Hello, and welcome to "Books Of The Book". 00:00:22.43\00:00:24.66 My name is Deyvy Rodriguez and with us is Dr. Tom Shepherd. 00:00:24.69\00:00:28.32 He is currently a professor 00:00:28.35\00:00:29.72 of New Testament interpretation at Andrews University. 00:00:29.75\00:00:32.94 And now we are studying 00:00:32.97\00:00:34.34 the writings of the apostle Peter. 00:00:34.37\00:00:36.08 Welcome back again, Dr. Shepherd. 00:00:36.11\00:00:38.15 Could you outline it for us 00:00:38.18\00:00:39.55 how this section of the book unfolds? 00:00:39.58\00:00:42.31 Okay. Now, just to review, 00:00:42.34\00:00:45.09 if we look at the outline of the book of Peter, 00:00:45.12\00:00:47.34 here we have a graphic that shows us this. 00:00:47.37\00:00:50.16 We have been studying the first section of the book, 00:00:50.19\00:00:53.31 which is Chapter 1:1-2:10 00:00:53.34\00:00:58.54 that's establishing the household of God. 00:00:58.57\00:01:00.19 We've seen the beautiful lay out 00:01:00.22\00:01:02.91 that he has of the rebirth experience, 00:01:02.94\00:01:05.20 the metaphors of growth, the household of God, 00:01:05.23\00:01:08.53 and now we come to the second section which is part B. 00:01:08.56\00:01:12.04 And in this second section of the outline 00:01:12.07\00:01:17.72 we see that he has-- 00:01:17.75\00:01:20.40 "how Christians are to live in the world." 00:01:20.43\00:01:24.07 This central section of the book goes from chapter 2:11-4:11. 00:01:24.10\00:01:30.71 And he's going to talk about relating to people around us, 00:01:30.74\00:01:34.52 who are mostly out side the church, 00:01:34.55\00:01:37.71 vindication that is coming and then more instruction 00:01:37.74\00:01:40.88 about living as a Christian. 00:01:40.91\00:01:42.37 Then we'll see later on where he'll come to the last part 00:01:42.40\00:01:45.23 about facing trouble and facing each other, 00:01:45.26\00:01:47.51 that's the very last section of the book. 00:01:47.54\00:01:49.61 But right now we're just entering 00:01:49.64\00:01:51.38 in to this central portion of the book. 00:01:51.41\00:01:55.75 And so we want to take a look 00:01:55.78\00:01:57.97 and see what the apostle Peter has to say here. 00:01:58.00\00:02:02.19 Okay, where are we picking up on? 00:02:02.22\00:02:04.00 So we're gonna pick up in verses 11 and 12 of chapter 2. 00:02:04.03\00:02:08.11 So, if you'll read for us 1 Peter 2:11, 12. 00:02:08.14\00:02:14.67 "Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, 00:02:14.70\00:02:18.14 abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, 00:02:18.17\00:02:22.73 having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, 00:02:22.76\00:02:26.10 that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, 00:02:26.13\00:02:29.87 by your good works which they observe, 00:02:29.90\00:02:32.81 glorify God in the day of visitation." 00:02:32.84\00:02:36.16 Okay, Now have you-- did you notice any words in here 00:02:36.19\00:02:39.57 that we've heard before in this book. 00:02:39.60\00:02:42.77 Yeah, conduct, I think we read that verse previously. 00:02:42.80\00:02:47.22 Conduct or conduct among the gentiles, 00:02:47.25\00:02:49.70 any thing else that it said. Sojourners, pilgrims. 00:02:49.73\00:02:52.23 Sojourners, pilgrims, that's exactly right. 00:02:52.26\00:02:54.54 You are the Sojourners and pilgrims you see-- 00:02:54.57\00:02:56.60 Now in this verse he uses Sojourners 00:02:56.63\00:02:58.55 whereas at first he only said pilgrims. 00:02:58.58\00:03:01.98 Yeah, he has-- he has several terms 00:03:02.01\00:03:05.15 that he uses for this kind of experience 00:03:05.18\00:03:08.08 of not fitting in with the world 00:03:08.11\00:03:10.93 and being, you know, strange to them. 00:03:10.96\00:03:14.89 So remember it is because 00:03:14.92\00:03:17.89 you are the chosen people of God 00:03:17.92\00:03:20.40 that you are a stranger in the world. 