And we're back. 00:00:01.40\00:00:02.77 We are talking about getting along with those 00:00:02.80\00:00:04.17 who are not nice to you. 00:00:04.20\00:00:06.45 Not returning evil for evil. 00:00:06.48\00:00:08.21 And, Dr. Shepherd, in verse 9, I notice that Peter says, 00:00:08.24\00:00:11.40 "Not returning evil for evil," and then he goes on to say, 00:00:11.43\00:00:14.70 "knowing that you were called to this." 00:00:14.73\00:00:17.00 What is this calling 00:00:17.03\00:00:18.40 he's referring to in verse 9? Yes. 00:00:18.43\00:00:22.68 In verse 9, he is referring back to-- 00:00:22.71\00:00:29.17 there's a parallel to this calling 00:00:29.20\00:00:31.44 that the slaves had back in Chapter 2. 00:00:31.47\00:00:33.92 You know, they were called to follow the example of Jesus. 00:00:33.95\00:00:38.15 They were called to do that which was right. 00:00:38.18\00:00:41.12 In the face of that which was wrong, 00:00:41.15\00:00:43.46 they were supposed to bear suffering. 00:00:43.49\00:00:45.05 So now he reminds us of that parallel. 00:00:45.08\00:00:48.41 And this leads us to note 00:00:48.44\00:00:50.01 how these words are actually parallel 00:00:50.04\00:00:52.32 to the teaching of Jesus. 00:00:52.35\00:00:53.91 Remember, we said that 00:00:53.94\00:00:55.71 there are very strong parallels to Romans Chapter 12 00:00:55.74\00:01:00.31 where the Apostle Paul says things that are almost, 00:01:00.34\00:01:04.54 you know, just almost word for word 00:01:04.57\00:01:06.76 similar to what Peter has said here. 00:01:06.79\00:01:09.41 Well, if we turn to Luke 6, Luke 6:27-31, 00:01:09.44\00:01:14.38 we'll find what we might find-- the some of the roots 00:01:14.41\00:01:18.78 of what both Paul and Peter are talking about 00:01:18.81\00:01:23.18 in the words of Jesus. Luke 6:27-31. 00:01:23.21\00:01:28.03 Jesus says "But I say to you who hear, 00:01:28.06\00:01:30.50 Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 00:01:30.53\00:01:33.90 bless those who curse you and pray for those 00:01:33.93\00:01:36.22 who spitefully use you. 00:01:36.25\00:01:39.31 To him who strikes you on the one cheek, 00:01:39.34\00:01:41.97 offer the other also. 00:01:42.00\00:01:43.92 And from him who takes away your cloak, 00:01:43.95\00:01:45.96 do not withhold your tunic either. 00:01:45.99\00:01:48.56 Give to everyone who asks of you. 00:01:48.59\00:01:51.31 And from him who takes away 00:01:51.34\00:01:53.37 your goods do not ask them back." 00:01:53.40\00:01:56.65 Verse 31 as well. Oh. 00:01:56.68\00:01:58.46 "And just as you want men to do to you, 00:01:58.49\00:02:01.38 you also do to them likewise." All right. 00:02:01.41\00:02:05.16 Now this is Jesus sermon on the-- 00:02:05.19\00:02:10.75 in the Book of Luke if it's a Sermon on the Plain, 00:02:10.78\00:02:13.46 excuse me, in the Gospel of Matthew, 00:02:13.49\00:02:15.56 it's a Sermon on the Mount. 00:02:15.59\00:02:16.96 But similar things are going on in these two passages. 00:02:16.99\00:02:20.41 And here's Jesus words about 00:02:20.44\00:02:22.37 how you're supposed to react to people 00:02:22.40\00:02:25.65 who are rascals, people who hate you. 00:02:25.68\00:02:28.55 And it's very striking. 00:02:28.58\00:02:30.82 I mean, He says, "You are to love your enemies." 00:02:30.85\00:02:35.33 Love your enemies-- 00:02:35.36\00:02:37.71 Which is not always very easy to do. 00:02:37.74\00:02:40.87 It's not easy at all. 00:02:40.90\00:02:44.46 Many of us are surrounded by our friends 00:02:44.49\00:02:47.25 but when you have somebody who is an enemy, 00:02:47.28\00:02:51.07 I mean, a real enemy, 00:02:51.10\00:02:52.69 somebody who really does you wrong 00:02:52.72\00:02:54.35 and does bad things to you, 00:02:54.38\00:02:56.34 our natural reaction is to hate them back. 00:02:56.37\00:02:59.20 And Jesus says, "No, that's not the way of the Christian." 