And welcome back to "Books Of The Book". 00:00:01.40\00:00:02.77 We are talking about submission 00:00:02.80\00:00:04.17 to greater powers or authorities. 00:00:04.20\00:00:06.03 And, Dr. Shepherd, how is a Christians 00:00:06.06\00:00:08.25 supposed to relate to the government authorities? 00:00:08.28\00:00:11.24 Now, this is a good question because we all are in countries 00:00:11.27\00:00:14.87 where we have relationships to government authorities 00:00:14.90\00:00:17.70 and how should we relate to them. 00:00:17.73\00:00:20.15 Peter talks about been submissive. 00:00:20.18\00:00:23.52 But, we notice something that he says here and he-- 00:00:23.55\00:00:26.91 shall I say modifies or helps us to understand 00:00:26.94\00:00:32.13 what exactly that submission involves. 00:00:32.16\00:00:34.52 Because he says in verse 14, 00:00:34.55\00:00:35.99 "The governors who are sent by him to punish those 00:00:36.02\00:00:38.51 who do evil and to praise those who do good." 00:00:38.54\00:00:42.70 The government officials are the guardians of good in society 00:00:42.73\00:00:50.32 and the punishers of bad in society. 00:00:50.35\00:00:53.31 That is their role, their God given role. 00:00:53.34\00:00:58.04 So, some one might say, 00:00:58.07\00:01:00.29 "Well, how should I relate to them 00:01:00.32\00:01:02.08 if they don't do that?" 00:01:02.11\00:01:04.83 Or if there is corruption even in authority? 00:01:04.86\00:01:07.34 In the corruption. Yeah. 00:01:07.37\00:01:08.74 Now, we're gonna come to in a little bit down. 00:01:08.77\00:01:10.39 He is gonna talk about some corruption things 00:01:10.42\00:01:12.24 a little bit later here. But... 00:01:12.27\00:01:13.91 Peter always links these ideas of power 00:01:17.94\00:01:22.02 with the ideas of ethics of justice of right and wrong. 00:01:22.05\00:01:27.45 Okay? And so, 00:01:27.48\00:01:30.75 you submit to them as far as they go 00:01:30.78\00:01:33.57 in their God given authority. 00:01:33.60\00:01:36.16 When they step out of their God given authority 00:01:36.19\00:01:39.69 you have a superior relationship to God that overtakes 00:01:39.72\00:01:45.73 that inferior relationship to the governing authority. 00:01:45.76\00:01:50.06 So, if you think of it, God is at the top, 00:01:50.09\00:01:52.12 governing authoritys, and you here. 00:01:52.15\00:01:55.28 If the governing authority doesn't do what God says 00:01:55.31\00:01:57.18 they stepped out of the way. 00:01:57.21\00:01:58.58 Now it's direct to God. 00:01:58.61\00:01:59.98 Whatever God says that's what you do 00:02:00.01\00:02:01.38 and you may have to disobey them. 00:02:01.41\00:02:02.99 This is what your apostle said to the religious leaders. 00:02:03.02\00:02:05.17 "We must obey God rather than men." 00:02:05.20\00:02:07.51 When men step out of the line 00:02:07.54\00:02:09.51 of which God has ordained for them to do 00:02:09.54\00:02:11.27 we don't obey them any more. Okay? 00:02:11.30\00:02:13.82 And in some locations we have this thing 00:02:13.85\00:02:17.61 we call civil disobedience. 00:02:17.64\00:02:19.70 Now, that should never be violent. 00:02:19.73\00:02:21.19 The Christian's not call to violence. 00:02:21.22\00:02:22.59 The Christians call to peace. 00:02:22.62\00:02:24.45 But there may be times when we have to say 00:02:24.48\00:02:26.70 "No, this is an unjust law" and we have to stand up to it 00:02:26.73\00:02:29.54 and say that it's wrong. 