And welcome back to our program. 00:00:01.40\00:00:02.77 Dr. Shepherd, in verse 2, there is a word 00:00:02.80\00:00:05.65 that caught my attention. 00:00:05.68\00:00:07.05 And it says fear, and my version says, 00:00:07.08\00:00:09.01 in the New King James Version says, 00:00:09.04\00:00:11.47 "When they observe your chaste conduct accompanied by fear." 00:00:11.50\00:00:15.62 What is this reference "fear" in verse 2? 00:00:15.65\00:00:18.68 My version, the English Standard Version in verse 2 says, 00:00:18.71\00:00:22.11 "When they see your respectful and pure conduct." 00:00:22.14\00:00:26.19 The word in Greek is fear, phobos. 00:00:26.22\00:00:28.75 And this is probably a relationship to God 00:00:28.78\00:00:33.29 that the woman has. 00:00:33.32\00:00:35.62 Her conduct, her way of life is typified by two things. 00:00:35.65\00:00:40.08 It's typified by purity, 00:00:40.11\00:00:43.70 this kind of something that's clean and pure 00:00:43.73\00:00:49.26 and it's typified by fear or reverence. 00:00:49.29\00:00:52.59 Probably both of these related toward God, 00:00:52.62\00:00:56.51 His standard of conduct, His way of thinking, 00:00:56.54\00:01:01.99 and His values have become the woman's, 00:01:02.02\00:01:05.09 as we've already talked about before 00:01:05.12\00:01:07.30 where the person is conscious of God. 00:01:07.33\00:01:11.12 God has become the primary group that they accept those values. 00:01:11.15\00:01:14.85 So they've--she has taken on these concepts of purity 00:01:14.88\00:01:19.29 and of reverence towards God. 00:01:19.32\00:01:21.39 And the husband is observing this 00:01:21.42\00:01:24.82 and this is part of the process of him becoming a Christian. 00:01:24.85\00:01:28.54 He observed-- remember we talked about 00:01:28.57\00:01:30.20 that circle of salvation before. 00:01:30.23\00:01:32.43 The pagan observes the Christian. 00:01:32.46\00:01:35.01 Here's Christianity and the world face-to-face. 00:01:35.04\00:01:39.29 You know, having contact with one another. 00:01:39.32\00:01:41.14 This woman is in a home where the husband is a pagan 00:01:41.17\00:01:46.75 and yet he is observing something attractive 00:01:46.78\00:01:49.54 about what she's doing. 00:01:49.57\00:01:51.07 So she's like an open letter? Yes, yes. 00:01:51.10\00:01:54.49 Well, let's look at verse 3, Peter talks about adornment. 00:01:54.52\00:01:59.14 What is Peter teaching on this subject? 00:01:59.17\00:02:01.00 Yeah. Well, this is a-- 00:02:01.03\00:02:02.40 I'm looking forward to what you have to say on this. 00:02:02.43\00:02:03.81 This is one of those controversial parts. 00:02:03.84\00:02:06.37 Before we get there, I just want to mention verse 1. 00:02:06.40\00:02:09.05 There's something kind of interesting about verse 1 00:02:09.08\00:02:12.18 where it says that the husband will-- 00:02:12.21\00:02:17.32 maybe won, he'll be won. 00:02:17.35\00:02:20.46 It's a passive voice in, in Greek. 00:02:20.49\00:02:25.40 He will be won. 00:02:25.43\00:02:27.28 And the passive voice is indicative of God's activity. 00:02:27.31\00:02:32.15 So the woman is living her life in front of her husband 00:02:32.18\00:02:36.57 but it is God who wins the husband. 00:02:36.60\00:02:39.78 It is the Holy Spirit that uses her witness to draw. 00:02:39.81\00:02:43.36 Too many times we-- 00:02:43.39\00:02:45.61 we want to be God's lawyers instead of His witnesses. 00:02:45.64\00:02:49.75 He wants us to be on the witness stand 00:02:49.78\00:02:51.62 and too many times we're ready to nail Him to the wall. 00:02:51.65\00:02:54.74 Well, more flies are attracted by honey than vinegar 00:02:54.77\00:02:58.96 and the simple quiet life is attractive, it's attractive. 