And we're back with "Books of the Book." 00:00:01.40\00:00:03.01 Dr. Shepherd, so how does the world react 00:00:03.04\00:00:06.08 when someone decides to follow Jesus? 00:00:06.11\00:00:10.09 You know, every Christian can think of this 00:00:10.12\00:00:12.38 in their own personal experience of becoming a Christian. 00:00:12.41\00:00:16.06 And usually the reaction is not positive. 00:00:16.09\00:00:19.84 Because the truth shines in the darkness 00:00:19.87\00:00:23.97 and as Jesus said in John 3, 00:00:24.00\00:00:26.44 "Men love the darkness rather than the light." 00:00:26.47\00:00:29.59 So they don't come to the light. 00:00:29.62\00:00:31.30 But that's exactly what Peter says here in verse 4. 00:00:31.33\00:00:34.53 We find their reaction and so we just read it again 00:00:34.56\00:00:39.80 verse 4, "With respect to this, 00:00:39.83\00:00:42.70 they are surprised when you do not join them 00:00:42.73\00:00:45.62 in the same flood of debauchery and they malign you." 00:00:45.65\00:00:49.92 Okay, so the first reaction of the world 00:00:49.95\00:00:53.42 to Christian faith is surprise. 00:00:53.45\00:00:56.81 That's interesting. 00:00:56.84\00:00:58.46 You know, my verse uses the word 'strange,' 00:00:58.49\00:01:00.94 so they think it's strange for-- 00:01:00.97\00:01:04.31 Then for you to take that route. 00:01:04.34\00:01:06.91 Yes, it's strange, it's surprise, 00:01:06.94\00:01:10.38 it's something foreign to them. 00:01:10.41\00:01:12.12 It doesn't fit with their way of life 00:01:12.15\00:01:15.03 and they expect things to go in a certain way 00:01:15.06\00:01:18.72 and when they don't, you know, how can you do that? 00:01:18.75\00:01:23.40 Now, you know, what they are involved in 00:01:23.43\00:01:26.94 is all the things that were the vice list, 00:01:26.97\00:01:29.02 we call it a vice list, listed in verse 3. 00:01:29.05\00:01:32.74 "They living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, 00:01:32.77\00:01:37.93 orgies, drinking parties, lawless idolatry." 00:01:37.96\00:01:42.37 This is typical kind of list of what 00:01:42.40\00:01:45.90 the Pagans were all about in their festivals 00:01:45.93\00:01:49.41 and in their lifestyle and you might think today that, 00:01:49.44\00:01:54.18 I mean, while we don't have people bowing down to idols, 00:01:54.21\00:01:58.55 there's still a plenty of idols in the land. 00:01:58.58\00:02:00.99 And you think, "Well, why are these people upset? 00:02:01.02\00:02:04.48 I mean, they're just going to their parties 00:02:04.51\00:02:05.88 and why should it bother them? 00:02:05.91\00:02:08.62 There are there old friends who, you know, 00:02:08.65\00:02:10.16 used to go with them, don't go with them anymore. 00:02:10.19\00:02:13.88 What's the big deal? Why should that be a problem?" 00:02:13.91\00:02:18.26 Well, there's a certain what shall we say, 00:02:18.29\00:02:23.34 a conscience speaking to them or this is out of step 00:02:23.37\00:02:26.65 and they feel that tension that it doesn't fit together anymore. 00:02:26.68\00:02:32.61 And sometimes we say they protest too much. 00:02:32.64\00:02:37.42 They protested too much. 00:02:37.45\00:02:38.82 You know, the words I think of Shakespeare 00:02:38.85\00:02:41.23 or some famous author that when you're going 00:02:41.26\00:02:44.26 in a different way and then they say why don't go with us? 00:02:44.29\00:02:48.09 They want to force you to be like them because 00:02:48.12\00:02:50.17 the voice of conscience speaks to their hearts too. 00:02:50.20\00:02:53.93 So the light shines on them and they don't like it. 00:02:53.96\00:02:56.36 So what do they do? 00:02:56.39\00:02:57.86 They're not just surprised, now they persecute you. 00:02:57.89\00:03:04.05 They speak evil of you, okay? 00:03:04.08\00:03:06.02 Now how will all of this be resolved? 