00:02:29.57\00:02:31.11 Not in violent way but in a non-violent way, 00:02:31.14\00:02:34.70 where we may have to protest, we may have to--you know, 00:02:34.73\00:02:38.27 there might be any variety of things that might be done 00:02:38.30\00:02:40.85 that simply state to the governing authorities, 00:02:40.88\00:02:43.15 "No, you have gone beyond your rightful role." 00:02:43.18\00:02:46.43 And that's proper for Christians to do 00:02:46.46\00:02:48.64 in whatever society that they are in. 00:02:48.67\00:02:50.45 Now, there is a price to pay for that, frankly. 00:02:50.48\00:02:53.46 And that price can be very harsh. 00:02:53.49\00:02:56.59 But it's still being faithful to Christ to stand 00:02:56.62\00:02:59.32 for what is true and not to give in to the evil. 00:02:59.35\00:03:02.73 Too many times we don't want to make waves. 00:03:02.76\00:03:08.14 And also we should make waves unnecessarily. 00:03:08.17\00:03:10.24 But, when some thing is wrong we should say it's wrong. 00:03:10.27\00:03:14.13 And so there are certain limits to this submission, you see? 00:03:14.16\00:03:19.29 So, he talks about honoring everyone, 00:03:19.32\00:03:22.85 loving the brotherhood, fearing God, 00:03:22.88\00:03:24.46 and even honoring the emperor. 00:03:24.49\00:03:26.59 Not dishonoring him. 00:03:26.62\00:03:28.11 But remember, God is above the emperor. 00:03:28.14\00:03:31.23 You fear God, you honor the emperor. 00:03:31.26\00:03:33.68 And if the emperor is something that's shameful 00:03:33.71\00:03:36.91 you don't honor that. All right? 00:03:36.94\00:03:39.23 So, it's a pretty clear picture about the Christians role 00:03:39.26\00:03:43.85 with in the powers structures in which they find themselves. 00:03:43.88\00:03:46.94 Okay? 00:03:46.97\00:03:49.97 This brings us then to verse 18. 00:03:50.00\00:03:53.67 "Servants, be submissive to your masters with all fear, 00:03:53.70\00:03:58.45 not only to the good and gentle, but also to the harsh"? 00:03:58.48\00:04:05.28 19? Yeah, okay. 00:04:05.31\00:04:06.70 Read verse 19 and 20. 00:04:06.73\00:04:09.21 "For this is commendable, if because of conscience 00:04:09.24\00:04:12.74 toward God one endures grief, suffering wrongfully. 00:04:12.77\00:04:16.41 For what credit is it if, when you are beaten 00:04:16.44\00:04:19.76 for your faults, you take it patiently? 00:04:19.79\00:04:22.78 But when you do good and suffer, 00:04:22.81\00:04:24.68 if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God." 00:04:24.71\00:04:30.89 All right, now, the people that he's talking to here 00:04:30.92\00:04:33.11 are household servants or slaves. 00:04:33.14\00:04:35.92 And it's a scandal to many people 00:04:35.95\00:04:42.03 that the New Testament does not outright do away with slavery. 00:04:42.06\00:04:47.91 You know, it didn't just say 00:04:47.94\00:04:51.78 "That's wrong. Don't do it. 00:04:51.81\00:04:53.73 Stop. Allow the slaves to go free". 00:04:53.76\00:04:55.60 You know, it doesn't say that. 00:04:55.63\00:04:57.61 Now, we have to place that in within context. 00:04:57.64\00:05:01.46 Slavery in the ancient world 00:05:01.49\00:05:05.94 was different than slavery in this country 00:05:05.97\00:05:10.76 in the United States 150, 200 years ago. 00:05:10.79\00:05:16.97 Slavery is, we can say, an evil in our world 00:05:17.00\00:05:20.97 that has existed in the world. 00:05:21.00\00:05:22.70 Now unfortunately it still continues 00:05:22.73\00:05:24.10 to exist in some places today. 00:05:24.13\00:05:25.93 Slavery is wrong. Slavery is an evil. 00:05:25.96\00:05:29.95 Bible religion worked to limit the evil 00:05:29.98\00:05:34.86 and to change and abolish it over time. 00:05:34.89\00:05:38.16 If you read the New Testament carefully 00:05:38.19\00:05:39.93 you will see that it undermines the concepts of slavery. Okay? 00:05:39.96\00:05:46.21 Now in the Greco-Roman world, as I said, slavery was different 00:05:46.24\00:05:51.19 than slavery was here in the United States. 