00:02:58.99\00:03:04.40 Now that's when the things that Peter kind of focuses in on 00:03:04.43\00:03:08.01 is this idea of attraction. 00:03:08.04\00:03:10.61 So I'd like you to read verse 3 again. 00:03:10.64\00:03:14.17 "Do not let your adornment be merely outward 00:03:14.20\00:03:16.88 arranging the hair, wearing gold or putting on fine apparel." 00:03:16.91\00:03:22.05 All right, let me read it in the English Standard Version. 00:03:22.08\00:03:24.07 Now I want you to notice the difference 00:03:24.10\00:03:26.18 between the two versions. 00:03:26.21\00:03:27.58 I'm gonna ask you a question about your version. 00:03:27.61\00:03:29.76 That's the New King James Version? New King James. 00:03:29.79\00:03:31.97 Okay, here's the ESV, 00:03:32.00\00:03:33.37 "Do not let your adorning outward the braiding of hair 00:03:33.40\00:03:37.17 and the putting on of gold jewelry 00:03:37.20\00:03:40.42 or the clothing you wear." 00:03:40.45\00:03:42.79 Did you notice any word different between them? 00:03:42.82\00:03:45.13 Well, your version added a word, it seemed, jewelry. 00:03:45.16\00:03:48.48 Mine does not say jewelry. 00:03:48.51\00:03:49.88 Your's doesn't say jewelry, 00:03:49.91\00:03:51.28 well, and then yours added a word as well. Okay. 00:03:51.31\00:03:55.03 And yours used-- added the word merely, I think. 00:03:55.06\00:03:58.35 Merely outward, and yours just said outward. 00:03:58.38\00:04:00.76 Just said externally, yeah. Okay. 00:04:00.79\00:04:02.98 Now is the word merely in italics? It is. 00:04:03.01\00:04:06.87 It is. How did I know that? That's interesting. 00:04:06.90\00:04:09.42 I did see it, but it didn't really mean 00:04:09.45\00:04:12.26 anything to me other than-- 00:04:12.29\00:04:13.66 All right, well, here's-- in the King James Version 00:04:13.69\00:04:15.91 and the New King James Version 00:04:15.94\00:04:17.31 and there's a few others that will do this as well, 00:04:17.34\00:04:19.26 the New American Standard Bible. 00:04:19.29\00:04:21.32 Whenever they add a word to the text to help interpret it, 00:04:21.35\00:04:26.59 every translation is an interpretation. 00:04:26.62\00:04:28.74 But whenever they add on an extra word in there 00:04:28.77\00:04:32.19 to help interpret it, in the King James, 00:04:32.22\00:04:35.03 the New King James, the New American Standard, 00:04:35.06\00:04:37.14 they will put it in italics 00:04:37.17\00:04:39.45 so that you'll know that it's an added word. 00:04:39.48\00:04:42.68 So read that first part again. 00:04:42.71\00:04:45.74 "Do not let your adornment be merely outward." 00:04:45.77\00:04:48.76 All right, so don't let your-- 00:04:48.79\00:04:50.58 take out the merely that they added in. 00:04:50.61\00:04:53.13 "Do not let your adornment be outward." 00:04:53.16\00:04:56.44 Which is exactly what we have here in the ESV, 00:04:56.47\00:04:58.88 "Do not let your adorning be external," okay? 00:04:58.91\00:05:04.67 Peter really sets up a contrast between two ways of-- 00:05:04.70\00:05:09.65 shall we say adorning yourself. 00:05:09.68\00:05:11.80 The second part of it is actually in verse 4. 00:05:11.83\00:05:17.63 So now read verse 4. 00:05:17.66\00:05:19.22 "Rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, 00:05:19.25\00:05:22.97 with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, 00:05:23.00\00:05:26.99 which is very precious in the sight of God." 00:05:27.02\00:05:29.40 All right. All right. 