00:03:06.05\00:03:08.41 Uh, well, that's what verses 5 and 6 teach us. 00:03:08.44\00:03:11.49 So we need to read those again because 00:03:11.52\00:03:13.33 they give us the answer about how everything will be resolved. 00:03:13.36\00:03:16.49 "They will give an account to him 00:03:16.52\00:03:18.22 who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 00:03:18.25\00:03:21.20 For this reason, the gospel was preached 00:03:21.23\00:03:23.52 also to those who are dead 00:03:23.55\00:03:25.93 that they might be judged according to men in the flesh 00:03:25.96\00:03:28.83 but live according to God in the spirit." 00:03:28.86\00:03:33.43 Now this is one of those difficult, 00:03:33.46\00:03:36.51 another one of those difficult passages to--Comprehend. 00:03:36.54\00:03:39.19 And this is one of those passages 00:03:39.22\00:03:41.14 that people like to call "a problem text." 00:03:41.17\00:03:43.52 Now we already said, no, there are no problem texts. 00:03:43.55\00:03:47.46 Is it describing may be another second chance to be saved? 00:03:47.49\00:03:51.56 Yeah, well, we'll have to kind 00:03:51.59\00:03:53.33 of arrive there to get that list. 00:03:53.36\00:03:55.31 Let's put it all within its context. 00:03:55.34\00:03:56.87 That's the best way. 00:03:56.90\00:03:58.27 Whenever you're reading a passage of scripture 00:03:58.30\00:04:00.05 and you come across something that is-- 00:04:00.08\00:04:02.03 Just strikes you. 00:04:02.06\00:04:03.78 "Oh, I don't understand this. This is crazy, how can that be?" 00:04:03.81\00:04:07.13 The first thing to do is to read the verses around it. 00:04:07.16\00:04:10.39 The context we call it to place those words in their setting. 00:04:10.42\00:04:15.66 And if you look at them very carefully 00:04:15.69\00:04:17.53 sometimes you start to see, 00:04:17.56\00:04:18.93 oh, there's certainly linkages here. 00:04:18.96\00:04:20.58 There's certain words that are similar here 00:04:20.61\00:04:23.36 and it helps you to start to understand it. 00:04:23.39\00:04:26.21 This is why we have good commentaries they help to, 00:04:26.24\00:04:29.74 you know, fill things out. 00:04:29.77\00:04:31.14 We're working to produce 00:04:31.17\00:04:33.81 a new Seventh-day Adventist Bible commentary. 00:04:33.84\00:04:35.58 It's a very exciting project that's in process now. 00:04:35.61\00:04:38.28 And hope that it will become a great reality 00:04:38.31\00:04:41.85 and a great blessing to God's people. 00:04:41.88\00:04:43.60 So we notice here in verse 4, 00:04:43.63\00:04:46.83 "That they are surprised and they malign you." 00:04:46.86\00:04:49.52 So then Peter says in verse 5, "But." 00:04:49.55\00:04:53.88 So this is going to be a contrast of verse 4. 00:04:53.91\00:04:56.86 So here we had "The Christians had left off 00:04:56.89\00:05:00.95 doing what was wrong. 00:05:00.98\00:05:02.55 The gentiles were going to these drinking parties, 00:05:02.58\00:05:05.59 and idolatry and everything. 00:05:05.62\00:05:07.53 They were surprised a Christian student do that 00:05:07.56\00:05:10.44 and so they come and they persecute them." 00:05:10.47\00:05:13.62 "But," but means that there's gonna be some change. 00:05:13.65\00:05:18.24 But they, who's they? The ones just mentioned. 