Hello and welcome to "Books of the Book." 00:00:21.70\00:00:23.92 A program that dives deep into the word of God, 00:00:23.95\00:00:26.33 I'm Deyvy Rodriguez and with us is Dr. Tom Shepherd. 00:00:26.36\00:00:29.73 He is a professor of New Testament 00:00:29.76\00:00:31.68 at the Theological Seminary at Andrews University. 00:00:31.71\00:00:35.32 We've been talking about being treated wrongfully 00:00:35.35\00:00:37.70 for doing what's right. 00:00:37.73\00:00:39.19 So join us as we continue studying together 00:00:39.22\00:00:41.53 the books of 1 and 2 Peter. 00:00:41.56\00:00:43.85 Dr. Shepherd, welcome. Thank you. 00:00:43.88\00:00:45.69 I've been learning a little more about you, 00:00:45.72\00:00:47.69 as we study here and I also learn that you are a musician. 00:00:47.72\00:00:51.69 Is that right? That's true. 00:00:51.72\00:00:53.75 Music was always an important part of my life. 00:00:53.78\00:00:56.38 As a child, we played music together, 00:00:56.41\00:00:59.39 played French horn, learned a little bit piano, 00:00:59.42\00:01:01.58 singing groups different things like that. 00:01:01.61\00:01:04.08 But it was until when my-- much later, 00:01:04.11\00:01:09.09 when my daughter said she wanted to take up the violin, 00:01:09.12\00:01:13.62 my wife and I, so we were kind of like, 00:01:13.65\00:01:15.76 "Well, I don't know," 00:01:15.79\00:01:17.63 and finally we said to her, "look, 00:01:17.66\00:01:19.03 if you raise the money for it, we will purchase the violin, 00:01:19.06\00:01:25.53 you'll pay for the violin and we'll pay for lessons." 00:01:25.56\00:01:28.31 And she-- go getter that she is, 00:01:28.34\00:01:30.82 she did that and so then she'd been playing 00:01:30.85\00:01:34.90 and you know, working on violin for about a year 00:01:34.93\00:01:37.19 and I said, "I want to do something with my daughter." 00:01:37.22\00:01:39.53 So I said what--shall I do, I'll take up the cello 00:01:39.56\00:01:42.19 and I didn't realize how much fun it would be, 00:01:42.22\00:01:45.55 it would become a passion, I started string quartets, 00:01:45.58\00:01:49.26 I've been touring around different places, 00:01:49.29\00:01:51.49 still do music programs, we have a program 00:01:51.52\00:01:53.83 at the Seminary called Classical Seminary 00:01:53.86\00:01:56.10 that we put on twice a year and just a great joy, 00:01:56.13\00:01:59.57 music is a wonderful blessing from God. 00:01:59.60\00:02:01.46 Wonderful and I'm sure that's a pastime 00:02:01.49\00:02:03.16 when you're not teaching? Yes. Okay. 00:02:03.19\00:02:06.22 Well, we're studying the books of 1 Peter 00:02:06.25\00:02:09.16 and we are picking up on 3:13-22 we're studying today. 00:02:09.19\00:02:15.87 And give us a little review 00:02:15.90\00:02:18.83 on what we've been studying on previous programs. 00:02:18.86\00:02:21.57 All right, well, this is very important, 00:02:21.60\00:02:23.10 this whole passage starts in verse 13 00:02:23.13\00:02:26.28 and it goes through verse 22. 00:02:26.31\00:02:28.88 What we're gonna study today is verses 18-22, 5 verses 00:02:28.91\00:02:33.92 that have some real challenges in there for many people. 00:02:33.95\00:02:38.88 And one of the difficulties is if these verses are separated 00:02:38.91\00:02:44.31 from their context from what goes before. 00:02:44.34\00:02:47.18 So in verse 13-17 we recall that, 00:02:47.21\00:02:51.87 he talked about the Christians 00:02:51.90\00:02:54.69 being faithful and giving a faithful witness, 00:02:54.72\00:02:58.03 a defense for their faith whenever they're asked. 