00:05:29.43\00:05:30.80 So we have two contrasting ways of adorning ourselves. 00:05:30.83\00:05:36.40 And Peter, when he expresses these, 00:05:36.43\00:05:42.09 he does it in a very nice way, in Greek. 00:05:42.12\00:05:46.17 I've to explain little bit of Greek grammar to explain this. 00:05:46.20\00:05:49.75 But the word "the" in Greek is sometimes-- 00:05:49.78\00:05:53.86 well, if we said "the adorning" okay? 00:05:53.89\00:05:57.39 But sometimes the "the" can be separated 00:05:57.42\00:06:00.12 from the word adorning and they go together. 00:06:00.15\00:06:04.79 We can tell from the way Greek grammar is set up. 00:06:04.82\00:06:08.33 But they can sometimes put 00:06:08.36\00:06:09.73 a whole string of words in between 00:06:09.76\00:06:12.53 and the way that-- we call this a box construction. 00:06:12.56\00:06:14.67 The way--the reason they do this 00:06:14.70\00:06:16.45 is to kind of capture everything 00:06:16.48\00:06:19.49 and pull it together into one idea. 00:06:19.52\00:06:21.99 And the bookends of the word "the" 00:06:22.02\00:06:24.78 and the other word that it goes with are around all this. 00:06:24.81\00:06:28.43 That's exactly what he does in this passage. 00:06:28.46\00:06:30.78 So if I give it to you kind of a translation, 00:06:30.81\00:06:33.62 a very literal kind of translation, he says, 00:06:33.65\00:06:36.57 "Let not your adorning be the outer with braiding of hair 00:06:36.60\00:06:42.10 and wearing of gold or putting on garments," adornment. 00:06:42.13\00:06:48.04 Not that but instead-- 00:06:48.07\00:06:49.77 So it's all in one package? All in one package. 00:06:49.80\00:06:51.25 Okay. Yeah. 00:06:51.28\00:06:52.65 He says, your adornment should not be typified 00:06:52.68\00:06:55.07 by this external adorning, you know. 00:06:55.10\00:06:59.23 And it refers to several things, the braiding of hair, 00:06:59.26\00:07:02.52 the wearing of gold, the-- putting on garments. 00:07:02.55\00:07:06.18 Now he's not talking about people not wearing clothes, 00:07:06.21\00:07:09.34 but he's talking about adorning themselves, 00:07:09.37\00:07:11.84 making themselves attractive with this, okay? 00:07:11.87\00:07:15.27 So he says, "that's not the way to do it." 00:07:15.30\00:07:18.89 Now I'll have to say 00:07:18.92\00:07:21.51 the tradition of the Adventist Church 00:07:21.54\00:07:23.33 has been very opposed to outward adorning, 00:07:23.36\00:07:27.72 you know, wearing of jewelry and all kinds of things 00:07:27.75\00:07:30.95 that kind of draw attention to themselves. 00:07:30.98\00:07:34.09 That seems to have slipped in some quarters, 00:07:34.12\00:07:38.03 I'm sad to say, 00:07:38.06\00:07:39.84 and I think Peter is actually calling us back. 00:07:39.87\00:07:42.98 When you say don't let it merely be the outward, 00:07:43.01\00:07:46.09 it sort of softens it a little bit. 00:07:46.12\00:07:47.99 I think Peter's point is little stronger than that. 00:07:48.02\00:07:50.66 He says, "not this but this. 00:07:50.69\00:07:53.40 Don't do this, do this," okay? 00:07:53.43\00:07:56.12 So what he tells you to do 00:07:56.15\00:07:57.52 is to have the hidden of the heart person 00:07:57.55\00:08:00.44 that's another one of those box constructions, 00:08:00.47\00:08:03.03 in the-- now here's another one, 00:08:03.06\00:08:05.57 "in the imperishable of the gentle 00:08:05.60\00:08:07.98 and quiet spirit." Okay. 00:08:08.01\00:08:10.38 So, it's not this, but this. 00:08:10.41\00:08:13.40 And what Peter suggests is that the thing 00:08:13.43\00:08:17.37 that is really attractive-- remember we talked-- 00:08:17.40\00:08:20.16 we started by talking about that which is attractive. 