Hello, and welcome to "Books of the Book." 00:00:22.00\00:00:24.54 Have you ever felt unjustly treated for doing what's right? 00:00:24.57\00:00:27.63 What do you do about it? 00:00:27.66\00:00:29.03 Well, on today's program we're gonna talk about this, 00:00:29.06\00:00:32.61 sharing from the books of Peter. 00:00:32.64\00:00:34.67 And with me is Dr. Tom Shepherd. 00:00:34.70\00:00:36.33 He will be guiding us through this study today. 00:00:36.36\00:00:39.30 Dr. Shepherd, welcome back. Thank you. 00:00:39.33\00:00:41.00 We have been studying now the Book of 1 Peter. 00:00:41.03\00:00:44.54 We are in Chapter 3 and we are picking up on verse 13, 00:00:44.57\00:00:47.85 is that right? That is correct. 00:00:47.88\00:00:49.77 And this section seems to begin with a question, 00:00:49.80\00:00:52.60 why don't we read it? 00:00:52.63\00:00:54.00 Yeah, I think let's start with, 00:00:54.03\00:00:56.15 we're gonna be studying a longer section. 00:00:56.18\00:00:59.15 It's all tied together actually. 00:00:59.18\00:01:01.29 It's 1 Peter 3:13-22. Okay. 00:01:01.32\00:01:07.36 But it kind of breaks into two sections, 00:01:07.39\00:01:10.15 so in this time together, 00:01:10.18\00:01:12.67 we're gonna look at verses 13-17. 00:01:12.70\00:01:15.75 And then next time we'll look at verses 18-22. 00:01:15.78\00:01:19.28 There are some rather big questions 00:01:19.31\00:01:21.60 in this section of Peter. 00:01:21.63\00:01:23.00 Lot of people have many questions 00:01:23.03\00:01:26.80 about what Peter says here. 00:01:26.83\00:01:28.20 But we'll find out that it all fits together 00:01:28.23\00:01:30.61 quite logically and has got a great message for us. 00:01:30.64\00:01:35.06 So we should read verses 13-17. Okay. 00:01:35.09\00:01:40.10 "And who is he who will harm you 00:01:40.13\00:01:42.03 if you become followers of what is good? 00:01:42.06\00:01:45.71 But even if you should suffer 00:01:45.74\00:01:47.11 for righteousness' sake, you are blessed. 00:01:47.14\00:01:49.34 And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled. 00:01:49.37\00:01:52.54 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, 00:01:52.57\00:01:54.96 and always be ready to give a defense to everyone 00:01:54.99\00:01:57.63 who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, 00:01:57.66\00:02:02.33 with meekness and fear, having a good conscience, 00:02:02.36\00:02:05.04 that when they defame you as evildoers, 00:02:05.07\00:02:07.92 those who revile your good conduct 00:02:07.95\00:02:10.18 in Christ may be ashamed. 00:02:10.21\00:02:12.25 For it is better, if it is the will of God, 00:02:12.28\00:02:14.87 to suffer for doing good than for doing evil." Okay. 00:02:14.90\00:02:19.88 So indeed verse 13 begins with a question. 00:02:19.91\00:02:23.95 Yeah, and it's an unusual question. 00:02:23.98\00:02:25.91 I mean, maybe in other contexts it might not be unusual. 00:02:25.94\00:02:30.76 But in the way that Peter has been emphasizing 00:02:30.79\00:02:33.51 the concept of suffering and Christians being persecuted 00:02:33.54\00:02:36.85 and, you know, the outsiders 00:02:36.88\00:02:38.46 reviling them and punishing them. 00:02:38.49\00:02:40.03 And we just talked about that last time. 00:02:40.06\00:02:43.48 Here he starts this question in verse 13. 00:02:43.51\00:02:46.37 Now who is there to harm you, 00:02:46.40\00:02:48.19 if you are zealous for what is good? 00:02:48.22\00:02:51.41 You think, like, 00:02:51.44\00:02:53.07 "Well, all the people you've been talking about, 00:02:53.10\00:02:55.68 all the people that are outside the church 00:02:55.71\00:02:57.65 that are pushing in on us and trying to persecute us." 00:02:57.68\00:03:00.99 Why would he start with a question that is, 00:03:01.02\00:03:04.90 you know, so odd in that kind of sense? 