And we're back to "Books of the Book." 00:00:01.40\00:00:02.77 We're studying Chapter 3 of the book 1 Peter. 00:00:02.80\00:00:07.50 Dr. Shepherd, you were commenting on verse 18, 00:00:07.53\00:00:10.16 I don't think you were quite finished there. 00:00:10.19\00:00:11.63 All right, so we have verse 18, and we see that, 00:00:11.66\00:00:15.01 we have this whole experience of Christ 00:00:15.04\00:00:17.71 that is described there. 00:00:17.74\00:00:19.89 Placing this whole thing in the context of the whole book 00:00:19.92\00:00:21.91 is rather interesting that there is quite a parallel 00:00:21.94\00:00:24.71 between this passage in 3:18-22 and the passage 00:00:24.74\00:00:28.74 we already studied in 2:21-25. 00:00:28.77\00:00:32.61 The parallels go like this, here's some of the parallels. 00:00:32.64\00:00:35.14 Christ suffered and we suffer. 00:00:35.17\00:00:37.89 Remember, he was talking about the servant's suffering there. 00:00:37.92\00:00:40.03 Christ is the example in both places, there and over here. 00:00:40.06\00:00:44.14 Christ has a vicarious action that's mentioned, 00:00:44.17\00:00:47.30 He takes our place, He died for us. 00:00:47.33\00:00:49.81 Christ's suffering saves us, 00:00:49.84\00:00:51.98 and both of these passages describe that. 00:00:52.01\00:00:54.18 So it's rather interesting that he has similar context 00:00:54.21\00:00:58.73 where in chapter 2, we had the servants 00:00:58.76\00:01:02.54 and they were going through suffering, 00:01:02.57\00:01:03.94 they was supposed to follow the example of Jesus. 00:01:03.97\00:01:06.29 And in chapter 3, we already said, verses 3: 13-17 00:01:06.32\00:01:10.35 talk about the Christian giving a proper witness to the world, 00:01:10.38\00:01:13.81 living faithfully and suffering for it 00:01:13.84\00:01:16.11 and then he supports it. 00:01:16.14\00:01:17.51 So he, kind of, thinks his thoughts again 00:01:17.54\00:01:19.72 but he expands them into other areas 00:01:19.75\00:01:21.92 that he hasn't talk about. 00:01:21.95\00:01:23.32 So in verse 18, we found that, 00:01:23.35\00:01:25.75 he gives the--almost the typical gospel presentation. 00:01:25.78\00:01:28.88 Christ suffered, He died, He was buried, 00:01:28.91\00:01:32.81 He arose again, you know, 00:01:32.84\00:01:34.68 and so He suffered in the flesh 00:01:34.71\00:01:36.22 and then He was made alive in the spirit or by the spirit. 00:01:36.25\00:01:40.63 Okay, and that bring us 00:01:40.66\00:01:42.44 then to next part, the next idea. 00:01:42.47\00:01:45.22 Now verse 19 seems to be one of those difficult passages 00:01:45.25\00:01:48.57 to understand and this is one of those problematic verses 00:01:48.60\00:01:53.30 in the Bible where we don't really know what it means. 00:01:53.33\00:01:56.30 Perhaps you can comment on this verse 00:01:56.33\00:01:58.61 because it seems like Jesus went somewhere, 00:01:58.64\00:02:00.87 He did something, He preached. 00:02:00.90\00:02:03.11 So what did He preach? 00:02:03.14\00:02:04.51 To whom did He preach, and what is He doing, 00:02:04.54\00:02:07.60 where did He go? 00:02:07.63\00:02:09.00 Okay, so there's a lot of questions there. 00:02:09.03\00:02:10.72 Where did He go? 00:02:10.75\00:02:12.12 When did He go? 00:02:12.15\00:02:13.52 To whom did He preach? 00:02:13.55\00:02:14.92 And what did He preach? 00:02:14.95\00:02:16.35 Let me just comment about problem texts in the Bible. 00:02:16.38\00:02:19.65 I've asked students on tests sometimes. 00:02:19.68\00:02:22.62 How many problem texts are there in the Bible? 