00:02:58.06\00:03:01.26 And that there would be people around them 00:03:01.29\00:03:02.79 who would not appreciate that, 00:03:02.82\00:03:04.82 and who would prosecute them as a result. 00:03:04.85\00:03:07.75 But that they should not be afraid to give their witness 00:03:07.78\00:03:11.10 and they should share it freely with people, 00:03:11.13\00:03:14.85 keeping in mind being gentle, being reverent 00:03:14.88\00:03:18.55 and being conscious of God and of, 00:03:18.58\00:03:21.86 you know, his whole perspective on life. 00:03:21.89\00:03:24.37 We talked a little bit about 00:03:24.40\00:03:26.76 a little pattern of witnessing called tagging 00:03:26.79\00:03:29.34 and how it's a very low key kind of a way. 00:03:29.37\00:03:32.24 I'd like to add one more thing 00:03:32.27\00:03:33.64 on to that actually that's kind of interesting 00:03:33.67\00:03:36.36 and that is concept that those aspects of our faith 00:03:36.39\00:03:42.39 that are unique, that are different, 00:03:42.42\00:03:46.61 are actually God's arrows 00:03:46.64\00:03:49.17 or shall we say God's windows to open the light, 00:03:49.20\00:03:52.66 to let the light into other peoples lives. 00:03:52.69\00:03:55.61 I know some young people who were studying 00:03:55.64\00:03:57.19 at a major university in the United States. 00:03:57.22\00:04:01.06 And Adventist young people 00:04:01.09\00:04:04.23 but amongst those who were not of the Adventist faith. 00:04:04.26\00:04:08.47 And these young people became known for those 00:04:08.50\00:04:11.08 who wouldn't come to lab on Saturday, 00:04:11.11\00:04:14.41 who would keep the Sabbath 00:04:14.44\00:04:16.49 and this actually became quite a reference point 00:04:16.52\00:04:21.65 where people would take note of them. 00:04:21.68\00:04:25.12 Another Christian talking to them 00:04:25.15\00:04:27.06 it was, kind of, moaning a little bit. 00:04:27.09\00:04:29.65 They hadn't done enough and what strikes me about it all 00:04:29.68\00:04:33.84 is that this unique quality of our faith 00:04:33.87\00:04:36.03 that we keep the Sabbath, 00:04:36.06\00:04:37.79 is an opener, it's actually a tag. 00:04:37.82\00:04:41.05 When you--they say, "Why do you go to church on Saturday?" 00:04:41.08\00:04:44.73 Or "Why don't you eat meat?" 00:04:44.76\00:04:46.80 Or "Why don't you drink alcohol with us?" 00:04:46.83\00:04:49.71 But these are actually God's doors 00:04:49.74\00:04:51.62 for you to go and give a witness to them. 00:04:51.65\00:04:55.10 Some people are-- they kind of shy 00:04:55.13\00:04:57.11 away from our particular characteristics. 00:04:57.14\00:04:59.35 No, we shouldn't at all. 00:04:59.38\00:05:00.94 The way we dress, the way we act, the way we speak, 00:05:00.97\00:05:04.03 these are all ways of sharing our faith with others. 00:05:04.06\00:05:06.65 And that gives people the curiosity 00:05:06.68\00:05:08.47 to probe questions on our faith? Yes. 00:05:08.50\00:05:10.69 As you said earlier, this is a window to share 00:05:10.72\00:05:13.77 and witness to others. 00:05:13.80\00:05:15.67 Why don't we read verse 18 then? 00:05:15.70\00:05:17.79 I think it's a great idea. 00:05:17.82\00:05:19.19 "For Christ also suffered once for sins, 00:05:19.22\00:05:21.64 the just for the unjust that He might bring us to God, 00:05:21.67\00:05:25.70 being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit." 00:05:25.73\00:05:30.53 Okay, so how did this-- Keep going. 00:05:30.56\00:05:31.93 Let's read the whole passage, all the way through verse 22. 