Welcome back. Dr. Shepherd, um, a question, 00:00:01.40\00:00:04.64 why don't some people like religion? 00:00:04.67\00:00:08.00 Uh, you know, it's a really big question. 00:00:08.03\00:00:09.73 People have all kinds of reasons why they don't like religion. 00:00:09.76\00:00:13.52 Um, usually, there's a story there. 00:00:13.55\00:00:16.74 And I think when in life we find somebody 00:00:16.77\00:00:19.24 who doesn't like religion, doesn't like the church, 00:00:19.27\00:00:22.87 the first thing, the best thing to do 00:00:22.90\00:00:25.31 to begin with is to listen. 00:00:25.34\00:00:27.83 And the easiest way to listen is to, say, "Oh, why is that?" 00:00:27.86\00:00:34.97 And they'll tell you 'cause, yeah, particularly if they, 00:00:35.00\00:00:40.52 you know, come at you with something 00:00:40.55\00:00:41.98 that's because they've been hurt some place in their life. 00:00:42.01\00:00:43.90 So there really is a story behind the reason 00:00:43.93\00:00:46.21 why they don't like religion-- 00:00:46.24\00:00:47.61 There's almost always some story-- 00:00:47.64\00:00:49.06 Almost always some kind of history-- 00:00:49.09\00:00:51.53 But here's one of the reasons why, "one of the stories." 00:00:51.56\00:00:56.33 And that is because the church and its truth. 00:00:56.36\00:00:59.91 You know, we make lots of mistakes in the church 00:00:59.94\00:01:01.93 but the truth-- the church in its truth 00:01:01.96\00:01:04.48 stands for something that's right and holy. 00:01:04.51\00:01:07.64 And that is an offense to the world. 00:01:07.67\00:01:10.85 And it's just like a bird under the saddle. 00:01:10.88\00:01:14.91 It just bothers them that there's somebody who says, 00:01:14.94\00:01:18.37 "No, that's wrong. 00:01:18.40\00:01:20.14 You should not to do that." 00:01:20.17\00:01:21.54 See in a postmodern world, 00:01:21.57\00:01:23.75 most people want to say that 00:01:23.78\00:01:25.92 there's no subtle truth at all, you see. 00:01:25.95\00:01:28.18 And for you to say, "Uh, you know, actually there is." 00:01:28.21\00:01:31.69 And to describe it and everything that, 00:01:31.72\00:01:33.76 that kind of gets them a bit on edge. 00:01:33.79\00:01:35.36 Now I don't think we're supposed to go out 00:01:35.39\00:01:37.11 and to hit people over the head 00:01:37.14\00:01:39.62 and to try to force them to things 00:01:39.65\00:01:41.97 but we should understand. 00:01:42.00\00:01:44.31 We should understand the offense that is the cross. 00:01:44.34\00:01:48.20 The cross is opposed to the world. 00:01:48.23\00:01:52.03 It stands for death to self. 00:01:52.06\00:01:54.35 It stands for dedication to God. 00:01:54.38\00:01:56.79 And that's why some people don't like 00:01:56.82\00:02:00.58 religion or the church. 00:02:00.61\00:02:02.69 Dr. Shepherd, the passage we've read makes a division 00:02:02.72\00:02:05.30 between people and what is this all about? 00:02:05.33\00:02:08.66 Okay, so let's look back at the passage again, 00:02:08.69\00:02:10.52 so we can get that clearly in mind. 00:02:10.55\00:02:13.03 We finished by reading the passage from Isaiah, 00:02:13.06\00:02:18.05 those passages from Isaiah 00:02:18.08\00:02:19.81 where the people of Israel were going one way 00:02:19.84\00:02:21.89 and God was really going a different way. 00:02:21.92\00:02:24.19 And he says, look, I've laid down my truth 00:02:24.22\00:02:27.55 as this cornerstone and everything will be measured 00:02:27.58\00:02:31.64 by this stone that I've laid down. 00:02:31.67\00:02:34.38 Now Peter comes and he says, 00:02:34.41\00:02:36.16 "Uh, let me tell you who that stone is. 00:02:36.19\00:02:38.88 It's Jesus." 