Hello and welcome to "Books of the Book." 00:00:22.26\00:00:24.62 I'm Deyvy Rodriguez and I'm glad 00:00:24.65\00:00:26.27 you're able to join us in our study today. 00:00:26.30\00:00:28.58 We're studying the books of 1st and 2nd Peter. 00:00:28.61\00:00:31.65 Dr. Tom Shepherd is with us. 00:00:31.68\00:00:33.38 He is a Professor of New Testament Interpretation 00:00:33.41\00:00:35.78 at the Theological Seminary of Andrews University. 00:00:35.81\00:00:39.29 Dr. Shepherd, welcome. Thank you. 00:00:39.32\00:00:41.08 You know, when I became a Christian 00:00:41.11\00:00:43.03 there were many things I had to leave behind 00:00:43.06\00:00:45.21 and some of them were friends. 00:00:45.24\00:00:46.91 And actually they left me behind 00:00:46.94\00:00:48.90 because they just simply didn't like my new lifestyle 00:00:48.93\00:00:52.49 and so some of them decided to just go their own way. 00:00:52.52\00:00:56.14 And at some point they just didn't like me anymore. 00:00:56.17\00:00:59.41 I don't know if you'd an experience that way or-- 00:00:59.44\00:01:01.77 Well in my life I was raised up as-- 00:01:01.80\00:01:05.28 in a church going family, Adventist family. 00:01:05.31\00:01:08.18 And so my group of friends 00:01:08.21\00:01:10.09 were friends that were already in the church. 00:01:10.12\00:01:11.70 So I didn't have that shift take place. 00:01:11.73\00:01:13.89 But I know many people do. 00:01:13.92\00:01:15.69 And it's quite startling to them sometimes, 00:01:15.72\00:01:18.80 especially if there old friends give them a hard time. 00:01:18.83\00:01:23.28 And that's really what our passage here is talking about. 00:01:23.31\00:01:25.88 So we jump right into it. Let's read 1st Peter 4:1-6. 00:01:25.91\00:01:30.87 "Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, 00:01:30.90\00:01:33.88 arm yourselves also with the same mind, 00:01:33.91\00:01:36.27 for He who has suffered in the flesh 00:01:36.30\00:01:38.20 has ceased from sin, that He no longer should live 00:01:38.23\00:01:41.69 the rest of His time in the flesh 00:01:41.72\00:01:43.68 for the lusts of men, but for the will of God. 00:01:43.71\00:01:46.80 For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing 00:01:46.83\00:01:51.04 the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lewdness, 00:01:51.07\00:01:55.08 lusts, drunkenness, revelries, 00:01:55.11\00:01:58.45 drinking parties, and abominable idolatries. 00:01:58.48\00:02:02.81 In regard to these, they think it strange that 00:02:02.84\00:02:06.45 you do not run with them in the same flood 00:02:06.48\00:02:09.45 of dissipation, speaking evil of you. 00:02:09.48\00:02:13.06 They will give an account to Him 00:02:13.09\00:02:14.75 who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 00:02:14.78\00:02:17.55 For this reason the gospel was preached 00:02:17.58\00:02:20.16 also to those who are dead, 00:02:20.19\00:02:23.27 that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, 00:02:23.30\00:02:26.74 but live according to God in the spirit." 00:02:26.77\00:02:30.33 So how does this, what we've just read fit, 00:02:30.36\00:02:33.81 with what we've read before? All right. 00:02:33.84\00:02:36.66 Now that's a great question, too. 00:02:36.69\00:02:38.06 Because in a way it kind of builds on what's gone before. 