00:05:31.96\00:05:34.35 "By whom he went and preached to the spirits in prison, 00:05:34.38\00:05:38.57 who formerly were disobedient, when once the divine 00:05:38.60\00:05:41.75 longsuffering waited in the days of Noah 00:05:41.78\00:05:44.49 while the Ark was being prepared in which a few, 00:05:44.52\00:05:47.53 that is eight souls were saved through water. 00:05:47.56\00:05:50.43 There is also antitype which now saves us baptism, 00:05:50.46\00:05:54.88 not the renewal of the filth of the flesh, 00:05:54.91\00:05:57.33 but the answer of a good conscience toward God, 00:05:57.36\00:06:01.13 through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 00:06:01.16\00:06:03.60 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, 00:06:03.63\00:06:07.08 angels and authorities 00:06:07.11\00:06:08.64 and powers having been made subject to Him." 00:06:08.67\00:06:13.01 So verse 18, how does Peter link this verse 00:06:13.04\00:06:17.51 with what is going on before? 00:06:17.54\00:06:20.25 All right. This is a very crucial question. 00:06:20.28\00:06:23.02 And it's--too many times, these verses, 00:06:23.05\00:06:27.14 verses 18-22 are not properly set 00:06:27.17\00:06:30.62 within their setting in verse 13-18 00:06:30.65\00:06:33.56 Verse 13-17 is all about the faithful witness, 00:06:33.59\00:06:38.46 being faithful when you're persecuted 00:06:38.49\00:06:40.42 and not giving up, you know, make sure-- 00:06:40.45\00:06:42.52 and that you give the proper witness to Christ. 00:06:42.55\00:06:46.52 So verse 18 begins with the word "for." 00:06:46.55\00:06:53.44 "For Christ also suffered once for sins, 00:06:53.47\00:06:57.16 the righteous for the unrighteous," all right. 00:06:57.19\00:06:59.61 So verses 18-20, are a support for the points 00:06:59.64\00:07:07.52 that are made in verses 13-17. 00:07:07.55\00:07:10.34 It's very, very important, so I want to say it again. 00:07:10.37\00:07:13.57 Verse 18 and onward are clearly support 00:07:13.60\00:07:19.31 for what the apostle has been saying in verses 13-17. 00:07:19.34\00:07:24.57 So the point in verses 13-17 00:07:24.60\00:07:27.66 was to be a fearless witness for Christ, to do good 00:07:27.69\00:07:32.47 and be willing to suffer for it is as a Christian, 00:07:32.50\00:07:37.92 it's better to do good and to suffer 00:07:37.95\00:07:40.36 than to do what is wrong. 00:07:40.39\00:07:42.30 So verse 18 now, returns to the sufferings of Christ, 00:07:42.33\00:07:47.63 to redeem us, the just for the unjust, it says. 00:07:47.66\00:07:52.25 So up to this point, we would say 00:07:52.28\00:07:56.09 that we follow in the steps of Jesus. Okay? 00:07:56.12\00:07:59.44 His righteous death brought us to God 00:07:59.47\00:08:02.24 and our righteous witness helps bring others to God. 00:08:02.27\00:08:05.68 We're following the steps of Jesus. 00:08:05.71\00:08:07.16 This is the pattern that we've already been seeing 00:08:07.19\00:08:09.50 take place in previous chapters 00:08:09.53\00:08:13.00 where in chapter 2, the servants are supposed to follow 00:08:13.03\00:08:17.97 in the example of Jesus 00:08:18.00\00:08:19.95 and the wives are supposed to also follow 00:08:19.98\00:08:23.13 in the same kind of pattern and they become examples of-- 00:08:23.16\00:08:25.90 there's this whole thing about following the example of Jesus. 00:08:25.93\00:08:28.55 So when you talk about suffering and then it says, 00:08:28.58\00:08:31.89 "For Christ also suffered once for sins, 00:08:31.92\00:08:33.84 the righteous for the unrighteous 00:08:33.87\00:08:35.67 that He might bring us to God." 00:08:35.70\00:08:38.82 That sounds all very fine, logical, no problem so far. 00:08:38.85\00:08:43.85 All right. It looks good. 00:08:43.88\00:08:48.04 Now, let's read verses, the following verses, 00:08:48.07\00:08:52.84 verses 8-20-- Let's just start with just verse 18 and 19. 