00:03:04.93\00:03:08.64 So this is very interesting that he starts 00:03:08.67\00:03:14.09 with such a positive view, you know, 00:03:14.12\00:03:16.66 who is gonna do you wrong 00:03:16.69\00:03:18.06 if you're zealous for doing what's right? 00:03:18.09\00:03:21.08 But there is a parallel in our book and it's in Chapter 2. 00:03:21.11\00:03:28.02 It seems parallel to his expectation 00:03:29.81\00:03:32.48 regarding government officials. 00:03:32.51\00:03:34.45 So let's read 2:14 again so we just get that context. 00:03:34.48\00:03:39.40 What did Peter say about government officials? 00:03:39.43\00:03:42.28 What were they supposed to do? 00:03:42.31\00:03:44.68 Okay, verse 14. Yeah, 2:14. 00:03:44.71\00:03:47.23 "Or to governors, as to those who are sent by him 00:03:47.26\00:03:50.62 for the punishment of evildoers 00:03:50.65\00:03:52.68 and for the praise of those who do good." 00:03:52.71\00:03:56.36 All right. So what were 00:03:56.39\00:03:57.81 the government officials supposed to do? 00:03:57.84\00:04:00.43 Good? They were supposed to-- 00:04:00.46\00:04:02.24 well, there are two things actually. 00:04:02.27\00:04:04.87 Okay, they are supposed to praise be-- 00:04:04.90\00:04:09.72 they are supposed to praise those who do good. 00:04:09.75\00:04:11.19 Yes, praise those who do good 00:04:11.22\00:04:12.59 and punish those who do bad. Okay. 00:04:12.62\00:04:15.89 Right, so they have these two rolls they're supposed to have. 00:04:15.92\00:04:18.91 So it's as though Peter is describing 00:04:18.94\00:04:22.80 that same scene and he has that same expectation 00:04:22.83\00:04:26.70 and he says in our verse, who is there to harm you, 00:04:26.73\00:04:31.37 you know, to punish you, 00:04:31.40\00:04:33.42 if you are zealous for what is good? 00:04:33.45\00:04:36.39 It's almost as though he picked up where he left off in 2:14. 00:04:36.42\00:04:39.94 Of course, he's put a whole lot of stuff in between there, 00:04:39.97\00:04:42.35 but he is giving a picture 00:04:42.38\00:04:46.09 that God as the moral arbiter of the world has set 00:04:46.12\00:04:51.84 standards of what is right and what is wrong. 00:04:51.87\00:04:55.74 And the government officials, remember 00:04:55.77\00:04:57.14 who are in middle management, they are subordinate to God. 00:04:57.17\00:05:00.12 God is the super ordinate power. 00:05:00.15\00:05:03.01 They are the middle management, 00:05:03.04\00:05:05.24 and there are subordinate people. 00:05:05.27\00:05:06.64 But they have a certain role that God has set. 00:05:06.67\00:05:09.88 And so Peter has, he asked this question 00:05:09.91\00:05:12.52 within that expectation that those who were given 00:05:12.55\00:05:16.23 the responsibility to affirm what is right 00:05:16.26\00:05:18.79 and to punish what is wrong should do their duty. 00:05:18.82\00:05:21.53 And when you do good, they should recognize it. 00:05:21.56\00:05:25.48 Now we know of course that, that's not always the case. 00:05:25.51\00:05:28.51 That's not always what happens. 00:05:28.54\00:05:30.48 But again there is right and there is wrong. 00:05:30.51\00:05:34.13 There is this moral sense 00:05:34.16\00:05:37.19 and really most people in the world, 00:05:37.22\00:05:39.68 we sometimes get a little cynical about this. 00:05:39.71\00:05:42.49 But most people in the world 00:05:42.52\00:05:44.95 recognize these ideas of right and wrong. 