00:02:38.91\00:02:40.58 It's Jesus who is a living stone 00:02:40.61\00:02:43.75 because God raised Him from the dead. 00:02:43.78\00:02:45.93 That was the great seal of God upon the ministry of Jesus. 00:02:45.96\00:02:51.27 He raised Him from the dead. 00:02:51.30\00:02:53.07 And so what he had said was true. 00:02:53.10\00:02:55.05 And the world must, you know, take that into account. 00:02:55.08\00:02:59.14 So he has this, he says, "I've laid a stone in Zion, 00:02:59.17\00:03:03.52 a cornerstone"-- I'm looking at verse 6, 00:03:03.55\00:03:06.20 "chosen and precious, and whoever believes in Him 00:03:06.23\00:03:09.59 will not be put to shame." 00:03:09.62\00:03:12.92 Now you need to understand that the ancient world 00:03:12.95\00:03:16.80 in which Peter lived was a honor and shame culture, 00:03:16.83\00:03:24.52 honor and shame, what did that mean? 00:03:24.55\00:03:27.68 Well, there were certain values that they had 00:03:27.71\00:03:31.70 and what you would do in your life, 00:03:31.73\00:03:35.48 your practices, your business, 00:03:35.51\00:03:38.27 the way you related to other people, 00:03:38.30\00:03:40.34 you did things to bring honor to your name and your family. 00:03:40.37\00:03:46.68 And then there were shameful things 00:03:46.71\00:03:49.37 and those were the things that you avoided, you see. 00:03:49.40\00:03:53.17 You avoided shame and you chased after honor, okay. 00:03:53.20\00:03:57.91 So one would bring you up higher, 00:03:57.94\00:04:00.13 the other would take you lower. 00:04:00.16\00:04:02.17 Now in such a society in which Peter lived, 00:04:02.20\00:04:06.27 the deepest shame that could be brought upon 00:04:06.30\00:04:09.52 you was crucifixion really. 00:04:09.55\00:04:12.29 Typically, the Romans would crucify people naked 00:04:12.32\00:04:16.12 to shame them in public. 00:04:16.15\00:04:17.54 It was done in public. 00:04:17.57\00:04:19.28 They were exposed to the elements 00:04:19.31\00:04:21.35 and the Romans were intimidating the population saying, 00:04:21.38\00:04:24.42 "Look, if you do whatever this person did, 00:04:24.45\00:04:27.12 that's what's gonna happen to you. 00:04:27.15\00:04:28.52 So you do the shameful acts, 00:04:28.55\00:04:29.92 we will shame you, give you the ultimate shame." 00:04:29.95\00:04:32.27 Now the pagan culture was going one way 00:04:32.30\00:04:34.79 and Christian values went in an opposite direction 00:04:34.82\00:04:38.22 and a different direction. 00:04:38.25\00:04:39.86 So the pagans would try to shame the Christians. 00:04:39.89\00:04:43.56 We'll see that as we continue to read through this book 00:04:43.59\00:04:46.50 they were shaming-- trying to shame these people 00:04:46.53\00:04:49.12 and the natural tendency of our life is 00:04:49.15\00:04:55.74 to listen to the people around us. 00:04:55.77\00:04:57.81 We're much more impacted by those around us 00:04:57.84\00:05:00.41 than we like to admit. 00:05:00.44\00:05:02.90 And so Peter is trying to build these people up 00:05:02.93\00:05:06.72 with all this rich deep theology. 00:05:06.75\00:05:08.94 He's trying to build them up, 00:05:08.97\00:05:10.34 so that they get the right perspective on this. 00:05:10.37\00:05:12.19 So they don't go honoring 00:05:12.22\00:05:14.80 the things that God says are shameful and, 00:05:14.83\00:05:19.68 you know, going the wrong direction. 00:05:19.71\00:05:21.78 So he says whoever trusts in Him 00:05:21.81\00:05:24.39 will not be put to shame. 