00:02:59.23\00:03:03.30 Now what do you do with the words of Jesus, you see? 00:03:03.33\00:03:08.86 You can tell a lot about a person's theology 00:03:08.89\00:03:10.91 about what they do with the words of Jesus 00:03:10.94\00:03:13.51 in the Sermon on the Mount or the Sermon on the Plain. 00:03:13.54\00:03:16.53 When He says, "When they hit you, 00:03:16.56\00:03:18.64 turn the other cheek." 00:03:18.67\00:03:20.04 When He says, "They take your cloak, 00:03:20.07\00:03:22.07 give them your tunic, too. 00:03:22.10\00:03:23.80 When they borrow things, don't ask them back." 00:03:23.83\00:03:25.32 I mean, these are very strong kind of statements 00:03:25.35\00:03:28.95 and lot of people reading that they'll say, 00:03:28.98\00:03:31.05 "Well, you know, it's kind of, 00:03:31.08\00:03:33.76 it's just kind of giving same nice things, 00:03:33.79\00:03:36.00 metaphoric kind of words, you know. 00:03:36.03\00:03:38.58 Well, according to Paul and to Peter 00:03:38.61\00:03:41.26 it doesn't seem like they understood Jesus that way. 00:03:41.29\00:03:44.67 They understood Jesus to be serious about 00:03:44.70\00:03:46.79 what He was talking about. 00:03:46.82\00:03:48.19 He means what He says. He means what He says, okay? 00:03:48.22\00:03:51.04 So just like you were told to bear present suffering, 00:03:51.07\00:03:56.21 looking forward to the future inheritance, 00:03:56.24\00:03:59.14 okay, that cannot be taken away. 00:03:59.17\00:04:01.30 So here the inheritance 00:04:01.33\00:04:03.09 that you're gonna receive is future 00:04:03.12\00:04:06.25 and He says we can bear present persecution, rejection, slander 00:04:06.28\00:04:12.52 because of our future inheritance 00:04:12.55\00:04:15.25 the blessing that God has given us. 00:04:15.28\00:04:17.46 Again, it's this consciousness of God 00:04:17.49\00:04:21.12 that rules the Christian's life. 00:04:21.15\00:04:24.63 That you're following in the example of Jesus. 00:04:24.66\00:04:27.58 You are conscious of what God's values are 00:04:27.61\00:04:30.94 and you act accordingly and it's striking. 00:04:30.97\00:04:36.51 Well, Dr. Shepherd, after verses10, 11 and 12, 00:04:36.54\00:04:40.50 it seems that Peter is quoting from another book. Yes. 00:04:40.53\00:04:45.51 What book is he quoting from? 00:04:45.54\00:04:46.93 He is quoting from the Book of Psalms. 00:04:46.96\00:04:49.29 And this particular Psalm that he quotes from is Psalm 34. 00:04:49.32\00:04:54.49 Psalm 34 is a Psalm of David which he composed 00:04:54.52\00:04:58.05 when was in the land of the Philistines. 00:04:58.08\00:05:01.81 He feigned madness before Abimelech 00:05:01.84\00:05:04.86 and we think of David's difficulties, 00:05:04.89\00:05:07.94 you know, his hard times that he had there. 00:05:07.97\00:05:09.72 How he felt far away from God and hope he had. 00:05:09.75\00:05:12.36 So let's turn over there to-- we got a moment here. 00:05:12.39\00:05:15.18 Turn over to Psalm 34 and just get the whole context 00:05:15.21\00:05:19.78 and we'll see where Peter draws on for this. 00:05:19.81\00:05:23.06 It's a little bit of a long passage, 00:05:23.09\00:05:24.76 so maybe what we'll do is I'll read part of it 00:05:24.79\00:05:27.16 and then you can read the other part. 00:05:27.19\00:05:29.49 Okay, this is Psalm 34 and we're starting in verse 1. 00:05:29.52\00:05:34.25 Remember, this is the Psalm that David wrote. 00:05:34.28\00:05:37.11 It says, "When he changed his behavior before Abimelech, 00:05:37.14\00:05:40.23 so that he drove him out, and he went away." 00:05:40.26\00:05:42.35 Okay, he says, "I will bless the Lord at all times. 00:05:42.38\00:05:45.28 His praise shall continually be in my mouth. 00:05:45.31\00:05:48.92 My soul makes its boast in the Lord. 00:05:48.95\00:05:51.61 Let the humble hear and be glad. 00:05:51.64\00:05:53.13 O magnify the Lord with me 00:05:53.16\00:05:55.30 and let us exalt His name together. 00:05:55.33\00:05:57.76 I sought the Lord, and He answered me, 00:05:57.79\00:06:00.12 and delivered me from all my fears. 