00:05:44.98\00:05:48.62 That's why newspapers get sold because newspapers, 00:05:48.65\00:05:54.22 the news is all about when people do it wrong, you know. 00:05:54.25\00:05:58.17 There will be a news article that says, scandal, 00:05:58.20\00:06:02.03 you know, senator, mayor or somebody 00:06:02.06\00:06:05.04 has affair with somebody, you know. 00:06:05.07\00:06:07.44 You don't see a newspaper article that says, 00:06:07.47\00:06:10.77 "Man is faithful to his wife. 00:06:10.80\00:06:13.79 World takes note, you know, what I mean. 00:06:13.82\00:06:15.48 Now if he's been faithful to his wife for 40 years or something. 00:06:15.51\00:06:18.88 But we expect people to do what is right. 00:06:18.91\00:06:21.93 And so that's where this question comes from. 00:06:21.96\00:06:25.35 But in verse 14, Peter seems to reverse? 00:06:25.38\00:06:28.76 Yeah, well, not really. 00:06:28.79\00:06:31.27 He gives a conditional statement. 00:06:31.30\00:06:34.06 I notice yours read a little differently than mine. 00:06:34.09\00:06:36.12 Would you read verse 14 again? 00:06:36.15\00:06:38.25 "But even if you should suffer 00:06:38.28\00:06:39.65 for righteousness' sake, you are blessed. 00:06:39.68\00:06:42.07 And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled." 00:06:42.10\00:06:45.54 Okay, that is very much similar to mine. 00:06:45.57\00:06:47.29 It says even if you should suffer, 00:06:47.32\00:06:50.40 it doesn't have to be this way. 00:06:50.43\00:06:53.00 But even if you should, 00:06:53.03\00:06:54.41 even if something should go wrong and you do suffer 00:06:54.44\00:06:59.70 okay, what could happen? 00:06:59.73\00:07:02.11 All right, suffering for the sake 00:07:02.14\00:07:03.71 of righteousness is what he's talking about. 00:07:03.74\00:07:06.29 And then he says what the result is. 00:07:06.32\00:07:08.99 He says, you will be blessed. 00:07:09.02\00:07:11.68 Now the question is, where did he get 00:07:11.71\00:07:13.55 that idea that you'd be blessed by suffering. 00:07:13.58\00:07:17.80 Well, we think of Matthew 5:11 in the Beatitudes. 00:07:17.83\00:07:21.46 We should read that text. Matthew 5:11. 00:07:21.49\00:07:25.04 The words of Jesus, the timeless words of Jesus. 00:07:25.07\00:07:31.77 Okay, Matthew 5. Matthew 5:11. 00:07:31.80\00:07:34.94 This is at the end of the Beatitudes. 00:07:34.97\00:07:37.66 "Blessed are you when they revile 00:07:37.69\00:07:39.65 and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil 00:07:39.68\00:07:42.32 against you falsely for My sake." 00:07:42.35\00:07:44.94 Read verse 12 as well. 00:07:44.97\00:07:46.38 "Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad, 00:07:46.41\00:07:48.72 for great is your reward in heaven, 00:07:48.75\00:07:51.10 for so they persecuted the prophets who were with you." 00:07:51.13\00:07:55.23 You're blessed when you're persecuted 00:07:55.26\00:07:56.87 for righteousness sake. 00:07:56.90\00:07:59.67 Is the blessing found in the persecution itself? 00:07:59.70\00:08:02.64 "Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you, 00:08:05.46\00:08:07.83 and utter all manner of evil words against you falsely, no. 00:08:07.86\00:08:11.64 Rejoice and be glad, why should you rejoice? 00:08:11.67\00:08:13.89 For your reward is great in heaven. 00:08:13.92\00:08:17.56 God has something planned better for you. 00:08:17.59\00:08:20.15 He's going to set things right. 