And we're back. Thank you for joining us. 00:00:01.40\00:00:02.77 We are in 1 Peter Chapter 3 00:00:02.80\00:00:05.41 and right now we are in verse 15. 00:00:05.44\00:00:09.02 And we're also here with Dr. Shepherd. 00:00:09.05\00:00:12.05 Dr. Shepherd, in verse 15 it starts, 00:00:12.08\00:00:14.60 "But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts." 00:00:14.63\00:00:18.50 What does this mean? All right. 00:00:18.53\00:00:20.57 Well, we'll look at this idea of sanctify, 00:00:20.60\00:00:23.19 but I want to notice an interesting 00:00:23.22\00:00:25.79 variation between our two versions. 00:00:25.82\00:00:28.03 You're using the New King James. 00:00:28.06\00:00:29.43 I've got the English Standard Version here. 00:00:29.46\00:00:32.11 And in the English Standard Version, 00:00:32.14\00:00:34.06 in verse 15 it says, 00:00:34.09\00:00:35.95 "but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, 00:00:35.98\00:00:40.68 always being prepared to make a defense to anyone 00:00:40.71\00:00:42.84 who asks a reason for the hope that is in you." 00:00:42.87\00:00:48.74 There are many manuscripts of the New Testament. 00:00:48.77\00:00:51.61 We're greatly blessed, thousands of them, 00:00:51.64\00:00:54.56 thousands of manuscripts 00:00:54.59\00:00:55.96 of the New Testament from the ancient world. 00:00:55.99\00:00:58.19 No two of them exactly agree with one another. 00:00:58.22\00:01:00.49 They are this little variants, you know. 00:01:00.52\00:01:02.10 There'll be a the here or there'll be a comma-- 00:01:02.13\00:01:04.62 not commas but, you know, a phrase here is put in another. 00:01:04.65\00:01:08.17 So there's always variants and scholars look 00:01:08.20\00:01:10.94 very carefully to try to figure out. 00:01:10.97\00:01:12.96 Okay, so which one probably 00:01:12.99\00:01:15.01 has the original reading that we're looking for. 00:01:15.04\00:01:18.28 And they have a whole series of rules 00:01:18.31\00:01:19.77 that they use to do this. 00:01:19.80\00:01:21.70 But we can just illustrate a little bit in this. 00:01:21.73\00:01:25.12 The apostle is actually quoting from Isaiah, right? 00:01:25.15\00:01:29.39 And we noticed back in Isaiah 8, 00:01:29.42\00:01:34.83 it says in verse 13. 00:01:34.86\00:01:39.49 Isaiah 8:13. You want to read that verse? 00:01:39.52\00:01:41.84 "The Lord of hosts, Him you shall hallow; 00:01:41.87\00:01:44.61 Let Him be your fear, And let Him be your dread." 00:01:44.64\00:01:48.11 Okay, so you're supposed to hallow the Lord God, all right? 00:01:48.14\00:01:52.17 The Lord of hosts is the one that you're supposed to hallow. 00:01:52.20\00:01:54.87 Okay. And over here in 1 Peter, 00:01:54.90\00:01:58.34 it says, "You are to honor 00:01:58.37\00:02:00.52 or you are to hallow or to sanctify the Lord." 00:02:00.55\00:02:05.94 And some manuscripts not the oldest and the, 00:02:05.97\00:02:10.21 you know, the strongest ones, say the Lord God, 00:02:10.24\00:02:13.36 because they're probably 00:02:13.39\00:02:14.76 conforming it to the text of Isaiah. 00:02:14.79\00:02:16.72 That would be the tendency that scribes would have this. 00:02:16.75\00:02:19.21 Oh, yes, he's misquoting the text. 00:02:19.24\00:02:20.61 And then they make a correction, you see. 00:02:20.64\00:02:22.78 When actually probably what Peter said 00:02:22.81\00:02:25.01 was that you should sanctify Christ as Lord in your heart. 00:02:25.04\00:02:29.28 And the term Lord in the New Testament 00:02:29.31\00:02:31.30 often refers to the Lord Jesus. 00:02:31.33\00:02:33.35 And so he's quoting Isaiah but he's taking 00:02:33.38\00:02:36.99 those terminologies that apply to Yahweh, 00:02:37.02\00:02:39.38 to Jehovah of the Old Testament 00:02:39.41\00:02:41.30 and he's applying this now to Jesus. 