00:02:38.09\00:02:41.96 We saw in our previous 2 times together 00:02:41.99\00:02:45.73 that 1st Peter 3:13-22 are a description 00:02:45.76\00:02:52.16 first of the Christian experience 00:02:52.19\00:02:54.67 of sharing faith and being persecuted for it, 00:02:54.70\00:02:58.44 followed by a support from the experience of Jesus 00:02:58.47\00:03:03.63 where He suffered as well, 00:03:03.66\00:03:06.40 where He died to bring us to God, 00:03:06.43\00:03:09.55 that He was raised to life in the spirit 00:03:09.58\00:03:12.06 and that He proclaimed victory 00:03:12.09\00:03:14.61 and ascended to the throne on high. 00:03:14.64\00:03:17.34 So we have that wonderful victory to look forward to. 00:03:17.37\00:03:22.34 He begins chapter 4 then by saying, 00:03:22.37\00:03:24.87 "Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh." 00:03:24.90\00:03:29.95 This concept of since Christ suffered in the flesh 00:03:29.98\00:03:34.32 is like a summary of all that he said in those verses 00:03:34.35\00:03:39.05 about Christ's experience in verses 18 to 22. 00:03:39.08\00:03:44.46 But then that's, of course, not where he stops. 00:03:44.49\00:03:48.32 He goes on. 00:03:48.35\00:03:51.66 And what does Peter mean in verse 1 when he says that 00:03:51.69\00:03:53.73 "we should arm ourselves with that same thought?" 00:03:53.76\00:03:57.23 Yeah, he now talks about a mindset or a way of thinking. 00:03:57.26\00:04:04.16 We've seen Peter talk a lot about, you know, 00:04:04.19\00:04:07.99 things that go on in the mind 00:04:08.02\00:04:10.25 because these Christians in this setting of Asia Minor 00:04:10.28\00:04:15.04 in the 1st century were many of them 00:04:15.07\00:04:19.30 by themselves, you know, away from other Christians. 00:04:19.33\00:04:22.63 And they needed to be fortified in their minds 00:04:22.66\00:04:26.24 in order to face the experience around them. 00:04:26.27\00:04:28.27 So we aren't exactly told. 00:04:28.30\00:04:32.36 We are said to arm ourselves with that same thought 00:04:32.39\00:04:36.19 but we aren't told exactly what that thought was 00:04:36.22\00:04:38.73 because in verses 18 to 22 what we're told is actions 00:04:38.76\00:04:43.77 that Jesus went through. 00:04:43.80\00:04:45.51 If we want to think back to any thoughts of Jesus 00:04:45.54\00:04:51.10 we have to reach all the way back to chapter 2, verse 23. 00:04:51.13\00:04:54.48 So maybe we should read 2:23 00:04:54.51\00:04:56.39 'cause it's probably a good parallel to this. 00:04:56.42\00:05:00.29 "Who when He was reviled did not revile in return, 00:05:00.32\00:05:03.92 when He suffered He did not threatened 00:05:03.95\00:05:06.68 but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously." 00:05:06.71\00:05:10.80 All right, remember when we talked about this 00:05:10.83\00:05:12.70 we said that in that experience 00:05:12.73\00:05:14.62 Jesus handed Himself over to God. 00:05:14.65\00:05:18.01 This is in the Garden of Gethsemane where He said 00:05:18.04\00:05:21.06 "Not My will be done but Your will be done." 00:05:21.09\00:05:26.73 And so He delivered Himself to God. 00:05:26.76\00:05:29.35 He handed Himself over to God. 00:05:29.38\00:05:30.86 That same kind of concept of Christ 00:05:30.89\00:05:33.26 submitting Himself to God, 00:05:33.29\00:05:34.91 of being willing to go to the cross, 00:05:34.94\00:05:37.25 of being faithful to God in a trying an experience, 00:05:37.28\00:05:41.62 that's probably the idea 00:05:41.65\00:05:43.57 that we are to arm ourselves with in this experience. 00:05:43.60\00:05:46.95 Now it's interesting that verses 18 to 22 of chapter 3 00:05:46.98\00:05:51.51 are kind of pivotal because they form the support 00:05:51.54\00:05:56.91 for verses 13 and 17 which come before them. 00:05:56.94\00:06:01.11 But now they are the premise for verses 4--chapter 4:1-6. 