Hello, friends, and welcome to "Books of the Book." 00:00:22.73\00:00:25.50 Do you believe that the word of God has power. 00:00:25.53\00:00:28.17 If you are not too sure of that answer 00:00:28.20\00:00:30.12 please join us as we take a look at this very interesting topic 00:00:30.15\00:00:33.94 here in the first book of Peter. 00:00:33.97\00:00:36.11 And joining me is Dr. Shepherd. 00:00:36.14\00:00:38.74 Dr. Shepherd, last time we were talking- 00:00:38.77\00:00:40.33 last program we were talking about the secret to holiness. 00:00:40.36\00:00:43.02 Yes. 00:00:43.05\00:00:44.42 What's this idea of holiness and how do we get it? 00:00:44.45\00:00:46.66 Yes. 00:00:46.69\00:00:48.06 We didn't quite finish here everything up there 00:00:48.09\00:00:50.00 and it actually might be best to show the graphic 00:00:50.03\00:00:53.76 that we have to go along with this. 00:00:53.79\00:00:55.64 It helps us to see this in relationship 00:00:55.67\00:00:57.80 to two different roles that God has in our world. 00:00:57.83\00:01:01.40 So we just put this graphic up. You'll see two truths about God. 00:01:01.43\00:01:05.94 The one on the left mention here is "Impartial Justice" 00:01:05.97\00:01:09.35 and the one on the right is "Unmerited Grace". 00:01:09.38\00:01:11.77 God has both of these characteristics. 00:01:11.80\00:01:13.42 You remember when we met last time 00:01:13.45\00:01:15.33 we talked about God as the judge. 00:01:15.36\00:01:18.13 He impartially judges. 00:01:18.16\00:01:19.76 Well, His unmerited grace speaks to us about His power to act, 00:01:19.79\00:01:24.45 to save us, the saving relationship we have with Him. 00:01:24.48\00:01:27.67 The individual value we have to Him 00:01:27.70\00:01:29.93 and it's a reminder of our connection with Him. 00:01:29.96\00:01:33.01 But when we think of Him as judge, 00:01:33.04\00:01:35.15 there are consequences to our actions. 00:01:35.18\00:01:37.96 And it talks about a broken relationship 00:01:37.99\00:01:40.30 if you get that negative judgment 00:01:40.33\00:01:42.12 and the responsibility that you have towards God 00:01:42.15\00:01:45.00 and what happens if you forget to take 00:01:45.03\00:01:48.38 this relationship with God seriously. 00:01:48.41\00:01:51.42 So the power to holiness really comes from the God. 00:01:51.45\00:01:55.43 What is our part? 00:01:55.46\00:01:56.83 Our part is to be sensitive to respond. 00:01:56.86\00:01:58.69 Remember He says to be completely awake, 00:01:58.72\00:02:00.92 to be willing to and accept the power that He sends our way. 00:02:00.95\00:02:06.21 If we do not, Peter warns us 00:02:06.24\00:02:08.89 that there are consequences to that. 00:02:08.92\00:02:10.64 That's why He, you could say, 00:02:10.67\00:02:13.37 He has the carrot and the stick, you know, 00:02:13.40\00:02:15.35 the stick is regard as the judge but the carrot is that-that 00:02:15.38\00:02:18.74 He has His grace there that gives you the new birth, 00:02:18.77\00:02:21.57 that gives you the power to be obedient to Him. 00:02:21.60\00:02:25.22 But we are not really done with this because 00:02:25.25\00:02:27.50 the following verses all the way- 00:02:27.53\00:02:29.82 or you could really say all the way through 00:02:29.85\00:02:31.58 chapter 2 verse 10 which were eventually going to arrive at, 00:02:31.61\00:02:34.83 but all the way through he sets up 00:02:34.86\00:02:37.61 the series of depictions of Christian life. 00:02:37.64\00:02:41.84 We say metaphors of Christian life. 00:02:41.87\00:02:44.65 And from chapter 1 verse 18 through chapter 2 verse 3, 00:02:44.68\00:02:50.20 He has 3 pairs a fall, 3 pairs of mixed metaphors. 