00:02:41.33\00:02:43.46 So when he says sanctify or honor 00:02:43.49\00:02:48.91 this is the word to make holy. 00:02:48.94\00:02:50.81 It is to consecrate, to set apart, 00:02:50.84\00:02:53.25 to venerate. Okay? 00:02:53.28\00:02:55.26 So Christ has already been noted in 1 Peter 00:02:55.29\00:02:59.17 to be the lamb without spot and blemish. 00:02:59.20\00:03:02.08 He's been lifted up very high in Peter. 00:03:02.11\00:03:04.72 And that is the designation that God has given him 00:03:04.75\00:03:08.32 in history as the spotless lamb and as the resurrected Lord. 00:03:08.35\00:03:13.91 Now the Christian is called on to recognize this 00:03:13.94\00:03:17.34 and to affirm it in their heart and in their mind. 00:03:17.37\00:03:21.62 It's an action that you take to recognize the truth 00:03:21.65\00:03:24.86 about Christ, that God has set forth 00:03:24.89\00:03:29.30 and in relationship to the world who has rejected Him, 00:03:29.33\00:03:32.78 you are standing and affirming what God has said. Okay? 00:03:32.81\00:03:36.22 Going back to that idea of listening 00:03:36.25\00:03:39.11 to what God's viewpoint is and His values are. 00:03:39.14\00:03:42.38 So we set Him apart as Lord in our hearts. 00:03:42.41\00:03:46.02 That's where it starts. 00:03:46.05\00:03:47.79 Before you give any witness to people on the outside, 00:03:47.82\00:03:51.32 you have to have the witness on the inside. 00:03:51.35\00:03:53.82 You have to have the personal experience, 00:03:53.85\00:03:56.14 a personal acknowledgment that Christ is Lord 00:03:56.17\00:03:59.59 that He belongs to you, that you are His and He is yours. 00:03:59.62\00:04:04.71 Unlike the world around us we do not recognize 00:04:04.74\00:04:07.77 their valuation of Christ. 00:04:07.80\00:04:09.26 Remember, he was to them the rejected stone. 00:04:09.29\00:04:12.79 But we don't feel what they feel. 00:04:12.82\00:04:15.21 We're not gonna go in with their intimidation. 00:04:15.24\00:04:17.84 Our primary group is God. 00:04:17.87\00:04:20.53 We are listening to His value system. 00:04:20.56\00:04:22.38 We're conscious of that. We value what He values. 00:04:22.41\00:04:25.67 I like verse 15 where it talks about giving a defense. 00:04:25.70\00:04:29.59 Does this have anything to do with witnessing 00:04:29.62\00:04:31.97 and defense to everyone who asks of the hope that is in us? 00:04:32.00\00:04:35.55 Yeah, it's a very interesting word. 00:04:35.58\00:04:37.84 The Greek word is apologia 00:04:37.87\00:04:40.33 from which we get the word apology. 00:04:40.36\00:04:42.97 And today we say, did you apologize? 00:04:43.00\00:04:48.11 Did you-- we take it as saying 00:04:48.14\00:04:51.43 you're sorry for something, you know. 00:04:51.46\00:04:53.10 Almost sounds like being sorry for the hope that is in me? 00:04:53.13\00:04:55.95 Yeah, yeah, and that's not what it means. 00:04:55.98\00:04:57.97 That's not what it means at all, no. 00:04:58.00\00:05:00.46 The word apology here is to give a defense. 00:05:00.49\00:05:04.35 We have another phrase or word in English, 00:05:04.38\00:05:06.85 we call it apologetics. 00:05:06.88\00:05:09.12 This is when you give a defense of the faith, 00:05:09.15\00:05:12.80 where you show that God's message is logical 00:05:12.83\00:05:17.40 that it's in line with reason in reality 00:05:17.43\00:05:20.77 and that you should trust it. 00:05:20.80\00:05:22.17 So an apologia in the ancient world, 00:05:22.20\00:05:26.07 you would defend yourself when you were accused of something. 00:05:26.10\00:05:30.02 But it's kind of clear here that, 00:05:30.05\00:05:32.52 that there's more than just people 00:05:32.55\00:05:35.29 who are attacking you that are in mind. 00:05:35.32\00:05:38.56 These are people who are enquiring 'cause he says, 00:05:38.59\00:05:44.81 it's like they're curious about you. 00:05:44.84\00:05:47.13 You know, they, they notice 00:05:47.16\00:05:50.06 who you are being prepared to make a defense to anyone 00:05:50.09\00:05:53.94 who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you. 00:05:53.97\00:05:57.60 I believe in witnessing to people. 