00:08:20.19\00:08:22.05 What is attracting the husband's attention? 00:08:22.08\00:08:25.35 Is when the woman doesn't dress up, 00:08:25.38\00:08:29.58 but that the real beauty inside-- 00:08:29.61\00:08:32.06 the gentle and quiet spirit, which is imperishable, 00:08:32.09\00:08:35.28 he says, shines forth. 00:08:35.31\00:08:38.15 This is very precious to God. 00:08:38.18\00:08:39.60 Remember, God is her reference point. 00:08:39.63\00:08:42.35 And it says that this kind of adorning is imperishable. 00:08:42.38\00:08:46.48 It's the same terminology that he-- 00:08:46.51\00:08:48.58 kind of terminology that he used in chapter 1. 00:08:48.61\00:08:50.62 When he talked about our inheritance 00:08:50.65\00:08:52.02 that's imperishable, that's saved in heaven for us. 00:08:52.05\00:08:55.41 The trouble with beauty is that 00:08:55.44\00:08:58.52 time and gravity starts to take over. 00:08:58.55\00:09:01.15 After a while things start to sag, 00:09:01.18\00:09:03.81 you know, and hair falls out and the crease lines 00:09:03.84\00:09:07.86 and the crows feet come in and everything 00:09:07.89\00:09:09.91 and you don't look quite so pretty 00:09:09.94\00:09:11.99 as you used to when you were 20 or 25, you know. 00:09:12.02\00:09:16.99 Peter says there's something that never loses-- 00:09:17.02\00:09:19.84 the ravages of time have no effect on this kind of beauty. 00:09:19.87\00:09:23.97 It's really quite an amazing kind of presentation. 00:09:24.00\00:09:26.62 Well, we better press on 00:09:26.65\00:09:28.02 because we're running out of time. 00:09:28.05\00:09:29.65 Well, let's look at verse 5 and 6, 00:09:29.68\00:09:31.35 it talks about Sarah, 00:09:31.38\00:09:32.75 and suddenly why is she an example here? 00:09:32.78\00:09:35.80 Sarah is given as the example of the holy women of old 00:09:35.83\00:09:41.88 who hoped in God and were submissive to their husband. 00:09:41.91\00:09:46.02 She's kind of like the mother figure 00:09:46.05\00:09:48.66 that the women here are called on to follow. 00:09:48.69\00:09:53.19 And it's interesting that these women are-- 00:09:53.22\00:09:55.20 that they say that, 00:09:55.23\00:09:57.40 you know, they have the fear of the Lord and she is-- 00:09:57.43\00:10:01.35 it says that she's not to be afraid 00:10:01.38\00:10:03.82 or have any fear of intimidation. 00:10:03.85\00:10:07.70 In the Greco-Roman world the women could easily have, 00:10:07.73\00:10:11.14 you know, fear of her husband and be intimated by him. 00:10:11.17\00:10:13.77 But her new outlook is that she, 00:10:13.80\00:10:17.13 she belongs to God 00:10:17.16\00:10:18.53 and she is to not be afraid of what her husband has to say. 00:10:18.56\00:10:22.42 Okay. And the verse 7, Peter gives instructions to husbands. 00:10:22.45\00:10:26.87 Yeah, we better read this again. Sure. 00:10:26.90\00:10:30.56 "Husbands, likewise dwell with them with understanding, 00:10:30.59\00:10:34.02 giving honor to the wife as to the weaker vessel 00:10:34.05\00:10:37.04 and as being heirs together of the grace of life 00:10:37.07\00:10:40.31 that your prayers may not be hindered." 00:10:40.34\00:10:43.01 Okay. Now there's something important here. 00:10:43.04\00:10:46.38 There's a strong emphasis on mutuality 00:10:46.41\00:10:50.23 in this presentation that Peter gives here. 00:10:50.26\00:10:53.37 He uses two words that have connected with them in Greek, 00:10:53.40\00:10:56.46 the word "with." Okay. 00:10:56.49\00:10:59.08 So, they are to dwell "with" their wives 00:10:59.11\00:11:04.91 and the wives are heirs "with," they're fellow heirs. 