00:05:18.27\00:05:22.07 The Pagans. Yeah, okay. 00:05:22.10\00:05:23.83 But they will give account to him 00:05:23.86\00:05:27.48 who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 00:05:27.51\00:05:29.77 Who's that? God. 00:05:29.80\00:05:33.87 And this is, you know, linked in with all of the teaching 00:05:33.90\00:05:38.72 of the message of judgment that the Book of First Peter 00:05:38.75\00:05:43.25 has lots of comments about judgment actually. 00:05:43.28\00:05:46.08 And we find here that he says, 00:05:46.11\00:05:48.35 they will give an account to him. 00:05:48.38\00:05:51.30 They have to answer to God 00:05:51.33\00:05:53.36 who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 00:05:53.39\00:05:57.01 Now we need to think about this living. 00:05:57.04\00:06:00.15 He says "the living and the dead." 00:06:00.18\00:06:01.63 Who is he talking about? He is talking about people. 00:06:01.66\00:06:05.41 Yes, and now our question is, which people? 00:06:05.44\00:06:09.81 Well, the living and the dead. 00:06:09.84\00:06:11.45 The living and the dead. Very simple. 00:06:11.48\00:06:12.85 Now how many people does that include? 00:06:12.88\00:06:16.25 All of the ones that have ever lived. 00:06:16.28\00:06:18.52 And all of the ones that are currently living. 00:06:18.55\00:06:21.08 Yeah, so this is all of humanity. 00:06:21.11\00:06:24.61 So this phrase, "The living and the dead," 00:06:24.64\00:06:27.09 there's a really cool word. 00:06:27.12\00:06:29.86 The word is merism. 00:06:29.89\00:06:31.68 Merism means the totality that it covers all of the groups 00:06:31.71\00:06:36.02 the two, the living and the dead, 00:06:36.05\00:06:38.24 is a way of talking about all of humanity. 00:06:38.27\00:06:43.08 This is a very important point though 00:06:43.11\00:06:44.95 because in verse 6 he goes on, "For..." 00:06:44.98\00:06:50.51 So now this is going to be support for verse 5. 00:06:50.54\00:06:54.18 "For this is why the gospel was preached 00:06:54.21\00:06:56.68 even to those who are dead. 00:06:56.71\00:06:58.55 That though judged in the flesh they may the way people are 00:06:58.58\00:07:01.76 they might live in the spirit the way God does." 00:07:01.79\00:07:05.18 Okay? So the question is who are the dead in verse 6? 00:07:05.21\00:07:11.27 Who does this refer to? Got any ideas. 00:07:11.30\00:07:15.79 Who are the dead he's talking about? 00:07:15.82\00:07:17.52 The wicked dead? The wicked dead? Okay. 00:07:17.55\00:07:22.67 Well, if it's the wicked dead then perhaps they have 00:07:22.70\00:07:27.77 a second chance at salvation because "For this reason 00:07:27.80\00:07:32.30 this is why the gospel was preached even to the dead." 00:07:32.33\00:07:34.40 And somebody says, "Uh, wait a minute. 00:07:34.43\00:07:36.65 I remember back in Chapter 3, verse 19, 00:07:36.68\00:07:40.39 didn't he go to preach to the spirits in prison? 00:07:40.42\00:07:42.92 That must be what this verse is talking about?" 00:07:42.95\00:07:46.77 And the answer is no. 00:07:46.80\00:07:49.58 That is not what this verse is talking about. 00:07:49.61\00:07:51.74 Somebody says, "Well, wait a minute. 00:07:51.77\00:07:54.02 You've got to prove that to me. 00:07:54.05\00:07:55.79 You've got to show me that because I thought that sounded 00:07:55.82\00:07:58.74 like a really good connection back at verse 19 of Chapter 3. 00:07:58.77\00:08:02.35 And in fact that's where some people get this idea 00:08:02.38\00:08:04.77 that Christ goes to those in hell 00:08:04.80\00:08:06.55 and He preaches to them. 00:08:06.58\00:08:07.95 They have a second chance at salvation. 