00:06:00.67\00:06:04.15 And people are taught how to witness. 00:06:04.18\00:06:07.46 Many are not taught how to witness. 00:06:07.49\00:06:10.04 And there's an old story about the dentist 00:06:10.07\00:06:14.70 who decided that he really should share his faith 00:06:14.73\00:06:19.23 and he wasn't quite sure how to do it 00:06:19.26\00:06:21.53 but he knew it was all about, you know, 00:06:21.56\00:06:23.29 getting ready for heaven and being ready for dying and. 00:06:23.32\00:06:27.40 So, you know, he got the guy in the chair 00:06:27.43\00:06:29.91 and he was about to give him the-- 00:06:29.94\00:06:34.10 he was about to give him the shot of Novocain 00:06:34.13\00:06:36.74 and he leaned over him and he said to him, 00:06:36.77\00:06:38.89 "Are you ready to die?" 00:06:38.92\00:06:40.36 That's the wrong way to witness. 00:06:43.49\00:06:45.14 You know, verse 15 does say with meekness and fear. 00:06:45.17\00:06:49.29 Yeah. How to win this-- 00:06:49.32\00:06:50.69 Yeah, with gentleness and fear in a reverent way 00:06:50.72\00:06:52.45 that you're supposed to do it. So that's not-- 00:06:52.48\00:06:54.35 the dentist, sorry to any dentist out there. 00:06:54.38\00:06:57.51 I'm sure that this was just may be a made up story. The-- 00:06:57.54\00:07:02.18 So there must be apparently a tactical way to win this-- 00:07:02.21\00:07:05.25 Not just meekness and fear but also a way 00:07:05.28\00:07:10.01 that we can actually reach to certain people. 00:07:10.04\00:07:11.68 And the same way does not always apply 00:07:11.71\00:07:14.11 to all the people, is that right? 00:07:14.14\00:07:16.44 A very useful way to witness to people 00:07:16.47\00:07:18.78 is what has been called by some, tagging. 00:07:18.81\00:07:22.48 You know, when we were kids we played tag. 00:07:22.51\00:07:24.94 I touch you and tag, you're it and then you chase me, 00:07:24.97\00:07:27.27 you know, and then you tag somebody else 00:07:27.30\00:07:29.53 that kind of thing. Yeah. 00:07:29.56\00:07:31.73 Tagging and witnessing is a very low key-- 00:07:31.76\00:07:35.65 I found it's actually 00:07:35.68\00:07:37.55 a very delightful way to witness to people. 00:07:37.58\00:07:40.34 And here's how it works. 00:07:40.37\00:07:41.74 When you meet somebody you just start talking to them 00:07:41.77\00:07:44.59 because you, you know, you're in the same place 00:07:44.62\00:07:47.03 and you start to get acquainted with them. 00:07:47.06\00:07:49.47 You ask them questions about who they are 00:07:49.50\00:07:51.54 and they start to talk and most people love to talk 00:07:51.57\00:07:54.86 about themselves and tell you, you know, what they are. 00:07:54.89\00:07:57.85 You can affirm them along the way, 00:07:57.88\00:07:59.29 "That's really interesting. That must be-- 00:07:59.32\00:08:00.69 you're going to see your grand children, that's really nice." 00:08:00.72\00:08:03.15 And they'll show you pictures, you know, and everything. 00:08:03.18\00:08:05.87 And somewhere in the conversation 00:08:05.90\00:08:09.28 you mention something about yourself 00:08:09.31\00:08:11.31 that deals with your spiritual life. Okay. 00:08:11.34\00:08:15.22 You mention something in the conversation that deals 00:08:15.25\00:08:17.44 with your spiritual life, it should be natural. 00:08:17.47\00:08:19.32 It shouldn't be, you know, out of the ordinary or something. 