00:08:52.87\00:08:57.63 Just two, those two verses-- Let's reread those verses. 00:08:57.66\00:08:59.74 "For Christ also suffered once for sins, 00:08:59.77\00:09:03.06 the just for the unjust that He might bring us to God, 00:09:03.09\00:09:06.10 be made put to death in the flesh 00:09:06.13\00:09:08.18 but made alive by the spirit, by whom also he went 00:09:08.21\00:09:14.26 and preached to the spirits in prison, 00:09:14.29\00:09:16.91 who formerly were disobedient when once that divine 00:09:16.94\00:09:20.58 long suffering waited in the days of Noah, 00:09:20.61\00:09:23.01 while the Ark was being prepared in which a few, 00:09:23.04\00:09:26.20 that is eight souls were saved through water." All right. 00:09:26.23\00:09:29.25 Stop right there. That is enough. 00:09:29.28\00:09:32.22 These three verses, especially verse 19, 00:09:32.25\00:09:34.90 there's been a lot of ink spilled in scholarship. 00:09:34.93\00:09:38.17 You know, describing and discussing 00:09:38.20\00:09:40.65 and talking about what in the world, 00:09:40.68\00:09:42.88 is this all talking about. 00:09:42.91\00:09:44.84 So we want to, kind of, go slowly through this 00:09:44.87\00:09:49.93 to get an understanding of what he's saying. 00:09:49.96\00:09:53.09 The first point we notice is in verse 18. All right. 00:09:53.12\00:09:57.80 So Christ suffered, and let me kind of ask this in questions 00:09:57.83\00:10:02.13 and we'll sort of walk through it. 00:10:02.16\00:10:04.22 Christ suffered, when did He suffer? 00:10:04.25\00:10:07.31 At the cross. 00:10:07.34\00:10:08.71 At the cross, we call it His passion 00:10:08.74\00:10:11.50 and so the experience bringing Him up to cross 00:10:11.53\00:10:14.50 and He suffers on the cross. 00:10:14.53\00:10:17.33 He said "Christ suffered once for sins, 00:10:17.36\00:10:20.13 the righteous for the unrighteous." 00:10:20.16\00:10:22.40 Here the words "Christ suffered for sins," 00:10:22.43\00:10:25.69 it reminds us of what happened 00:10:25.72\00:10:27.98 and we talked about in chapter 2, 00:10:28.01\00:10:29.76 we said there was a big surprise and we said that. 00:10:29.79\00:10:34.85 The big surprise was, this was the only place 00:10:34.88\00:10:36.65 in the New Testament that talked about 00:10:36.68\00:10:38.45 "Christ suffered for you, Christ suffered for sins." 00:10:38.48\00:10:42.05 Actually, when we gave that presentation, 00:10:42.08\00:10:43.66 I said there were two surprises, 00:10:43.69\00:10:45.55 probably very careful listeners will say I only mentioned one. 00:10:45.58\00:10:49.44 The other surprise actually in chapter 2 was that, 00:10:49.47\00:10:52.15 that is the very first place in the book of 1 Peter 00:10:52.18\00:10:55.11 that talks about something that Christ did. 00:10:55.14\00:10:58.57 So it kind of like it really focuses your attention 00:10:58.60\00:11:01.60 to get in there and see that "Christ suffered for you" 00:11:01.63\00:11:05.22 is the key to this whole understanding this whole book. 00:11:05.25\00:11:07.77 All right, so he is coming back to that again. 00:11:07.80\00:11:09.42 "He suffered that He might bring us to God," 00:11:09.45\00:11:12.34 all right, "He was put to death in the flesh," 00:11:12.37\00:11:16.41 when did that happen? 00:11:16.44\00:11:19.46 At the cross. At the cross. Okay. 00:11:19.49\00:11:22.34 "But made alive," my text says here, 00:11:22.37\00:11:25.11 "but made alive in the spirit." When did that happen? 00:11:25.14\00:11:29.87 The resurrection. The resurrection. 00:11:29.90\00:11:31.77 Now yours reads a little differently. 