00:08:07.98\00:08:09.83 Okay, first we have to notice 00:08:09.86\00:08:12.40 that there is a very intimate tie 00:08:12.43\00:08:13.94 between verse 5 and verse 6. 00:08:13.97\00:08:16.77 When he says 4 in verse 6, he's using verse 6 00:08:16.80\00:08:20.06 as a support for his statement in verse 5. 00:08:20.09\00:08:23.05 Okay, that's the first step. 00:08:23.08\00:08:24.60 Second, we notice that in verse 5, 00:08:24.63\00:08:28.03 he used the word 'dead' 00:08:28.06\00:08:30.36 and in verse 6, he used the word 'dead.' 00:08:30.39\00:08:34.69 Okay, so if he uses the word 'dead ' in verse 5, 00:08:34.72\00:08:41.21 and there's like a logical connection 00:08:41.24\00:08:44.14 between the 2 verses. 00:08:44.17\00:08:46.16 It would be very strange if he changed 00:08:46.19\00:08:48.61 the meaning of the word 'dead' in verse 6. 00:08:48.64\00:08:52.77 All right, so the dead in verse 5 00:08:52.80\00:08:55.15 are people who are dead, all right? 00:08:55.18\00:08:57.84 So the people in verse 6 who're dead 00:08:57.87\00:09:00.35 must be people who are dead. 00:09:00.38\00:09:02.07 They're not alive. All right. 00:09:02.10\00:09:03.82 So far so good, all right? 00:09:03.85\00:09:05.99 Third, this seems to suggest 00:09:06.02\00:09:11.46 if you take that the dead in verse 6 00:09:11.49\00:09:17.77 are the same as the dead in verse 5 00:09:17.80\00:09:19.64 and yet they're preached to, it almost makes you think 00:09:19.67\00:09:21.62 that the dead in verse 6 are somehow conscious 00:09:21.65\00:09:27.42 because they were evangelized, weren't they? 00:09:27.45\00:09:30.62 Okay. But we notice it says they were evangelized. 00:09:30.65\00:09:35.53 It doesn't say they are being evangelized, 00:09:35.56\00:09:38.83 they were evangelized. 00:09:38.86\00:09:40.95 And so we wonder, well, just when did that happen, okay? 00:09:40.98\00:09:46.70 Now at this point we take a little pause 00:09:46.73\00:09:48.87 from this statement and we think about 00:09:48.90\00:09:50.72 Peter's whole concept of judgment, all right? 00:09:50.75\00:09:53.97 And Peter is teaching about judgment, 00:09:54.00\00:09:58.09 there is no second chance. 00:09:58.12\00:10:00.31 If you read the verses in Chapter 1 verse 17, 00:10:00.34\00:10:04.06 God judges everyone without partiality 00:10:04.09\00:10:08.22 according to their deeds what they've done in this life. 00:10:08.25\00:10:11.24 In Chapter 2, verse 23, Christ entrusted Himself 00:10:11.27\00:10:14.88 to the one who judges justly. 00:10:14.91\00:10:17.95 And in Chapter 4 verse 5 the gentiles must give 00:10:17.98\00:10:21.18 an account to God in the judgment, all right? 00:10:21.21\00:10:23.88 In 4:17 which come after our passage, 00:10:23.91\00:10:27.48 judgment begins with the household of God 00:10:27.51\00:10:29.41 and proceeds to those who do not believe the gospel. 00:10:29.44\00:10:32.18 In every one of these other parts 00:10:32.21\00:10:34.85 of the Book of First Peter, judgment does not have 00:10:34.88\00:10:38.22 the concept that, "Oh, that, you know, 00:10:38.25\00:10:40.91 there's gonna be a second chance for you. 00:10:40.94\00:10:42.62 If you die, you know, 00:10:42.65\00:10:44.02 you don't have to believe in the gospel now. 00:10:44.05\00:10:46.28 You can wait till then and there will be another chance for you." 00:10:46.31\00:10:49.49 That whole kind of perspective 00:10:49.52\00:10:51.61 emasculates the concept of judgment in 1 Peter. 00:10:51.64\00:10:55.92 It goes completely contrary to the idea of judgment. 00:10:55.95\00:10:58.81 There is no second chance. 00:10:58.84\00:11:00.85 You face judgment and that is what 00:11:00.88\00:11:03.61 should call you back to God now, all right? 