Hello and thank you for joining us 00:00:23.35\00:00:25.01 in this program of "Books of the Book." 00:00:25.04\00:00:27.06 We are studying in the Books of 1 and 2 Peter. 00:00:27.09\00:00:30.04 And with us is Dr. Tom Shepherd. 00:00:30.07\00:00:32.30 He is a professor at Andrews's University, 00:00:32.33\00:00:35.42 teaching New Testament interpretation. 00:00:35.45\00:00:37.74 And we're studying about how the Christian must face 00:00:37.77\00:00:40.55 the world as Jesus, his or her example. 00:00:40.58\00:00:44.88 Dr. Shepherd, can you summarize for us 00:00:44.91\00:00:46.86 what we learned about that? 00:00:46.89\00:00:48.49 All right, so in this second half 00:00:48.52\00:00:50.62 or second portion of the book 00:00:50.65\00:00:52.09 in the three sections we talked about. 00:00:52.12\00:00:54.50 He starts off by describing-- well, he transitions into it, 00:00:54.53\00:00:58.41 and then he describes how the overriding concept 00:00:58.44\00:01:01.07 is submission to different kinds of individuals. 00:01:01.10\00:01:03.63 We're gonna see groups of individuals 00:01:03.66\00:01:05.68 that he talks to, that he tells to submit. 00:01:05.71\00:01:09.01 Some of these relationships are seen as a scandal today. 00:01:09.04\00:01:12.21 The first one we started talking about 00:01:12.24\00:01:13.65 was the issue of servants or slaves 00:01:13.68\00:01:16.37 in relationship to their masters. 00:01:16.40\00:01:18.98 But what we're going to turn to now 00:01:19.01\00:01:20.77 is the example of Jesus in suffering and submitting 00:01:20.80\00:01:25.04 which is at the centre of this passage. 00:01:25.07\00:01:27.03 And actually is that the centre of this whole section. 00:01:27.06\00:01:32.49 It's kind of unexpected 00:01:32.52\00:01:37.42 that when he starts to talk to Christians 00:01:37.45\00:01:40.29 that the very first group that he talks to is the slaves. 00:01:40.32\00:01:46.41 It's part of this idea of subverting power structures 00:01:46.44\00:01:51.16 and turning things upside down. 00:01:51.19\00:01:53.41 In the ancient household, the head of the household 00:01:53.44\00:01:56.77 would be the father figure called pater familias. 00:01:56.80\00:02:00.39 And that would be the person 00:02:00.42\00:02:01.79 you would expect to talk to first. 00:02:01.82\00:02:03.89 And yet, he's talked to last. 00:02:03.92\00:02:05.88 So the first should be last and the last should be first. 00:02:05.91\00:02:08.40 And so they--the slaves are held up as an example 00:02:08.43\00:02:11.54 to Christians of submitting to the powers around them. 00:02:11.57\00:02:15.76 I had an experience years ago in Brazil 00:02:15.79\00:02:20.33 that was really an unexpected example to me. 00:02:20.36\00:02:25.11 I was struggling with Portuguese when we first went there. 00:02:25.14\00:02:29.53 After I'd been 5 months in the country 00:02:29.56\00:02:31.29 I started teaching and had these wonderful students. 00:02:31.32\00:02:35.29 But the Brazilians who tend-- they were--they liked to talk. 00:02:35.32\00:02:41.32 And I would, at the beginning of the class 00:02:41.35\00:02:44.79 each day, I would call the roll. 00:02:44.82\00:02:46.92 Well, Brazilians have very long names 00:02:46.95\00:02:49.64 that involve both the mother's and father's name. 00:02:49.67\00:02:51.90 And you could have something like 00:02:51.93\00:02:53.82 Jose Ferreira Nascimento DeSilveira 00:02:53.85\00:02:57.02 you know, this long thing, you know. 00:02:57.05\00:02:59.00 And I was reading through these names 00:02:59.03\00:03:00.94 and I was just mangling them, you know. 00:03:00.97\00:03:03.01 And so every time I would mangle these names, 00:03:03.04\00:03:06.47 these talkative, friendly students 00:03:06.50\00:03:08.18 they would laugh because of me. 00:03:08.21\00:03:10.06 It was funny, you know. 00:03:10.09\00:03:11.94 But it got to me, you know. It, eventually it hurt. 00:03:11.97\00:03:17.57 And I was--one day I was reading through the roll 00:03:17.60\00:03:20.50 and I would say the names and they would laugh. 