00:11:31.80\00:11:33.48 It says, "Made alive..." Made alive by the spirit. 00:11:33.51\00:11:37.52 By the spirit. Yes. 00:11:37.55\00:11:39.44 This could be, now, 00:11:39.47\00:11:40.87 here's two different ways of thinking of this, 00:11:40.90\00:11:43.63 made alive by the spirit. 00:11:43.66\00:11:45.03 What spirit are we talking about here? 00:11:45.06\00:11:46.44 The Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit. All right. 00:11:46.47\00:11:47.84 So this is God through the Holy Spirit 00:11:47.87\00:11:49.83 raising Christ to life. Okay. 00:11:49.86\00:11:51.94 If we say, He's made alive in the spirit. 00:11:51.97\00:11:56.41 No, people start to say, "what do you mean by that." 00:11:56.44\00:12:00.35 Well, there's two different ways you could go even in that path. 00:12:00.38\00:12:03.38 You could say, in the spirit means, 00:12:03.41\00:12:06.27 as a spiritual being, you know, he was like 00:12:06.30\00:12:09.77 not a physical being anymore, he was a spiritual being, 00:12:09.80\00:12:13.21 just a spirit or you could say in the spiritual realm. 00:12:13.24\00:12:18.55 So made alive is in the flesh 00:12:18.58\00:12:21.74 and then he is in the spiritual realm. 00:12:21.77\00:12:23.25 He is in the world here and then he is in the world 00:12:23.28\00:12:26.92 of the spiritual realm afterwards. 00:12:26.95\00:12:28.50 So either way it's-- we do have lots of testimony 00:12:28.53\00:12:33.78 in the New Testament that when Jesus rose from the dead, 00:12:33.81\00:12:36.05 He was a physical being. 00:12:36.08\00:12:38.83 He was changed, but he was a physical being 00:12:38.86\00:12:41.12 and they recognized who He was. 00:12:41.15\00:12:43.35 Thomas didn't believe, you know, and Jesus says, 00:12:43.38\00:12:45.98 "Come and bring your finger here and see my hands 00:12:46.01\00:12:49.36 and put your hand in my side and see that I'm real." 00:12:49.39\00:12:52.25 He ate food in front of them, 00:12:52.28\00:12:53.71 He talked with them, He was a physical being. 00:12:53.74\00:12:56.46 So to say He was simply a spiritual being 00:12:56.49\00:12:59.19 probably doesn't cut it, you know. 00:12:59.22\00:13:00.73 So either we have to say He's made alive 00:13:00.76\00:13:02.86 by the spirit, that is by the Holy Spirit. 00:13:02.89\00:13:04.96 Or we have to say, He's made alive 00:13:04.99\00:13:07.25 in the spiritual realm, in this spirit world 00:13:07.28\00:13:11.69 where there are spiritual powers and spiritual forces, 00:13:11.72\00:13:15.04 such as the Apostle Paul talks about 00:13:15.07\00:13:17.18 our battle that's not against flesh and blood 00:13:17.21\00:13:19.19 but against spiritual powers in heavenly places. 00:13:19.22\00:13:22.44 So Christ is raised from the dead 00:13:22.47\00:13:25.53 and this is the setting in which he says. 00:13:25.56\00:13:28.61 So we're already-- we can clearly see here, 00:13:28.64\00:13:30.65 we have Christ suffered, 00:13:30.68\00:13:32.89 He died on the cross and He rose again. 00:13:32.92\00:13:35.54 It sounds like the gospel story, 00:13:35.57\00:13:37.57 just the way that the pattern has gone on. 00:13:37.60\00:13:39.40 And over and over, the New Testament 00:13:39.43\00:13:40.82 presents this idea about the resurrection. 00:13:40.85\00:13:43.10 Well, we're just diving into verse 18, 19, 20, 21, 22. 00:13:43.13\00:13:49.09 So we'll come back to this after a break 00:13:49.12\00:13:50.93 and look some more about these fascinating verses 00:13:50.96\00:13:54.31 and try to decipher 00:13:54.34\00:13:55.78 just exactly what Peter is trying to tell us. 00:13:55.81\00:13:57.77
