52 therefore, be self controlled and sober minded 00:01:55.55\00:01:58.26 for the sake of your prayers. 00:01:58.29\00:02:00.53 Above all, keep loving one another earnestly 00:02:00.56\00:02:04.44 since love covers a multitude of sins. 00:02:04.47\00:02:07.99 Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. 00:02:08.02\00:02:11.47 As each has received a gift, 00:02:11.50\00:02:13.70 use it to serve one another 00:02:13.73\00:02:15.16 as good stewards of God's varied grace. 00:02:15.19\00:02:18.70 Whoever speaks, is one who speaks oracles of God, 00:02:18.73\00:02:22.59 whoever serves is one who serves 00:02:22.62\00:02:24.75 by the strength that God supplies, 00:02:24.78\00:02:27.21 in order that in everything 00:02:27.24\00:02:28.80 God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, 00:02:28.83\00:02:31.57 to Him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen." 00:02:31.60\00:02:36.42 The end of all things is at hand, 00:02:36.45\00:02:39.86 and what does Peter mean by this, 00:02:39.89\00:02:41.77 the end of all things is at hand? 00:02:41.80\00:02:43.68 Well, you know, Peter wrote about 2,000 years ago, 00:02:43.71\00:02:47.21 so some people raise the question, 00:02:47.24\00:02:50.18 wait a minute, he said, 00:02:50.21\00:02:51.58 "the end of all things is at hand." 00:02:51.61\00:02:53.21 He must have been wrong because 2, 000 years 00:02:53.24\00:02:55.64 have gone by since that time. 00:02:55.67\00:02:57.98 Well, there's two things to help us 00:02:58.01\00:02:59.38 understand this little better. 00:02:59.41\00:03:01.08 First is what does he mean by the word, end. 00:03:01.11\00:03:05.32 The word is telos in Greek and that word means end 00:03:05.35\00:03:10.77 but it also means goal. 00:03:10.80\00:03:13.66 The same word is interestingly used in Romans 10:4 00:03:13.69\00:03:17.10 when Christ--he says, Christ is the end of law. 00:03:17.13\00:03:20.58 That's not that he is the termination of the law 00:03:20.61\00:03:23.18 but he is the goal of the law 00:03:23.21\00:03:24.99 to which the law is headed, okay. 00:03:25.02\00:03:27.87 So, in one sense, one of the commentators says that, 00:03:27.90\00:03:32.59 when he talks about the end is nearing, 00:03:32.62\00:03:34.26 he's talking about the end stage of God's redemptive plan. 00:03:34.29\00:03:38.55 You can think of this is happening 00:03:38.58\00:03:40.53 since the resurrection of Jesus Christ. 00:03:40.56\00:03:43.03 That as Christ resurrection is the affirmation 00:03:43.06\00:03:47.76 and the assurance of our resurrection 00:03:47.79\00:03:50.15 if we should die before our Lord returns. 00:03:50.18\00:03:52.68 So that resurrection of Jesus is an end time event. 00:03:52.71\00:03:57.17 It's a eschatological event 00:03:57.20\00:03:58.99 that has implications for the end of time. 00:03:59.02\00:04:01.84 But there's another thing we will study again 00:04:01.87\00:04:03.99 when we come to 2 Peter Chapter 3 00:04:04.02\00:04:06.97 where he talks about the second coming of Jesus. 00:04:07.00\00:04:08.51 But I brought a little illustration with me 00:04:08.54\00:04:10.51 and I'll just hold up here, 00:04:10.54\00:04:11.91 you can probably see this is a ruler 00:04:11.94\00:04:14.00 maybe if I hold it down next to--yeah, 00:04:14.03\00:04:16.82 maybe that's little better, you can see my ruler. 00:04:16.85\00:04:19.47 And this ruler is a foot long, okay. 00:04:19.50\00:04:23.91 And as you look at that you can see just how long it is. 00:04:23.94\00:04:27.19 Now, if I'm to turn, 00:04:27.22\00:04:28.59 if I take and turn this ruler on edge like this, 00:04:28.62\00:04:32.67 it looks a whole lot shorter, doesn't it? 00:04:32.70\00:04:34.82 It does. 00:04:34.85\00:04:36.22 It seems like an optical illusion. 00:04:36.25\00:04:38.38 Maybe just a couple inches or something long 00:04:38.41\00:04:41.33 instead of being actually a foot long, okay. 00:04:41.36\00:04:45.52 Over in 2 Peter Chapter 3, we are told that 00:04:45.55\00:04:49.49 for the Lord a thousand years is as one day, all right. 