00:05:51.22\00:05:53.27 How was it fdifferent? 00:05:53.30\00:05:55.00 Slaves could own property in that ancient world. 00:05:55.03\00:05:59.34 Slaves could own other slaves. 00:05:59.37\00:06:01.92 Some times slaves have very important positions as leaders, 00:06:01.95\00:06:06.55 even ambassadors, and education of slaves were encouraged. 00:06:06.58\00:06:11.59 People sold themselves or their children 00:06:11.62\00:06:14.19 sometimes into slavery. 00:06:14.22\00:06:17.59 Slaves had a place, they had a room, 00:06:17.62\00:06:20.04 they had board, they had a family 00:06:20.07\00:06:21.82 that they belong to and they were part of. 00:06:21.85\00:06:24.48 Most urban slaves in the ancient world were free 00:06:24.51\00:06:27.67 by the age of thirty. Okay? 00:06:27.70\00:06:30.91 But also of course there were abuses of slavery, 00:06:30.94\00:06:33.76 sexual use and sexual abuse of slaves, 00:06:33.79\00:06:36.52 mistreatment, and you know, these were all very wrong. 00:06:36.55\00:06:41.58 The use of ethical language in describing the masters 00:06:41.61\00:06:45.13 and their actions is interesting here. 00:06:45.16\00:06:48.82 I was confronted on this issue 00:06:48.85\00:06:51.06 as I was teaching this one time in class. 00:06:51.09\00:06:56.39 A student who was from another country 00:06:56.42\00:07:01.42 described the experience in his country 00:07:01.45\00:07:04.48 where there were marauding band of young men 00:07:04.51\00:07:07.43 who were intimidating people. 00:07:07.46\00:07:08.83 He was a student at that time. 00:07:08.86\00:07:11.76 A group of this marauding young man with weapons 00:07:11.79\00:07:15.36 came up to him and his friends and started to intimidate them 00:07:15.39\00:07:19.38 and they bravely withstood them. 00:07:19.41\00:07:21.82 And the students said to me, 00:07:21.85\00:07:23.83 "You can't just submit to these people. 00:07:23.86\00:07:25.44 You have to resist them." 00:07:25.47\00:07:28.12 And here I was in the class room. 00:07:28.15\00:07:30.34 You know, I wasn't going to say 00:07:30.37\00:07:31.85 "You are wrong," not obviously like that. 00:07:31.88\00:07:34.52 And I appreciate what he said because it forced me to go back 00:07:34.55\00:07:38.81 and look more closely at the language of 1 Peter. 00:07:38.84\00:07:42.43 And here is what I saw. 00:07:42.46\00:07:44.38 Peter never separates the language of submission 00:07:44.41\00:07:48.57 from the language of justice. 00:07:48.60\00:07:51.97 Peter never separates the language of submission 00:07:52.00\00:07:54.52 from the language of justice. 00:07:54.55\00:07:56.21 That is, there is a right and wrong. 00:07:56.24\00:07:59.42 A standard of right and wrong. 00:07:59.45\00:08:02.02 And you submit, but only to a point. 00:08:02.05\00:08:05.01 And you notice that when he describes 00:08:05.04\00:08:07.22 the masters what he says. 00:08:07.25\00:08:08.62 "Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, 00:08:08.65\00:08:11.03 not only to the good," now there's a moral word. 00:08:11.06\00:08:14.30 "And gentle but also to the unjust." 00:08:14.33\00:08:17.66 The crooked ones. He says what? 00:08:17.69\00:08:20.32 Keep reading, "For this is a--" 00:08:20.35\00:08:22.63 Well, my version says "a gracious thing." 00:08:22.66\00:08:26.03 What does yours say? Commendable. 