00:03:20.53\00:03:22.51 And I was say the names and they would laugh. 00:03:22.54\00:03:24.68 And finally I just, I just closed the book. 00:03:24.71\00:03:27.97 And one of the students in the front, said, 00:03:28.00\00:03:29.42 "Oh, professor, you didn't call my name." 00:03:29.45\00:03:30.82 'Cause they were very conscious 00:03:30.85\00:03:32.22 that they had to be marked in as present, you see? 00:03:32.25\00:03:34.61 And I waited till they quieted down 00:03:34.64\00:03:36.99 and then I said in my quite broken Portuguese. 00:03:37.02\00:03:41.88 "You know, it's hard for a foreigner 00:03:41.91\00:03:44.38 that whenever he opens his mouth that you laugh at him." 00:03:44.41\00:03:48.64 Boy, you could hear a pin drop in that room. 00:03:48.67\00:03:51.57 Now they were hurt and this was the beginning of class. 00:03:51.60\00:03:55.85 Oh, it's terrible. 00:03:55.88\00:03:57.51 And I went through the class you know 00:03:57.54\00:03:59.28 and I finished the class and they were all going on, 00:03:59.31\00:04:01.22 they say, "Good night professor. 00:04:01.25\00:04:02.62 Good night professor." 00:04:02.65\00:04:04.40 Actually, you made many friends there as well. 00:04:04.43\00:04:06.28 Oh, man, I just felt terrible. 00:04:06.31\00:04:07.86 There were these three young ladies--God bless them. 00:04:07.89\00:04:10.23 They'd stayed by and then walked back with me, 00:04:10.26\00:04:12.68 backed out of walking home. 00:04:12.71\00:04:14.08 And they said, "Oh, professor. 00:04:14.11\00:04:15.71 Our people don't have manners. 00:04:18.33\00:04:19.96 That's what they said. 00:04:19.99\00:04:21.78 And I went home and I, oh, 00:04:21.81\00:04:24.03 I prayed about this, what should I do. 00:04:24.06\00:04:25.70 You know, I just felt quite discouraged 00:04:25.73\00:04:27.67 about the whole thing. 00:04:27.70\00:04:29.38 So I prayed it through and I was just--no, 00:04:29.41\00:04:32.66 I will be brave, I will be strong, 00:04:32.69\00:04:35.15 you know, I'm a missionary. 00:04:35.18\00:04:37.12 And I went to class the next time 00:04:37.15\00:04:40.90 and I decided I would say nothing about this, 00:04:40.93\00:04:43.49 I would just go on. 00:04:43.52\00:04:45.64 So I called the roll and nobody laughed this time. 00:04:45.67\00:04:49.43 I called the roll. 00:04:49.46\00:04:50.83 And then it was time to open the class with prayer. 00:04:50.86\00:04:55.60 And I always had them stand for prayer 00:04:55.63\00:04:57.72 and I would always ask one of them to pray. 00:04:57.75\00:05:01.37 Because--I don't know, if you, you know, found this 00:05:01.40\00:05:05.63 but when you're learning a foreign language, 00:05:05.66\00:05:08.15 praying in public is the last thing you'd do. 00:05:08.18\00:05:10.87 Because you feel like, I'm talking to God 00:05:10.90\00:05:13.72 it's got to be right. 00:05:13.75\00:05:16.15 So I always had them pray. I said, "So who will pray?" 00:05:16.18\00:05:18.67 Oh, somebody said, "I will pray, I will pray." 00:05:18.70\00:05:20.07 "No, no, no," said the whole class. 