Welcome once again to "Books of the Book." 00:00:22.37\00:00:24.91 We're very excited that you're able to join us 00:00:24.94\00:00:27.63 in this program to study the word of God. 00:00:27.66\00:00:29.72 I invite you to get your bibles, a piece of paper and pencil 00:00:29.75\00:00:33.03 to take notes as we look into the word of God for answers. 00:00:33.06\00:00:36.69 And with us is Dr. Tom Shepherd. Yep. 00:00:36.72\00:00:39.02 And, Dr. Shepherd, you come from Andrews University 00:00:39.05\00:00:41.70 which is in Michigan, is that right? 00:00:41.73\00:00:43.48 That's correct. 00:00:43.51\00:00:44.88 You teach New Testament interpretation? 00:00:44.91\00:00:48.65 If you had a favorite Bible, 00:00:48.68\00:00:50.86 obviously in the New Testament, what is that? 00:00:50.89\00:00:53.59 A Bible book in the New Testament? Bible book. 00:00:53.62\00:00:56.50 Well, you know, I guess I'd have to say 1 Peter right now. 00:00:56.53\00:00:59.21 It's...really...theology. 00:00:59.24\00:01:02.42 I guess you can see I'm kind of 00:01:02.45\00:01:03.82 passionate about it as we talk about it. 00:01:03.85\00:01:05.96 But it's just--I've just been overwhelmed with 00:01:05.99\00:01:08.56 its wonderful interconnection of theological ideas. 00:01:08.59\00:01:13.02 And each time I come back to it 00:01:13.05\00:01:15.73 to look at a new aspect, 00:01:15.76\00:01:19.05 I was asked to write a paper on 00:01:19.08\00:01:20.54 Biblical anthropology from 1 Peter. 00:01:20.57\00:01:23.64 And I followed that through 00:01:23.67\00:01:26.42 and saw things I hadn't seen before. 00:01:26.45\00:01:28.28 It's like you always see new things 00:01:28.31\00:01:31.07 as you open the word of God. 00:01:31.10\00:01:32.64 Yes, and again you're very passionate about this book, 00:01:32.67\00:01:34.62 about teaching it and-- Yeah. 00:01:34.65\00:01:36.81 And explaining it and we are, 00:01:36.84\00:01:38.21 in fact, studying the Book of 1 Peter. 00:01:38.24\00:01:40.01 And last time, we've been talking about 00:01:40.04\00:01:41.89 all these different metaphors that Peter uses 00:01:41.92\00:01:45.53 and so maybe you want to continue--Yes. 00:01:45.56\00:01:48.08 Now we're coming--this section we're gonna read today, 00:01:48.11\00:01:51.32 we're gonna look at today is 1 Peter 2:4-10. 00:01:51.35\00:01:54.92 1 Peter 2:4-10 is our passage. 00:01:54.95\00:01:57.42 And this is the ending of the first section of the book. 00:01:57.45\00:02:01.59 And the first section of the book 00:02:01.62\00:02:03.66 tends to focus its attention on who the Christian community is 00:02:03.69\00:02:09.27 and defines us, describes us, 00:02:09.30\00:02:12.83 uses all these different metaphors, 00:02:12.86\00:02:15.17 all these different concepts, all this great theology 00:02:15.20\00:02:17.97 piled up one on top of the other, 00:02:18.00\00:02:20.05 so as to shall we say protect the Christian, 00:02:20.08\00:02:24.62 a wall, to protect the Christian 00:02:24.65\00:02:27.32 against the lure of the pagan world around them 00:02:27.35\00:02:34.01 and we can say today, the pagan world around us 00:02:34.04\00:02:37.27 that tries to reach in and grab us. 00:02:37.30\00:02:40.13 So it has this wonderful, you know, pictures. 00:02:40.16\00:02:44.24 Now this is the last of the metaphors instance. 00:02:44.27\00:02:47.19 It's not a mixed metaphor now. 00:02:47.22\00:02:48.59 It's not a dual metaphor but it's one last metaphor 00:02:48.62\00:02:51.84 that he's gonna describe in explaining 00:02:51.87\00:02:54.37 who the people of God are. 00:02:54.40\00:02:55.95 And that's in 1 Peter 2:4-10, 00:02:55.98\00:02:57.84 so that's where we should read right now. 00:02:57.87\00:02:59.87 1 Peter Chapter 2 and verse? Verses 4 through 10. 