00:08:26.06\00:08:28.79 Yeah, commendable is actually a better translation. 00:08:28.82\00:08:30.48 The term is the word "grace" Charis. 00:08:30.51\00:08:34.95 But, here the term grace 00:08:34.98\00:08:37.31 is being used in its secular sense, 00:08:37.34\00:08:39.48 which meant the idea of credit. Okay? 00:08:39.51\00:08:42.74 So, it's commendable, it is credit when you are doing 00:08:42.77\00:08:49.76 what is right and being unjustly treated. 00:08:49.79\00:08:56.07 Notice he says "You are suffering unjustly." 00:08:56.10\00:09:00.18 It's wrong what they are doing. 00:09:00.21\00:09:02.94 Now, there is another word here that's very fascinating. 00:09:02.97\00:09:06.32 It's the word "conscience". 00:09:06.35\00:09:09.15 Does yours have the word conscience? 00:09:09.18\00:09:10.55 It says conscience towards God. 00:09:10.58\00:09:12.14 Conscience towards God. 00:09:12.17\00:09:14.75 Tell me what is the conscience? 00:09:14.78\00:09:17.64 Well, the conscience is-- allows me to--I would say, 00:09:17.67\00:09:22.21 distinguish or discern between right and wrong. 00:09:22.24\00:09:25.67 Yeah. Okay, it's like an internal moral compass. Right? 00:09:25.70\00:09:29.50 If you can say that, yeah. 00:09:29.53\00:09:30.97 Yeah, like an internal moral compass 00:09:31.00\00:09:32.57 that points you in the right way. 00:09:32.60\00:09:34.71 In the ancient world they didn't think of it that way. 00:09:34.74\00:09:37.85 All right? The moral compass wasn't inside. 00:09:37.88\00:09:42.56 The moral compass was outside. 00:09:42.59\00:09:45.49 The moral compass was the values of your 00:09:45.52\00:09:50.10 primary group around you. All right? 00:09:50.13\00:09:54.41 So, he says here that your conscience-- 00:09:54.44\00:09:59.32 we would probably use the word conscious. 00:09:59.35\00:10:02.96 But conscious of the values, okay? 00:10:02.99\00:10:06.17 Your primary group has shifted. 00:10:06.20\00:10:11.70 Your primary group used to be the pagan culture around you. 00:10:11.73\00:10:15.35 And now it has shifted. 00:10:15.38\00:10:17.25 Now your primary group is not this group around you. 00:10:17.28\00:10:20.72 Your primary group is God. 00:10:20.75\00:10:23.07 And you're conscious of His value system. 00:10:23.10\00:10:27.10 That's what happened when you became a Christian. 00:10:27.13\00:10:29.13 When you became part of that community 00:10:29.16\00:10:30.75 and all that covenant ideas and built on them 00:10:30.78\00:10:32.83 and all those metaphors that we looked at, 00:10:32.86\00:10:34.44 all these beautiful metaphors, 00:10:34.47\00:10:35.84 you got a new consciousness of who God is, 00:10:35.87\00:10:39.71 and what His value system is. 00:10:39.74\00:10:42.01 And notice-- so, with that in mind 00:10:42.04\00:10:43.80 read this verse again you see. 00:10:43.83\00:10:45.29 He says, for this is commendable thing when mindful of God, 00:10:45.32\00:10:51.27 conscious of God one endures sorrows 00:10:51.30\00:10:54.68 while suffering unjustly. 00:10:54.71\00:10:57.44 They are trying to press you in to their mold. 00:10:57.47\00:11:02.81 But you are un-swayed because you are conscious of God 00:11:02.84\00:11:09.36 and of His value system. You see? 00:11:09.39\00:11:12.01 And so they don't affect you 00:11:12.04\00:11:13.41 because you see something better. 00:11:13.44\00:11:16.23 The marvelous light is shining into your heart 00:11:16.26\00:11:19.25 and it's keeping you from all those things 00:11:19.28\00:11:21.72 that are trying to get you to go the wrong way. 00:11:21.75\00:11:24.30 When they push and pull 00:11:24.33\00:11:26.15 and try to force you to go different ways. 00:11:26.18\00:11:29.13 And what about verse 20? 