00:05:20.10\00:05:21.62 "The president of the class has to pray." Okay. 00:05:21.65\00:05:25.45 So this was the class, mostly of young ladies, 00:05:25.48\00:05:27.79 it was education students. 00:05:27.82\00:05:29.23 And there was a young man 00:05:29.26\00:05:30.63 who was the president of the class. 00:05:30.66\00:05:32.03 So he comes up to the front of the class-- 00:05:32.06\00:05:33.43 well, they didn't usually do this. 00:05:33.46\00:05:34.83 He comes up to the front of the class to pray. 00:05:34.86\00:05:36.88 So I don't know what's happening, you know. 00:05:36.91\00:05:38.43 He comes up to the front and he prays in English. 00:05:38.46\00:05:46.03 Now that might not seem anything great to most people. 00:05:46.06\00:05:50.71 But there weren't many people on the campus 00:05:50.74\00:05:53.07 who could speak English well. 00:05:53.10\00:05:55.45 There weren't very many people 00:05:55.48\00:05:56.85 that I could have a conversation with and then 00:05:56.88\00:05:58.39 about a handful of people that I could have a conversation with 00:05:58.42\00:06:01.35 and I don't recall this young man was one of them. 00:06:01.38\00:06:04.07 He prayed in English. 00:06:04.10\00:06:06.12 And then he turned to me after the prayer, 00:06:06.15\00:06:08.44 he apologized on behalf of the class. 00:06:08.47\00:06:11.20 They gave me a little gift, 00:06:11.23\00:06:12.69 it was a writing pen all wrapped up. 00:06:12.72\00:06:15.14 And then they sang a song about friendship. 00:06:15.17\00:06:17.23 Wow. Man. 00:06:17.26\00:06:18.90 Talk about a bonding moment. 00:06:18.93\00:06:21.11 That was the unexpected example 00:06:21.14\00:06:23.89 that came to my life in Brazil, unexpected. 00:06:23.92\00:06:27.47 Peter has unexpected examples, 00:06:27.50\00:06:30.15 the slaves, examples to the Christian church. 00:06:30.18\00:06:33.36 Now we're gonna come to the greatest example of all. 00:06:33.39\00:06:35.63 I want you to read verses 21-25. 00:06:35.66\00:06:39.19 "For to this you were called, 00:06:39.22\00:06:40.74 because Christ also suffered for us, 00:06:40.77\00:06:42.98 leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps, 00:06:43.01\00:06:46.80 'Who committed no sin nor was deceit found in His mouth,' 00:06:46.83\00:06:51.16 who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return, 00:06:51.19\00:06:55.19 when He suffered, He did not threaten, 00:06:55.22\00:06:57.96 but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously. 00:06:57.99\00:07:01.69 Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, 00:07:01.72\00:07:05.46 that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness 00:07:05.49\00:07:09.23 by whose stripes you were healed. 00:07:09.26\00:07:11.76 For you were like sheep going astray, 00:07:11.79\00:07:14.67 but have now returned to the Shepherd 00:07:14.70\00:07:17.88 and Overseer of your souls." 00:07:17.91\00:07:21.12 I've noticed on verse 21 here that Peter speaks of a calling. 00:07:21.15\00:07:26.99 What is this calling? Yes. 00:07:27.02\00:07:29.71 To this you were called, he says. 00:07:29.74\00:07:33.07 This calling is actually the last part of verse 20. 00:07:33.10\00:07:37.79 It is to suffer when you do what is good. 00:07:37.82\00:07:41.61 Now it's not that it is God's will for us to suffer, 00:07:41.64\00:07:44.46 that's not what Peter is teaching. 00:07:44.49\00:07:47.14 Rather it is His will that we do good. 00:07:47.17\00:07:50.55 And if we suffer in the process because we do what is good. 00:07:50.58\00:07:55.95 It is no reason to stop doing what is good. 00:07:55.98\00:07:59.97 Doing good is more important than suffering. 