And welcome back friends to "Books of the Book" 00:00:01.40\00:00:03.18 with me is Dr. Shepherd. 00:00:03.21\00:00:04.78 He is joining us in this study of first and second period. 00:00:04.81\00:00:08.45 Dr. Shepherd quick question. 00:00:08.48\00:00:10.32 What does obedience have to do with holiness? 00:00:10.35\00:00:13.63 All right. Well, we were looking here in verse 14. 00:00:13.66\00:00:16.96 It says, "As obedient children, do not be conformed 00:00:16.99\00:00:20.15 to the passions of your former ignorance." 00:00:20.18\00:00:21.89 We notice that he stresses that they are children, 00:00:21.92\00:00:24.72 they are--God is their father, they are his children. 00:00:24.75\00:00:27.32 He says, household of faith. 00:00:27.35\00:00:28.78 So he reminds them of that covenant 00:00:28.81\00:00:30.55 that they have made with God, 00:00:30.58\00:00:31.95 that linkage that they have to God. 00:00:31.98\00:00:33.89 And then he bolsters this whole concept of linkage 00:00:33.92\00:00:38.26 to God of the idea of-- the covenants of idea 00:00:38.29\00:00:43.62 with a reference to that which is holy. 00:00:43.65\00:00:45.96 So in verse 15, he says 00:00:45.99\00:00:48.08 "But as he who called you is holy, 00:00:48.11\00:00:50.86 you also be holy in all your conduct." 00:00:50.89\00:00:55.21 Since it is written verse 16, 00:00:55.24\00:00:57.47 "You shall be holy for I am holy." 00:00:57.50\00:00:59.97 He is quoting from Leviticus 19:2 00:01:00.00\00:01:04.39 part of the holiness code of the Old Testament. 00:01:04.42\00:01:07.52 And you look at this and you see that there is this concept 00:01:07.55\00:01:12.16 of emulation or following the pattern. 00:01:12.19\00:01:15.97 God is holy so that's what you have to do. 00:01:16.00\00:01:20.88 It's like carpenter building something 00:01:20.91\00:01:23.96 and showing his apprentice and the apprentice look at it 00:01:23.99\00:01:26.33 and measures it and takes in, 00:01:26.36\00:01:28.43 tries to make his just like the master carpenter did. 00:01:28.46\00:01:31.56 He tries to do things just the same way. 00:01:31.59\00:01:34.33 Or like a child walking on the beach 00:01:34.36\00:01:37.50 and his father footsteps are big and far apart 00:01:37.53\00:01:40.44 and he tries to reach his foot and reach his next foot, 00:01:40.47\00:01:43.67 so that he can walk in the footsteps of his father. 00:01:43.70\00:01:46.53 So because you are in covenant with God, 00:01:46.56\00:01:50.28 because He is your father, because you are His children 00:01:50.31\00:01:53.47 and you remember you agreed to obey. 00:01:53.50\00:01:55.88 All right, because you are His obedient child, 00:01:55.91\00:01:58.24 then you are to live a holy life just like He did, okay. 00:01:58.27\00:02:02.53 Of course, he is not really done. 00:02:02.56\00:02:04.92 That's not the only thing that he mentions, 00:02:04.95\00:02:07.23 his this idea of holiness, okay. 00:02:07.26\00:02:09.45 So why don't you read for us verse 17. 00:02:09.48\00:02:13.34 "And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges 00:02:13.37\00:02:17.02 according to each one's work, conduct yourselves 00:02:17.05\00:02:20.65 throughout the time of your stay here in fear, 00:02:20.68\00:02:24.40 knowing that you were not redeemed 00:02:24.43\00:02:26.31 with corruptible things like silver or gold 00:02:26.34\00:02:29.68 from your aimless conduct recede by tradition from your fathers, 00:02:29.71\00:02:33.96 but with the precious blood of Christ, 00:02:33.99\00:02:36.14 as of a lamb without blemish and without spot." 00:02:36.17\00:02:41.10 Okay, that was a little more than verse 16 00:02:41.13\00:02:43.35 but that's of 17, but that's okay. 00:02:43.38\00:02:45.64 That's all right we went forward just a little bit 00:02:45.67\00:02:47.48 and we'll fill all that in, okay. 00:02:47.51\00:02:49.31 So, he starts of-- so how has he argued already. 