00:02:50.23\00:02:57.08 So that's a total of 6 metaphors. 00:02:57.11\00:02:59.87 3 pairs of metaphors. 00:02:59.90\00:03:03.01 And the pairs don't match, they are mixed metaphors. 00:03:03.04\00:03:08.66 Now we might be kind of a little upset with him and say, 00:03:08.69\00:03:11.14 "Peter wanted to mixture metaphors using keep them, 00:03:11.17\00:03:14.05 you know, going down the same path, you know." 00:03:14.08\00:03:16.72 But he just did okay. 00:03:16.75\00:03:18.66 And we can draw some knowledge of what he is doing. 00:03:18.69\00:03:22.70 So let's read verses 18-21 again that comes 00:03:22.73\00:03:26.54 from the first-the last section but it really fits 00:03:26.57\00:03:29.80 with this section and understand this metaphors. 00:03:29.83\00:03:34.28 "Knowing that you were not redeemed 00:03:34.31\00:03:35.89 with corruptible things, like silver or gold 00:03:35.92\00:03:38.55 from your aimless conduct received by tradition 00:03:38.58\00:03:41.05 from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, 00:03:41.08\00:03:45.12 as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. 00:03:45.15\00:03:48.20 He indeed was foreordained before the foundation 00:03:48.23\00:03:50.95 of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you. 00:03:50.98\00:03:56.61 Who through Him believe in God who raised him 00:03:56.64\00:03:59.64 from the dead and gave Him glory, 00:03:59.67\00:04:02.04 so that your faith and hope are in God." 00:04:02.07\00:04:05.07 All right. 00:04:05.10\00:04:06.47 So again he is reminding the Christians of the importance 00:04:06.50\00:04:09.32 of obedience, the importance of being serious 00:04:09.35\00:04:12.37 about this relationship with God. 00:04:12.40\00:04:14.37 And he says, "you need to remember, 00:04:14.40\00:04:17.31 you need to know that you are ransomed 00:04:17.34\00:04:20.45 from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, 00:04:20.48\00:04:24.79 not with perishable things like silver or gold." 00:04:24.82\00:04:28.36 So the first metaphors he uses is the metaphor of redemption. 00:04:28.39\00:04:34.10 Now we have made this into-it's okay, 00:04:34.13\00:04:37.33 but we have made this in to a religious word. 00:04:37.36\00:04:40.43 But the word redemption in that time was a slave market word. 00:04:40.46\00:04:46.03 And to be redeemed was to be bought back. 00:04:46.06\00:04:50.36 And there are three ideas that are inherent 00:04:50.39\00:04:52.46 within the concept of slavery, of this idea of redemption. 00:04:52.49\00:04:58.41 There is the state of slavery, 00:04:58.44\00:05:02.28 there is the act of being set free 00:05:02.31\00:05:06.70 and there is the price that was paid. 00:05:06.73\00:05:09.00 Okay. 00:05:09.03\00:05:10.40 So the state of slavery is slavery- 00:05:10.43\00:05:13.83 let's say slavery to sin. 00:05:13.86\00:05:15.84 Peter calls it the futile ways of- 00:05:15.87\00:05:20.73 inherited from your forefathers. 00:05:20.76\00:05:23.07 Okay. 00:05:23.10\00:05:24.47 That was the slavery that held you. 00:05:24.50\00:05:27.30 Now this is again kind of oxymoron for Peter 00:05:27.33\00:05:30.48 to use here because the ways in a traditional culture, 00:05:30.51\00:05:34.13 the ways that you wouldn't heard 00:05:34.16\00:05:35.53 from your forefathers were very positive. 00:05:35.56\00:05:38.65 You-these are the traditions that your forefathers 00:05:38.68\00:05:41.45 have passed on to you and these things 00:05:41.48\00:05:44.80 that you would value highly. 