00:11:04.94\00:11:10.28 So there's a strong emphasis on mutuality between the two. 00:11:10.31\00:11:15.49 The men are to be wise to dwell together 00:11:15.52\00:11:20.04 with in accordance with knowledge. 00:11:20.07\00:11:22.59 They are not to be harsh 00:11:22.62\00:11:25.33 and just go on emotion in relationship to their wives. 00:11:25.36\00:11:29.24 Now, Peter says something here 00:11:29.27\00:11:30.90 that kind of gets some people upset a little bit. 00:11:30.93\00:11:34.08 He speaks of the wife as the weaker vessel. 00:11:34.11\00:11:36.59 Now the word vessel is simply a terminology 00:11:36.62\00:11:39.05 that was used in the ancient world to refer to the body. 00:11:39.08\00:11:42.61 So it's not some kind of demeaning of a woman. 00:11:42.64\00:11:47.50 A male could be called the vessel as well. 00:11:47.53\00:11:50.36 And it--and is elsewhere in scripture. 00:11:50.39\00:11:54.02 But when he says that they are weaker, 00:11:54.05\00:11:55.74 this is simply a question of them being weaker physically. 00:11:55.77\00:11:59.97 Not that they are weaker people morally or anything like that. 00:12:00.00\00:12:06.15 There's a reason today why men and women in the Olympics 00:12:06.18\00:12:10.01 have separate competing sports. 00:12:10.04\00:12:13.59 Men and women don't compete together 00:12:13.62\00:12:14.99 because men are physically stronger and it's not fair. 00:12:15.02\00:12:17.77 You have to have be, you know, matched up properly. 00:12:17.80\00:12:20.33 So the men are to honor their wives 00:12:20.36\00:12:23.65 because they are fellow heirs of the grace of life. 00:12:23.68\00:12:27.80 And then Peter gives a warning, 00:12:27.83\00:12:29.35 he says if you don't do this, your prayers will be hindered. 00:12:29.38\00:12:33.11 Now some people say, "Oh, big deal, 00:12:33.14\00:12:35.52 so who cares if, you know, if your prayer are hindered. 00:12:35.55\00:12:38.46 What difference does that make--" 00:12:38.49\00:12:39.86 I mean, in Peter's world this is very serious business. 00:12:39.89\00:12:43.44 You don't want your prayers hindered. 00:12:43.47\00:12:45.53 And so God is giving instruction to husbands 00:12:45.56\00:12:49.57 that they need to take their wives seriously, 00:12:49.60\00:12:51.29 they need to treat them fairly, 00:12:51.32\00:12:52.69 they need to treat them as equal partners 00:12:52.72\00:12:55.09 and not look down on them. 00:12:55.12\00:12:57.18 So it's a very interesting passage 00:12:57.21\00:13:01.07 that winds through a social system 00:13:01.10\00:13:04.32 where male dominance is very strong. 00:13:04.35\00:13:06.85 It turns it topsy-turvy while at the same time 00:13:06.88\00:13:10.16 affirming a typical kind of pattern of the home. 00:13:10.19\00:13:14.15 So really it's an amazing piece of rhetoric 00:13:14.18\00:13:17.74 for how it uplifts the wife, 00:13:17.77\00:13:20.47 how it instructs her in what to do, 00:13:20.50\00:13:22.80 instructs the husband, 00:13:22.83\00:13:24.22 and it shows that mutuality that is God's idea for His people. 00:13:24.25\00:13:28.41 Well, Dr. Shepherd, we want to thank you again 00:13:28.44\00:13:30.22 for being with us today in this Bible Study of 1 and 2 Peter. 00:13:30.25\00:13:35.41 We are continuing our study in the next coming up programs 00:13:35.44\00:13:38.61 and we ask that you continue to join us 00:13:38.64\00:13:40.75 as we continue reading the Books of 1 and 2 Peter. 00:13:40.78\00:13:44.40