00:02:22.65\00:02:25.37 You know what the answer is? 00:02:25.40\00:02:26.77 What is that? Zero. 00:02:26.80\00:02:28.88 There are no problem texts in the Bible, 00:02:28.91\00:02:30.64 because the text is not the problem. 00:02:30.67\00:02:34.73 We don't want to call the revelation of God a problem. 00:02:34.76\00:02:38.14 And when we get that kind of mentality 00:02:38.17\00:02:39.99 that there's a problem, 00:02:40.02\00:02:42.83 actually it limits us to see other truths that is. 00:02:42.86\00:02:45.87 The text is not the problem, our understanding of the text 00:02:45.90\00:02:48.66 can be a problem but not the text itself. 00:02:48.69\00:02:50.82 So we got to, kind of, follow or try and follow 00:02:50.85\00:02:52.84 Peter's discussion here. 00:02:52.87\00:02:55.42 Okay, so just like you said, in verse 19, 00:02:55.45\00:02:58.87 it talks about him going some place. 00:02:58.90\00:03:01.46 Now one of the things that question is, who went? 00:03:01.49\00:03:07.01 Because in-- if you read your version, 00:03:07.04\00:03:09.83 at the end of verse 18, it says, "He was made alive, 00:03:09.86\00:03:13.92 by the spirit," and then how does verse 19 start? 00:03:13.95\00:03:16.39 "By whom also He went 00:03:16.42\00:03:18.29 and preached to the spirits in prison." 00:03:18.32\00:03:20.43 Now, my version has a capital 'H' on He, 00:03:20.46\00:03:23.12 I don't know if that makes a difference or not. 00:03:23.15\00:03:24.52 Yes, yes, well, who's doing the preaching there? 00:03:24.55\00:03:26.22 According to the version that you have, 00:03:26.25\00:03:27.81 it's probably the Holy Spirit. 00:03:27.84\00:03:29.97 You know, by which He went and preached 00:03:30.00\00:03:31.90 to the spirits in prison. 00:03:31.93\00:03:33.30 Now we got talk about these spirits in prison 00:03:33.33\00:03:35.02 and who they are. 00:03:35.05\00:03:36.42 But first we want to talk about 00:03:36.45\00:03:37.82 who in the world is preaching, okay? 00:03:37.85\00:03:39.77 If we take verse 18, the end of verse 18, 00:03:39.80\00:03:42.18 we say that He was made-- He died in the flesh 00:03:42.21\00:03:47.51 and He was made alive in the spirit or by the spirit. 00:03:47.54\00:03:52.28 The problem was seeing that it's the Holy Spirit 00:03:52.31\00:03:54.36 is you have this flesh and spirit, kind of idea. 00:03:54.39\00:03:58.76 And if it is the Holy Spirit, 00:03:58.79\00:04:00.38 it kind of seems to break a little bit 00:04:00.41\00:04:02.23 because the first part we're talking about Jesus. 00:04:02.26\00:04:04.92 He was made alive in the flesh and then He's made, 00:04:04.95\00:04:09.23 I mean, He was put to death in the flesh 00:04:09.26\00:04:11.85 and then He was made alive in the spirit. 00:04:11.88\00:04:14.94 That seems to be a nice parallelism. 00:04:14.97\00:04:16.85 If you said He was put to death din the flesh 00:04:16.88\00:04:19.13 but He was made alive by the spirit, 00:04:19.16\00:04:21.14 it seems to break that parallelism up a little bit. 00:04:21.17\00:04:24.11 So it's probably better to take the end of verse 18 to say, 00:04:24.14\00:04:27.85 He was put to death in the flesh 00:04:27.88\00:04:29.92 but He was made alive in the spirit, 00:04:29.95\00:04:31.99 that's in the spiritual realm. 00:04:32.02\00:04:33.81 In which, that means in the spiritual realm, 00:04:33.84\00:04:38.00 in which He that means Christ went and proclaimed, 00:04:38.03\00:04:44.88 or does yours say preached? 00:04:44.91\00:04:46.70 Preached. Yeah. Sure does. Yeah. Okay. 00:04:46.73\00:04:49.28 Now this does not-- this does not use the verb 00:04:49.31\00:04:52.15 "to bring good news." 00:04:52.18\00:04:54.59 Evangelizo, that we use the word evangelism comes from. 00:04:54.62\00:04:57.97 This is not to evangelize, but it is to proclaim. 