00:05:44.83\00:05:46.79 And he calls them futile. 00:05:46.82\00:05:49.05 So he is teaching them- they have rejected 00:05:49.08\00:05:52.74 the ways of the past, they've rejected the pagan ways. 00:05:52.77\00:05:55.15 This is a big change of life 00:05:55.18\00:05:57.06 that has happened for these people. 00:05:57.09\00:05:58.84 And Peter says, "You will redeem from those. 00:05:58.87\00:06:02.01 You thought it was so good, you thought it was something 00:06:02.04\00:06:04.42 you should value, it was destroying you." 00:06:04.45\00:06:07.44 You see? 00:06:07.47\00:06:08.84 And so that's the first metaphors 00:06:08.87\00:06:10.49 the metaphors of redemption. 00:06:10.52\00:06:12.12 Well, then he mixes it because he goes in to the next verse, 00:06:12.15\00:06:17.06 he talks about the precious blood of Christ in verse 19. 00:06:17.09\00:06:21.65 "Like that of a lamb without blemish or spot." 00:06:21.68\00:06:26.41 Okay? 00:06:26.44\00:06:27.81 So here is a sacrificial metaphor. 00:06:27.84\00:06:32.07 He is talking about Christ as though he was a lamb. 00:06:32.10\00:06:36.79 And again this links us back into the Old Testament concepts. 00:06:36.82\00:06:44.62 The Old Testament sacrificial service, 00:06:44.65\00:06:46.89 where if somebody did something wrong 00:06:46.92\00:06:49.05 they had to bring a lamb or goat or ox or something 00:06:49.08\00:06:53.34 and they would sacrifice it, they would kill it. 00:06:53.37\00:06:56.34 And then the blood of that animal 00:06:56.37\00:06:58.25 would be sprinkled in the sanctuary. 00:06:58.28\00:07:00.28 Of course this was pointing forward 00:07:00.31\00:07:02.55 to the great sacrifice that Christ would give. 00:07:02.58\00:07:05.35 That's what Peter says, "He is like a lamb 00:07:05.38\00:07:08.10 without spot and without blemish." 00:07:08.13\00:07:10.32 He is that perfect lamb that protects you or saved you. 00:07:10.35\00:07:13.88 It's like the Passover, when the Passover lamb 00:07:13.91\00:07:16.70 was offered they would kill the lamb, 00:07:16.73\00:07:18.69 they'd take the blood, 00:07:18.72\00:07:20.09 and they put it on the door posts of the house. 00:07:20.12\00:07:23.09 And when the angel came that night 00:07:23.12\00:07:25.59 to destroy all the first born 00:07:25.62\00:07:27.37 the angel would see the blood on the door 00:07:27.40\00:07:30.16 and would Passover that house and not kill the first born. 00:07:30.19\00:07:33.93 So it was a saving experience but it cost something. 00:07:33.96\00:07:39.76 And so when the cost was the precious blood of Jesus. 00:07:39.79\00:07:42.60 And it's kind of funny, you know, he says, 00:07:42.63\00:07:46.50 "You were ransomed from your futile ways 00:07:46.53\00:07:49.87 not with perishable things such as silver and gold." 00:07:49.90\00:07:52.63 Now of all things you in our world, 00:07:52.66\00:07:57.52 there are two things that are considered imperishable. 00:07:57.55\00:08:03.03 And they are silver and particularly gold 00:08:03.06\00:08:06.86 because gold doesn't lose its luster, you know. 00:08:06.89\00:08:10.74 Some medals, they will give lusty or they will tarnish 00:08:10.77\00:08:14.01 or something, but not gold, it always shines. 00:08:14.04\00:08:17.15 Especially, nowadays that the economy 00:08:17.18\00:08:18.68 isn't so- not doing very good. 00:08:18.71\00:08:20.67 People are going after the imperishable. 