00:02:59.90\00:03:04.80 "Coming to Him as to a living stone, 00:03:04.83\00:03:06.73 rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious. 00:03:06.76\00:03:11.14 You also, as living stones, 00:03:11.17\00:03:12.83 are being built up a spiritual house, 00:03:12.86\00:03:15.65 a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices 00:03:15.68\00:03:19.23 acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 00:03:19.26\00:03:21.93 Therefore it is also contained in the scripture, 00:03:21.96\00:03:25.00 "Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, 00:03:25.03\00:03:27.68 elect, precious, and he who believes on Him 00:03:27.71\00:03:31.46 will by no means be put to shame." 00:03:31.49\00:03:33.82 Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious, 00:03:33.85\00:03:37.01 but to those who are disobedient, 00:03:37.04\00:03:39.45 "The stone which the builders rejected 00:03:39.48\00:03:41.67 has become a chief cornerstone," 00:03:41.70\00:03:44.22 and "A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense." 00:03:44.25\00:03:49.86 They stumble, being disobedient to the word, 00:03:49.89\00:03:53.68 to which they also were appointed. 00:03:53.71\00:03:56.88 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, 00:03:56.91\00:03:59.73 a holy nation, His own special people, 00:03:59.76\00:04:03.05 that you may proclaim the praises of Him 00:04:03.08\00:04:05.41 who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light, 00:04:05.44\00:04:09.53 who once were not a people but now are the people of God, 00:04:09.56\00:04:14.93 who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy." 00:04:14.96\00:04:20.10 Well, that's quite a passage, isn't it? It sure is. 00:04:20.13\00:04:23.52 The way it describes this, 00:04:23.55\00:04:26.50 this passage shows the divide between people, 00:04:26.53\00:04:33.02 people who honor and who value Jesus Christ 00:04:33.05\00:04:41.02 and people who do not honor and do not value Jesus Christ. 00:04:41.05\00:04:48.51 I'm reminded of a story that happened some years ago 00:04:48.54\00:04:52.20 of a gem dealer in the Mid-West. 00:04:52.23\00:04:55.99 His name was Morgan Sonsthagen and he's located in Denver. 00:04:56.02\00:05:01.35 I've spoken to him by phone actually before. 00:05:01.38\00:05:04.37 And he was visiting 00:05:04.40\00:05:08.47 one of these gem dealer shows, you know, 00:05:08.50\00:05:15.25 where there were people showing there different things 00:05:15.28\00:05:17.75 that you could buy and everything, 00:05:17.78\00:05:19.56 different gems that you could, 00:05:19.59\00:05:20.96 you know, take an interest in and you hear of people buying-- 00:05:20.99\00:05:24.33 Trading too? Yeah. 00:05:24.36\00:05:25.73 Trading and people buying something and-- Call it a... 00:05:25.76\00:05:28.35 They find out- We call it a flea market, you know? 00:05:28.38\00:05:30.93 Flea market kind of thing. 00:05:30.96\00:05:32.33 And so Morgan Sonsthagen saw this stone that was being used 00:05:32.36\00:05:36.54 as a paperweight on somebody's desk 00:05:36.57\00:05:39.64 and it was this red, this reddish stone. 00:05:39.67\00:05:44.02 And he asked about it. 00:05:44.05\00:05:47.55 He says, "How much is that stone?" 00:05:47.58\00:05:49.32 "Four, going four." 00:05:49.35\00:05:50.72 And he says, that guy says, "No, it's just a paperweight. 00:05:50.75\00:05:53.42 I'm not selling this. It's just a paperweight." 