00:06:01.14\00:06:08.35 So they supported what goes before 00:06:08.38\00:06:10.77 but they become the basis 00:06:10.80\00:06:13.39 for his argumentation in verses 1 to 6 of chapter 4. 00:06:13.42\00:06:16.55 So it's kind of a pivotal kind of a pattern there in 3:18-22. 00:06:16.58\00:06:21.43 Very interesting, very important passage, 00:06:21.46\00:06:24.61 challenging, takes a lot of study to really get into. 00:06:24.64\00:06:27.34 We really just kind of touched on things there. 00:06:27.37\00:06:30.16 You can go read commentaries where you can read pages 00:06:30.19\00:06:32.63 and pages and pages to try to understand those verses. 00:06:32.66\00:06:36.27 So what we present here 00:06:36.30\00:06:38.33 we hope it's a great blessing to God's people. 00:06:38.36\00:06:40.72 But in a sense it's kind of the hors d'oeuvres 00:06:40.75\00:06:44.01 for a great meal of digging into God's word for ourselves. 00:06:44.04\00:06:48.93 What does the last part in verse 1 of chapter 4 00:06:48.96\00:06:52.76 mean that when it says 00:06:52.79\00:06:54.48 "that the one who has suffered has ceased from sin?" 00:06:54.51\00:06:58.87 Boy, isn't that a great little phrase? 00:06:58.90\00:07:00.46 Just sticks in your mind. 00:07:00.49\00:07:01.86 "That one who has suffered has ceased from sin." 00:07:01.89\00:07:05.89 People get this idea "Wow, I want to have victory oversin. 00:07:05.92\00:07:11.23 So what I better do is I better go suffer." 00:07:11.26\00:07:15.78 Because it says here the one who has suffered 00:07:15.81\00:07:19.69 has ceased from sin. 00:07:19.72\00:07:21.09 Well, who is this one who has suffered? 00:07:21.12\00:07:22.70 That's the first question. 00:07:22.73\00:07:24.93 Some people wanna say "it's Jesus" because it says 00:07:24.96\00:07:29.57 in the verse that "Christ suffered in the flesh." 00:07:29.60\00:07:32.59 You know, so arm yourselves with the same way of thinking 00:07:32.62\00:07:36.08 for the one who has suffered in the flesh. 00:07:36.11\00:07:39.46 Well then Jesus suffered in the flesh? Sure. 00:07:39.49\00:07:42.32 But then the last phrase "has ceased from sin." 00:07:42.35\00:07:46.94 What's the problem of applying that to Jesus? 00:07:46.97\00:07:49.38 That he was sinning at one point and now he stopped sinning. 00:07:49.41\00:07:52.99 Yeah. So it doesn't seem to work with applying this to Jesus. 00:07:53.02\00:07:57.34 So it probably is applying to the Christian. 00:07:57.37\00:08:00.95 And saying the one who has suffered in the flesh 00:08:00.98\00:08:06.14 has ceased from sin. 00:08:06.17\00:08:07.56 And some commentators take this to teach 00:08:07.59\00:08:12.18 that suffering is a way of disciplining 00:08:12.21\00:08:15.08 the Christian to root out sinful behavior. 00:08:15.11\00:08:19.56 And that's one possibility. 00:08:19.59\00:08:22.13 I mean, we think back to 1st Peter 1 00:08:22.16\00:08:25.64 where it talks about the testing of your faith 00:08:25.67\00:08:29.81 and it says in verse 7. 00:08:29.84\00:08:32.20 So that the-- this is 1st Peter 1:7. 00:08:32.23\00:08:34.95 "So that the tested genuineness of your faith more precious 00:08:34.98\00:08:38.37 than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire 00:08:38.40\00:08:41.40 maybe found to result in praise and glory and honor 00:08:41.43\00:08:43.76 at the revelation of Jesus Christ." 00:08:43.79\00:08:45.96 That's one possibility. 