00:08:20.70\00:08:24.16 That they say, you know it's something you can hang on to. 00:08:24.19\00:08:27.70 And Peter is kind of like saying, 00:08:27.73\00:08:29.27 "Is that the best you got? That's not gonna save you. 00:08:29.30\00:08:33.81 That doesn't help you." 00:08:33.84\00:08:35.46 You see there is nothing we can do 00:08:35.49\00:08:39.27 to save ourselves from the pit of sin. 00:08:39.30\00:08:41.92 I heard one time about a man, when-it's a poor, sad, 00:08:41.95\00:08:47.42 sad story, but when he died he had them put 00:08:47.45\00:08:51.43 his tithe of receipts in his pocket of his suit. 00:08:51.46\00:08:56.32 And think about that. 00:08:56.35\00:08:58.04 Put your tithe receipts in the pocket of your suit. 00:08:58.07\00:09:01.09 Are you gonna show these to the God? 00:09:01.12\00:09:03.68 You know what, when the time comes 00:09:03.71\00:09:05.19 you're gonna say, "But I gave 40 years of tithe." 00:09:05.22\00:09:08.72 I'm sorry, that cannot save you. Gold, silver it cannot do. 00:09:08.75\00:09:13.26 Only the precious blood of Jesus can do that, you see. 00:09:13.29\00:09:16.28 So that's the first metaphor that he brings to us 00:09:16.31\00:09:19.57 "The precious blood of Christ". 00:09:19.60\00:09:21.15 And in verse 20 he says, "He was foreknown before 00:09:21.18\00:09:23.64 the foundation of the world, but was made manifest 00:09:23.67\00:09:26.28 in the last times for the sake of you." 00:09:26.31\00:09:28.69 Notice it's very cosmic, it goes all the way back 00:09:28.72\00:09:31.12 to the beginning, before the beginning in other word 00:09:31.15\00:09:34.45 and it goes down to the last times. 00:09:34.48\00:09:36.35 So it's this cosmic great controversy picture. 00:09:36.38\00:09:39.91 All of time is encompassed by the sacrifice of Christ. 00:09:39.94\00:09:43.82 "And he is foreknown before them, 00:09:43.85\00:09:46.61 but manifested now who through Him 00:09:46.64\00:09:49.58 you are believers in God, who raised him from the dead." 00:09:49.61\00:09:52.21 Notice there the emphasis again on the resurrection, 00:09:52.24\00:09:55.97 the importance of the resurrection. 00:09:56.00\00:09:57.37 It's an interesting study to go through 00:09:57.40\00:09:59.47 and trying to see, you know, 00:09:59.50\00:10:02.50 where the New Testament talks about the resurrection. 00:10:02.53\00:10:05.84 You will find it in places you wouldn't expect sometimes. 00:10:05.87\00:10:09.44 And here again the resurrection of Jesus 00:10:09.47\00:10:13.17 is the affirmation of our belief in him. 00:10:13.20\00:10:16.48 God raised him from the dead and gave him glory. 00:10:16.51\00:10:19.43 Set your faith and hope in God. 00:10:19.46\00:10:22.67 So that's the first set of metaphors 00:10:22.70\00:10:25.33 The redemption metaphor combined 00:10:25.36\00:10:27.36 with the sacrificial metaphor of Jesus as the lamb. 00:10:27.39\00:10:32.43 Well, Dr. Shepherd, should we continue on the next verse? 00:10:32.46\00:10:35.65 Yeah. Why don't we read verses 23-25. 00:10:35.68\00:10:39.94 I think we skipped 22, didn't we? 00:10:39.97\00:10:41.66 22, I'm sorry. You are exactly right. 00:10:41.69\00:10:43.47 "Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth 00:10:43.50\00:10:46.53 through the spirit in sincere love of the brethren, 00:10:46.56\00:10:49.52 love one another fervently with a pure heart. 00:10:49.55\00:10:52.73 Having been born again, not of corruptible seed, 00:10:52.76\00:10:55.03 but of incorruptible, through the word of God, 00:10:55.06\00:10:57.16 which lives and abides forever." 00:10:57.19\00:10:59.92 Now here it says, since you have purified your souls, 00:10:59.95\00:11:05.30 what is this mean, purified your souls? 00:11:05.33\00:11:09.52 Well, we can refer back to verse 2 00:11:09.55\00:11:12.17 that we read earlier, chapter 1:2. 