00:08:00.00\00:08:04.80 Even if you have to suffer for it it's better to do good 00:08:04.83\00:08:08.54 than to turn and do what is evil. 00:08:08.57\00:08:10.12 So that's the calling of the Christian. 00:08:10.15\00:08:11.99 The calling of the Christian is to do good. 00:08:12.02\00:08:14.43 To emulate the example of Jesus, to stand in line 00:08:14.46\00:08:21.98 with the moral code that God has laid down. 00:08:22.01\00:08:26.21 Remember He laid the chief cornerstone 00:08:26.24\00:08:28.37 that sets the directions of the house. 00:08:28.40\00:08:30.97 And we are supposed to line up our lives 00:08:31.00\00:08:35.32 with the example of Jesus. 00:08:35.35\00:08:39.53 What is this-- what is the surprise verse 21? 00:08:39.56\00:08:42.76 Now, I told you about unexpected examples, you know. 00:08:42.79\00:08:46.47 And there's a big surprise. 00:08:46.50\00:08:48.05 In fact, there are two surprises in verse 21 00:08:48.08\00:08:51.34 that would just-- you would miss it 00:08:51.37\00:08:53.27 if you didn't realize what was going on here. 00:08:53.30\00:08:57.66 The first is this--the most important is the statement, 00:08:57.69\00:09:02.35 when it says in verse 21, that Christ suffered for you. 00:09:02.38\00:09:10.24 Someone says, "Well, I know. 00:09:10.27\00:09:12.51 I know that's what the New Testament teaches." 00:09:12.54\00:09:15.86 This is the only place in the New Testament 00:09:15.89\00:09:20.74 that says Christ suffered for you, 00:09:20.77\00:09:24.81 only in 1 Peter does it-- it is stated. 00:09:24.84\00:09:28.00 He states it again later in chapter 3. 00:09:28.03\00:09:30.62 Christ suffered for you. 00:09:30.65\00:09:33.22 Wait a minute, don't the-- 00:09:33.25\00:09:34.62 don't the gospels show us Jesus suffering for us? 00:09:34.65\00:09:37.24 Yes. Yes, they show Him suffering for us. 00:09:37.27\00:09:39.89 Well, didn't Paul say that Christ suffered for you? 00:09:39.92\00:09:42.57 No, Paul said, "The Christ died for you." 00:09:42.60\00:09:46.15 Peter says, "Christ suffered for you." 00:09:46.18\00:09:50.47 Is there any difference between 00:09:50.50\00:09:51.87 dying for you than suffering for you? 00:09:51.90\00:09:54.48 Ah, it's a great question. 00:09:54.51\00:09:55.96 I mean, in a sense the two are intertwined. 00:09:55.99\00:10:00.16 But suffering comes before death. 00:10:00.19\00:10:03.65 Dying for you is maybe the end product of that suffering. 00:10:03.68\00:10:07.23 And remember, Peter is describing 00:10:07.26\00:10:09.31 the Christian's response to the world's persecution. 00:10:09.34\00:10:13.08 And so what he wants to say is 00:10:13.11\00:10:14.89 the Christian has an example in front of him, 00:10:14.92\00:10:19.05 not only of death by of suffering. 00:10:19.08\00:10:22.08 And that is the example of Jesus 00:10:22.11\00:10:25.34 that he is going to talk about here in this whole passage. 00:10:25.37\00:10:29.94 And verses 22 and 23, here talk about Jesus' 00:10:29.97\00:10:33.48 suffering before His death. 00:10:33.51\00:10:35.54 What do they express? 00:10:35.57\00:10:36.94 Well, before we go there I want you think for a moment 00:10:36.97\00:10:40.16 about this whole idea of following in Jesus' steps. 00:10:40.19\00:10:46.30 In the Book of Mark 8:34-38, 00:10:46.33\00:10:53.58 Jesus talk--we better turn to the passage. 00:10:55.75\00:10:58.90 Okay. Mark 8:34-38. 00:10:58.93\00:11:02.20 This is an important turning point in the gospel of Mark. 00:11:02.23\00:11:06.47 We talked about this in "Books of the Book" before. 