00:08:20.18\00:08:22.05 He's going to bring things back to proper balance, you see. 00:08:22.08\00:08:26.85 The challenge of the Christian is to ever remember 00:08:28.31\00:08:33.84 that our citizenship is in heaven. 00:08:33.87\00:08:36.69 God is the leader of our life and that the world's view 00:08:36.72\00:08:43.25 is just about exactly opposite of what God's view is. 00:08:43.28\00:08:47.59 What the world values, God depreciates. 00:08:47.62\00:08:50.18 What the world depreciates, God values. 00:08:50.21\00:08:52.95 Actually this is a fairly common 00:08:52.98\00:08:55.05 kind of theme in the New Testament. 00:08:55.08\00:08:57.17 Once look through this and it maintains that there's about 40, 00:08:57.20\00:09:03.12 40 such blessings that are found throughout 00:09:03.15\00:09:06.24 the New Testament over and over, 00:09:06.27\00:09:08.12 challenging the typical view of the world. 00:09:08.15\00:09:12.29 The world's view is, you know, get all the money that you can, 00:09:12.32\00:09:15.90 get all the fame that you can, get to the highest place 00:09:15.93\00:09:20.00 that you can because that's when you'll really be happy. 00:09:20.03\00:09:23.51 And Jesus says, "No, it's not. 00:09:23.54\00:09:27.12 It's when you bless those who curse you. 00:09:27.15\00:09:30.28 It's when you're meek and humble. 00:09:30.31\00:09:31.73 It's when you seek after righteousness. 00:09:31.76\00:09:33.96 It's when you're pure in heart. 00:09:33.99\00:09:35.62 These are the things that make you blessed. 00:09:35.65\00:09:37.67 This is what gives you a full life." 00:09:37.70\00:09:40.06 As he said, you know, the sum of a person's life 00:09:40.09\00:09:43.52 is not found in the number of possessions that they have. 00:09:43.55\00:09:47.10 You know, life is much more than that. Okay? 00:09:47.13\00:09:50.91 Now the last part of the verse, of verse 14 has a quotation. 00:09:50.94\00:09:57.23 It's kind of just slipped in there 00:09:57.26\00:09:58.63 but it's a quotation from Isaiah Chapter 8. 00:09:58.66\00:10:02.35 So let's read the context of Isaiah 8 to kind of see this, 00:10:02.38\00:10:08.11 but he is actually quoted Isaiah before--in Isaiah 8 as well. 00:10:08.14\00:10:13.44 We want to read Isaiah 8:5-15. 00:10:13.47\00:10:16.08 But we'll see that he's quoted part of this before. 00:10:16.11\00:10:18.61 Isaiah is one of his favorite books to quote. 00:10:18.64\00:10:21.44 He quotes Isaiah. 00:10:21.47\00:10:22.84 He quotes Psalms and he quotes Proverbs. 00:10:22.87\00:10:24.62 It seems like more than 00:10:24.65\00:10:26.02 almost anything else in this Book of 1 Peter. 00:10:26.05\00:10:28.37 Okay, beginning in verse 5. 00:10:28.40\00:10:31.23 "The Lord also spoke to me again, 00:10:31.26\00:10:33.80 saying "Inasmuch as the people refused 00:10:33.83\00:10:36.12 The waters of Shiloah that flow softly, 00:10:36.15\00:10:39.87 And rejoice in Rezin and in Remaliah's son. 00:10:39.90\00:10:43.82 Now therefore, behold, the Lord brings up over them 00:10:43.85\00:10:47.54 The waters of the River, strong and mighty-- 00:10:47.57\00:10:50.73 The king of Assyria and all his glory. 00:10:50.76\00:10:53.25 He will go up over all his channels 00:10:53.28\00:10:56.10 And go over all his banks. 00:10:56.13\00:10:58.08 He will pass through Judah. 00:10:58.11\00:10:59.51 He will overflow and pass over. 00:10:59.54\00:11:01.81 He will reach up to the neck 00:11:01.84\00:11:03.48 And the stretching out of his wings 00:11:03.51\00:11:05.90 Will fill the breadth of Your land, O Immanuel. 00:11:05.93\00:11:09.50 'Be shattered, O you peoples, and be broken in pieces. 