00:02:49.34\00:02:53.33 He has argued that because of-- he starts verse 13 00:02:53.36\00:02:58.62 with therefore that is in light of all the things 00:02:58.65\00:03:02.53 that we've talked about before. 00:03:02.56\00:03:04.75 Now, you must be totally ready for action, 00:03:04.78\00:03:09.57 your obedient children and so you are 00:03:09.60\00:03:11.51 not to conform you self to old way. 00:03:11.54\00:03:13.41 But you are supposed to be holy 00:03:13.44\00:03:15.54 because the God you serve is holy, all right. 00:03:15.57\00:03:19.23 Then in verse 17, he says "And if you call on him 00:03:19.26\00:03:23.28 as father" well, that's what Jesus taught us to do as a man. 00:03:23.31\00:03:29.67 He said when you pray say, our Father, 00:03:29.70\00:03:33.87 which art in heaven, all right. 00:03:33.90\00:03:36.24 Now often when we say the Lord's prayer 00:03:36.27\00:03:38.44 and I have to say, I don't think we say the Lord's prayer enough 00:03:38.47\00:03:41.78 in the Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:03:41.81\00:03:43.43 I think we need to say the Lord's prayer 00:03:43.46\00:03:44.92 more often than we do. 00:03:44.95\00:03:47.66 But when we say the Lords prayer, 00:03:47.69\00:03:51.42 it sort of just rolls off of our tongue little you know, 00:03:51.45\00:03:53.86 Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be the name. 00:03:53.89\00:03:56.15 You know, and we say it almost in rote fashion 00:03:56.18\00:04:01.05 where in actuality to call Him Father is very meaningful. 00:04:01.08\00:04:06.33 Which is exactly what Peter means here. 00:04:06.36\00:04:09.04 He says "What does it mean to call God your Father." 00:04:09.07\00:04:14.83 Well here's what that means. 00:04:14.86\00:04:16.67 "If you call on Him as Father who judges impartially 00:04:16.70\00:04:21.12 according to each one's deeds, conduct yourselves 00:04:21.15\00:04:23.85 with fear throughout the time of your exile." 00:04:23.88\00:04:28.05 Now, God is the judge of the world, you see, 00:04:28.08\00:04:32.56 and you cannot just leave the God out of things 00:04:32.59\00:04:37.37 and not take Him into account, all right. 00:04:37.40\00:04:39.76 So he says, "He judges the world impartially." 00:04:39.79\00:04:43.87 This term impartial is very interesting. 00:04:43.90\00:04:46.51 It's the concept of not-- it's an Old Testament idiom. 00:04:46.54\00:04:53.50 Not receiving the face. Not receiving the face? 00:04:53.53\00:04:57.44 The face, yeah. Which is--? 00:04:57.47\00:04:59.47 Is it one of those of other idioms? 00:04:59.50\00:05:01.20 Yeah, it's a strange kind of idiom we think that, 00:05:01.23\00:05:03.56 not receiving the face? Okay. 00:05:03.59\00:05:05.32 But it goes like this, if a judge was sitting 00:05:05.35\00:05:08.96 in the gate, you know, that's where 00:05:08.99\00:05:10.36 they have their judge, the judges there. 00:05:10.39\00:05:11.99 And somebody came up to him and said look there's going 00:05:12.02\00:05:16.05 to be a court case here in front of you in just a few hours. 