00:05:24.42\00:05:27.27 So if you trust in Jesus, the crucified Messiah, 00:05:27.30\00:05:31.33 you will not be put to shame. 00:05:31.36\00:05:33.36 And we'll see as we go through this book how the life of Jesus, 00:05:33.39\00:05:37.52 the experience of Jesus becomes the life 00:05:37.55\00:05:39.42 and experience of the Christian where they follow in His steps. 00:05:39.45\00:05:42.96 They follow in His pattern and the glory that He receives 00:05:42.99\00:05:45.85 is what they will receive in the end, okay. 00:05:45.88\00:05:49.22 Let's go back to verse 8. 00:05:49.25\00:05:51.04 Does this verse teach that 00:05:51.07\00:05:52.44 God has destined some people to reject Christ? All right. 00:05:52.47\00:05:57.15 So we have the division of people 00:05:57.18\00:06:00.19 that we've talked about. 00:06:00.22\00:06:01.59 We have those who do not believe and we have those who believe. 00:06:01.62\00:06:05.46 And when we get down to verse-- 00:06:05.49\00:06:09.24 well, let's start verse 7. 00:06:09.27\00:06:10.64 It says, "So the honor is for you who believe, 00:06:10.67\00:06:13.78 but for those who do not believe, 00:06:13.81\00:06:16.09 the stone that the builders rejected 00:06:16.12\00:06:17.64 has become the cornerstone." 00:06:17.67\00:06:19.63 Verse 8, "And a stone of stumbling 00:06:19.66\00:06:21.29 and a rock of offense. 00:06:21.32\00:06:23.37 They stumble because they disobey the word." 00:06:23.40\00:06:27.90 My Bible says next, "As they were destined to do." 00:06:27.93\00:06:33.07 What does yours say in verse 8? 00:06:33.10\00:06:34.57 Read verse 8 in New King James. 00:06:34.60\00:06:36.82 "And a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense." Keep going. 00:06:36.85\00:06:41.63 "They stumble, being disobedient to the word, 00:06:41.66\00:06:44.87 to which they also were appointed." Okay. 00:06:44.90\00:06:48.54 So here you have a description of the builders. 00:06:48.57\00:06:52.47 Now builders are honorable people. 00:06:52.50\00:06:55.67 Builders are the people who are making the building. 00:06:55.70\00:06:58.30 And you expect them to understand everything 00:06:58.33\00:07:00.49 about the building and what are they doing? 00:07:00.52\00:07:04.31 They're rejecting the cornerstone. 00:07:04.34\00:07:07.46 There's this old story that 00:07:07.49\00:07:08.91 when they were building Solomon's temple 00:07:08.94\00:07:10.59 that they needed the cornerstone 00:07:10.62\00:07:14.10 and there was this one stone that they rejected, 00:07:14.13\00:07:17.31 they keep rejecting it and this was in the way. 00:07:17.34\00:07:20.83 And then they find out that that's the stone 00:07:20.86\00:07:23.06 that's supposed to be the cornerstone. 00:07:23.09\00:07:24.84 That's the one that's supposed to be bear the most weight, 00:07:24.87\00:07:27.38 you know, it sets the whole thing all up. 00:07:27.41\00:07:30.13 So it was interesting because the rejection of the stone 00:07:30.16\00:07:34.30 and then that becomes the chosen stone. 00:07:34.33\00:07:36.38 So what is negated becomes that which is positive. 00:07:36.41\00:07:40.93 So that which is shameful becomes that which is honored. 00:07:40.96\00:07:44.07 That which is rejected 00:07:44.10\00:07:45.47 becomes that which is accepted, all right. 00:07:45.50\00:07:47.64 So but it was the builders who didn't accept it. 00:07:47.67\00:07:51.36 And, Dr. Shepherd, it almost sounds like 00:07:51.39\00:07:52.86 they're deliberately rejecting it 00:07:52.89\00:07:54.82 because as builders you know what you're doing. 