00:11:09.53\00:11:13.00 Give ear, all you from far countries. 00:11:13.03\00:11:16.00 Gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces, 00:11:16.03\00:11:18.57 gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces. 00:11:18.60\00:11:22.06 Take counsel together, but it will come to nothing, 00:11:22.09\00:11:25.46 speak the word, but it will not stand, For God is with us.' 00:11:25.49\00:11:30.53 For the Lord spoke thus to me with a strong hand, 00:11:30.56\00:11:33.26 and instructed me that I should not walk 00:11:33.29\00:11:35.36 in the way of this people, saying, 00:11:35.39\00:11:38.02 'Do not say, 'A conspiracy,' 00:11:38.05\00:11:40.15 Concerning all that this people call a conspiracy, 00:11:40.18\00:11:43.77 Nor be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled. 00:11:43.80\00:11:46.97 The Lord of hosts, Him shall hallow. 00:11:47.00\00:11:49.76 Let Him be your fear, And let Him be your dread. 00:11:49.79\00:11:52.84 He will be as a sanctuary, But a stone of stumbling 00:11:52.87\00:11:56.14 and a rock of offense To both the houses of Israel, 00:11:56.17\00:12:00.02 as a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 00:12:00.05\00:12:04.65 And many among them shall stumble, 00:12:04.68\00:12:06.55 and They shall fall and be broken, 00:12:06.58\00:12:08.77 Be snared and taken." Yes. 00:12:08.80\00:12:11.68 It's a troubling kind of a passage here in Isaiah 8 00:12:11.71\00:12:16.08 because the people are very intimidated 00:12:16.11\00:12:21.30 by these outsiders by the Assyrians. 00:12:21.33\00:12:24.13 And they are very fearful of what's going to happen to them. 00:12:24.16\00:12:27.71 And Isaiah says, the Assyrians are gonna come in. 00:12:27.74\00:12:31.40 They're gonna smash everything like this, you know. 00:12:31.43\00:12:34.15 It's just really kind of scary. 00:12:34.18\00:12:36.27 But he puts in the middle of this, 00:12:36.30\00:12:38.57 he talks to Isaiah in verse 12. 00:12:38.60\00:12:40.36 He says "Do not call conspiracy 00:12:40.39\00:12:41.92 all that this people call conspiracy, 00:12:41.95\00:12:44.30 and do not fear what they fear, nor be in dread. 00:12:44.33\00:12:47.74 Don't be afraid like they are. 00:12:47.77\00:12:49.22 You have to be different from them. 00:12:49.25\00:12:51.64 The Christians in 1 Peter are instructed not to be afraid 00:12:51.67\00:12:56.59 of the persecution of the people from the outside 00:12:56.62\00:13:00.26 that are pressing in on them 00:13:00.29\00:13:02.06 trying to overcome them and pressure them. 00:13:02.09\00:13:05.21 And then he goes on and he says, then verse 14, 00:13:05.24\00:13:09.16 "And he will become a sanctuary and a stone of offense 00:13:09.19\00:13:11.41 and a rock of stumbling to both houses of Israel, 00:13:11.44\00:13:14.43 a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem." 00:13:14.46\00:13:17.69 That was the same thing we read about before, 00:13:17.72\00:13:19.34 Jesus as the stumbling block, 00:13:19.37\00:13:21.48 that cornerstone that God had set up. 00:13:21.51\00:13:24.09 So as we continue to look at this passage 00:13:24.12\00:13:28.00 we're going to learn some more about how Peter is trying 00:13:28.03\00:13:31.86 to encourage the Christians 00:13:31.89\00:13:34.33 as they face persecution from the outside. 00:13:34.36\00:13:38.16 Well, thank you, Dr. Shepherd, again. 00:13:38.19\00:13:39.75 We will just-- we will take a short break 00:13:39.78\00:13:41.52 and after these messages will be right back in our study. 00:13:41.55\00:13:44.74