00:08:19.35\00:08:22.82 "Let me change the subject," you know, it's not like that. 00:08:22.85\00:08:25.45 It's something that fits right into it, you know. 00:08:25.48\00:08:27.36 Like you might say, "Our pastor was just talking 00:08:27.39\00:08:29.93 about that in church last week." 00:08:29.96\00:08:31.60 So that just gives me the assumption 00:08:31.63\00:08:34.10 that you go to church? Yeah. 00:08:34.13\00:08:36.12 Or for me it's very natural because they say, 00:08:36.15\00:08:38.19 "Well, what do you do?" 00:08:38.22\00:08:39.59 "I'm a teacher." "Oh, what do you teach?" 00:08:39.62\00:08:40.99 "I teach the New Testament. I teach the Bible." 00:08:41.02\00:08:43.27 I've just said that I'm a spiritual person. 00:08:43.30\00:08:45.80 Now I've tagged them. 00:08:45.83\00:08:47.53 Now the question is what they will do with that tag? 00:08:47.56\00:08:50.10 If they lean over and they say, 00:08:50.13\00:08:51.50 "Really? That's really interesting." 00:08:51.53\00:08:54.71 Now they have said that they want to talk 00:08:54.74\00:08:56.68 about spiritual things, you see? 00:08:56.71\00:08:59.25 But if they say, "Oh, 00:08:59.28\00:09:02.49 what was the temperature at the North Pole today? 00:09:02.52\00:09:04.38 Do you know what it is?" 00:09:04.41\00:09:06.32 Then they obviously don't want to do that. 00:09:06.35\00:09:08.16 Now they don't want to go there. 00:09:08.19\00:09:09.56 So I'm not gonna, you know, push it on them, no. 00:09:09.59\00:09:13.13 I'm at the place of mine. 00:09:13.16\00:09:14.53 I guess I'm kind of this outgoing guy or something. 00:09:14.56\00:09:16.98 I'm not at the place in my life where I will. 00:09:17.01\00:09:19.17 I will tag them more than once. 00:09:19.20\00:09:20.88 I'm not gonna let them just go often to the dark easily. 00:09:20.91\00:09:24.63 But I'm not gonna force it on them. 00:09:24.66\00:09:26.53 And I've had amazing conversations with people. 00:09:26.56\00:09:29.64 I had a conversation with a fellow. 00:09:29.67\00:09:31.04 I was flying to professional meetings 00:09:31.07\00:09:33.03 and he was a fellow who makes videos. 00:09:33.06\00:09:35.64 He was going to the same city to-- 00:09:35.67\00:09:37.44 he makes this kind of videos of pictures 00:09:37.47\00:09:39.46 that you're flying over mars, you know, and things like that. 00:09:39.49\00:09:42.69 And we just started talking about our life 00:09:42.72\00:09:44.72 and he was been away from his children and everything 00:09:44.75\00:09:46.78 and you miss them and things like that. 00:09:46.81\00:09:49.86 And, oh, it's such a busy life and everything. 00:09:49.89\00:09:52.53 And I said, "Well, I have something in my experience that, 00:09:52.56\00:09:56.76 you know, really helps me to stop." 00:09:56.79\00:09:59.38 I told him about the Sabbath of all things, you know. 00:09:59.41\00:10:02.36 It came out naturally. 00:10:02.39\00:10:03.78 It wasn't like, I need to tell, you know. 00:10:03.81\00:10:06.81 It wasn't like he was this deep spiritual person or something. 00:10:06.84\00:10:11.19 But it was just a natural linkage. 00:10:11.22\00:10:13.22 All these natural linkages are everywhere around us. 00:10:13.25\00:10:16.62 And he says, you're supposed to do it gently 00:10:16.65\00:10:18.77 and with fear, with reverence, remember focused on God. 00:10:18.80\00:10:22.03 Interestingly enough, the phrase gentle 00:10:22.06\00:10:23.99 and with fear are the two same concepts 00:10:24.02\00:10:28.28 that he talked about the wives in Chapter 3, 00:10:28.31\00:10:32.91 that she has the reverence, spirit, 00:10:32.94\00:10:35.61 and she has a gentle spirit. First Peter 3: 2, 4. 00:10:35.64\00:10:40.03 So it's not as though these only apply to women. 00:10:40.06\00:10:44.74 Or another way we could say it is that the wives 00:10:44.77\00:10:49.15 are an example to the whole church. 00:10:49.18\00:10:52.29 In verse 16 here we see that Peter seems to return 00:10:52.32\00:10:55.68 to the negative possibilities. 