00:03:20.43\00:03:23.62 So, now he is reminding them of this again, 00:03:23.65\00:03:27.46 he is transitioning from the first section 00:03:27.49\00:03:29.67 where he's defined the church, the people-- 00:03:29.70\00:03:32.59 the household of God, and now he is saying, 00:03:32.62\00:03:34.48 "Okay, so now, tell what are you supposed to do 00:03:34.51\00:03:36.91 in relationship to them?" 00:03:36.94\00:03:38.52 And of course he makes this emphasis 00:03:38.55\00:03:42.22 on conduct once again, doesn't he. 00:03:42.25\00:03:44.64 He says to abstain from the passions of the flesh. 00:03:44.67\00:03:47.26 Well, he talked about those. 00:03:47.29\00:03:49.11 They wage war against to your soul. 00:03:49.14\00:03:51.36 He says, "Keep your conduct among the gentiles honorable. 00:03:51.39\00:03:55.34 So that when they speak against you as evil doers 00:03:55.37\00:03:58.91 they may see your good deeds 00:03:58.94\00:04:00.53 and glorify God on the day of visitation." 00:04:00.56\00:04:02.66 So, your good deeds as a Christian 00:04:02.69\00:04:05.46 has some kind of impact on the world around. 00:04:05.49\00:04:08.86 Now, it doesn't mean that every body 00:04:08.89\00:04:10.26 in the world around will be saved. 00:04:10.29\00:04:11.72 But there are those who will be saved, 00:04:11.75\00:04:14.37 will be drawn into this fellowship of faith 00:04:14.40\00:04:16.85 as they see your conduct, you know, that stands out. 00:04:16.88\00:04:21.09 So this transitional part, you know, 00:04:21.12\00:04:24.55 leads us into the next part. 00:04:24.58\00:04:25.95 And he talks about the contrast of the Christian to the world 00:04:25.98\00:04:29.53 and he talks about the role of our way of life. 00:04:29.56\00:04:32.90 And that's gonna become an important theme 00:04:32.93\00:04:35.74 in this second section of the book 00:04:35.77\00:04:37.64 that we turned to now. 00:04:37.67\00:04:39.06 And that starts in Chapter 2:13 00:04:39.09\00:04:44.10 so we want to read verses 13-17. 00:04:44.13\00:04:48.92 "Therefore submit yourselves 00:04:48.95\00:04:50.85 to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake, 00:04:50.88\00:04:53.58 whether to the king as supreme, or to governors, 00:04:53.61\00:04:57.10 as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers 00:04:57.13\00:05:01.15 and for the praise of those who do good. 00:05:01.18\00:05:03.80 For this is the will of God, that by doing good 00:05:03.83\00:05:06.82 you may put to silence 00:05:06.85\00:05:08.42 the ignorance of foolish me as free, 00:05:08.45\00:05:11.56 yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, 00:05:11.59\00:05:14.90 but as bondservants of God. 00:05:14.93\00:05:17.56 Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. 00:05:17.59\00:05:20.43 Fear God. Honor the king." 00:05:20.46\00:05:22.77 So, seems like our life style is a form of witnessing them. 00:05:22.80\00:05:27.88 Absolutely. Yeah. Definitely. 00:05:27.91\00:05:30.03 That's important theme for Peter. 00:05:30.06\00:05:34.32 This is part of the answer to this question of holiness 00:05:34.35\00:05:37.79 and connection or linkage or facing the world, you see? 00:05:37.82\00:05:43.27 And that is that the holy lifestyle 00:05:43.30\00:05:46.80 is to face the worlds. 00:05:46.83\00:05:49.50 The world around us-- now people might say, 00:05:49.53\00:05:52.67 "Well Peters, people, couldn't escape the world 00:05:52.70\00:05:54.44 because, you know, they were 1 in 100. 00:05:54.47\00:05:57.08 So, 99% of the people around them were not Christian." 00:05:57.11\00:06:01.88 You know, but, there is no excuse 00:06:01.91\00:06:05.07 for going often being hermits, you see? 00:06:05.10\00:06:07.22 Peter doesn't have that kind of approach. 00:06:07.25\00:06:09.23 He talks about a holy lifestyle that faces them, 00:06:09.26\00:06:12.33 that is in contact with them all the time, 00:06:12.36\00:06:15.24 is in touch with the world around. 00:06:15.27\00:06:17.00 We separate ourselves too much from the world. 00:06:17.03\00:06:20.95 We go often to little enclaves, you know, or ghettos, 00:06:20.98\00:06:26.76 you know, and stay to ourselves. 00:06:26.79\00:06:30.01 No, we need to have contact 00:06:30.04\00:06:32.08 with people that are part of the world. 00:06:32.11\00:06:34.97 Because guess what, the light has an impact. 00:06:35.00\00:06:38.45 The light has an influence. 