00:11:03.64\00:11:06.94 So if verse 6 is going a different way oh, my, 00:11:06.97\00:11:10.80 it's going against the whole rest of the book. 00:11:10.83\00:11:13.71 It doesn't seem that that's actually 00:11:13.74\00:11:15.50 the case of what's happening. 00:11:15.53\00:11:17.67 This leads us to the conclusion that in 4:6, 00:11:17.70\00:11:22.20 Peter is talking about the people who are now dead, 00:11:22.23\00:11:26.63 who are now dead. 00:11:26.66\00:11:28.24 And when were they evangelized? 00:11:28.27\00:11:30.46 They were evangelized earlier. When they were living. 00:11:30.49\00:11:33.47 When they were living, before they died, okay? 00:11:33.50\00:11:37.25 You see but why does He say that way. 00:11:37.28\00:11:40.90 Because remember, He is arguing 00:11:40.93\00:11:43.18 about the Christians facing gentile persecution. 00:11:43.21\00:11:47.28 And so he says in verse 6, "This is why 00:11:47.31\00:11:50.35 the gospel was preached even to those who are dead." 00:11:50.38\00:11:54.41 You see they became Christians. And so then what happened. 00:11:54.44\00:11:59.12 "That though judged in the flesh the way people are," 00:11:59.15\00:12:02.04 that is they're judged by their surrounding culture, 00:12:02.07\00:12:04.80 the Pagans who are persecuting them are putting them down. 00:12:04.83\00:12:08.47 "Though judged in the flesh by people that they might live 00:12:08.50\00:12:11.47 in the spirit in accordance with God," 00:12:11.50\00:12:14.89 or in the way God does. 00:12:14.92\00:12:16.29 So God is affirming them when He will judge the world. 00:12:16.32\00:12:21.59 So as the wicked now are up and the righteous are down, 00:12:21.62\00:12:28.58 what's going to happen in the judgment 00:12:28.61\00:12:30.08 is the tables will be turned and the righteous will go down 00:12:30.11\00:12:34.04 and the wicked will be affirmed by God. 00:12:34.07\00:12:37.32 This makes total sense of the passage then 00:12:37.35\00:12:39.97 of who these dead were. 00:12:40.00\00:12:41.37 These were the dead Christians. And they are being affirmed. 00:12:41.40\00:12:45.49 God is bringing the whole world to account. 00:12:45.52\00:12:47.66 And He's going to affirm His people. 00:12:47.69\00:12:49.40 It reminds us of Daniel 7 00:12:49.43\00:12:51.45 where the beasts are persecuting God's people. 00:12:51.48\00:12:53.66 What does God do in the judgment? 00:12:53.69\00:12:55.46 He comes to the aid of His people. 00:12:55.49\00:12:57.75 He comes and saves them and gives the kingdom to them 00:12:57.78\00:13:00.94 because they've been faithful to Him. 00:13:00.97\00:13:02.77 And that's exactly the case of these people here. 00:13:02.80\00:13:04.70 So there's a no linkage between Chapter 4:6 and Chapter 3:19. 00:13:04.73\00:13:10.60 Those two are separate ideas. All right. 00:13:10.63\00:13:13.62 Dr. Shepherd, I want to thank you again 00:13:13.65\00:13:15.07 for joining us in this program of "Books of the Book." 00:13:15.10\00:13:18.45 And we also want to thank our viewers, 00:13:18.48\00:13:20.32 our listening audience for being with us 00:13:20.35\00:13:22.37 studying these very important books in the Bible. 00:13:22.40\00:13:25.64 And I also encourage you ask the Holy Spirit 00:13:25.67\00:13:28.43 as you open the Bible, as you begin to read it. 00:13:28.46\00:13:32.44 Ask God to allow you to hear the voice of God. 00:13:32.47\00:13:36.50 Perhaps, there's something that He wants to talk to you as well. 00:13:36.53\00:13:40.43 Well, God bless you till next time. 00:13:40.46\00:13:42.52