00:05:53.45\00:05:55.73 He says, "No, I want to buy it. 00:05:55.76\00:05:57.13 How much will you sell it to me for?" 00:05:57.16\00:05:58.53 He finally bargained for a price of $50. 00:05:58.56\00:06:02.86 And he thought that he had a particular kind of stone 00:06:02.89\00:06:06.58 that he'd purchased for this $50. 00:06:06.61\00:06:09.49 Well, he turned out, he went back, 00:06:09.52\00:06:12.60 then they started looking into this stone, 00:06:12.63\00:06:14.34 figuring out what it was and it turned out to be 00:06:14.37\00:06:17.04 a rare reddish stone that's found in only like 00:06:17.07\00:06:20.03 one place in China or something. 00:06:20.06\00:06:22.27 And they took the stone. 00:06:22.30\00:06:24.58 They had it cut into different gems. 00:06:24.61\00:06:27.25 And it turned out the stone's value was like $3,000. 00:06:27.28\00:06:33.31 And he just paid $50 for it. 00:06:33.34\00:06:35.31 Somebody was using it as a paperweight, you see. 00:06:35.34\00:06:38.39 Well, that's kind of an illustration 00:06:38.42\00:06:40.32 of the way people may think about Jesus. 00:06:40.35\00:06:43.66 To some, Jesus is just a paperweight. 00:06:43.69\00:06:46.61 He's just, you know, He's there, the church is there, 00:06:46.64\00:06:49.30 and they could care less and they don't have-- 00:06:49.33\00:06:51.63 it doesn't make any important part of their life. 00:06:51.66\00:06:54.03 But to other people, He's precious, you know? 00:06:54.06\00:06:56.90 And He is a precious stone 00:06:56.93\00:06:58.73 that becomes the cornerstone of their life, okay. 00:06:58.76\00:07:03.08 So we look at the text and we see how Apostle Peter starts. 00:07:03.11\00:07:07.85 As you come to Him, 00:07:07.88\00:07:09.25 that's the Jesus Christ, a living stone. 00:07:09.28\00:07:12.79 You know, that's an oxymoron again, 00:07:12.82\00:07:14.93 a living stone, stones are dead 00:07:14.96\00:07:16.48 but here it's called a living stone. 00:07:16.51\00:07:18.53 Why is He called living? 00:07:18.56\00:07:19.98 Because He was raised from the dead. 00:07:20.01\00:07:22.11 He was raised from the dead. 00:07:22.14\00:07:23.71 A living stone, notice, rejected by men. 00:07:23.74\00:07:27.66 But in the sight of God chosen and precious. 00:07:27.69\00:07:31.01 Now we're gonna find a little bit later in this book 00:07:31.04\00:07:34.69 that this idea of being aware of God's value on things 00:07:34.72\00:07:41.47 is a very important part of Christian life. 00:07:41.50\00:07:44.33 It's a very important thing to keep you on the right track. 00:07:44.36\00:07:48.14 Valuing things in the same way God values things, okay. 00:07:48.17\00:07:52.77 He was rejected by men 00:07:52.80\00:07:55.45 but he was chosen and precious by God. 00:07:55.48\00:07:59.87 And says, you yourselves, that's the Christians, 00:07:59.90\00:08:02.36 you yourselves like living stones 00:08:02.39\00:08:04.92 are being built up a spiritual house 00:08:04.95\00:08:08.79 to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices 00:08:08.82\00:08:11.34 acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 00:08:11.37\00:08:13.98 Okay, so he's been playing 00:08:14.01\00:08:16.18 on this whole idea of a spiritual household, right? 00:08:16.21\00:08:20.83 And you're the children of God. You've been born-again. 00:08:20.86\00:08:23.95 You're the babies at His breast. You are receiving life from Him. 00:08:23.98\00:08:28.27 He is your father, you know, the household metaphors 00:08:28.30\00:08:32.17 just keep piling on top of one another. 