00:08:45.99\00:08:47.49 Certainly suffering can show you the badness of sin. 00:08:47.52\00:08:55.33 But the suffering he's talking about here is probably suffering 00:08:55.36\00:08:58.81 because you're being persecuted for being a Christian. 00:08:58.84\00:09:02.32 And it's a little hard to see how if you're doing 00:09:02.35\00:09:06.00 what's right and you're suffering, 00:09:06.03\00:09:08.54 how that is that which cleanses sin out of you. 00:09:08.57\00:09:12.76 I mean, it's possible. 00:09:12.79\00:09:14.16 You might want to say "I'll never go back to that again. 00:09:14.19\00:09:16.61 I'll never go that way." 00:09:16.64\00:09:18.08 But actually the ceasing from sin concept here 00:09:18.11\00:09:25.13 may instead of being, you know, 00:09:25.16\00:09:27.04 headed towards cleansing sin out of the life 00:09:27.07\00:09:32.21 actually, a sign of it being cleansed from the life. 00:09:32.24\00:09:36.55 Now how can that be? What do we mean by this? 00:09:36.58\00:09:39.63 It goes like this. 00:09:39.66\00:09:41.14 The person is converted 00:09:41.17\00:09:43.15 like you had talked about your experience. 00:09:43.18\00:09:45.44 Their lifestyle changed. Okay? 00:09:45.47\00:09:47.93 And so they were now following Jesus. 00:09:47.96\00:09:51.31 I sometimes say to people that becoming a Christian 00:09:51.34\00:09:54.67 is like changing teams on a football team. 00:09:54.70\00:09:58.19 And you used to wear the black shirt 00:09:58.22\00:10:00.08 of death or whatever, you know, of Satan's team 00:10:00.11\00:10:02.95 and then you put on the red shirt of Jesus' team. 00:10:02.98\00:10:06.57 And He says "we're going this opposite direction 00:10:06.60\00:10:08.60 than you used to go. 00:10:08.63\00:10:10.00 You used to be going that way and now you're headed this way." 00:10:10.03\00:10:11.82 It sounds like a traitor. New team. 00:10:11.85\00:10:14.22 Like a traitor, you know. Yes, of course. 00:10:14.25\00:10:15.99 Betray your-- Yes, of course. 00:10:16.02\00:10:17.45 And the other team, what they're going to do? 00:10:17.48\00:10:18.85 They're gonna knock you right down. 00:10:18.88\00:10:20.25 They're gonna persecute you. All right. 00:10:20.28\00:10:21.90 So you left the way of sin 00:10:21.93\00:10:23.88 and you started to live for Jesus. 00:10:23.91\00:10:25.28 And what do they do? They persecute you. 00:10:25.31\00:10:27.07 All right, so the persecution, the suffering is a sign 00:10:27.10\00:10:33.43 that you left the old way and you're walking with Jesus. 00:10:33.46\00:10:38.41 That's another way to understand this verse. 00:10:38.44\00:10:41.05 So we tend to internalize this a lot and say, 00:10:41.08\00:10:44.77 "Wow, he has ceased from sin. 00:10:44.80\00:10:46.66 Ceased. He's sinless. He's perfect. 00:10:46.69\00:10:49.60 You have to remember that Peter 00:10:49.63\00:10:51.19 when he talks about sin is talking about actions. 00:10:51.22\00:10:54.23 He talks about things you do. 00:10:54.26\00:10:56.04 And he talks about-- he makes lists. 00:10:56.07\00:10:57.97 He tells you "don't do this. Don't do that. 00:10:58.00\00:10:59.37 You know, don't go down that way." 00:10:59.40\00:11:01.36 And it's always rather action oriented 00:11:01.39\00:11:03.89 in his descriptions of sin. 00:11:03.92\00:11:06.13 So we tend to, you know, sort of get it all 00:11:06.16\00:11:10.31 in our hearts and minds and say, you know, 00:11:10.34\00:11:12.64 just--he's not even sinning with the thought 00:11:12.67\00:11:14.99 or something if he's suffering. 00:11:15.02\00:11:17.13 And while the suffering has-- perhaps it's disciplining them. 00:11:17.16\00:11:21.48 I'm thinking maybe that this is more just a sign 00:11:21.51\00:11:23.83 that the person is a Christian. 