00:11:12.20\00:11:15.25 That says, "According to the foreknowledge 00:11:15.28\00:11:16.97 of God the father in the sanctification 00:11:17.00\00:11:19.18 of the spirit for obedience to Jesus Christ 00:11:19.21\00:11:22.24 and for the sprinkling with His blood." 00:11:22.27\00:11:24.17 So obedience and sprinkling, put together, okay? 00:11:24.20\00:11:27.01 So you purified your souls by your obedience to the truth. 00:11:27.04\00:11:31.77 There is this truth about salvation that comes in Christ. 00:11:31.80\00:11:35.55 And so there is a really cool word for this. 00:11:35.58\00:11:40.12 When you have two terms that refer 00:11:40.15\00:11:42.21 to the same thing is called hendiadys. 00:11:42.24\00:11:45.91 You like that word? Is that a Greek word? 00:11:45.94\00:11:47.84 Yeah. Okay. 00:11:47.87\00:11:49.24 Hendiadys. Hendiadys. 00:11:49.27\00:11:50.84 It actually means hen, is the word one, 00:11:50.87\00:11:53.77 dia is the word through and dy is the word two. 00:11:53.80\00:11:58.19 Dys is two. One through two? 00:11:58.22\00:12:00.28 I'm trying to make sense of it. 00:12:00.31\00:12:01.68 One through two, you're saying one thing using two terms. 00:12:01.71\00:12:03.62 Oh, okay. Okay. 00:12:03.65\00:12:05.02 So when you have this idea of obedience and sprinkling 00:12:05.05\00:12:11.16 that's a hendiadys to refer to making a covenant 00:12:11.19\00:12:13.71 with God, that you have become His children 00:12:13.74\00:12:16.54 through making this covenant, that He has becomes your father, 00:12:16.57\00:12:19.38 you becomes His child. Okay. 00:12:19.41\00:12:21.74 So you know sometime you can say we were just discussing 00:12:21.77\00:12:24.41 the hendiadys of covenant with God, you know. 00:12:24.44\00:12:28.10 Sounds pretty cool you know. 00:12:28.13\00:12:29.50 But you can go look it up in the dictionary. 00:12:29.53\00:12:32.12 It begins with hen like the word hen like the one 00:12:32.15\00:12:34.90 that went around on that on the farm yard, hendiadys. 00:12:34.93\00:12:38.47 Okay. So that is the idea of this purification 00:12:38.50\00:12:43.14 of your souls through your obedience, 00:12:43.17\00:12:45.56 to the truth you are making this covenant with God, 00:12:45.59\00:12:49.55 and he says that it produces a sincere brotherly love. 00:12:49.58\00:12:53.58 You have to love one another earnestly from a pure heart. 00:12:53.61\00:12:58.92 This is about the practical relationship 00:12:58.95\00:13:02.40 or the practical ideas that come out 00:13:02.43\00:13:07.47 of a saving relationship with God. 00:13:07.50\00:13:11.06 Some people think that- I don't know, 00:13:11.09\00:13:13.98 they get the idea that is saving relationship 00:13:14.01\00:13:17.12 doesn't have to have any practical implications. 00:13:17.15\00:13:21.84 That they can be saved by grace and be mean to their brother. 00:13:21.87\00:13:29.63 Peter says, "No, you can't do that." 00:13:29.66\00:13:32.90 If you are mean to people, 00:13:32.93\00:13:35.46 you are not in the right saving relationship with Jesus. 00:13:35.49\00:13:38.25 You are not following what he has taught you to do. 00:13:38.28\00:13:41.26 You are not living out what He has given you. 00:13:41.29\00:13:44.27 You see, by grace- He has given you that grace 00:13:44.30\00:13:46.62 so now, you must treat other people differently. 00:13:46.65\00:13:50.59 Grace is a new set of glasses 00:13:50.62\00:13:53.86 that we cannot look at in a different way. 00:13:53.89\00:13:56.94 We'll have to come back to this after a short break. 00:13:56.97\00:13:59.65