00:06:38.48\00:06:39.85 It draws people, you know? 00:06:39.88\00:06:42.23 Now, of course there are some people 00:06:42.26\00:06:43.63 who don't like the light. 00:06:43.66\00:06:45.03 Jesus said that. You know, they like the darkness. 00:06:45.06\00:06:47.38 But, those who are attracted to light, 00:06:47.41\00:06:49.98 boy, when the light comes, 00:06:50.01\00:06:51.79 they're just really touched by it. 00:06:51.82\00:06:53.49 Remember, Peter called it 00:06:53.52\00:06:54.89 "marvelous light, "marvelous light. 00:06:54.92\00:06:58.03 Now, we've got to think some about the government officials 00:06:58.06\00:07:02.31 that are mentioned here in these verses. 00:07:02.34\00:07:06.33 It's very interesting. He uses--my translation says, 00:07:06.36\00:07:11.28 "Be subject for the Lord's sake," in verse 13. 00:07:11.31\00:07:14.03 What does yours say? "Submit yourselves." 00:07:14.06\00:07:16.14 "Submit yourselves." Yeah. 00:07:16.17\00:07:17.89 This is going to be an overarching theme 00:07:17.92\00:07:20.49 in this section, the concept of submission. 00:07:20.52\00:07:23.21 It's kind of a dirty word 00:07:23.24\00:07:24.67 for some people in the Christian church today. 00:07:24.70\00:07:26.86 They don't like this idea of submission. 00:07:26.89\00:07:29.16 But Peter has said-- he makes this quite a big theme, 00:07:29.19\00:07:34.61 and frankly all of us in life who are in one place or another 00:07:34.64\00:07:38.34 find ourselves in a position where we have to submit. 00:07:38.37\00:07:42.48 For most of us it's in the work place. 00:07:42.51\00:07:45.17 There is a boss. 00:07:45.20\00:07:47.23 And he says, "I want you to do this." 00:07:47.26\00:07:48.63 And you say, "Okay, boss, sure we do." 00:07:48.66\00:07:51.99 You're submitting to the boss. 00:07:52.02\00:07:53.40 So, interestingly, Peter says that we are to be subject 00:07:53.43\00:07:57.25 for the Lord's sake to every human, what? 00:07:57.28\00:08:02.23 What's the term in your passage? 00:08:02.26\00:08:05.94 "For the Lord's sake, whether for ordinance of men." 00:08:05.97\00:08:09.78 Ordinance of men. 00:08:09.81\00:08:11.63 A lot of these mind sets to every human institution. 00:08:11.66\00:08:15.13 Now, the word institution here is a very interesting word. 00:08:15.16\00:08:20.46 It is the word creation. 00:08:20.49\00:08:24.66 Institution is for creation-- 00:08:24.69\00:08:27.71 The underline Greek word Ktisis means creature or creation. 00:08:27.74\00:08:33.80 Okay. 00:08:33.83\00:08:35.20 Now, this is--some people say, "Well, you know, 00:08:35.23\00:08:38.88 it's a human creation so then it must be a human institution 00:08:38.91\00:08:41.92 and then he is talking about government officials, 00:08:41.95\00:08:44.18 so he must be talking about institutions of the state. 00:08:44.21\00:08:46.84 Right?" Well, yes and no. 00:08:46.87\00:08:50.87 All right. The word creation implies, what? 00:08:50.90\00:08:56.28 A Creator? Creator. 00:08:56.31\00:08:59.00 Right. A creator. 00:08:59.03\00:09:01.23 So, the human creation 00:09:01.26\00:09:05.35 or creature is not the creator. 00:09:05.38\00:09:11.71 Now, you and I would say, "Well, duh." 00:09:11.74\00:09:17.12 Obvious, right? 00:09:17.15\00:09:19.21 That all humans are under God. 00:09:19.24\00:09:21.69 One nation under God 00:09:21.72\00:09:23.09 is in the American Pledge of Allegiance, right? 00:09:23.12\00:09:26.66 That idea is such a radical idea that God is the creator 00:09:26.69\00:09:34.08 and all of creation is below him. 00:09:34.11\00:09:37.14 Now, in the ancient world, particularly in the east 00:09:37.17\00:09:41.30 and of course we are talking about a place 00:09:41.33\00:09:42.92 that was in the east, 00:09:42.95\00:09:44.51 they had some thing called the emperor cult 00:09:44.54\00:09:47.81 where they would worship the emperor. 00:09:47.84\00:09:50.92 And so, actually this becomes more of practice, 00:09:50.95\00:09:56.58 I think as time goes by. 00:09:56.61\00:09:58.65 In the second century we have an interesting story 00:09:58.68\00:10:00.65 of a man named Polycarp who refuses to offer incense. 00:10:00.68\00:10:07.64 Now, what was this incense that they were offering? 00:10:07.67\00:10:10.37 If you read his story-- it's a beautiful story. 