00:06:00.15\00:06:02.79 Those who looked to Him are radiant 00:06:02.82\00:06:05.56 and their faces shall never be ashamed. 00:06:05.59\00:06:07.95 This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him 00:06:07.98\00:06:10.89 and saved him out of all his troubles. 00:06:10.92\00:06:13.54 The angel of the Lord encamps round those who fear him, 00:06:13.57\00:06:16.97 and delivers them. 00:06:17.00\00:06:18.55 O taste and see that the Lord is good. 00:06:18.58\00:06:20.80 Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him. 00:06:20.83\00:06:23.89 O fear the Lord, you His saints 00:06:23.92\00:06:26.19 for those who fear Him have no lack. 00:06:26.22\00:06:28.72 The young lions suffer want and hunger 00:06:28.75\00:06:31.65 but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing. 00:06:31.68\00:06:36.78 Come, you children, listen to me. 00:06:36.81\00:06:38.62 I will teach you the fear of the Lord. 00:06:38.65\00:06:40.99 Who is the man who desires life, and loves many days, 00:06:41.02\00:06:44.47 that he may see good? Keep your tongue from evil, 00:06:44.50\00:06:47.45 and your lips from speaking deceit. 00:06:47.48\00:06:49.27 Depart from evil and do good. Seek peace and pursue it. 00:06:49.30\00:06:53.20 The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, 00:06:53.23\00:06:55.11 and His ears are open to their cry. 00:06:55.14\00:06:57.62 The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, 00:06:57.65\00:07:00.36 to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth. 00:07:00.39\00:07:03.48 The righteous cry out and the Lord hears, 00:07:03.51\00:07:06.23 and delivers them out of all their troubles. 00:07:06.26\00:07:08.71 The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, 00:07:08.74\00:07:11.21 and saves such as have a contrite spirit. 00:07:11.24\00:07:15.61 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, 00:07:15.64\00:07:18.24 but the Lord delivers him out of them all. 00:07:18.27\00:07:20.75 He guards all his bones, not one of them is broken. 00:07:20.78\00:07:26.23 Evil shall slay the wicked, 00:07:26.26\00:07:27.88 and those who hate the righteous shall be condemned. 00:07:27.91\00:07:31.34 The Lord redeems the soul of His servants 00:07:31.37\00:07:34.08 and none of those who trust in Him 00:07:34.11\00:07:36.35 shall be condemned." Yes. 00:07:36.38\00:07:39.20 Now in this Psalm, David is in the situation 00:07:39.23\00:07:44.51 where he is in the land of the Philistines 00:07:44.54\00:07:47.86 and the Philistines start to-- they don't trust him. 00:07:47.89\00:07:51.40 And then he acts like he's gone crazy. 00:07:51.43\00:07:54.86 And Abimelech drives him away. 00:07:54.89\00:07:57.39 He says, "I don't need crazy men. 00:07:57.42\00:07:58.82 Why did you bring me this guy?" You know. 00:07:58.85\00:08:00.89 And so David escapes from Hamm. 00:08:00.92\00:08:05.20 He had gone to the land of the Philistines 00:08:05.23\00:08:06.96 where he shouldn't have gone and he escapes Hamm 00:08:06.99\00:08:10.35 and this Psalm is just filled with Thanksgiving that, 00:08:10.38\00:08:13.82 you know, the Lord was gracious to him and saved him. 00:08:13.85\00:08:17.07 And then right at the center of the Psalm 00:08:17.10\00:08:19.02 is where this passage that Peter quotes 00:08:19.05\00:08:21.25 in relationship to how do you relate 00:08:21.28\00:08:23.76 to people who are outsiders what-- 00:08:23.79\00:08:25.67 how should you deal with them and face them. 00:08:25.70\00:08:28.51 And so he says, "If you desire long life, love days, 00:08:28.54\00:08:32.79 you know, you want to live a longtime, 00:08:32.82\00:08:34.19 keep your tongue from evil." There is the central idea. 00:08:34.22\00:08:36.64 "And your lips from speaking deceit. 00:08:36.67\00:08:38.62 Turn away from evil and do good. 00:08:38.65\00:08:40.06 Seek peace and pursue it." 00:08:40.09\00:08:42.30 So it fits right in with what Peter's talking about. 