00:04:58.00\00:05:02.09 Now sometimes that terminology could be used to talk about 00:05:02.12\00:05:04.67 proclaiming the gospel message, okay. 00:05:04.70\00:05:07.14 But we should notice what verse 19 00:05:07.17\00:05:10.78 does not say, okay? 00:05:10.81\00:05:14.46 Verse 19, does not say 00:05:14.49\00:05:19.07 that He was dead when He preached. 00:05:19.10\00:05:23.44 Verse 19, does not say that He went down to preach. Right. 00:05:23.47\00:05:30.74 And verse 19, does not say, what He proclaimed or preached. 00:05:30.77\00:05:38.02 Okay? So it's important to know as much 00:05:38.05\00:05:41.96 what the text does not say, as to know 00:05:41.99\00:05:46.82 what it does say, right? 00:05:46.85\00:05:49.61 There are three basic options for this passage 00:05:49.64\00:05:52.98 that scholars have come up with. Okay? 00:05:53.01\00:05:55.92 To refer to what in the world is it talking about 00:05:55.95\00:06:00.93 and what is involved and what Christ did. 00:06:00.96\00:06:03.99 Well, one of the positions, I'll call the three positions, 00:06:04.02\00:06:07.75 the hell position, the flood position 00:06:07.78\00:06:10.55 and the ascension position. 00:06:10.58\00:06:12.08 Okay. Hell, flood and the ascension. All right. 00:06:12.11\00:06:16.79 The hell position is a traditional position, 00:06:16.82\00:06:20.96 held by our domination but by some others. 00:06:20.99\00:06:25.18 That Christ when He died, as a spirit, He didn't, 00:06:25.21\00:06:31.55 you know, sleep in the grave as the Bible teaches 00:06:31.58\00:06:34.26 but He went to the spiritual world 00:06:34.29\00:06:39.51 and there He preached salvation to dead souls, 00:06:39.54\00:06:43.63 so that they could have a second chance at salvation. 00:06:43.66\00:06:47.57 And He's so strong that He even preached in hell, 00:06:47.60\00:06:52.00 that's the hell position. 00:06:52.03\00:06:54.96 The flood position picks up on a later part of this. 00:06:54.99\00:07:00.69 In verse 20 it says that "He went and proclaimed 00:07:00.72\00:07:04.53 to the spirits in heaven-- in prison because they formerly 00:07:04.56\00:07:08.98 did not obey when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, 00:07:09.01\00:07:12.50 while the Ark was being prepared in which a few, 00:07:12.53\00:07:14.88 that is eight persons were brought safely through water." 00:07:14.91\00:07:19.00 All right. So these people, 00:07:19.03\00:07:21.46 this time of preaching to the spirits 00:07:21.49\00:07:26.69 was at the time of the flood. 00:07:26.72\00:07:29.37 And this position takes that the Holy Spirit 00:07:29.40\00:07:33.19 or the pre-incarnate Jesus went and proclaimed 00:07:33.22\00:07:37.85 to these spirits in prison whoever they are and proclaimed, 00:07:37.88\00:07:43.69 preached to them, maybe the gospel, 00:07:43.72\00:07:45.49 He was preaching through Noah to the people, 00:07:45.52\00:07:48.86 the antediluvian people at that time. All right. 00:07:48.89\00:07:53.21 Why Peter would go to that and talk about 00:07:53.24\00:07:55.97 that seems a little hard to piece together, 00:07:56.00\00:07:59.77 you know, exactly why bring in the flood and Noah 00:07:59.80\00:08:03.51 and then who are these spirits in prison? 00:08:03.54\00:08:05.91 And you know, what's going on with them. 00:08:05.94\00:08:07.34 So there are a lot of questions that people ask. 00:08:07.37\00:08:09.63 The third position is the ascension position. 