00:05:16.08\00:05:20.00 And I want you to rule in my favor 00:05:20.03\00:05:22.71 and he gifts the judge some money. 00:05:22.74\00:05:25.13 He bribes him. Okay. 00:05:25.16\00:05:27.13 Then when they come before him turned off 00:05:27.16\00:05:30.26 it's this very guy who gave him money 00:05:30.29\00:05:32.14 and there is another man. 00:05:32.17\00:05:34.67 And the judge smiles at the guy who gave him the money. 00:05:34.70\00:05:38.61 Its just I am sure that your position is the right one, 00:05:38.64\00:05:43.34 he has received his face, he took a bribe, you see. 00:05:43.37\00:05:47.53 He wasn't impartial between the two, all right. 00:05:47.56\00:05:50.84 So Peter says, God is not like that. 00:05:50.87\00:05:54.19 You cannot bribe God. 00:05:54.22\00:05:56.52 He does not receive the face. 00:05:56.55\00:05:58.55 And if you think by calling him Father 00:05:58.58\00:06:02.32 that somehow you have curried favor with Him 00:06:02.35\00:06:05.21 and you don't have to really be obedient, 00:06:05.24\00:06:07.45 you can kind of play fast and loose with this whole thing. 00:06:07.48\00:06:12.82 Peter says, that's not going to work with God. 00:06:12.85\00:06:15.87 See, He judges every one impartially 00:06:15.90\00:06:19.69 according to his deeds. 00:06:19.72\00:06:22.18 Now this gets some people upset and they say, what? 00:06:22.21\00:06:26.00 I thought we were saved by faith. 00:06:26.03\00:06:28.39 Aren't we saved by faith? That's right. 00:06:28.42\00:06:30.14 Yes. Then why are we judged? 00:06:30.17\00:06:32.10 Why does Peter say that we are judge by our deeds? 00:06:32.13\00:06:35.21 Well, he is not the only one that says it. 00:06:35.24\00:06:37.62 Turn to 2 Corinthians 5:10. 2 Corinthians 5:10. 00:06:37.65\00:06:43.60 This is a very important idea. 2 Corinthians 5:10. 00:06:43.63\00:06:50.76 The Apostle Paul is talking about our heavenly home 00:06:50.79\00:06:55.88 and our bodies that we'll have in resurrection. 00:06:55.91\00:06:58.81 And then he talks about when that will all takes place. 00:06:58.84\00:07:00.74 Read it. Okay. 00:07:00.77\00:07:02.14 "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ 00:07:02.17\00:07:05.41 that each one may receive the things done in the body 00:07:05.44\00:07:08.76 according to what he has done whether good or bad." 00:07:08.79\00:07:12.67 Right, this is talking about judgment, isn't it? 00:07:12.70\00:07:14.27 It is. The judgment seat of Christ 00:07:14.30\00:07:16.23 and how we will be judged? 00:07:16.26\00:07:18.07 According to what we have done. What we have done. 00:07:18.10\00:07:22.08 What we have done or what we have not done. 00:07:22.11\00:07:24.33 Okay. So we are judge by deeds. 00:07:24.36\00:07:26.34 Somebody says, I don't understand. 00:07:26.37\00:07:28.75 How can you be saved by faith but judged by your deed? 00:07:28.78\00:07:33.90 Well this actually has more to do 00:07:33.93\00:07:35.54 with the biblical teaching about anthropology. 00:07:35.57\00:07:39.27 What is human being is like then it does with the in essence, 00:07:39.30\00:07:42.81 but then it does with the doctrine of salvation. 00:07:42.84\00:07:45.42 That is to say the Bible concept 00:07:45.45\00:07:48.93 of a human being is that we are a whole. 00:07:48.96\00:07:53.16 You--as we sometime say, you do not have a soul. 00:07:53.19\00:07:56.71 What you are a soul. All right. 