00:08:42.33\00:08:46.47 Now verse 8 earlier you gave a structure on that verse. 00:08:46.50\00:08:50.06 What about verses-- 00:08:50.09\00:08:51.46 these verses 10, 11, 12, do they have a structure? 00:08:51.49\00:08:53.49 There is actually, an interesting structure. 00:08:53.52\00:08:55.60 He says, keep from wrong speech and action 00:08:55.63\00:08:59.69 and do right, wrong and right, seek peace. 00:08:59.72\00:09:04.76 God helps the righteous and God opposes the wrong. 00:09:04.79\00:09:08.94 So it's a chiasm again. 00:09:08.97\00:09:11.93 Wrong and right and right and wrong, okay. 00:09:11.96\00:09:15.53 So if you--you should want to live a longtime, 00:09:15.56\00:09:19.73 what you should do is keep from doing what's wrong. 00:09:19.76\00:09:22.71 You should do what's right, why? 00:09:22.74\00:09:24.70 Because God helps the righteous but God opposes the wicked. 00:09:24.73\00:09:30.25 Okay, so two things get in the way of peace. 00:09:30.28\00:09:34.02 Those things are wrong speech and wrong action 00:09:34.05\00:09:37.04 which we are all too prone to do. 00:09:37.07\00:09:39.01 But we are called to something different. 00:09:39.04\00:09:40.83 See we must do that which is good 00:09:40.86\00:09:43.06 and that which seeks peace. 00:09:43.09\00:09:45.09 And Peter finishes with the reference of how 00:09:45.12\00:09:47.57 God feels about all this. Yes. 00:09:47.60\00:09:50.59 He speaks of God's eyes 00:09:50.62\00:09:52.51 and God's ears and God's face, okay? 00:09:52.54\00:09:56.48 Maybe, well, anthropomorphic here, 00:09:56.51\00:09:58.53 you know, using terminology that we can understand. 00:09:58.56\00:10:01.50 But these were all seen in the ancient world as, 00:10:01.53\00:10:04.38 we might say, zones of the personality, okay? 00:10:04.41\00:10:07.84 All three together would express 00:10:07.87\00:10:09.30 the entire personality of a person, 00:10:09.33\00:10:11.63 their ears and their eyes and their face. 00:10:11.66\00:10:14.09 Thus God is totally in favor of good 00:10:14.12\00:10:17.11 and totally opposes the evil. 00:10:17.14\00:10:19.96 You maybe able to fool men and mistreat them 00:10:19.99\00:10:23.10 but you can never fool God. 00:10:23.13\00:10:25.21 And you have to face Him 00:10:25.24\00:10:26.61 when it comes time for the judgment. 00:10:26.64\00:10:28.81 So this passage is teaching us how we are to 00:10:28.84\00:10:34.31 again follow the patterns that God has set up for us, 00:10:34.34\00:10:38.59 the ways that He has set before us 00:10:38.62\00:10:41.05 and His value system which will bring us 00:10:41.08\00:10:44.81 the greatest blessing in life. 00:10:44.84\00:10:47.13 And I've seen that when I don't retaliate to people 00:10:47.16\00:10:50.20 and I don't, you know, try to hit them back, 00:10:50.23\00:10:54.00 it actually goes better for me 00:10:54.03\00:10:55.88 and makes much more friends and peace in the world. 00:10:55.91\00:10:59.89 Well, Dr. Shepherd, once again, 00:10:59.92\00:11:01.29 we want to thank you for being with us 00:11:01.32\00:11:02.75 in this very interesting Bible study. 00:11:02.78\00:11:05.14 We are studying the books of 1 and 2 Peter, 00:11:05.17\00:11:07.67 and we're not even halfway through the book or just about. 00:11:07.70\00:11:12.23 And we want to encourage you to pickup the Bible, 00:11:12.26\00:11:14.87 ask the Lord for His Holy Spirit to just guide you 00:11:14.90\00:11:17.80 as you read and as you pray, 00:11:17.83\00:11:20.15 think about what you are reading. 00:11:20.18\00:11:21.74 I'm sure that God has a message for you. 00:11:21.77\00:11:24.21 And we invite you to continue join us 00:11:24.24\00:11:26.88 for the next coming programs of "Books of the Book" 00:11:26.91\00:11:29.62 as we continue with Dr. Shepherd. 00:11:29.65\00:11:31.02 He's coming all the way from Andrews University to guide us 00:11:31.05\00:11:34.57 in these very fascinating Bible studies. 00:11:34.60\00:11:36.97 Till next time, God bless. 00:11:37.00\00:11:38.73