00:08:32.20\00:08:34.75 And in case, maybe you missed it, 00:08:34.78\00:08:36.99 He piles another one here 00:08:37.02\00:08:39.20 and this time it's actual house that is being built. 00:08:39.23\00:08:42.29 You could say a temple 00:08:42.32\00:08:43.69 but it's the house of God that's being built. 00:08:43.72\00:08:46.20 And the cornerstone is Jesus. 00:08:46.23\00:08:50.30 Now here's the question. 00:08:50.33\00:08:53.32 In terms of a house or a building, a great structure, 00:08:53.35\00:08:58.29 what is it about the cornerstone that's so important? 00:08:58.32\00:09:03.27 You would think that it is the foundation that's important 00:09:03.30\00:09:05.75 but now it says, like, the cornerstone-- 00:09:05.78\00:09:07.58 Well, okay. 00:09:07.61\00:09:08.98 You would think of the foundational, 00:09:09.01\00:09:11.44 foundation stone but think of the foundation 00:09:11.47\00:09:13.80 if you want to dig down and think about that. 00:09:13.83\00:09:15.80 Okay, but what's important about that stone 00:09:15.83\00:09:17.63 that first one that you lay? 00:09:17.66\00:09:19.37 Um, maybe because it was the first one 00:09:19.40\00:09:21.93 that was laid on the foundation? 00:09:21.96\00:09:23.56 Yes, okay, the first one. 00:09:23.59\00:09:25.38 And it would have to be extremely strong, 00:09:25.41\00:09:28.06 wouldn't it? Mm-hmm. 00:09:28.09\00:09:29.46 Extremely strong, not only that 00:09:29.49\00:09:31.72 but when you lay the very first stone, 00:09:31.75\00:09:36.20 it sets the direction to the house. 00:09:36.23\00:09:40.37 That way, that way, and that way, okay. 00:09:40.40\00:09:45.90 So the cornerstone wherever you put the cornerstone, 00:09:45.93\00:09:49.27 gives you the total direction of the house. 00:09:49.30\00:09:51.61 The total geographic location of the house 00:09:51.64\00:09:54.97 is all set by that one stone 00:09:55.00\00:09:57.50 because it's right at the corner. 00:09:57.53\00:09:59.33 So it has all three dimensions in it, see. 00:09:59.36\00:10:01.51 So that becomes that which defines the house, 00:10:01.54\00:10:06.73 defines the house, so that's why the cornerstone 00:10:06.76\00:10:08.78 is so important, you see. 00:10:08.81\00:10:10.18 Jesus defines the house. 00:10:10.21\00:10:12.39 He defines Christian faith and everything is built on Him. 00:10:12.42\00:10:17.28 If it's not built on Him, it's not Christian. 00:10:17.31\00:10:20.06 So it becomes defined by its relationship to Him. 00:10:20.09\00:10:23.07 Now he quotes from the scripture 00:10:23.10\00:10:24.47 and we want to read that scripture. 00:10:24.50\00:10:25.97 It's from the Book of Isaiah and it's actually 00:10:26.00\00:10:28.28 two passages in Isaiah that relate to this. 00:10:28.31\00:10:30.57 So you will read one, I'll read the other. 00:10:30.60\00:10:32.35 The first is in Isaiah 8:11-15 00:10:32.38\00:10:36.08 and the other is in Isaiah 28:14-17, both in Isaiah. 00:10:36.11\00:10:40.69 Isaiah 8:11-15, that's where we'll start. 00:10:40.72\00:10:46.65 "For the Lord spoke thus to me with a strong hand, 00:10:46.68\00:10:49.32 and instructed me that I should not walk 00:10:49.35\00:10:51.64 in the way of this people, saying, 00:10:51.67\00:10:53.91 'Do not say, 'A conspiracy,' 00:10:53.94\00:10:56.03 Concerning all that this people call a conspiracy, 00:10:56.06\00:10:59.53 nor be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled. 00:10:59.56\00:11:02.75 The Lord of hosts, Him you shall hollow, 00:11:02.78\00:11:05.89 let Him be your fear, and let Him be your dread. 