00:10:55.71\00:10:58.73 Yes, he returns to negative possibilities 00:10:58.76\00:11:01.60 but not without discussing these three ideas, 00:11:01.63\00:11:05.67 these three ideas, the gentle spirit. 00:11:05.70\00:11:07.72 There's no need to be harsh when you're sharing your faith, 00:11:07.75\00:11:10.73 the reverent fear that is reverence for God, 00:11:10.76\00:11:13.63 God mindedness, dependant on God, 00:11:13.66\00:11:15.87 respect for His view of things. 00:11:15.90\00:11:17.56 And then he talks about this good conscience 00:11:17.59\00:11:19.68 that we talked about before that is a conscience 00:11:19.71\00:11:23.43 that is the more consciousness of God 00:11:23.46\00:11:26.26 as the primary value system. 00:11:26.29\00:11:28.68 Peter speaks of the opponents who speak badly 00:11:28.71\00:11:30.81 about the Christians, being put to shame. 00:11:30.84\00:11:34.62 Well, when will they be put to shame? 00:11:34.65\00:11:36.93 Well, it could be in the marketplace of ideas 00:11:36.96\00:11:38.84 because he just kind of described 00:11:38.87\00:11:40.24 that kind of thing at other times. 00:11:40.27\00:11:42.09 But this is probably talking about the judgment to come. 00:11:42.12\00:11:45.06 Verse 17 it says that, 00:11:45.09\00:11:47.10 "It is better if it is the will of God 00:11:47.13\00:11:48.87 to suffer for doing good than doing evil." 00:11:48.90\00:11:51.05 Is it God's will for me to suffer? 00:11:51.08\00:11:53.31 I think many people might be asking that question. 00:11:53.34\00:11:55.06 Yes. The answer is no. 00:11:55.09\00:11:57.75 It is not God's will for suffering. 00:11:57.78\00:11:59.77 God is not sadistic God just, you know, 00:11:59.80\00:12:03.92 trying to put on the screws here and see what will happen. 00:12:03.95\00:12:07.95 He puts-- if we take out the phrase, 00:12:07.98\00:12:10.64 if it is the will of God, is not the central sentence 00:12:10.67\00:12:13.86 that's been used here, okay. 00:12:13.89\00:12:15.27 The central sentence says, it is better to do good 00:12:15.30\00:12:18.96 and suffer than to do bad. 00:12:18.99\00:12:22.96 Okay, it is better to do good and suffer than to do bad. 00:12:22.99\00:12:25.52 We've already talked about the will of God earlier 00:12:25.55\00:12:27.59 in these passages in 1 Peter. 00:12:27.62\00:12:30.20 And what is the will of God? 00:12:30.23\00:12:32.03 The will of God is that we should do good 00:12:32.06\00:12:34.71 and we should eschew evil. 00:12:34.74\00:12:36.11 That is we should stay away from that which is evil. 00:12:36.14\00:12:38.83 So He says, if it should be the will of God, okay, 00:12:38.86\00:12:42.81 this is unjust suffering that's gonna come on the Christian. 00:12:42.84\00:12:45.76 They're doing good and they're still suffering. 00:12:45.79\00:12:48.39 So God's will in such innocent suffering 00:12:48.42\00:12:51.93 is that you should still go through it. 00:12:51.96\00:12:54.90 God is not imposing the suffering. 00:12:54.93\00:12:56.86 God is calling you to the good and when you do what is good 00:12:56.89\00:12:59.75 and you suffer, God will come to your aid 00:12:59.78\00:13:01.99 in the end and He will protect you 00:13:02.02\00:13:04.06 and overcome those who are trying to crush you. 00:13:04.09\00:13:09.55 Well, thank you, Dr. Shepherd. 00:13:09.58\00:13:11.18 We are studying the Books of 1 and 2 Peter. 00:13:11.21\00:13:14.33 And Dr. Shepherd, I just want to give you the final thought. 00:13:14.36\00:13:17.19 May be someone is suffering 00:13:17.22\00:13:18.59 you want to give them words of encouragement to them? 00:13:18.62\00:13:20.64 I know that suffering is like a fog that encompasses you. 00:13:23.05\00:13:27.32 Don't give up. God is smiling at you even now. 00:13:27.35\00:13:30.40 He's caring for you. 00:13:30.43\00:13:32.11 Read the scripture and find His grace. 00:13:32.14\00:13:34.11 He'll carry you through. 00:13:34.14\00:13:36.49