00:11:06.50\00:11:10.62 The Gospel of Mark and here is the big turning point 00:11:10.65\00:11:13.90 is when Peter confesses that Jesus is the Messiah. 00:11:13.93\00:11:17.14 And immediately when Jesus explains 00:11:17.17\00:11:19.32 that He is the Messiah, He starts to teach them 00:11:19.35\00:11:21.90 about His death, where He's going. 00:11:21.93\00:11:25.03 He is the Messiah, where's He going? 00:11:25.06\00:11:26.64 He is going to the cross. 00:11:26.67\00:11:28.04 Mark 8:34-38, this is what it says, 00:11:28.07\00:11:30.51 "And calling the crowd to him with His disciples, 00:11:30.54\00:11:32.80 He said to them, 'If anyone would come after me, 00:11:32.83\00:11:34.91 let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 00:11:34.94\00:11:38.87 For whoever would save his life will lose it, 00:11:38.90\00:11:41.17 but whoever loses his life for my sake 00:11:41.20\00:11:43.20 and the gospel's will save it. 00:11:43.23\00:11:45.30 For what does it profit a man 00:11:45.33\00:11:47.32 to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? 00:11:47.35\00:11:50.70 For what can a man give in return for his soul? 00:11:50.73\00:11:54.03 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words 00:11:54.06\00:11:56.33 in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him 00:11:56.36\00:11:58.91 will the Son of Man also be ashamed 00:11:58.94\00:12:00.69 when he comes in the glory of his Father 00:12:00.72\00:12:02.42 with the holy angels.'" 00:12:02.45\00:12:03.82 You see, you have to follow the example of Jesus. 00:12:03.85\00:12:06.77 He said take the cross and follow Me. 00:12:06.80\00:12:10.10 Now here's exactly the same thing 00:12:10.13\00:12:12.25 that's going on with these-- with these questions, 00:12:12.28\00:12:15.85 they're following the example of Jesus. 00:12:15.88\00:12:20.14 So now I'll come to your question 00:12:20.17\00:12:22.63 that you talked about--about Jesus suffering and death 00:12:22.66\00:12:26.66 and what they express to us, okay. 00:12:26.69\00:12:30.34 This is found in verses 22 and 23. 00:12:30.37\00:12:32.13 I want you to read verses 22 and 23 00:12:32.16\00:12:33.66 for us again of 1 Peter 2. 00:12:33.69\00:12:39.01 "'Who committed no sin, nor was deceit found 00:12:39.04\00:12:41.45 in His mouth,' who, when He was reviled, 00:12:41.48\00:12:44.78 did not revile in return, when He suffered, 00:12:44.81\00:12:47.69 He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him 00:12:47.72\00:12:51.48 who judges righteously." 00:12:51.51\00:12:54.11 Now we don't have much time here at this-- 00:12:54.14\00:12:57.16 we're gonna take little break here in a moment. 00:12:57.19\00:12:59.15 But Peter here is actually drawing on the Old Testament, 00:12:59.18\00:13:04.56 from the Book of Isaiah Chapter 53. 00:13:04.59\00:13:08.31 And in Isaiah 53, we have this whole expression 00:13:08.34\00:13:14.61 of the servant of the Lord and how he suffers 00:13:14.64\00:13:19.72 and goes through these terrible experiences. 00:13:19.75\00:13:23.05 But Peter does this in an interesting way. 00:13:23.08\00:13:26.30 And again it's one of those, kind of, unexpected things. 00:13:26.33\00:13:30.42 And I think after the break, 00:13:30.45\00:13:32.54 we'll take and we'll ponder little bit of Isaiah 53. 00:13:32.57\00:13:35.80 And we'll see how the Book of 1 Peter orders, 00:13:35.83\00:13:41.58 or shall we say reorders, the telling of Isaiah 53. 00:13:41.61\00:13:45.16 So we'll take a break at this moment, 00:13:45.19\00:13:46.90 and then we'll come back to talk to you in just a little bit. 00:13:46.93\00:13:49.83