00:10:10.40\00:10:12.24 You can find it on the web if you want, or in books, 00:10:12.27\00:10:14.74 "The Martyrdom of Polycarp." 00:10:14.77\00:10:16.27 He was the bishop of the Church of Smyrna. 00:10:16.30\00:10:18.38 He was in his 80's, 86 years old. 00:10:18.41\00:10:21.25 And they bring him-- they're gonna force him- 00:10:21.28\00:10:23.33 they're gonna either kill him or force him to offer incense. 00:10:23.36\00:10:26.57 What's the incense? What is he offering incense to? 00:10:26.60\00:10:29.80 He is offering incense to the guardian deity 00:10:29.83\00:10:33.17 of the emperor called the genius. 00:10:33.20\00:10:36.78 The genius of the emperor 00:10:36.81\00:10:38.18 was the guardian deity of the emperor. 00:10:38.21\00:10:40.69 And so you would offer incense-- it was kind of like 00:10:40.72\00:10:43.81 pledging allegiance to the flag or it was kind of like, 00:10:43.84\00:10:47.28 you know, showing that you were-- 00:10:47.31\00:10:51.20 you accepted the state, you were patriotic. 00:10:51.23\00:10:55.45 But a Christian couldn't do that. 00:10:55.48\00:10:57.18 Because Christians didn't believe in these false gods. 00:10:57.21\00:11:00.94 So, they couldn't offer the incense 00:11:00.97\00:11:03.48 and so the roman officials took this as rebellion 00:11:03.51\00:11:06.29 against the state, you see? 00:11:06.32\00:11:10.06 So, here is this institutions of the state 00:11:10.09\00:11:16.06 and they are not supreme. 00:11:16.09\00:11:18.48 That's the important idea. They are not supreme. 00:11:18.51\00:11:20.68 Now, Peter takes and he reorders all of powers structures. 00:11:20.71\00:11:24.53 You have to study the whole idea of power all through his books. 00:11:24.56\00:11:27.46 But we have graphic that shows three different power structures 00:11:27.49\00:11:31.49 within the state and the first one 00:11:31.52\00:11:35.00 is the super-ordinate power structures. 00:11:35.03\00:11:38.40 There you see at the top is God. And Christ, the Holy Spirit. 00:11:38.43\00:11:42.93 The devil is there, so are spirits and angels. 00:11:42.96\00:11:44.90 These all appear somewhere in 1 Peter 00:11:44.93\00:11:47.11 and they all have different descriptions 00:11:47.14\00:11:48.87 and they are all supporting concepts that support them. 00:11:48.90\00:11:52.55 These are structures that are above the human level, 00:11:52.58\00:11:55.62 Then next one of a slide shows ordinate power structures. 00:11:55.65\00:12:01.24 And these are kings and masters and husbands and elders. 00:12:01.27\00:12:04.48 These are people who are in-- 00:12:04.51\00:12:05.88 we might called middle management. 00:12:05.91\00:12:08.29 They are above the rest of us humans 00:12:08.32\00:12:10.51 but they are below God. Okay? 00:12:10.54\00:12:13.18 Then the group that he has the most to say to, 00:12:13.21\00:12:15.76 are the subordinate people, 00:12:15.79\00:12:17.71 the people who are at the bottom of the totem pole, 00:12:17.74\00:12:20.19 you might say. 00:12:20.22\00:12:21.59 And these include you, as a Christians, 00:12:21.62\00:12:24.12 all Christians, the savants, the wives, 00:12:24.15\00:12:26.50 and the young people and they are all called on 00:12:26.53\00:12:28.96 to submit to the powers that are above them. 00:12:28.99\00:12:31.46 But there is one important concept 00:12:31.49\00:12:34.80 that we have to keep in mind here about this, 00:12:34.83\00:12:37.83 and that is the God is at the pinnacle power 00:12:37.86\00:12:41.50 and every thing else is below him. 00:12:41.53\00:12:43.58 So, Peter subverts the power structures 00:12:43.61\00:12:48.67 of the Roman Empire while at the same time telling 00:12:48.70\00:12:54.29 the Christian people to submit to these power structures. 00:12:54.32\00:13:00.00 It's amazing. 00:13:00.03\00:13:01.45 You know, he subverts the power structures 00:13:01.48\00:13:04.41 while at the same time telling people to be good citizen. 00:13:04.44\00:13:09.14 Well, why don't we talk more about this-- 00:13:09.17\00:13:11.33 this power structure and submitting to authorities 00:13:11.36\00:13:15.08 after we take a short break and we'll be right back. 00:13:15.11\00:13:18.44