00:07:54.85\00:07:57.39 Yeah. Isn't that right? 00:07:57.42\00:07:58.79 You should know what you're doing, yes. 00:07:58.82\00:08:00.92 Here it says, they stumble over, why did they stumble? 00:08:00.95\00:08:03.93 It says because they disobey the word 00:08:03.96\00:08:09.21 and then it says as they were destined to do. 00:08:09.24\00:08:11.73 Now this gets many people, 00:08:11.76\00:08:13.98 you know, really tied up in knots 00:08:14.01\00:08:15.63 because it sounds like predestination. 00:08:15.66\00:08:18.55 Like some people were just, 00:08:18.58\00:08:20.01 you know, God just said, you know, they're gonna be lost 00:08:20.04\00:08:24.18 and I'll just do that. 00:08:24.21\00:08:27.23 I'll just destine them for destruction. 00:08:27.26\00:08:31.85 And that seems so odd and so unlike God, 00:08:31.88\00:08:35.75 how could he do that? 00:08:35.78\00:08:37.15 Well, what you have to understand is going on here 00:08:37.18\00:08:39.73 is a play on words, okay. 00:08:39.76\00:08:42.77 And a play on words, the Greek word is "Tithemi" 00:08:42.80\00:08:45.94 and the word means to place or put. 00:08:45.97\00:08:49.33 Mm-hmm. Okay. 00:08:49.36\00:08:50.88 And this verb is used several times 00:08:50.91\00:08:54.62 in this passage, all right. 00:08:54.65\00:08:56.43 So the first place where we notice 00:08:56.46\00:08:59.36 this is in verse 6. 00:08:59.39\00:09:06.35 "Behold, I am laying in Zion, a stone, 00:09:06.38\00:09:12.17 a cornerstone, chosen and precious." Okay. 00:09:12.20\00:09:15.11 So he is placing a stone, all right. 00:09:15.14\00:09:21.87 God is placing a stone. 00:09:21.90\00:09:23.78 Now in verse 8, it says, 00:09:23.81\00:09:26.91 "They stumbled because they disobeyed the word, 00:09:26.94\00:09:29.92 as they were placed to do." Okay. 00:09:29.95\00:09:37.89 So here's the interesting play on this whole concept. 00:09:37.92\00:09:44.31 God has not destined anybody for destruction or salvation, 00:09:44.34\00:09:49.10 did not destine them for that. 00:09:49.13\00:09:51.62 He has laid the cornerstone. 00:09:51.65\00:09:54.81 The question is what will you do with the cornerstone? 00:09:54.84\00:09:58.02 What He has destined is what will happen 00:09:58.05\00:10:04.03 according to whatever you do in relationship to that stone 00:10:04.06\00:10:06.93 'cause He's got the plumb line, right? 00:10:06.96\00:10:08.54 And He's placed the stone. 00:10:08.57\00:10:10.11 So if you build on the stone, that's good, you'll be fine. 00:10:10.14\00:10:14.01 If you reject the stone, it's you who will be rejected 00:10:14.04\00:10:18.43 not because God predestined that you would be rejected 00:10:18.46\00:10:21.95 but because God predestined this stone would be the cornerstone. 00:10:21.98\00:10:25.24 There's only one cornerstone. 00:10:25.27\00:10:27.10 There's only one way to heaven and that's through Jesus Christ. 00:10:27.13\00:10:30.30 So God has placed that here 00:10:30.33\00:10:31.98 and your reaction to the stone 00:10:32.01\00:10:34.88 in believing or disbelieving 00:10:34.91\00:10:36.99 is what predetermines your outcome. 00:10:37.02\00:10:39.53 So if I'm lost is because I made that decision to be lost? 00:10:39.56\00:10:43.72 Yes. It's not God's fault-- 00:10:43.75\00:10:45.15 It's not God's fault. My fault-- 00:10:45.18\00:10:46.68 Yeah, so using the term destined here 00:10:46.71\00:10:48.87 might not be the best choice of terms. 