00:11:29.16\00:11:30.97 It talks a little of sinful behaviors. 00:11:31.00\00:11:33.75 Should we read that verse? Yes. 00:11:33.78\00:11:36.34 "For what credit is it if when you are beaten 00:11:36.37\00:11:39.28 by you faults you take it patiently. 00:11:39.31\00:11:41.74 But when you do good and suffer if you patiently 00:11:41.77\00:11:45.24 this is commendable before God." 00:11:45.27\00:11:48.02 Yes, you see now he contrasts bad behavior and good behavior. 00:11:48.05\00:11:52.66 Just like he's been doing already. 00:11:52.69\00:11:54.27 Good and bad. Good and bad. 00:11:54.30\00:11:56.00 All the time, you know? 00:11:56.03\00:11:57.40 And what's the Christians suppose to do, 00:11:57.43\00:11:59.21 embrace the good and eschew the bad. 00:11:59.24\00:12:02.24 Stay away from that which is bad, you see? 00:12:02.27\00:12:04.59 And hang on and link up to that which is good. 00:12:04.62\00:12:10.02 Why does suffering unjustly bring approval from God? 00:12:10.05\00:12:13.47 Well, this is a rather deep question. 00:12:13.50\00:12:16.04 And we're gonna unpack it more in the second half of this study 00:12:16.07\00:12:18.86 'cause we're gonna read the rest 00:12:18.89\00:12:20.26 of the passage in our next time around. 00:12:20.29\00:12:23.50 But we can return at this point to the language of justice. 00:12:23.53\00:12:27.51 When you do something righteous 00:12:27.54\00:12:30.27 and someone persecutes you for it that is wrong. 00:12:30.30\00:12:35.24 When you do what's right and they persecute you 00:12:35.27\00:12:36.72 for it that is wrong. 00:12:36.75\00:12:39.27 The world is expressing its values 00:12:39.30\00:12:42.13 and trying to force its perspective on you. 00:12:42.16\00:12:45.96 But God comes to the aid of His people 00:12:45.99\00:12:49.19 and affirms them with His values. 00:12:49.22\00:12:51.65 I am reminded of Daniel Chapter 7. 00:12:51.68\00:12:55.43 The four beasts are all chasing after the people of God. 00:12:55.46\00:13:00.28 And then the scene changes and it's the judgment scene, 00:13:00.31\00:13:04.34 the great judgment scene which we tend to be afraid of. 00:13:04.37\00:13:07.09 But in this judgment scene it says, 00:13:07.12\00:13:09.94 judgment was given in favor of the saints. 00:13:09.97\00:13:13.96 God comes to the aid of His people. 00:13:13.99\00:13:16.02 He comes to their rescue. 00:13:16.05\00:13:17.99 And so it is here the arbiter of the world, 00:13:18.02\00:13:21.47 the arbiter of all which is right 00:13:21.50\00:13:23.26 will come to the aid of His people. 00:13:23.29\00:13:25.30 He is standing by you when you are suffering, 00:13:25.33\00:13:28.23 when you are doing what's right 00:13:28.26\00:13:29.66 and somebody tries to force you to do what's wrong. 00:13:29.69\00:13:33.43 It's an amazing picture. 00:13:33.46\00:13:34.83 We're not done with this picture 00:13:34.86\00:13:36.23 because soon in our next program 00:13:36.26\00:13:39.43 we're gonna turn and see somebody 00:13:39.46\00:13:43.15 who led the way into the right path. 00:13:43.18\00:13:47.43 Dr. Shepherd, I want to thank you for joining us 00:13:47.46\00:13:49.56 and I also look forward to that next program. 00:13:49.59\00:13:51.89 And I'd like to take this moment to invite 00:13:51.92\00:13:53.93 our viewers to join us in this next program. 00:13:53.96\00:13:57.42 We are studying 1 Peter 00:13:57.45\00:13:59.32 and we're digging more into the word of God. 00:13:59.35\00:14:02.42 God bless you till next time. 00:14:02.45\00:14:04.01