00:08:09.66\00:08:13.13 That is when Christ makes this proclamation, 00:08:13.16\00:08:18.29 He is going to spirit in prison, these are like evil angels 00:08:18.32\00:08:23.28 or spiritual forces of the dark side of this world 00:08:23.31\00:08:27.23 of the great controversy and He's proclaiming 00:08:27.26\00:08:30.60 not while He's dead but after He's been raised to life, okay. 00:08:30.63\00:08:35.62 That He goes and proclaims to them victory, 00:08:35.65\00:08:38.54 because He has won victory over sin and they have lost. 00:08:38.57\00:08:44.22 This is kind of the picture "Christus Victor," 00:08:44.25\00:08:47.29 He is ascending and He is, you know, 00:08:47.32\00:08:51.30 declaring His victory over the evil forces. Okay. 00:08:51.33\00:08:54.83 Those are the three positions. 00:08:54.86\00:08:56.23 Now we could take a long time to talk about 00:08:56.26\00:08:58.36 which one of these makes the most sense, 00:08:58.39\00:09:00.54 you know, and go back and forth some of them 00:09:00.57\00:09:02.32 but there is a valuable parallel in the book of 1 Timothy 3:16, 00:09:02.35\00:09:07.31 that helps gives us some pointers 00:09:07.34\00:09:08.71 and we got to kind of wrap this up quickly. 00:09:08.74\00:09:10.67 But we'll point out what seems 00:09:10.70\00:09:12.98 to be the best position for this passage. 00:09:13.01\00:09:16.51 1 Peter 3:16, it's kind of like a little hymn 00:09:16.54\00:09:20.75 that the Apostle Paul refers to 1 Peter 3:16, 00:09:20.78\00:09:24.11 you want you to read that for us? 00:09:24.14\00:09:25.51 "And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness. 00:09:25.54\00:09:28.75 God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the spirit, 00:09:28.78\00:09:32.75 seen by angles, preached among the Gentiles, 00:09:32.78\00:09:36.26 believed on in the world, received up in glory." 00:09:36.29\00:09:40.60 All right. This was maybe a little hymn 00:09:40.63\00:09:42.82 that they used to sing. 00:09:42.85\00:09:44.22 He's talking about Jesus. 00:09:44.25\00:09:45.86 He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated in the spirit. 00:09:45.89\00:09:50.42 Notice the same terminology, in the flesh, in the spirit. 00:09:50.45\00:09:53.90 Seen by angels, notice, seen by angels. 00:09:53.93\00:09:57.70 Proclaimed among the nations, that's our evangelistic work. 00:09:57.73\00:10:01.22 Believed on in the world, 00:10:01.25\00:10:02.62 taken up in glory, there's His ascension. 00:10:02.65\00:10:04.56 The same kind of pattern that you have, 00:10:04.59\00:10:07.42 He is manifested in the flesh, vindicated in the spirit, 00:10:07.45\00:10:10.87 seen by angels, take up in glory, 00:10:10.90\00:10:13.53 which points to the idea that what's happening in verse 18-19, 00:10:13.56\00:10:18.89 is actually the ascension of Jesus Christ in glory. 00:10:18.92\00:10:23.70 Who are these evil spirits in prison? 00:10:23.73\00:10:26.59 These are evil angels who disobeyed God 00:10:26.62\00:10:29.45 and who were cast out heaven. 00:10:29.48\00:10:31.68 They have been fighting God and His truth 00:10:31.71\00:10:33.88 ever since that time. 00:10:33.91\00:10:35.80 And at Christ's resurrection, they were totally defeated 00:10:35.83\00:10:42.15 and they faced off against a force that was much greater 00:10:42.18\00:10:45.52 than they could stand. 