00:07:56.74\00:07:59.47 The combination of the dust of the earth and the breath 00:07:59.50\00:08:02.72 of life from God creates a living soul. 00:08:02.75\00:08:05.63 Now we tend to think of this in terms 00:08:05.66\00:08:07.76 of what happens when you die, 00:08:07.79\00:08:09.24 that you rest in the grave till Jesus comes. 00:08:09.27\00:08:11.48 But it has many more implications than that. 00:08:11.51\00:08:14.14 And one of the important implications is that 00:08:14.17\00:08:18.22 your faith in your life, in your heart, 00:08:18.25\00:08:21.36 will and must show itself in action, 00:08:21.39\00:08:24.64 it must display itself in deeds. 00:08:24.67\00:08:28.49 If you have faith on the inside, it will show itself 00:08:28.52\00:08:32.21 on the outside by loving acts of kindness towards others. 00:08:32.24\00:08:35.98 When Jesus comes back, He is not gonna say to you, 00:08:36.01\00:08:38.23 did you believe in the Sabbath. 00:08:38.26\00:08:40.76 Did you believe in the righteousness by faith? 00:08:40.79\00:08:43.40 Did you believe in the trinity? 00:08:43.43\00:08:46.03 Did you--He's not going to ask you what you believed. 00:08:46.06\00:08:49.31 He's gonna ask you what you did. 00:08:49.34\00:08:52.25 He said, I was hungry and you gave me something to eat. 00:08:52.28\00:08:56.72 I was thirsty, you gave me something to drink. 00:08:56.75\00:09:00.25 I was in prison you came and visited me. 00:09:00.28\00:09:02.84 I was sick and you ministered to me. 00:09:02.87\00:09:05.59 Because our actions are an expression 00:09:05.62\00:09:08.71 of our faith or lack thereof. 00:09:08.74\00:09:12.00 So God judges us by our deeds. 00:09:12.03\00:09:14.88 Now, we better press on here to get some more 00:09:14.91\00:09:17.17 of the message here that listed so. 00:09:17.20\00:09:20.21 He says, "You are supposed to conduct yourself 00:09:20.24\00:09:22.08 with fear throughout the time of your exile." 00:09:22.11\00:09:26.44 Does he mean that we're supposed to be afraid of God? 00:09:26.47\00:09:31.14 Well, if you have questions about the fear of God, 00:09:31.17\00:09:34.59 let me give you a text that gives you 20-20 vision. 00:09:34.62\00:09:37.94 Okay. Exodus 20:20. Exodus 20:20. 00:09:37.97\00:09:43.34 This is 20-20 vision on the fear of God. 00:09:43.37\00:09:47.94 Okay, we'll never forget that one. 00:09:47.97\00:09:49.97 "And Moses said to the people, 'Do not fear, 00:09:50.00\00:09:52.89 for God has come to test you, and that is fear 00:09:52.92\00:09:56.85 may be before you, so that you may not sin." 00:09:56.88\00:10:01.08 Now that sounds like double talk, doesn't it? 00:10:01.11\00:10:03.74 It sounds like he is saying, don't de afraid, just be afraid. 00:10:03.77\00:10:08.98 And then he goes there, yeah, 00:10:09.01\00:10:10.39 and then he says "And that his fear may be before you." 00:10:10.42\00:10:14.50 Now there are two kinds of fear. Okay. 00:10:14.53\00:10:17.07 There is a fear that draws you away from God, 00:10:17.10\00:10:21.07 because He is so powerful, and He is so holy, okay. 00:10:21.10\00:10:25.85 And then there is a fear that draws you to God, 00:10:25.88\00:10:28.74 draws you close to God, draws you next to Him, 00:10:28.77\00:10:31.93 all right. This is the fear of the Lord. 00:10:31.96\00:10:35.14 Now, is there someone they are trembling in there, yes. 00:10:35.17\00:10:37.63 You know, He is God. 00:10:37.66\00:10:39.68 He is your Father, He is not some sugar daddy 00:10:39.71\00:10:42.84 or some thing you know. 00:10:42.87\00:10:45.47 And so, you must respect Him. 00:10:45.50\00:10:47.99 You must have deep reference for Him. 00:10:48.02\00:10:50.81 This is best illustrated perhaps by the story of Joseph. 