00:11:05.92\00:11:09.26 He will be as a sanctuary, but a stone of stumbling 00:11:09.29\00:11:13.46 and a rock of offense to both the house of Israel, 00:11:13.49\00:11:17.97 as a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 00:11:18.00\00:11:21.86 And many among them shall stumble 00:11:21.89\00:11:24.15 and they shall fall and be broken, be snared and taken." 00:11:24.18\00:11:28.50 All right. So here you have 00:11:28.53\00:11:31.63 a description of the people of Israel 00:11:31.66\00:11:36.38 going the wrong way, you see. 00:11:36.41\00:11:38.81 And he says to them, don't be afraid 00:11:38.84\00:11:40.57 of what they fear, nor be in dread 00:11:40.60\00:11:43.13 but you're supposed to honor the Lord of hosts. 00:11:43.16\00:11:45.46 You're supposed to fear Him. 00:11:45.49\00:11:47.07 He'll become a sanctuary and it says a stone of offense 00:11:47.10\00:11:51.62 and a rock of stumbling to both houses of Israel. 00:11:51.65\00:11:54.47 It's really a sad kind of a depiction here, 00:11:54.50\00:11:57.49 the very people of God going the wrong way, 00:11:57.52\00:12:00.38 stumbling over the stone instead of building upon it. 00:12:00.41\00:12:02.75 Now if we could turn to Chapter 28, 00:12:02.78\00:12:05.03 we get some similar ideas. 00:12:05.06\00:12:07.45 Isaiah 28:14-17. Isaiah 28:14-17. 00:12:07.48\00:12:12.78 It says this, "Therefore hear the word of the Lord, 00:12:12.81\00:12:14.93 you scoffers who rule this people in Jerusalem. 00:12:14.96\00:12:20.59 Because you have said, 00:12:20.62\00:12:21.99 'We have made a covenant with death, 00:12:22.02\00:12:23.68 and with Sheol we have an agreement, 00:12:23.71\00:12:25.79 when the overwhelming whip passes through 00:12:25.82\00:12:28.54 it will not come to us, 00:12:28.57\00:12:30.39 for we have made lies our refuge, 00:12:30.42\00:12:32.52 and in falsehood we have taken shelter. 00:12:32.55\00:12:35.59 Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion, 00:12:35.62\00:12:40.59 a stone, a tested stone, 00:12:40.62\00:12:43.15 a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation, 00:12:43.18\00:12:46.53 'Whoever believes will not be in haste.' 00:12:46.56\00:12:49.18 And I will make justice the line, 00:12:49.21\00:12:51.12 and righteousness the plumb line, 00:12:51.15\00:12:53.11 and hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, 00:12:53.14\00:12:56.55 and waters will overwhelm the shelter." 00:12:56.58\00:12:59.77 What an experience. 00:12:59.80\00:13:01.79 They were going the way of lies 00:13:01.82\00:13:03.32 and notice God says that He has laid a precious cornerstone 00:13:03.35\00:13:06.95 and he will make justice the line 00:13:06.98\00:13:09.25 and righteousness the plumb line. 00:13:09.28\00:13:10.75 Now the plumb line is what you hold up here 00:13:10.78\00:13:13.32 and it shows you that all of your structure 00:13:13.35\00:13:15.58 is built along the same lines as the cornerstone. 00:13:15.61\00:13:19.20 And so God's plumb line is truth 00:13:19.23\00:13:22.22 that is being laid down to take 00:13:22.25\00:13:24.57 and make sure that the measurements are following 00:13:24.60\00:13:26.83 the precious cornerstone that has been laid by God. 00:13:26.86\00:13:31.54 Well, that's very interesting, 00:13:31.57\00:13:32.94 this metaphor that Peter is using 00:13:32.97\00:13:35.03 and I think we should continue hearing 00:13:35.06\00:13:37.19 more of these metaphors that Peter has. 00:13:37.22\00:13:39.65 We're gonna take a short break, Dr. Shepherd, 00:13:39.68\00:13:41.88 and we'll be right back after these messages. 00:13:41.91\00:13:44.52