00:10:45.55\00:10:47.27 Now if you read in that kind of light-- 00:10:47.30\00:10:50.07 let's read the text again and we'll sort of see it all. 00:10:50.10\00:10:52.53 I'll sort of fill in here a little bit, 00:10:52.56\00:10:54.03 the interpretation-- Okay, so we're reading verse-- 00:10:54.06\00:10:55.85 We're starting at verse 18, 00:10:55.88\00:10:57.27 "For Christ also suffered once for sins, 00:10:57.30\00:10:59.86 the righteous for the unrighteous that he might 00:10:59.89\00:11:01.86 bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh 00:11:01.89\00:11:04.36 at the cross and made alive in the spirit at his resurrection, 00:11:04.39\00:11:09.51 in which spiritual realm, He went and proclaimed 00:11:09.54\00:11:12.66 to the spirits, the evil forces in prison 00:11:12.69\00:11:15.79 because they formerly did not obey 00:11:15.82\00:11:18.21 when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, 00:11:18.24\00:11:20.95 while Ark was being prepared, in which of few 00:11:20.98\00:11:24.04 that is eight persons were brought safely 00:11:24.07\00:11:25.99 through the water" and he's digressing a little bit 00:11:26.02\00:11:27.88 but for a good reason, he says, verse 21, 00:11:27.91\00:11:30.74 baptism which corresponds to this now saves you, 00:11:30.77\00:11:34.38 "not as a removal of a dirt from the body 00:11:34.41\00:11:36.32 but as the appeal to God for a good conscience, 00:11:36.35\00:11:38.68 through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. 00:11:38.71\00:11:40.22 Coming back to the resurrection, 00:11:40.25\00:11:41.79 baptism links you to the resurrection of Jesus. 00:11:41.82\00:11:44.25 Who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God 00:11:44.28\00:11:47.40 with angels and authorities, powers having 00:11:47.43\00:11:49.62 been subjected to him. All right. 00:11:49.65\00:11:51.38 So how does this fit with verse 13-17, 00:11:51.41\00:11:56.18 see that's question. 00:11:56.21\00:11:57.74 But verse 13-17 was about the Christian 00:11:57.77\00:12:00.74 suffering for sharing their faith. 00:12:00.77\00:12:03.45 And being persecuted by the wicked 00:12:03.48\00:12:06.27 because they were Christians. 00:12:06.30\00:12:09.14 He says, "Well, that's exactly 00:12:09.17\00:12:10.83 what happened to Jesus, isn't it?" 00:12:10.86\00:12:13.00 That's exactly what happened to him. 00:12:13.03\00:12:14.40 He suffered and died and went through hell for you. 00:12:14.43\00:12:17.96 He went through all this trouble. 00:12:17.99\00:12:19.39 But God raised him from the dead. 00:12:19.42\00:12:21.73 And that victory of Jesus Christ when He rose from the dead 00:12:21.76\00:12:25.55 is the same victory the Christian will have, 00:12:25.58\00:12:28.54 if he is faithful she is faithful to the Lord Jesus. 00:12:28.57\00:12:32.07 So you see, this position makes 00:12:32.10\00:12:35.79 verses 18 to 22 really fit 00:12:35.82\00:12:38.81 as a support for verses 13 to 17, 00:12:38.84\00:12:41.71 where some of the other ones don't seem to fit 00:12:41.74\00:12:44.19 so well at all, this one shows you that as Christ suffered, 00:12:44.22\00:12:48.03 as He was vindicated and rose from the dead, 00:12:48.06\00:12:50.85 that's exactly what's going to happen to us. 00:12:50.88\00:12:53.46 If we will be faithful to Christ, 00:12:53.49\00:12:55.46 and we also will have that same experience. 00:12:55.49\00:12:58.61 Dr. Shepherd, I feel like 00:12:58.64\00:13:00.01 I've been in a classroom setting 00:13:00.04\00:13:01.74 with you at the Theological Seminary 00:13:01.77\00:13:03.40 at Andrews University and we want to thank you 00:13:03.43\00:13:05.04 for joining us in this very interesting Bible Study. 00:13:05.07\00:13:08.50 And we want to also continue encouraging our viewers 00:13:08.53\00:13:11.62 and listening audience to join us 00:13:11.65\00:13:13.72 in this series of "Books of the Book." 00:13:13.75\00:13:15.61 We are studying 1 and 2 Peter 00:13:15.64\00:13:18.65 and there are still much more to learn. 00:13:18.68\00:13:20.24 So be with us. 00:13:20.27\00:13:21.99 See you next time and God bless you. 00:13:22.02\00:13:24.01