00:10:50.84\00:10:56.10 In Genesis Chapter 39, Joseph was tempted by Potiphar's wife. 00:10:56.13\00:11:03.98 She said, come to bed with me. 00:11:04.01\00:11:06.23 Now for our Hollywood movie, the next scene would be 00:11:06.26\00:11:08.76 in the bedroom, but not in the case of Joseph. 00:11:08.79\00:11:12.31 And he gives her little speech. 00:11:12.34\00:11:14.82 He says to her, you know, I respect my master 00:11:14.85\00:11:18.41 he's given--he's put all things into my power and my control 00:11:18.44\00:11:22.33 and there is no one greater in this house 00:11:22.36\00:11:24.01 than I am except for him. 00:11:24.04\00:11:26.47 And he has not withheld anything from the except you 00:11:26.50\00:11:30.54 because you are his wife. 00:11:30.57\00:11:31.94 He reminds her who she is, and he then says, 00:11:31.97\00:11:37.66 how could I do this great sin-- Against God. 00:11:37.69\00:11:42.91 Against God. So he speaks of his master. 00:11:42.94\00:11:46.77 He speaks of his masters' wife. 00:11:46.80\00:11:48.33 He speaks of his relationship to his master and her. 00:11:48.36\00:11:53.84 But then he places it all within his relationship to God, 00:11:53.87\00:11:57.39 he lived in the presence of God. 00:11:57.42\00:12:01.64 That was the fear the Lord. 00:12:01.67\00:12:03.04 He said I, I cannot do this, because it would be, 00:12:03.07\00:12:08.18 you know, it would not be right, it would be so wrong. 00:12:08.21\00:12:10.92 So that's what he says here that you are supposed 00:12:10.95\00:12:14.61 to live your life in fear and notice 00:12:14.64\00:12:18.46 what he calls your life here in verse 17. 00:12:18.49\00:12:23.59 "The time of your exile." 00:12:23.62\00:12:27.12 It's the time of your pilgrimage. 00:12:27.15\00:12:28.67 He harks right to that words 00:12:28.70\00:12:30.70 that he had at the beginning of the book 00:12:30.73\00:12:32.14 when he called you a pilgrim, right. 00:12:32.17\00:12:34.89 That exile time that goes back. 00:12:34.92\00:12:37.55 You're to remember that you are not home yet, you are in exile. 00:12:37.58\00:12:41.96 You've to live in the fear of God. 00:12:41.99\00:12:44.07 So he is putting together, he is not finished yet. 00:12:44.10\00:12:46.45 We are not done with the entire passage 00:12:46.48\00:12:48.82 and we'll link this up with our next section 00:12:48.85\00:12:51.22 as we go into it, because verses 18 to 21 actually link 00:12:51.25\00:12:55.45 in to the following sections as well. 00:12:55.48\00:12:57.50 So we're going to talk about those verses. 00:12:57.53\00:12:59.74 But we will talk about them in our next time together. 00:12:59.77\00:13:02.46 And we will see how they all tie this up together 00:13:02.49\00:13:06.82 and making a very tight argument 00:13:06.85\00:13:09.07 about how we are supposed to live as Christians. 00:13:09.10\00:13:12.03 Well, Dr. Shepherd, thanks again for your insights 00:13:12.06\00:13:14.57 on this very interesting book First and Second Peter. 00:13:14.60\00:13:18.16 We often though study or read this book 00:13:18.19\00:13:20.63 as much as perhaps the gospels. 00:13:20.66\00:13:22.26 We need to do this much more. 00:13:22.29\00:13:23.80 But I invite everybody and I encourage 00:13:23.83\00:13:25.84 you to pickup the Bible, read the words that God has 00:13:25.87\00:13:29.27 for you and for me, God bless you. 00:13:29.30\00:13:31.47