00:04:49.52\00:04:55.60 In God's perspective how long it's been 00:04:55.63\00:04:57.35 since Christ died and rose again? 00:04:57.38\00:05:01.84 Two days. Okay. 00:05:01.87\00:05:03.24 Two days. 2000 years-- 00:05:03.27\00:05:04.67 That was a true question there. 00:05:04.70\00:05:06.07 Hasn't been very long at all just a very short time. 00:05:06.10\00:05:09.03 So the end of all things is near. 00:05:09.06\00:05:11.70 Now, some people might not be satisfied with that so much. 00:05:11.73\00:05:14.92 But think in terms of Christ resurrection 00:05:14.95\00:05:16.90 as assuring our resurrection as beginning, 00:05:16.93\00:05:19.68 you could say the end days 00:05:19.71\00:05:21.08 or being a marker of the end of days. 00:05:21.11\00:05:24.08 And in God's perspective it's only short time till He returns. 00:05:24.11\00:05:28.54 Of course we have to talk more about this 00:05:28.57\00:05:30.52 and we'll talk about that when we talk about 2 Peter Chapter 3. 00:05:30.55\00:05:33.14 But now we're talking about 1 Peter Chapter 4. 00:05:33.17\00:05:36.52 So, what can man's flow from the nearness of the end? 00:05:36.55\00:05:40.55 Okay, he says, the end of all things is at hand, therefore. 00:05:40.58\00:05:44.87 Then he says, two things be self controlled and sober minded 00:05:44.90\00:05:49.95 for the sake of your prayers. 00:05:49.98\00:05:51.50 All right, these two words, 00:05:51.53\00:05:53.66 the first one means to be of sound mind, 00:05:53.69\00:05:56.06 to be in your right mind, to be reasonable, 00:05:56.09\00:05:59.11 to be sensible, to be serious, okay. 00:05:59.14\00:06:01.52 So just as we've already seen 00:06:01.55\00:06:03.91 Peter making emphasis on staying awake 00:06:03.94\00:06:06.58 and being active in your perspective 00:06:06.61\00:06:09.29 as you look at things. 00:06:09.32\00:06:10.69 So here he tells us to have a sound mind 00:06:10.72\00:06:14.16 to have our senses awake. 00:06:14.19\00:06:16.63 You remember how we talked about 00:06:16.66\00:06:18.03 girding up the lions of the mind, 00:06:18.06\00:06:19.43 being ready for action. 00:06:19.46\00:06:20.96 And sure enough he repeats the word that he used before, 00:06:20.99\00:06:25.01 he says that you should be sober. 00:06:25.04\00:06:27.45 Be well balanced, be self controlled. 00:06:27.48\00:06:30.10 Now that word actually means to abstain 00:06:30.13\00:06:34.02 from wine and interestingly Peter uses this word, 00:06:34.05\00:06:37.75 this word three times in Chapter 1 verse 13, 00:06:37.78\00:06:41.61 Chapter 4 verse 7 and again in Chapter 5 verse 8. 00:06:41.64\00:06:45.71 In each of these places he combines the term 00:06:45.74\00:06:48.57 with words of thoughtful wakefulness being, 00:06:48.60\00:06:52.69 you know, being awake and not going to sleep. 00:06:52.72\00:06:54.71 So these are quite focused on clarity of thought 00:06:54.74\00:06:58.98 and on life outlook how you think of things. 00:06:59.01\00:07:02.72 I mentioned before and I'll mention here again 00:07:02.75\00:07:05.31 the idea of what we call eschatological temperance. 00:07:05.34\00:07:09.69 I'm thankful that my church teaches 00:07:09.72\00:07:11.38 that we should stay away from alcohol. 00:07:11.41\00:07:13.78 It's a poison from the top of your head 00:07:13.81\00:07:15.59 to the tip of your toes. 00:07:15.62\00:07:17.45 And it's just not a good thing to make use of it all. 00:07:17.48\00:07:20.26 In fact, alcohol, so I'll now take off my religion hat 00:07:20.29\00:07:23.52 and put on my public health hat here little bit. 00:07:23.55\00:07:26.61 Alcohol kills 100,000 people in the United States every year. 00:07:26.64\00:07:30.83 Tobacco kills 400,000 people in the United States every year. 00:07:30.86\00:07:34.92 500,000 people die in this country every year 00:07:34.95\00:07:39.76 because of these two plagues. 