00:10:48.90\00:10:51.51 As long as--it's okay as long as you understand 00:10:51.54\00:10:54.34 that the destiny is not that you are destined 00:10:54.37\00:10:58.53 whatever you want to do. 00:10:58.56\00:11:00.01 You're destined to be lost or you're destined to be safe 00:11:00.04\00:11:02.75 but rather that God has presettled 00:11:02.78\00:11:06.00 what will happen to those who accept 00:11:06.03\00:11:08.25 or those who reject, okay. 00:11:08.28\00:11:10.32 Now we turn to the good news which is down in verses 9 and 10 00:11:10.35\00:11:14.24 and we should read those verses one more time. 00:11:14.27\00:11:16.75 "But you are a chosen generation, 00:11:16.78\00:11:18.84 a royal priesthood, a holy nation, 00:11:18.87\00:11:21.26 his own special people that you may proclaim the praises of Him 00:11:21.29\00:11:25.82 who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light, 00:11:25.85\00:11:29.57 who once were not a people but are now the people of God, 00:11:29.60\00:11:34.29 who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy." 00:11:34.32\00:11:39.55 Do these verses 9 through 10 00:11:39.58\00:11:41.79 teach that priesthood of all believers? 00:11:41.82\00:11:45.38 No, the terminology the priesthood of all believers, 00:11:45.41\00:11:48.71 you see, a concept from the Protestant Reformation 00:11:48.74\00:11:52.83 and it was a rejection of some things 00:11:52.86\00:11:57.62 that were taught by our catholic friends. 00:11:57.65\00:12:00.35 And Luther was a real strong emphasis 00:12:00.38\00:12:03.31 on this the priesthood of all believers. 00:12:03.34\00:12:05.56 You can say the priesthood of all believers is taught here, 00:12:05.59\00:12:08.39 if you think in terms of all believers together 00:12:08.42\00:12:12.17 as a community 'cause this is not talking about 00:12:12.20\00:12:14.61 individual priests or individual people all just by themselves. 00:12:14.64\00:12:18.07 This is a community together. 00:12:18.10\00:12:20.42 It's very communal kind of a concept of people together. 00:12:20.45\00:12:23.69 But sort of an individual, you know, 00:12:23.72\00:12:25.74 off on your own personal decisions-- 00:12:25.77\00:12:28.32 no, not so much that. 00:12:28.35\00:12:30.43 He really links together here wonderful ideas 00:12:30.46\00:12:34.42 from the Exodus story and God's chosen people at that time 00:12:34.45\00:12:39.14 and the beautiful story of Hosea 00:12:39.17\00:12:41.58 when these people are brought back to God. 00:12:41.61\00:12:44.23 Remember the story of Hosea where he marries-- 00:12:44.26\00:12:48.16 he's told by God to marry this prostitute. 00:12:48.19\00:12:50.00 She goes off and does terrible things 00:12:50.03\00:12:52.88 but then he goes to the slave market 00:12:52.91\00:12:55.37 and there is Gomer, his wife, and he buys her back. 00:12:55.40\00:12:59.14 He redeems her. 00:12:59.17\00:13:00.54 It's an illustration of God redeeming the world, 00:13:00.57\00:13:03.70 bringing it back to himself and he says, 00:13:03.73\00:13:06.53 "You were those people, you had gone astray." 00:13:06.56\00:13:09.71 He says but God has brought you into his marvelous light. 00:13:09.74\00:13:14.06 You know, listen, friends, 00:13:14.09\00:13:16.50 God has given marvelous light to the world. 00:13:16.53\00:13:19.28 He sent it to you. He sent it to me. 00:13:19.31\00:13:21.67 It's here in His word. 00:13:21.70\00:13:23.22 It's meant to draw us back to Him. 00:13:23.25\00:13:25.90 We need to value this wonderful and marvelous word 00:13:25.93\00:13:29.31 as we continue to study 00:13:29.34\00:13:30.90 this beautiful Book of 1 and 2 Peter. 00:13:30.93\00:13:33.94 Thank you for being with us again. 00:13:33.97\00:13:36.39