00:11:23.86\00:11:25.60 People are persecuting them. That's a sign. 00:11:25.63\00:11:28.55 They are persecuting him. Why are they persecuting him? 00:11:28.58\00:11:31.02 Because he's doing what's right. 00:11:31.05\00:11:32.42 That's the sign he's going down the right path. 00:11:32.45\00:11:34.81 Now verses 2 and 3, how do they fit in with verse 1? 00:11:34.84\00:11:38.20 All right, it's a good question. 00:11:38.23\00:11:39.66 Let's just take a look them again just briefly. 00:11:39.69\00:11:41.97 Verse 2 says, "So as to live for the rest of the time 00:11:42.00\00:11:44.77 in the flesh no longer for human passions 00:11:44.80\00:11:47.20 but for the will of God. 00:11:47.23\00:11:48.60 For the time that is past suffices 00:11:48.63\00:11:50.49 for doing what the Gentiles want to do, 00:11:50.52\00:11:52.67 living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, 00:11:52.70\00:11:55.87 drinking parties, and lawless idolatry." 00:11:55.90\00:11:59.52 Verse 2 gives the purpose of the mindset 00:11:59.55\00:12:02.69 that has led to the suffering in verse 1. 00:12:02.72\00:12:05.45 So verses 2 and 3 stand in contrast 00:12:05.48\00:12:08.47 with one another actually. 00:12:08.50\00:12:10.00 Verse 2 talks about the future, 00:12:10.03\00:12:12.19 what this whole mindset is gonna lead you to. 00:12:12.22\00:12:16.44 And verse 3 talks about the past, 00:12:16.47\00:12:18.92 what was living like a Gentile was like. 00:12:18.95\00:12:21.50 The future is bright with living for God. 00:12:21.53\00:12:24.63 The past is what you used to do 00:12:24.66\00:12:26.90 for the-- in the Gentile lifestyle. 00:12:26.93\00:12:30.20 In between these two, in between these two 00:12:30.23\00:12:33.42 is the present in which the Christian is out of step 00:12:33.45\00:12:36.63 with the pagans around them 00:12:36.66\00:12:38.14 because they were converted and they became Christians. 00:12:38.17\00:12:41.27 Gentiles don't like that 00:12:41.30\00:12:43.11 and they make the Christians suffer. 00:12:43.14\00:12:44.56 The list of vices that we find in verse 3 00:12:44.59\00:12:47.63 is still typical of our world today. 00:12:47.66\00:12:50.96 You look at the entertainment industry 00:12:50.99\00:12:53.33 and all the things that they focus attention on. 00:12:53.36\00:12:56.51 See Hollywood has discovered 00:12:56.54\00:12:58.42 that sex and violence sells their films. 00:12:58.45\00:13:02.84 Sells their programs. So what do they focus on? 00:13:02.87\00:13:05.37 Sex and violence. 00:13:05.40\00:13:06.77 And when they put the two together 00:13:06.80\00:13:08.17 it sells them more. 00:13:08.20\00:13:09.57 They're all about making the money. 00:13:09.60\00:13:10.97 They're not about establishing Christian character, you see. 00:13:11.00\00:13:13.35 So this is just like reading the newspapers today. 00:13:13.38\00:13:16.74 And still with us to this day. 00:13:16.77\00:13:19.21 And perhaps you can also share 00:13:19.24\00:13:20.61 what reaction does the world have 00:13:20.64\00:13:23.00 when Christians or when people decide to, 00:13:23.03\00:13:25.63 you know, follow Jesus? 00:13:25.66\00:13:27.62 And maybe you can answer that after the short break. 00:13:27.65\00:13:30.86 Well, friends, we're studying 00:13:30.89\00:13:32.26 1st and 2nd Peter and with Dr. Tom Shepherd. 00:13:32.29\00:13:34.91 This is a very interesting Bible study. 00:13:34.94\00:13:37.64 And be with us after this short break. 00:13:37.67\00:13:40.13