00:07:39.79\00:07:41.81 If there were some red dye number 5 00:07:41.84\00:07:45.18 or some additive to some food 00:07:45.21\00:07:47.24 that was killing so many people 00:07:47.27\00:07:48.85 he would been out lot long, long, long ago. 00:07:48.88\00:07:52.47 The Adventist health message 00:07:52.50\00:07:53.87 is such been a wonderful blessing in my life. 00:07:53.90\00:07:57.23 I just like to mention very briefly 00:07:57.26\00:07:59.65 the something that Ellen White says 00:07:59.68\00:08:01.98 that just lays out for us a very simple and beautiful lifestyle. 00:08:02.01\00:08:06.50 She calls it the eight natural remedies. 00:08:06.53\00:08:09.30 They are easy to remember if you think of them in groups, 00:08:09.33\00:08:12.91 fresh air, sunlight and water. 00:08:12.94\00:08:15.80 Those three just kind of, 00:08:15.83\00:08:17.20 I don't know they seem to hang together, 00:08:17.23\00:08:18.72 fresh air, being out in fresh air, 00:08:18.75\00:08:20.67 getting enough sunlight and drinking lots of water. 00:08:20.70\00:08:24.04 I actually recommend that people drink 00:08:24.07\00:08:26.67 a minimal of 10 cups a water, 8 ounce cups of water everyday. 00:08:26.70\00:08:29.82 And it's actually better I think if you drink more 00:08:29.85\00:08:32.11 unless you have kidney failure 00:08:32.14\00:08:33.51 but for most of us you know, 00:08:33.54\00:08:35.03 that's a good amount of water to have 00:08:35.06\00:08:37.44 10, 15 cups of water everyday. 00:08:37.47\00:08:40.00 And so far these remedies apparently are not very costly. 00:08:40.03\00:08:43.25 They are not costly, you know, fresh air free, sunlight free, 00:08:43.28\00:08:46.50 water you know, that not costly at all. 00:08:46.53\00:08:49.08 Then we have rest and exercise, they seem to go together 00:08:49.11\00:08:54.17 because one is the opposite of the other, 00:08:54.20\00:08:55.99 rest and exercise, okay. 00:08:56.02\00:08:58.14 And rest, scientists have found that most people will do best 00:08:58.17\00:09:04.18 if they get 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night. 00:09:04.21\00:09:08.65 This means going to bed early enough, 00:09:08.68\00:09:11.29 turning off the television set even if it's 3ABN, oops sorry. 00:09:11.32\00:09:15.97 But getting to bed at an early enough hour, 00:09:16.00\00:09:18.81 so that you can have a good night sleep. 00:09:18.84\00:09:20.83 The real secret of getting enough sleep 00:09:20.86\00:09:23.38 is going to bed early. 00:09:23.41\00:09:24.89 Most people go to bed way too late, 00:09:24.92\00:09:26.78 you know, 10, 11, 12 o' clock at night. 00:09:26.81\00:09:28.89 Would be much better 00:09:28.92\00:09:30.29 if we're going to bed at 9, 9:30 at night. 00:09:30.32\00:09:32.64 You get more restful sleep 00:09:32.67\00:09:34.43 and you need like 7 hours of sleep. 00:09:34.46\00:09:36.87 And then exercise, exercise everyday. 00:09:36.90\00:09:41.46 I used to do long distance running, now I do walking. 00:09:41.49\00:09:44.65 And I walk everyday, I don't miss a day. 00:09:44.68\00:09:47.37 And so walking is exercise also? I tell--oh, absolutely. 00:09:47.40\00:09:50.96 I tell people that they need to talk 00:09:50.99\00:09:52.43 to their two doctors everyday, 00:09:52.46\00:09:54.24 their right leg and their left leg, 00:09:54.27\00:09:56.20 the two doctors. 00:09:56.23\00:09:57.75 And, actually when it comes to exercise 00:09:57.78\00:10:01.22 scientists have found that the people 00:10:01.25\00:10:02.95 who are most likely to continue in an exercise program 00:10:02.98\00:10:06.82 are those who do it first thing in the morning, 00:10:06.85\00:10:10.29 first thing in the morning that's the best time 00:10:10.32\00:10:13.19 for doing exercise because nothing else is going on, 00:10:13.22\00:10:15.53 so if you go to bed early enough, 00:10:15.56\00:10:16.93 you can get up early enough, 00:10:16.96\00:10:18.33 you can go for a walk, you can go swimming. 00:10:18.36\00:10:19.73 People will ask, well, what's the best exercise?
